Objectives To use improved situation awareness to decrease cardiopulmonary resuscitation events by 25% over 18 months and demonstrate process and outcome sustainability. Design Structured quality improvement initiative. Setting Single-center, 35-bed quaternary-care PICU. Patients All patients admitted to the PICU from February 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020. Interventions Interventions targeted situation awareness and included bid safety huddles, bedside mitigation signs and huddles, smaller pod-based huddles, and an automated clinical decision support tool to identify high-risk patients. Measurements and main results The primary outcome metric, cardiopulmonary resuscitation event rate per 1,000 patient-days, decreased from a baseline of 3.1-1.5 cardiopulmonary resuscitation events per 1,000 patient-days or by 52%. The secondary outcome metric, mortality rate, decreased from a baseline of 6.6 deaths per 1,000 patient-days to 3.6 deaths per 1,000 patient-days. Process metrics included percent of clinical deterioration events predicted, which increased from 40% to 67%, and percent of high-risk patients with shared situation awareness, which increased from 43% to 71%. Balancing metrics included time spent in daily safety huddle, median 0.4 minutes per patient (interquartile range, 0.3-0.5), and a number needed to alert of 16 (95% CI, 14-25). Neither unit acuity as measured by Pediatric Risk of Mortality III scores nor the percent of deaths in patients with do-not-attempt resuscitation orders or electing withdrawal of life-sustaining technologies changed over time. Conclusions Interprofessional teams using shared situation awareness may reduce cardiopulmonary resuscitation events and, thereby, improve outcomes.

This chapter considers what ‘Levantine remains’ yield for post-millennial Palestine, particularly in the context of a seemingly moribund ‘two-state solution.’ It takes up the regional optic of a multi-generational extended-family narrative in Edward Said’s Out of Place: A Memoir (1999), his sister Jean Said Makdisi’s Teta, Mother and Me: An Arab Woman’s Memoir (2005), and his mother-in-law Wadad Makdisi Cortas’ A World I Loved: The Story of an Arab Woman (2009). The chapter contends that the Said-Makdisi-Cortas family collectively summon, through memoirs and paratexts, a ‘lost’ or otherwise ‘forgotten’ Levantine world. In archiving ways in which historically-produced ‘facts on the ground’ have etiolated Levantine identities, these authors resuscitate embedded, expansive models of being Palestinian.

The microbial communities that live in symbiosis with the mucosal surfaces of animals provide the host with defense strategies against pathogens. These microbial communities are largely shaped by the environment and the host genetics. Triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are being considered for aquaculture as they are reproductively sterile and thus cannot contaminate the natural gene pool. It has not been previously investigated how the microbiome of triploid salmon compares to that of their diploid counterparts. In this study, we compare the steady-state skin and gill microbiome of both diploid and triploid salmon, and determine the effects of salmonid alphavirus 3 experimental infection on their microbial composition. Our results show limited differences in the skin-associated microbiome between triploid and diploid salmon, irrespective of infection. In the gills, we observed a high incidence of the bacterial pathogen Candidatus Branchiomonas, with higher abundance in diploid compared to triploid control fish. Diploid salmon infected with SAV3 showed greater histopathological signs of epitheliocystis compared to controls, a phenomenon not observed in triploid fish. Our results indicate that ploidy can affect the alpha diversity of the gills but not the skin-associated microbial community. Importantly, during a natural outbreak of Branchiomonas sp. the gill microbiome of diploid Atlantic salmon became significantly more dominated by this pathogen than in triploid animals. Thus, our results suggest that ploidy may play a role on Atlantic salmon gill health and provide insights into co-infection with SAV3 and C. Branchiomonas in Atlantic salmon.

This article addresses a blind spot in Brexit literary criticism: Britain’s relationship to the Middle East, particularly its historic responsibility for the plight of Palestinians. Although fiction that directly engages both Brexit and the Israeli–Palestinian crisis has not yet appeared, oblique connections can be illuminated. Shared conceptual fields, albeit ones only partially brought into view in contemporary British fiction, emerge from intersecting historical experiences. The article considers a range of recent literary texts, with an emphasis on A Stranger City (2019) by British Jewish author Linda Grant and Fractured Destinies: A Novel (2018) by British Palestinian author Raba’i al-Madhoun. When viewed in a certain light, Brexit motifs of enclosure, displacement, and propinquity limn the Palestinian crisis as well as the spectre of anti-Semitism, revealing Britain’s role in the shaping of the modern Middle East as part of contemporary British literature’s political unconscious.

