The present study investigated the potential of social cooperative activities and social work practices in the Italian agriculture sector in promoting sustainable integration forms for refugees and asylum seekers. The study adopted a qualitative approach using case study as the main research method. As the results show, the complexity and diversity of needs of refugees and asylum seekers make collaboration between formal and informal actors increasingly necessary for generating a common knowledge and support networks. The article argues that integrated approaches to refugees’ socio‐economic integration are needed to free them from the need for assistance and thereby help them regain their autonomy. The case study presented gives insight into the potential of small‐step experiences towards sustainable development and, linked to this, the integration of refugees and asylum seekers based on self‐organisation and cooperation, considering the well‐being of all citizens in the broader context.

Taking the example of smartphones, the article discusses the impact of digital technologies on refugee trajectories considering the ambivalent potential of technologies to generate simultaneously new opportunities for refugees’ agency and new structural constraints regarding their mobility and actions due to control capacities. It therefore aims to offer a deeper discussion of the empowerment-control nexus and promote a better understanding of the various intersections that are developing between digitalization and migration/mobility patterns. The article is based on a qualitative research approach. Linking the individual level (the need of refugees to use smartphones for communication, information and orientation) to the political level is an emerging international market of surveillance and security technologies that has developed in recent years. Die Anerkennung der mitgebrachten Kompetenzen ist ein erster und wichtiger Schritt für die persönliche Weiterentwicklung und gesellschaftliche Beteiligung von MigrantInnen. Der Erwachsenenarbeit, so die Ausgangsposition der Autorin, kommt hier eine ganz wesentliche Verantwortung zu. Denn gerade das Konzept des Lebenslangen Lernens beinhaltet gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und Gleichwertigkeit, die Anerkennung voraussetzen. Nur: Wie steht es bislang um die Anerkennung von transnationalen informellen, formellen und non-formalen Kompetenzen im Migrationskonzept? Wie um das Recht auf Lebenslanges Lernen? Wie können Kompetenzen, Fähigkeiten, Lernerfahrungen losgelöst von nationalstaatlichen Grenzen gedacht werden? Der vorliegende Beitrag plädiert in einer profunden theoretischen Einbettung an die Erwachsenenbildung und Weiterbildung, sich auf diese Migrationsrealität zu beziehen und sich ihr gegenüber zu öffnen. Zeitgemäße Konzepte, Praxen und Organisationsformen der Erwachsenenbildung müssen Migration als einen transnationalen Prozess sehen und somit als eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Herausforderung. Migration muss demzufolge als Normalität in den Organisationsalltag der Erwachsenenbildungseinrichtungen integriert werden. (DIPF/Orig.), The recognition of competences that migrants have brought with them is a first and important step for their personal development and social participation. The initial position of the author is that very great responsibility must be attached to adult work since the concept of lifelong learning itself includes social participation and equality that presupposes recognition. However: how have transnational informal, formal and nonformal competences been recognized so far in the context of migration? How about the right to lifelong learning? How can competences, abilities and learning experiences be imagined free from the borders of nation-states? This article provides profound theoretical input and advocates for adult education and continuing education to respond to this reality of migration and open up to it. Up-to-date concepts, practices and forms of organizing adult education must see migration as a transnational process and thus as a challenge for society as a whole. Consequently, migration must be integrated into the daily life of the organization and become the norm for adult education institutions. (DIPF/Orig.)

The following research study is based on a micro-sociological approach to the phenomenon of immigration ( Bos, 1998 ). It also focuses on the global view of international migration and emphasizes the fact that immigration can never be separated from emigration but they are two different processes of the same phenomenon. ( Sayad, 2004 ). The primary purpose of the study is to explain inter-cultural coexistence not only from the perspective of immigrants but also from the viewpoint of the indigenous population of Fortezza, a small village in South Tirol, northern Italy. As the Latin preposition “inter” expresses, the study is trying to detect what is going on “between” the groups, where conflicting views exist despite the overlapping of the two worlds.

Seit einigen Jahren ist das Interesse am Thema soziale und solidarische Ökonomie im Zuge einer sich beschleunigenden Debatte über die Bedeutung der sozial-ökologischen Transformation und Nachhaltigkeit im deutschsprachigen Diskurs der Sozialen Arbeit deutlich gestiegen. Die Ursprünge reichen tatsächlich bis in die 1970er Jahre zurück, als unter den Stichworten Selbsthilfebewegung oder alternative Sozialarbeit erste Versuche einer Verbindung sozialer und ökologischer Zielsetzungen unternommen wurde. Der Beitrag verbindet eine historische Kurzanalyse mit einer Darstellung der beruflich-persönlichen Kooperationen und Begegnungen zwischen Susanne Elsen und den Autor*innen. In der Kurzanalyse stehen die begrifflichen und konzeptionellen Entwicklungen der letzten 30 Jahre in der Sozialarbeitsforschung und angrenzender Disziplinen im Vordergrund. Die Kooperationen und Begegnungen werden schlaglichtartig anhand von Forschungsprojekten, Praxisansätzen und Veröffentlichungen nachgezeichnet. Dabei wird besonders auf transdisziplinäre, deutsch-finnische Kooperationen und die europäische Ebene Bezug genommen. peerReviewed

The conference aimed at the reflexive assessment of the challenges for social work education, practice, and research highlighting the importance of both context and cultural sensitivity as well as the outreach through dialogue, exchange, and learning in a comparative and European perspective. The contributions intend to foster such a dialogue as well as the development of a common and critical understanding of social work as a profession and discipline which engages with its historical and political contexts and keeps alive the debate about its scientific foundations, values, professional standards and criteria of appropriateness and accountability in different practice fields and in changing welfare arrangements.
