Understanding “efficiency roll-off” (i.e., the drop in emission efficiency with increasing current) is critical if efficient and bright emissive technologies are to be rationally designed. Emerging light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) can be cost- and energy-efficiently fabricated by ambient-air printing by virtue of the in situ formation of a p-n junction doping structure. However, this in situ doping transformation renders a meaningful efficiency analysis challenging. Herein, a method for separation and quantification of major LEC loss factors, notably the outcoupling efficiency and exciton quenching, is presented. Specifically, the position of the emissive p-n junction in common singlet-exciton emitting LECs is measured to shift markedly with increasing current, and the influence of this shift on the outcoupling efficiency is quantified. It is further verified that the LEC-characteristic high electrochemical-doping concentration renders singlet-polaron quenching (SPQ) significant already at low drive current density, but also that SPQ increases super-linearly with increasing current, because of increasing polaron density in the p-n junction region. This results in that SPQ dominates singlet-singlet quenching for relevant current densities, and significantly contributes to the efficiency roll-off. I regleringsbrevet för 2023 fick Energimyndigheten i uppdrag av regeringen att utreda hur solcellspaneler och vindturbinblad till vindkraftverk i högre utsträckning ska kunna tas om hand på ett giftfritt och cirkulärt sätt i enlighet med avfallshierarkin. Redovisningen av detta regeringsuppdrag, rapporten Från avfall till resurs – Förslag för en mer cirkulär hantering av solcellspaneler och vindturbinblad, ER 2024:11, baseras på denna underlagsrapport som har tagits fram av forskningsinstitutet RISE på uppdrag av Energimyndigheten. Analyser, slutsatser och förslag/rekommendationer som framförs i rapporten är författarnas egna.En fortsatt utbyggnad av fossilfri elproduktion är av stor vikt för att vi ska kunna nå Sveriges energi- och klimatmål. För att utbyggnaden i sig ska vara hållbar är det viktigt att vi redan nu planerar för hur avfallet från dessa elproduktionsanläggningar ska förebyggas, minimeras och sedan hanteras.Det finns redan i dagsläget aktörer som har utvecklat och håller på att utveckla ett flertal olika lösningar för ökad cirkularitet. Dessa möjligheter kan tas tillvara och främjas genom regelbunden kartläggning och genom att arbeta gemensamt inom EU. Genom ett sådant arbete finns det också större möjligheter att etablera industriella värdekedjor i Sverige för hanteringen av avfallet från solcellspaneler och vindturbinblad.En cirkulär hantering av avfall ger ett betydligt mindre avtryck på miljön än det som en linjär hantering ger upphov till. The position of the emission zone (EZ) in the active material of a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) has a profound influence on its performance because of microcavity effects and doping- and electrode-induced quenching. Previous attempts of EZ control have focused on the two principal constituents in the active material-the organic semiconductor (OSC) and the mobile ions-but this study demonstrates that it is possible to effectively control the EZ position through the inclusion of an appropriate additive into the active material. More specifically, it is shown that a mere modification of the end group on an added neutral compound, which also functions as an ion transporter, results in a shifted EZ from close to the anode to the center of the active material, which translates into a 60% improvement of the power efficiency. This particular finding is rationalized by a lowering of the effective electron mobility of the OSC through specific additive: OSC interactions, but the more important generic conclusion is that it is possible to control the EZ position, and thereby the LEC performance, by the straightforward inclusion of an easily tuned additive in the active material.

Recombinant sequences of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant were detected in surveillance samples collected in north-western Finland in January 2022. We detected 191 samples with an identical genome arrangement in weeks 3 to 11, indicating sustained community transmission. The recombinant lineage has a 5’-end of BA.1, a recombination breakpoint between orf1a and orf1b (nucleotide position 13,296–15,240) and a 3’-end of BA.2 including the S gene. We describe the available genomic and epidemiological data about this currently circulating recombinant XJ lineage.

