This is an open access book. Research and teaching activities in the fields of language, literature and culture are still being carried out even during the Covid -19 era that hit the world. It is undeniable that the results of research and learning of language, literature and culture at this time were a bit hindered because most activities were carried out from home. During the Covid-19 period, which started in early 2020, practically more activities were done at home. Likewise, institutions during the Covid-19 era were carried out online. For example, the Language Agency continues to carry out activities, but it is carried out online, such as online webinars that contribute to the wider community in accordance with the duties and functions of the Language Agency, carried out using a hybrid method or completely online. Various events are packaged creatively and innovatively to produce a new spirit in speaking. Research and teaching of language, literature and culture during the Covid-19 period resulted in many amazing innovations and creativity in line with technological developments. Covid-19 has inspired many in research on language, literature and culture. In the field of language, you can see research on the language used in Covid-19, such as said cases of suspected respiratory tract infection, ODP (People Under Monitoring), confirmed cases (a person who is late known to be infected with Covid-19, etc. That's the content -Content on YouTube about the use of language is a hot object of research to research. In terms of culture, the Government is making various efforts to break the chain of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in a massive and systematic manner. Covid-19 is not only a deadly virus, but has a domino effect that is also terrible. One of the policies used by the government in preventing and controlling the spread of Covid-19 is implementing the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB)policy As an investment, culture also requires strategies and enablers so that it is able to achieve the target of the happiness and welfare of the Indonesian people. This strategy is implemented through providing for a diversity of cultural expressions, developing cultural practices, utilizing cultural promotion objects, accelerating institutional reform, and increasing the government's role as a facilitator. Teaching issues, especially teaching methods of language, literature and culture, need to be highlighted in terms of IT-based innovation and creativity after Covid-19. How especially teaching methods in applying the material. Research on learning methods has also been carried out a lot, especially methods that focus on students entering the new normal era or the new era after Covid-19 with innovative research and learning of language, literature and culture. It is interesting to reveal a major event, namely the 3rd International Conference on Linguistics and Cultural Studies sponsored by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, Makassar.

The Book of Proceedings features a selection of papers presented at the 54th Linguistics Colloquium: “Linguistic Encoding / Decoding in Global Contexts,” held from September 19th-22nd, 2019, at the Institute of Foreign Languages, Moscow City University (Moscow, Russia). The volume includes 23 papers covering a range of linguistic topics, including cognitive semantics, historical linguistics, stylistics, pragmatics, translation studies, and communication studies.

The two-volume proceedings set LNAI 14338 and 14339 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Speech and Computer, SPECOM 2023, held in Dharwad, India, during November 29–December 2, 2023.The 94 papers included in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 174 submissions. They focus on all aspects of speech science and technology: ​automatic speech recognition; computational paralinguistics; digital signal processing; speech prosody; natural language processing; child speech processing; speech processing for medicine; industrial speech and language technology; speech technology for under-resourced languages; speech analysis and synthesis; speaker and language identification, verification and diarization.

Linguistic research has always, either explicitly or implicitly, dealt with the interaction of linguistic phenomena and extralinguistic reality. Whether we are talking about targeted analyses of the nature of their interaction or whether this interaction is implied and taken for granted, linguistics has always been interested in its dynamics and manifestations. Thanks to the abundance of communicative channels (primarily those enabled/afforded by the electronic media) that modern society employs to satisfy its communication needs, the interaction between linguistic phenomena and the extralinguistic reality is becoming richer and more diversified. This is the reason why the 2020 Croatian Applied Linguistics Conference was precisely dedicated to this topic.

Meaning lies at the very heart of the development of language. Therefore, it is not surprising that the linguists have long been fascinated by the study of meaning, from the early days of the discipline to the present. Over time, the approach to meaning has evolved, shifting from structuralist analyses of linguistic signs to a focus on the combinatory potential of grammatical structures. Currently, the dominant cognitive-semantics approach examines meaning in relation to concepts and the abilities of the human brain. One of the most intriguing questions throughout the history of semantics has been the relationship between an individual and the linguistic community within the framework of the wider sign-meaning relation. This essential but insufficiently explored relationship was the central topic of the 33rd International Conference of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society.

