1. Controlled Growth of a Line Defect in Graphene and Implications for Gate-Tunable Valley Filtering

Abstract

Atomically precise tailoring of graphene can enable unusual transport pathways and new nanometer-scale functional devices. Here we describe a recipe for the controlled production of highly regular "5-5-8" line defects in graphene by means of simultaneous electron irradiation and Joule heating by applied electric current. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals individual steps of the growth process. Extending earlier theoretical work suggesting valley-discriminating capabilities of a graphene 5-5-8 line defect, we perform first-principles calculations of transport and find a strong energy dependence of valley polarization of the charge carriers across the defect. These findings inspire us to propose a compact electrostatically gated "valley valve" device, a critical component for valleytronics.

Abstract

Here, by making use of medium and high resolution autocorrected off-axis electron holography, we directly probe the electrostatic potential as well as in-plane structural reconstruction at edges and steps in multilayer hexagonal boron nitride. In combination with ab initio calculations, the data allows revealing the formation of folded zigzag edges at steps comprising two monolayers and their absence at monolayer steps.

Abstract

The reduced dimensionality in two-dimensional materials leads to a wealth of unusual properties, which are currently explored for both fundamental and applied sciences. In order to study the crystal structure, edge states, the formation of defects and grain boundaries, or the impact of adsorbates, high-resolution microscopy techniques are indispensable. Here we report on the development of an electron holography (EH) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, which facilitates high spatial resolution by an automatic correction of geometric aberrations. Distinguished features of EH beyond conventional TEM imaging are gap-free spatial information signal transfer and higher dose efficiency for certain spatial frequency bands as well as direct access to the projected electrostatic potential of the two-dimensional material. We demonstrate these features with the example of h-BN, for which we measure the electrostatic potential as a function of layer number down to the monolayer limit and obtain evidence for a systematic increase of the potential at the zig-zag edges.

Abstract

The surprising message of Allen et al. (Allen et al. 1992 Phys. Rev. A 45, 8185 (doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.45.8185)) was that photons could possess orbital angular momentum in free space, which subsequently launched advancements in optical manipulation, microscopy, quantum optics, communications, many more fields. It has recently been shown that this result also applies to quantum mechanical wave functions describing massive particles (matter waves). This article discusses how electron wave functions can be imprinted with quantized phase vortices in analogous ways to twisted light, demonstrating that charged particles with non-zero rest mass can possess orbital angular momentum in free space. With Allen et al. as a bridge, connections are made between this recent work in electron vortex wave functions and much earlier works, extending a 175 year old tradition in matter wave vortices.This article is part of the themed issue 'Optical orbital angular momentum'.

22. The Production of Fungible Fuels from Biomass via Integrated Hydropyrolysis and Hydroconversion (IH2)

Abstract

Integrated hydropyrolysis and hydroconversion (IH2) is a new thermochemical conversion process which is being developed by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) for direct conversion of biomass to fungible fuels. In IH2 a first stage hydropyrolysis step, carried out in a hydrogen atmosphere at 14-35 bar with a catalyst, is followed directly by an integrated hydroconversion step. These two integrated steps directly produce a fungible gasoline and diesel hydrocarbon product with less than 1% oxygen from a variety of biomass feeds including wood and lemna. The C1-C3 gases from the hydroconversion step are directed to a steam reformer where all the H2 required by the process is made and then recycled back to the hydropyrolysis step. The process is very energy efficient because the hydropyrolysis and hydroconversion are quite exothermic and produce the steam required for the steam driven compressors and all the process steps are run at almost the same pressure. Because fungible hydrocarbon fuels are directly produced and no outside hydrogen is required, the IH2 technological solves all of the problems which have been barriers to the commercial adoption of conventional fast pyrolysis of biomass and the subsequent transportation and upgrading of acidic, low energy content, highly oxygenated pyrolysis oils. Initial economic analysis shows that the IH2 process is an economically attractive process which has the potential to produce gasoline and diesel at very competitive prices. The IH2 process also offers the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 90% based on an initial LCA(life cycle analysis) study. The IH2 process is in an early stage of development and roughly 3 years from commercialization.
