This chapter describes, first, the development of well-being between 1970 and 2010 from the perspective of the efforts of the societal midfield, the national government, and the business community. In the second place, the situation around 2010 is evaluated from the perspective of 1970 and a present-day perspective. From the perspective of 1970 material welfare and well-being have developed in a positive sense between 1970 and 2010. Problematic from this perspective is the increase in criminality and unemployment. In the Netherlands the crisis of nature and environment seems to be past its deepest point. The present-day perspective is described using the position of the Netherlands in European rankings for different themes and indicators. It confirms what has been said above in previous analyses: the Netherlands has a high quality of life. But this can be contested for the chances for future generations, especially in relation to human and natural capital. In addition, the Netherlands is more than ever intertwined with international supply chains for her resources and energy. In this way the Netherlands has displaced a part of its sustainability problems to foreign lands. On the other hand, international supply chains - as in the meat sector - have led to more landscape damage and environmental problems within the Netherlands.

Around 1970, welfare and economic growth became increasingly suspect. This chapter analyses and explains how this came about. It provides an inventory of the driving forces and institutional frameworks that shaped the development of well-being. In the period 1910-1970 the government energetically pursued the building of the welfare state. It was supported in this endeavour by a radically pillarised societal midfield. The economy was also under the tutelage of a dirigiste government. The six large Dutch multinationals generally supported the government's ambitions regarding the development of well-being. Characteristic for this period was the development of new patterns of consumption and a linear economy. Thanks to the mutual alignment among government, midfield and private enterprise it seemed possible to make well-being. The monitor is used to evaluate the state of well-being around 1970 from three perspectives. Viewed from the perspective of 1910, the monitor shows how the original agenda was realised. But when viewed through the lens of the new societal visions of 1970, an entirely different image emerges. The increase in welfare had been achieved at the cost of serious environmental pollution and the loss of nature in both the Netherlands and elsewhere. The mounting criticism of the dark side of well-being introduced a period in which ecology, natural resources, energy and climate change received emphatic attention (see Chaps. 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21). From the perspective of 2010 the situation had indeed become serious. In retrospect it appeared that around 1960 welfare, well-being and sustainability were most in balance.

Klimaatverandering, economische crisis, uitputting van grondstoffen, werkloosheid, verlies aan biodiversiteit... Dit zijn de keerzijden van het huidige, welvarende Nederland. Maar dergelijke problemen zijn zeker niet uniek voor onze moderne tijd. Ook in het verleden worstelden de Nederlanders met de vraagstukken van welvaart, welzijn en duurzaamheid. Denk aan de armoede, de bedreiging van de volksgezondheid, de woningnood, de strijd tegen het water. Bovendien waren er in elke generatie groepen die zich zorgen maakten over de verandering van het landschap en de verontreiniging van bodem, lucht en water. De kwetsbare welvaart van Nederland vertelt het fascinerende verhaal van de manieren waarop de samenleving in de afgelopen tweehonderd jaar de problemen rond welvaart en duurzaamheid wist op te lossen. En hoe men zich soms door de gekozen oplossingen geconfronteerd zag met weer nieuwe problemen. Nederland staat ook vandaag de dag voor de uitdaging om zijn hulpbronnen voor de komende generaties in stand te houden. We hebben grote ambities: een overschakeling op hernieuwbare energiebronnen en het hergebruik van alle materialen en producten. Kunnen we met het oog op een duurzame toekomst leren van de geschiedenis?

‘Het wonder van Brabant’ wordt de wederopstanding van de Brabantse economie wel genoemd. De provincie ging in de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de twintigste eeuw door een diep dal. De textiel-, sigaren-, schoenen- en leerindustrie verdwenen en imposante bedrijven als DAF en Philips kwamen in zwaar weer. Maar Noord-Brabant kwam erbovenop. De provincie is nu een belangrijke drager van de Nederlandse concurrentiepositie en speelt een leidende rol in verschillende sectoren. Harry Lintsen en Jan Korsten volgen deze ontwikkelingen vanaf de negentiende eeuw vanuit het perspectief van de Kamers van Koophandel in de regio’s Tilburg, Eindhoven, ’s-Hertogenbosch en Breda. Zij hebben een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de omslag. Zo nam de Eindhovense Kamer eind twintigste eeuw samen met de gemeente en de Technische Universiteit het initiatief tot de fameuze Brainport. Een bijzonder staaltje van krachtig netwerken, waardoor de Brabantse economie zo veerkrachtig werd.

Around 1900, small Dutch bread bakeries faced challenges in three areas: competition from mechanised bread factories, labour circumstances (wages and night working), and bread quality standards. From 1900 to 1930, bread bakers succeeded in mechanising and laid the foundations for the modernisation of their sector. This article investigates which knowledge sources were available for bakers during this process. It focuses on the role of two intermediaries and thereby illustrates how industrial associations can contribute to innovation. The Institute for Milling and Baking functioned as a knowledge centre for bakeries, consumers, suppliers and the state, whereas the Dutch Bakers Association organised the network in which knowledge could be circulated.

TNO, Nederland's grootste zelfstandige researchorganisatie, speelt van oudsher een belangrijke rol binnen de Nederlandse kennisinfrastructuur. In het kader van het 80 jarig jubileum van TNO in 2012 heeft de SHT de geschiedenis van de organisatie in kaart gebracht. Het bijna 300-pagina's tellende boek is ook een maatschappijgeschiedenis. De onderzoeksactiviteiten van TNO weerspiegelen immers de vraagstukken die de afgelopen 80 jaar leefden in Nederland. In de ontwikkeling van de organisatie is de dynamiek van de samenleving zichtbaar. Tegelijkertijd beïnvloedde TNO op haar beurt de geschiedenis van Nederland. In relatie tot TNO komen grote thema's zoals de industrialisatie en modernisering van Nederland, het welzijn van de Nederlander en de nationale veiligheid uitgebreid aan bod.

De Canon van Eindhoven is samengesteld in opdracht van Stichting De Negende van Eindhoven met als doel de historische wortels van het moderne Eindhoven zichtbaar te maken. Dit gebeurt aan de hand van 23 iconen, die geselecteerd zijn na raadpleging van de Eindhovense bevolking en discussies in diverse werkgroepen. De geschiedenis van Eindhoven ligt niet voor het oprapen. Door twee massale bombardementen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog veranderde de binnenstad in een puinhoop. Veel van wat er daarna nog over was, is tijdens de wederopbouw op de schop gegaan. Toch zijn er nog genoeg aanknopingspunten te vinden zoals gebouwen, standbeelden, straatnamen en landschappelijke elementen die vertellen over het wonen, het werken, het religieuze leven en het dagelijkse leven van vroegere generaties Eindhovenaren. De Canon van Eindhoven maakt de geschiedenis zichtbaar door deze blikvangers en de periode waaruit ze stammen te belichten. Denk hierbij aan het Eindhovens Kanaal, de Catharinakerk, de Bijenkorf en het Evoluon. Ook de huidige tijd, met de nadruk op techniek en design, komt uitgebreid aan bod.

This article is a formative evaluation of a course in which a blended learning environment was created and a good balance in dimensions of blended learning was sought. Blended learning is defined as the total mix of pedagogical methods, using a combination of different learning strategies, both with and without the use of technology. The evaluation is based on a model of blended learning that has four dimensions: structured/unstructured, individual/group, face-to-face/at-a-distance, and self/teacher directed. These dimensions are used for the evaluation of a module entitled Society and Technology that is taught at Delft University of Technology. We describe how the module evolved in terms of these four dimensions of blended learning. We then use this case as the basis for a discussion about an effective balance in blended learning and further research in this field.