Intitulé « Représentations », le dixième volume de Dixit Grammatica est composé de dix articles, principalement issus de la troisième édition du Colloque Jeunes Chercheurs de l'UR 1339-Linguistique, Langues et Parole (Lilpa) de l'Université de Strasbourg. Les contributions ci-rassemblées prennent ainsi pour objet d'étude général la notion de représentation pour l'aborder sous différentes coutures. Elles s'inscrivent dans les domaines des sciences du langage (dont la sémantique, la syntaxe et l'analyse de discours), du français langue étrangère, du droit et de la littérature, entre autres disciplines. Pour ce qui est des approches adoptées, ce sont les démarches descriptive, contrastive et didactique qui l'emportent. Enfin, ce sont différentes langues naturelles - le français, l'anglais, l'arabe et l'allemand, parmi d'autres - que les contributeurs ont choisies comme bases empiriques.

New Perspectives in Greek Linguistics is a selection of papers presenting some of the ongoing research in Greek Linguistics. The contributions in this volume, which have their origin in the 4th Athens Postgraduate Conference in Linguistics, refer to various theoretical frameworks and cover a wide range of topics (from phonology of dialects to acquisition of syntax); however, they share the common reference to Greek and Theoretical Linguistics. The second common feature is a tendency to investigate already known problems using new methods, considering different factors from previous research or introducing innovative ideas. The volume is dedicated to Professor Gaberell Drachman and Professor Angeliki Malikouti-Drachman as a small token of gratitude for their ceaseless presence and their contribution to Theoretical Linguistics, to Greek Linguistics and to postgraduate studies in Linguistics in Greece. This volume is of particular interest to linguists working on various areas of Greek Linguistics, especially those who would like to keep up with ongoing research. It presents an opportunity to see the application of linguistic theory in Greek and the current comparative research.

This volume explores the implications of Chinese for linguistic theory building and for the field of second language acquisition. Bringing together selected papers from the first International Symposium on Chinese Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, it sheds light upon under-documented topics in a variety of areas within theoretical and applied research. The topics covered here include competing approaches within optimality theory to phonological opacity, formal solutions to puzzles in Shanghainese morphosyntax, and different approaches to polarity items and presentational sentences in Chinese. With regard to applied linguistics, the contributions in this volume address challenges in the acquisition of Chinese phonology by L1 Danish speakers as well as the acquisition of the Mandarin ba construction by Cantonese learners, and the expression of social judgements in the L1 and L2. Taken together, the papers in this volume contribute to the empirical documentation of aspects of the Chinese language and its acquisition, as well as helping to unpack the significance of Chinese for mainstream linguistic theory.

This book presents a collection of research papers from both experienced and emerging scholars, some of whom presented their work at the international conference ‘Language Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century: Linguistic, Educational and Intercultural Aspects'held in June 2018 and organised by the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the FIPLV Nordic-Baltic Region, and the Language Teachers'Association of Lithuania. The book consists of three parts, the first being devoted to language teaching and teacher education. The second section explores literary and cultural issues, while the third part encompasses linguistic and media discourse studies.

This collection is the fifth volume of selected papers to emerge from Columbia School (CS) linguistics conferences. A radically functionalist approach, CS shares with Cognitive linguistics the view that grammar is composed of form-meaning correspondences. CS views language as a symbolic tool whose structure is shaped both by its communicative function and by the characteristics of its users. The volume includes papers on methodological issues and innovative analyses on English, Spanish, and Mandarin that illustrate the value of the strict application of clearly spelled out theoretical principles to the execution of linguistic analysis. Four of the volume's eleven papers are written in Spanish, and all papers have abstracts in both English and Spanish. An introduction highlights the theoretical and analytical premises of CS, and their differences from and similarities with cognitive-functional approaches. Translation Studies already face new tasks in order to take account of and to discuss the changing translation environment, in order to seek new approaches and tools for description, analysis and teaching activities. Questo volume contiene, pur con qualche aggiunta, gran parte dei lavori presentati nel convegno Il gioco, l'enigma, l'inganno nella linguistica e nella pratica letteraria, svoltosi a Urbino nei giorni 29–30 novembre 2012 all'interno della più ampia rassegna interdisciplinare Urbinoir, e ha come oggetto proprio l'interazione fra l'enigma, il gioco di parole e la componente ludica all'interno di discipline anche fra di loro assai eterogenee.

