Abstract Background Breast and cervical cancer are the most common cancers in women, and are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Cancer screening can facilitate early diagnosis, reduce mortality, and ease the burden of cancer. Social support and self-efficacy are strongly associated with cancer screening behavior. The present study aimed to explore the mediating effect of self-efficacy on social support and cancer screening behavior. Methods In this cross-sectional survey study conducted from June to October 2023, 312 women aged 35–65 years were recruited from the East Coast area of China. A general information questionnaire, cancer screening behavior questionnaire, social support scale and self-efficacy scale were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the general characteristics of participants; one-way analysis of variance was used to test for differences in the measured variables; and Pearson’s correlation analyses were used to describe the relationship among social support, self-efficacy, and cancer screening behavior. A mediation model was constructed and analyzed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results The mean (standard deviation) screening behavior score for breast cancer and cervical cancer was 3.98 (2.79), representing an intermediate level. Objectives: Through the reflection of young breast cancer women on their selves and identities, we explored expectations of the wife role that they need to fulfill to return to their families, aimed to provide a reference basis for medical professionals to develop interventions related to cancer family rehabilitation. Methods: Descriptive phenomenological methods and purposive sampling were used. Young breast cancer patients and their spouses were selected for semi-structured face-to-face interviews in the study from March to April 2023 at the department of breast surgery and oncology center of a Class A tertiary hospital in Xuzhou City, China. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological approach. Results: Twenty patients and six spouses were interviewed. The mean patient age was (35.95 ± 3.36) years, and the mean spouse was (37.67 ± 5.28) years. Young breast cancer patients were concerned about three main wife expectations during their treatment and rehabilitation: preserving self-love and self-esteem (paying attention to physical health, embracing the disease, and regaining confidence in female characters); adjustment of conjugal relationships (harmonious and effective couple communication, providing support for marriage and love, and creating a beautiful married life together); assisting in family recovery (relieving stress on spouses from caregiving and finances, and management of daily household chores). Conclusions: The wife role expectations of young breast cancer women and their spouses encompass three core aspects: self, couple, and family. Self-esteem and self-love are the most fundamental expectations of the wife role, while adjusting the couple’s relationship and assistance in family rehabilitation represent higher expectations. This study can help healthcare professionals and cancer families gain a more comprehensive understanding of the wife role expectations for young cancer women, thereby enabling the development of couple-centered interventions to promote patient recovery and enhance the resilience of marriages and families.

Abstract Aims/Introduction This study aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of circular ribonucleic acid nucleoporin 98 (circNUP98) in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Materials and Methods Human glomerular mesangial cells (HMCs) were stimulated with high glucose (HG) to imitate the growth environment of cells under the DN condition. Levels of genes and proteins were tested by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Cell proliferation, apoptosis and inflammatory response were analyzed by using cell counting kit‐8, flow cytometry and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay analysis, respectively. Oxidative stress and fibrosis were evaluated by detecting the activity of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, fibronectin and collagen IV. The binding interaction between microribonucleic acid (miR)‐151‐3p and high mobility group AT‐hook 2 (HMGA2) or circNUP98 was confirmed using dual‐luciferase reporter, pull‐down and ribonucleic acid immunoprecipitation assays. Exosomes were isolated by ultracentrifugation, and qualified by transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis and western blot. Results CircNUP98 expression was higher in the serum of DN patients and HG‐stimulated HMCs. Functionally, circNUP98 knockdown alleviated HG‐induced proliferation, fibrosis, inflammatory response and oxidative stress in HMCs. Mechanistically, circNUP98 directly sponged miR‐151‐3p, which targeted HMGA2. Rescue experiments showed that miR‐151‐3p reversed the inhibitory effects of circNUP98 knockdown on HG‐induced HMC dysfunction. Furthermore, miR‐151‐3p re‐expression also led to an inhibition of the aforementioned biological behaviors, which was attenuated by HMGA2 upregulation. Besides that, CircNUP98 was found to be packaged into exosomes of DN, and exosomal circNUP98 possessed diagnostic value for DN patients. Conclusion CircNUP98 knockdown alleviates HG‐induced proliferation, fibrosis inflammation and oxidative stress in HMCs by regulating the miR‐151‐3p–HMGA2 axis, which might provide a potential approach for DN therapeutics.

