There has been little progress in development of evidence-based interventions to improve sexuality outcomes for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of an individualised intervention using a cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) framework to treat sexuality problems after TBI. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline single-case design with 8-week follow-up and randomisation to multiple baseline lengths (3, 4, or 6 weeks) was repeated across nine participants (five female) with complicated mild–severe TBI (mean age = 46.44 years (SD = 12.67), mean post-traumatic amnesia = 29.14 days (SD = 29.76), mean time post-injury = 6.56 years (median = 2.50 years, SD = 10.11)). Treatment comprised eight weekly, individual sessions, combining behavioural, cognitive, and educational strategies to address diverse sexuality problems. Clinical psychologists adopted a flexible, patient-centred, and goal-orientated approach whilst following a treatment guide and accommodating TBI-related impairments. Target behaviour was subjective ratings of satisfaction with sexuality, measured three times weekly. Secondary outcomes included measures of sexuality, mood, self-esteem, and participation. Goal attainment scaling (GAS) was used to measure personally meaningful goals. Preliminary support was shown for intervention effectiveness, with most cases demonstrating sustained improvements in subjective sexuality satisfaction and GAS goal attainment. Based on the current findings, larger clinical trials are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Testing for antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been instrumental in detecting previous exposures and analyzing vaccine-elicited immune responses. Here, we describe a scalable "Made-in-Canada" solution that can detect and quantify SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, discriminate between natural infection- and vaccination-induced responses, and assess antibody-mediated inhibition of the spike-angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) interaction. METHODS: We developed a set of methods and reagents to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The main assays focus on the parallel detection of immunoglobulin (Ig)Gs against the spike trimer, its receptor binding domain (RBD), and the nucleocapsid (N) protein. These antigens are complemented by a detection antibody (human anti-IgG fused to horseradish peroxidase (HRP)) and a positive control reference antibody (recombinant IgG against the RBD), permitting intra- and inter-laboratory comparisons. Using this toolkit and commercial reagents, we optimized automated ELISAs on two different high throughput platforms to measure antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 antigens. The assays were calibrated to a reference standard from the World Health Organization. We also automated a surrogate neutralization (sn)ELISA that measures inhibition of ACE2-Spike or -RBD interactions by antibodies using biotinylated ACE2. RESULTS: Our individual IgG-based ELISAs measure antibody levels in single-point measurements in reference to a standard antibody curve to accurately distinguish non-infected and infected individuals (area under the curve > 0.96 for each assay). Positivity thresholds can be established in individual assays using precision-recall analysis (e.g., by fixing the false positive rate), or more stringently, by scoring against the distribution of the means of negative samples across multiple assays performed over several months. For seroprevalence assessment (in a non-vaccinated cohort), classifying a sample as positive if antibodies were detected for at least 2 of the 3 antigens provided the highest specificity. In vaccinated cohorts, increases in anti-spike and -RBD (but not -N) antibodies are observed. Here, we present detailed protocols to perform these assays using either serum/plasma or dried blood spots both manually and on two automated platforms, and to express the results in international units to facilitate data harmonization and inter-study comparisons. We also demonstrate that the snELISA can be performed automatically at single points, increasing the scalability of this functional assay for large seroprevalence studies. INTERPRETATION: The ability to measure antibodies to three viral antigens and identify neutralizing antibodies capable of disrupting spike-ACE2 interactions in high-throughput assays enables large-scale analyses of humoral immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination. The "Made-in-Canada" set of protein reagents, produced at the National Research Council of Canada are publicly available to enable the up-scaling of standardized serological assays, permitting nationwide data comparison and aggregation.

This study tests the assertion that the online dissemination of theses has a positive impact on the research profile of the institution and sets out to gain a greater understanding of how digital theses fit into the scholarly resources landscape. The year-long study combined primary and secondary research and was undertaken with the London School of Economics, based on its programme of theses digitization. The paper outlines the types of metrics an institution may use to measure the impact of its corpus of digitized dissertations and examines how these metrics may be generated. Findings included: a higher volume of theses attracts more traffic; Google’s strong indexing capabilities make it the most frequentlyused tool for discovery of digital theses; primary conclusions are that there is little correlation between downloads and citations of digitized theses; having a digital thesis collection enhances the reputation of the institution; although they recognize that digital theses are a valuable research tool, postgraduates and academics widely believe that making them available affects future publication opportunities; building and maintaining a digital thesis collection makes considerable ‘hidden’ work for librarians in terms of training about copyright and permissions. Some conclusions: better statistics are needed, especially of citations; institutions need to promote digital thesis collections better; more work needs to be done on whether digitizing theses impairs authors’ chances of traditional publication and on how digital theses affect and are affected by the open access movement.

