In this work, optical observations of the nova V5584 Sgr are presented. These observations cover different phases including pre-maximum, early decline, and nebular. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen Balmer, Fe ii , and O i lines with P-Cygni profiles in the early phase, which are subsequently observed in complete emission. The presence of numerous Fe ii lines and low ejecta velocity aligns with the Fe ii type nova classification. From optical and NIR colours, it is clear that this nova manifests dust formation in the ejecta. The dust temperature and mass were estimated from a spectral energy distribution (SED) fit to the JHK band magnitudes and the Wide field Infrared Survey Explorer data. Light-curve analysis shows t |$_2$| and t |$_3$| values of |$\sim$| 26 and |$\sim$| 48 d, classifying the nova as moderately fast. The physical and chemical properties during early decline and later phases were evaluated using the photoionization code CLOUDY. The best-fitting model parameters from two epochs of multiwavelength spectra are compatible with a hot white dwarf source with a roughly constant luminosity of |$\sim$| (2.08 |$\pm$| 0.10) |$\times$| 10 |$^{36}$| erg s |$^{-1}$| . We find an ejected mass of |$\sim$| (1.59 |$\pm$| 0.04) |$\times$| 10 |$^{-4}$| M |$_{\odot }$|⁠. Abundance analysis indicates that the ejecta is significantly enriched relative to solar values, with O/H = 30.2, C/H = 10.8, He/H = 1.8, Mg/H = 1.68, Na/H = 1.55, and N/H = 45.5 in the early decline phase, and O/H = 4.5, Ne/H = 1.5, and N/H = 24.5 in the nebular phase. Many energy levels of singly ionized iron (Fe  ii , |$Z=26$|⁠) remain uncertain or experimentally unknown. Their identification and spectral line data are required in reliable astrophysical spectral analyses. In motivation for improving the atomic data of Fe  ii , we analysed emission spectra of a Fe–Ne plasma produced by a Penning discharge lamp recorded by high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy in the region 9000–27 000 cm |$^{-1}$| (11 111–3704 Å). Semi-empirical transition probability calculations and stellar spectra of Fe  ii were used to guide the analysis. In total, 24 energy levels of the 3d |$^6$| 4f and 3d |$^6$| 5d configurations of Fe  ii lying between 122 351 and 127 881 cm |$^{-1}$| were confirmed in the laboratory for the first time, in agreement with their identities proposed by previous investigations involving only stellar spectra. Uncertainties in level energies and transition wavelengths of the 24 levels are improved by up to an order of magnitude compared to previously published values. These results will enable more reliable application of Fe  ii in astrophysical spectroscopic analyses and support further investigations of the spectrum and energy levels of Fe  ii. Magnetic fields with strengths ranging from 300 to 500 kG have recently been discovered in a group of four extremely similar helium-rich hot subdwarf (He-sdO) stars. In addition to their strong magnetic fields, these He-sdO stars are characterised by common atmospheric parameters, clustering around Teff = 46 500 K, a log ɡ/cm s−1 close to 6, and intermediate helium abundances. Here we present the discovery of three additional magnetic hot subdwarfs, J123359.44–674929.11, J125611.42-575333.45, and J144405.79–674400.93. These stars are again almost identical in terms of atmospheric parameters, but, at B ≈ 200 kG, their magnetic fields are somewhat weaker than those previously known. The close similarity of all known He-sdOs implies a finely tuned formation channel. We propose the merging of a He white dwarf with a H+He white dwarf. A differential rotation at the merger interface may initiate a toroidal magnetic field that evolves via a magnetic dynamo to produce a poloidal field. This field is either directly visible at the surface or might diffuse towards the surface if initially buried. We further discuss a broad absorption line centred at about 4630 Å that is common to all magnetic He-sdOs. This feature may not be related to the magnetic field but instead to the intermediate helium abundances in these He-sdO stars, allowing the strong He II 4686 Å line to be perturbed by collisions with hydrogen atoms. The recent detection of CN-functionalized aromatics partly addresses the long-standing mystery of the apparent absence of five- and six-membered rings in interstellar environments. Nitrogen (N)-heterocycles, which are crucial as the fundamental structures of nucleobases, have been a focus of these aromatic searches due to their biological significance. Although N-heterocycles have not been conclusively detected in astrophysical environments, their presence in chondrites and meteorites signifies their interstellar and circumstellar connection. Precise spectral data identify the unique signatures of molecules, confirming their presence in space. In this light, this work reports an extensive computational investigation on interstellar 3-pyrroline, a five-membered ring N-heterocycle. This includes an alternative formation route in cold interstellar environments and highly accurate rotational and vibrational spectroscopy. The results indicate that 3-pyrroline can form on dust grain surfaces from vinyl cyanide, as its formation from pyrrole through double hydrogenation may lead to the formation of pyrrole itself via an H2-abstraction process. 3-Pyrroline's rotational transition at 52.3 GHz offers a potential tool for its detection in cold interstellar regions. Additionally, the strongest infrared (IR) features of 3-pyrroline at 16.09 and |$\sim$| 3.50 |$\mu$| m are observable with JWST. Proto- and young planetary nebulae comprise dense circumstellar envelopes made of molecular gas and dust, some of which hide compact ionized cores that host stellar systems with hot objects, and show high-velocity bipolar outflows launched from inside their cores by means of still unknown mechanisms. We present high-angular-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations (HPBW ≃ 30–50 mas) of CRL 618 at 1.35 mm covering the H30 α recombination line as well as ≃150 molecular lines. The ionized core is resolved, showing a size of ≃0 . ″ 8 × 0. ″ 5 and is elongated along the east–west direction. This region exhibits a remarkable incomplete ring-like structure with two bright spots to the north and south that are separated by ≃ 0. ″ 2 and shows deprojected velocity gradients ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 km s − 1 au − 1 . The 1 mm wavelength continuum emission is mostly produced by free–free emission with a small contribution from dust with an average spectral index of 0.28 ( S ν ∝ ν α ). The ionized core can roughly be modeled as a tilted hollow cylinder with a denser, incomplete equatorial band lacking its back side. We report the discovery in TMC-1 of two cyano derivatives of the PAH acenaphthylene (C12H8). We have found two series of lines with the QUIJOTE line survey that we assign to 1-C12H7CN and 5-C12H7CN. For the 1-isomer, we have detected and assigned 173 rotational transitions with J up to 46 and Ka up to 9, corresponding to 107 independent frequencies. For the 5-isomer, the identification is based on 56 individual lines, corresponding to 117 rotational transitions with J up to 40 and Ka up to 8. Identification of the carriers was achieved through a careful analysis of the derived rotational constants, which permit us to focus on molecules larger than naphthalene but smaller than anthracene and phenanthrene. Moreover, the derived rotational constants indicate that the species are planar; this allows us to discard derivatives of fluorene and acenaphthene, which are non-planar species. Quantum chemical calculations and subsequent chemical synthesis of these molecules, as well as the observation of their rotational transitions in the laboratory, unequivocally support our identifications. We also confirm, via a robust line-by-line detection, the previous claimed detection of 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene, which were obtained through statistical stacking techniques. The column densities of 1- and 5-cyanoacenaphthylene are (9.5 ± 0.9) × 1011 cm−2, while those of 1- and 2-cyanonapthalene are (5.5 ± 0.5) × 1011 cm−2. Hence, it seems that acenaphthylene could be a factor of 1.7 more abundant than naphthalene. These results support a scenario in which PAHs grow in cold dark clouds based on fused five- and six-membered carbon rings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the Lyman-α (Lyα) and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function (LF) in bins of redshift for quasars selected in the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS). A sample of 915 objects was selected at 2.7 < z < 5.3 within an effective area of ∼36 deg2 observed in 40 narrow-band (NB) filters (FWHM ∼ 120 Å). We cover the intermediate–bright luminosity regime of the LF ($ 10^{43.5} < (L_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha}/\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}) < 10^{45.5} $ ; −29 < MUV < −24). The continuous wavelength coverage of the PAUS NB set allows very efficient target identification and precise redshift measurements. We show that our method is able to retrieve a relatively complete (C ∼ 85%) and pure (P ∼ 90%) sample of Lyα-emitting quasars for LLyα > 1044 erg s−1. In order to obtain corrections for the LF estimation, and