Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition that can trigger various diseases, one of which is a neurodegenerative or neurological disease. Lactoferrin is known to have multiple protective activities, one of which is antioxidant. This study aimed to determine the potential of lactoferrin bovine to decrease brain MDA levels in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats induced by hyperlipidemia. This study was an in vivo experimental study using 24 male SD rats divided into six groups: normal, negative control, positive control, low-dose bovine lactoferrin (LLF), intermediate-dose bovine lactoferrin (ILF), and high-dose bovine lactoferrin (HLF). The diet in the normal group was the standard diet, and the other groups were induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). The intervention for the positive control group was simvastatin. In contrast, LLF, ILF, and HLF groups were given bovine lactoferrin doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW, respectively. After seven weeks, all rats were necropsied, and their brains were taken to be tested for malondialdehyde (MDA) levels with an MDA assay kit using a spectrophotometer. Efforts to manage waste properly require active participation from the community in maintaining the preservation and sustainability of the earth. Over the past decade, various countries, including Indonesia, have adapted their waste management system to the zero-waste principle. This system applies the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in handling waste. Household waste generated by the people of the coastal area of Jakarta, especially the Kalibaru Village, Cilincing, has created a pile of garbage that has polluted the area. Community service programs in the form of education on waste management activities with this principle need to be carried out to increase public awareness of sustainably protecting the environment. The implementation of counseling activities is carried out by presenting "Zero waste" material with a "3R" approach with the lecture method, followed by a question-and-answer session, a quiz competition, and a competition to make multi-purpose stationery containers from cardboard and paper. Educational activities and craft-making contests are expected to increase the knowledge, understanding, and creativity of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) regarding waste management and to become ambassadors for change for others in their area.

Background and Purpose: Cotrimoxazole, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, has substantial resistance, especially in Indonesia, with its uropathogenic resistance reaching 67% in 2017. Although cotrimoxazole has been suggested to be co-administered with lactoferrin to enhance its antibacterial effectiveness and this practice has been widely adopted since the Covid-19 pandemic, the impact of lactoferrin on the pharmacokinetics of cotrimoxazole remains relatively unknown. This study aims to conduct a preliminary clinical investigation into the impact of lactoferrin supplementation on the pharmacokinetics of cotrimoxazole, focusing on the elimination rate and excretion of unchanged drug in urine. Experimental Approach: This study employed a blinded, cross-over, single-dose pharmacokinetics investigation, which included five healthy volunteers as participants. In the initial period, the first group received cotrimoxazole (80 mg trimethoprim and 400 mg sulfamethoxazole) along with a lactoferrin-containing supplement, while the second group only received cotrimoxazole. Subsequently, after a washout period, the conditions were reversed. Urine sampling was conducted at intervals from 0 to 24 hours post-medication, and drug levels in the urine were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Key Results: The population-based pharmacokinetic analysis revealed that the optimal model was the one-compartment model with first-order elimination and proportional residual error. Conclusion: The findings show that the administration of lactoferrin-containing supplements did not significantly influence the covariate model and, therefore, did not alter the pharmacokinetics parameter of cotrimoxazole in urine with a single administration, implying that lactoferrin did not cause drug interaction problems when given simultaneously.

Background: Hyperlipidemia is a condition that is characterized as an increase in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Lactoferrin is a protein that can serve as an antioxidant. This study aims to determine whether lactoferrin can reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Methods: This study used 24 Sprague–Dawley rat strains, which were divided into six groups: normal group; negative control; positive control; and dose groups 1, 2, and 3. The normal group was given standard feed, whereas the other group was given high cholesterol and fat. The positive control group and dose groups 1, 2, and 3 were given 1.5 mg/kg BW of simvastatin and 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of BW lactoferrin, respectively. After 6 weeks, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were measured. Results: This study showed that lactoferrin doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW could significantly reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels (p < 0.05). Lactoferrin could also significantly reduce activated Kupffer cell and steatosis area in the liver (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Lactoferrin can reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Thus, further research is needed to address the existing bias and confirm that lactoferrin can reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Background: One of the complications of obesity is an elevation in blood pressure which can increase the risk of hypertension. This study aimed to explore body mass index (BMI), a body shape index (ABSI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in predicting elevated blood pressure (BP). Methods: This study was conducted in a cross-sectional design on 215 medical students from October 2019 to September 2020. Respondents measured their own weight, height, waist circumference and BP. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve were analyzed using IBM SPSS v.23. Results: Of the 215 medical students who participated in this study, only 102 met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the students were female (n=71, 69.6%) with a mean age of 19.37 years, and normal blood pressure (n=90, 88.2%). Area under the ROC curve (AUC) of WHtR and ABSI were 0.774 (p-value= 0.002) and 0.766 (p-value= 0.003) respectively, which were still acceptable. However, the AUC of BMI (p-value=0.589) was 0.11, which was considered poor. Conclusion: The indicators of obesity can be used as a screening value for increased blood pressure in adults, with BMI being the weakest indicator compared to ABSI and WHtR. Further research is needed to examine ABSI and WHtR indicators as predictor of increased blood pressure in adults.