In September 2015, when the UN General Assembly included a global education-focused target in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, they signaled the importance of a new set of skills and knowledge that all learners must acquire. Indeed, it is no longer enough for every child to have access to education and to master reading, writing, and math. The global community is now endeavoring to develop students into global citizens, capable of finding solutions for the world's greatest challenges and motivated to instill peace and justice into their communities. Educators must understand these important concepts, such as global citizenship, education for sustainable development, human rights, and the promotion of a culture of peace, that shape children's lives if they are to effectively support children in their development and prepare them for the 21st century.

Anecdotal evidence has long lamented the status of social studies in elementary classrooms as observed by preservice teachers. As standardized testing has risen for mathematics and language arts, social studies has been pushed aside. In the aftermath of accountability legislation such as No Child Left Behind, research indicates that social studies is less visible in elementary classrooms due to an instructional focus on tested content areas (e.g. math, language arts, reading). In this study, approximately 90 elementary preservice teachers enrolled in a social studies methods course responded to a survey and indicated the frequency and quality of lessons they observed over the course of a single semester. Findings report that preservice elementary teachers witnessed few, if any, lessons in social studies in the elementary classroom. Implications for teacher education are discussed.

With more than a century of combined trial experience, we discuss the demise of pharmaceutical company inflammatory arthritis clinical trials, speaking from our experience in Canada while potentially generalizing to the United States, Western Europe, and other regions where patients have reasonable access to medical care and therapeutics. The purpose of this editorial is 2-fold: to raise awareness of the critical state of rheumatology clinical trials in Canada; and to describe the increasingly insurmountable barriers facing trialists because of difficulty recruiting owing to trial designs (some requiring substandard care for participation); recent changes in trial operations and management; and the financial burden placed on trialists. The challenges are not unique to rheumatology1,2. Many industry-funded trials are not feasible. This can shift investigators to conducting non-pharmaceutical trials to answer challenging important questions, but the trials are usually extremely underfunded, creating a barrier to participation. Traditionally, clinical research has been the only means whereby advances in medicine can be translated into excellent patient care. Trial participation facilitates greater acceptance of innovative treatments and the integration of successful treatments into optimal care. There is no replacement for phase II and III clinical trial experience: Clinical trialists are early adopters and comfortable prescribers of new therapies once they are approved because they have acquired invaluable experience of novel products. In contrast, current trials are mostly bureaucratic and time-consuming to initiate and conduct, and they do not reflect the population studied. In fact, clinical research is becoming increasingly onerous with respect to regulatory and administrative requirements and is very expensive (in people and time resources) while, simultaneously, recruitment has dwindled (years ago, sites could enroll 10 subjects in a study vs 0 to 4 per study today). This paper explores the likely effect on publishers’ revenues from academic libraries if a six-month embargo on journals articles were to become mandatory. Fifty-six per cent of librarians with STM holdings said that they would probably continue their subscriptions unchanged; 10% said that they would definitely cancel; and 34% said that they might cancel some journals. Thirty-five per cent of librarians with AHSS holdings said that they would probably continue their subscriptions unchanged; 23% said that they would definitely cancel; and 42% said that they might cancel some journals.

It is enchanting when over twenty students' quilt squares make a quilt. The common yet diverse techniques for making a quilt transform the students' quilt squares into a shared quilting experience. A quilt made by students in one classroom can demonstrate a unique characteristic of each student by combining their squares into a quilt about a common theme in the social studies curriculum. The quilts become a lasting record of the students' de pictions of the theme under study and contributions to a class project. The six quilts described in this article demonstrate how to make class quilts us ing social studies themes. The lessons learned by the students and teachers are shared and additional resources are provided to extend the experiences of elementary students quilting through social studies.