assess the accuracy of our selection method, we produced mock catalogs of 0 < z < 4.3 quasars and galaxies that mimic our target population and their main contaminants. Our results show a clear evolution of the Lyα and UV LFs, with a declining tendency in the number density of quasars toward increasing redshifts. In addition, the faint-end power-law slope of the Lyα LF becomes steeper with redshift, suggesting that the number density of Lyα-bright quasars declines faster than that of fainter emitters. By integrating the Lyα LF, we find that the total Lyα emitted by bright quasars per unit volume rapidly declines with increasing redshift, being subdominant to that of star-forming galaxies by several orders of magnitude by z ∼ 4. Finally, we stack the NB pseudo-spectra of a visually selected "golden sample" of 591 quasars to obtain photometric composite SEDs in bins of redshift, enabling us to measure the mean intergalactic medium absorption using the Lyman-α forest as a function of redshift, yielding results consistent with previous spectroscopic determinations. Context. Close white dwarf binaries (CWDBs) are considered to be progenitors of several exotic astronomical phenomena (e.g., type Ia supernovae, cataclysmic variables). These violent events are broadly used in studies of general relativity and cosmology. However, obtaining precise stellar parameter measurements for both components of CWDBs is a challenging task given their low luminosities, swift time variation, and complex orbits. High-resolution spectra (R > 20 000) are preferred but expensive, resulting in a sample size that is insufficient for robust population study. Recently, studies have shown that the more accessible low-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra (LRS) may also provide enough information for spectral decomposition. To release the full potential of the less expensive low-resolution spectroscopic surveys, and thus greatly expand the CWDB sample size, it is necessary to develop a robust pipeline for spectra decomposition and analysis. Aims. We aim to develop a spectroscopic fitting program for white dwarf binary systems based on photometry, LRS, and stellar evolutionary models. The outputs include stellar parameters of both companions in the binary including effective temperature, surface gravity, mass, radius, and metallicity in the case of MS stars. Methods. We used an artificial neural network (ANN) to build spectrum generators for DA/DB white dwarfs and main-sequence stars. Characteristic spectral lines were used to decompose the spectrum of each component. The best-fit stellar parameters were obtained by finding the least χ2 solution to these feature lines and the continuum simultaneously. Compared to previous studies, our code is innovative in the following aspects: (1) implementing a sophisticated binary decomposition technique in LRS for the first time; (2) using flux-calibrated spectra instead of photometry plus spectral lines, in which the latter requires multi-epoch observations; (3) applying an ANN in binary decomposition, which significantly improves the efficiency and accuracy of generated spectra. Results. We demonstrate the reliability of our code with two well-studied CWDBs, WD 1534+503 and PG 1224+309. We also estimate the stellar parameters of 14 newly identified CWDB candidates, most of which are fitted with double component models for the first time. Our estimates agree with previous results for the common stars and follow the statistical distribution in the literature. Conclusions. We provide a robust program for fitting binary spectra of various resolutions. Its application to a large volume of white dwarf binary candidates will offer important statistic samples to stellar evolution studies and future gravitational wave monitoring. Nitrogen is produced by CNO-cycling in massive stars, and can be ejected in significant amounts in supernova explosions. While in H-rich SNe, its [N  ii ] 6548, 6583 emission becomes obscured by strong H |$\alpha$|⁠ , in explosions of He stars, this nitrogen emission becomes more visible. We here explore the formation of this line, using the sumo code to compute spectra for a grid of 1D models with parametrized mixing informed from new 2D simulations. Because the mass fraction of nitrogen in the ejecta decreases with larger He-core masses, as more of the He/N zone gets processed by shell helium burning and is lost to winds, the [N  ii ] luminosity relative to the overall optical flux probes the He-core mass. By comparing to large samples of data, we find that low-mass He cores (⁠|$M_{\rm preSN}\lesssim \ 3\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) are exclusively associated with Type IIb SNe, with the exception of Type Ib SN 2007Y. Seeing no strong nitrogen emission in other Type Ib SNe, the implication is either an origin from low-mass stars with the He/N layer (but not the He/C) layer peeled away, or from higher mass He cores. We also see no clear nitrogen emission in Type Ic SNe. We discuss the diagnostic potential of this new line metric, and also dependencies on mass-loss rate and metallicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The detection of blueshifted absorption lines likely associated with ionized iron K-shell transitions in the X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggests the presence of a highly ionized gas outflowing with mildly relativistic velocities (0.03c–0.6c) named ultra-fast outflow (UFO). Within the SUBWAYS project, we characterized these winds starting from a sample of 22 radio-quiet quasars at an intermediate redshift (0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.4) and compared the results with similar studies in the literature on samples of local Seyfert galaxies (i.e., 42 radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton at z ≤ 0.1) and high redshift radio-quiet quasars (i.e., 14 AGNs observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra at z ≥ 1.4). The scope of our work is a statistical study of UFO parameters and incidence considering the key physical properties of the sources, such as supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, bolometric luminosity, accretion rates, and spectral energy distribution (SED) with the aim of gaining new insights into the UFO launching mechanisms. We find indications that highly luminous AGNs with a steeper X-ray/UV ratio, αox, are more likely to host UFOs. The presence of UFOs is not significantly related to any other AGN property in our sample. These findings suggest that the UFO phenomenon may be transient. Focusing on AGNs with UFOs, other important findings from this work include: (1) faster UFOs have larger ionization parameters and column densities; (2) X-ray radiation plays a more crucial role in driving highly ionized winds compared to UV; (3) the correlation between outflow velocity and luminosity is significantly flatter than what is expected for radiatively driven winds; (4) more massive black holes experience higher wind mass losses, suppressing the accretion of matter onto the black hole; (5) the UFO launching radius is positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the involvement of multiple launching mechanisms, including radiation pressure and magneto-hydrodynamic processes, rather than pointing to a single, universally applicable mechanism. Context. Understanding the physical conditions of circumstellar material around young stars is crucial to star and planet formation studies. In particular, very low-mass stars (M★ < 0.2 M⊙) are interesting sources to characterize as they are known to host a diverse population of rocky planets. Molecular and atomic hydrogen lines can probe the properties of the circumstellar gas. Aims. This work aims to measure the mass accretion rate, the accretion luminosity, and more generally the physical conditions of the warm emitting gas in the inner disk of the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159. We investigate the source mid-infrared spectrum for atomic and molecular hydrogen line emission. Methods. We present the full James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) spectrum of the protoplanetary disk around the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159 from the MINDS GTO program, previously shown to be abundant in hydrocarbon molecules. We analyzed the atomic and molecular hydrogen lines in this source by fitting one or multiple Gaussian profiles. We then built a rotational diagram for the H2 lines to constrain the rotational temperature and column density of the gas. Finally, we compared the observed atomic line fluxes to predictions from two standard emission models. Results. We identify five molecular hydrogen pure rotational lines and 16 atomic hydrogen recombination lines in the 5–20 µm spectral range. The spectrum indicates optically thin emission for both species. We use the molecular hydrogen lines to constrain the mass and temperature of the warm emitting gas. We derive a total gas mass of only 2.3 × 10−5 MJup and a temperature of 635 K for the warm H2 gas component located in the very inner disk (r < 0.033 au), which only accounts for a small fraction of the upper limit for the disk mass from continuum observations (0.2 MJup). The HI (7−6) recombination line is used to measure the mass accretion rate (4.0 × 10−10M⊙ yr−1) and luminosity (3.1 × 10−3L⊙) onto the