Abstract Thermoelectrics converting heat and electricity directly attract broad attentions. To enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, one of the key points is to decouple the carrier-phonon transport. Here, we propose an entropy engineering strategy to realize the carrier-phonon decoupling in the typical SrTiO3-based perovskite thermoelectrics. By high-entropy design, the lattice thermal conductivity could be reduced nearly to the amorphous limit, 1.25 W m−1 K−1. Simultaneously, entropy engineering can tune the Ti displacement, improving the weighted mobility to 65 cm2 V−1 s−1. Such carrier-phonon decoupling behaviors enable the greatly enhanced μ W/κ L of ~5.2 × 103 cm3 K J−1 V−1. The measured maximum zT of 0.24 at 488 K and the estimated zT of ~0.8 at 1173 K in (Sr0.2Ba0.2Ca0.2Pb0.2La0.2)TiO3 film are among the best of n-type thermoelectric oxides. These results reveal that the entropy engineering may be a promising strategy to decouple the carrier-phonon transport and achieve higher zT in thermoelectrics.

Abstract The development of highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is crucial for achieving high-performance practical anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) at ampere-level current density. Herein, we report a design concept by employing Ga single atoms as an electronic bridge to stabilize the Ru clusters for boosting alkaline HER performance in practical AEMWE. Experimental and theoretical results collectively reveal that the bridged Ga sites trigger strong metal-support interaction for the homogeneous distribution of Ru clusters with high density, as well as optimize the Ru–H bond strength due to the electron transfer between Ru and Ga for enhanced intrinsic HER activity. Moreover, the oxophilic Ga sites near the Ru clusters tend to adsorb the hydroxyl species and accelerate the water dissociation for sufficient proton supplement in an alkaline medium. The Ru–GaSA/N–C catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 4 ± 1 mV (10 mA cm−2) and high mass activity of 9.3 ± 0.5 A mg−1 Ru at −0.05 V vs RHE. In particular, the Ru–GaSA/N–C-based AEMWE in 1 M KOH delivers a voltage of only 1.74 V to reach an industrial current density of 1 A cm−2, and can steadily operate at 1 A cm−2 for more than 170 h.

Abstract Magnons, bosonic quasiparticles carrying angular momentum, can flow through insulators for information transmission with minimal power dissipation. However, it remains challenging to develop a magnon-based logic due to the lack of efficient electrical manipulation of magnon transport. Here we show the electric excitation and control of multiferroic magnon modes in a spin-source/multiferroic/ferromagnet structure. We demonstrate that the ferroelectric polarization can electrically modulate the magnon-mediated spin-orbit torque by controlling the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure in multiferroic bismuth ferrite thin films with coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. In this multiferroic magnon torque device, magnon information is encoded to ferromagnetic bits by the magnon-mediated spin torque. By manipulating the two coupled non-volatile state variables—ferroelectric polarization and magnetization—we further present reconfigurable logic operations in a single device. Our findings highlight the potential of multiferroics for controlling magnon information transport and offer a pathway towards room-temperature voltage-controlled, low-power, scalable magnonics for in-memory computing.

Abstract Challenges in direct catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived aldehyde and alcohol into acid with high activity and selectivity hinder the widespread biomass application. Herein, we demonstrate that a Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst with abundant Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces allows electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid with a selectivity near 100 % and 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid yield of 97.3% at 0.6 volts (versus a reversible hydrogen electrode) in 1 M KOH electrolyte under ambient conditions. The rate-determining step of the intermediate oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid is promoted by the increased OH species and low C–H activation energy barrier at Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces. Further, the Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces prevent the agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles during the reaction, greatly improving the stability of the catalyst. In this work, Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst can achieve 100% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural conversion and >90% 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid selectivity in a flow-cell and work stably over 200 h under a fixed cell voltage of 0.85 V.

Abstract Multichannel meta-imaging, inspired by the parallel-processing capability of neuromorphic computing, offers considerable advancements in resolution enhancement and edge discrimination in imaging systems, extending even into the mid- to far-infrared spectrum. Currently typical multichannel infrared imaging systems consist of separating optical gratings or merging multi-cameras, which require complex circuit design and heavy power consumption, hindering the implementation of advanced human-eye-like imagers. Here, we present printable graphene plasmonic photodetector arrays driven by a ferroelectric superdomain for multichannel meta-infrared imaging with enhanced edge discrimination. The fabricated photodetectors exhibited multiple spectral responses with zero-bias operation by directly rescaling the ferroelectric superdomain instead of reconstructing the separated gratings. We also demonstrated enhanced and faster shape classification (98.1%) and edge detection (98.2%) using our multichannel infrared images compared with single-channel detectors. Our proof-of-concept photodetector arrays simplify multichannel infrared imaging systems and offer potential solutions in efficient edge detection in human-brain-type machine vision.

Abstract The risk of cholangitis after ERCP implantation in malignant obstructive jaundice patients remains unknown. To develop models based on artificial intelligence methods to predict cholangitis risk more accurately, according to patients after stent implantation in patients’ MOJ clinical data. This retrospective study included 218 patients with MOJ undergoing ERCP surgery. A total of 27 clinical variables were collected as input variables. Seven models (including univariate analysis and six machine learning models) were trained and tested for classified prediction. The model’ performance was measured by AUROC. The RFT model demonstrated excellent performances with accuracies up to 0.86 and AUROC up to 0.87. Feature selection in RF and SHAP was similar, and the choice of the best variable subset produced a high performance with an AUROC up to 0.89. We have developed a hybrid machine learning model with better predictive performance than traditional LR prediction models, as well as other machine learning models for cholangitis based on simple clinical data. The model can assist doctors in clinical diagnosis, adopt reasonable treatment plans, and improve the survival rate of patients.

