Abstract Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a recurrent and persistent mental illness. However, there is a lack of research that distinguishes the severity of comorbid anxiety disorders in MDD, and insufficient evidence exists regarding the prevalence of MDD patients with comorbid moderate-to-severe anxiety in the Chinese population. Methods The study included 1718 MDD patients (894 with moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms and 824 without moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms). Clinical symptoms and development were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale-14 (HAMA-14), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and Clinical Global Impression (CGI). The blood pressure and thyroid hormone levels were measured. Results We found that the incidence of MDD patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms was 52.04%. The prevalence of recent suicide attempts in MDD comorbid moderate-to-severe anxiety patients was 31.8%, which was 4.24 times higher than that in patients without moderate-to-severe anxiety. Additionally, suicide attempters had elevated levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-thyroglobulin (TgAb), thyroid peroxidases antibody (TPOAb), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) compared to non-suicide attempters. We further identified CGI score, TSH, TPOAb, and DBP as influential factors for recent suicide attempts in MDD individuals who had moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms. These indexes could distinguish between suicide attempts and non-suicide attempts in MDD patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms. Conclusions Our findings mainly indicated a high prevalence of recent suicide attempts in MDD patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety. Several clinical correlates, thyroid hormones, and blood pressure might contribute to recent suicide attempts in MDD patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms.

Abstract Background To investigate the association between serum branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) levels and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women. Methods 1:1 matched case–control study was conducted including 66 GDM patients and 66 matched healthy pregnant women (± 3 years) in 2019, in China. Fasting bloods of pregnant women were collected in pregnancy at 24 ~ 28 weeks gestation. And the serum levels of valine (Val), leucine (Leu), isoleucine (Ile) and mTOR were determined. Abstract As an alternative to antibiotics in response to antimicrobial-resistant infections, bacteriophages (phages) are garnering renewed interest in recent years. However, the massive preparation of phage is restricted using traditional pathogens as host cells, which incurs additional costs and contamination. In this study, an opportunistic pathogen, Klebsiella pneumoniae used to convert glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), was reused to prepare phage after fermentation. The phage infection showed that the fed-batch fermentation broth containing 71.6 g/L 1,3-PDO can be directly used for preparation of phage with a titer of 1 × 108 pfu/mL. Then, the two-step salting-out extraction was adopted to remove most impurities, e.g. acetic acid (93.5%), ethanol (91.5%) and cells (99.4%) at the first step, and obtain 1,3-PDO (56.6%) in the top phase as well as phage (97.4%) in the middle phase at the second step. This integrated process provides a cheap and environment-friendly manner for coproduction of 1,3-PDO and phage. Graphical abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with lysophospholipids-butyrate (LPB) in a high plant protein diet on the growth performance, liver health, and intestinal morphology of Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Three experimental diets were formulated: a positive control diet (PC) containing 15.00 % soybean meal (SBM) and 13 % chicken meal；a high-plant-protein diet (HPP) with 28.00 % SBM; a diet (LPB) supplemented LPB at 0.1 % in HPP. Largemouth bass with an average initial body weight of 9.3 g were fed for 60 days, with 4 replicates per group and 20 fish per replicate. The results demonstrated that the HPP group exhibited significantly lower final body weight (FBW), weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) compared to the PC group. Moreover, the HPP diet induced a notable increase in liver collagen fiber and liver lipid content, which was alleviated by LPB supplementation. In comparison to the HPP group, the LPB group showed significant increases in serum albumin and albumin/globulin, along with a significant decrease in alanine aminotransferase activity (P < 0.05). Compared with the PC group, the mRNA levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase-1 (ACC-1), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in HPP group were increased significantly (P < 0.05), while adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) as well as apoptotic gene B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) were significantly down-regulated. The mRNA levels of fatty acid synthase (FAS), ACC-1, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), ATGL, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and Bcl-2 were up-regulated (P < 0.05), while DGAT and TNF-α were down-regulated in the LPB supplemented groups than that in the HPP group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation of 0.1 % LPB can alleviate liver lipid accumulation and fibrosis caused by high level of soybean meal.