Disease outbreaks in fish aquaculture are often of concern due to the possibility of pathogen transmission to fish in neighbouring farms and to wild fish populations. To be able to assess the risk and manage transmission and outbreak scenarios, it is of great importance to understand the impact of various biological and physical conditions affecting the survival of the pathogen in the environment. In this study, we examined the effect of temperature on the viability of salmonid alphavirus subtype 3 (SAV3) in three separate experiments using SAV3 in culture medium, SAV3 in seawater or SAV3 shed by infected fish mimicking the virus produced at marine sites during outbreaks. SAV cultured on CHH-1 cells and cultured SAV mixed with seawater were incubated at different temperatures over a period of 4 weeks and 2 weeks, respectively. The surviving virus was quantified by two in vitro methods, RT-qPCR and a 50% tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) assay. In addition, seawater containing SAV shed by Atlantic salmon post-smolts was incubated at different temperatures over 4 weeks. The viability of SAV shed by SAV-infected fish was examined both by in vitro methods and assayed in vivo using recently seawater-transferred post-smolts. The survival of SAV decreased with increasing temperature in all three experiments. Generally, the titre of SAV propagated in cell culture was more stable in culture medium compared to SAV diluted in seawater or shed by infected fish. Cells could be infected with a low titre of SAV, 24 TCID50 L−1 of seawater, whereas a SAV concentration above 448 TCID50 L−1 of seawater was required for successful SAV transmission to the post-smolts in the in vivo assay. SAV3 shed by infected fish at a starting titre of 882 TCID50 L−1 of seawater was completely inactivated after three and four weeks of incubation at 16 °C and 12 °C, respectively, as analysed by the TCID50 in vitro assay. In addition, the TCID50 resulted in a higher sensitivity than RT-qPCR, especially at very low virus titres, probably due to the multiplication of the virus in cells and the possibility of analysing a greater volume of sample in the assay compared to RT-qPCR. The information acquired in the present study may be incorporated into pathogen dispersal models in order to aid understanding and management of SAV outbreaks. Calculation of the risk of transmission would provide new prospects for the control of pancreas disease.

This article compares two creative continuations to the 2011–13 Egyptian uprisings: Basma Abdel Aziz's dystopian novel The Queue (Melville House, 2016; al-Tābour, 2013) and Omar Robert Hamilton's semi-autobiographical fiction The City Always Wins (Faber & Faber, 2017). These two novels, written in the bitter aftermath of Egypt's spectacular twenty-first century revolts, share a morbid tonality and concomitantly sceptical outlook toward representation, despite their different generic affiliations. They nevertheless both gamble on the performative potential of creative fiction. In the context of an ostensibly failed revolution, we need to ask what kinds of reader response are evoked by literary diagnoses of the present that flirt with alexithymia (the inability to describe feeling); in other words, how a counterfuturistic afterwardly aspires to be productive. I argue that these two novels, as afterwords on a revolution, animate a tensile present that sediments a century of thwarted popular aspirations, enfolds critical temporalities, and resists closure. The article uses the concepts of achrony and ‘robbed time’ to define the afterwardly as creative, counter-textual provocation – skirmishes that continually reterritorialise the political and material ground.

Pancreas disease (PD) caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV) severely affects salmonid aquaculture during the seawater phase. To characterize immune cells in target tissues for SAV infection, heart, pancreas and pyloric caeca were analysed from two groups of fish adapted to seawater for 2 and 9 weeks. The sections were scored for the relative abundance of cells expressing MHC class II, IgM, CD3, CD8 or neutrophil/granulocyte markers using immuno-histochemical techniques. In general, necrosis of tissue was more severe in fish infected at 2 weeks post-seawater transfer (wpt) compared with those infected at 9 wpt. At 9 wpt, there were higher numbers of MHC II+ cells in heart, pancreas and pyloric caeca, IgM+ cells in heart and pancreas, and CD3+ cells in pancreas compared to those infected at 2 wpt. The majority of the immune cells infiltrating PD-affected tissues were MHC II+ and CD3+ cells suggesting that antigen-presenting cells and T lymphocytes are the main types of immune cells responding to SAV infection. All the investigated cell types were also observed in pyloric caeca of infected fish, suggesting that this tissue may play a role in the immune response to SAV.