Abstract FeSe is one of the most enigmatic superconductors. Among the family of iron-based compounds, it has the simplest chemical makeup and structure, and yet it displays superconducting transition temperature ( T c $T_{\text{c}}$ ) spanning 0 to 15 K for thin films, while it is typically 8 K for single crystals. This large variation of T c $T_{\text{c}}$ within one family underscores a key challenge associated with understanding superconductivity in iron chalcogenides. Here, using a dual-beam pulsed laser deposition (PLD) approach, we have fabricated a unique lattice-constant gradient thin film of FeSe which has revealed a clear relationship between the atomic structure and the superconducting transition temperature for the first time. The dual-beam PLD that generates laser fluence gradient inside the plasma plume has resulted in a continuous variation in distribution of edge dislocations within a single film, and a precise correlation between the lattice constant and T c $T_{\text{c}}$ has been observed here, namely, T c ∝ c − c 0 $T_{\text{c}} \propto \sqrt{c- c_{0}}$ , where c is the c-axis lattice constant (and c 0 $c_{0}$ is a constant). This explicit relation in conjunction with a theoretical investigation indicates that it is the shifting of the d xy $d_{\text{xy}}$ orbital of Fe which plays a governing role in the interplay between nematicity and superconductivity in FeSe.

Abstract Molybdenum and its alloys are known for their superior strength among body-centered cubic materials. However, their widespread application is hindered by a significant decrease in ductility at lower temperatures. In this study, we demonstrate the achievement of exceptional ductility in a Mo alloy containing rare-earth La2O3 nanoparticles through rotary-swaging, a rarity in Mo-based materials. Our analysis reveals that the large ductility originates from substantial variations in the electronic density of states, a characteristic intrinsic to rare-earth elements. This characteristic can accelerate the generation of oxygen vacancies, facilitating the amorphization of the oxide-matrix interface. This process promotes vacancy absorption and modification of dislocation configurations. Furthermore, by inducing irregular shapes in the La2O3 nanoparticles through rotary-swaging, incoming dislocations interact with them, creating multiple dislocation sources near the interface. These dislocation sources act as potent initiators at even reduced temperatures, fostering diverse dislocation types and intricate networks, ultimately enhancing dislocation plasticity.

Abstract Biological nervous system outperforms in both dynamic and static information perception due to their capability to integrate the sensing, memory and processing functions. Reconfigurable neuromorphic transistors, which can be used to emulate different types of biological analogues in a single device, are important for creating compact and efficient neuromorphic computing networks, but their design remains challenging due to the need for opposing physical mechanisms to achieve different functions. Here we report a neuromorphic electrolyte-gated transistor that can be reconfigured to perform physical reservoir and synaptic functions. The device exhibits dynamics with tunable time-scales under optical and electrical stimuli. The nonlinear volatile property is suitable for reservoir computing, which can be used for multimodal pre-processing. The nonvolatility and programmability of the device through ion insertion/extraction achieved via electrolyte gating, which are required to realize synaptic functions, are verified. The device’s superior performance in mimicking human perception of dynamic and static multisensory information based on the reconfigurable neuromorphic functions is also demonstrated. The present study provides an exciting paradigm for the realization of multimodal reconfigurable devices and opens an avenue for mimicking biological multisensory fusion.

Abstract Background Glutamatergic function abnormalities have been implicated in the etiology of treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), and the efficacy of clozapine may be attributed to its impact on the glutamate system. Recently, evidence has emerged suggesting the involvement of immune processes and increased prevalence of antineuronal antibodies in TRS. This current study aimed to investigate the levels of multiple anti-glutamate receptor antibodies in TRS and explore the effects of clozapine on these antibody levels. Methods Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure and compare the levels of anti-glutamate receptor antibodies (NMDAR, AMPAR, mGlur3, mGluR5) in clozapine-treated TRS patients (TRS-C, n = 37), clozapine-naïve TRS patients (TRS-NC, n = 39), and non-TRS patients (nTRS, n = 35). Clinical symptom severity was assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS), while cognitive function was evaluated using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Anisotropic microstructures resulting from a well-ordered arrangement of filamentous extracellular matrix (ECM) components or cells can be found throughout the human body, including skeletal muscle, corneal stroma, and meniscus, which play a crucial role in carrying out specialized physiological functions. At present, due to the isotropic characteristics of conventional hydrogels, the construction of freeform cell-laden anisotropic structures with high-bioactive hydrogels is still a great challenge. Here, we proposed a method for direct embedded 3D cell-printing of freeform anisotropic structure with shear-oriented bioink (GelMA/PEO). This study focuses on the establishment of an anisotropic embedded 3D bioprinting system, which effectively utilizes the shear stress generated during the extrusion process to create cells encapsulating tissues with distinct anisotropy. In conjunction with the water-solubility of PEO and the in-situ encapsulation effect provided by the carrageenan support bath, high-precise cell-laden bioprinting of intricate anisotropic and porous bionic artificial tissues can be effectively implemented in one-step. Additionally, anisotropic permeable blood vessel has been taken as a representation to validate the effectiveness of the shear-oriented bioink system in fabricating intricate structures with distinct directional characteristics. Lastly, the successful preparation of muscle patches with anisotropic properties and their guiding role for cell cytoskeleton extension have provided a significant research foundation for the application of the anisotropic embedded 3D bioprinting system in the ex-vivo production and in-vivo application of anisotropic artificial tissues.