To address the situation that the degraded system cannot be repaired as new and the degradation is accelerated after repair in engineering practice, an imperfect condition-based maintenance model is proposed based on the Gamma process by introducing the maintenance improvement factor and the accelerated degradation factor. The maintenance improvement factor describes the recovery degree of the degradation amount after imperfect maintenance, then gives a quantitative representation method of the system maintenance improvement effect and the determination method of the maximum number of imperfect maintenance. The accelerated degradation factor is combined with the geometric process to describe the accelerated degradation process of the system after imperfect maintenance. The Monte Carlo method is used to determine the optimal number of imperfect preventive maintenance decisions. Through the demonstration of calculation examples, the influence of accelerated degradation factor and maintenance improvement factor on the long-term operation maintenance rate and the optimal number of imperfect maintenance is analyzed. The results show that the model can more comprehensively describe the degradation and maintenance process of degraded systems, and it can effectively reduce maintenance cost ratio under long-term operation. It provides a certain theoretical support for formulating an economical and reasonable maintenance strategy that is more in line with the actual degradation and maintenance process in engineering practice.

This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of dietary lysophospholipids combined with 1% dietary fish oil reduction on the growth performance and hepatic lipid metabolism of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Five isonitrogenous feeds were prepared with lysophospholipids at 0% (fish oil group, FO), 0.05% (L-0.05), 0.1% (L-0.1), 0.15% (L-0.15) and 0.2% (L-0.2), respectively. The dietary lipid was 11% in the FO diet and 10% in the other diets. Largemouth bass were fed for 68 d (initial body weight = 6.04 ± 0.01 g) with 4 replicates per group and 30 fish per replicate. In this paper, the effects of laser heat input on the microstructures, tensile strength, and fatigue properties of Ti60 laser welded joints were investigated. The results show that with the increase in laser heat input, the macro morphology of the weld zone (WZ) changes from the Y-type to X-type. In the Y-type WZ, the porosity defects are almost eliminated. In contrast, there are a lot of porosity defects in the lower part of the X-type WZ. The microstructure of the base metal (BM) comprises equiaxed α phases, and β phases are mainly distributed at the boundaries of α phases. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) is comprised of α phases and acicular α′ phases, while the WZ mainly contains acicular α′ phases. With the increase in laser heat input, the quantity of the α phase gradually decreases and the acicular α′ phase gradually increases in the HAZ, and the size of the acicular α′ phase in the WZ gradually decreases. Due to the different microstructures, the hardness of BM is lower than the HAZ and WZ under different laser heat input conditions. In the tensile tests and low-cycle fatigue tests, the welded joints are fractured in BM. The porosity defects do not have decisive effects on the tensile and low-cycle fatigue properties of Ti60 laser welded joints.

PurposeWe aimed to explore the relationship between thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) and suicidal and aggressive behaviors in patients with major mental disorders.MethodsWe enrolled 812 inpatients with major mental disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder) in this retrospective study. Baseline interviews were conducted by two psychiatrists. The patients’ suicidal and aggressive behaviors were recorded in the electronic medical record system and these patients were evaluated in terms of violence and suicide behaviors according to the risk assessment form formulated in the Work Code for the Management and Treatment of Severe Mental Illness by the Ministry of Health of China. We calculated the incidence rates of positive TPO-Ab, the suicidal and aggressive behaviors. Furthermore, we explored the relationships among risk factors for suicidal and aggressive behaviors using logistics regression analysis.ResultsAmong the 812 patients, 42.6% (n = 346) had TPO-Abs and were defined as the positive group. Rates of suicide and aggression among the enrolled patients were 12.7% (n = 103) and 10.2% (n = 83) respectively. The percentage of patients with aggressive behaviors (13%, n = 45) was higher than that in the negative group (8.2%, n = 38). In contrast, the incidence (9.5%) of suicidal behaviors in the positive group was lower than that (15.0%) in the negative group. TPO-Ab was found to increase the risk of aggressive behavior (odd ratio (OR) = 1.64, 95%CI (1.04, 2.59), P = 0.03) and this effect was still evident after we adjusted for thyroid function (OR = 1.65, 95%CI (1.03, 2.64), P = 0.04). Furthermore, subclinical hypothyroidism (OR = 2.64, 95%CI (1.19, 5.85), P = 0.02) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (OR = 7.03, 95%CI (2.23, 22.20), P = 0.001) were found to be risk factors of aggressive behavior but not for suicide behaviors.ConclusionTPO-Abs can affect aggressive behavior but do not affect suicidal behaviors, in patients with major mental disorders. Thus, antibody testing is necessary for psychiatric patients with aggressive behavior. The TPO-Ab test helped the psychiatric staff to determine aggressive behavior in advance.