Pancreas disease (PD) caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV) is the most serious viral disease in Norwegian aquaculture. Study of the immune response to SAV will aid preventative measures including vaccine development. The innate immune response was studied in Atlantic salmon infected by either bath immersion (BI) or by intra-muscular (i.m.) injection (IM) with SAV subtype 3, two and nine weeks after seawater transfer (Phases A and B respectively). Phase A results have been previously published (Moore et al., 2017) and Phase B results are presented here together with a comparison of results achieved in Phase A. There was a rapid accumulation of infected fish in the IM-B (IM Phase B) group and all fish sampled were SAV RNA positive by 7 dpi (days post infection). In contrast, only a few SAV RNA positive (infected) fish were identified at 14, 21 and 28 dpi in the BI-B (BI Phase B) group. Differences in the transcription of several immune genes were apparent when compared between the infected fish in the IM-B and BI-B groups. Transcription of the analysed genes peaked at 7 dpi in the IM-B group and at 14 dpi in the BI-B group. However, this latter finding was difficult to interpret due to the low prevalence of SAV positive fish in this group. Additionally, fish positive for SAV RNA in the BI-B group showed higher transcription of IL-1β, IFNγ and CXCL11_L1, all genes associated with the inflammatory response, compared to the IM-B group. Histopathological changes in the heart were restricted to the IM-B group, while (immune) cell filtration into the pancreas was observed in both groups. Compared to the Phase A fish that were exposed to SAV3 two weeks after seawater transfer, the Phase B fish in the current paper, showed a higher and more sustained innate immune gene transcription in response to the SAV3 infection. In addition, the basal transcription of several innate immune genes in non-infected control fish in Phase B (CT-B) was also significantly different when compared to Phase A control fish (CT-A).

Salmonid alphavirus (SAV) causes pancreas disease (PD) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and disease outbreaks are mainly detected after seawater transfer. The influence of the smoltification process on the immune responses, specifically the adaptive response of Atlantic salmon after SAV infection, is not fully understood. In this study, Atlantic salmon post-smolts were infected by either bath immersion (BI) or intramuscular injection (IM) with SAV subtype 3, 2 weeks (Phase A) or 9 weeks (Phase B) after seawater transfer. The transcript levels of genes related to cellular, humoral and inflammatory responses were evaluated on head kidney samples collected at 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days post-infection (dpi). Corresponding negative control groups (CT) were established accordingly. Significant differences were found between both phases and between the IM and BI groups. The anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was up-regulated in Phase A at a higher level than in Phase B. High mRNA levels of the genes RIG-1, SOCS1 and STAT1 were observed in all groups except the BI-B group (BI-Phase B). Moreover, the IM-B group showed a higher regulation of genes related to cellular responses, such as CD40, MHCII, and IL-15, that indicated the activation of a strong cell-mediated immune response. CD40 mRNA levels were elevated one week earlier in the BI-B group than in the BI-A group (BI-Phase A). A significant up-regulation of IgM and IgT genes was seen in both IM groups, but the presence of neutralizing antibodies to SAV was detected only in Phase B fish at 21 and 28 dpi. In addition, we found differences in the basal levels of some of the analysed genes between non-infected control groups of both phases. Findings suggest that Atlantic salmon post-smolts adapted for a longer time to seawater before they come into contact with SAV, developed a stronger humoral and cell-mediated immune response during a SAV infection. acceptedVersion

Triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) may play an important role in the sustainable expansion of the Norwegian aquaculture industry. Therefore, the susceptibility of triploid salmon to common infections such as salmonid alphavirus (SAV), the causative agent of pancreas disease (PD), requires investigation. In this study, shortly after seawater transfer, diploid and triploid post-smolts were exposed to SAV type 3 (SAV3) using a bath challenge model where the infectious dose was 48 TCID50 ml-1 of tank water. Copy number analysis of SAV3 RNA in heart tissue showed that there was no difference in viral loads between the diploids and triploids. Prevalence reached 100% by the end of the 35-day experimental period in both infected groups. However, prevalence accumulated more slowly in the triploid group reaching 19% and 56% at 14 and 21 days post exposure (dpe) respectively. Whereas prevalence in the diploid group was 82% and 100% at the same time points indicating some differences between diploid and triploid fish. Both heart and pancreas from infected groups at 14 dpe showed typical histopathological changes associated with pancreas disease. Observation of this slower accumulation of prevalence following a natural infection route was possible due to the early sampling points and the exposure to a relatively low dose of virus. The triploid salmon in this study were not more susceptible to SAV3 than diploid salmon indicating that they could be used commercially to reduce the environmental impact of escaped farmed fish interbreeding with wild salmon. This is important information regarding the future use of triploid fish in large scale aquaculture where SAV3 is a financial threat to increased production. publishedVersion

This is an interview with British-Palestinian writer, lawyer and activist Selma Dabbagh, who is the author of a novel, Out of It (2011), a number of short stories and a radio play produced by the BBC, as well as numerous reviews and blogs. Out of It is set in Gaza, the Gulf and London and will be published in Arabic translation in 2014. In this conversation, which began at Lancaster University in November 2013 and extended via email over the next two months, Dabbagh discusses her motivations for, and the challenges of, setting her fiction in parts of the Middle East, in particular Palestine. She comments on her “British-Palestinian” identity and the increasing visibility of Palestinian writing in English and explores the relationship between literary writing, in particular the novel, history and politics.

This article examines memoirs by two high-profile Palestinian authors. The aim is to highlight the exemplarity, in the context of postcolonial studies, of memory work relating to the ongoing colonial context of Palestine. Part I of the article explores the implications of the Palestinian crucible for Edward Said's (partial) life story in Out of Place (1999), highlighting ways in which its treatment underlines the deterritorialised ontology and contrapuntal ethos that constitute keynotes of his seminal contribution to postcolonial studies. Part II discusses the movement in Shehadeh's West Bank writings toward a conception of rememoration - a term used by Paul Ricoeur to evoke an active exercise of memory oriented towards justice - as a future-oriented, ideally collaborative project. I suggest in Part III that Said and Shehadeh provide models of ways in which ‘what remains’ can be conceptualised as a remainder that disrupts, at least at a textual level, the seemingly intractable Israel/Palestine situation.

Salmonid alphavirus subtype 3 (SAV3) causes pancreas disease (PD) and adversely affects salmonid aquaculture in Europe. A better understanding of disease transmission is currently needed in order to manage PD outbreaks. Here, we demonstrate the relationship between viral dose and the outcome of SAV3 infection in Atlantic salmon post-smolts using a bath challenge model. Fish were challenged at 12 °C with 3 different SAV3 doses; 139, 27 and 7 TCID50 L−1 of seawater. A dose of as little as 7 TCID50 L−1 of seawater was able to induce SAV3 infection in the challenged population with a substantial level of variation between replicate tanks and, therefore, likely represents a dose close to the minimum dose required to establish an infection in a population. These data also confirm the highly infectious nature of SAV through horizontal transmission. The outcome of SAV3 infection, evaluated by the prevalence of viraemic fish, SAV3-positive hearts, and the virus shedding rate, was positively correlated to the original SAV3 dose. A maximal shedding rate of 2.4 × 104 TCID50 L−1 of seawater h−1 kg−1 was recorded 10 days post-exposure (dpe) from the highest dose group. The method reported here, for the quantification of infectious SAV3 in seawater, could be useful to monitor PD status or obtain data from SAV3 outbreaks at field locations. This information could be incorporated into pathogen dispersal models to improve risk assessment and to better understand how SAV3 spreads between farms during outbreaks. This information may also provide new insights into the control and mitigation of PD. Salmonid alphavirus (SAV) causes pancreatic disease (PD) in salmonids in Northern Europe which results in large economic losses within the aquaculture industry. In order to better understand the underlying immune mechanisms during a SAV3 infection Atlantic salmon post-smolts were infected by either i.m.-injection or bath immersion and their immune responses compared. Analysis of viral loads showed that by 14 dpi i.m.-injected and bath immersion groups had 95.6% and 100% prevalence respectively and that both groups had developed the severe pathology typical of PD. The immune response was evaluated by using RT-qPCR to measure the transcription of innate immune genes involved in the interferon (IFN) response as well as genes associated with inflammation. Our results showed that IFNa transcription was only weakly upregulated, especially in the bath immersion group. Despite this, high levels of the IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) such as Mx and viperin were observed. The immune response in the i.m.-injected group as measured by immune gene transcription was generally faster, and more pronounced than the response in the bath immersion group, especially at earlier time-points. The response in the bath immersion group started later as expected and appeared to last longer often exceeding the response in the i.m-injected fish at later time-points. High levels of transcription of many genes indicative of an active innate immune response were present in both groups.

