How to measure the optical conductivity of atomically thin crystals is an important but challenging issue due to the weak light-matter interaction at the atomic scale. Photonic spin Hall effect, as a fundamental physical effect in light-matter interaction, is extremely sensitive to the optical conductivity of atomically thin crystals. Here, we report a precision measurement of the optical conductivity of graphene, where the photonic spin Hall effect acts as a measurement pointer. By incorporating with the weak-value amplification technique, the optical conductivity of monolayer graphene taken as a universal constant of $(0.993\pm0.005)\sigma_0$ is detected, and a high measuring resolution with $1.5\times10^{-8}\Omega^{-1}$ is obtained. For few-layer graphene without twist, we find that the conductivities increase linearly with layer number. Our idea could provide an important measurement technique for probing other parameters of atomically thin crystals, such as magneto-optical constant, circular dichroism, and optical nonlinear coefficient., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Compact and miniaturized devices with flexible functionalities are always highly demanded in optical integrated systems. Plasmonic nanosieve has been successfully harnessed as an ultrathin flat platform for complex manipulation of light, including holography, vortex generation and non-linear processes. Compared with most of reported single-functional devices, multi-functional nanosieves might find more complex and novel applications across nano-photonics, optics and nanotechnology. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a promising roadmap for nanosieve-based helical devices, which achieves full manipulations of optical vortices, including its generation, hybridization, spatial multiplexing, focusing and non-diffraction propagation etc., by controlling the geometric phase of spin light via over 121 thousands of spatially-rotated nano-sieves. Thanks to such spin-conversion nanosieve helical elements, it is no longer necessary to employ the conventional two-beam interferometric measurement to characterize optical vortices, while the interference can be realized natively without changing any parts of the current setup. The proposed strategy makes the far-field manipulations of optical orbital angular momentum within an ultrathin interface viable and bridges singular optics and integrated optics. In addition, it enables more unique extensibility and flexibility in versatile optical elements than traditional phase-accumulated helical optical devices.

We propose that the full Poincar\'{e} beam with any polarization geometries can be pictorially described by the hybrid-order Poincar\'{e} sphere whose eigenstates are defined as a fundamental-mode Gaussian beam and a Laguerre-Gauss beam. A robust and efficient Sagnac interferometer is established to generate any desired full Poincar\'{e} beam on the hybrid-order Poincar\'{e} sphere, via modulating the incident state of polarization. In this work, we develop a hybrid-order Poincar\'{e} sphere to describe the evolution of polarization states of wave propagation in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. We extend the orbital Poincar\'{e} sphere and high-order Poincar\'{e} sphere to a more general form. Polarization evolution in inhomogeneous anisotropic media with special geometry can be conveniently described by state evolution along the longitude line on the hybrid-order Poincar\'{e} sphere. Similar to that in previously proposed Poincar\'{e} spheres, the Berry curvature can be regarded as an effective magnetic field with monopole centered at the origin of sphere and Berry connection can be interpreted as the vector potential. Both the Berry curvature and the Pancharatnam-Berry phase on the hybrid-order Poincar\'{e} sphere are demonstrated to be proportional to the total angular momentum. We report the realization of tunable spin-dependent splitting in intrinsic photonic spin Hall effect. By breaking the rotational symmetry of a cylindrical vector beam, the intrinsic vortex phases that the two spin components of the vector beam carries, which is similar to the geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase, is no longer continuous in the azimuthal direction, and leads to observation of spin accumulation at the opposite edge of the beam. Due to the inherent nature of the phase and independency of light-matter interaction, the observed photonic spin Hall effect is intrinsic. Modulating the topological charge of the vector beam, the spin-dependent splitting can be enhanced and the direction of spin accumulation is switchable. Observation of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in dielectric-based metasurfaces with rotational symmetry breaking is presented. We find that the spin-dependent splitting is a unique angular splitting in the real position space, and is attributed to the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PB). Breaking the rotational symmetry of the PB phase by misalignment of the central axes of the incident beam and the metasurface, the spin-dependent shift is observable. We show that the spin-dependent shift can be enhanced by increasing the rotation rate of the metasurface, so the metasurface provides a great flexibility in the manipulation of photonic SHE.

We present a simple and efficient method to generate any cylindrical vector vortex (CVV) beams based on two cascaded metasurfaces. The metasurface works as a space-variant Panchratnam-Berry phase element and can produce any desirable vortex phase and vector polarization. The first metasurface is used to switch the sign of topological charges associated with vortex, and the second metasurface is applied to manipulate the local polarization. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel interferometric approach to generate arbitrary cylindrical vector beams on the higher order Poincare sphere. Our scheme is implemented by collinear superposition of two orthogonal circular polarizations with opposite topological charges. By modifying the amplitude and phase factors of the two beams, respectively, any desired vector beams on the higher order Poincare sphere with high tunability can be acquired. We present a simple and convenient method to yield cylindrical vector (CV) beams and realize its polarization evolution on higher-order Poincare sphere based on inhomogeneous birefringent metasurface. By means of local polarization transformation of the metasurface, it is possible to convert a light beam with homogeneous elliptical polarization into a vector beam with any desired polarization distribution. The Stokes parameters of the output light are measured to verify our scheme, which show well agreement with the theoretical prediction. Our method may provide a convenient way to generate CV beams, which is expected to have potential applications in encoding information and quantum computation.

