Metasurfaces -- ultrathin structures composed of subwavelength optical elements -- have revolutionized light manipulation by enabling precise control over electromagnetic waves' amplitude, phase, polarization, and spectral properties. Concurrently, computational imaging leverages algorithms to reconstruct images from optically processed signals, overcoming limitations of traditional imaging systems. This review explores the synergistic integration of metaoptics and computational imaging, "computational metaoptics," which combines the physical wavefront shaping ability of metasurfaces with advanced computational algorithms to enhance imaging performance beyond conventional limits. We discuss how computational metaoptics addresses the inherent limitations of single-layer metasurfaces in achieving multifunctionality without compromising efficiency. By treating metasurfaces as physical preconditioners and co-designing them with reconstruction algorithms through end-to-end (inverse) design, it is possible to jointly optimize the optical hardware and computational software. This holistic approach allows for the automatic discovery of optimal metasurface designs and reconstruction methods that significantly improve imaging capabilities. Advanced applications enabled by computational metaoptics are highlighted, including phase imaging and quantum state measurement, which benefit from the metasurfaces' ability to manipulate complex light fields and the computational algorithms' capacity to reconstruct high-dimensional information. We also examine performance evaluation challenges, emphasizing the need for new metrics that account for the combined optical and computational nature of these systems. Finally, we identify new frontiers in computational metaoptics which point toward a future where computational metaoptics may play a central role in advancing imaging science and technology.

We present a theoretical framework for temperature imaging from long-wavelength infrared thermal radiation (e.g. 8-12 $\mu$m) through the end-to-end design of a metasurface-optics frontend and a computational-reconstruction backend. We introduce a new nonlinear reconstruction algorithm, ``Planck regression," that reconstructs the temperature map from a grayscale sensor image, even in the presence of severe chromatic aberration, by exploiting blackbody and optical physics particular to thermal imaging. We combine this algorithm with an end-to-end approach that optimizes a manufacturable, single-layer metasurface to yield the most accurate reconstruction. Our designs demonstrate high-quality, noise-robust reconstructions of arbitrary temperature maps (including completely random images) in simulations of an ultra-compact thermal-imaging device. We also show that Planck regression is much more generalizable to arbitrary images than a straightforward neural-network reconstruction, which requires a large training set of domain-specific images., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Metasurfaces are sub-wavelength patterned layers for controlling waves in physical systems. In optics, meta-surfaces are created by materials with different dielectric constants and are capable of unconventional functionalities. We develop a deep-learning framework for Dirac-material metasurface design for controlling electronic waves. The metasurface is a configuration of circular graphene quantum dots, each created by an electric potential. Employing deep convolutional neural networks, we show that the original scattering wave can be reconstructed with fidelity over 95$\%$, suggesting the feasibility of Dirac electron holography. Additional applications such as plane wave generation, designing broadband, and multi-functionality graphene metasurface systems are illustrated., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

We propose an on-chip all-optical gyroscope based on nonlinear multi-resonant cavity quantum photonics in thin film $\chi^{(2)}$ resonators -- Quantum-Optic Nonlinear Gyro or QONG in short. The key feature of our gyroscope is co-arisal and co-accumulation of quantum correlations, nonlinear wave mixing and non-inertial signals, all inside the same sensor-resonator. We theoretically analyze the Fisher Information of our QONGs under fundamental quantum noise conditions. Using Bayesian optimization, we maximize the Fisher Information and show that $\sim 900\times$ improvement is possible over the shot-noise limited linear gyroscope with the same footprint, intrinsic quality factors and power budget., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, journal artical

Traditional optical elements and conventional metasurfaces obey shift-invariance in the paraxial regime. For imaging systems obeying paraxial shift-invariance, a small shift in input angle causes a corresponding shift in the sensor image. Shift-invariance has deep implications for the design and functionality of optical devices, such as the necessity of free space between components (as in compound objectives made of several curved surfaces). We present a method for nanophotonic inverse design of compact imaging systems whose resolution is not constrained by paraxial shift-invariance. Our method is end-to-end, in that it integrates density-based full-Maxwell topology optimization with a fully iterative elastic-net reconstruction algorithm. By the design of nanophotonic structures that scatter light in a non-shift-invariant manner, our optimized nanophotonic imaging system overcomes the limitations of paraxial shift-invariance, achieving accurate, noise-robust image reconstruction beyond shift-invariant resolution.

Lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) is an emerging photonic platform that exhibits favorable material properties (such as low optical loss, strong nonlinearities, and stability) and enables large-scale integration with stronger optical confinement, showing promise for future optical networks, quantum processors, and nonlinear optical systems. However, while photonics engineering has entered the era of automated "inverse design" via optimization in recent years, the design of LNOI integrated photonic devices still mostly relies on intuitive models and inefficient parameter sweeps, limiting the accessible parameter space, performance, and functionality. Here, we develop and implement a 3D gradient-based inverse-design model tailored for topology optimization of the LNOI platform, which not only could efficiently search a large parameter space but also takes into account practical fabrication constraints, including minimum feature sizes and etched sidewall angles. We experimentally demonstrate a spatial-mode multiplexer, a waveguide crossing, and a compact waveguide bend, all with low insertion losses, tiny footprints, and excellent agreement between simulation and experimental results. The devices, together with the design methodology, represent a crucial step towards the variety of advanced device functionalities needed in future LNOI photonics, and could provide compact and cost-effective solutions for future optical links, quantum technologies and nonlinear optics.

Meta-optics have rapidly become a major research field within the optics and photonics community, strongly driven by the seemingly limitless opportunities made possible by controlling optical wavefronts through interaction with arrays of sub-wavelength scatterers. As more and more modalities are explored, the design strategies to achieve desired functionalities become increasingly demanding, necessitating more advanced design techniques. Herein, the inverse-design approach is utilized to create a set of single-layer meta-optics that simultaneously focus light and shape the spectra of focused light without using any filters. Thus, both spatial and spectral properties of the meta-optics are optimized, resulting in spectra that mimic the color matching functions of the CIE 1931 XYZ color space, which links the distributions of wavelengths in light and the color perception of a human eye. Experimental demonstrations of these meta-optics show qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions and help elucidate the focusing mechanism of these devices.

We present a framework for the end-to-end optimization of metasurface imaging systems that reconstruct targets using compressed sensing, a technique for solving underdetermined imaging problems when the target object exhibits sparsity (i.e. the object can be described by a small number of non-zero values, but the positions of these values are unknown). We nest an iterative, unapproximated compressed sensing reconstruction algorithm into our end-to-end optimization pipeline, resulting in an interpretable, data-efficient method for maximally leveraging metaoptics to exploit object sparsity. We apply our framework to super-resolution imaging and high-resolution depth imaging with a phase-change material. In both situations, our end-to-end framework computationally discovers optimal metasurface structures for compressed sensing recovery, automatically balancing a number of complicated design considerations to select an imaging measurement matrix from a complex, physically constrained manifold with millions ofdimensions. The optimized metasurface imaging systems are robust to noise, significantly improving over random scattering surfaces and approaching the ideal compressed sensing performance of a Gaussian matrix, showing how a physical metasurface system can demonstrably approach the mathematical limits of compressed sensing.

Tunable and multi-functional nanophotonic devices are used for applications from beam steering to sensing. Yet little is understood about fundamental limits to their functionality. The difficulty lies with the fact that it is a single structure that must exhibit optimal response over multiple scenarios. In this article, we present a general theoretical framework for understanding and computing fundamental limits to multi-functional nanophotonic response. Building from rapid recent advances in bounds to light-matter interactions, we show that after rewriting the design problems in terms of polarization fields, the introduction of suitable cross-correlation constraints imposes the crucial "single-structure" criteria. We demonstrate the utility of this approach for two applications: reflectivity contrast for optical sensing, and maximum efficiency for optical beam switching. Our approach generalizes to any active or multi-functional design in linear optics.