Nitrogen fertilizer increases agricultural yields but increases economic costs and causes a series of environmental problems. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have the potential to be used as biological fertilizer. However, the influence of nitrogen form on plant growth responsiveness to AMF inoculation is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of Funneliformis mosseae on growth, root morphology and photosynthetic characteristics of Camellia oleifera under different nitrogen forms during three harvest periods and clarified the most suitable nitrogen form for C. oleifera–AMF symbiosis. The results showed that urea, ammonium and nitrate nitrogen promoted plant growth and photosynthetic capacity, among which urea treatment had the highest value in all three harvests. No significant difference in plant growth parameters was observed between ammonium and nitrate nitrogen treatments in the first two harvests, while the plant height was significantly lower under ammonium nitrogen treatment than nitrate nitrogen treatment in the third harvest. Inoculation with F. mosseae in the presence of indigenous AMF could promote AMF colonization and plant growth at all three harvest times. Inoculation with F. mosseae significantly increased gas exchange parameters, the maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII). Inoculation with AMF increased the photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) better under urea treatment and improved the non-photochemical quenching coefficient (qN) better under ammonium nitrogen treatment. Principal component analysis showed that urea is the most beneficial nitrogen fertilizer for C. oleifera–AMF symbiosis. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the combination use of AMF and nitrogen fertilizer in agroforestry.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are involved in phosphorus (P) mobilization and turnover; however, the impact of their interaction on plant P absorption and organic P mineralization in the hyphosphere (rootless soil) are unknown. This study examined the interactive effects of two native microorganisms, namely Claroideogolmus etuicatum and Bacillus aryabhattai, and the effects of co-inoculation of both microorganisms on organic P mineralization and the subsequent transfer to Camellia oleifera, using a three-compartment microcosm with a nylon mesh barrier. The results demonstrated that the co-inoculation treatment (AMF + PSB) significantly increased the plant P content and biomass accumulation in C. oleifera compared to those of the non-inoculated control. Furthermore, co-inoculation boosted soil phosphatase and phytase activities as well as the liable P content. Compared to the non-inoculated control, inoculation of AMF decreased the NaOH-Po content. A correlation analysis showed that AMF colonization and hyphal density was significantly positively correlated with H2O-P and NaHCO3-Pi and negatively correlated with NaOH-Po. It was shown that co-inoculation could increase phosphatase activity, phytase activity, and promote the liable P content, thus increasing the phosphorus content and biomass accumulation of C. oleifera. In conclusion, AMF and PSB interactively enhanced the mineralization of soil organic P, and therefore positively affected P uptake and plant growth.

Understanding the effects of genotype, environment and their interactions on rice quality is of great importance for rice breeding and cultivation. In this study, six rice varieties with two indica, two japonica and two indica–japonica types of rice were selected and planted at ten locations in Zhejiang Province to investigate the genotype (G) × environment (E) on physicochemical and sensory properties and the differences of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among the three types of rice. Analysis of variances showed that apparent amylose content (AC), total protein content (PC), alkali spreading value (ASV), RVA profiles, and appearance (ACR), palatability (PCR), and sensory evaluation value (SEV) of cooked rice and texture of cooled cooked rice (TCCR) were mainly affected by genotypic variation, whereas the smell of cooked rice (SCR) was mainly affected by environment (p < 0.05). The G × E effect was significant for most parameters. The weather in the middle and late periods of filling had important effects on the formation of rice quality, especially on setback (SB) and pasting temperature (PT) (p < 0.01). They were negatively correlated with the texture of cooked rice (TCR) and SEV (p < 0.05). Peak viscosity (PV) and breakdown (BD) were positively related to the sensory evaluation parameters (p < 0.01) and could be used to predict cooked rice quality. A total of 59 VOCs were detected, and indica, japonica and indica–japonica had 9, 6 and 19 characteristic compounds, respectively. The principal component analysis showed that the physicochemical and sensory properties and VOCs of indica–japonica rice were more stable than those of indica and japonica rice at ten locations in Zhejiang Province. It is helpful for rice breeders to understand how the environment affects the physicochemical, sensory properties and VOCs of the three rice types, and it is also important for food enterprises to provide rice products with stable quality.