We develop a geometric photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) which manifests as spin-dependent shift in momentum space. It originates from an effective space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase created by artificially engineering the polarization distribution of the incident light. Unlikely the previously reported PSHE involving the light-matter interaction, the resulting spin-dependent splitting in the geometric PSHE is purely geometrically depend upon the polarization distribution of light which can be tailored by assembling its circular polarization basis with suitably magnitude and phase. This metapolarization idea enables us to manipulate the geometric PSHE by suitably tailoring the polarization geometry of light. Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams whose polarization with a tunable spatial inhomogeneity can contribute to steering the space-variant PBP which creates a spin-dependent geometric phase gradient, thereby possibly realizing a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting. In this paper we theoretically investigate the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) of a Gaussian beam reflected from the interface between air and topological insulators (TIs). The photonic SHE is attributed to spin-orbit coupling and manifests itself as in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splitting. We reveal that the spin-orbit coupling effect in TIs can be routed by adjusting the axion angle variations. Unlike the transverse spin-dependent splitting, we find that the in-plane one is sensitive to the axion angle. It is shown that the polarization structure in magneto-optical Kerr effect is significantly altered due to the spin-dependent splitting in photonic SHE. We theoretically propose a weak measurement method to determine the strength of axion coupling by probing the in-plane splitting of photonic SHE.

We study the soliton mobility in nonlocal nonlinear media with an imprinted fading optical lattice. An inhomogeneous anisotropic medium with specific structure geometry can apply the tunable spin-dependent geometrical phase to the light passing through the medium, and thus can be used to steer the spin-dependent splitting (SDS) of light. In this paper, we exemplify this inference by the q plate, an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium. It is demonstrated that when a linearly polarized light beam normally passes through a q plate, k-space SDS first occurs, and then the real-space SDS in the far-field focal plane of a converging lens is distinguishable. Interestingly, the SDS, described by the normalized Stokes parameter S3 shows a multilobe and rotatable splitting pattern with rotational symmetry. Further, by tailoring the structure geometry of the q plate and/or the incident polarization angle of light, the lobe number and the rotation angle both are tunable. Our result suggests that the q plate can serve as a potential device for manipulating the photon spin states and enable applications such as in nano-optics and quantum information., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a metamaterial-based random polarization control plate to produce incoherent laser irradiation by exploiting the ability of metamaterial in local polarization manipulation of beam upon transmission via tuning its local geometry. As a proof-of-principle, we exemplify this idea numerically in a simple optical system using a typical L-shaped plasmonic metamaterial with locally varying geometry, from which the desired polarization distribution can be obtained. The calculating results illustrate that this scheme can effectively suppress the speckle contrast and increase irradiation uniformity, which has potential to satisfy the increasing requirements for incoherent laser irradiation., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

The spin Hall effect (SHE) of light in layered nanostructures is investigated theoretically in this paper. A general propagation model describing the spin-dependent transverse splitting in the SHE of light is established from the viewpoint of classical electrodynamics. We show that the transverse displacement of wave-packet centroid can be tuned to either a negative or a positive value, or even zero, by just adjusting the structure parameters, suggesting that the SHE of light in layered nanostructures can be enhanced or suppressed in a desired way. The inherent secret behind this interesting phenomenon is the optical Fabry-Perot resonance in the layered nanostructure. We present a physical explanation of Zitterbewegung-like effect near the zero-refractive-index point in a metamaterial slab in this paper. Between the negative and positive refractive index regions centered at the zero-refractive-index point, the transmittance spectrum distribution of the metamaterial slab is asymmetrical. When a symmetrical pulse propagates through the metamaterial slab, its transmitted spectrum becomes asymmetrical due to the asymmetry of the transmittance spectrum of the slab, leading to a transmitted pulse with an asymmetrical temporal shape. The asymmetry manifests a kind of temporally tailed oscillations, i.e., the Zitterbewegung-like effect. Further, the effect of the temporal and spatial widths of pulse, and the thickness of metamaterial slab on the tailed oscillations of the transmitted pulse has also been discussed. Our results agree well with what the other researchers obtained on the strength of relativistic quantum concepts; however, the viewpoint of our analysis is classical and irrelevant to relativistic quantum mechanics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