Abstract Recent progress on the signatures of pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity in Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) nickelates (La n+1Ni n O3n+1) has attracted growing interest in both theoretical calculations and experimental efforts. The fabrication of high-quality single-crystalline RP nickelate thin films is critical for possible reducing the superconducting transition pressure and advancing applications in microelectronics in the future. In this study, we report the observations of an active phase transition in RP nickelate films induced by misfit strain. We found that RP nickelate films favor the perovskite structure (n = ∞) under tensile strains, while compressive strains stabilize the La3Ni2O7 (n = 2) phase. The selection of distinct phases is governed by the strain dependent formation energy and electronic configuration. In compressively strained La3Ni2O7, we experimentally determined the e g splitting energy is ~0.2 eV and electrons prefer to occupy in-plane orbitals. First-principles calculations unveil a robust coupling between strain effects and the valence state of Ni ions in RP nickelates, suggesting a dual driving force for the inevitable phase co-existence transition in RP nickelates. Our work underscores the sensitivity of RP nickelate formation to epitaxial strain, presenting a significant challenge in fabricating pure-phase RP nickelate films. Therefore, special attention to stacking defects and grain boundaries between different RP phases is essential when discussing the pressure-induced superconductivity in RP nickelates.

Abstract High-performance active terahertz modulators as the indispensable core components are of great importance for the next generation communication technology. However, they currently suffer from the tradeoff between modulation depth and speed. Here, we introduce two-dimensional (2D) tellurium (Te) nanofilms with the unique structure as a new class of optically controlled terahertz modulators and demonstrate their integrated heterojunctions can successfully improve the device performances to the optimal and applicable levels among the existing all-2D broadband modulators. Further photoresponse measurements confirm the significant impact of the stacking order. We first clarify the direction of the substrate-induced electric field through first-principles calculations and uncover the unusual interaction mechanism in the photoexcited carrier dynamics associated with the charge transfer and interlayer exciton recombination. This advances the fundamental and applicative research of Te nanomaterials in high-performance terahertz optoelectronics.

Abstract The direct oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions is challenging owing to its inadequate activity and low selectivity. A key objective is improving the selective oxidation of the first carbon-hydrogen bond of methane, while inhibiting the oxidation of the remaining carbon-hydrogen bonds to ensure high yield and selectivity of methanol. Here we design ultrathin PdxAuy nanosheets and revealed a volcano-type relationship between the binding strength of hydroxyl radical on the catalyst surface and catalytic performance using experimental and density functional theory results. Our investigations indicate a trade-off relationship between the reaction-triggering and reaction-conversion steps in the reaction process. The optimized Pd3Au1 nanosheets exhibits a methanol production rate of 147.8 millimoles per gram of Pd per hour, with a selectivity of 98% at 70 °C, representing one of the most efficient catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane to methanol.

The presence of veterinary drug residues in aquatic products represents a significant challenge to food safety. The current detection methods, limited in both scope and sensitivity, underscore the urgent need for more advanced techniques. This research introduces a swift and potent screening technique using high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) and a refined QuEChERS protocol, allowing simultaneous qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of 192 residues. A comprehensive database, employing full scan mode and data-dependent secondary mass spectroscopy, enhances screening accuracy. The method involves efficient extraction using 90% acetonitrile, dehydration with Na2SO4, and acetic acid, followed by cleanup using dispersive solid-phase extract sorbent primary secondary amine. It is suitable for samples with varying fat content, offering detection limits ranging from 0.5 to 10 μg/kg, high recovery rates (60–120%), and low relative standard deviations (

The carcinogenic and teratogenic risks of nitrofurazone (NFZ) led to its restriction in aquatic products. Semicarbazide (SEM), one of its metabolites, is a primary focus of modern monitoring techniques. However, the SEM residue in aquatic products is believed to be formed through endogenous mechanisms, especially for aquatic crustaceans. In this article, we will discuss the source of SEM, including its usage as an antibiotic in aquatic products (nitrofurazone), its production during food processing (azodicarbonamide and hypochlorite treatment), its occurrence naturally in the body, and its intake from the environment. SEM detection techniques were divided into three groups: derivatization, extraction/purification, and analytical methods. Applications based on liquid chromatography and its tandem mass spectrometry, immunoassay, and electrochemical methods were outlined, as were the use of various derivatives and their assisted derivatization, as well as extraction and purification techniques based on liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction. The difficulties of implementing SEM for nitrofurazone monitoring in aquatic products from crustaceans are also discussed. Possible new markers and methods for detecting them are discussed. Finally, the present research on monitoring illicit nitrofurazone usage through its metabolites is summarised, and potential problems that need to be overcome by continuing research are proposed with an eye toward giving references for future studies.