The purpose of the study was to determine the responsibilities and qualifications of social studies education faculty positions as listed in The Chronicle of Higher Education during the 2004–2005 academic year. Many of the listings conveyed expectations for social studies educators to teach undergraduate courses, supervise interns, write grants and publications, and use educational technology. Fifty-one of the listed positions were at institutions designated as the doctoral granting and master's colleges and universities levels of the Carnegie rankings for higher education.

Based on a paper presented at the UKSG seminar ‘E-book: the new serial?’, The British Library Conference Centre, London,Wednesday 9 November 2005 E-books are not new but they are part of a sea-change in academic delivery that is altering both publishing and the way that teaching and learning are carried out. Publishers appear alarmed by this and have tended to cling to print as if producing publications in one format were their main purpose.This paper argues strongly that it is not. E-resources have migrated from being on the fringe of academia to establishing themselves as mainstream, and publishers seem barely aware of the resulting shift in resource requirements. If they do not become more alert to this, they are in grave danger of being by-passed. At the same time, librarians and academics should acknowledge that there is a very important role for publishers to play, that academia would be much the poorer without their services, and that, inevitably, there is a fair price to be attached to these.

A key aspect of Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis is the ability of the bacteria to survive within the host macrophage. A phagosome containing an IgG-coated bead matures into a lysosomal compartment as evidenced by a decrease in pH and an increased acquisition of hydrolytic enzymes. In contrast, when M. tuberculosis is phagocytosed, the maturation of the bacteria-containing phagosome is arrested, and the bacterium resides within a vacuole that retains characteristics of early endosomal compartments. M. tuberculosis-containing phagosomes are delayed in the recruitment of the early endosome autoantigen EEA1. Acquisition of EEA1 is dependent on the presence of phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PI-3-P) generated by the kinase Vps34. We tested the hypothesis that delayed recruitment of EEA1 was due to altered kinetics of PI-3-P accumulation at the phagosomal membrane. Biochemical analysis of the phosphatidylinositol phosphates on M. tuberculosis-containing phagosomes revealed that PI-3-P acquisition was markedly retarded and reduced in comparison to IgG bead-containing phagosomes. Given the role these lipids play in the regulation of phagosome maturation these findings have implications with respect to the mechanisms behind the arrest of phagosome maturation.

The purpose of this paper is identify those characteristics of instructional technology that may influence a faculty member's willingness to integrate it in his/her teaching by drawing upon the diffusion of innovation literature. It then presents the results of a study, conducted at a small liberal arts college, on the effectiveness of a faculty training program that was designed to encourage faculty to adopt a course management system in their classroom-based, undergraduate courses. The training program was based on an approach that considers those factors that influence the adoption rate of technology, specifically the course management system, Blackboard.

IN THE SPRING OF 2000, the National Education Association and Blackboard Inc. commissioned The Institute of Higher Education Policy, to identify the benchmarks considered essential to ensuring excellence in Internet-based distance learning. The Institute’s study revealed that there were 24 benchmarks considered essential to ensuring excellence in Internet-based distance learning. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the extent to which the benchmarks in the Course Development, Teaching/Learning Process, Course Structure and Faculty Support categories of the Institute’s study are being incorporated in the policies, procedures, and practices of a random sample of institutions of higher education offering Internet-based distance education courses.

In the present inquiry I explicate through a Feminist lens, curious and often amusing metamorphoses of Judith's integrity and complexity as a female hero in Israel as they are expressed in opera and oratorio. Within the purview of these genres the integrity of the apocryphal Judith's characterization is variously maintained, elaborated, ignored, transferred to other characters, transformed, or obliterated by librettists and animateurs. Diverse methodological perspectives inform observations pertinent to librettos, music, mise en scene and aspects of characterization as they are animated in the artistic process/product and transmitted via their critics in the media.

At its annual meeting on September 19, the Compensation & Benefits Review Advisory Board discussed a number of timely issues that relate to the current economic boom and the technological forces that are reshaping the way we work. The session opened with a presentation on compensation concerns in corporate restructurings, including mergers, acquisitions, sales, spinoffs, and IPOS. The board also discussed how compensation and benefits specialists' roles have changed dramatically, especially in the past decade. Strategic analysis is assuming an ever greater importance at the expense of traditional compensation and benefits transactional and calculating duties, which are more and more often outsourced. Board members also raised the issue of what might happen to their incentive plans and 401(k) plans if the stock market should experience severe losses and stay flat. Discussion focussed on how to build provisions into pay and benefit plans to moderate some of the worse effects of a major market stumble.

