The objective of this review is to evaluate the effects of CIMs on the HRQOL of cancer patients. We identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with cancer at any stage by retrieving electronic databases from the inception to February 14, 2018 (Systematic Review Registration: PROSPERO CRD42018091609). The main outcomes were HRQOL scores and related domains such as physical well-being scores. The standardized mean difference was used for the analysis and heterogeneity was assessed with the I2, statistic. A Bayesian framework was used to estimate the ranking order of efficacy in HRQOL change. Finally, 34 RCTs with 3,010 patients were included. As a whole, the results showed clearly superior efficacy of CIM in improving HRQOL. For different domains of HRQOL, different CIM interventions may play different roles. The ranking order of efficacy in change HRQOL was qigong plus mindfulness, Chinese herbal medicine, multimodal complementary medicine, qigong, nutritional supplement, mindfulness, acupuncture, yoga, and massage, and it was different among different domains. There was no evidence of publication bias. In conclusion, CIM may improve the HRQOL of cancer patients. More studies, especially focusing on male cancer patients, are needed to increase the confidence level of our findings.Keywords: complementary medicine, alternative medicine, integrative medicine, health-related quality of life, randomized controlled trials

Efficient, durable, and economical electrocatalysts are crucial for advancing energy technology by facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, ultrathin Ni-Fe metal-organic skeleton (MOF) nanosheets were created in situ on nickel foam (NiFe-UMNs/NF). The catalyst exhibited excellent OER catalytical abilities, with only 269 mV overpotentials at 250 mA cm -2 . Besides, when integrated with Pt/C/NF, NiFe-UMNs/NF held the potential for application in industrial alkaline water electrolysis with an initial voltage retention of approximately 86% following a continuous operation of 100 h at a current density of 250 mA cm -2 . The super performance of the NiFe-UMNs/NF catalyst was attributed to ultrathin morphology, super hydrophilicity, and synergistic effects between Ni and Fe within the MOF. In situ Raman showed that NiFe-UMNs were converted to NiFeOOH as the active species in the OER process. Density functional theory revealed that iron doping accelerated the rate-determining step and reduced the OER reaction energy barrier. This work elucidated a promising electrocatalyst for OER and enriched the practical implementation of MOF materials.

Reading is vital for acquiring knowledge and studies have demonstrated that phonology-focused interventions generally yield greater improvements than meaning-focused interventions in English among children with reading disabilities. However, the effectiveness of reading instruction can vary among individuals. Among the various factors that impact reading skills like reading exposure and oral language skills, reading instruction is critical in facilitating children's development into skilled readers; it can significantly influence reading strategies, and contribute to individual differences in reading. To investigate this assumption, we developed a computational model of reading with an optimised MikeNet simulator. In keeping with educational practices, the model underwent training with three different instructional methods: phonology-focused training, meaning-focused training, and phonology-meaning balanced training. We used semantic reliance (SR), a measure of the relative reliance on print-to-sound and print-to-meaning mappings under the different training conditions in the model, as an indicator of individual differences in reading. The simulation results demonstrated a direct link between SR levels and the type of reading instruction. Additionally, the SR scores were able to predict model performance in reading-aloud tasks: higher SR scores were correlated with increased phonological errors and reduced phonological activation. The widespread application of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) is hampered by insufficient lifetime caused by degradation of the anode catalyst layer (ACL). Here, an important degradation mechanism has been identified, attributed to poor mechanical stability causing the mass transfer channels to be blocked by ionomers under operating conditions. By using liquid-phase atomic force microscopy, we directly observed that the ionomers were randomly distributed (RD) in the ACL, which occupied the mass transfer channels due to swelling, creeping, and migration properties. Interestingly, we found that alternating treatments of the ACL in different water/temperature environments resulted in forming three-dimensional ionomer networks (3D INs) in the ACL, which increased the mechanical strength of microstructures by 3 times. Benefitting from the efficient and stable mass transfer channels, the lifetime was improved by 19 times. A low degradation rate of approximately 3.0 μV/h at 80 °C and a high current density of 2.0 A/cm 2 was achieved on a 50 cm 2 electrolyzer. These data demonstrated a forecasted lifetime of 80 000 h, approaching the 2026 DOE lifetime target. This work emphasizes the importance of the mechanical stability of the ACL and offers a general strategy for designing and developing a durable PEMWE.

The proportion and area of ratoon rice planting in China have been substantially increased, due to continuous improvement of rice breeding methods and consecutive innovation of cultivation technology, which has developed into one of rice planting modes with significant production efficiency. Combining the experience in research and practice, from the perspective of crop physiology and ecology, we reviewed the current situation and prospects of high-yielding formation and physiological mechanisms of ratoon rice. We focused on four key aspects: screening and breeding of ratoon rice cultivars and the classification; suitable stubble height for mechanically harvested ratoon rice, as well as water and fertilizer management; dry matter production and allocation in ratoon rice and the relationship with yield formation; regenerative activity and vigor of ratoon rice roots and their relationship with rhizosphere micro-ecological characteristics. As for the extending of mechanized low-cut stubbles ratoon rice technique, we should properly regulate the rhizosphere system, coordinate rhizosphere nutrient supply, germination of axillary buds, and tillering regeneration, to achieve the target of "four-high-one-low", that is high regeneration coefficient, high number of regeneration panicle, high harvest index, high yield, high quality, low-carbon and safe, aiming to improve the sustainability of ratoon rice industry.

Developing catalytic materials with highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for lower-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis cell (SOEC) technologies. In this work, a novel triple perovskite material, Nd 0.5 Ba 0.5 Co 1/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 3-δ , has been developed and employed as a catalyst for both ORR and OER in SOFC and SOEC operations at relatively lower temperatures, showing a low polarization resistance of 0.327 Ω cm 2 , high-power output of SOFC up to 773 mW cm -2 at 650 °C, and a high current density of 1.57 A cm -2 from SOEC operation at 1.5 V at 600 °C. The relaxation time distribution reveals that Nd 0.5 Ba 0.5 Co 1/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 3-δ could maintain a slow polarization process at the relatively low operating temperature, offering a significant antipolarization advantage over other perovskite electrode materials. The Nd 0.5 Ba 0.5 Co 1/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 3-δ electrode provides a low energy barrier of about 0.36 eV in oxygen ion mobility, which is beneficent for oxygen reduction/evolution reaction processes.