The photochemical coupling of fullerene molecules into covalently connected oligomeric or polymeric structures can result in drastically lowered solubility in common solvents with retained semiconductor properties. Here, we exploit this combination of properties for the utilization of fullerenes as a negative photoresist material with electronic functionality. Specifically, we develop an easily tunable exposure system, essentially comprising a laser and a computer-controlled spatial light modulator (SLM) featuring >8 million independently controlled pixels, for the spatially selective photochemical transformation of nanometer-thin C60 fullerene films. With a carefully designed laser-SLM-exposure/solvent-development cycle, we are able to realize well-resolved two-dimensional hexagonal or square patterns of circular C60 microdots with a center-to-center distance of 1–5 μm and a maximum thickness of 20–35 nm over several square-millimeter-sized areas on a substrate. The functionality of such a hexagonal C60 pattern was demonstrated by its inclusion in between the transparent electrode and the active material in a light-emitting electrochemical cell, which featured an enhanced light output by >50% in comparison to a reference device void of the patterned C60 layer., Previously included in thesis in manuscript form.

The electrolyte is an essential constituent of the light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), since its operating mechanism is dependent on the redistribution of mobile ions in the active layer. Recent developments of new ion transporters have yielded high-performance devices, but knowledge about the interactions between the ionic species and the ion transporters and the influence of these interactions on the LEC performance is lacking. We therefore present a combined computational and experimental effort that demonstrates that the selection of the end group in a star-branched oligomeric ion transporter based on trimethylolpropane ethoxylate has a paramount influence on the ionic interactions in the electrolyte and thereby also on the performance of the corresponding LECs. With hydroxyl end groups, the the salt is strongly coordinated to the ion transporter, which leads to suppression of ion pairing, but the penalty is a hindered ion release and a slow turn-on for the LEC devices. With methoxy end groups, an intermediate coordination strength is seen together with the formation of contact ion pairs, but the LEC performance is very good with fast turn-on. Using a series of ion transporters with alkyl carbonate end groups, the ion transporter:cation coordination strength is lowered further, but the turn-on kinetics are slower than what is seen for devices comprising the methoxy end-capped ion transporter.

The light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) exhibits capacity for efficient charge injection from two air stable electrodes into a single-layer active material, which is commonly interpreted as implying that the LEC operation is independent of the electrode selection. Here, we demonstrate that this is far from the truth and that the electrode selection instead has a strong influence on the LEC performance. We systematically investigate 13 different materials for the positive anode and negative cathode in a common LEC configuration with the conjugated polymer Super Yellow as the electroactive emitter and find that Ca, Mn, Ag, Al, Cu, indium tin oxide (ITO), and Au function as the LEC cathode, whereas ITO and Ni can operate as the LEC anode. Importantly, we demonstrate that the electrochemical stability of the electrode is paramount and that particularly electrochemical oxidation of the anode can prohibit the functional LEC operation. We finally report that it appears preferable to design the device so that the heights of the injection barriers at the two electrode/active material interfaces are balanced in order to mitigate electrode-induced quenching of the light emission. As such, this study has expanded the set of air-stable electrode materials available for functional LEC operation and also established a procedure for the evaluation and design of future efficient electrode materials.

We report on the in situ measured evolution of the spectral complex refractive index of a prototypical conjugated polymer, a phenyl-substituted poly (para-phenylenevinylene) copolymer (Ph-PPV, “Super Yellow”), during electrochemical p- and n-type doping. We find that the real part of the refractive index is lowered in a significant and continuous fashion over essentially the entire visible range with doping, as exemplified by a drop in the peak value at ∼480 nm from 2.1 for pristine Ph-PPV to 1.8 at a p-type doping concentration of 0.2 dopants per repeat unit and an n-type doping concentration of 0.6 dopants per repeat unit. The imaginary part features a concomitant distinct bleaching of the high-energy π–π* transition and the emergence of a low-energy polaron band. Interestingly, we observe that the optical response of Ph-PPV to p-type and n-type doping is highly asymmetric, with the former resulting in much stronger changes and a distinct blue-shift of all optical transitions. We tentatively attribute this difference in response to larger effective size of the p-type polaron compared to the n-type polaron. We anticipate that the presented results should be of value for the rational design of emerging optical devices that utilize the doping capacity of conjugated polymers.