This paper describes the first part of a resources provision experiment that is currently taking place at Plymouth University; it involves the ‘free’ provision of all recommended texts to first year Psychology students in digital format, supplied via the Vital Source electronic delivery platform. The university is paying a discounted price for the service by subtracting the sum negotiated from course fees. The paper draws on student feedback collected from Dr Philip Gee, the Course Director, after the first term. It places the initiative within the wider context of changes in academia and academic publishing. It is an interim account, to be followed up with a more detailed report when the project has been completed in 2014. Broadly, initial reactions from students were favourable, though some said that they would have preferred print if it had also been available ‘free’ and a small minority did not like the e-book format at all.

In the last issue of Compensation & Benefits Review, we reported on the CBR Advisory's Board's take on compensation fads, custom pay plans, and team pay. In this issue, we focus on the following issues: 1. what companies are doing to justify CEO pay; 2. how multinationals are moving expatriates to local or regional pay standards (rather than U.S. standards) and how they're handling high inflation and currency fluctuations; and 3. whether employers are distancing themselves from benefits and whether this, combined with trends in taxation and in the economy, spells the begin ning of a major retreat from the private employer benefits system in the U.S.

In a wide-ranging discussion at the Compensation & Benefits Review Advisory Board meeting last Fall, board members and AMA editors and man agers talked about significant new developments in compensation and benefits. During the first part of the all-day session, the board discussed such top ics as how buzzwords and fads affect compensa tion design; how restructuring and downsizing are influencing pay plans; the drawbacks of telecom muting ; the increasing mobility of knowledge workers; how to customize a pay program; how firms are offering stock options for nonexecs; the uses of competency-based pay; and trends in team- based pay. The board's comments on these topics are reported in the roundtable below.

A benefits plan that rewards employee management of health provides an alternative to employer management of care.

Contact lens comfort has been the focus of many clinical studies and review articles.1–6 This is not surprising as it is estimated that, while there are 3.5 million new contact lens wearers each year, approximately two to three million established lens wearers drop out of contact lens wear. Dryness and discomfort are cited as key reasons.7,8 For those who remain in contact lenses, ocular dryness continues to be a significant complaint, with up to four out of five lens wearers affected,3 and one in four contact lens wearers finding that it adversely affects their wearing time.9 Comfort in successful contact lens wearers should not be taken for granted.9 A patient who wears their lenses on a full-time basis over a certain wearing period is commonly considered to be a successful lens wearer. Comfort is a dependent variable and therefore subject to fluctuations during contact lens wear. Patient-specific factors as well as external factors can influence subjective comfort to varying degrees, even in successful full-time contact lens wearers.9 Most commonly, successful contact lens wearers experience a decrease in comfort towards the end of the day.2,10 While it may or may not be enough to reduce wearing time, this decrease in comfort is undesirable nonetheless. Maintaining and optimizing lens-wearing comfort for successful contact lens wearers is crucial to minimize contact lens dropout, and is the focus of the current study.5 Contact lens practitioners have an important role in supporting and maintaining the success of their contact lens wearers. This can be particularly difficult when patients do not voice complaints during their annual exams. Effective questioning at contact lens visits can elucidate otherwise unrecognized issues and generate possible opportunities for improvement in patient comfort. Similarly, a solid understanding of a patient’s medical history, environment and lifestyle are valuable tools for predicting and managing a patient’s ongoing success. In addition, thoughtful choice of a contact lens and its partner solution contribute to contact lens-wearing success. Advances in contact lens material technology, providing greater flexibility in lens wear schedules and improved health benefits, allow practitioners to choose lenses ideally suited to a patient’s individual requirements. These new materials have demonstrated tangible improvements in patient comfort, as well as in a patient’s overall satisfaction.11–16 While the optimal choice of contact lens is directly related to a patient’s satisfaction, it is very important to consider the synergistic relationship between contact lens and lens care solution. Multipurpose solutions comprise different formulations that may provide additional benefits, extending contact lens-wearing success.17 In this investigation into lens-wearing comfort, two polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) (0.0001%)-preserved lens care solutions, Complete® Multi-Purpose Solution (MPS) Easy Rub® (AMO, Santa Ana, CA, USA) and ReNu MultiPlus® MPS (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA), were compared with a third solution, OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution (MPDS; Alcon Laboratories Inc, Fort Worth, TX, USA), preserved with Polyquaternium-1 (POLYQUAD®) and myristamidopropyl dimethylamine (ALDOX®) 0.0005%. PHMB is a broadspectrum cationic antimicrobial agent. It electrostatically binds to (and in turn destroys) the cytoplasmic membranes of microbes, disrupting metabolic activity and resulting in irreversible loss of intracellular components.18 POLYQUAD® is a quaternary ammonium compound. An antimicrobial agent with attenuated toxicity, it reduces the surface tension at interfaces and denatures microbial cell wall proteins, causing microbial cell death.18 ALDOX®, a cationic amidoamine, is an antifungal/anti-amoebic that works in synergy with POLYQUAD® in OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® MPDS to meet the highest standard of ISO and FDA criteria for the disinfection of bacteria and fungi.19 Additionally, OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® MPDS contains a TearGlyde® reconditioning system, incorporating Tetronic 1304 and C9-ED3A (nonanoyl ethylenediaminetriacetic acid). The components are attracted to the surface and matrix of silicone hydrogel and traditional hydrogel lenses and form a network to maintain a thin layer of moisture on the lens surface throughout the day. OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® MPDS has been shown to increase contact lens comfort in the most common hydrogel material among those who experience discomfort20 and maintain a low wetting angle after 14 hours of lens wear as demonstrated in ex vivo clinical studies.21 OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® MPDS is a new generation contact lens solution formulated to provide benefits in the key areas of lens wettability,22–25 lens cleaning,19,26 and biocompatible disinfection.27 In addition, it has demonstrated clinical biocompatibility with both traditional hydrogel and silicone hydrogel lens materials.25,26 The current study investigates the patient benefit of transitioning successful full-time, daily wear, soft contact lens wearers currently using competitive older-generation multipurpose solutions to OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® MPDS.