These conference proceedings contain papers presented at the Sixth Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English entitled Communication across Genres and Discourses. The conference was organised by the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University and was held on 11-12 September 2014. The Conference was dedicated to current trends and developments in English linguistics studies with a focus on communication in various genres and discourses. The contributions deal with a wide range of linguistic topics, such as discourse analysis, stylistics, translation studies, pragmatics, genre analysis, hybrid types of discourse, and multi-media communication.

This book is a collection of articles in English, German and French which were presented at the 3rd International Linguistics Conference on the Questions of the Theory of the Language and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages in Taganrog, Russia. This volume encompasses contributions of the 47th Linguistics Colloquium at the University of Olsztyn (Poland) concerning the Materiality and Mediality of Linguistic Communication. In the last two decades, linguists have expressed a growing interest in the increasing presence of the media in all areas of life. Against this background, linguistic utterances in their communicative, functional, medial and cultural context have become subjects of research.

From Language to Discourse contains selected texts from the 6th and 7th Linguistics Sharing Forums, which took place at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, on 25th November 2011 and 23rd November 2012, respectively.The articles included in this volume present the results of ongoing research in different domains of linguistics, such as phonology, language acquisition, syntax, and terminology. It is important to mention that these papers should be seen as work in progress, given that the young researchers who authored them are not yet PhD degree holders. However, all articles have been evaluated by an academic committee prior to publication.In addition, this book also includes the publication of two papers authored by João Costa, and Maria Antónia Coutinho, senior researchers of the Linguistics Centre of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL).

This volume aims to represent the breadth and depth of current linguistic research of predominantly young linguists and thus to produce a snapshot of topical linguistic issues and trends. Therefore, it presents papers from systemic linguistics next to ones on text linguistics, sociolinguistics and the didactics of language. The volume is based on talks given at the 14th Norddeutsches Linguistisches Kolloquium 2013 in Halle an der Saale. The book contains 14 contributions in English, and three in German.

This third volume of the Interfaces in Language series brings together a collection of papers which were presented at the University of Kent's Interfaces in Language 3 conference of May 2011. In line with the conference's title, applications which held true to the interface theme were invited, yet no restrictions were placed on the way in which ‘interface'was interpreted. A range of talks were thus included, some of which conformed to established demarcations within the discipline, others of which flouted them entirely and unashamedly. All were welcome. The result was a heterogeneous set of talks, interspersed with and complemented by lively discussions, confirming that the interdisciplinary setting staged was a successful way of cultivating discussion between linguists who might otherwise not cross paths. The papers chosen for publication here include both diachronic and synchronic approaches to language, generative and non-generative frameworks, as well as typological and theory-driven perspectives. The result can only be described as an eclectic mix. We invite the reader to decide upon its success.

Der Band widmet sich der Mehrsprachigkeit und den sprachlichen Repertoires von Schülern mit Migrationshintergrund in Frankreich und Deutschland. Im ersten Teil dieser soziolinguistischen Studie steht die Analyse von Interviews mit Grundschülern türkischer Herkunft in den Regionen zu beiden Seiten des Oberrheins im Mittelpunkt. Dabei richtet sich die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl auf den Ausbau der sprachlichen Repertoires in der Schule als auch auf den Sprachkontakt in Schule und Familie. Ausgehend von diesen Analysen liegt im zweiten Teil der Studie der Akzent auf der Schulsprachenpolitik in Frankreich und Deutschland, die einen Erklärungsrahmen dafür darstellt, wie sich bei den Kindern türkischer Herkunft der Ausbau des sprachlichen Repertoires entwickelt. So wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Stellung den Sprachen und welche Räume der Mehrsprachigkeit in Schulprogrammen, in offiziellen Texten zum muttersprachlichen Unterricht und in innovativen Projekten in der grenzüberschreitenden Untersuchungsregion zugewiesen werden.