Three new phlegmaciod species of Thaxterogaster , T. borealicremeolinus , T. rufopurpureus , and T. sinopurpurascens spp. nov., from subtropical China were described based on their morphological characteristics and molecular data. Thaxterogaster borealicremeolinus belongs to the sect. Cremeolinae and differs from the other species in this section in its larger basidiospores and its habitat in the Northern Hemisphere associated with Quercus sp. trees. Thaxterogaster rufopurpureus and T. sinopurpurascens belong to sect. Purpurascentes , in which T. rufopurpureus is characterized by a pileus with a reddish-brown coloration when mature and a clavate stipe, while T. sinopurpurascens is characterized by a violet basidiomata, except for a greyish orange to brown pileus, the distinctly marginate bulb of its stipe, and its distribution in subtropical China. The phylogenetic analyses were performed based on nrITS, and detailed descriptions of the new species are provided herein.

Having a highly-conductive protonic electrolyte is an essential requirement of developing solid ceramic fuel cell (SCFC) operated below 600 °C. Proton transport in solid electrolyte structure occurs via a bulk conduction mechanism in conventional SCFC, which may not be so efficient; therefore we have developed a fast proton conducting NaAlO 2 /LiAlO 2 (NAO-LAO) heterostructure electrolyte, achieving the ionic conductivity of 0.23 S cm -1 thanks to its rich cross-linked solid-liquid interfaces; the SCFC employing this new developed electrolyte showed a maximum power density of 844 mW cm -2 at 550 °C, and the fuel cell could still operate at even lower temperatures down to 370 °C, although the output reduced to 90 mW cm -2 . The proton-hydration liquid layer promoted the formation of cross-linked solid-liquid interfaces in the NAO-LAO electrolyte, which promoted the construction of solid-liquid hybrid proton transportation channels and effectively reduced polarization loss, leading to high proton conduction at even lower temperatures. β ″ -Al 2 O 3 has been proven as a fast ionic conductor in solid batteries due to its unique structure. In this work, β ″ -Al 2 O 3 was further modified by LiAlO 2 and employed as the electrolyte material for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells and electrolyzers, i.e., proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells and electrolysis cells, named as PCFC and PCEC, respectively. At 550 °C, thanks to this superior electrolyte with a remarkable conductivity of 0.161 S·cm -1 , the PCFC reached a high power density up to 1029 mW·cm -2 , and the PCEC demonstrated a significant current density of 1.49 A·cm -2 at a low operation voltage of 2.0 V. It has been found that the introduction of the LiAlO 2 phase into β ″ -Al 2 O 3 reduces the total impedance, while it increases the oxygen vacancy concentration and thus promotes the proton transport process with the reduced activation energy. This work provides a new approach for exploring two-dimensional materials with high-ionic conductivity that can be applied for solid oxide fuel cells and water electrolyzers and more wider power-to-X devices such as electrosynthesis for green ammonia production.

Background: CpxAR is a two-component system that allows bacteria to reorganize envelope structures in response to extracellular stimuli. CpxAR negatively affects type 1 fimbriae expression in Klebsiella pneumoniae CG43, a hypervirulent strain. The involvement of CpxAR in the regulation of type 3 fimbriae expression was investigated., Methods: cpxAR, cpxA, and cpxR gene-specific deletion mutants were generated. The deletion effects on the expression of type 1 and type 3 fimbriae were analyzed via measuring the promoter activity, mannose sensitive yeast agglutination activity, biofilm formation, and the production of the major pilins FimA and MrkA respectively. RNA sequencing analysis of CG43S3, ΔcpxAR, ΔcpxR and Δfur was employed to study the regulatory mechanism influencing the expression of type 3 fimbriae., Results: Deletion of cpxAR increased type 1 and type 3 fimbrial expression. Comparative transcriptomic analysis showed that the expression of oxidative stress-responsive enzymes, type 1 and type 3 fimbriae, and iron acquisition and homeostasis control systems were differentially affected by cpxAR or cpxR deletion. Subsequent analysis revealed that the small RNA RyhB negatively affects the expression of type 3 fimbriae, while CpxAR positively controls ryhB expression. Finally, the site-directed mutation of the predicted interacting sequences of RyhB with the mRNA of MrkA attenuated the RyhB repression of type 3 fimbriae., Conclusion: CpxAR negatively regulates the expression of type 3 fimbriae by modulating cellular iron levels thereafter activating the expression of RyhB. Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy for cancer has achieved great success both in clinical results and on the market. At the same time, success drives more attention from scientists to improve it. However, only a small portion of patients are responsive to this therapy, and it comes with a unique spectrum of side effects termed immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The use of nanotechnology could improve ICBs' delivery to the tumor, assist them in penetrating deeper into tumor tissues and alleviate their irAEs. Liposomal nanomedicine has been investigated and used for decades, and is well-recognized as the most successful nano-drug delivery system. The successful combination of ICB with liposomal nanomedicine could help improve the efficacy of ICB therapy. Cantharellus , one of the main genera of Hydnaceae (Cantharellales), is both ecologically and economically important. Although many studies have focused on this genus in China, the taxonomy should be further updated. In the present study, Cantharellus subgenera Afrocantharellus and Magni were investigated based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses with new collections from China. Five phylogenetic species were recognized among the studied collections, three of which were described as new: C. bellus , C . cineraceus , and C. laevigatus ; one was previously described taxon: C. hygrophoroides ; and the remaining species was not defined due to the paucity of the materials. Among the four described species, both C. bellus and C. laevigatus are members of subgen. Magni , whereas C. cineraceus and C. hygrophoroides belong to subgen. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is directly relevant to green hydrogen production from water splitting. Recently, a low-cost Ni 5 P 4 material has been demonstrated experimentally and theoretically to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity toward HER. However, a fundamental understanding of the origin of Ni 5 P 4 (0001) activity is still lacking. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed for a comprehensive investigation. The calculation results indicate that the Ni 5 P 4 (0001) surface exposing Ni 3 P 4 termination gains the highest stability, on which a nearly thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption was found at the P 3 -hollow sites, providing a high activity for HER. The activity was also observed to be maintained over a wide H-coverage. HER occurs via the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism as evidenced from the optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy, but unlikely through the Tafel reaction due to its large energy barrier. Furthermore, the P 3 -hollow sites also exhibit a low kinetic barrier for water dissociation, promoting HER in alkaline media. A series of electronic structure analyses were performed in gaining insights into the origin of the HER activity. First, the density of states (DOS) and crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analyses revealed a favorable interaction of electronic states between P and H atoms, leading to stable H adsorption at P 3 -hollow sites. In addition, the Bader charge analysis demonstrates that the strength of H adsorption at P 3 -hollow sites linearly increases with the electrons carried by the latter. The optimal net charge on the P 3 -hollow sites leads to a desired Δ G H that is close-to-zero. Finally, a highly efficient electron transfer was observed between the P 3 -hollow sites and their neighboring atoms, facilitating the HER., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. Antiaromaticity is extended from aromaticity as a complement to describe the unsaturated cyclic molecules with antiaromatic destabilization. To prepare antiaromatic species is a particularly challenging goal in synthetic chemistry because of the thermodynamic instability of such molecules. Among that, both Hückel and Möbius antiaromatic species have been reported, whereas the Craig one has not been realized to date. Here, we report the first example of planar Craig antiaromatic species. Eight Craig antiaromatic compounds were synthesized by deprotonation-induced reduction process and were fully characterized as follows. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography showed that these complexes have planar structures composed of fused five-membered rings with clearly alternating carbon-carbon bond lengths. In addition, proton NMR ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy in these structures showed distinctive upfield shifts of the proton peaks to the range of antiaromatic peripheral hydrogens. Experimental spectroscopy observations, along with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, provided evidence for the Craig antiaromaticity of these complexes. Further study experimentally and theoretically revealed that the strong exothermicity of the acid-base neutralization process was the driving force for this challenging transformation forming Craig antiaromatic species. Our findings complete a full cycle of aromatic chemistry, opening an avenue for the development of new class of antiaromatic systems.

