Abstract This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hemodialysis duration (HDD) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. A total of 60 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis and 67 healthy controls were analyzed. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was employed to measure annular RNFL thicknesses. The hemodialysis group exhibited reduced temporal and inferior RNFL thicknesses relative to the control group. In hemodialysis patients, the inferior RNFL thickness was negatively correlated with HDD and positively correlated with intraocular pressure (IOP). Moreover, IOP was positively correlated with HDD. Mediation analysis showed that the negative correlation between HDD and inferior RNFL thickness was mediated by IOP. In conclusion, hemodialysis leads to temporal and inferior RNFL thinning, and the thickness reduction is proportional to hemodialysis duration. However, such changes are not induced by an increase in IOP.

IntroductionInflammatory and thrombotic biomarkers are simple prognostic indicators of adverse clinical outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke (IS). However, isolated assessment of inflammatory or thrombus biomarkers in patients with IS is limited in clinical practice.MethodsThis study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of a novel, simplified thrombo-inflammatory prognostic score (TIPS) that combines both inflammatory and thrombus biomarkers in the early phase of IS and to identify high-risk patients at the time of admission. The study population comprised 915 patients with a primary diagnosis of IS in the emergency departments of five grade A tertiary hospitals in China.ResultsPatients were divided into two groups based on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS):

Studies on leisure walking among older adults have received extensive attention from various areas such as public health, medicine/prevention, sports, geography, architecture, urban/transportation planning, and leisure, as they focus on various themes, including the health benefits of walking, walking behavior surveys, walking behavior, and influencing factors. In such an information-dense study, the duration and frequency of walking are proven to be critical indicators used to evaluate physical activity and are widely applied to provide an essential basis for health interventions for older adults. Leisure walking is the most common activity among older adults in China and is generally performed daily. However, studies on leisure walking among older adults in China remain lacking, leading to the urgent need for additional empirical studies. This study attempted to build a framework for the factors influencing the duration-frequency pattern of daily leisure walking among older adults using the ecological model theory, which could be used as instructions for the case studies. This study was performed using 1,285 samples of leisure walking behavior of older adults in Nanjing. Multivariate logistic regression and other methods were used to explore the duration and frequency pattern of daily leisure walking and its influencing factors among older adults in Nanjing. The results showed that: 1) even though most older adults in Nanjing have not reached the physical activity level recommended by the World Health Organization. In general, the duration and frequency of daily leisure walking among older adults in Nanjing is characterized by "medium duration and high frequency", with the medium and high duration accounting for 75.02% and the medium and high frequency accounting for 89.96%, and the duration and frequency pattern of leisure walking differed among groups. 2) Certain factors commonly influence the duration and frequency pattern of daily leisure walking among older adults in Nanjing, including individual social factors, such as gender, family structure, and residence time in Nanjing, and psychological factors, such as walking preference, walking motivation, perception of personal constraints, and walking behavior intention. 3) The study reports differential factors, including health conditions, negotiation efficacy, and perceived constraints of the built environment, that could affect the duration pattern of daily leisure walking for older adults. The study reports that age and monthly personal income were the main factors influencing the variable frequency pattern of daily leisure walking among older adults. Based on the above study, theoretical and practical implications for facilitating leisure walking participation among older adults in China are discussed.