We introduce end-to-end metaoptics inverse design for multi-channel imaging: reconstruction of depth, spectral and polarization channels from a single-shot monochrome image. The proposed technique integrates a single-layer metasurface frontend with an efficient Tikhonov reconstruction backend, without any additional optics except a grayscale sensor. Our method yields multi-channel imaging by spontaneous demultiplexing: the metaoptics front-end separates different channels into distinct spatial domains whose locations on the sensor are optimally discovered by the inverse-design algorithm. We present large-area metasurface designs, compatible with standard lithography, for multi-spectral imaging, depth-spectral imaging, and ``all-in-one'' spectro-polarimetric-depth imaging with robust reconstruction performance ($\lesssim 10\%$ error with 1\% detector noise). In contrast to neural networks, our framework is physically interpretable and does not require large training sets. It can be used to reconstruct arbitrary three-dimensional scenes with full multi-wavelength spectra and polarization textures.

Bombardment of materials by high-energy particles (e.g., electrons, nuclei, X- and $\gamma$-ray photons) often leads to light emission, known generally as scintillation. Scintillation is ubiquitous and enjoys widespread applications in many areas such as medical imaging, X-ray non-destructive inspection, night vision, electron microscopy, and high-energy particle detectors. A large body of research focuses on finding new materials optimized for brighter, faster, and more controlled scintillation. Here, we develop a fundamentally different approach based on integrating nanophotonic structures into scintillators to enhance their emission. To start, we develop a unified and ab initio theory of nanophotonic scintillators that accounts for the key aspects of scintillation: the energy loss by high-energy particles, as well as the light emission by non-equilibrium electrons in arbitrary nanostructured optical systems. This theoretical framework allows us, for the first time, to experimentally demonstrate nearly an order-of-magnitude enhancement of scintillation, in both electron-induced, and X-ray-induced scintillation. Our theory also allows the discovery of structures that could eventually achieve several orders-of-magnitude scintillation enhancement. The framework and results shown here should enable the development of a new class of brighter, faster, and higher-resolution scintillators with tailored and optimized performances - with many potential applications where scintillators are used.

Optical metasurfaces have been heralded as the platform to integrate multiple functionalities in a compact form-factor, potentially replacing bulky components. A central stepping stone towards realizing this promise is the demonstration of multifunctionality under several constraints (e.g. at multiple incident wavelengths and/or angles) in a single device -- an achievement being hampered by design limitations inherent to single-layer planar geometries. Here, we propose a general framework for the inverse design of volumetric 3D metaoptics via topology optimization, showing that even few-wavelength thick devices can achieve high-efficiency multifunctionality. We embody our framework in multiple closely-spaced patterned layers of a low-index polymer. We experimentally demonstrate our approach with an inverse-designed 3d-printed light concentrator working at five different non-paraxial angles of incidence. We report an inverse-designed, high numerical aperture (~0.44), extended depth of focus (EDOF) meta-optic, which exhibit a lens-like point spread function (PSF). The EDOF meta-optic maintains a focusing efficiency comparable to that of a hyperboloid metalens throughout its depth of focus. Exploiting the extended depth of focus and computational post-processing, we demonstrate broadband imaging across the full visible spectrum using a 1 mm, f/1 meta-optic. Unlike other canonical EDOF meta-optics, characterized by phase masks such as a log-asphere or cubic function, our design exhibits a highly invariant PSF across ~290nm optical bandwidth, which leads to significantly improved image quality, as quantified by structural similarity metrics.

We present full-Maxwell topology-optimization design of a single-piece multlayer metalens, about 10 wavelengths~$\lambda$ in thickness, that simultaneously focuses over a $60^\circ$ angular range and a 23\% spectral bandwidth without suffering chromatic or angular aberration, a "plan-achromat." At all angles and frequencies it achieves diffraction-limited focusing (Strehl ratio $> 0.8$) and absolute focusing efficiency $> 50$\%. Both 2D and 3D axi-symmetric designs are presented, optimized over $\sim 10^5$ degrees of freedom. We also demonstrate shortening the lens-to-sensor distance while producing the same image as for a longer "virtual" focal length and maintaining plan-achromaticity. These proof-of-concept designs demonstrate the ultra-compact multi-functionality that can be achieved by exploiting the full wave physics of subwavelength designs, and motivate future work on design and fabrication of multi-layer meta-optics.