Proton ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are an emerging clean energy technology; however, a key challenge persists in improving the electrolyte proton conductivity, e.g., around 10 -3 -10 -2 S cm -1 at 600 °C for the well-known BaZr 0.8 Y 0.2 O 3 (BZY), that is far below the required 0.1 S cm -1 . Herein, we report an approach for tuning BZY from low bulk to high interfacial conduction by introducing a semiconductor CeO 2-δ forming a semiconductor-ionic heterostructure CeO 2-δ /BZY. The interfacial conduction was identified by a significantly higher conductivity obtained from the BZY grain boundary than that of the bulk and a further improvement from the CeO 2-δ /BZY which achieved a remarkably high proton conductivity of 0.23 S cm -1 . This enabled a high peak power of 845 mW cm -2 at 520 °C from a PCFC using the CeO 2-δ /BZY as the electrolyte, in strong contrast to the BZY bulk conduction electrolyte with only 229 mW cm -2 . Furthermore, the CeO 2-δ /BZY fuel cell was operated under water electrolysis mode, exhibiting a very high current density output of 3.2 A cm -2 corresponding to a high H 2 production rate, under 2.0 V at 520 °C. The band structure and a built-in-field-assisted proton transport mechanism have been proposed and explained. Understanding ethanol electrooxidation reaction kinetics is fundamental to the development of direct ethanol fuel cells. The utilization of binary PtAu catalysts has been reported recently as an effective strategy to enhance ethanol electrocatalytic oxidation; however, the catalytic reaction mechanisms are still unclear. In this work, we systematically studied the ethanol electrooxidation reaction mechanisms on Pt/Au(111) model surfaces at an atomic level through high level density functional theory (DFT) calculations; particularly the flat (111) terrace and the stepped (111) × (110) and (111) × (100) interfaces with diverse surface atomic arrangements were considered, respectively. It was found that for ethanol dissociation, the flat (111) terrace is more active than the stepped (111) × (110) and (111) × (100) interfaces. The stepped interfaces, however, could activate water from the aqueous electrolyte solution to form adsorbed OH* at the electrode potential below 0.53 V vs. SHE (standard hydrogen electrode), which is of great importance in coupling with the CH 3 CO* intermediate formed from ethanol dissociation to produce acetic acid as the final product of the ethanol electrooxidation reaction without releasing CO 2 . The C-C bond splitting process for ethanol oxidation to form C1 products was very limited. The terrace sites can facilitate both ethanol decomposition and acetic acid formation at the electrode potential above 0.53 V vs. SHE. Our results clearly identify the fact that for ethanol electrooxidation reactions, with an increase in electrode potential, the active sites on Pt/Au(111) surfaces change from those at the stepped interfaces to the flat terrace sites.