Purpose: Delirium is a serious neuropsychiatric syndrome, which can lead to poor outcomes, especially among patients with critical illness, but is easily missed among psychiatric patients. Some delirium-associated risks have been confirmed for critical patients and psychiatric patients. Nevertheless, the research about delirium in psychiatric patients with critical illness is rare. Methods: This study aims to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of delirium in psychiatric patients with critical illness. We assessed 425 patients diagnosed with critical illness from Shenzhen Kangning hospital from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021, and registered their demographic information, medical history and comorbidities. Patients underwent a psychiatric examination using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). Results: Among the 425 critical illness inpatients, 143 had delirium (prevalence of 33.6%). The most common associations were infectious disease (46.9%), electrolyte disturbance (48.3%), cerebrovascular disease (39.9%), and liver or kidney dysfunction (26.6%). Abstract Objective Facial expressions have been served as clinical symptoms to convey mental conditions in psychiatry. This paper proposes to recognize patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) using their facial images based on deep learning algorithm, and to investigate objective differences in facial expressions between SCZ patients and healthy controls using deep learning algorithm and statistical analyses. Methods The study consists of two parts. The first part recruited 106 SCZ patients and 101 healthy controls, and videotaped their facial expressions through a fixed experimental paradigm. The video data were randomly divided into two sets, one for training a convolutional neural network (CNN) with the classification of “healthy control” or “SCZ patient” as output and the other for evaluating the classification result of the trained CNN. In the second part, all facial images of the recruited participants were put into another CNN separately, which was priorly trained with a facial expression database and will output the most likely facial expressions of the recruited participants. Statistical analyses were performed on the obtained facial expressions to find out the objective differences in facial expressions between the two recruited groups. β-glucan is widely used in aquaculture due to its immunostimulatory effects, but the specific effect and potential regulatory mechanism on largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are still unclear. Here, we evaluated the effects of β-glucan on growth, resistance to Aeromonas schubertii, intestinal health, and transcriptome of largemouth bass to reveal the potential regulators, metabolic pathways, and altered differential microbiota. Four experimental diets were designed with β-glucan supplementation levels of 0 (control), 100 (LA-100), 200 (MA-200), and 300 (HA-300) mg kg-1, and each diet was fed to largemouth bass (79.30 ± 0.50 g) in triplicate for 70 days, followed by a 3-day challenge experiment. Results showed that different β-glucan supplementations had no significant effects on growth performance and whole-body composition. Fish fed a diet with 300 mg kg-1 β-glucan significantly increased the activity of lysozyme than those fed diets with 0 and 100 mg kg-1 β-glucan. In addition, the survival rate of largemouth bass in β-glucan supplementation groups was significantly higher than the control group at 12- and 24-h challenge by Aeromonas schubertii. Transcriptome analysis showed that a total of 1,245 genes were differentially expressed [|log2(fold change)| ≥1, q-value ≤0.05], including 109 immune-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Further analysis revealed that significantly upregulated and downregulated DEGs associated with immunity were mapped into 12 and 24 pathways, respectively. Results of intestinal microflora indicated that fish fed a diet with 300 mg kg-1 β-glucan had higher bacterial richness and diversity as evaluated by Sobs, Chao, Ace, and Simpson indices, but no significant differences were found in the comparison groups. Furthermore, 300 mg kg-1 β-glucan significantly increased the relative abundance of Mycoplasma and decreased Proteobacteria (mainly Escherichia-Shigella and Escherichia coli) and Bacillus anthracis in largemouth bass intestinal microflora. The findings of this study provided new insights that will be valuable in future studies to elucidate the mechanism of immunity enhancement by β-glucan.

