Abstract

We have determined the electronic and atomic structure of N doped TiO2 using a combination of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and first- principles density functional theory calculations. Our results reveal that N doping of TiO2 leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies and the combination of both N impurity and oxygen vacancies accounts for the observed visible light catalytic behavior of N doped TiO2., Comment: 13 pages with 5 figures

Abstract

Germanene has attracted significant attention due to its novel electronic properties and strong spin-coupling effect. However, the tiny band gap of the germanene dramatically limits its application in field-effect transistors (FETs). Inspired by the utilization of the substrates and electric fields to adjust the band gaps of two-dimensional materials, we investigated the fundamental mechanism of electric fields on the atomic structures and electronic properties of germanene supported by MS2 (M = Mo or W) substrates through first-principles calculation. The results show that the substrates can induce a symmetry breaking in the germanene sublattice via van der Waals interaction, leading to a sizable band gap at the Dirac point. In addition, the band gaps of the germanene/MS2 heterostructures can be effectively modulated by applying an external electric field. Under suitable electric fields, the considerable band gap values of CMo germanene/MoS2 and TGeL-W germanene/WS2 configurations can open the maximum band gaps with 263 and 247 meV, which satisfy the requirements of FETs at room temperature. Meanwhile, the evolutions of charge transfers under electric fields were explored to illustrate how electric fields and substrates promote the electronic properties of germanene. More interestingly, a Schottky–Ohmic transition can occur when a specific electric field is imposed on the germanene/MS2 heterostructures. Note that the hole and electron carrier mobilities of germanene/MS2 heterostructures are still significantly preserved, showing some superior electronic performances than some heterostructures. The results provide a critical theoretical guide for improving the electronic properties of germanene, and demonstrate the designed germanene/MS2 heterostructures with the tunable band gaps and higher carrier mobilities as germanene-based FETs. Abstract

Human trophoblast progenitor cells differentiate via two distinct pathways, to become the highly invasive extravillous cytotrophoblast (CTB) cells (EVT) or fuse to form syncytiotrophoblast. Inadequate trophoblast differentiation results in poor placenta perfusion, or even complications such as pre-eclampsia (PE). Cullin1 (CUL1), a scaffold protein in cullin-based ubiquitin ligases, plays an important role in early embryonic development. However, the role of CUL1 in trophoblast differentiation during placenta development has not been examined. Here we show that CUL1 was expressed in CTB cells and EVT in the first trimester human placentas by immunohistochemistry. CUL1 siRNA significantly inhibited outgrowth of extravillous explants in vitro, as well as invasion and migration of HTR8/SVneo cells of EVT origin. This inhibition was accompanied by decreased gelatinolytic activities of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and increased expression of tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMP-1 and -2). Consistently, exogenous CUL1 promoted invasion and migration of HTR8/SVneo cells. Notably, CUL1 was gradually decreased during trophoblast syncytialization and CUL1 siRNA significantly enhanced forskolin-induced fusion of choriocarcinoma BeWo cells. CUL1 protein levels in human pre-eclamptic placental villi were significantly lower as compared to their matched control placentas. Taken together, our results suggest that CUL1 promotes human trophoblast cell invasion and dysregulation of CUL1 expression may be associated with PE.

Abstract

The transferability and clinical value of genetic risk scores (GRSs) across populations remain limited due to an imbalance in genetic studies across ancestrally diverse populations. Here we conducted a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of 156,319 prostate cancer cases and 788,443 controls of European, African, Asian and Hispanic men, reflecting a 57% increase in the number of non-European cases over previous prostate cancer genome-wide association studies. We identified 187 novel risk variants for prostate cancer, increasing the total number of risk variants to 451. An externally replicated multi-ancestry GRS was associated with risk that ranged from 1.8 (per standard deviation) in African ancestry men to 2.2 in European ancestry men. The GRS was associated with a greater risk of aggressive versus non-aggressive disease in men of African ancestry (P = 0.03). Our study presents novel prostate cancer susceptibility loci and a GRS with effective risk stratification across ancestry groups.

Abstract

Consulting the best available evidence is key to successful conservation decision-making. While much scientific evidence on conservation continues to be published in non-English languages, a poor understanding of how non-English-language science contributes to conservation decision-making is causing global assessments and studies to practically ignore non-English-language literature. By investigating the use of scientific literature in biodiversity assessment reports across 37 countries/territories, we have uncovered the established role of non-English-language literature as a major source of information locally. On average, non-English-language literature constituted 65% of the references cited, and these were recognized as relevant knowledge sources by 75% of report authors. This means that by ignoring non-English-language science, international assessments may overlook important information on local and/or regional biodiversity. Furthermore, a quarter of the authors acknowledged the struggles of understanding English-language literature. This points to the need to aid the use of English-language literature in domestic decision-making, for example, by providing non-English-language abstracts or improving and/or implementing machine translation. 21. How do natural changes in flow magnitude affect fish abundance and biomass in temperate regions? A systematic review

Abstract

1. We conducted a systematic review on the impacts of natural causes of variation or changes in flow magnitude (resulting from climatic variability and broad-scale drivers such as climate-induced change) on fish abundance and biomass in temperate regions. 2. Following our systematic review protocol (Birnie-Gauvin et al., 2021), we examined commercially published and grey literature originally identified during a recent systematic map process (Rytwinski et al., 2020) and a systematic search update. Articles were screened using an a priori eligibility criteria, with consistency checks performed at the title and abstract, and full text screening stages. All eligible articles were assessed for study validity. A narrative synthesis included all available evidence (300 studies from 219 articles), and meta-analyses (1863 datasets from 193 studies) were conducted where appropriate. 3. Most studies were conducted in the United States (65%) on genera in the Salmonidae and Leuciscidae families (29% and 28%, respectively), and mainly investigated variation in flow magnitude, followed by droughts and floods. 4. We found that fish abundance and biomass responses to changes in natural flow magnitude were mainly negative, but analyses do not support clear generalizable signals across all contexts (e.g. types of changes in flow magnitude, taxa, locations). When exploring reasons for heterogeneity in effect sizes, we found a detectable effect of intervention type on average fish abundance within the first year of the natural change in flow magnitude, with floods and droughts associated with overall negative responses. However, these patterns were more variable when considering between-year variation or specific taxonomic responses. 5.