Abstract Reservoir computing can more efficiently be used to solve time-dependent tasks than conventional feedforward network owing to various advantages, such as easy training and low hardware overhead. Physical reservoirs that contain intrinsic nonlinear dynamic processes could serve as next-generation dynamic computing systems. High-efficiency reservoir systems require nonlinear and dynamic responses to distinguish time-series input data. Herein, an interface-type dynamic transistor gated by an Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) film was introduced to perform reservoir computing. The channel conductance of Mott material La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) can effectively be modulated by taking advantage of the unique coupled property of the polarization process and oxygen migration in hafnium-based ferroelectrics. The large positive value of the oxygen vacancy formation energy and negative value of the oxygen affinity energy resulted in the spontaneous migration of accumulated oxygen ions in the HZO films to the channel, leading to the dynamic relaxation process. The modulation of the channel conductance was found to be closely related to the current state, identified as the origin of the nonlinear response. In the time series recognition and prediction tasks, the proposed reservoir system showed an extremely low decision-making error. This work provides a promising pathway for exploiting dynamic ion systems for high-performance neural network devices.

Abstract The interplay between topology and interaction always plays an important role in condensed matter physics and induces many exotic quantum phases, while rare transition metal layered material (TMLM) has been proved to possess both. Here we report a TMLM Ta2Pd3Te5 has the two-dimensional second-order topology (also a quadrupole topological insulator) with correlated edge states - Luttinger liquid. It is ascribed to the unconventional nature of the mismatch between charge- and atomic- centers induced by a remarkable double-band inversion. This one-dimensional protected edge state preserves the Luttinger liquid behavior with robustness and universality in scale from micro- to macro- size, leading to a significant anisotropic electrical transport through two-dimensional sides of bulk materials. Moreover, the bulk gap can be modulated by the thickness, resulting in an extensive-range phase diagram for Luttinger liquid. These provide an attractive model to study the interaction and quantum phases in correlated topological systems.

Abstract Ligand effect, induced by charge transfer between catalytic surface and substrate in core/shell structure, was widely proved to benefit Pt-catalyzed oxygen reduction reaction by tuning the position of d-band center of Pt theoretically. However, ligand effect is always convoluted by strain effect in real core/shell nanostructure; therefore, it remains experimentally unknown whether and how much the ligand effect solely contributes electrocatalytic activity improvements. Herein, we report precise synthesis of a kind of Pd3Ru1/Pt core/shell nanoplates with exclusive ligand effect for oxygen reduction reaction. Layer-by-layer growth of Pt overlayers onto Pd3Ru1 nanoplates can guarantee no lattice mismatch between core and shell because the well-designed Pd3Ru1 has the same lattice parameters as Pt. Electron transfer, due to the exclusive ligand effect, from Pd3Ru1 to Pt leads to a downshift of d-band center of Pt. The optimal Pd3Ru1/Pt1-2L nanoplates achieve excellent activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline/acid electrolyte.

The interfaces between the electrode and solid‐state electrolyte play a decisive role in the performance of all‐solid‐state batteries. For example, the formation of the interphase between cathode and solid‐state electrolyte can affect interfacial impedance and thus the rate capability. Herein, the thermal stability at the solid–solid interface between LiMn2O4 cathode and garnet electrolyte LLZTO via combined in situ techniques is studied, including in situ X‐Ray diffraction, in situ transmission electron microscopy, and in situ Raman. The dynamic process of interfacial reaction at different scales is elucidated. Starting from 300 °C, Mn ions from LiMn2O4 would migrate into the solid‐state electrolyte, accompanied with the formation of LiMn3O4 interphase. As the temperature increases to 500 °C, the LiMn3O4 interphase transforms to MnO structure which hinders Li‐ion transportation and therefore increases the interfacial impedance. Although both LiMn2O4 and LLZTO could withstand continuous heating, their interface is inherently thermally unstable at relatively low temperature, which requires special attention during thermal treatment for practical fabrication. Findings provide mechanistic insights into the interfacial reaction which serves as a guidance for the design and manufacturing of all‐solid‐state batteries.

Abstract Understanding the structural origin of the competition between oxygen 2p and transition‐metal 3d orbitals in oxygen‐redox (OR) layered oxides is eminently desirable for exploring reversible and high‐energy‐density Li/Na‐ion cathodes. Here, we reveal the correlation between cationic ordering transition and OR degradation in ribbon‐ordered P3‐Na0.6Li0.2Mn0.8O2 via in situ structural analysis. Comparing two different voltage windows, the OR capacity can be improved approximately twofold when suppressing the in‐plane cationic ordering transition. We find that the intralayer cationic migration is promoted by electrochemical reduction from Mn4+ to Jahn–Teller Mn3+ and the concomitant NaO6 stacking transformation from triangular prisms to octahedra, resulting in the loss of ribbon ordering and electrochemical decay. First‐principles calculations reveal that Mn4+/Mn3+ charge ordering and alignment of the degenerate eg orbital induce lattice‐level collective Jahn–Teller distortion, which favors intralayer Mn‐ion migration and thereby accelerates OR degradation. These findings unravel the relationship between in‐plane cationic ordering and OR reversibility and highlight the importance of superstructure protection for the rational design of reversible OR‐active layered oxide cathodes.

Abstract Excitons, which represent a type of quasi-particles consisting of electron-hole pairs bound by the mutual Coulomb interaction, are often observed in lowly-doped semiconductors or insulators. However, realizing excitons in semiconductors or insulators with high charge-carrier densities is challenging. Here, we perform infrared spectroscopy, electrical transport, ab initio calculations, and angle-resolved-photoemission spectroscopy study of the van der Waals degenerate-semiconductor Bi4O4SeCl2. A peak-like feature (α peak) is present around ~125 meV in the optical conductivity spectra at low temperature T = 8 K and room temperature. After being excluded from the optical excitations of free carriers, interband transitions, localized states and polarons, the α peak is assigned as an exciton absorption. Assuming the existence of weakly-bound Wannier-type excitons in this material violates the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation. Moreover, the exciton binding energy of ~375 meV, which is about an order of magnitude larger than those of conventional semiconductors, and the charge-carrier concentration of ~1.25 × 1019 cm−3, which is higher than the Mott density, further indicate that the excitons in this highly-doped system should be tightly bound. Our results pave the way for developing optoelectronic devices based on tightly bound and room-temperature-stable excitons in highly-doped van der Waals degenerate semiconductors.