Abstract Background A diagnosis of dementia in middle-aged and elder people is often complicated by physical frailty and comorbid neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs). Previous studies have identified NPSs as a risk factor for dementia. The aim of this study was to figure out to what extent individual NPS and certain demographic factors increased the risk of dementia in middle-aged and senior psychiatric inpatients. Methods One hundred twenty-seven middle-aged and senior patients admitted to psychiatric wards for late-onset (age ≥ 50 years) psychiatric symptoms were included and categorized into dementia or non-demented psychiatric disorders (NDPD). The patients’ demographic information and medical records were collected during the first hospitalization and subjected to statistical analyses. Results 41.73% of the registered psychiatric inpatients were diagnosed as dementia in which Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was the dominant subtype. The NDPD group consisted of nine individual diagnoses, except for schizophrenia. The frequencies of dementia inpatients increased with first episode age while that of NDPD inpatients decreased with first episode age. In the enrolled inpatients, most of dementia patients were males while females accounted for a higher proportion of NDPD patients. 58.49% of enrolled dementia inpatients presented cognitive deficit (CD) as the initial symptom while the remaining 41.51% showed NPS as initial symptom. Of the 12 NPSs, agitation and apathy greatly and significantly increased risk of dementia in psychiatric inpatients with late-onset psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions These results added evidence that the demented patients admitted to psychiatric ward are more likely to be male, older first episode age, and have characteristic NPS including aberrant motor behavior (AMB), hallucinations, agitation, irritability and apathy. Further, this study emphasized the importance of agitation and apathy of NPSs functioning as risk factors of dementia in these inpatients.

Objectives: To evaluate the associations of status, amount, and frequency of alcohol consumption across different alcoholic beverages with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) risk and associated mortality.Methods: This study included 473,957 subjects, 16,559 of whom tested positive for COVID-19. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the associations of alcohol consumption with COVID-19 risk and associated mortality. The non-linearity association between the amount of alcohol consumption and COVID-19 risk was evaluated by a generalized additive model.Results: Subjects who consumed alcohol double above the guidelines had a higher risk of COVID-19 (1.12 [1.00, 1.25]). Consumption of red wine above or double above the guidelines played protective effects against the COVID-19. Consumption of beer and cider increased the COVID-19 risk, regardless of the frequency and amount of alcohol intake. Low-frequency of consumption of fortified wine (1–2 glasses/week) within guidelines had a protective effect against the COVID-19. High frequency of consumption of spirits (≥5 glasses/week) within guidelines increased the COVID-19 risk, whereas the high frequency of consumption of white wine and champagne above the guidelines decreased the COVID-19 risk. The generalized additive model showed an increased risk of COVID-19 with a greater number of alcohol consumption. Alcohol drinker status, frequency, amount, and subtypes of alcoholic beverages were not associated with COVID-19 associated mortality.Conclusions: The COVID-19 risk appears to vary across different alcoholic beverage subtypes, frequency, and amount. Red wine, white wine, and champagne have chances to reduce the risk of COVID-19. Consumption of beer and cider and spirits and heavy drinking are not recommended during the epidemics. Public health guidance should focus on reducing the risk of COVID-19 by advocating healthy lifestyle habits and preferential policies among consumers of beer and cider and spirits.