The present volume collects contributions addressing different aspects of the measurement of linguistic differences, a topic which probably is as old as language itself but at the same time has acquired renewed interest over the last decade or so, reflecting a rapid development of data-intensive computing in all fields of research, including linguistics.

Eight Decades of General Linguistics presents the key lectures delivered at the eighteen conferences organized by the Permanent International Committee of Linguists and also a history of the Committee itself. The contributions of outstanding scholars such as Otto Jesperson, Louis Hjelmslev, André Martinet, Uriel Weinreich, Noam Chomsky and many other linguists cannot be over-estimated. The majority of the papers address a radically new topic, each of which became one of the central issues in subsequent linguistic research. In addition to their empirical findings and/or the theoretical innovations presented in their papers, each contribution is still interesting and pivotal to the development of contemporary linguistics.

The Fifth International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science was held at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, 27 August to 2 September 1975. The Congress was held under the auspices of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science, Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, and was sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Western Ontario. As those associated closely with the work of the Division over the years know well, the work undertaken by its members varies greatly and spans a number of fields not always obviously related. In addition, the volume of work done by first rate scholars and scientists in the various fields of the Division has risen enormously. For these and related reasons it seemed to the editors chosen by the Divisional officers that the usual format of publishing the proceedings of the Congress be abandoned in favour of a somewhat more flexible, and hopefully acceptable, method of pre­ sentation. Accordingly, the work of the invited participants to the Congress has been divided into four volumes appearing in the University of Western Ontario Series in Philosophy of Science. The volumes are entitled, Logic, Foundations of Mathematics and Computability Theory, Foun­ dational Problems in the Special Sciences, Basic Problems in Methodol­ ogy and Linguistics, and Historical and Philosophical Dimensions of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science.

The present volume is a selection of papers presented at the SinFoniJa 3 conference, held at the University of Novi Sad in October 2010. A wide range of linguistics-related topics were covered at this event, and the selection before you represents the variety and quality of research the editors wish to promote. It aims to uphold sound linguistic theorizing as the basis of natural language analysis and cutting-edge applied-linguistics concerns. Among the novel linguistic topics in the fields of syntax, phonology, semantics and natural language processing, the book includes (re)analyses of negative imperatives; constructions with multiple occurrences of the semantically interdependent indefinite expressions; future constructions; verbal categories; demonstrative reinforcers; word order and clitic doubling; control constituents; non-final information focus; clitic placement, named entity recognition; prosody prediction in speech synthesis; and covers data from various languages inlcuding English, Polish, Turkic, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Serbian and others. In addition, the research presented here shows why the assumptions regarding the interfaces of these domains, which we often take for granted, require solid empirical grounding.

While Darwin's grand view of evolution has undergone many changes and shown up in many facets, there remains one outstanding common feature in its 150-year history: since the very beginning, branching trees have been the dominant scheme for representing evolutionary processes. Only recently, network models have gained ground reflecting contact-induced mixing or hybridization in evolutionary scenarios. In biology, research on prokaryote evolution indicates that lateral gene transfer is a major feature in the evolution of bacteria. In the field of linguistics, the mutual lexical and morphosyntactic borrowing between languages seems to be much more central for language evolution than the family tree model is likely to concede. In the humanities, networks are employed as an alternative to established phylogenetic models, to express the hybridization of cultural phenomena, concepts or the social structure of science. However, an interdisciplinary display of network analyses for evolutionary processes remains lacking. Therefore, this volume includes approaches studying the evolutionary dynamics of science, languages and genomes, all of which were based on methods incorporating network approaches.