central source. This line falls close to the HI (11−8) line, however at the spectral resolution of JWST MIRI we managed to measure both separately. Previous studies based on Spitzer have measured the combined flux of both lines to measure accretion rates. HI recombination lines can also be used to derive the physical properties of the gas using atomic recombination models. The model predictions of the atomic line relative intensities constrain the atomic hydrogen density to about 109−1010 cm−3 and temperatures up to 5000 K. Conclusions. The JWST-MIRI MRS observations for the very low-mass star 2MASS-J16053215-1933159 reveal a large number of emission lines, many originating from atomic and molecular hydrogen because we are able to look into the disk warm molecular layer. Their analysis constrains the physical properties of the emitting gas and showcases the potential of JWST to deepen our understanding of the physical and chemical structure of protoplanetary disks. In this study, we use MUSE Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS), along with multiline diagnostics, for the optical identification of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the galaxy NGC 7793. We find in total 238 SNR candidates, 225 of them new identifications, increasing significantly the number of known SNRs in this galaxy. The velocity dispersion of the candidate SNRs was calculated, giving a mean value of |$\rm 27\, km\, s^{-1}$|⁠. We construct the H  |$\rm {\alpha }$|⁠ , [S  ii ], [O  iii ], and [S  ii ]–H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| luminosity functions, and for the first time, the [N  ii ], [N  iI ]–H  |$\rm {\alpha }$|⁠ , [N  ii ]–[S  ii ], [O  iii ]–[S  ii ], and [O  iii ]–[N  ii ] luminosity functions of the candidate SNRs. Shock models, along with the observed multiline information were used, in order to estimate shock velocities. The |$\rm \sim 65{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the SNRs present velocities < 300  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠. There is a clear correlation between shock velocity and [O  iii ]/H  |$\rm {\beta }$| ratio, and a less clear but still evident correlation in the relation between shock velocity and the [S  ii ]/H  |$\rm {\alpha }$|⁠ , [N  ii ]/H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| ratios. We also use the [S  ii ]6716/31 ratio of the SNR candidates to calculate their post-shock density, assuming different temperatures. The median value of the density of our sample is |$\rm \sim 80\, cm^{-3}$|⁠ , for a temperature of |$\rm T = 10^4\, K$|⁠. No correlation between shock velocity and density, or density and SNRs with [S  ii ]/H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| > 0.4 and [S  ii ]/H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| < 0.4 is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) reveal diversity, even within assumed subcategories. Here, the composition of the peculiar iPTF16abc (SN 2016bln) is derived by modelling a time series of optical spectra. iPTF16abc's early spectra combine traits of SNe 1999aa and 1991T known for weak Si  ii λ 6355 and prominent Fe  iii features. However, it differs with weak early Fe  iii lines, and persistent C  ii lines post-peak. It also exhibits a weak Ca  ii H&K feature aligning it with SN 1991T, an observation supported by their bolometric light curves. The early attenuation of Fe  iii results from abundance effect. The weakening of the Si  ii λ 6355 line, stems from silicon depletion in the outer shells, a characteristic shared by both SNe 1999aa and 1991T, indicating a common explosion mechanism that terminates nuclear burning at around 12 000 km s−1 unseen in normal events. Beneath a thin layer of intermediate mass elements (IMEs) with a total mass of 0.18 M⊙, extends a 56Ni rich shell totaling 0.76 M⊙ and generating a bolometric luminosity as high as L peak = 1.60 ± 0.1 × 1043 ergs s−1. Inner layers, typical of SNe Ia, hold neutron-rich elements, (54Fe and 58Ni), totaling 0.20 M⊙. Stable iron, exceeding solar abundance, and carbon, coexist in the outermost layers, challenging existing explosion models. The presence of carbon down to v ≈ 9000 km s−1, totalling ∼0.01 M⊙ unprecedented in this class, links iPTF16abc to SN 2003fg-like events. The retention of 91T-like traits in iPTF16abc underscores its importance in understanding the diversity of SNe Ia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most stars, including the Sun, are born in rich stellar clusters containing massive stars. Therefore, the study of the chemical reservoir of massive star-forming regions is crucial to understand the basic chemical ingredients available at the dawn of planetary systems. We present a detailed study of the molecular inventory of the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 from the project GUAPOS (G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey). We analyse 34 species for the first time plus 20 species analysed in previous GUAPOS works, including oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine species. We compare the abundances derived in G31.41+0.31 with those observed in other chemically-rich sources that represent the initial and last stages of the formation of stars and planets: the hot corino in the Solar-like protostar IRAS 16293-2422 B, and the comets 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and 46P/Wirtanen. The comparative analysis reveals that the chemical feedstock of the two star-forming regions are similar. The abundances of oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules exhibit a good correlation for all pair of sources, including the two comets, suggesting a chemical heritage of these species during the process of star formation, and hence an early phase formation of the molecules. However, sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species present worse correlations, being more abundant in comets. This suggests that while sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species are pre-dominantly trapped on the surface of icy grains in the hot close surroundings of protostars, they could be more easily released into gas phase in comets, allowing their cosmic abundances to be almost recovered. Aims. Our goal is to accurately determine bound-to-bound transition wavelengths and energy levels of the low-lying open-shell configurations 4f4, 4f3 5d, 4f36s, and 4f3 6p of doubly ionised neodymium (Nd III) through high-resolution spectroscopy and semi-empirical calculations. Methods. The emission spectra of neodymium (Nd, Z = 60) were recorded using Penning and hollow cathode discharge lamps in the region 11 500-54000 cm−1 (8695–1852 Å) by Fourier transform spectroscopy at resolving powers up to 106. Wavenumber measurements were accurate to a few 10−3 cm−1. Grating spectroscopy of Nd vacuum sliding sparks and stellar spectra were used to aid line and energy level identification. For the analysis, new Nd III atomic structure and transition probability calculations were carried out using the Cowan code parameterised by newly established levels. Results. The classification of 432 transitions of Nd III from the Penning lamp spectra resulted in the determination of 144 energy levels of the 4f4, 4f3 5d, 4f3 6s, and 4f3 6p configurations of Nd III, 105 of which were experimentally established for the first time. Of the 40 previously published Nd III levels, one was revised and 39 were confirmed. Conclusions. The results will not only benchmark and improve future semi-empirical atomic structure calculations of Nd III, but also enable more reliable astrophysical applications of Nd III, such as abundance analyses of kilonovae and chemically peculiar stars, and studies of pulsational wave propagation in these stars. Binary neutron star mergers are the first confirmed site of element nucleosynthesis by the rapid neutron-capture process (r -process). The kilonova AT2017gfo is the only electromagnetic counterpart of a neutron star merger spectroscopically observed. We analyse the entire spectral sequence of AT2017gfo (from merger to +10.4 d) and identify seven emission-like features. We confirm that the prominent 1.08  |$\mu{\text{m}}$| feature can be explained by the Sr  ii near-infrared triplet evolving from a P-Cygni profile through to pure emission. We calculate the expected strength of the [Sr  ii ] doublet and show that its absence requires highly clumped ejecta. Near-infrared features at 1.58 and 2.07  |$\mu {\text{m}}$| emerge after three days and become more prominent as the spectra evolve. We model these as optically thick P-Cygni profiles and alternatively as pure emission features (with FWHM ≃ 35 600 ± 6600 km s−1) and favour the latter interpretation. The profile of the strong 2.07  |$\mu {\text{m}}$| emission feature is best reproduced with two lines, centred at 2.059 and 2.135  |$\mu {\text{m}}$|⁠. We search for candidate ions for all prominent features in the spectra. Strong, permitted transitions of La  iii , Ce  iii , Gd  iii , Ra  ii , and Ac  i are plausible candidates for the emission features. If any of these features are produced by intrinsically weak, forbidden transitions, we highlight candidate ions spanning the three r -process peaks. The second r -process peak elements Te and I have plausible matches to multiple features. We highlight the need for more detailed and quantitative atomic