Background Pancreas disease (PD), caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV), is an important disease affecting salmonid aquaculture. It has been speculated that Atlantic salmon post-smolts are more prone to infections in the first few weeks following seawater- transfer. After this period of seawater acclimatization, the post-smolts are more robust and better able to resist infection by pathogens. Here we describe how we established a bath immersion (BI) model for SAV subtype 3 (SAV3) in seawater. We also report how this challenge model was used to study the susceptibility of post-smolts to SAV3 infection in two groups of post-smolts two weeks or nine weeks after seawater - transfer. Methods Post-smolts, two weeks (Phase-A) or nine weeks (Phase-B) after seawater- transfer, were infected with SAV3 by BI or intramuscular injection (IM) to evaluate their susceptibility to infection. A RT-qPCR assay targeting the non-structural protein (nsP1) gene was performed to detect SAV3-RNA in blood, heart tissue and electropositive-filtered tank-water. Histopathological changes were examined by light microscope, and the presence of SAV3 antigen in pancreas tissue was confirmed using immuno-histochemistry. Results Virus shedding from the Phase-B fish injected with SAV3 (IM Phase-B) was markedly lower than that from IM Phase-A fish. Literary representations of Morocco sometimes challenge specific colonial, national, and nationalist epistemologies. The work of Paul Bowles, in particular, problematizes conventional categories, not only through the extra-national yearnings of protagonists of his fiction, but also due to the hybrid products of collaborations with Moroccan artists. This article grapples with the contested status of an author profoundly engaged with non-Western epistemology and experience, yet susceptible to Orientalist desire. I focus on Bowles’ novels Let It Come Down and The Spider’s House and then on ways in which the author participated in the emergence of a postcolonial Moroccan body of “texts”. Edward Said’s contrapuntal methodology (2004) and the notion of teleological retrospect (Currie 2007) provide an analytical framework, and Said’s emphasis on labyrinthine and occluded literary relations a rationale for analyzing contexts beyond those directly affected by British colonialism. I argue that Bowles increasingly deprivileges expatriate sensibility and anticipates a critical rereading of colonial history; it is also underpinned by an ambivalent view of writing. While his Moroccan corpus repeatedly enacts the difficulty of “telling the other”, it is nevertheless thematically, structurally, and philosophically invested in the challenges of transcoding, translation, and transvaluation. As such, it illuminates interfaces between colonial discourse, late modernist expatriate/travel writing, and early postcolonial production.

In modern bony fishes, or teleost fish, the general lack of leucocyte markers has greatly hampered investigations of the anatomy of the immune system and its reactions involved in inflammatory responses. We have previously reported the cloning and sequencing of the salmon CD3 complex, molecules that are specifically expressed in T cells. Here, we generate and validate sera recognizing a peptide sequence of the CD3e chain. Flow cytometry analysis revealed high numbers of CD3e+ or T cells in the thymus, gill and intestine, whereas lower numbers were detected in the head kidney, spleen and peripheral blood leucocytes. Subsequent morphological analysis showed accumulations of T cells in the thymus and spleen and in the newly discovered gill-located interbranchial lymphoid tissue. In the latter, the T cells are embedded in a meshwork of epithelial cells and in the spleen, they cluster in the white pulp surrounding ellipsoids. The anatomical organization of the salmonid thymic cortex and medulla seems to be composed of three layers consisting of a sub-epithelial medulla-like zone, an intermediate cortex-like zone and finally another cortex-like basal zone. Our study in the salmonid thymus reports a previously non-described tissue organization. In the intestinal tract, abundant T cells were found embedded in the epithelium. In non-lymphoid organs, the presence of T cells was limited. The results show that the interbranchial lymphoid tissue is quantitatively a very important site of T cell aggregation, strategically located to facilitate antigen encounter. The interbranchial lymphoid tissue has no resemblance to previously described lymphoid tissues.