Aims: Retinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is implicated in the etiology of various ocular disorders. Prior research has demonstrated that bone marrow tyrosine kinase on chromosome X (BMX) contributes to the advancement of ischemic disease and inflammatory reactions. Consequently, the current investigation aims to evaluate BMX's impact on retinal I/R injury and clarify its implied mechanism of action. Main methods: This study utilized male and female systemic BMX knockout (BMX−/−) mice to conduct experiments. The utilization of Western blot assay and immunofluorescence labeling techniques was employed to investigate variations in the expression of protein and tissue localization. Histomorphological changes were observed through H&E staining and SD-OCT examination. Visual function changes were assessed through electrophysiological experiments. Furthermore, apoptosis in the retina was identified using the TUNEL assay, as well as the ELISA technique, which has been utilized to determine the inflammatory factors level. Key findings: Our investigation results revealed that the knockdown of BMX did not yield a significant effect on mouse retina. In mice, BMX knockdown mitigated the negative impact of I/R injury on retinal tissue structure and visual function. BMX knockdown effectively reduced apoptosis, suppressed inflammatory responses, and decreased inflammatory factors subsequent to I/R injury. The outcomes of the current investigation revealed that BMX knockdown partially protected the retina through downregulating phosphorylation of AKT/ERK/STAT3 pathway. Significance: Our investigation showed that BMX−/− reduces AKT, ERK, and STAT3 phosphorylation, reducing apoptosis and inflammation. Thus, this strategy protected the retina from structural and functional damage after I/R injury.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to detect botulinum toxin and Clostridium botulinum （C.botulinum） in 30 batches of infant formula milk powder obtained from an enterprise and to analyze the whole genome of the strain of C. botulinum type B isolated from the samples.MethodsThe samples were subjected to C. botulinum isolation and botulinum toxin typing experiments according to the “National standard for food safety microbiological examination of C. botulinum and botulinum toxin” （GB 4789.12—2016）. The whole genomes of the isolated strains were sequenced and their genetic characteristics were analyzed.ResultsBotulinum toxin was not detected in any of the 30 batches of samples. After intraperitoneal injection of the enrichment solution into mice， four batches of milk powder samples induced symptoms of botulism， but C. botulinum was isolated from only one batch of milk powder samples. Genome sequencing revealed that the bacterium was C. botulinum group Ⅰ， type B， the toxin gene cluster was type Ha， and the toxin gene was subtype B2.ConclusionThe detection of C. botulinum in infant formula milk powder with a complex background of microorganisms should not be based on the isolation of bacteria as the gold standard but should be confirmed by a mouse toxicity test of the enrichment solution combined with a botulinum toxin antiserum protection test. Whole genome sequencing can accurately identify strains and analyze relevant genetic characteristics， providing reliable technical support for handling poisoning events.

For hydraulic engineering, accurate geometric modeling is crucial for design, analysis, and maintenance. In recent years, point cloud technology, with its high precision and detailed data capture capabilities, has gradually become the preferred method for geometric modeling in hydraulic engineering. However, traditional point cloud processing methods exhibit slow data processing speeds and poor mesh quality when reconstructing 3D models. Therefore, we have studied the meshing method for the 3D reconstruction of large-scale discrete point cloud data and proposed a meshing method based on the Delaunay criterion and the growth method to achieve rapid meshing of discrete point cloud data. To demonstrate the efficiency and convenience of the proposed method, point cloud reconstruction experiments are conducted on various buildings. We compare our approach with the Poisson, BPA, and ONet methods. Additionally, we apply it to the Jiangsu Gaogang Water Conservancy Hub in China. The results show that our proposed method is superior in both reconstruction quality and efficiency, providing a promising solution for the reconstruction of 3D building models from point clouds.

Analyzing historical time series data in the form of replay is very important. When replaying massive sensor data, long processing times predominantly occur, that significantly affects the performance of the whole system. Existing solutions do not consider the requirements of large-scale sensor data replay. Therefore, a data replay mechanism based on a concurrent buffer pool is proposed. In this mechanism, a multi-level buffer queue is designed and implemented using a priority queue to ensure the efficiency and stability during the replaying process. Then, a task queue is adopted to ensure the correct order when multiple threads fill the multi-level buffer queue. Moreover, an anomaly detection operator is integrated to reduce outliers in replay data. Using the real hydrologic dataset, the data replay mechanism is evaluated by several experiments. The results show that the data replay mechanism has better performance compare to Apache Phoenix and Apache Hive.

The composition of gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets remained a mystery until recently. In practice, we usually characterize the magnetization of the GRB jets ( σ _0 ) through the ratio between the Poynting flux and matter (baryonic) flux. With the increasing value of σ _0 , magnetic energy gradually takes on a dominant role in the acceleration and energy dissipation of the jet, causing the proportion of thermal component in the prompt-emission spectrum of GRBs to gradually decrease or even be completely suppressed. In this work, we conducted an extensive analysis of the time-resolved spectrum for all Fermi GRBs with known redshift, and we diagnose σ _0 for each time bin by contrasting the thermal and nonthermal radiation components. Our results suggest that most GRB jets should contain a significant magnetic energy component, likely with magnetization factors σ _0 ≥ 10. The value of σ _0 seems to vary significantly within the same GRB. Future studies with more samples, especially those with lower-energy spectral information coverage, will further verify our results.