Abstract The interplay among symmetry of lattices, electronic correlations, and Berry phase of the Bloch states in solids has led to fascinating quantum phases of matter. A prototypical system is the magnetic Weyl candidate SrRuO3, where designing and creating electronic and topological properties on artificial lattice geometry is highly demanded yet remains elusive. Here, we establish an emergent trigonal structure of SrRuO3 by means of heteroepitaxial strain engineering along the [111] crystallographic axis. Distinctive from bulk, the trigonal SrRuO3 exhibits a peculiar XY-type ferromagnetic ground state, with the coexistence of high-mobility holes likely from linear Weyl bands and low-mobility electrons from normal quadratic bands as carriers. The presence of Weyl nodes are further corroborated by capturing intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, acting as momentum-space sources of Berry curvatures. The experimental observations are consistent with our first-principles calculations, shedding light on the detailed band topology of trigonal SrRuO3 with multiple pairs of Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Our findings signify the essence of magnetism and Berry phase manipulation via lattice design and pave the way towards unveiling nontrivial correlated topological phenomena.

Abstract Josephson tunneling in twisted cuprate junctions provides a litmus test for the pairing symmetry, which is fundamental for understanding the microscopic mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. This issue is rekindled by experimental advances in van der Waals stacking and the proposal of an emergent d+id-wave. So far, all experiments have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) with double CuO2 planes but show controversial results. Here, we investigate junctions made of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+y (Bi-2201) with single CuO2 planes. Our on-site cold stacking technique ensures uncompromised crystalline quality and stoichiometry at the interface. Junctions with carefully calibrated twist angles around 45° show strong Josephson tunneling and conventional temperature dependence. Furthermore, we observe standard Fraunhofer diffraction patterns and integer Fiske steps in a junction with a twist angle of 45.0±0.2°. Together, these results pose strong constraints on the d or d+id-wave pairing and suggest an indispensable isotropic pairing component.

Abstract Solomon rings, upholding the symbol of wisdom with profound historical roots, were widely used as decorations in ancient architecture and clothing. However, it was only recently discovered that such topological structures can be formed by self-organization in biological/chemical molecules, liquid crystals, etc. Here, we report the observation of polar Solomon rings in a ferroelectric nanocrystal, which consist of two intertwined vortices and are mathematically equivalent to a $${4}_{1}^{2}$$ 4 1 2 link in topology. By combining piezoresponse force microscopy observations and phase-field simulations, we demonstrate the reversible switching between polar Solomon rings and vertex textures by an electric field. The two types of topological polar textures exhibit distinct absorption of terahertz infrared waves, which can be exploited in infrared displays with a nanoscale resolution. Our study establishes, both experimentally and computationally, the existence and electrical manipulation of polar Solomon rings, a new form of topological polar structures that may provide a simple way for fast, robust, and high-resolution optoelectronic devices.

Abstract The discovery of magnetic order in atomically-thin van der Waals materials has strengthened the alliance between spintronics and two-dimensional materials. An important use of magnetic two-dimensional materials in spintronic devices, which has not yet been demonstrated, would be for coherent spin injection via the spin-pumping effect. Here, we report spin pumping from Cr2Ge2Te6 into Pt or W and detection of the spin current by inverse spin Hall effect. The magnetization dynamics of the hybrid Cr2Ge2Te6/Pt system are measured, and a magnetic damping constant of ~ 4–10 × 10−4 is obtained for thick Cr2Ge2Te6 flakes, a record low for ferromagnetic van der Waals materials. Moreover, a high interface spin transmission efficiency (a spin mixing conductance of 2.4 × 1019/m2) is directly extracted, which is instrumental in delivering spin-related quantities such as spin angular momentum and spin-orbit torque across an interface of the van der Waals system. The low magnetic damping that promotes efficient spin current generation together with high interfacial spin transmission efficiency suggests promising applications for integrating Cr2Ge2Te6 into low-temperature two-dimensional spintronic devices as the source of coherent spin or magnon current.

Abstract Background Low-grade inflammation and altered inflammatory markers have been observed in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of the pro-inflammatory cytokines linked with TRS and receives increasing attention. Previous studies showed that patients with TRS might have higher IL-6 levels compared with healthy individuals and treatment-responsive patients. Besides, emerging evidence has suggested that there are sex differences in the associations between IL-6 levels and various illnesses, including chronic hepatitis C, metabolic syndrome, etc.; however, there is limited study on TRS. In this present study, we aimed to compare the serum IL-6 levels of TRS and partially responsive schizophrenia (PRS) and explore potential sex differences in the association of TRS and IL-6 levels. Methods The study population consisted of a total of 90 patients with schizophrenia: 64 TRS patients (45.3% males and 54.7% females) and 26 PRS patients (46.2% males and 53.8% females). We measured serum IL-6 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and analyzed them separately by gender, controlling for confounders (age, education, medication, body mass index, and PANSS scores) rigorously. Result The results showed that patients with TRS had higher serum IL-6 levels than patients with PRS (p = 0.002). In females, IL-6 levels increased significantly in the TRS group compared with the PRS group (p = 0.005). And a positive correlation tendency was observed between IL-6 levels and PANSS general sub-scores (r = 0.31, p = 0.039), although this correlation was not significant after correcting for multiple comparisons. Whereas, there were no differences in IL-6 levels between the TRS and PRS (p = 0.124) in males. Conclusion Our findings provided evidence supporting the hypothesis that the inflammatory response system (IRS) may play a role in the pathogenesis of TRS in a sex-dependent manner. In addition, sex differences in the immune dysfunction of individuals with schizophrenia cannot be neglected, and inflammation in male and female TRS should be discussed separately.