In mammals CD4 is a membrane glycoprotein on Th cells with four extracellular immunoglobulin-like (Ig-like) domains (D1-D4). It functions as a co-receptor during immune recognition between the TCR and the MHC II/peptide complex. The cytoplasmic domain binds p56lck, a protein kinase responsible for phosphorylating CD3 which is the first interaction in a cascade leading to T cell activation. We have previously reported a CD4-2 gene in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which was found adjacent to the CD4-1 gene by synteny analysis. There are two subtypes (a and b) of CD4-2 in rainbow trout, with two Ig-like extracellular domains. Here we present the homologues of mammalian CD4 in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar): CD4-1 with four extracellular domains and CD4-2a and CD4-2b with two extracellular domains. A Southern blot analysis shows two copies of the CD4-1 gene in the genomic DNA of the closely related rainbow trout. The genes for CD4-1 and CD4-2 have been sequenced and show typical traits for CD4 genes, such as the code for the first domain (D1) being divided between two exons and the other domains being largely coded for by single exons. The corresponding translated cDNAs show little (13-17%) identity to higher vertebrates and are approximately 37% similar to other translated, teleost sequences but are 89% identical to the closely related rainbow trout. However they exhibit conserved features such as the Lck binding motif in their cytoplasmic domains and the order of variable and constant type Ig-like domains. qRT-PCR data are presented describing the differential tissue expression of these genes together with other T cell markers (TCR and CD3) in several individuals.

The CD3 subunits are essential components of the T cell receptor complex, transmitting signals to the inside of the cell. We report here cDNAs and corresponding genes encoding CD3ζ, CD3γδ and CD3e in Atlantic salmon, and real-time RT-PCR analysis to reveal their tissue-specific expression. Salmon CD3ζ is the subunit that shows the highest sequence similarity to the mammalian counterparts, comprising of a short extracellular (EX) part, a transmembrane (TM) peptide and a long cytoplasmic (CY) tail with three immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAMs). The gene encoding CD3ζ in salmon has 7 exons. Salmon CD3γδ (a forerunner of CD3γ and CD3δ in mammals) and CD3e are related molecules each having an Ig-like EX domain, a TM peptide and a CY tail with one ITAM. Two distinct CD3γδ genes were found, each having 6 exons. The gene encoding CD3e in salmon has 5 exons. RT-PCR also revealed a transcript from a degenerated CD3e gene in salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). This pseudogene is located tail to tail to a CD3γδ gene in salmon and has a typical CD3e gene structure with the exception of 1 extra exon. All the CD3 genes in salmon were most abundantly expressed in thymus but the expression of the CD3e pseudogene was only a fraction of that from the intact CD3e gene.

This article explores representations of Algerian women in colonial, decolonizing and postcolonial contexts, drawing in interdisciplinary fashion on written and visual texts by Malek Alloula, Frantz Fanon, Assia Djebar and Zineb Sedira. It problematizes hegemonic constructions of Algerian women, and cites commentators affiliated to Algeria who present pedagogical models of the potential and limits of counter‐representational projects. ‘The Algerian woman’, as a contested and mobile signifier, is thus read as produced by, but always in excess of, historically‐specific discourses and differently‐embodied reading/spectating positions.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is an uncommon inherited skin condition with increased vulnerability to widespread infection by certain human papillomavirus types, resulting in extensive verruca plana-like papules coalescing to large confluent plaques. Since the AIDS epidemic starting in the 1980s, an acquired type of EV has been described in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus. The histopathologic features of EV consist of papillated epidermal hyperplasia with hypergranulosis and a distinct bluish-gray color in the large human papillomavirus-infected keratinocytes in the stratum granulosum. The authors present a case of HIV-associated EV with a unique histopathologic finding of multiple cornoid lamella-like structures. To the authors' knowledge, this finding has not been previously described in the literature.