line transition data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Main-sequence K-dwarfs possess strong emission in the form of the H  i Ly α line. There is a close coincidence between the energy corresponding to the transitions H  i 1s-2p and Fe  ii (5D)5s 4D5/2–(5D)5p 4D5/2. Singly ionized iron has been confirmed being pumped by photo-excitation by accidental resonance (PAR) in planetary nebulae, symbiotic stars, K-giants, and active galactic nebulae. I investigate in this work whether PAR can occur in the atmospheres of main-sequence K-dwarfs, which do not possess the large extended atmospheres of the late-type K-giants. Specifically a search for possible Fe  ii fluorescence lines is conducted. For the case when I can confirm PAR, I estimate the total flux leaving the stars in the form of Fe  ii fluorescence. I search for emission lines from the Fe  ii (5D)5p 4D5/2 level. Since those of these lines with the largest branching fractions correspond to lines at wavelengths covered by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite, a search for archival FUSE spectra from K-dwarfs within 20 ly from the sun is conducted. I retrieve and analyse FUSE spectra for four of these K-dwarfs. In each case I can confirm PAR, I fit the H  i Ly α line in Hubble Space Telescope spectra recorded with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, in order to estimate the efficiency of the PAR mechanism. I can now confirm Fe  ii fluorescence in the two closest K-dwarfs, Alpha Centauri B, and Epsilon Eridani. The total power leaving as Fe  ii fluorescence are 4.9 × 1017 and 1.30 × 1018 W respectively. Atomic data are fundamental for plasma diagnostics in laboratory and astrophysics through spectroscopy. These data are extensively present in data bases for light elements, however incomplete for high-mass atoms. This paper presents the results of systematic spectroscopy of 17 elements with high Z , expected to be produced in kilonova events generated by neutron star mergers, whose spectral lines are not yet fully identified in stellar spectra and fusion devices. Experimental data are from échelle high-resolution (λ/Δλ = 60 000) spectroscopy of hollow cathode lamps obtained with the Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter covering the 3700–10 000 Å range in a single exposure. A total of about 7700 spectral lines with energy level classification not previously listed in the NIST, Kurucz, and VALD data bases are here reported for neutral and singly ionized atomic transitions. For the spectral lines of any species, we report the measured wavelengths and their relative intensities. If possible, we also estimate the transition probabilities under the assumptions of optically thin emission and electric-dipole transitions. We present the first detection of HCNS (thiofulminic acid) in space with the QUIJOTE line survey in the direction of TMC-1. We performed a complete study of the isomers of CHNS and CHNO, including NCO and NCS. The derived column densities for HCNS, HNCS, and HSCN are (9.0 ± 0.5) × 109, (3.2 ± 0.1) × 1011, and (8.3 ± 0.4) × 1011 cm−2, respectively. The HNCS/HSCN abundance ratio is 0.38. The abundance ratios HNCO/HNCS, HCNO/HCNS, HOCN/HSCN, and NCO/NCS are 34 ± 4, 8.3 ± 0.7, 0.18 ± 0.03, and 0.78 ± 0.07, respectively. These ratios cannot be correctly reproduced by our gas-phase chemical models, which suggests that formation paths for these species are missing, and/or that the adopted dissociative recombination rates for their protonated precursors have to be revised. The isotopologues H15NCO, DNCO, HN13CO, DCNO, H34SCN, and DSCN have also been detected with the ultrasensitive QUIJOTE line survey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the detection of the three 13C isotopologs of HCCNC and HNCCC toward TMC-1 using the QUIJOTE line survey. In addition, the D species has also been detected for these two isomers of HCCCN, whereas the 15N isotopolog was only detected for HCCNC. Using high-J lines of HCCNC and HNCCC, we were able to derive very precise rotational temperatures, column densities, and subsequently the isotopic abundance ratios. We found that 12C/13C is ∼90 for the three possible substitutions in both isomers. These results are slightly different from what has been found for the most abundant isomer HCCCN, for which abundances of 105, 95, and 66 were found for each one of the three possible positions of 13C. The H/D abundance ratio was found to be 31 ± 4 for HCCNC and of 53 ± 6 for HNCCC. The latter is similar to the H/D abundance ratio derived for HCCCN (∼59). We present the results of the investigation of the nova V1674 Her (2021), recognized as the swiftest classical nova, with t 2 ∼ 0.90 d. The distance to the nova is estimated to be 4.97 kpc. The mass and radius of the WD are calculated to be ∼1.36 M⊙ and ∼0.15  R ⊕, respectively. Over the course of 1 month following the outburst, V1674 Her traversed distinct phases – pre-maxima, early decline, nebular, and coronal – displaying a remarkably swift transformation. The nebular lines emerged on day 10 making it the classical nova with the earliest observed commencement to date. We modelled the observed optical spectrum using the photoionization code cloudy. From the best-fitting model we deduced different physical and chemical parameters associated with the system. The temperature and luminosity of the central ionizing sources are found in the range of 1.99–2.34 × 105 K and 1.26–3.16 × 1038  erg s−1, respectively. Elements such as He , O , N , and Ne  are found to be overabundant compared to solar abundance in both the nebular and coronal phases. According to the model, Fe  ii abundance diminishes while Ne abundance increases, potentially elucidating the rare hybrid transition between Fe and He/N nova classes. The ejected mass across all epochs spanned from 3.42 to 7.04 × 10−5 M⊙. Morpho-kinematic modelling utilizing shape revealed that the nova V1674 Her possesses a bipolar structure with an equatorial ring at the centre and an inclination angle of i = 67 ± 1.5°. Interloper contamination due to line misidentification is an important issue in the future low-resolution spectroscopic surveys. We realize that the algorithm previously used for photometric redshift self-calibration, with minor modifications, can be particularly applicable to calibrate the interloper bias. In order to explore the robustness of the modified self-calibration algorithm, we construct the mock catalogues based on China Space Station Telescope (CSST), taking two main target emission lines, Hα and [O  iii ]. The self-calibration algorithm is tested in cases with different interloper fractions at 1 per cent, 5 per cent, and 10 per cent. We find that the interloper fraction and mean redshift in each redshift bin can be successfully reconstructed at the level of ∼ 0.002 and ∼ 0.001(1 + z), respectively. We also find the impact of the cosmic magnification can be significant, which is usually ignored in previous works, and therefore propose a convenient and efficient method to eliminate it. For near‐infrared ground and space‐based astronomy, compact photonic devices can replace the large bulk optical components in spectrographs, frequency combs, beam combiners, and sky subtraction filters, thus saving cost, reducing volume, weight, and power requirements. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs), analogous to integrated circuits (IC) in electronics, are particularly powerful to address innovative miniaturized solutions. Here, we demonstrate two new instrument prototypes: the Potsdam Arrayed Waveguide Spectrograph (PAWS) built around an array waveguide grating (AWG) PIC and Hawaii2RG detector, and the Potsdam Comb (POCO), a frequency comb generated by nonlinear processes in a micro‐ring resonator photonic chip. PAWS is calibrated by the remotely located POCO via the fiber optic communication network of the Leibniz‐Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP). The vision of future astrophotonic solutions for instrumentation is pointing toward hybrid solutions of PIC and detector arrays that hold the promise to dramatically change the layout of telescope focal plane instrumentation. The main isotopologue of 2-hydroxyacetonitrile (glycolonitrile; HOCH2CN) has recently been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). To date, no rotational spectroscopy of 2-hydroxyacetonitrile 13C-isotopologues studies has been carried out and only few centimetre-wave measurements of one deuterated isotopologue (DOCH2CN) exist. The rotational spectrum of the 2-hydroxyacetonitrile 13C-isotopologues and DOCH2CN was investigated from 150 to 530 GHz. As the parent isotopic species, the other 2-hydroxyacetonitrile isotopologues exhibit large amplitude motion due to the torsion of the hydroxyl group. The analyses of the spectra were carried out using the reduced axis system (RAS) formalism and Watson's S-reduction Hamiltonian implemented in the spfit code. More than 3000 lines were fitted for the three studied isotopologues, with quantum number values reaching 60–67 for J and 21–25 for K a depending on the species. Accurate line lists up to 600 GHz and partition functions are provided. A search for these isotopologues in SMM1-a and IRAS 16293 B surveys resulted in non-detections; upper limits to the column density were determined. The accurate spectroscopic prediction of their spectra