Abstract Rapid progress in modern technologies demands zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials with multi-property profiles to withstand harsh service conditions. Thus far, the majority of documented ZTE materials have shortcomings in different aspects that limit their practical utilization. Here, we report on a superior isotropic ZTE alloy with collective properties regarding wide operating temperature windows, high strength-stiffness, and cyclic thermal stability. A boron-migration-mediated solid-state reaction (BMSR) constructs a salient “plum pudding” structure in a dual-phase Er-Fe-B alloy, where the precursor ErFe10 phase reacts with the migrated boron and transforms into the target Er2Fe14B (pudding) and α-Fe phases (plum). The formation of such microstructure helps to eliminate apparent crystallographic texture, tailor and form isotropic ZTE, and simultaneously enhance the strength and toughness of the alloy. These findings suggest a promising design paradigm for comprehensive performance ZTE alloys.

Abstract Epitaxial growth is one of the most commonly used strategies to precisely tailor heterostructures with well-defined compositions, morphologies, crystal phases, and interfaces for various applications. However, as epitaxial growth requires a small interfacial lattice mismatch between the components, it remains a challenge for the epitaxial synthesis of heterostructures constructed by materials with large lattice mismatch and/or different chemical bonding, especially the noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures. Here, we develop a noble metal-seeded epitaxial growth strategy to prepare highly symmetrical noble metal-semiconductor branched heterostructures with desired spatial configurations, i.e., twenty CdS (or CdSe) nanorods epitaxially grown on twenty exposed (111) facets of Ag icosahedral nanocrystal, albeit a large lattice mismatch (more than 40%). Importantly, a high quantum yield (QY) of plasmon-induced hot-electron transferred from Ag to CdS was observed in epitaxial Ag-CdS icosapods (18.1%). This work demonstrates that epitaxial growth can be achieved in heterostructures composed of materials with large lattice mismatches. The constructed epitaxial noble metal-semiconductor interfaces could be an ideal platform for investigating the role of interfaces in various physicochemical processes.

Abstract The recently discovered kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs, Rb, K) exhibit a variety of intriguing phenomena, such as a charge density wave (CDW) with time-reversal symmetry breaking and possible unconventional superconductivity. Here, we report a rare non-monotonic evolution of the CDW temperature (T CDW) with the reduction of flake thickness approaching the atomic limit, and the superconducting transition temperature (T c) features an inverse variation with T CDW. T CDW initially decreases to a minimum value of 72 K at 27 layers and then increases abruptly, reaching a record-high value of 120 K at 5 layers. Raman scattering measurements reveal a weakened electron-phonon coupling with the reduction of sample thickness, suggesting that a crossover from electron-phonon coupling to dominantly electronic interactions could account for the non-monotonic thickness dependence of T CDW. Our work demonstrates the novel effects of dimension reduction and carrier doping on quantum states in thin flakes and provides crucial insights into the complex mechanism of the CDW order in the family of AV3Sb5 kagome metals.

The anionic redox reaction (ARR) is a promising charge contributor to improve the reversible capacity of layered-oxide cathodes for Na-ion batteries; however, some practical bottlenecks still need to be eliminated, including a low capacity retention, large voltage hysteresis, and low rate capability. Herein, we proposed a high-Na content honeycomb-ordered cathode, P2–Na5/6[Li1/6Cu1/6Mn2/3]O2 (P2-NLCMO), with combined cationic/anionic redox. Neutron powder diffraction and X-ray diffraction of P2-NLCMO suggested P2-type stacking with rarely found P6322 symmetry. In addition, advanced spectroscopy techniques and density functional theory calculations confirmed the synergistic stabilizing relationship between the Li/Cu dual honeycomb centers, achieving fully active Cu3+/Cu2+ redox and stabilized ARR with interactively suppressed local distortion. With a meticulously regulated charge/discharge protocol, both the cycling and rate capability of P2-NLCMO were significantly improved, demonstrating reasonable capacity and eliminating voltage hysteresis. Overall, this work contributes a well-defined layered oxide cathode with combined cationic/anionic redox towards rational designing advanced Na-ion batteries.

A new type of grain-interior planar defect in a ceramic phase in TiC doped cemented tungsten carbides was discovered. It is unique in that the monolayers of metal atoms exist stably in ceramic grains. The planar defects were induced by the ordered heteroatoms distributing on certain crystal planes of the matrix, which are distinct from the known planar defects such as phase-, grain-, and twin-boundaries, stacking faults, and complexions. Detailed characterization on the atomic scale was performed for the composition, structure, and crystallography of the planar defects, and their energy state and stability were evaluated by modeling. It was found that the Ti monolayer assists nucleation of the new WC crystal along the normal direction to its basal plane. Due to the disturbance of the heteroatom layer, the deposition of W and C atoms deviates from the regular sites occupied in the perfect crystal lattice, resulting in variations of the W–C arrangement in the grain structure. Experiments confirmed that tailoring the distribution density of the planar defects could give the best comprehensive mechanical performance with simultaneously outstanding strength and fracture toughness in the materials containing the grain-interior planar defects. This study provides a new strategy to greatly enhance the mechanical properties of materials by introducing and tailoring planar defects in the grain interiors.