The massive food wastes pose a growing health concern for spreading of antibiotic resistance and pathogens due to food spoilage. However, little is known about these microbial hazards during collection, classification, and transportation before eventual treatment. Here, we profiled the temporal variations of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), pathogens, bacterial and fungal communities across four typical food wastes (vegetable, fish, meat, and rice) during storage at room temperature in summer (maximum 28-29 °C) of typical southeast city in China. A total of 171 ARGs and 32 mobile genetic elements were detected, and the absolute abundance of ARGs significantly increased by up to 126-fold with the storage time. Additionally, five bacterial pathogens containing virulence factor genes were detected, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was persistently detected throughout the storage time in all food types except rice. Moreover, fungal pathogens (e.g., Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium) were also frequently detected. Notably, animal food wastes were demonstrated to harbor higher abundance of ARGs and more types of pathogens, indicating a higher level of hazard. Mobile genetic elements and food types were demonstrated to mainly impact ARG profiles and pathogens, respectively. Background/purpose: Two urease operons were identified in Klebsiella pneumoniae CG43, ure-1 and ure-2. This study investigates whether a differential regulation of the expression of ure-1 and ure-2 exists and how urease activity influences the acid stress response and expression of type 1 and type 3 fimbriae., Methods: The ureA1 and ureA2 gene specific deletion mutants were constructed. Promoter activity was assessed using a LacZ reporter system. The sensitivity to acid stress was determined by assessing the survival after pH 2.5 treatment. The influence on type 1 and type 3 fimbriae expression was assessed using western blotting and mannose-sensitive yeast agglutination and biofilm formation assay, respectively., Results: Bacterial growth analysis in mM9-U or modified Stuart broth revealed that ure-1 was the principal urease system, and ure-2 had a negative effect on ure-1 activity. Deletion of the fur or nac gene had no apparent effect on the activity of P ure1 , P ure2-1 , and P ure2-2 . The P ure2-2 activity was enhanced by deletion of the hns gene. ureA1 deletion increased acid stress sensitivity, whereas the deleting effect of ureA2 was notable without hns. Deletion of ureA1 or ureA2 significantly induced the expression of type 1 fimbriae but decreased MrkA production and biofilm formation., Conclusion: ure-1 is the primary expression system in K. pneumoniae CG43, while ure-2 is active in the absence of hns. Species of Cantharellus subgenus Cantharellus are interesting and important for their mycorrhizal properties, medicinal values, and edibility. In China, there are many undescribed species of the subgenus. In this study, four new species of subg. Cantharellus , viz. Cantharellus albopileatus , Cantharellus chuiweifanii , Cantharellus pinetorus , and Cantharellus ravus from Hainan and Hunan Provinces, respectively, were described based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence as a contribution to the knowledge of the species diversity in China. The development of cholesterol-free mayonnaise has attracted increasing interest in the food colloid field, due to the potential health concerns as a result of consumption of cholesterol-rich mayonnaise. One effective strategy in this regard is to substitute or partially substitute egg yolk with other organic emulsifiers and stabilizers, without affecting the quality of the product. In the work, we reported an effective strategy to fabricate high freeze-thaw-stability high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs), using complexes of a heated soy protein isolate (SPI) and chitosan (CS) at pH 3.0 as the emulsifiers and stabilizers. The SPI/CS complexes, formed even at a very low CS-to-SPI ratio, e.g., 1:10, showed a high capacity to stabilize HIPEs with a high freeze-thaw stability. Increasing the CS-to-SPI ratio in the complexes resulted in a progressive strengthening of gel network in the corresponding HIPEs, together with a gradual improvement of emulsification performance. The gel network of the HIPEs stabilized by the SPI/CS complexes was mainly maintained by the inter-droplet noncovalent interactions involving the CS molecules. The presence of CS also progressively increased the percentage of adsorbed proteins at the interface, and decreased the surface coverage of proteins at the interface. The high freeze-thaw stability of such HIPEs might be unrelated to the ice crystal formation during the freezing, and was more likely associated with the strong steric repulsion contributed to the adsorbed CS molecules between different droplets. The results indicated that the complexation of heated SPI and CS could provide an effective strategy to facilely fabricate outstanding freeze-thaw-stability HI PEs as potential mayonnaise replacers., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. CO poisoning of Pt-group metal catalysts is a long-standing problem, particularly for hydrogen oxidation reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we report a catalyst of Ru oxide-coated Ru supported on TiO 2 (Ru@RuO 2 /TiO 2 ), which can tolerate 1-3% CO, enhanced by about 2 orders of magnitude over the classic PtRu/C catalyst, for hydrogen electrooxidation in a rotating disk electrode test. This catalyst can work stably in 1% CO/H 2 for 50 h. About 20% of active sites can survive even in a pure CO environment. The high CO tolerance is not via a traditional bifunctional mechanism, i.e., oxide promoting CO oxidation, but rather via hydrous metal oxide shell blocking CO adsorption. An ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation indicates that water confined in grain boundaries of the Ru oxide layer and Ru surface can suppress the diffusion and adsorption of CO. This oxide blocking layer approach opens a promising avenue for the design of high CO-tolerant electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Taiwan, the first country in Asia to provide same-sex couples a legal right to marriage, has witnessed furious debate on both sides. To understand this debate, we combined content analysis and the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) method to capture themes and states of mind reflected in the news articles. Arguments based in human rights and reflecting heterosexual preferences which were observed elsewhere also dominated the discourses in Taiwan. First-person pronouns, positive and negative emotions, and differentiation were found to be associated with rights discourses and, in turn, support for same-sex marriage. The themes, the state of mind of the involved parties, and same-sex marriage legalization are further discussed.

Drought and salinity are the two major abiotic stresses constraining the crop yield worldwide. Both of them trigger cellular dehydration and cause osmotic stress which leads to cytosolic and vacuolar volume reduction. However, whether plants share a similar tolerance mechanism in response to these two stresses under natural conditions has seldom been comparatively reported. There are three different ecotypes of reed within a 5 km 2 region in the Badanjilin desert of Northwest China. Taking the typical swamp reed (SR) as a control, we performed a comparative study on the adaption mechanisms of the two terrestrial ecotypes: dune reed (DR) and heavy salt meadow reed (HSMR) by physiological and proteomic approaches coupled with bioinformatic analysis. The results showed that HSMR and DR have evolved C 4 -like photosynthetic and anatomical characteristics, such as the increased bundle sheath cells (BSCs) and chloroplasts in BSCs, higher density of veins, and lower density and aperture of stomata. In addition, the thylakoid membrane fluidity also plays an important role in their higher drought and salinity tolerance capability. The proteomic results further demonstrated that HSMR and DR facilitated the regulation of proteins associated with photosynthesis and energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, transcription and translation, and stress responses to well-adapt to the drought and salinity conditions. Cancer stem cells (CSCs), dynamic subsets of cancer cells, are responsible for malignant progression. The unique properties of CSCs, including self-renewal, differentiation, and malignancy, closely depend on the tumor microenvironment. Mechanical components in the microenvironment, including matrix stiffness, fluid shear stress, compression and tension stress, affect the fate of CSCs and further influence the cancer process. This paper reviews recent studies of mechanical components and CSCs, and further discusses the intrinsic correlation among them. By using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the structure and dynamics of supercooled single-chain cross-linked nanoparticle (SCNP) melts having a range of cross-linking degrees ϕ. We find a nearly linear increase in glass-transition temperature (T g ) with increasing ϕ. Correspondingly, we have also experimentally synthesized a series of polystyrene-based SCNPs and have found that the measured T g estimated from differential scanning calorimetry is qualitatively consistent with the trend predicted by our simulation estimates. Experimentally, an increase in T g as large as ΔT g = 61 K for ϕ = 0.36 is found compared with their linear chain counterparts, indicating that the changes in dynamics with cross-links are quite appreciable. We attribute the increase in T g to the enlarged effective hard-core volume and the corresponding reduction in the free volume of the polymer segments. Topological constraints evidently frustrate the local packing. In addition, the introduction of intra-molecular cross-linking bonds slows down the structural relaxation and simultaneously enhances the local coupling motion on the length scales within SCNPs. Consequently, a more pronounced dynamical heterogeneity (DH) is observed for larger ϕ, as quantified by measuring the dynamical correlation length through the four-point susceptibility parameter, χ 4 . The increase in DH is directly related to the enhanced local cooperative motion derived from intra-molecular cross-linking bonds and structural heterogeneity derived from the cross-linking process. These results shed new light on the influence of intra-molecular topological constraints on the segmental dynamics of polymer melts.