Improving the economic benefits of Camellia oleifera is a major problem for C. oleifera growers, and girdling and foliar fertilizer have significant effects on improving the economic benefits of plants. This study explains the effects of girdling, girdling + foliar fertilizer on nutrient distribution, and the economic benefits of C. oleifera at different times. It also explains the N, P, and K contents of roots, leaves, fruits, and flower buds (sampled in March, May, August, and October 2021) and their economic benefits. The results showed girdling promoted the accumulation of N and K in leaves in March 2021 (before spring shoot emergence) but inhibited the accumulation of P, which led to the accumulation of P in roots and that of N in fruits in August 2021 (fruit expansion period). Foliar fertilizer application after girdling replenished the P content of leaves in March 2021, and P continued to accumulate in large quantities at the subsequent sampling time points. The N and P contents of the root system decreased in March. In October (fruit ripening stage), girdled shrubs showed higher contents of N and K in fruits and flower buds, and consequently lower relative contents of N and K in roots and leaves but higher content of P in leaves. Foliar fertilizer application slowed down the effects of girdling on nutrient accumulation in fruits and flower buds. Spraying foliar fertilizer decreased the N:P ratio in the flower buds and fruits of girdled plants. Thus, foliar fertilizer spray weakened the effects of girdling on the nutrient content and economic benefits of C. oleifera. In conclusion, girdling changed the nutrient accumulation pattern in various organs of C. oleifera at different stages, increased leaf N:K ratio before shoot emergence, reduced root K content at the fruit expansion stage and the N:K ratio of mature fruit, and promoted economic benefits.

Thinning and understory clearance are among the two most popular forest management practices carried out to improve stand productivity in subtropical plantations. Unfortunately, studies have not fully explored the single and combination effect of thinning and understory clearance on soil microbial properties. By conducting a field manipulation experiment in a subtropical moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantation in Southern China, we assessed the effects of thinning, understory clearance, and their combination on soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) three years after treatments were first applied. We also examined the changes in soil properties after thinning and/or understory clearance. Thinning decreased soil fungal and bacterial PLFAs, and consequently soil total microbial PLFAs due to the increased soil NH4+-N, and NO3−N concentrations. Understory clearance decreased soil pH and soil water content resulting in increased soil fungal PLFAs and the ratio of soil fungal to bacterial (F:B). In addition, thinning and understory clearance caused apparent interactive effects on soil total microbial PLFAs and bacterial PLFAs, and the negative influence of thinning on soil total microbial and bacterial PLFAs were partly compensated by understory clearance. These results suggest the contrasting and interactive effect of thinning and understory clearance should be considered to assess the changes of soil microbial community and ecological processes in subtropical moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantations in southern China.

Background/Aims: The association between ACYP2(Acylphosphatase 2) polymorphisms and immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) risk in the Chinese Han population remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between ACYP2 polymorphisms and IgAN risk by performing a case-control study. Methods: Eleven ACYP2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 416 IgAN patients and 495 healthy controls were genotyped using the Sequenom MassARRAY platform. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to evaluate the association of ACYP2 polymorphisms with IgAN risk. Results: We observed that rs843720 was significantly associated with an increased risk of IgAN (allele G: OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.01–1.49, p = 0.036; dominant model: OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.01–2.37, p =0.044; log-additive model: OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.04–1.95, p = 0.026) before Bonferroni correction. The SNP rs12615793 was also significantly associated with an increased IgAN risk in the recessive model (OR = 3.33, 95% CI: 1.05–10.51, p = 0.042) before Bonferroni correction. Conclusion: These findings suggested that polymorphisms (rs843720 and rs12615793) of ACYP2 may be pivotal in the development of IgAN. However, more functional and association studies with larger sample sizes should be performed to further validate our results in the future.