Language Interpretation and Communication: a NATO Symposium, was a multi-disciplinary meeting held from September 26 to October 1st 1977 at the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the Isle of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. The Symposium explored both applied and theoretical aspects of conference interpre­ tation and of sign language interpretation. The Symposium was sponsored by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and we would like to express our thanks to Dr. B. A. Bayrakter of the Scientific Affairs Division and to the Members of the NATO Special Programme Panel on Human Factors for their support. We would also like to thank Dr. F. This collection of articles contains the English contributions to the 4th Austrian Students'Conference of Linguistics (Österreichische Studierenden-Konferenz der Linguistik, ÖSKL), which was held in November 2011 at the University of Innsbruck. With this collection, the editors want to make the insights and the knowledge presented at the 4th ÖSKL available in written format to a wider public.The contributions present in this collection are excerpts from PhD as well as diploma theses and seminar papers. The fifteen papers collected in this volume are very diverse, as are the authors themselves, who come from nine different countries, from Portugal in the West, Iran in the East and Norway in the North.The papers come from a variety of linguistic subdisciplines. Besides a strong focus on syntax, cognitive and historical linguistics, there are papers exploring pragmatics, foreign language acquisition, phonology and sociolinguistics.

This refereed volume is a collection of selected scholarly articles resulting from research conducted for the first international Australian Workshop on Afro-Asiatic Linguistics (AWAAL), held on 11–13 September 2009 at the State Library of Queensland, Cultural Centre, Stanley Place, South Bank, Brisbane; as well as at the Great Court, the University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane. The University of Queensland has been home to scholars and linguists such as Georges Perec, Eric Partridge and Rodney Huddleston.World-class papers were delivered by established academics and promising postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students from all over the globe, including Australia, Cameroon, Canada, Eritrea, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Poland, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States. They all analysed languages and cultures belonging to the Afro-Asiatic family, e.g. Egyptian, Berber, Cushitic, Omotic, Chadic and Semitic.

Neuropsycholinguistics - the interaction between linguistics, psycholinguistics, and aphasiology - has, over the past two decades, established itself as a multidisciplinary science worthy of its recent attention in Drs. Nespoulous and Villiard's Morphology, Phonology and Aphasia. In this new volume in the Springer Series in Neuropsychology, the editors have most successfully developed a multidisciplinary team of research through the organization of two symposia - one on'Morphology and Aphasia', the other focused on'Phonology and Aphasia'. Toward the goal of better understanding the aphasic patients'verbal behavior, the contributing authors of this important work offer their respective expertise, continuing the recent evolution of developments in the fields of morphology and phonology.

This volume is a selection of papers presented at “Linguists of Tomorrow”, the 1st Cyprus Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, held at the University of Cyprus on 7–8 May 2010. The collection includes nine chapters by postgraduate students of linguistics as well as two illustrious keynote papers by Prof. Barbara Lust and Prof. Thomas McFadden. The topics range from theoretical linguistics (syntax, semantics, morphology, and phonology) to psycholinguistics (first and second language acquisition, language impairments, and language processing) and applied linguistics (bilingualism, dictionaries, writing, and ethnolinguistics). As such, this collection of papers by established as well as up-and-coming researchers will appeal to a wide range of scholars, students and academics alike, interested in current issues in linguistics.

Speech sound production is one of the most complex human activities: it is also one of the least well understood. This is perhaps not altogether surprising as many of the complex neurological and physiological processes involved in the generation and execution of a speech utterance remain relatively inaccessible to direct investigation, and must be inferred from careful scrutiny of the output of the system -from details of the movements of the speech organs themselves and the acoustic consequences of such movements. Such investigation of the speech output have received considerable impetus during the last decade from major technological advancements in computer science and biological transducing, making it possible now to obtain large quantities of quantative data on many aspects of speech articulation and acoustics relatively easily. Keeping pace with these advancements in laboratory techniques have been developments in theoretical modelling of the speech production process. There are now a wide variety of different models available, reflecting the different disciplines involved -linguistics, speech science and technology, engineering and acoustics. The time seems ripe to attempt a synthesis of these different models and theories and thus provide a common forum for discussion of the complex problem of speech production. Such an activity would seem particularly timely also for those colleagues in speech technology seeking better, more accurate phonetic models as components in their speech synthesis and automatic speech recognition systems.