provided in this work will allow astronomers to continue the search for 2-hydroxyacetonitrile isotopologues in the ISM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the detection of large hydrocarbon cycles toward several cold dense clouds. We observed four sources (L1495B, Lupus-1A, L483, and L1527) in the Q band (31−50 GHz) using the Yebes 40 m radiotelescope. Using the line stack technique, we find statistically significant evidence of benzonitrile (C6H5CN) in L1495B, Lupus-1A, and L483 at levels of 31.8σ, 15.0σ, and 17.2σ, respectively, while there is no hint of C6H5CN in the fourth source, L1527. The column densities derived are in the range (1.7−3.8) × 1011 cm−2, which is somewhat below the value derived toward the cold dense cloud TMC-1. When we simultaneously analyze all the benzonitrile abundances derived toward cold clouds in this study and in the literature, a clear trend emerges in that the higher the abundance of HC7N, the more abundant C6H5CN is. This indicates that aromatic cycles are especially favored in those interstellar clouds where long carbon chains are abundant, which suggests that the chemical processes that are responsible for the formation of linear carbon chains are also behind the synthesis of aromatic rings. We also searched for cycles other than benzonitrile, and found evidence of indene (C9H8), cyclopentadiene (C5H6), and 1-cyano cyclopentadiene (1-C5H5CN) at levels of 9.3σ, 7.5σ, and 8.4σ, respectively, toward L1495B, which shows the strongest signal from C6H5CN. The relative abundances between the various cycles detected in L1495B are consistent – within a factor of three – with those previously found in TMC-1. It is therefore likely that not only C6H5CN but also other large aromatic cycles are abundant in clouds rich in carbon chains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new observations of molecular anions with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes toward the cold, dense clouds TMC-1 CP, Lupus-1A, L1527, L483, L1495B, and L1544. We report the first detections of C3N− and C5N− in Lupus-1A as well as C4H− and C6H− in L483. In addition, we detected new lines of C6H− toward the six targeted sources, of C4H− toward TMC-1 CP, Lupus-1A, and L1527, and of C8H− and C3N− in TMC-1 CP. Excitation calculations using recently computed collision rate coefficients indicate that the lines of anions accessible to radiotelescopes run from subthermally excited to thermalized as the size of the anion increases, with the degree of departure from thermalization depending on the H2 volume density and the line frequency. We noticed that the collision rate coefficients available for the radical C6H are not sufficient to explain various observational facts, thereby calling for the collision data for this species to be revisited. The observations presented here, together with observational data from the literature, have been used to model the excitation of interstellar anions and to constrain their abundances. In general, the anion-to-neutral ratios derived here agree with the literature values, when available, within 50% (by a factor of two at most), except for the C4H−/C4H ratio, which shows higher differences due to a revision of the dipole moment of C4H. From the set of anion-to-neutral abundance ratios derived two conclusions can be drawn. First, the C6H−/C6H ratio shows a tentative trend whereby it increases with increasing H2 density, as we would expect on the basis of theoretical grounds. Second, the assertion that the higher the molecular size, the higher the anion-to-neutral ratio is incontestable; furthermore, this supports a formation mechanism based on radiative electron attachment. Nonetheless, the calculated rate coefficients for electron attachment to the medium size species C4H and C3N are probably too high and too low, respectively, by more than one order of magnitude. Context. Methylamine (CH3NH2) was first detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) toward Sgr B2 almost 50 years ago by observation of rotational transitions in its torsional ground state. Methylamine exhibits two large-amplitude motions (LAMs), the methyl torsion and amine wagging, which complicate the spectral analysis, especially in excited vibration states. The lack of an accurate model of the two coupled LAMs has also hampered the identification in the ISM of rotational transitions in excited vibrational states. Aims. The aim of this work is to study the terahertz and microwave rotational spectra of methylamine experimentally and theoretically in order to provide a reliable basis for the detection of its rotational transitions in the first torsionally excited state, υt = 1, in the ISM. Methods. The terahertz spectrum of methylamine was measured from 150 to 1520 GHz with the Lille fast scan spectrometer. Using a new "hybrid" Hamiltonian model, we were able to analyze the nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure and to accurately fit the rotational spectrum of the υt = 1 state of methylamine. We used the imaging spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to search for rotational transitions of methylamine in its first torsionally excited state toward the high-mass star forming region Sgr B2(N). The observed spectra are modeled under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). Results. Accurate spectral predictions were obtained for the ground and first excited states of CH3NH2. We report the first interstellar detection of methylamine in the υt = 1 state toward the offset position Sgr B2(N1S) in the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N1). The LTE parameters derived previously from the rotational emission of methylamine in its torsional ground state toward Sgr B2(N1S) yield synthetic spectra of methylamine in the υt = 1 state that are fully consistent with the ALMA spectra and allow us to identify five rotational lines of this state. The recent discovery of the C7N− anion and the relatively large abundance of the HC9N member of the cyanopolyyne family opens the door for searching in the data for harmonically related series of lines belonging to singlet species, with intensities close to the detection limit, that could belong to heavier anions. One such series has been found with rotational quantum numbers from J = 52 − 51 up to J = 74 − 73, with at least 15 distinguishable features clearly detected as isolated or partly blended. There are two main candidates for the carriers of the series: C9N− and/or C10H−, for which our high-level-of-theory ab initio calculations predict a quite compatible rotational constant of ~300 MHz. In this paper we discuss, based on our ab initio calculations and also on chemical models, which of these two candidates is the most likely carrier. There is more evidence for the C10H− candidate. Context. The G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey (GUAPOS) project targets the hot molecular core (HMC) G31.41+0.31 (G31) to reveal the complex chemistry of one of the most chemically rich high-mass star-forming regions outside the Galactic center (GC). Aims. In the third paper of the project we present a study of nine O-bearing (CH3OH, 13CH3OH, CH318OH , CH3CHO, CH3OCH3, CH3COCH3, C2H5OH, aGg′-(CH2OH)2, and gGg′-(CH2OH)2) and six N-bearing (CH3CN,13CH3CN, CH313CN, C2H3CN, C2H5CN, and C2H513CN) complex organic molecules toward G31. The aim of this work is to characterize the abundances in G31 and to compare them with the values estimated in other sources. Moreover, we searched for a possible chemical segregation between O-bearing and N-bearing species in G31, which hosts four compact sources as seen with higher angular resolution data. In the discussion we also include the three isomers of C2H4O2 and the O- and N-bearing molecular species NH2CHO, CH3NCO, CH3C(O)CH2, and CH3NHCHO, which were analyzed in previous GUAPOS papers. Methods. Observations were carried out with the interferometer ALMA and cover the entire Band 3 from 84 to 116 GHz (~32 GHz bandwidth) with an angular resolution of 1.2″ × 1.2″ (~4400 au × 4400 au) and a spectral resolution of ~0.488 MHz (~1.3–1.7 km s−1). The transitions of the 14 molecular species were analyzed with the tool SLIM of MADCUBA to determine the physical parameters of the emitting gas. Moreover, we analyzed the morphology of the emission of the molecular species. Results. The values of abundances with respect to H2 in G31 range from 10−6 to 10−10 for the different species. We compared the abundances with respect to methanol of O-bearing, N-bearing, and O- and N-bearing COMs in G31 with 27 other sources, including other hot molecular cores inside and outside the GC, hot corinos, shocked regions, envelopes around young stellar objects, and quiescent molecular clouds, and with chemical models. Conclusions. From the comparison with other sources there is not a unique template for the abundances in hot molecular cores, pointing toward the importance of the thermal history for the chemistry of the various sources. The abundances derived from the chemical models are in good agreement, within a factor of 10, with those of G31. From the analysis of the maps we derived the peak positions of all the molecular species toward G31. Different species peak at slightly different positions, and this, together with the different central velocities of the lines obtained from the spectral fitting, point to chemical