Common flame retardants, such as halogen-based materials, are being phased-out owing to their harmful environmental and health effects. We prepared poly-(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol) (PZS) microspheres, nanotubes, capsicum-like nanotubes, and branched nanotubes as flame retardants. An increase in reaction temperature changed the morphology from nanotubes to microspheres. A PZS shape had a positive effect on the flame retardancy of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The PZS with a capsicum-like nanotube morphology had the best flame retardancy, and the PET limiting oxygen index increased from 25.2% to 34.4%. The flame retardancy capability was followed by PZS microspheres (33.1%), branched nanotubes (32.8%), and nanotubes (32.5%). The capsicum-like nanotubes promote the formation of highly dense and continuous carbon layers, and they release a non-combustible gas (CO2). This study confirms polyphosphazene-based flame retardants as viable and environmentally-friendly alternatives to common flame retardants. It also presents a novel and facile design and synthesis of morphology-controlled nanomaterials with enhanced flame retardant properties.

In this study, a kind of inorganic composite flame retardant (Sep@Fe2O3) was prepared by combining solution deposition and calcination methods using sepiolite microfiber material as carrier. This inorganic compound flame retardant was combined with waterborne polyurethane (WPU) through layer-by-layer method to prepare WPU composites. The SEM and EDS, TEM, and XRD were used to characterize the microscopic morphology and crystal structure of WPU composites. Thermogravimetric analysis tests confirmed the good thermal stability of WPU/Sep@Fe2O3 composites; at the temperature of 600°C, the carbon residual percentage of WPU/Sep, WPU/Fe2O3, and WPU/Sep@Fe2O3 composites is 7.3%, 12.2%, and 13.4%, respectively, higher than that of WPU (1.4%). Vertical combustion tests proved better flame-retardant property of WPU/Sep@Fe2O3 composite-coated cotton than noncoated cotton. The microcalorimeter test proved that the PHRR of WPU/Sep@Fe2O3 composites decreased by 61% compared with that of WPU. In addition, after combining with Sep@Fe2O3, the breaking strength of WPU increased by 35%.

Abstract Clostridium novyi-NT (CVN-NT) spores germinate in hypoxic regions of tumors and have successfully cured induced neoplasia in mouse models and resulted in objective tumor responses in naturally developing neoplasia in the dog. The objective of this pilot, descriptive, prospective, clinical investigation, was to evaluate and describe the immune response to CNV-NT spores to better understand which immune pathways might play a role in the response to this bacteriolytic immunotherapy. Intratumoral injection of CNV-NT spores result in increased phagocytosis and NK cell-like function after treatment. Intravenous injection of CNV-NT spores resulted in increased LPS-induced TNF-α production, LTA-induced IL-10 production and NK cell-like function post-treatment. Increased NK cell-like function was sustained to 28 (intratumoral) or 56 (intravenous) days post-treatment, and increased phagocytic function was sustained to 28 days post-treatment suggesting that CNV-NT spores induce longer-term immune cell function changes. Future investigations evaluating long-term immune system changes and associations between immune function and tumor remission rates should include evaluation of these pathways.