We demonstrate new axisymmetric inverse-design techniques that can solve problems radically different from traditional lenses, including \emph{reconfigurable} lenses (that shift a multi-frequency focal spot in response to refractive-index changes) and {\emph{widely separated}} multi-wavelength lenses ($\lambda = 1\,\mu$m and $10\,\mu$m). We also present experimental validation for an axisymmetric inverse-designed monochrome lens in the near-infrared fabricated via two-photon polymerization. Axisymmetry allows fullwave Maxwell solvers to be scaled up to structures hundreds or even thousands of wavelengths in diameter before requiring domain-decomposition approximations, while multilayer topology optimization with $\sim 10^5$ degrees of freedom can tackle challenging design problems even when restricted to axisymmetric structures., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

By co-designing a meta-optical front end in conjunction with an image-processing back end, we demonstrate noise sensitivity and compactness substantially superior to either an optics-only or a computation-only approach, illustrated by two examples: subwavelength imaging and reconstruction of the full polarization coherence matrices of multiple light sources. Our end-to-end inverse designs couple the solution of the full Maxwell equations---exploiting all aspects of wave physics arising in subwavelength scatterers---with inverse-scattering algorithms in a single large-scale optimization involving $\gtrsim 10^4$ degrees of freedom. The resulting structures scatter light in a way that is radically different from either a conventional lens or a random microstructure, and suppress the noise sensitivity of the inverse-scattering computation by several orders of magnitude. Extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses are important for various applications in computational imaging and microscopy. In addition to enabling novel functionalities, EDOF lenses can alleviate the need for stringent alignment requirements for imaging systems. Existing EDOF lenses, however, are often inefficient or produce an asymmetric point spread function (PSF) that blurs images. Inverse design of nanophotonics, including metasurfaces, has generated strong interest in recent years owing to its potential for generating exotic and innovative optical elements, which are generally difficult to model intuitively. Using adjoint optimization-based inverse electromagnetic design, in this paper, we designed a cylindrical metasurface lens operating at ~ 625nm with a depth of focus exceeding that of an ordinary lens. We validated our design by nanofabrication and optical characterization of silicon nitride metasurface lenses (with lateral dimension of 66.66 {\mu}m) with three different focal lengths (66.66 {\mu}m,100 {\mu}m,133.33 {\mu}m). We introduce an overlapping-domain approach to large-area metasurface design, in which each simulated domain consists of a unit cell and overlapping regions from the neighboring cells plus PML absorbers. We show that our approach generates greatly improved metalens quality compared to designs produced using a locally periodic approximation, thanks to $\sim 10\times$ better accuracy with similar computational cost. We use the new approach with topology optimization to design large-area ($200\lambda$) high-NA (0.71) multichrome and broadband achromatic lenses with high focusing efficiency ($\sim 50\%$), greatly improving upon previously reported works.

We demonstrate optimization of optical metasurfaces over $10^5$--$10^6$ degrees of freedom in two and three dimensions, 100--1000+ wavelengths ($\lambda$) in diameter, with 100+ parameters per $\lambda^2$. In particular, we show how topology optimization, with one degree of freedom per high-resolution "pixel," can be extended to large areas with the help of a locally periodic approximation that was previously only used for a few parameters per $\lambda^2$. In this way, we can computationally discover completely unexpected metasurface designs for challenging multi-frequency, multi-angle problems, including designs for fully coupled multi-layer structures with arbitrary per-layer patterns. Unlike typical metasurface designs based on subwavelength unit cells, our approach can discover both sub- and supra-wavelength patterns and can obtain both the near and far fields.