The Fourth International Congress for Logic, Methodology, and Philos­ ophy of Science was held in Bucharest, Romania, on August 29-September 4, 1971. The Congress was organized, under the auspices of the Inter­ national Union for History and Philosophy of Science, Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, by the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Romania, the Academy of Social and Political Sciences of the Socialist Republic of Romania, and the Ministry of Education of Romania. With more than eight hundred participating scholars from thirty-four countries, the Congress was one of the major scientific events of the year 1971. The dedicated efforts of the organizers, the rich and carefully planned program, and the warm and friendly atmosphere contributed to making the Congress a successful and fruitful forum of exchange of scientific ideas. The work of the Congress consisted of invited one hour and half-hour addresses, symposia, and contributed papers. The proceedings were organized into twelve sections of Mathematical Logic, Foundations of Mathematical Theories, Automata and Programming Languages, Philos­ ophy of Logic and Mathematics, General Problems of Methodology and Philosophy of Science, Foundations of Probability and Induction, Methodology and Philosophy of Physical Sciences, Methodology and Philosophy of Biological Sciences, Methodology and Philosophy of Psychological Sciences, Methodology and Philosophy of Historical and Social Sciences, Methodology and Philosophy of Linguistics, and History of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science.

The papers and comments published in the present volume represent the proceedings of a research workshop on the grammar and semantics of natural languages held at Stanford University in the fall of 1970. The workshop met first for three days in September and then for a period of two days in November for extended discussion and analysis. The workshop was sponsored by the Committee on Basic Research in Education, which has been funded by the United States Office of Education through a grant to the National Academy of Education and the National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council. We acknowledge with pleasure the sponsorship which made possible a series oflively and stimulating meetings that were both enjoyable and instructive for the three of us, and, we hope, for most of the participants, including a number of local linguists and philosophers who did not contribute papers but actively joined in the discussion. One of the central participants in the workshop was Richard Montague. We record our sense of loss at his tragic death early in 1971, and we dedicate this volume to his memory. None of the papers in the present volume discusses explicitly problems of education. In our view such a discussion is neither necessary nor sufficient for a contribution to basic research in education. There are in fact good reasons why the kind of work reported in the present volume constitutes an important aspect of basic research in education.

The volume presents new insights into two basic theoretical issues hotly debated in recent work on grammaticalization and language contact: grammatical replication and grammatical borrowability. The key issues are: How can grammatical replication be distinguished from other, superficially similar processes of contact-induced linguistic change, and under what conditions does it take place? Are there grammatical morphemes or constructions that are more easily borrowed than others, and how can language contact account for areal biases in the borrowing (vs. calquing) of grammatical formatives? The book is a major contribution to the ongoing theoretical discussion concerning the relationship between grammaticalization and language contact on a broad empirical basis.

Der Band enthält die Beiträge von drei Sektionen des Warschauer IVG-Kongresses. Die Sektion Sprache in der Literatur (betreut und bearbeitet von Anne Betten, Hans Höller und Rita Svandrlik) vereint literatur- und sprachwissenschaftliche Studien mit Schwerpunkt Sprache und Dialog in literarischen Texten. Die Beiträge bieten eine interdisziplinär und metaliterarisch ausgerichtete Analyse dichterischer Textsorten mit dem Ziel einer Integration unterschiedlicher Forschungsansätze. In den Beiträgen der Sektion Kontakt und Transfer in der Sprach- und Literaturgeschichte des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit (betreut und bearbeitet von Alexander Schwarz, Sabine Seelbach und Gerhild Scholz Williams) wird gezeigt, wie die Grundannahmen der new philology zu wichtigen Forschungsergebnissen in der Analyse des Zusammenhangs von Text und Kontext in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen (Intertextualitäts-, Varianz-, Performativitäts-, Performanzstudien) führen können. Dabei gelingt es, einen dialogischen Kontaktbegriff theoretisch zu begründen und empirisch zu verifizieren, der in der Inter- und Transkulturalitätsforschung operationalisiert werden kann. Die Beiträge der Sektion Die niederländische Sprachwissenschaft – diachronisch und synchronisch (betreut und bearbeitet von Philippe Hiligsmann, Stanislaw Predota und A. Agnes Sneller) demonstrieren die Vielfalt sprachwissenschaftlicher Problemstellungen der Niederlandistik sowohl in diachronischer als auch in synchronischer Perspektive.