Abstract Background Clostridium novyi-NT (CNV-NT), has shown promise as a bacterolytic therapy for solid tumors in mouse models and in dogs with naturally developing neoplasia. Factors that impact the immunologic response to therapy are largely unknown. The goal of this pilot study was to determine if plasma immune biomarkers, immune cell function, peripheral blood cytological composition and tumor characteristics including evaluation of a PET imaging surrogate of tumor tissue hypoxia could predict which dogs with naturally developing naïve neoplasia would develop an inflammatory response to CNV-NT. Results Dogs that developed an inflammatory response to CNV-NT had a higher heart rate, larger gross tumor volume, greater tumor [64Cu]ATSM SUVMax, increased constitutive leukocyte IL-10 production, more robust NK cell-like function and greater peripheral blood lymphocyte counts compared to dogs that did not develop an inflammatory response to CNV-NT. Of these, unstimulated leukocyte IL-10 production, heart rate, and gross tumor volume appeared to be the best predictors of which dogs will develop an inflammatory response to CNV-NT. Conclusions Development of inflammation in response to CNV-NT is best predicted by pretreatment unstimulated leukocyte IL-10 production, heart rate, and gross tumor volume.

Phosphorus (P) is a necessary nutrient for plant growth and plays an important role in plant metabolisms; however, the majority of P in soil is in insoluble forms. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert the insoluble phosphates into plant-available forms and may have the potential for use in sustainable agricultural practices. This study examined the effects of two native PSB, namely Bacillus aryabhattai (JX285) and Pseudomonas auricularis (HN038), and a mixture of both strains (1:1) on the growth of Camellia oleifera Abel. seedlings. The results showed a significant promotion of the growth of C. oleifera plants by three inoculation treatments. All the PSB inoculation treatments could improve the leaf nitrogen (N) and P content and had positive effects on the available N, P, and potassium (K) content of rhizosphere soil. A co-inoculation of the two native PSB strains caused a synergistic effect and achieved the best benefit. In conclusion, B. aryabhattai and P. auricularis could be used as biological agents instead of chemical fertilizers for agricultural production to reduce environmental pollution and increase the yield of tea oil.

Endophytes are important components of forest ecosystems, and have potential use in the development of medical drugs and the conservation of wild medicinal plants. This study aimed to examine the diversity and antimicrobial activities of endophytic fungi from a medicinal plant, Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers. The results showed that a total of 970 isolates were obtained from root, stem, leaf, and fruit segments of L. cubeba. All the fungal endophytes belonged to the phylum Ascomycota and could be classified into three taxonomic classes, nine orders, twelve families, and seventeen genera. SF15 (Colletotrichum boninense) was the dominant species in L. cubeba. Leaves harbored a greater number of fungal endophytes but lower diversity, while roots harbored the maximum species diversity of endophytic fungi. For the antimicrobial activities, seventeen isolates could inhibit the growth of plant pathogenic fungi, while the extracts of six endophytes showed antimicrobial activity to all the tested pathogenic fungi. Among these endophytes, SF22 (Chaetomium globosum) and SF14 (Penicillium minioluteum) were particularly effective in inhibiting seven plant pathogenic fungi growths and could be further explored for their potential use in biotechnology, medicine, and agriculture.

Food supply from forests is a fundamental component of forest ecosystem services, but information relating to suitability for human consumption and sustainable utilization of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in developing countries is lacking. To address this gap in knowledge, diverse datasets of edible plants and macro-fungi were obtained from field collections, historical publications, and community surveys across seven cities in Guangdong Province (GP), southern China. Seven edible parts and five food categories of plant species were classified according to usage and specific nutrient components. Edible plant species were also categorized into different seasons and life forms. Our results show that at least 100 plant species (with 64 plant species producing fruit) and 20 macro-fungi were commonly used as edible forest products in subtropical GP. There were 55 and 57 species providing edible parts in summer and autumn, respectively. Many edible plants had multiple uses. Tree and herbaceous species made up the majority of the total. Our study provides evidence that both edible plants and macro-fungi can enrich the food supply for residents in rural and urban areas by acting as supplemental resources. We therefore suggest that, in spite of the prevalence of imported foods due to modern infrastructure, edible NTFPs from subtropical forests might be leveraged to support the increasing demand for food in an era of rapid urbanization and global change.