Abstract Despite of suitable band structures for harvesting solar light and driving water redox reactions, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has suffered from poor charge transfer ability and sluggish surface reaction kinetics, which limit its photocatalytic activity for water splitting. Herein, atomically dispersed Zn-coordinated three-dimensional (3D) sponge-like PCN (Zn-PCN) is synthesized through a novel intermediate coordination strategy. Advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations well evidence that Zn single atoms are coordinated and stabilized on PCN in the form of Zn-N6 configuration featured with an electron-deficient state. Such an electronic configuration has been demonstrated contributive to promoted electron excitation, accelerated charge separation and transfer as well as reduced water redox barriers. Further benefited from the abundant surface active sites derived from the 3D porous structure, Zn-PCN realizes visible-light photocatalysis for overall water splitting with H2 and O2 simultaneously evolved at a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1. This work brings new insights into the design of novel single-atom photocatalysts by deepening the understanding of electronic configurations and reactive sites favorable to excellent photocatalysis for water splitting and related solar energy conversion reactions.

Abstract Background Ligand–protein interactions play a key role in defining protein function, and detecting natural ligands for a given protein is thus a very important bioengineering task. In particular, with the rapid development of AI-based structure prediction algorithms, batch structural models with high reliability and accuracy can be obtained at low cost, giving rise to the urgent requirement for the prediction of natural ligands based on protein structures. In recent years, although several structure-based methods have been developed to predict ligand-binding pockets and ligand-binding sites, accurate and rapid methods are still lacking, especially for the prediction of ligand-binding regions and the spatial extension of ligands in the pockets. Results In this paper, we proposed a multilayer dynamics perturbation analysis (MDPA) method for predicting ligand-binding regions based solely on protein structure, which is an extended version of our previously developed fast dynamic perturbation analysis (FDPA) method. In MDPA/FDPA, ligand binding tends to occur in regions that cause large changes in protein conformational dynamics. MDPA, examined using a standard validation dataset of ligand-protein complexes, yielded an averaged ligand-binding site prediction Matthews coefficient of 0.40, with a prediction precision of at least 50% for 71% of the cases. In particular, for 80% of the cases, the predicted ligand-binding region overlaps the natural ligand by at least 50%. The method was also compared with other state-of-the-art structure-based methods. Conclusions MDPA is a structure-based method to detect ligand-binding regions on protein surface. Our calculations suggested that a range of spaces inside the protein pockets has subtle interactions with the protein, which can significantly impact on the overall dynamics of the protein. This work provides a valuable tool as a starting point upon which further docking and analysis methods can be used for natural ligand detection in protein functional annotation. Abstract Building a bridge between properties and structures has always been the key focus of any materials research. Nowadays, energy storage materials, especially lithium‐ion batteries, are crucial both in daily life and for the research community. Therefore, there is an urgent need to discover the functionality origin of battery performances to improve and design better material systems. Functionality originates from local symmetry and field. Local symmetry can be described by four fundamental degrees of freedom: lattice, charge, orbital, and spin. On the basis of this, detailed descriptions of the battery's properties in terms of lattice, charge, orbital, and spin are presented from the perspective of frontier transmission electron microscopy in this review. Besides, frontier in situ methods are introduced to record the dynamic structural evolution process during the battery cycle. Future discussion from the perspectives of both materials and characterizations is provided at the end of this review.

ObjectiveTo compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and pelvic pain levels over time in patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and those with other pelvic pain conditions (OPPC) including chronic prostatitis, dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia, and vulvar vestibulitis.MethodsWe prospectively enrolled male and female patients from any Veterans Health Administration (VHA) center in the US. They completed the Genitourinary Pain Index (GUPI) quantifying urologic HRQOL and the 12-Item Short Form Survey version 2 (SF-12) quantifying general HRQOL at enrollment and 1 year later. Participants were classified by ICD diagnosis codes and confirmed by chart review to be IC/BPS or OPPC (308 and 85 patients respectively).ResultsAt baseline and follow-up, IC/BPS patients, on average, had worse urologic and general HRQOL than OPPC patients. IC/BPS patients demonstrated improvement in urologic HRQOL measures over the study but demonstrated no significant change in any general HRQOL measure suggesting a condition-specific impact. Patients with OPPC demonstrated similar improvements in urologic HRQOL but had deteriorating mental health and general HRQOL at follow-up suggesting a wider general HRQOL impact for these diseases.ConclusionsWe found that patients with IC/BPS had worse urologic HRQOL compared to other pelvic conditions. Despite this, IC/BPS showed stable general HRQOL over time, suggesting a more condition-specific impact on HRQOL. OPPC patients showed deteriorating general HRQOL, suggesting more widespread pain symptoms in these conditions.