This volume presents a collection of papers from the second Interfaces in Language conference, hosted from 5–7 May 2009 at the University of Kent at Canterbury by the University's Centre for Language and Lingustic Studies (CLLS). Borne of a dissatisfaction with the rigid division of linguistics into sub-disciplines, Interfaces 2 offered specialists a platform to explore links between different approaches, and attracted participation from ten countries on four continents, addressing a wide range of themes. Contributions are arranged under three thematic headings: Categories and Orthodoxies; Contact, Conflict and Repertoire; and Language and Cognition. All, in their different ways, offer a challenge to received thinking or the rigidity of established categories.The papers explore a range of linguistic interfaces, probing the frontiers at the structural level between semantics and pragmatics, or challenging the notion of a clear division between semantics and syntax. A number of papers examine, in different ways, the interface between speech and writing, while other contributors apply the techniques of linguistic analysis to the study of translation, or to the stylistics of literature or journalism. The rejection of rigid modes of thinking has produced, in Interfaces in Language 2, an eclectic collection of thought-provoking papers of rare originality and quality.

The present volume On Words and Sounds is a collection of selected papers from PLM 2009. The Poznań Linguistic Meeting (PLM) is an annual international general linguistics conference. The book consists of fifteen articles, each of which can be read separately or in relation to others. The book will definitely appeal to the academic readership interested in linguistic disciplines such as: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and clinical linguistics. Collectively, the contributions investigate the interrelationships among those disciplines as well as between language and music. The central aim for the scholars was to explore the PLM 2009 leitmotif “Variants, Variability, Variation” and show that the complete study of language involves diversified frameworks often rooted in interdisciplinary approaches.

Die Reihe wird auch weiterhin neue Impulse für die Forschung setzen und die zentrale Einsicht der Sprachwissenschaft präsentieren, dass Fortschritt in der Erforschung der menschlichen Sprachen nur durch die enge Verbindung von empirischen und theoretischen Analysen sowohl diachron wie synchron möglich ist. Daher laden wir hochwertige linguistische Arbeiten aus allen zentralen Teilgebieten der allgemeinen und einzelsprachlichen Linguistik ein, die aktuelle Fragestellungen bearbeiten, neue Daten diskutieren und die Theorieentwicklung vorantreiben.

This volume consists of selected papers from the 2009 meeting of the American Association for Corpus Linguistics. The chapters cover aspects of language use (usage-based accounts of morphology/syntax of English and Tok Pisin), language learning (corpus-based learning of English, syntactic development observable in a Learner Corpus of English, “core” vocabulary items for learners of English) and language documentation (a new and innovative usage-based frequency dictionary of English, proposals to broaden the traditional understanding of a corpus in various directions, e.g., constructing a corpus of the content of Japanese manga comics). Taken together, the thirteen chapters represent a good cross-section of strands of new work in corpus linguistics, as practised by international scholars working on English and other languages.

This volume resulted from the first Interfaces in Language conference held at the University of Kent, England, as a result of the need perceived for the orthodox distinctions made between the various perceived divisions in language study, e.g. syntax vs. semantics vs. pragmatics vs. phonology vs. morphology, to be expanded into a wider concept of linguistic interfaces, for example language and music, language and politics, languages in mutual contact, languages in mutual conflict, and language and literature.Potential contributors at the conference were encouraged to define and explore the particular interfaces which interested them, to see where there was common ground, where distinctions were to be made and where grey areas invite further investigation. The results were startling: contributors responded from America, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Spain and Switzerland as well as the UK, with themes ultimately grouped under three headings which have been roughly retained in this volume.Many of the wide range of resultant perspectives are represented here, as well as those treated by colleagues prevented at the last moment from attending the conference. Categories and Orthodoxies addresses some of the most traditional interfaces, whilst Contact and Conflict examines clashes and coalescences between languages, languages and politics, the mutual interaction of variants of a language and the imposition or choice of a non-native language over its native counterparts; and Language and Cognition sees language behaviour as partly at least influenced by factors other than those formally identified as strictly linguistic.