The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical half-cell reaction for hydrogen production via water electrolysis. However, the practical OER suffers from sluggish kinetics and thus requires efficient electrocatalysts. Transition metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) represent one of the most active classes of OER catalysts. An in-depth understanding of the activity of LDH based electrocatalysts can promote further rational design and active site regulation of high-performance electrocatalysts. In this review, the fundamental understanding of the structural characteristics of LDHs is demonstrated first, then comparisons and in-depth discussions of recent advances in LDHs as highly active OER catalysts in alkaline media are offered, which include both experimental and computational methods. On top of the active site identification and structural characterization of LDHs on an atomic scale, strategies to promote the OER activity are summarised, including doping, intercalation and defect-making. Furthermore, the concept of superaerophobicity, which has a profound impact on the performance of gas evolution electrodes, is explored to enhance LDHs and their derivatives for a large scale OER. In addition, certain operating standards for OER measurements are proposed to avoid inconsistency in evaluating the OER activity of LDHs. Finally, several key challenges in using LDHs as anode materials for large scale water splitting, such as the issue of stability and the adoption of membrane-electrode-assembly based electrolysers, are emphasized to shed light on future research directions.

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Understanding of dynamic behaviors of gas bubbles on solid surfaces has significant impacts on gas-involving electrochemical reactions, mineral flotation, and so on in industry. Contact angle (θ) is widely employed to characterize the wetting behaviors of bubbles on solid surfaces; however, it usually fluctuates within the bubble's advancing (θ a ) and receding (θ r ) range. Although the term of most-stable contact angle (θ ms ) was defined previously as the closest valuable approximation for thermodynamically meaningful contact angle for a droplet on a solid surface, it has not been widely studied; and the precise θ ms measurement methods are inadequate to describe bubbles' wetting behaviors on solid surfaces. Herein, we proposed to take θ ms as the mean value of θ a and θ r , as a more accurate descriptor of gas bubbles' dynamic behaviors on nonideal solid surfaces, similar to the definition of droplets' θ ms on solid surfaces. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed θ ms have been evidenced by recording the bubbles' contacting behaviors on solid surfaces with varied wettabilities. In addition, it was found that the contact angle hysteresis (δ), as the difference between θ a and θ r, reached its maximum value when θ ms approached 90°, regardless of the roughness ( r ) of the substrates. Finally, built on the above concept, the lateral adhesion force ( f ) of the gas bubble on the solid interface, which worked on the three-phase contact line (TPCL) of an individual bubble on a solid surface against its lateral motion during the bubble advancing or receding process, was described quantitatively by combining θ a , θ r , and the liquid-gas interfacial tension (γ lg ). Experimental and theoretical data jointly confirmed that f reached its maximum value at θ ms ∼ 90°, namely, a "super-sticky" state, which described the dynamically most sluggish movement of the bubble along the solid surface.

The bubbles electrochemically generated by gas evolution reactions are commonly driven off the electrode by buoyancy, a weak force used to overcome bubble adhesion barriers, leading to low gas-transporting efficiency. Herein, a Janus electrode with asymmetric wettability has been prepared by modifying two sides of a porous stainless-steel mesh electrode, with superhydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Pt/C (or Ir/C) catalyst with well-balanced hydrophobicity, respectively, affording unidirectional transportation of as-formed gaseous hydrogen and oxygen from the catalyst side to the gas-collecting side during water splitting. "Bubble-free" electrolysis was realized while "floating" the Janus electrode on the electrolyte. Antibuoyancy through-mesh bubble transportation was observed while immersing the electrode with the PTFE side downward. The wettability gradient within the electrode endowed sticky states of bubbles on the catalyst side, resulting in efficient bubble-free gas transportation with 15-fold higher current density than submerged states.

Chiral organic compounds are excellent second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their inherent non-symmetric electronic structures combined with the advantages of organic compounds. At present, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool for predicting the properties of novel materials. In this paper, based on chiral lemniscular [16]cycloparaphenylene, three novel compounds are designed by introduction of donor/acceptor units and their combinations. The geometrical/electronic structure, electronic absorption, and the second-order NLO properties of these compounds have been systematically investigated by DFT/TDDFT theory. The simulated UV-Vis/CD spectra of compound 1 are in good agreement with the experimental ones, enabling us to assign their electronic transition characteristics and absolute configuration with high confidence. The investigations show that energy gaps, absorption wavelength and second-order NLO response may be effectively tuned by the introduction of the donor or acceptor units or their combinations. For instance, the second-order NLO value of compound 4 is about 207 times as large as the average second-order polarizability of the organic molecule urea. Adding small nanoparticles (NPs) into polymer melt can lead to a non-Einstein-like decrease in viscosity. However, the underlying mechanism remains a long-standing unsolved puzzle. Here, for an all-polymer nanocomposite formed by linear polystyrene (PS) chains and PS single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs), we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and experimental rheology measurements. We show that with a fixed (small) loading of the SCNP, viscosity reduction (VR) effect can be largely amplified with an increase in matrix chain length [Formula: see text], and that the system with longer polymer chains will have a larger VR. We demonstrate that such [Formula: see text]-dependent VR can be attributed to the friction reduction experienced by polymer segment blobs which have similar size and interact directly with these SCNPs. A theoretical model is proposed based on the tube model. We demonstrate that it can well describe the friction reduction experienced by melt polymers and the VR effect in these composite systems.

