Abstract

In this thesis, we have particular interest in the hydrogen recovery from a hydrogen/hydrocarbon refinery waste mixture. Hydrogen is one of the clean, affordable and environmentally friendly energy sources. However, the current industry is not focused on the production or use of hydrogen as an energy carrier or a fuel for energy generation. Membrane separations are an economic alternative to either pressure swing adsorption separations or cryogenic separations. Transport across thin membranes can produce chemical and physical separations at a relatively low price. Thus, the diffusion of fluid gas-mixtures inside a porous material is an important factor in membrane separations. This research involves the mathematical modelling of adsorption and diffusion in microporous carbon membranes and particularly the Selective Surface Flow (SSF) carbon membranes developed by Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Molecular simulations are used to predict the performance of the SSF membranes for hydrogen/hydrocarbon mixture separation under realistic conditions of temperature pressure and bulk gas compositions. Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (NEMD) gives a fully rigorous account of the dynamics of adsorption and diffusion at an atomic level, by integrating the equations of motion of adsorbed molecules interacting with each other, and with the surface, according to specified intermolecular potentials. In the NEMD simulations performed, it is assumed that all the pores in the membranes are identical, unconnected and open to the surface. However, this single-pore assumption is unlikely to occur in a real material. A real membrane contains pores of different sizes, connected together in a pore network, allowing the possibility of connectivity effects that are not accommodated by a single-pore model. Thus, the fundamentals of critical path analysis (CPA) are used to characterise the pore network structure. The CPA shows that species are selectively transported essentially through distinct sub-networks within the pore network of the membrane. The simulation results are compared with experimental permeabilities obtained from the Air Products selective surface flow membrane for a mixture of hydrogen/methane, relevant to the e.g. recovery of hydrogen from catalytic reformer offgas.

22. Understanding Our Understanding of Strategic Scenarios: What Role Do Chunks Play?

Abstract

There is a crucial debate concerning the nature of chess chunks: One current possibility states that chunks are built by encoding particular combinations of pieces-on-squares (POSs), and that chunks are formed mostly by "close" pieces (in a "Euclidean" sense). A complementary hypothesis is that chunks are encoded by abstract, semantic information. This article extends recent experiments and shows that chess players are able to perceive strong similarity between very different positions if the pieces retain the same abstract roles in both of them. This casts doubt on the idea that POS information is the key information encoded in chess chunks, and this article proposes, instead, that the key encoding involves the abstract roles that pieces (and sets of pieces) play--a theoretical standpoint in line with the research program in semantics that places analogy at the core of cognition. Abstract

Objetivando verificar a freqüência de enterovírus (EV), leptospiras e arbovírus como agentes causais da síndrome da meningite asséptica (SMA), em períodos não-epidêmicos, e comparar os pacientes com e sem diagnóstico etiológico determinado, foram selecionados 112 pacientes de idade entre 3 meses e 15 anos, com suspeita clínica de SMA, referenciados para Hospital Couto Maia, especializado em Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias (Salvador, Bahia), Em 44,6% (n=50) a etiologia foi determinada: enterovírus em 37,7% (n=42) dos casos, pelo teste de PCR Amplicor, por cultura do líquor e/ou de fezes; a Leptospira sp. em 7,1% (n=8), pelo método da micro-aglutinação, e nenhum caso de arbovírus foi detectado (inibição da hemaglutinação passiva). Entre os 14 enterovírus dos 22 isolados, foram identificados seis diferentes sorotipos, sendo o Echovirus-4 predominante (27,2%; 6/22) entre outros (Coxsackie B2, B3, B6 e B9; EV 71). Conclui-se que, os enterovírus foram os agentes mais freqüentes, e que a leptospirose deve ser lembrada no diagnóstico diferencial da SMA. Uma vez que as características clínicas e liquóricas dos pacientes dos grupos com e sem determinação do agente etiológico foram semelhantes, pode-se supor que o diagnóstico presuntivo de SMA é de provável etiologia viral ou pela leptospira.

41. Epidemiologia das infecções por rotavírus no Brasil e os desafios para o seu controle

Abstract

Os rotavírus causam de 600.000 a 870.000 óbitos por ano entre crianças em todo o mundo. Esses vírus foram visualizados pela primeira vez no Brasil em 1976, a partir da microscopia eletrônica das fezes de crianças diarréicas em Belém, Pará. Estudos conduzidos em hospitais registraram prevalência de diarréia por rotavírus de 12% e 42%. A par disso, investigações longitudinais assinalaram taxa média de 0,25 episódio de diarréia por criança/ano. Os tipos G1, G2, G3 e G4 representam cerca de 2/3 das amostras circulantes, porém, sustenta-se que o genótipo P[8], G5 associa-se a, no mínimo, 10% das diarréias. Estudos sobre a imunidade natural para rotavírus revelaram que 70% das crianças adquirem anticorpos já aos 4-5 anos de idade. A vacina tetravalente, de origem símio-humana (RRV-TV) conferiu proteção de 35% após dois anos de estudo; contudo, o nível protetor alcançou 60% no primeiro ano de vida. A RRV-TV, no norte do Brasil, revelou eficácia de 75% frente às diarréias graves. Há poucos meses interrompeu-se o uso dessa vacina nos EUA devido à ocorrência de intussuscepção como efeito colateral. É provável que futuros experimentos no Brasil contemplem outras "candidatas" a vacina contra rotavírus, que não a RRV-TV.