With the rapid development of data mining and machine-learning technology and the outbreak of big sports data mining development challenges, sports data mining cannot simply use data statistical methods such as how to combine machine learning and data mining technology for effective mining and analysis of sports data, to provide useful advice for public physical exercise, and this is an urgent need to study. It is a kind of efficient sports data mining study through the feature selection algorithm. Around the difficult problems existing in the study of sports effect, given the limitations of existing data sets and traditional research methods, this paper starts from the data mining algorithm, builds the sports effect evaluation database, based on feature selection idea, using elastic network algorithm, random forest algorithm, and the influence of sports on the effect of physical indicators. The evaluation algorithm introduces machine learning algorithm and feature selection algorithm to guide the sports effect evaluation research. When studying the evaluation problem of sports effect, according to the constructed sports effect evaluation database, elastic network algorithm is added to regularize, optimize, and realize feature selection. When selecting the characteristics of different sports ability, using information gains indicators to rank the importance of characteristics, which can scientifically and accurately obtain the influence degree of sports on different physical indicators, make the physical fitness research more scientific, and can reveal the effect of sports as far as possible. Experimental results show that the selected features and ground-truth have good accuracy, good evaluation performance, and high accuracy compared with the baseline method.

Atherosclerosis is a potentially life-threatening cardiovascular disease characterized by chronic endothelial inflammation and the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Circulating ox-LDL is known to induce atherosclerosis by triggering oxidative stress, the expression of inflammatory mediators and adhesion molecules, as well as downregulating the atheroprotective transcriptional factor KLF2. Aloperine is an alkaloid compound isolated from the plant Sophora alopecuroides. Here, we employed various experimental methods to determine the effects of aloperine on ox-LDL-induced markers of atherosclerosis. DHE staining revealed that aloperine may restore the oxidant/antioxidant balance in HUVECs by reducing the level of ROS and rescuing the reduction in NOQ-1 and GCLC induced by ox-LDL. Aloperine treatment reduced ox-LDL-induced expression of IL-6, MCP-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin and rescued the reduction in KLF2. Aloperine also downregulated ox-LDL-induced expression of the LOX-1. We also demonstrate that aloperine improved cell viability and inhibited the adhesion of U937 monocytes to HUVECs. Finally, we demonstrate that the effects of aloperine are mediated through the rescue of KLF2 expression via suppression of the phosphorylation of p53 protein. Together, our results implicate the potential of aloperine as a safe and effective antiatherosclerosis treatment.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a respiratory disease of unknown origin, has a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Individuals with mental disorders may have a higher risk of infection and worse clinical outcomes because of a variety of factors such as poorer general resilience and lower immune function. However, there have been no studies to date specifically investigating the risk of COVID-19 and associated mortality in these patients. This was addressed in the present study by analyzing the data of 473,958 subjects included in the UK Biobank, 14,877 of whom tested positive for COVID-19 infection. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the associations between mental disorders and risks of COVID-19 infection and associated mortality. The results showed that subjects who were diagnosed with a mental disorder had a significantly higher risk of developing COVID-19 and a worse outcome as evidenced by higher rates of COVID-19-related mortality, with the strongest effects observed for dementia. Among dementia subtypes, Alzheimer disease patients had the highest risks of COVID-19 infection (7.39-fold increase) and associated mortality (2.13-fold increase). Late-life anxiety only increased the risk of developing COVID-19 while late-life depression not only was associated with a higher risk of infection but also a worse outcome. These findings highlight the need to prioritize patients with mental disorders-especially those who experience these disorders later in life—when implementing preventive strategies such as vaccinations.

This study compares five types of lamb jerky, namely, CO (without starter culture), PL-4 (with producing putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, and tyramine), BL4-8 (degrading putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, and tyramine), CL4-3 (degrading putrescine and tyramine), and X3-2B (degrading histamine and tyramine). A study was performed to examine the effects of starter culture on the physical–chemical quality, flavor, and biogenic amines (BAs) during fermentation and ripening. At the end of fermentation, the pH value of the BL4-8 group (4.75) was significantly lower than that of other groups (p < 0.05). After high-temperature roasting, the water activity (0.55), water content (22.6%), nitrite residue (0.41 mg/kg), and TBARS value (0.27 mg/100 g) of the X3-2B group were significantly lower than those of other groups (p < 0.05). The findings show that adding starter BL4-8, CL4-3, and X3-2B can increase the variety and content of flavor in the product. The levels of histamine, putrescine, and tyramine were significantly lower in the BL4-8, CL4-3, and X3-2B groups than in CO and PL-4 groups. This study shows that BL4-8, CL4-3, and X3-2B are potential starters for fermented meat products.