The prompt emission, X-ray plateau, and X-ray flares of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be from internal dissipation, and the magnetar as the central engine with propeller fallback accretion is proposed to interpret the observed phenomena of GRBs. In this paper, by systematically searching for X-ray emission observed by Swift/X-ray Telescope, we find that seven robust GRBs include both X-ray flares and plateau emissions with measured redshift. More interestingly, the X-ray flares/bumps for those seven GRBs are simultaneously observed in the gamma-ray band. By adopting the propeller fallback accretion model to fit the observed data, it is found that the free parameters of two GRBs (140512A and 180329B) can be constrained very well, while in the other five cases, more or less, they are not all sufficiently constrained. On the other hand, this requires the conversion efficiency of the propeller to be two or three times higher than that of the spindown dipole radiation of the magnetar. If this is the case, it is contradictory to the expectation from the propeller model: namely, a dirtier ejecta should be less efficient in producing gamma-ray emissions. Our results hint that at least the magnetar central engine with propeller fallback accretion model cannot interpret very well both the GRB X-ray flares simultaneously observed in the gamma-ray band and the X-ray flares of GRBs with a high Lorentz factor.

The coalescence of binary neutron stars can yield the expulsion of a fast-moving, quasi-isotropic material, which may induce thermal radiation and give rise to kilonova emission. Moreover, the interaction between the ejected material and the surrounding environment generates an external shock, which can result in a long-lasting radio signal that persists for several decades following the merger. In contrast to supernova ejecta, the kilonova ejecta exhibits a relatively lesser mass and higher velocity, and its expansion may ultimately result in the ejecta density becoming so low that the medium particles can freely pass through the ejecta. It would thereby lead to a kind of incomplete sweeping on the interstellar medium. Employing a toy model, our investigation reveals that such incomplete sweeping may considerably diminish the late-time radio radiation power, irrespective of whether the binary neutron star merger results in the formation of a black hole or a neutron star. Our findings thus imply that the previously reported radio upper limits for certain short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may not necessarily place stringent constraints on the presence of a long-lived magnetar remnant in these short GRBs.

Effects of silkworm pupae powder concentration, glucose concentration, cultural time and initial pH of culture medium on the fermentation of carotenoid were investigated. The results of single-factor experiments showed that when silkworm pupae powder concentration was 7.5 g/L, with glucose concentration at 30 g/L and cultural time of 4 d, as well as initial pH of culture medium of7.0, the carotenoid yield reached the maximum value of 14.51 mg/L, which was 46.9% higher than that of the control. In order to make further improvement on the carotenoid production, the orthogonal tests were performed and the results showed that the order of the factors affecting the carotenoid yield was as follows: cultural time>silkworm pupae powder concentration>glucose concentration>pH. The carotenoid yield reached the maximum value of 14.88 mg/L under the optimum fermentation conditions. Silkworm pupae powder concentration was 7.5 g/L, with glucose concentration at 30 g/L, and cultural time of 4 d, plus pH value at 6.0.

Objective. This study aimed to investigate emergency nurses’ disaster nursing ability and psychological resilience, validate the effectiveness of a training system for disaster nursing ability based on psychological resilience, and verify the relationship between psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability among emergency nurses. Methods. A training system was developed to enhance psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability. A multicenter, randomized controlled experiment was conducted in five Grade III hospitals in Sichuan Province. A total of 93 emergency nurses were randomly assigned to the following three groups: the blank group, intervention group, and control group. The corresponding interventions were as follows: no intervention, psychological resilience, and nurses’ disaster nursing ability training. Personal information forms, the Connor–Davidson Resiliency Scale, and the Nurses’ Disaster Nursing Ability Assessment Scale were used in the survey. Results. There was no significant difference in the scores of psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability in the blank group in the pretest and posttest (P>0.05). The disaster nursing ability of both the intervention and control groups significantly improved in the posttest (P0.05). Conclusion. The study concluded that the psychological resilience and disaster nursing ability of emergency nurses could be enhanced through the implemented training system.

The gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A, known as the “brightest of all time,” is the closest energetic burst detected so far, with an energy of E _γ _,iso ∼ 10 ^55 erg. This study aims to assess its compatibility with known GRB energy and luminosity distributions. Our analysis indicates that the energy/luminosity function of GRBs is consistent across various redshift intervals, and that the inclusion of GRB 221009A does not significantly impact the function at low redshifts. Additionally, our evaluation of the best-fitting result of the entire GRB sample suggests that the expected number of GRBs with energy greater than 10 ^55 erg at a low redshift is 0.2, so that the emergence of GRB 221009A is consistent with expected energy/luminosity functions within ∼2 σ Poisson fluctuation error, still adhering to the principles of small number statistics. Furthermore, we find that GRB 221009A and other energetic bursts, defined as E _γ _,iso ≳ 10 ^54 erg, exhibit no significant differences in terms of distributions of T _90 , minimum timescale, Amati relation, E _γ _,iso – E _X,iso relation, L _γ _,iso –Γ _0 relation, E _γ _,iso –Γ _0 relation, L _γ _,iso – E _p,i –Γ _0 relation, and host galaxy properties, compared to normal long GRBs. This suggests that energetic GRBs (including GRB 221009A) and other long GRBs likely have similar progenitor systems and undergo similar energy dissipation and radiation processes. The generation of energetic GRBs may be due to more extreme central engine properties or, more likely, a rarer viewing configuration of a quasi-universal structured jet.

