Development of thermoplastic composites (TPCs) for aerospace structures is experiencing renewed enthusiasm attributed to the availability of rapid manufacturing technology, ease of joining through fusion welding processes, and the successful utilization of the material in flight critical structures. Semicrystalline thermoplastics such as polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polyether ketone ketone (PEKK), and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) have been successfully demonstrated as thermoplastic skins, keel beams, and angle brackets for commercial aircraft. Composite specimens were fabricated from the Toray TC1225 and TC1200 unidirectional prepreg systems and tested to gain confidence with NASA in-house TPC processing as part of the Thermoplastics Development for Exploration Application (TDEA) project. TC1225 is a relatively new material system that uses T700GC fibers and low-melt polyaryl ether ketone (LM-PAEK) resin. TC1200 is the latest version of a material system that has been available for several decades with AS4 fibers and PEEK resin. Results for ultrasonic inspection, optical microscopy, acid digestion, and differential scanning calorimetry establish the quality of the panels. Mechanical test data for unnotched and notched laminate tension and compression as well as compression after impact provide data for equivalency assessment and support material selection in TDEA. Satisfactory equivalence of the TC1225 results and the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP) database was found. The results indicate high-quality manufacturing was achieved, and the resulting mechanical test data are in agreement with that in the literature.

Flexible, conformal polyimide aerogels with low density, good mechanical properties and high surface areas have attracted much attention for many potential applications such as lightweight antenna substrates, insulating materials for launch vehicles, inflatable structures, aircraft or space suits. Development and improvements to fabrication of polyimide aerogel thin films have been reported over the last decade to meet the needs of many of these applications. However, most starting materials are expensive. In this research, we utilized commercially available, low cost monomers including 4,4’-bis(4-aminophenoxy)propane (BAPP) and 3,3’,4,4’-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and 4,4-methylene diphenyl di-isocyanate (MDI) in fabricating polyimide (PI) and polyimide-urea (PIU), which were then cross-linked with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (TAB). It was found that the addition of MDI into the PI chains not only maintained the flexibility of the aerogel films, but also enhanced the film casting, allowing the production on pilot scale. With the capability in producing robust films at affordable cost, application of the PIU aerogel films can be expanded to terrestrial goods such as winter clothing, or pipe wrapping, etc. In addition, the presence of only a small addition of the urea links in the polyimide chains in PIU aerogels led to lower shrinkage when compared to the corresponding PI aerogels, leading to lower density

A single sheet of nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy (SMA) was introduced within an IM7/8552 polymer matrix composite (PMC) panel in conjunction with multiple thin film adhesives to promote the interfacial bond strength between the SMA and PMC. End notched flexure (ENF) testing was performed in accordance to ASTM D7905 method for evaluation of mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) of unidirectional fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites. Acoustic emissions (AE) were monitored during testing with two acoustic sensors attached to the specimens. The composite panels examined using scanning electron microscopy techniques after part failure. GIIC values for the control composite samples were found to be higher than those of samples with embedded SMA sheets. The presence of adhesives bonded to SMA sheets further diminished the GIIC values. AE values revealed poor bonding of the panels, with little to no signals during testing.
