The concepts of various kinds of asymptotically Toeplitz operators have been originally defined and studied for the Hardy–Hilbert space. The aim of this article is to extend these definitions to the case of operators acting on Banach spaces of holomorphic functions, including Hardy spaces, Hardy–Lorentz spaces, and Hardy–Orlicz spaces. We give a function-theoretic characterization of uniformly asymptotically Toeplitzness and mean weakly asymptotically Toeplitzness for weighted composition operators. We also investigate strong and weak asymptotic Toeplitzness of weighted composition operators.

Tiivistelmä. Ihmisiä altistuu työssään kvartsipölylle jatkuvasti. Altistus voi aiheuttaa erilaisia terveyshaittoja, kuten silikoosia ja keuhkosyöpää. Työssä mitattiin pölynäytteiden kvartsipitoisuuksia Fourier’n muunnosinfrapunaspektroskopiaa (FTIR) apuna käyttäen ja verrattiin tuloksia työterveyslaitoksen laboratorion tuloksiin. Mittausjärjestelmä kalibroitiin tekemällä standarikvartsista pellettejä eri kvartsipitoisuuksilla ja muodostamalla kalibraatiosuora spektrin piikkien korkeuksien muodostaessa toisen suoran akselin. Työssä käytettiin NIOSH standardia 7602 SILICA, CRYSTALLINE by IR, siltä osin kuin oli mahdollista. Työssä jouduttiin poikkeamaan standardista jonkun verran. Esimerkiksi standardinmukaista kvartsia ei ollut kalibraatioon, joten jouduttiin tyytymään eri kvartsiin, BCR-066. Tästä työn tarkkuuteen johtavat haitat minimoitiin sarjalaimennosmenetelmällä. Työssä käytiin myös läpi Fourier’n muunnosinfrapunaspektroskopiaa hyödyntänyt tutkimus, jonka valossa mikrosilikaa voisi hyötykäyttää uudelleen betonirakentamisessa kehittyvien kansakuntien hyödyksi. Työssä käytiin läpi myös teoriaa Fourier’n muunnosinfrapunaspektroskopiasta. Työ tehtiin yhteistyössä Envimetria Oy:n ja Itä-Suomen yliopiston SibLabsin kanssa.

Eucalyptus dunnii is cultivated in Uruguay for kraft pulping purposes. However, depending on the growth site, the kraft pulping properties of the wood vary highly, and in some cases, pulping is difficult. Different batches of wood were chemically characterized and the only significant difference related to the pulping properties was the calcium content. The calcium appears to at least partly be present in the form of crystals in the lumen. Kraft pulping experiments on wood with different calcium contents indicated that high calcium led to slower delignification, and higher yield losses. Vimentin has been implicated in wound healing, inflammation, and cancer, but its functional contribution to intestinal diseases is poorly understood. To study how vimentin is involved during tissue injury and repair of simple epithelium, we induced colonic epithelial cell damage in the vimentin null (Vim−/−) mouse model. Vim−/− mice challenged with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) had worse colitis manifestations than wild-type (WT) mice. Vim−/− colons also produced more reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, possibly contributing to the pathogenesis of gut inflammation and tumorigenesis than in WT mice. We subsequently describe that CD11b+ macrophages served as the mainly cellular source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production via vimentin-ROS-pSTAT3–interleukin-6 inflammatory pathways. Further, we demonstrated that Vim−/− mice did not develop colitis-associated cancer model upon DSS treatment spontaneously but increased tumor numbers and size in the distal colon in the azoxymethane/DSS model comparing with WT mice. Thus, vimentin has a crucial role in protection from colitis induction and tumorigenesis of the colon.