ObjectiveCerebral aneurysms are classified as severe cerebrovascular diseases due to hidden and critical onset, which seriously threaten life and health. An effective strategy to control intracranial aneurysms is the regular diagnosis and timely treatment by CT angiography (CTA) imaging technology. However, unpredictable patient movements make it challenging to capture sub-millimeter-level ultra-high resolution images in a CTA scan. In order to improve the doctor's judgment, it is necessary to improve the clarity of the cerebral aneurysm medical image algorithm.MethodsThis paper mainly focuses on researching a three-dimensional medical image super-resolution algorithm applied to cerebral aneurysms. Although some scholars have proposed super-resolution reconstruction methods, there are problems such as poor effect and too much reconstruction time. Therefore, this paper designs a lightweight super-resolution network based on a residual neural network. The residual block structure removes the B.N. layer, which can effectively solve the gradient problem. Considering the high-resolution reconstruction needs to take the complete image as the research object and the fidelity of information, this paper selects the channel domain attention mechanism to improve the performance of the residual neural network.ResultsThe new data set of cerebral aneurysms in this paper was obtained by CTA imaging technology of patients in the Department of neurosurgery, the second affiliated of Guizhou Medical University Hospital. The proposed model was evaluated from objective evaluation, model effect, model performance, and detection comparison. On the brain aneurysm data set, we tested the PSNR and SSIM values of 2 and 4 magnification factors, and the scores of our method were 33.01, 28.39, 33.06, and 28.41, respectively, which were better than those of the traditional SRCNN, ESPCN and FSRCNN. Subsequently, the model is applied to practice in this paper, and the effect, performance index and diagnosis of auxiliary doctors are obtained. The experimental results show that the high-resolution image reconstruction model based on the residual neural network designed in this paper plays a more influential role than other image classification methods. This method has higher robustness, accuracy and intuition.ConclusionWith the wide application of CTA images in the clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysms and the increasing number of application samples, this method is expected to become an additional diagnostic tool that can effectively improve the diagnostic accuracy of cerebral aneurysms.

Abstract In this paper, we discuss a priori error estimates for the finite volume element approximation of optimal control problem governed by Stokes equations. Under some reasonable assumptions, we obtain optimal L 2 $L^{2}$ -norm error estimates. The approximate orders for the state, costate, and control variables are O ( h 2 ) $O(h^{2})$ in the sense of L 2 $L^{2}$ -norm. Furthermore, we derive H 1 $H^{1}$ -norm error estimates for the state and costate variables. Finally, we give some conclusions and future works.

The condyle plays a pivotal role in mandible development, which is regulated by various signaling molecules. The hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is known to modulate several processes during bone formation. However, the role of Gli1, as the read-out of Hh signaling activity, in condylar development and fracture healing has not been clarified. In this study, we discovered that a population of Gli1+ cells residing immediately below the cartilage functions as osteogenic progenitors by using Gli1-CreERT2;tdTomato mice. These Gli1+ cells contributed to nearly all osteoblasts in the subchondral bone during condyle postnatal development. Interestingly, Gli1-lineage cells could differentiate into osteoblasts and chondrocytes during fracture healing. Inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin signaling downregulated the proliferation and differentiation of Gli1+ cells in vitro. These findings suggest that Gli1+ progenitor cells participate in not only normal bone formation but also fracture healing; moreover, these cells may provide a potential target for promoting bone regeneration of the mandible.