The genes and corresponding cDNAs of both alpha and beta chains of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) CD8 molecule have been sequenced and characterized. In addition, the cDNAs for alpha and beta chains of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and for the beta chain in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been sequenced. The cDNAs code for signal sequences which are preceded by short 5' UTRs. These are followed by typical immunoglobulin superfamily variable sequences all of which contain two conserved cysteines for the intra-chain disulphide bond. The hinge regions display conserved cysteines for dimerisation and several O-glycosylation motifs for each predicted protein. The domain sharing the highest sequence identity with mammals is the single pass transmembrane domain for all sequences. In salmon, each domain is predominantly coded for by a single exon except the cytoplasmic/3' UTR domains, which are coded for by 3 and 2 exons for the alpha and beta genes, respectively. In the alpha gene, the second cytoplasmic exon may be spliced out to form an alternative shorter transcript which if expressed would exhibit a truncated cytoplasmic tail. A splice variant found for the salmon beta gene introduces a stop codon after only 40 amino acids. Overall amino acid identities between salmonid sequences were higher than 90%, whereas they shared only 15-20% identity with species such as, chicken and human. Analysis of the expression patterns of the two salmon genes using quantitative RT-PCR shows a very high expression in the thymus. This is mirrored by the expression of the TCRalpha gene, which is known to be co-expressed with CD8 on mammalian T cells. This is the first report of a sequence for CD8beta in a teleost and together with the CD8alpha sequence, it encodes the ortholog of the CD8 co-receptor molecule on mammalian T cells.

Infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) is the type species of the genus Isavirus belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae, and causes serious disease in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This study presents the expression and functional analysis of the ISAV genome segment 3, and provides further evidence that it encodes the viral nucleoprotein (NP). The encoded protein was expressed in a baculovirus system, and Western blot analysis showed that it corresponds to the 66–71 kDa structural protein previously found in purified ISAV preparations. RNA-binding activity was established by the interaction of viral and recombinant NP with single-stranded RNA transcribed in vitro. Immunofluorescence studies of infected cells showed the ISAV NP to be an early protein. It locates to the nucleus of infected cells before it is transported to the cytoplasm prior to virus assembly. A similar localization pattern was observed in cells transfected with the NP gene, confirming that the encoded protein has an intrinsic ability to be imported into the nucleus. Two monopartite nuclear localization signals (NLS) at amino acids 230RPKR233 and 473KPKK476 were identified by computer analysis, and validated by site-directed mutagenesis. In contrast to other orthomyxovirus-NPs, that have several NLSs that function independent of each other, both NLSs had to be present for the ISAV NP protein to be transported into the nucleus, indicating that these motifs cooperate to target the protein to the nucleus.

Moore discusses the work of visual artist Shirin Neshat exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery, London, from July to September 2000, which comprised the photographic series Women of Allah and the video installation trilogy Turbulent, Rapture and Fervor . Her emphasis is on the way in which Neshat's work addresses the critical issues of positioning, representation and cross-cultural reception. The exhibition was marketed as referring to 'the social, cultural, and religious codes of Muslim societies in general, and Iranian society in particular'. Moore argues, however, that the images tend to project a departicularized cultural context that encourages a neo-orientalist interpretation. She first analyses Women of Allah in terms of symbolic projections of womanhood during the Islamic revolution in Iran and in light of post-revolutionary gendered realities. Interactions among host, microbiota and viral pathogens are complex and poorly understood. The goal of the present study is to assess the changes in the skin microbial community of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in response to experimental infection with salmonid alphavirus (SAV). The salmon skin microbial community was determined using 16S rDNA pyrosequencing in five different experimental groups: control, 7 days after infection with low-dose SAV, 14 days after infection with low-dose SAV, 7 days after infection with high-dose SAV, and 14 days after infection with high-dose SAV. Both infection treatment and time after infection were strong predictors of the skin microbial community composition. Skin samples from SAV3 infected fish showed an unbalanced microbiota characterized by a decreased abundance of Proteobacteria such as Oleispira sp. and increased abundances of opportunistic taxa including Flavobacteriaceae, Streptococcaceae and Tenacibaculum sp. These results demonstrate that viral infections can result in skin dysbiosis likely rendering the host more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections.