The diffuse optical tomography (DOT) technique which uses the traditional linear iterative algorithm has the problems of slow calculation speed and low reconstruction imaging accuracy in the inverse problem reconstruction, which limits its clinical application and development. This paper proposes an inverse-problem solving technology based on a stacked auto-encoder (SAE) network to improve the reconstruction accuracy of anomaly position, size and absorption coefficient in tissues. The reconstruction accuracy of anomaly position, size and absorption coefficient obtained by the traditional algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) method and the SAE based method are experimentally compared. The experimental results show that the SAE based method achieves the prediction accuracy of anomaly position of 96.25%, thus improving the accuracy and shortening the reconstruction time compared with the traditional ART method. Accordingly, the proposed method provides a better solution to the problem of the inaccurate reconstruction of the position and size of the rapid DOT based positioning of anomalies.

Abstract. We investigated the reproductive ecology of Sichuan digging frogs (Microhylidae: Kaloula rugifera) in Mianyang, China during the wet season of 2013. Male Sichuan digging frogs first appear at temporary ponds following the first heavy rain of the wet season and initiate calling. Females arrive at ponds shortly after males. Male frogs chorus extensively throughout the wet season during the evenings and nights following rainstorms. Female frogs leave the pond after laying eggs, and likely only lay one clutch annually. Amplexus lasted up to three hours. Females were larger than males in terms of body size, but we found no evidence of size-assortative mating. Clutch size varied from 920 to 2200 eggs, with egg diameter ranging from 1.33 to 1.93 mm. Larger female frogs laid more eggs, and there was no correlation between egg number and egg size. Tadpoles hatched from eggs within 18-20 hours of oviposition, and grew for 30-40 days before complete metamorphosis occurred. The initial body length of tadpoles ranged from 3-5 mm snout-vent length. Growth was fastest immediately after hatching, and declined asymptotically with increasing tadpole body size. Overall, Sichuan digging frogs have a breeding biology characterized by strong male-male competition with prolonged breeding coinciding with the annual wet season. Keywords. Rana kukunoris is endemic to the eastern Tibetan plateau and its breeding ecology was not known so far. In this study, we investigated the reproductive output patterns of the species during the breeding periods of 2012 and 2013. Our results showed that clutch size and total clutch volume increased with maternal body size. However, no significant correlation between egg number and egg size was observed, which suggested that the tradeoff between offspring number and size in this species was lack.

The occurrence of pruritus in psoriasis was previously underestimated but is a significant burden. Secukinumab (SEC), a monoclonal anti-interleukin-17A antibody, efficiently controls signs of psoriasis, but the effect on pruritus and cutaneous neuroanatomy remained unknown. The primary objective of this study (NCT02362789) was to evaluate the superiority of SEC treatment vs placebo on pruritus intensity (visual analogue scale; VAS). Furthermore, the treatment-dependent course of pruritus in association with absolute Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score, as well as cutaneous histopathology and neuroanatomy, was assessed. Open-label SEC 300 mg s.c. was administered regularly until week 16. Patients who reached a ≥ 98% PASI reduction (PASI ≥ 98) were randomized to receive either placebo or SEC up to week 32. Punch biopsies were collected from lesional psoriatic (baseline, weeks 16 and 32) and non-lesional (baseline) skin for histopathological and neuroanatomical analyses. VAS scores improved significantly after open-label SEC treatment but relapsed upon placebo (29.92 ± 33.8) compared with SEC (12.30 ± 22.6; p = 0.036). After SEC-dependent improvement in PASI, histopathology, marker expression and neuroanatomy, relapse was observed with treatment discontinuation in all parameters except neuroanatomy. SEC was superior to placebo by efficiently controlling reduced pruritus intensity, clinically normalizing skin lesions, and reversing histopathological abnormalities. The neuroanatomy recovered upon SEC and remained stable even after withdrawal.