differentiation of selected O-bearing species. The H2NC radical is the high-energy metastable isomer of H2CN radical, which has been recently detected for the first time in the interstellar medium towards a handful of cold galactic sources, besides a warm galaxy in front of the PKS 1830−211 quasar. These detections have shown that the H2CN/H2NC isomeric ratio, likewise the HCN/HNC ratio, might increase with the kinetic temperature (T kin), but the shortage of them in warm sources still prevents us from confirming this hypothesis and shedding light on their chemistry. In this work, we present the first detection of H2CN and H2NC towards a warm galactic source, the G+0.693−0.027 molecular cloud (with T kin > 70 K), using IRAM 30-m telescope observations. We have detected multiple hyperfine components of the |$N_{K_\text{a}K_\text{c}} =$| 101–000 and 202–101 transitions. We derived molecular abundances with respect to H2 of (6.8 ± 1.3) × 10−11 for H2CN and of (3.1 ± 0.7) × 10−11 for H2NC, and an H2CN/H2NC abundance ratio of 2.2 ± 0.5. These detections confirm that the H2CN/H2NC ratio is ≳2 for sources with T kin > 70 K, larger than the ∼1 ratios previously found in colder cores (T kin ∼ 10 K). This isomeric ratio dependence on temperature cannot be fully explained with the currently proposed gas-phase formation and destruction pathways. Grain surface reactions, including the H2NC → H2CN isomerization, deserve consideration to explain the higher isomeric ratios and H2CN abundances observed in warm sources, where the molecules can be desorbed into the gas phase through thermal and/or shock-induced mechanisms. Methylamine has been the only simple alkylamine detected in the interstellar medium for a long time. With the recent secure and tentative detections of vinylamine and ethylamine, respectively, dimethylamine has become a promising target for searches in space. Its rotational spectrum, however, has been known only up to 45 GHz until now. Here we investigate the rotation-tunnelling spectrum of dimethylamine in selected regions between 76 and 1091 GHz using three different spectrometers in order to facilitate its detection in space. The quantum number range is extended to J  = 61 and  Ka  = 21, yielding an extensive set of accurate spectroscopic parameters. To search for dimethylamine, we refer to the spectral line survey ReMoCA carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array towards the high-mass star-forming region Sagittarius B2(N) and a spectral line survey of the molecular cloud G+0.693–0.027 employing the IRAM 30 m and Yebes 40 m radio telescopes. We report non-detections of dimethylamine towards the hot molecular cores Sgr B2(N1S) and Sgr B2(N2b) as well as G+0.693−0.027 which imply that dimethylamine is at least 14, 4.5, and 39 times less abundant than methylamine towards these sources, respectively. The observational results are compared to computational results from a gas-grain astrochemical model. The modelled methylamine to dimethylamine ratios are compatible with the observational lower limits. However, the model produces too much ethylamine compared with methylamine which could mean that the already fairly low levels of dimethylamine in the models may also be too high. A blue depression is found in the spectra of M dwarfs from 4000 to 4500 Å. This depression shows an increase towards lower temperatures, though it is particularly sensitive to gravity and metallicity. It is the single strongest and most sensitive feature in the optical spectra of M dwarfs. The depression appears as centred on the neutral calcium resonance line at 4227 Å and leads to nearby features being weaker by about two orders of magnitude than predicted. We consider a variety of possible causes for the depression, including temperature, gravity, metallicity, dust, damping constants, and atmospheric stratification. We also consider relevant molecular opacities that might be the cause identifying AlH, SiH, and NaH in the spectral region. However, none of these solutions are satisfactory. In the absence of a more accurate determination of the broadening of the calcium line perturbed by molecular hydrogen, we find a promising empirical fit using a modified Lorentzian line profile for the calcium resonance line. Such fits provide a simplistic line-broadening description for this calcium resonance line and potentially other unmodelled resonance lines in cool high-pressure atmospheres. Thus, we claim that the most plausible cause of the blue depression in the optical spectra of M dwarfs is a lack of appropriate treatment of line broadening for atomic calcium. The broad wings of the calcium resonance line develop at temperatures below about 4000 K and are analogous to the neutral sodium and potassium features, which dominate the red optical spectra of L dwarfs. We investigated the nature of protostellar objects in G358.46−0.39 and their gas kinematics using ALMA data, with the aim of understanding the ongoing star formation activities in the region. The dust continuum map reveals multiple cores (MM1a, MM1b, MM1c, and MM2) dominated by MM1a, with no detectable free–free emission. We calculated the masses and the column densities of the various objects (MM1a, MM1b, MM1c, and MM2). A total of 33, 10, 10, and 9 molecular transitions are detected towards MM1a, MM1b, MM1c, and MM2, respectively. The differences in the number of molecular lines detected towards each of the cores support different excitation conditions at different positions. We derived the kinetic temperature ranges of MM1a, MM1b, MM1c, and MM2 to be ∼96–118, 96–114, 72–74, and 80–84 K, respectively. A highly collimated bipolar outflow traced by 12CO emission is observed to be associated with MM1a, with knots along the outflow lobes, which could be an indication of episodic ejection. The C17O emission is observed to be likely tracing a slowly rotating envelope of gas around MM1a. The velocity field map of CH3OH (22, 1 − 31, 2) emission suggests the presence of a rotating structure, possibly a disc. The physical and kinematic properties of MM1a are strong indication of a massive young stellar object, with ongoing outflow activity and accretion in its early stage of formation. From an astrochemical point of view, propynal is a complex organic molecule. Moreover, it is a potential candidate for the formation of prebiotic propanal and propenal. Therefore, this molecule is of particular interest for astrochemical investigations. As it has been detected in the interstellar medium, it is of high relevance in this field of research. Although experimental data are available for the vibrational fundamental bands and rotational constants, experimental data for vibrational overtones and combination bands are scarce and fairly old. Additionally, high-level ab initio calculations are also not reported. In this work, we provide accurate quantum chemical calculations as well as a detailed analysis of vibrational and rovibrational properties for this molecule. The low-frequency spectrum up to |$350\, \,\,\text{cm}^{-1}$| has been studied for temperatures between 10 and |$300\, \text{K}$|⁠. For the same temperature range, partition functions are provided. Furthermore, the impact of hot bands up to room temperature has been investigated. A comparison of our results with experimental data is provided for the rotational constants, geometrical parameters, and a rovibrational spectrum. The underlying potential energy surface within these calculations is based on explicitly correlated coupled-cluster theory and includes up to four-mode coupling terms within an n -mode expansion. We found four series of harmonically related lines in IRC +10216 with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes. The first series corresponds to a molecule with a rotational constant, B, of 1448.5994±0.0013MHz and a distortion constant, D, of 63.45±1.15 Hz and covers upper quantum numbers from Ju = 11 up to 33 (B1449). The second series is fitted with B= 1446.9380±0.0098MHz and D= 91±23 Hz and covers upper quantum numbers from Ju = 11 up to 17 (B1447). The third series is fitted with B= 598.7495±0.0011MHz and D= 6.13±0.43 Hz and covers quantum numbers from Ju = 26 up to 41 (B599). Finally, the frequencies of the last series of lines can be reproduced with B= 594.3176±0.0026MHz and D= 4.92±1.16 Hz (B594). The large values of D point toward four metal-bearing carriers. After exploring all plausible candidates containing Na, Al, Mg, and other metals, our ab initio calculations indicate that the cations MgC4H+, MgC3N+, MgC6H+, and MgC5N+ must be the carriers of B1449, B1447, B599, and B594, respectively. These cations could be formed by the radiative association of Mg+ with C4H, C3N, C6H, and C5N, respectively. We calculated the radiative association rate coeffcient of Mg+ with C4H, C3N, C6H, and C5N and incorporated them in our chemical model. The results confirm that the Mg-bearing cations can be formed through these radiative association reactions in the outer layers of IRC +10216. This is the first time that cationic metal-bearing species have been found in space. These results provide a new paradigm on the reactivity of ionized metals with abundant radicals and open the door for further characterization of similar species in metal-rich astrophysical environments. Context. The identification of the main sulfur reservoir on its way from the