Currently, discovering new materials with superior second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) performance has become a very hot research topic in the fields of chemistry and materials science. Now, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool to predict the performance of novel materials. In this paper, based on benzannulated and selenophene-annulated expanded helicenes, twenty-six helicenes are designed by introduction donor/acceptor moieties and their combinations at different substituent positions. The geometrical/electronic structures, electronic transition, and second-order NLO properties of these helicenes are full investigated by DFT/TDDFT theory. The investigations show that these helicenes have large first hyperpolarizability values ( β HRS ). For instance, the β HRS value (29.95 × 10 -30 esu) of helicene H24 is about 7 times larger than that of the highly π-delocalized phenyliminomethyl ferrocene complex. In addition, the introduction of acceptor NO 2 unit at R 7 and R 8 positions for helicenes H1 and H15 can obtain the largest β HRS value, which is attributed to the enhancement of electron acceptor ability. In nature, microbes use extracellular electron transfer (EET) to recover noble metals. Most attention has been paid to the biorecovery process occurring intracellularly and on the cell surface. In this work, we report that Pd nanorods could be biosynthesized by Enterobacter cloacae SgZ-5T in the extracellular space. This bacterium possesses both a direct EET pathway through membrane redox systems and an indirect EET pathway via the self-secreted electron carrier hydroquinone (HQ). When exposed to Pd(II), the bacteria adjusted their metabolic pathway and membrane-bound proteins to secrete riboflavin (RF). However, no HQ was detected in the supernatant in presence of Pd(II). No significant change was observed through metabolomic analysis regarding the abundance of HQ in presence of Pd(II) compared to Pd(II)-free supernatant. Similar results were also obtained through transcriptomic analysis of YqjG gene encoding glutathionyl-HQ reductase synthase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic evidence indicated that HQ may adsorb to the surface of Pd nanorods. Moreover, the gene encoding RF synthase (ribE) was up-regulated in the present of Pd(II), suggesting that this bioreduction process induced RF synthase, which had been shown in previous results. The UV-vis spectroscopy data demonstrated that the Pd(II) reduction rate was enhanced by 5%, 5.5% and 30% by the addition of 3.33 μM HQ, 3.33 μM RF and the both, respectively. All these results revealed that the bi-mediators secreted by bacteria were beneficial for biorecovery of Pd. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide. Novel and effective therapy is needed to prevent the secondary spread of damage beyond the initial injury. The aim of this study was to investigate whether berberine has a neuroprotective effect on secondary injury post-TBI, and to explore its potential mechanism in this protection. The mice were randomly divided into Sham-saline, TBI-saline and TBI-Berberine (50 mg/kg). TBI was induced by Feeney's weight-drop technique. Saline or berberine was administered via oral gavage starting 1 h post-TBI and continuously for 21 days. Motor coordination, spatial learning and memory were assessed using beam-walking test and Morris water maze test, respectively. Brain sections were processed for lesion volume assessment, and expression of neuronal nuclei (NeuN), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were detected via immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. There were statistically significant improvement in motor coordination, spatial learning and memory in the TBI-Berberine group, compared to the TBI-saline group. Treatment with berberine significantly reduced cortical lesion volume, neuronal loss, COX-2, iNOS and 8-OHdG expression in both the cortical lesion border zone (LBZ) and ipsilateral hippocampal CA1 region (CA1), compared to TBI-saline. Berberine treatment also significantly decreased Iba1- and GFAP-positive cell number in both the cortical LBZ and ipsilateral CA1, relative to saline controls. These results indicated that berberine exerted neuroprotective effects on secondary injury in mice with TBI probably through anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.

The role of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with different Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of PLR on HCC prognosis. Five electronic databases were searched for clinical trials focusing on the role of PLR in the prognosis of HCC. A total of 297 potential studies were initially identified, and 9 studies comprising 2449 patients were finally enrolled to evaluate the association between the pretreatment PLR and clinical outcomes of overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and event occurrence in patients with HCC in different BCLC stages. An elevated pretreatment PLR indicated unfavorable worse OS (HR = 1.73; 95% CI: (1.46, 2.04); P < 0.00001) and DFS (HR = 1.30; 95% CI: (1.06, 1.60); P = 0.01). Subgroup analysis indicated that high PLR indicated poor OS among BCLC-B/C patients without heterogeneity, while PLR in BCLC-A patients indicated high statistical heterogeneity with I 2 value of 78%. As for the correlation between PLR and event occurrence, high PLR was related to poor clinical event occurrence only among BCLC-C patients, though obvious heterogeneity was observed in all different BCLC stages. In conclusion, PLR may be a significant biomarker in the prognosis of HCC in different BCLC stages.

Kinesin family member 20B (KIF20B) has been reported to have an oncogenic role in bladder and hepatocellular cancer cells, but its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression remains unclear. In this study, we assessed the mRNA and protein levels of KIF20B in CRC tissues using qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. KIF20B was overexpressed in CRC tissues and was associated with cancer invasion and metastasis. Mechanistically, KIF20B overexpression promoted the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process mediated by glioma-associated oncogene 1 (Gli1) as well as CRC cell migration and invasion. Interestingly, KIF20B was localized in pseudopod protrusions of CRC cells and influenced the formation of cell protrusions, especially the EMT-related invadopodia. Moreover, intracellular actin dynamic participated in the modulation of the Gli1-mediated EMT and EMT-related cell pseudopod protrusion formation induced by KIF20B. We identified a role for KIF20B in CRC progression and revealed a correlation between KIF20B expression in CRC tissues and patient prognosis. The underlying mechanism was associated with the Gli1-mediated EMT and EMT-related cell protrusion formation modulated by intracellular actin dynamic. Although recent studies focused on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of refractory schizophrenia have reported that it may be beneficial, there is still lack of convincing evidence and critical meta-analytic work regarding its effectiveness as an adjunctive therapy. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of TCM in combination with antipsychotics for refractory schizophrenia. Fourteen articles involving 1725 patients published as of December 2016 were included which compared antipsychotic therapies to either TCM alone, or TCM as an adjunctive therapy. TCM was observed to have beneficial effects on aspects of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) including total score changes and negative score changes, as well as clinical effects estimated with PANSS or the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). The changes in extrapyramidal side effects (RSESE) scores from baseline to the end of the treatment period were similar in two groups of related trials. TCM was also reported to mitigate some anti-psychotic related side-effects and overall, TCM adjuvant therapy was generally safe and well tolerated. While, the results indicated the potential utility of TCM as an alternative adjunctive therapeutic for refractory schizophrenia treatment, there remains a need for further high-quality studies.

Progranulin (PGRN) is a multi-functional growth factor that mediates cell proliferation, survival, migration, tumorigenesis, wound healing, development, and anti-inflammation activity. A novel alternatively spliced transcript from the short-form PGRN1 gene encoding a novel, secreted GRN peptide composed of 20-a.a. signal peptide and 41-a.a. GRN named GRN-41 was identified to be abundantly expressed in immune-related organs including spleen, head kidney, and intestine of Mozambique tilapia. The expression of GRN-41 and PGRN1 were further induced in the spleen of tilapia challenged with Vibrio vulnificus at 3 h post infection (hpi) and 6 hpi, respectively. In this study, we established three transgenic zebrafish lines expressing the secreted GRN-41, GRN-A and PGRN1 of Mozambique tilapia specifically in muscle. The relative percent of survival (RPS) was enhanced in adult transgenic zebrafish expressing tilapia GRN-41 (68%), GRN-A (32%) and PGRN1 (36%) compared with control transgenic zebrafish expressing AcGFP after challenge with V. vulnificus. It indicates tilapia GRN-41 is a potent peptide against V. vulnificus infection. The secreted tilapia GRN-41 can induce the expression of innate immune response-related genes, such as TNFa, TNFb, IL-8, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-26, IL-21, IL-10, complement C3, lysozyme (Lyz) and the hepatic antimicrobial peptide hepcidin (HAMP), in adult transgenic zebrafish without V. vulnificus infection. The tilapia GRN-41 peptide can enhance the innate immune response by further elevating TNFb, IL-1β, IL-8, IL-6, and HAMP expression in early responsive time to the V. vulnificus challenge in transgenic zebrafish. Our results suggest that the novel GRN-41 peptide generated from alternative splicing of the tilapia PGRN1 gene is a potent peptide that defends against V. vulnificus in the transgenic zebrafish model by modulation of innate immunity., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Cubic, octahedral and rhombic dodecahedral Pd nanocrystals were synthesized and examined as nanocatalysts for electro-oxidation of ethanol and ethylene glycol. Combined electrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal that nanofacet-dependent affinity and reactivity of OH ads and CO ads are closely linked to the C2 alcohol oxidation activities, with the highest reactivity found on the Pd nanocubes bounded by {100} facets.

