Abstract Objective This study aimed to investigate a range of insomnia-related factors, including difficulty with sleep induction, nocturnal awakenings, early awakenings, total sleep time, overall sleep quality, well-being, functioning, and daytime drowsiness, to determine which variables were significantly associated with subsequent adolescent suicide attempts. Method A total of 782 students aged 11–16 years old from one middle school in Changsha, China completed the survey at baseline and 6 months follow-up with a prospective cohort design. The binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between insomnia variables and suicide attempts during the 6 months follow-up. Results The new incidence rate of suicide attempts was 4.60% (36/782) at 6-month follow-up. Insomnia was a significant predictor of incident suicide attempts (OR = 6.00; 95%CI, 2.47–14.60). After adjusting for age, gender, nationality, stress, anxiety and depression, insomnia was found to predict suicide attempts only among female (OR = 4.28; 95%CI, 1.41–12.98) and only nocturnal sleep disruption was significantly associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts (OR = 2.74; 95%CI, 1.32–5.71). Conclusions Nocturnal sleep disruption are independently associated with increased risk of suicide attempts. Intervention for nocturnal sleep disruption may be important for early identification as well as prevention of adolescent suicide, especially among adolescent girls.

BackgroundSuicide is a critical public health issue in adolescents worldwide. Internet addiction may play a role in the increased rate of suicide attempts in this population. However, few studies have explored the relationship between pathological internet use and suicide attempts among adolescents. ObjectiveThis study aimed to conduct a prospective cohort study to examine whether higher severity of pathological internet use was associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts among Chinese adolescents. MethodsA total of 782 adolescents were recruited from a middle school from November 2020 to December 2020 and followed up for 6 months. An online self-reported questionnaire was used to collect the participants’ demographic data and assess their mental health. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale–21 items (DASS-21) was used to evaluate depression, anxiety, and stress. The Chen Internet Addiction Scale–Revised (CIAS-R) was used to assess the symptoms and severity of pathological internet use. χ2 test and ANOVA were used for intergroup comparison, and logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between the severity of pathological internet use and suicide attempts. We also used a restricted cubic splines model to investigate the pattern of the association. ResultsThe participants had an average age of 12.59 (SD 0.64) years, with the majority being of Han ethnicity (743/782, 95.01%) and more than half being male (426/782, 54.48%). Most participants had no previous history of depression (541/782, 69.18%), anxiety (415/782, 53.07%), or stress (618/782, 79.03%). The rate of newly reported suicide attempts was 4.6% (36/782). A significant positive association was observed between internet addiction and suicide attempts (odds ratio 3.88, 95% CI 1.70-8.82), which remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, anxiety, depression, and stress (odds ratio 2.65, 95% CI 1.07-6.55). In addition, this association exhibited a linear pattern in the restricted cubic spline regression model. ConclusionsThis study suggested that internet addiction, rather than internet overuse, was associated with a higher likelihood of suicide attempts, which highlighted the importance of addressing internet addiction symptoms among Chinese adolescents for suicide prevention.

Abstract Background Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a vital public concern around the world, and it often starts in adolescence. Emotional neglect (EN) has been considered a distal risk factor for NSSI, but the effects of social anxiety symptoms (SA) and insomnia on this relationship have remained unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential pathways from EN to NSSI, examining the role of SA and insomnia in this association. Methods One thousand three hundred thirty seven Chinese middle school students (Mage = 13.040, SD = 0.981, 50.2% males) in China were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Emotional Neglect sub-scale of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescent (SAS-A), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and non-suicidal self-injury assessment. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the possible mediation model among these variables. Results 231(17.3%) students reported NSSI history during last year and 322 (24.1%) participants reported experiences of EN. Students who experienced EN have higher rates of NSSI compared to students without EN history (29.2% vs 13.5%). EN, SA, insomnia and NSSI were positively related to each other. Furthermore, both SA and insomnia played a mediating role in the relationship between EN and NSSI, the series mediating effect of SA and insomnia on this association was also significant after controlling for demographics. Indirect effects accounted for 58.26% of the total effects (EN → NSSI). Conclusions Our study revealed that EN was associated with NSSI, SA and insomnia play indirect roles in the association between EN and NSSI. The findings of our research may have implications for clinicians, families, and schools in their efforts to lower the risk of NSSI in adolescents.

IntroductionInternet addiction (IA) is common among adolescents and may have severe consequences. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with IA among middle school students of Hunan Province, China. Relevance between IA and childhood trauma was also explored.MethodsOne thousand six hundred ten students were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Data collected included demographics; internet addiction (revised-Chen internet addiction scale); childhood trauma (CTQ-SF); depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms (DASS-21); suicidal behaviors, as well as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Cramer’s V analysis, univariable logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression were used for associations and identifying independent relevance of IA, respectively.ResultsThe prevalence of IA was 12.8%. Cramer’s V analysis showed that IA was associated with emotional abuse, emotional and physical neglect, NSSI, suicidal behaviors, stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms, physical disorder history. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Thinopyrum obtusiflorum was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. The complete circular mitogenome of Th. obtusiflorum is 390,725 bp in length and the overall A + T content of mitogenome is 55.61%. It harbors 33 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 21 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), six ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and 20 simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Th. obtusiflorum is a sister to the clade including Aegilops speltoides, Triticum aestivum, and Triticum aestivum cultivar Chinese Yumai in the Triticeae.