Viral gastroenteritis is a prevalent disease in children. Each year, around 111 million children suffer from viral gastroenteritis. Clinical features such as fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may result in severe cases requiring hospitalization. Current therapies of this disease are symptomatic therapies, which are focused on patient rehydration. Previous studies found that lactoferrin (LF) is a milk protein known to have antiviral potential, suggesting the possibility of utilizing it as an alternative therapy for viral gastroenteritis. This literature review aims to determine the potential effects of LF in treatment and prevention, thereby reducing the incidence and severity of viral gastroenteritis. A literature search for related articles published in the past 20 years was performed on PubMed, EBSCOhost, ProQuest and another source using the main keywords “lactoferrin, viral, and gastroenteritis”. There were 6 articles assessed in this review. Several clinical trials have shown that giving LF supplements could significantly reduce the duration and the severity of gastroenteritis, especially with high doses of LF (0.49-1 g). Therefore, the efficacy of LF in pediatric gastroenteritis worked in a dose-dependent manner. However, mixed results were reported in the clinical trials assessing the efficacy of LF against viral gastroenteritis, but this could be due to the low doses of LF used. In conclusion, LF could be used as a complementary treatment against pediatric gastroenteritis, but further studies using high LF doses against pediatric viral gastroenteritis need to be evaluated further.

Background Many studies have reported the presence of Positive Regulatory/Su(var)3-9, Enhancer-of-zeste and Trithorax Domain 2 (PRDM2) downregulation in cancer. However, its potential as a diagnostic biomarker is still unclear. Hence, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to address this issue. Introduction As of 2018, cancer has become the second leading cause of death worldwide. Thus, cancer control is exceptionally vital in reducing mortality. One such example is through early diagnosis of cancer using tumor biomarkers. Having a function as a tumor suppressor gene (TSG), PRDM2 has been linked with carcinogenesis in several solid tumor. This study aims to assess the relationship between PRDM2 downregulation and solid tumor, its relationship with clinicopathological data, and its potential as a diagnostic biomarker. This study also aims to evaluate the quality of the studies, data reliability and confidence in cumulative evidence. Materials & Methods A protocol of this study is registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) with the following registration number: CRD42019132156. PRISMA was used as a guideline to conduct this review. A comprehensive electronic search was performed from inception to June 2019 in Pubmed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, EBSCO and ScienceDirect. Objectives The CYP2B6 is one of the most polymorphic CYP genes in humans that has the potential to modify the pharmacological and toxicological responses to clinically important drugs such as antimalarial artemisinin and its derivatives. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of CYP2B6 polymorphisms in Timor malaria endemic area, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia where Artemisin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) has been used to treat uncomplicated malaria. Methods A total of 109 healthy subjects were participated in this study. CYP2B6*4, *6 and *9 polymorphisms were analyzed using PCR-RFLP to confirm the SNPs prevalence of 516G>T and 785A>G in exon 4 and 5. Results There were 96 subjects included in the analysis. In the exon 4 of CYP2B6 516G>T, the frequency of the T mutation was 37.5% (39/96), and the wildtype 27.1% (26/96). In the exon 5, CYP2B6 785A>G mutant was detected in 29.2% (28/96) of individuals, and the wildtype allele in 35.4% (34/96). The frequency of CYP2B6*9 (516G>T), CYP2B6*4 (785A>G) and CYP2B6*6 (516G>T and 785A>G) were 40.6%, 29.2% and 22.9%, respectively. The prevalence of these CYP2B6 gene polymorphisms in Timorian ethnic were higher than that in Malay, Han Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian populations. Conclusion The prevalence of these CYP2B6 516G>T and 785A>G polymorphisms in Timorian ethnic is higher than that in other populations. These polymorphisms may affect the metabolism of artemisinin and its derivatives.