Electrochemical oxidation of four different alcohol molecules (methanol, ethanol, n -butanol and 2-butanol) at electrodeposited Pt film and carbon-supported Pt catalyst film electrodes, as well as the effect of mass transport on the oxidation reaction, has been studied systematically using the rotating disk electrode (RDE) technique. It was shown that oxidation current decreased with an increase in the rotation rate (ω) for all alcohols studied over electrodeposited Pt film electrodes. In contrast, the oxidation current was found to increase with an increase in the ω for Pt/C in ethanol and n -butanol-containing solutions. The decrease was found to be nearly reversible for ethanol and n -butanol at the electrodeposited Pt film electrode ruling out the possibility of intermediate CO ads poisoning being the sole cause of the decrease and was attributed to the formation of soluble intermediate species which diffuse away from the electrode at higher ω. In contrast, an increase in the current with an increase in ω for the carbon supported catalyst may suggest that the increase in residence time of the soluble species within the catalyst layer, results in further oxidation of these species. Furthermore, the reversibility of the peak current on decreasing the ω could indicate that the surface state has not significantly changed due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of ethanol and n -butanol.

Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features and prognosis of idiopathic membranous nephropathy(IMN)in adolescents. Methods This was a retrospective study on IMN patients hospitalized between June 2012 and December 2014,and a total of 33 IMN patients aged between 13 and 24 years old were enrolled in the study.Meanwhile,33 IMN patients aged more than 24 years old were selected randomly as control group during the same period.Diagnosis was confirmed by renal biopsy,and the secondary causes of membranous nephropathy were ruled out.Data collected from medical record and biopsy were analyzed. Results In the adolescent IMN group,the mean age at renal biopsy was(20±3)years old,and the male/female ratio was 22/11.Twenty-three cases presented as nephrotic syndrome.Systolic and diastolic pressures were(127±13)mmHg and(77±9)mmHg,respectively.The median 24-hour urine protein was 5.14(3.39,9.31)g/d,and the median serum creatinine was 62(52,73)μmol/L.The positive rate of serum anti-phospholipase A2 receptor in adolescent group was 54%.Compared with control group,the adolescent patients had lower incidence of hypertension and higher baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate level [15.2% vs.39.3%,χ 2 =4.889,P=0.03;125 ml/(min·1.73m 2 )vs.100 ml/(min·1.73m 2 ),U=137.5,P<0.001].According to IMN staging criteria in electron microscopy,adolescent patients were classified as one case in stage I,21 in stage Ⅱ,and 11 in stage Ⅲ or higher.The positive rates of IgG1,IgG2,IgG3 and IgG4 subclass staining in glomeruli were 46.9%,3.1%,56.3%,and 87.5%,respectively.Compared with control group,the adolescent patients had lower incidence of renal interstitial fibrosis and arteriolar lesions(6.1% vs.66.7%,χ 2 =26.19,P<0.001;15.2% vs.66.7%,χ 2 =18.11,P<0.001).Three patients lost to follow-up while others started steroid combined with cyclosporine A(n=20),cyclophosphamide(n=7),or mycophenolate(n=1)or solely(n=2).After a median follow-up of 18(12,24)months,the median proteinuria decreased to 0.20(0.10,0.42)g/d,whereas serum creatinine level remained stable [69(56.8,81.3)μmol/L].Seventeen patients(56.7%)achieved complete remission(CR),and the remaining 13 patients(43.4%)achieved partial remission(PR).The median time of CR and PR were three and six months,respectively.Only one patient relapsed during the follow-up.Also,21 cases received maintenance therapy including cyclosporine A(n=18),azathioprine(n=2)and mycophenolate(n=1).Conclusions The immunofluorescence IgG subclass in glomeruli and distribution of serum anti-phospholipase A2 receptor in adolescent IMN patients are similar to those in older IMN patients.IMN patients in adolescents responded well to immunosuppressive therapy.Cyclosporine A in low dose as maintenance therapy is effective after achieving remission,and will not increase risk of nephrotoxicity.

The improvement of the freeze-thaw stability of emulsions by interfacial engineering has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The present work investigated the potential of using soy protein isolate (SPI) aggregate nanoparticles as the Pickering stabilizers to improve the freeze-thaw stability of the resultant emulsions. SPI nanoparticles with different particle sizes and surface properties were fabricated through heating the SPI solutions (at a constant protein concentration of 2%, w/v) at 95 °C for 15 min, by varying the ionic strength (I) in the range of 0-500 mM. The nanoparticles fabricated at I values of 100-500 mM exhibited larger particle sizes and higher surface hydrophobicity, but poorer emulsification efficiency than those at I = 0.05 mM. The presence of NaCl during the nanoparticle fabrication resulted in the formation of a kind of gel-like emulsion with a high extent of droplet flocculation. The emulsion stabilized by SPI nanoparticles at I = 0.05 mM was highly susceptible to coalescence, flocculation and creaming upon freeze-thaw treatment, while those in the presence of NaCl exhibited excellent freeze-thaw stability. The much better freeze-thaw stability of the emulsions in the presence of NaCl (relative to that at I = 0.05 mM) was largely attributed to the gel-like network formation, rather than the salt itself. The results indicated that a kind of Pickering emulsion with excellent freeze-thaw stability, stabilized by heat-induced SPI nanoparticles, could be fabricated by heating the SPI solutions at I values of 100-500 mM. The findings would be of great relevance for providing important information about the development of food grade Pickering emulsions stabilized by protein-based particles, with potential applications in frozen food, or functional food formulations.