Goals of the study were to assess whether adoptees in treatment for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) (1) were over-, equi-, or under-represented in a clinical sample of patients with (SUD) and (2) differed demographically and clinically from non-adoptees with SUD. Sample consisted of 608 patients in two alcohol-drug treatment programs. Data collection included the Childhood Problems Scale, the Minnesota Substance Abuse Problem Scale, and the Minnesota Substance Abuse Treatment Questionnaire, and the Michigan Assessment-Screening Test/Alcohol-Drug. Findings showed that the prevalence of adoptees among SUD patients was 14 times higher than expected (95% Confidence Interval, 10 to 18 times). Adoptees reported childhood histories similar to those of non-adoptees with "any parental SUD", but they more closely resembled non-adoptees without parental SUD in regard to SUD severity and SUD treatment. Conclusion is that adoptees and their adoptive families should be alert to the increased risk of SUD among adoptees. Clinicians can expect that adoptees should manifest milder levels of SUD morbidity, similar to "non-heredity" SUD.

A new, in-depth research study into what makes group incentive reward programs successful found that site variables have more than twice as much impact on how well employees respond to a group incentive reward program as do plan variables themselves, although both are important. Site variables include such factors as top management's attitude toward the group incentive reward plan at each site, the enthusiasm for the plan at each site, and methods of plan implementation at each site. This is one of the key preliminary research findings on group incentive reward programs from the most recent CARS research project. These findings were presented by Susan Murphy (SRM, Inc.), Elizabeth Hawk (Sibson and Company), and Jerry Mc Adams (Watson Wyatt) at the American Compensation Association's annual conference in Orlando, Florida, on May 7. "CARS" is an acronym for an ongoing ACA research project into reward strategies sponsored by the Consortium for Alternative Reward Strategies research. "CARS IV, Group Plan Effectiveness: Case Study Research," consisted of an in-depth study of group incentive plans in 11 manufacturing groups in four companies. The study sought to determine the effect of the plans on all levels of employees, on business performance, and on organizational culture. The methodology included more than 70 management interviews, 1,200 employee surveys, and 22 employee focus groups, as well as quantitative data.