diffuse interstellar medium to the cold dense star-forming cores and, ultimately, to protostars is a long-standing problem. Despite sulfur's astrochemical relevance, the abundance of S-bearing molecules in dense cores and regions around protostars is still insufficiently constrained. Aims. The goal of this investigation is to derive the gas-phase H2S/OCS ratio for several low-mass protostars, which could provide crucial information about the physical and chemical conditions in the birth cloud of Sun-like stars. This may also shed new light onto the main sulfur reservoir in low-mass star-forming systems. Methods. Using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Atacama Compact Array (ACA) Band 6 observations, we searched for H2S, OCS, and their isotopologs in ten Class 0/I protostars with different source properties such as age, mass, and environmental conditions. The sample contains IRAS 16293-2422 A, IRAS 16293-2422 B, NGC 1333-IRAS 4A, RCrA IRS7B, Per-B1-c, BHR71-IRS1, Per-emb-25, NGC 1333-IRAS4B, Ser-SMM3, and TMC1. A local thermal equilibrium (LTE) model is used to fit synthetic spectra to the detected lines and to derive the column densities based solely on optically thin lines. Results. The H2S and OCS column densities span four orders of magnitude across the sample. The H2S/OCS ratio is found to be in the range from 0.2 to above 9.7. IRAS 16293-2422 A and Ser-SMM3 have the lowest ratio, while BHR71-IRS1 has the highest. Only the H2S/OCS ratio of BHR71-IRS1 is in agreement with the ratio in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko within the uncertainties. Conclusions. The determined gas-phase H2S/OCS ratios can be below the upper limits on the solid-state ratios by as much as one order of magnitude. The H2S/OCS ratio depends in great measure on the environment of the birth cloud, such as UV-irradiation and heating received prior to the formation of a protostar. The highly isolated birth environment (a Bok globule) of BHR71-IRS1 is hypothesized as the reason for its high gaseous H2S/OCS ratio that is due to lower rates of photoreactions and more efficient hydrogenation reactions under such dark, cold conditions. We report the first detection of radio recombination lines (RRLs) of ions heavier than helium. In a highly sensitive multi-band (12–50 GHz) line survey toward Orion KL with the TianMa 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT), we successfully detected more than fifteen unblended α lines of RRLs of singly ionized species (XII) recombined from XIII. The Ka-band (26–35 GHz) spectrum also shows tentative signals of β lines of ions. The detected lines can be successfully crossmatched with the rest frequencies of RRLs of C II and/or O II. This finding greatly expands the scope of our understanding of ion RRLs, since prior to this work, only two blended lines (105α and 121α) of He II had been reported. Our detected lines can be fitted simultaneously under assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). An abundance of C III and O III of 8.8×10−4 was obtained, avoiding the complexities of optical and infrared observations and the blending of RRLs of atoms. It is consistent with but approaches the upper bound of the value (10−4–10−3) estimated from optical and infrared observations. The effects of dielectronic recombination may contribute to enhancing the level populations even at large n. We expect future observations using radio interferometers could break the degeneracy between C and O, while also helping to reveal the ionization structure and dynamical evolution of various ionized regions. We report the detection of methyl ketene towards TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey. Nineteen rotational transitions with rotational quantum numbers ranging from J = 3 up to J = 5 and Ka ≤ 2 were identified in the frequency range 32.0–50.4 GHz, 11 of which arise above the 3σ level. We derived a column density for CH3CHCO of N = 1.5 × 1011 cm−2 and a rotational temperature of 9 K. Hence, the abundance ratio between ketene and methyl ketene, CH2CO/CH3CHCO, is 93. This species is the second C3H4O isomer detected. The other, trans-propenal (CH2CHCHO), corresponds to the most stable isomer and has a column density of N = (2.2 ± 0.3)×1011 cm−2, which results in an abundance ratio CH2CHCHO/CH3CHCO of 1.5. The next non-detected isomer with the lowest energy is cis-propenal, which is therefore a good candidate for future discovery. We have carried out an in-depth study of the possible gas-phase chemical reactions involving methyl ketene to explain the abundance detected, achieving good agreement between chemical models and observations. Context. The study of the early phases of star and planet formation is important to understand the physical and chemical history of stellar systems such as our own. In particular, protostars born in rich clusters are prototypes of the young Solar System. Aims. In the framework of the Seeds Of Life In Space (SOLIS) large observational project, the aim of the present work is to investigate the origin of the previously inferred high flux of energetic particles in the protocluster FIR4 of the Orion Molecular Cloud 2 (OMC-2), which appears asymmetric within the protocluster itself. Methods. Interferometric observations carried out with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer were used to map the silicon monoxide (SiO) emission around the FIR4 protocluster. Complementary archival data from the ALMA interferometer were also employed to help constrain excitation conditions. A physical-chemical model was implemented to characterise the particle acceleration along the protostellar jet candidate, along with a non-LTE analysis of the SiO emission along the jet. Results. The emission morphology of the SiO rotational transitions hints for the first time at the presence of a collimated jet originating very close to the brightest protostar in the cluster, HOPS-108. Conclusions. The NOEMA observations unveiled a possible jet in the OMC-2 FIR4 protocluster propagating towards a previously measured enhanced cosmic-ray ionisation rate. This suggests that energetic particle acceleration by the jet shock close to the protostar might be at the origin of the enhanced cosmic-ray ionisation rate, as confirmed by modelling the protostellar jet. We report accurate Ritz wavelengths for parity-forbidden [Ni  ii ] transitions, derived from energy levels determined using high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy. Transitions between the 18 lowest Ni  ii energy levels of even-parity produced Ritz wavelengths for 126 parity-forbidden lines. Uncertainties for the Ritz wavelengths derived in this work are up to two orders of magnitude lower than previously published values. Transition probabilities were calculated using the semi-empirical orthogonal operator method, with uncertainties ranging from approximately 1 per cent for strong M1 lines and up to 10 per cent for weak E2 lines. Accurate forbidden line wavelengths and transition probabilities, particularly for lines in the infrared, are important in the analyses of low-density astrophysical plasmas, such as supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, and active galactic nuclei. As a candidate 'super-Chandrasekhar' or 09dc-like Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 2012dn shares many characteristics with other members of this remarkable class of objects but lacks their extraordinary luminosity. Here, we present and discuss the most comprehensive optical data set of this SN to date, comprised of a densely sampled series of early-time spectra obtained within the Nearby Supernova Factory project, plus photometry and spectroscopy obtained at the Very Large Telescope about 1 yr after the explosion. The light curves, colour curves, spectral time series, and ejecta velocities of SN 2012dn are compared with those of other 09dc-like and normal SNe Ia, the overall variety within the class of 09dc-like SNe Ia is discussed, and new criteria for 09dc-likeness are proposed. Particular attention is directed to additional insight that the late-phase data provide. The nebular spectra show forbidden lines of oxygen and calcium, elements that are usually not seen in late-time spectra of SNe Ia, while the ionization state of the emitting iron plasma is low, pointing to low ejecta temperatures and high densities. The optical light curves are characterized by an enhanced fading starting ∼60 d after maximum and very low luminosities in the nebular phase, which is most readily explained by unusually early formation of clumpy dust in the ejecta. Taken together, these effects suggest a strongly perturbed ejecta density profile, which might lend support to the idea that 09dc-like characteristics arise from a brief episode of interaction with a hydrogen-deficient envelope during the first hours or days after the explosion.