BackgroundCompound lymphoma is an uncommon type of lymphoid malignancy, and those consisting of concurrent B- and T-cell tumors are relatively rare.Case SummaryA 41-year-old man was presented with a 1-month history of progressively worsening cough, chest tightness, and dyspnea after exercise, which could be relieved following rest. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan demonstrated a 7.4 × 4.9 cm2 heterogeneous mass in the anterior mediastinum, where a large area of cystic liquid existed, and multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum. Since the biopsy failed to yield an exact diagnosis and there was no sign of metastasis, the tumor was surgically resectioned. Surgical findings included obscure boundaries and consistent tumor stiffness with pericardial and pleural invasion. Further pathological examination combined with immunophenotype and gene rearrangement test found the mass composite of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) and B-cell lymphoma. The patient recovered well after R0 resection and received chemotherapy with four cycles of CHOP combined with chidamide 2 weeks after surgery. The patient has had a complete response for over 60 months.ConclusionIn conclusion, we reported a composite lymphoma of AITL combined with B-cell lymphomas. Our experience provides the first successful attempt to treat this rare disease with combined surgery and chemotherapy.

Abstract Currently, the most efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water dissociation is Pt‐based catalyst. Unfortunately, the high cost and less than perfect efficiency hinder wide‐range industrial/technological applications. Here, by controlling the treatment temperature of tris (2,2‐bipyridine) ruthenium dichloride hexahydrate, synthesis of compounds with novel ruthenium single/dual atoms (Ru S/DAs) mixed with Ru nanoclusters (Ru S/DAs + Ru NCs) and supported by carbon dots is demonstrated. These compounds are shown to be highly efficient and competitive catalysts for hydrogen evolution. Ru S/DAs + Ru NCs exhibit very high activity, with overpotentials of 15 and 40 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1.0 mol/L KOH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4, respectively. Furthermore, the composites are found to possess outstanding stability and rapid HER kinetics. X ray absorption fine structure analysis, supported by density functional theory calculations, shows charge rearrangement in single‐atomic Ru, and the Ru dual sites promote active hydrogen adsorption and recombination. Ru S/DAs and Ru NCs demonstrate high electroactivity due to the electroactive Ru 4d orbitals. The introduction of Ru NCs activates the carbon support, providing a high electronic conductivity to transfer electrons from Ru NCs to Ru S/DAs, and facilitates water dissociation for the HER process.

Defect engineering of 2 dimensional layered double hydroxide sheets improves their photocatalytic activity. Here, the authors etch sheets in acid and show that the etched sheets generate substantially more reactive oxygen species that untreated sheets and the treated sheets can be used to kill cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract Despite the low cost and high capacity of Ni‐rich layered oxides (NRLOs), their widespread implementation in electric vehicles is hindered by capacity decay and O release. These issues originate from chemo‐mechanical heterogeneity, which is mainly related to oxygen anion redox (OAR). However, what to tune regarding OAR in NRLOs and how to tune it remains unknown. In this study, a close correlation between the OAR chemistry and Li/Ni antisite defects is revealed. Experiments and calculations show the opposite effects of aggregative and dispersive Li/Ni antisite defects on the NiO6 configuration and Ni spin state in NRLOs. The resulting broad or narrow spans for the energy bands caused by spin states lead to different OAR chemistries. By tuning the Li/Ni antisite defects to be dispersive rather than aggregative, the threshold voltage for triggering OAR is obviously elevated, and the generation of bulk‐O2‐like species and O2 release at phase transition nodes is fundamentally restrained. The OAR is regulated from irreversible to reversible, fundamentally addressing structural degradation and heterogeneity. This study reveals the interaction of the Li/Ni antisite defect/OAR chemistry/chemo‐mechanical heterogeneity and presents some insights into the design of high‐performance NRLO cathodes.

The social contact rate has influenced the transmission of COVID-19, with more social contact resulting in more contagion cases. We chose 18 countries with the most confirmed cases in the first 200 days after the Wuhan lockdown. This was the first study using the dynamic social contact rate to simulate the epidemic under diverse restriction policies over 500 days since the COVID-19 outbreak. The developed General Dynamic Model suggested that the probability of contagion ranged from 12.52% to 39.39% in the epidemic. The geometric mean of the social contact rates differed from 18.21% to 96.00% between countries. The restriction policies in developed economies were 3.5 times more efficient than in developing economies. We compare the effectiveness of different policies for disease prevention and discuss the influence of policy adjustment frequency for each country. Maintaining the tightest restriction or alternate tightening and loosening restrictions was recommended, with each having an average 72.45% and 79.78% reduction in maximum active cases, respectively.

The oxygen octahedral rotation (OOR) forms fundamental atomic distortions and symmetries in perovskite oxides and definitely determines their properties and functionalities. Therefore, epitaxial strain and interfacial structural coupling engineering have been developed to modulate the OOR patterns and explore novel properties, but it is difficult to distinguish the 2 mechanisms. Here, different symmetries are induced in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) epitaxial films by interfacial oxygen octahedral coupling rather than epitaxial strain. The NBT film grown on the Nb:SrTiO3 substrate exhibits a paraelectric tetragonal phase, while with La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 as a buffer layer, a monoclinic phase and robust ferroelectricity are obtained, with a remanent polarization of 42 μC cm−2 and a breakdown strength of 7.89 MV cm−1, which are the highest record among NBT-based films. Moreover, the interfacial oxygen octahedral coupling effect is demonstrated to propagate to the entire thickness of the film, suggesting an intriguing long-range effect. This work provides a deep insight into understanding the structure modulation in perovskite heterostructures and an important avenue for achieving unique functionalities.