Abstract Background Information on HPV-associated sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) is very limited in China. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HPV in a large cohort of SNSCC patients in China. Methods Clinical records and formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tumor specimens from 30 SNSCC patients with associated inverted papilloma (IP-SNSCC) and 84 de novo SNSCC (DN-SNSCC) patients were retrieved between 2010 and 2017. HPV status was determined for each specimen using a combination of p16 immunohistochemistry and GP5+/6+ PCR. Results Immunohistochemistry for p16 was positive in two IP-SNSCC patients (2/30, 6.7%) and in 16 DN-SNSCC patients (16/84, 19.0%). HPV DNA was detected in six IP-SNSCC patients (6/30, 20%) and in three DN-SNSCC patients (3/84, 3.8%). Expression of p16 was not correlated with the presence of HPV DNA (p = 0.150). Among 18 p16-positive SNSCC patients, only three were HPV DNA-positive. Furthermore, only three of nine HPV DNA-positive tumors exhibited high p16 expression. In IP-SNSCC patients, only one of six HPV DNA-positive tumors exhibited high p16 expression. In DN-SNSCC patients, two of three HPV DNA-positive tumors exhibited high p16 expression. The positive rates for both HPV DNA and p16 in IP-SNSCC patients and DN-SNSCC patients were 3.3 and 2.4%, respectively. Conclusions Immunostaining for p16 is not a reliable surrogate marker of HPV status in SNSCC. The presence of HPV is rarely detected in DN-SNSCC patients in Eastern China. IP-SNSCC patients frequently lack of p16 overexpression despite the presence of high-risk HPV DNA.

In the field of computer vision, super-resolution reconstruction techniques based on deep learning have undergone considerable advancement; however, certain limitations remain, such as insufficient feature extraction and blurred image generation. To address these problems, we propose an image super-resolution reconstruction model based on a generative adversarial network. First, we employ a dual network structure in the generator network to solve the problem of insufficient feature extraction. The dual network structure is divided into an upsample subnetwork and a refinement subnetwork, which upsample and optimize a low-resolution image, respectively. In a scene with large upscaling factors, this structure can reduce the negative effect of noise and enhance the utilization of high-frequency details, thereby generating high-quality reconstruction results. Second, to generate sharper super-resolution images, we use the perceptual loss, which exhibits a fast convergence and excellent visual effect, to guide the generator network training. We apply the ResNeXt-50-$32\times 4\text{d}$ network, which has few parameters and a large depth, to calculate the loss to obtain a reconstructed super-resolution image that is highly realistic. Finally, we introduce the Wasserstein distance into the discriminator network to enhance the discrimination ability and stability of the model. Specifically, this distance is employed to eliminate the activation function in the last layer of the network and avoid the use of the logarithm in calculating the loss function. Extensive experiments on the DIV2K, Set5, Set14, and BSD100 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Objective: This retrospective study aimed to analyze the ultrasound (US) imaging features of solitary papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) located in the isthmus and to assess the risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) and tumor capsular invasion.Methods: We included a total of 135 patients with solitary PTC located in the isthmus. All the cases underwent US, total thyroidectomy, and prophylactic central lymph node dissection. Patients' demographic and thyroid isthmus nodules' US characteristics, as well as risk factors associated with LNM and tumor capsular invasion, were analyzed.Results: It was revealed that the occurrence of LNM was higher in male patients than in female patients (P < 0.001). As risk factors, the size of PTC in the isthmus was found to be associated with LNM and tumor capsular invasion (P = 0.005 and 0.000, respectively). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the size of the isthmus PTC was 0.64 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.55–0.72], indicating a probability for LNM. The AUC value for tumor capsular invasion was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.68–0.83). When the threshold was set to 1.1 cm, the larger size indicated that there was a probability of occurrence of LNM with sensitivity and specificity of 47.4 and 73.7%, respectively. When the threshold was set to 0.7 cm, the larger size indicated that there was potentially a tumor capsular invasion, with sensitivity and specificity of 80.6 and 56.3%, respectively. Wider-than-tall nodules were found to be significantly different from those in LNM and tumor capsular invasion (P = 0.038 and 0.030, respectively). There were significant differences in tumor capsular invasion in extrathyroidal extension (ETE) compared with smooth or ill-defined and lobulated or irregular nodules (P = 0.017).Conclusions: This study showed that the incidence of LNM in male patients was higher than that in female ones. When a US image shows a thyroid isthmus nodule with a wider-than-tall shape, LNM and tumor capsular invasion were likely to occur. When a US image shows a thyroid isthmus nodule with an ETE, tumor capsular invasion was likely to occur. ETE and wider-than-tall may be indicators of FNA under US guidance, even though the size of thyroid isthmus nodule may be