Previous studies have found that G-protein-coupled receptor 116 (GPR116) is a regulator of breast cancer metastasis. However, the role of GPR116 in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) carcinogenesis and progression is unknown. In this study, We found GPR116 expression was significantly up-regulated in CRC specimens compared with corresponding non-cancerous tissues. Increased GPR116 expression in CRC was correlated with histological differentiation and distant metastasis. In addition, high expression of GPR116 was significantly associated with poor overall survival of CRC patients, which was also confirmed by GSE14333, GSE17536 and GSE33113 datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Furthermore, we demonstrated that the ability of proliferation and invasion of CRC cell lines HCT116 and LOVO was markedly reduced after transfected with siRNA-GPR116. Meanwhile, GPR116 may drive EMT in CRC cells through AKT/EKR signaling pathway, resulting in metastasis. Thus, GPR116 may be a novel reliable prognostic indicator and a risk factor in CRC progression.

Tumor microenvironment (TME) has received more and more attention as modern medical research has begun to understand its importance in tumorigenesis. The occurrence, development, metastasis and drug resistance of tumors are closely related to TME. TME is a complicated system, including nontumor cells, their secreted cytokines, extracellular matrix, among other components. The concepts of wholism and multitarget regulation in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) make it well suited to the regulation of TME. In this paper, the authors reviewed the progress of TME research and the effect of TCM on TME, providing some views of Chinese medicine in antitumor research.

Core-shell composites with strong phase-phase contact could provide an incentive for catalytic activity. A simple, yet efficient, H 2 O-mediated method has been developed to synthesize a mesoscopic core-shell W@WC architecture with a dodecahedral microstructure, via a one-pot reaction. The H 2 O plays an important role in the resistance of carbon diffusion, resulting in the formation of the W core and W-terminated WC shell. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that adding W as core reduced the oxygen adsorption energy and provided the W-terminated WC surface. The W@WC exhibits significant electrocatalytic activities toward hydrogen evolution and nitrobenzene electroreduction reactions, which are comparable to those found for commercial Pt/C, and substantially higher than those found for meso- and nano-WC materials. The experimental results were explained by DFT calculations based on the energy profiles in the hydrogen evolution reactions over WC, W@WC, and Pt model surfaces. The W@WC also shows a high thermal stability and thus may serve as a promising more economical alternative to Pt catalysts in these important energy conversion and environmental protection applications. The current approach can also be extended or adapted to various metals and carbides, allowing for the design and fabrication of a wide range of catalytic and other multifunctional composites.

NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, has been increasingly reported to be involved in tumorigenesis and/or tumor progression, but limited data are available regarding the role of NOX4 in colorectal carcinoma (CRC). We retrieved six independent investigations from Oncomine database and found that NOX4 is highly expressed in CRC tissues compared with corresponding normal controls. Similar results were also found in clinical specimens at both mRNA and protein levels. Immunohistochemical analysis indicated that NOX4 overexpression was highly correlated with T classification, N classification, distant metastasis, and poor prognosis of CRC patients, which was also confirmed by GSE14333 and GSE17536 datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus. Furthermore, we demonstrated that when NOX4 expression was knocked down by siRNAs, cell proliferation, cell-cycle and apoptosis, migration and invasion were significantly altered in CRC cell lines HCT116 and LOVO. Meanwhile, NOX4 promoted cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis, migration and invasion by regulating the expression of relevant genes. By these approaches we aim to elucidate NOX4 may be a reliable prognostic factor or therapeutic target in CRC.

Conductive polymers have been increasingly used as fuel cell catalyst support due to their electrical conductivity, large surface areas and stability. The incorporation of metal nanoparticles into a polymer matrix can effectively increase the specific surface area of these materials and hence improve the catalytic efficiency. In this work, a nanoparticle loaded conductive polymer nanocomposite was obtained by a one-step synthesis approach based on room temperature direct current plasma-liquid interaction. Gold nanoparticles were directly synthesized from HAuCl 4 precursor in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The resulting AuNPs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites were subsequently characterized under a practical alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell operation condition for its potential application as an electrocatalyst. Results show that AuNPs sizes within the PEDOT:PSS matrix are dependent on the plasma treatment time and precursor concentration, which in turn affect the nanocomposites electrical conductivity and their catalytic performance. Under certain synthesis conditions, unique nanoscale AuNPs/PEDOT:PSS core-shell structures could also be produced, indicating the interaction at the AuNPs/polymer interface. The enhanced catalytic activity shown by AuNPs/PEDOT:PSS has been attributed to the effective electron transfer and reactive species diffusion through the porous polymer network, as well as the synergistic interfacial interaction at the metal/polymer and metal/metal interfaces.

In this work, we have studied methanol oxidation mechanisms on RuO 2 (100) by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with some explicit interfacial water molecules. The overall mechanisms are identified as: CH 3 OH* → CH 3 O* → HCHO* → HCH(OH) 2 * → HCHOOH* → HCOOH* → mono-HCOO* → CO 2 *, without CO formation. This study provides a theoretical insight into C1 molecule oxidation mechanisms at atomic levels on metal oxide surfaces under an aqueous environment.

The H 2 O splitting mechanism is a very attractive alternative used in electrochemistry for the formation of O 3 . The most efficient catalysts employed for this reaction at room temperature are SnO 2 -based, in particular the Ni/Sb-SnO 2 catalyst. In order to investigate the H 2 O splitting mechanism density functional theory (DFT) was performed on a Ni/Sb-SnO 2 surface with oxygen vacancies. By calculating different SnO 2 facets, the (110) facet was deemed most stable, and further doped with Sb and Ni. On this surface, the H 2 O splitting mechanism was modelled paying particular attention to the final two steps, the formation of O 2 and O 3 . Previous studies on β-PbO 2 have shown that the final step in the reaction (the formation of O 3 ) occurs via an Eley-Rideal style interaction where surface O 2 desorbs before attacking surface O to form O 3 . It is revealed that for Ni/Sb-SnO 2 , although the overall reaction is the same the surface mechanism is different. The formation of O 3 is found to occur through a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism as opposed to the Eley-Rideal mechanism. In addition to this the relevant adsorption energies (E ads ), Gibb's free energy (ΔG rxn ) and activation barriers (E act ) for the final two steps modelled in the gas phase have been shown, providing the basis for a tool to develop new materials with higher current efficiencies.