We prepared a sample of mono-deuterated oxirane and studied its rotational spectrum in the laboratory between 490 and 1060 GHz in order to improve its spectroscopic parameters and consequently the calculated rest frequencies of its rotational transitions. The updated rest frequencies were employed to detect c -C2H3DO for the first time in the interstellar medium in the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array Protostellar Interferometric Line Survey (PILS) of the Class 0 protostellar system IRAS 16293−2422. Fits of the detected lines using the rotation diagrams yield a temperature of T rot = 103 ± 19 K, which in turn agrees well with 125 K derived for the c -C2H4O main isotopologue previously. The c -C2H3DO to c -C2H4O ratio is found to be ∼0.15 corresponding to a D-to-H ratio of ∼0.036 per H atom, which is slightly higher than the D-to-H ratio of species such as methanol, formaldehyde, and ketene but lower than those of the larger complex organic species such as ethanol, methyl formate, and glycolaldehyde. This may reflect that oxirane is formed fairly early in the evolution of the prestellar cores. The identification of doubly deuterated oxirane isotopomers in the PILS data may be possibly judged by the amount of mono-deuterated oxirane and the observed trend that multiply deuterated isotopologues have higher deuteration rates than their mono-deuterated variants. The recently computed ExoMol line lists for isotopologues of AlH are used to analyse the blue spectrum (4000–4500 Å) of Proxima Cen (M5.5 V). Comparison of the observed and computed spectra enables the identification of a large number of 27AlH lines of the A 1Π –X 1Σ+ band system: The spectral range covering 1-0, 0-0, and 1-1 bands are dominated by clearly resolved AlH lines. We reveal the diffuse nature of transitions close to the dissociation limit which appears in the form of increasingly wider (up to 5 Å) and shallower (up to the continuum confusion limit) AlH line profiles. The predicted wavelengths of AlH diffuse lines are systematically displaced. The effect of broadening by predissociation states on the line profiles is included by increasing the radiative damping rate by up to 5 orders of magnitude. We determine empirical values of damping rates for a number of the clean 0-0 Q-branch transitions by comparing the observed and synthetic stellar spectra. We find excellent agreement between our damping rates and lifetimes available in the literature. A comparison of 27Al1H ExoMol and REALH spectra shows that the observed spectrum is better described by the ExoMol line list. A search for 26Al1H lines in the Proxima Cen spectrum does not reveal any notable features; giving an upper limit of 27Al1H /26Al1H >100. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We observed the Galactic black hole X-ray binary V4641 Sgr with the high resolution transmission gratings on Chandra during the source's 2020 outburst. Over two epochs of Chandra gratings observations, we see numerous highly ionized metal lines, superimposed on a hot, disc-dominated X-ray continuum. The measured inner disc temperatures and luminosities imply an unfeasibly small inner disc radius, such that we suggest that the central engine of V4641 Sgr is obscured, and we are viewing scattered X-rays. We find that the emission lines in the Chandra spectra cannot be constrained by a single photoionized model, instead finding that two separate photoionized model components are required, one to reproduce the iron lines and a second for the other metals. We compare the observed X-ray spectra of V4641 Sgr to optical studies during previous outbursts of the source, suggesting that the lines originate in an accretion disc wind, potentially with a spherical geometry. The abundance distribution in the ejecta of the peculiar slowly declining Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 1999aa is obtained by modelling a time series of optical spectra. Similar to SN 1991T, SN 1999aa was characterized by early-time spectra dominated by Fe  iii features and a weak Si  ii  6355 Å line, but it exhibited a high-velocity Ca  ii  H&K line and morphed into a spectroscopically normal SN Ia earlier. Three explosion models are investigated, yielding comparable fits. The innermost layers are dominated by ∼0.3 M⊙ of neutron-rich stable iron-group elements, mostly stable iron. Above that central region lies a 56Ni-dominated shell, extending to |$v \approx 11\, 000$| – |$12\, 000$| km s−1, with mass ∼0.65 M⊙. These inner layers are therefore similar to those of normal SNe Ia. However, the outer layers exhibit composition peculiarities similar to those of SN 1991T: The intermediate-mass elements shell is very thin, containing only ∼0.2 M⊙, and is sharply separated from an outer oxygen-dominated shell, which includes ∼0.22 M⊙. These results imply that burning suddenly stopped in SN 1999aa. This is a feature SN 1999aa shares with SN 1991T, and explains the peculiarities of both SNe, which are quite similar in nature apart from the different luminosities. The spectroscopic path from normal to SN 1991T-like SNe Ia cannot be explained solely by a temperature sequence. In this paper, we present the results of a spectroscopic campaign devoted to ascertaining the actual nature of a sample of five objects reported as chemically peculiar stars in the Catalogue of Ap, HgMn and Am stars (2009, A&A, 498, 961). Spectroscopic observations were obtained with Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter. For each of the objects, we derive the effective temperature, gravity, rotational and radial velocities, and chemical abundances using the spectral synthesis method. All the targets were found to be SB1 systems. Our abundance analysis led us to classify HD 40788 and HD 187959 as marginal Am stars and HD 202431 as an Am star, and to confirm HD 134793 as an SrEuCr Ap star and, finally, HD 189652 as a normal star. Finally, we confirm that Am stars can possibly be used as an accurate tool to date stellar populations in galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The kilonova (KN) associated with the binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 is the only known electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source. Here we produce a sequence of radiative transfer models (using tardis) with updated atomic data, and compare them to accurately calibrated spectra. We use element compositions from nuclear network calculations based on a realistic hydrodynamical simulation of a BNS merger. We show that the blue spectrum at +1.4 d after merger requires a nucleosynthetic trajectory with a high electron fraction. Our best-fitting model is composed entirely of first r -process peak elements (Sr and Zr) and the strong absorption feature is reproduced well by Sr  ii absorption. At this epoch, we set an upper limit on the lanthanide mass fraction of |$X_{{\small LN}} \lesssim 5 \times 10^{-3}$|⁠. In contrast, all subsequent spectra from +2.4 to 6.4 d require the presence of a modest amount of lanthanide material (⁠|$X_{{\small LN}} \simeq 0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.02}$|⁠), produced by a trajectory with Y e = 0.29. This produces lanthanide-induced line blanketing below 6000 Å, and sufficient light r -process elements to explain the persistent strong feature at ∼0.7–1.0  |$\mu$| m (Sr  ii). The composition gives good matches to the observed data, indicating that the strong blue flux deficit results in the near-infrared (NIR) excess. The disjoint in composition between the first epoch and all others indicates either ejecta stratification, or the presence of two distinct components of material. This further supports the 'two-component' KN model, and constrains the element composition from nucleosynthetic trajectories. The formation of hydrides by gas-phase reactions between H2 and a heavy element atom is a very selective process. Reactions with ground-state neutral carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms are very endoergic and have high energy barriers because the H2 molecule has to be fragmented before a hydride bond is formed. In cold interstellar clouds, these barriers exclude the formation of CH, OH, NH, and SH radicals through hydrogen abstraction reactions. Here we study a very energetically unfavorable process, the reaction of N(4S) atoms with H2 molecules. We calculated the reaction rate coefficient for H2 in different vibrational levels, using quantum methods for v = 0−7 and quasi-classical methods up to v =12; for comparison purposes, we also calculated the rate coefficients of the analogous reaction S (3P)+ H2(v) → SH + H. Owing to the high energy barrier, these rate coefficients increase with v and also with the gas temperature. We implemented the new rates in the Meudon photodissociation region (PDR) code and studied their effect on models with different ultraviolet (UV) illumination conditions. In strongly UV-irradiated dense gas (Orion Bar conditions), the presence of H2 in highly vibrationally excited levels (v ≥ 7) enhances the NH abundance by two orders of magnitude (at the PDR surface) compared to models that use the thermal rate coefficient for reaction N(4S) + H2 → NH + H. The increase in NH column density, N(NH), across the PDR is a factor of ~25. We investigate the excitation and detectability of submillimeter NH rotational emission lines. Being a hydride, NH excitation is very subthermal (Trot ≪ Tk) even in warm and dense gas. We explore existing Herschel/HIFI observations of the Orion Bar and Horsehead PDRs. We report a 3σ emission feature at the ~974 GHz frequency of the NH NJ = 12 − 01 line toward the Bar. The emission level implies N(NH) ≃ 1013 cm−2, which is consistent with PDR models using the new rate coefficients for reactions between N and UV-pumped H2. This formation route dominates over hydrogenation reactions involving the less abundant N+ ion.