Variants in the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene play an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Specifically, the APOE ε4 allele is an established genetic risk factor for AD, while the APOE ε2 allele is a protective factor against AD. However, the mechanism underlying this impact of APOE genotype on the pathogenesis of AD remain unclear. This study sought to investigate the influence of APOE genotype on cognition and neuroimaging features in cognitively normal (CN) elderly individuals and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A total of 177 participants were selected from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, including 101 MCI patients and 76 CN individuals. A 2 × 3 (consisting of two groups and three APOE genotypes) analysis of covariance was carried out to measure the influences of diagnosis and APOE genotype on cognition and brain features, assessed based on global functional connectivity density (gFCD) and hippocampal volume. In addition, a mediation analysis was carried out to investigate the indirect influence of neuroimaging features on the relationship between APOE genotype and cognitive performance in the MCI group. This analysis revealed that APOE genotype had an influence on brain function in the bilateral precentral gyrus, right thalamus, and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). In addition, an interactive influence between diagnosis and APOE genotype was found on general cognition, immediate memory, executive function, hippocampal volume, and gFCD in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). Finally, this mediation analysis revealed that hippocampal volume and gFCD in the thalamus may mediate the relationship between APOE genotype and cognitive performance in the MCI group. Taken together, our findings provide novel insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the genetically guided pathogenic mechanisms of AD.

CD33 is a susceptibility locus for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, how the neural mechanism of CD33 affects cognition in the AD spectrum population remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the primary and interactive effects of the CD33 (rs3865444) genotype on brain function in patients with AD using global functional connectivity density (gFCD) mapping via resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Furthermore, we used a conditional process analysis to identify the relationship among the CD33 genotype, gFCD, and cognition performance across the AD spectrum population. Compared to cognitively normal (CN) and mild cognitively impaired (MCI) subjects, patients with AD showed higher gFCD in the default mode network, and the CD33 genotype primarily influenced brain function in the fronto-striatal circuit. Importantly, an interaction between the CD33 genotype and AD was observed in the parahippocampal gyrus. During disease progression, the gFCD trajectories of the CD33 A + allele gradually decreased, whereas those of the CD33 CC allele displayed an inverted U-shaped curve. Furthermore, gFCD in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex positively mediated the relationship between the CD33 genotype and cognition, while gFCD in the precuneus bidirectionally moderated the mediation in the AD spectrum. These findings provide new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the influence of the CD33 genotype on cognitive performance and highlight the importance of precise therapeutic strategies for high-risk AD populations.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a heterogeneous disease. Exploring the characteristics of each AD subtype is the key to disentangling the heterogeneity. Minimal atrophy AD (MAD) is a common AD subtype that yields conflicting results. In order to evaluate this aspect across relatively large heterogeneous AD populations, a total of 192 AD and 228 cognitively normal (CN) subjects were processed by the automated segmentation scheme FreeSurfer, which generates regional cortical thickness measures. A machine learning driven approach, the mixture of expert models, which combines unsupervised modeling of mixtures of distributions with supervised learning of classifiers, was applied to approximates the non-linear boundary between AD and CN subjects with a piece-wise linear boundary. Multiple cortical thicknes patterns of AD were discovered, which includes: bilateral parietal/frontal atrophy AD, left temporal dominant atrophy AD, MAD, and diffuse atrophy AD. MAD had the highest proportions of ApoE4 and ApoE2. Further analysis revealed that ApoE genotype, disease stage and their interactions can partially explain the conflicting observations in MAD.

Microorganisms in sediments are an important part of the aquatic ecosystem, and their functional activities are sensitive to external environmental pressure. Shallow lakes are characterized by frequent sediment resuspension events, leading to large amounts of nutrients being released. However, information about the potential impacts of sediment resuspension events on the functional activities of microbial communities is limited. In this study, the responses of microbial carbon metabolism in sediments under different wind–wave disturbance were analyzed by BIOLOG ECO microplates. The results showed that under four disturbance conditions (wind speeds of 0, 1.60, 3.62, and 14.10 m/s), the total carbon metabolism function of the sediment microbial community (represented as average well-color development, AWCD) remained unchanged (p > 0.05), and the final total AWCD value stabilized at about 1.70. However, compared with the control group, some specific carbon sources (e.g., amines and carboxylic acids) showed significant changes (p < 0.05). We found that short-term (8 h) resuspension events did not affect the total carbon metabolism of sediment microbial communities, while it affected the microbial utilization ability of some specific types of carbon sources. For example, we found that the microbial utilization capacity of polymers in the 14.10 m/s group was the best. This study provides a new insight into the carbon cycle process of shallow lake sediments that resuspension events will affect the carbon cycle process of sediments.