Objective: To better characterize patients who are currently being prescribed teriparatide in Europe, this article describes the study design and baseline characteristics of participants of the Extended Forsteo* Observational Study (ExFOS). Research design and methods: ExFOS is a noninterventional, multicenter, prospective, observational study in men and women with osteoporosis treated with teriparatide during the course of normal clinical practice for up to 24 months and with a post-treatment follow-up of at least 18 months. Main outcome measures: Baseline characteristics, including history of fracture and back pain, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, assessed using the EuroQol-5 Dimension [EQ-5D]). Results: Of 1607 patients enrolled, 90.9% were women. At baseline, mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 70.3 (9.8) years, and 85.8% of patients had a history of fracture (64.7% with >= 2 fragility fractures). Of those with historic fractures, 90.8% had vertebral fractures (67.8% had thoracic fractures). The mean (SD) of reported bone mineral density T-scores were -3.0 (1.2), -2.4 (1.0), and -2.5 (0.9) for lumbar spine, total hip (left), and femoral neck (left), respectively. Overall, 39.3% of patients had experienced >= 1 fall during the 12 months before enrollment. At baseline, 11.4% of patients were osteoporosis-treatment naive and 15% were currently using glucocorticoids. The mean (SD) visual analog scale score for back pain during the last month was 50.7 (26.9), and 62.1% of patients experienced daily or almost daily back pain. The median EQ-5D health state value at baseline was 0.62 (first and third quartiles: 0.19, 0.74). Conclusions: Baseline characteristics of the ExFOS study cohort indicate that patients prescribed teriparatide in Europe have severe osteoporosis with highly prevalent vertebral fractures, frequent and disabling back pain, and a poor HRQoL, despite previous pharmacotherapy for osteoporosis. A new bilayer light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) device, which allows well-defined patterned light emission through an easily adjustable, mask-free, and additive fabrication process, is reported. The bilayer stack comprises an inkjet-printed lattice of micrometer-sized electrolyte droplets, in a filled or patterned lattice configuration. On top of this, a thin layer of light-emitting compound is deposited from solution. The light emission is demonstrated to originate from regions proximate to the interfaces between the inkjetted electrolyte, the light-emitting compound, and one electrode, where bipolar electron/hole injection and electrochemical doping are facilitated by ion motion. By employing KCF3SO3 in poly(ethylene glycol) as the electrolyte, Super Yellow as the light-emitting compound, and two air-stabile electrodes, it is possible to realize filled lattice devices that feature uniform yellow-green light emission to the naked eye, and patterned lattice devices that deliver well-defined and high-contrast static messages with a pixel density of 170 PPI.

In patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, measurements were made of basal and stimulated levels of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH). The basal PTH values were elevated in all but six of 89 patients and provided clear separation towards normal individuals (n = 75) and patients with hypercalcemia of other origin (n = 34). The PTH value correlated with the serum calcium concentration in hyperparathyroidism and with the weight of excised parathyroid adenomas but not with that of chief cell hyperplasias. A constant ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid infusion during 60 minutes of induced essentially linear reductions of plasma-ionized calcium concentrations, averaging 0.02 mmol/L/10 minutes, which were associated with swift, curvilinear, elevations of PTH levels that reached a plateau after 10 to 20 minutes. The increment in serum PTH level correlated with the basal PTH value both in patients with hyperparathyroidism and controls. However, in proportion to the much greater glandular mass in the patients with hyperparathyroidism, the secretion of PTH was relatively reduced. The findings support the value of the intact PTH assay in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia and show that PTH secretion in vivo is extremely sensitive to hypocalcemic stimulation, that the pathological parathyroid tissue in hyperparathyroidism is characterized by a reduction of hormone release per unit weight, and that the hormone secretion in hyperparathyroidism operates closer to its maximal capacity than under normal circumstances.