Second harmonic conversion from 1550~nm to 775~nm with an efficiency of 400% W$^{-1}$ is demonstrated in a gallium phosphide (GaP) on oxide integrated photonic platform. The platform consists of doubly-resonant, phase-matched ring resonators with quality factors $Q \sim 10^4$, low mode volumes $V \sim 30 (\lambda/n)^3$, and high nonlinear mode overlaps. Measurements and simulations indicate that conversion efficiencies can be increased by a factor of 20 by improving the waveguide-cavity coupling to achieve critical coupling in current devices., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We present a computational framework for efficient optimization-based "inverse design" of large-area "metasurfaces" (subwavelength-patterned surfaces) for applications such as multi-wavelength and multi-angle optimizations, and demultiplexers. To optimize surfaces that can be thousands of wavelengths in diameter, with thousands (or millions) of parameters, the key is a fast approximate solver for the scattered field. We employ a "locally periodic" approximation in which the scattering problem is approximated by a composition of periodic scattering problems from each unit cell of the surface, and validate it against brute-force Maxwell solutions. This is an extension of ideas in previous metasurface designs, but with greatly increased flexibility, e.g. to automatically balance tradeoffs between multiple frequencies, or to optimize a photonic device given only partial information about the desired field. Our approach even extends beyond the metasurface regime to non-subwavelength structures where additional diffracted orders must be included (but the period is not large enough to apply scalar diffraction theory)., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities plays a key role in silicon photonics. However, despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are few systematic design tools to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. Here, we propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to produce wavelength-scale waveguide--cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We numerically demonstrate couplers discovered by this method that can achieve critical, or nearly critical, coupling between multi-ring cavities and a single waveguide at up to six widely separated wavelengths spanning the $560$--$1500$~nm range of interest for on-chip nonlinear optical devices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The super-Planckian features of radiative heat transfer in the near-field are known to depend strongly on both material and geometric design properties. However, the relative importance and interplay of these two facets, and the degree to which they can be used to ultimately control energy flow, remains an open question. Recently derived bounds suggest that enhancements as large as $|\chi|^4 \lambda^{2} / \left(\left(4\pi\right)^{2} \Im\left[\chi\right]^{2} d^{2}\right)$ are possible between extended structures (compared to blackbody); but neither geometries reaching this bound, nor designs revealing the predicted material ($\chi$) scaling, have been previously reported. Here, exploiting inverse techniques, in combination with fast computational approaches enabled by the low-rank properties of elliptic operators for disjoint bodies, we investigate this relation between material and geometry on an enlarged space structures. Crucially, we find that the material proportionality given above does indeed emerge in realistic structures. In reaching this result, we also show that (in two dimensions) lossy metals such as tungsten, typically considered to be poor candidate materials for strongly enhancing heat transfer in the near infrared, can be structured to selectively realize flux rates that come within $50\%$ of those exhibited by an ideal pair of resonant lossless metals for separations as small as $2\%$ of a tunable design wavelength., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Recent advancements in computational inverse design have begun to reshape the landscape of structures and techniques available to nanophotonics. Here, we outline a cross section of key developments at the intersection of these two fields: moving from a recap of foundational results to motivation of emerging applications in nonlinear, topological, near-field and on-chip optics., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Typically, photonic waveguides designed for nonlinear frequency conversion rely on intuitive and established principles, including index guiding and band gap engineering, and are based on simple shapes with high degrees of symmetry. We show that recently developed inverse-design techniques can be applied to discover new kinds of microstructured fibers and metasurfaces designed to achieve large nonlinear frequency conversion efficiencies. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate complex, wavelengthscale chalcogenide glass fibers and gallium phosphide metasurfaces exhibiting some of the largest nonlinear conversion efficiencies predicted thus far. Such enhancements arise because, in addition to enabling a great degree of tunability in the choice of design wavelengths, these optimization tools ensure both frequency- and phase-matching in addition to large nonlinear overlap factors, potentially orders of magnitude larger than those obtained in hand-designed structures.

We propose a general topology optimization framework for metasurface inverse design that can automatically discover highly complex multi-layered meta-structures with increased functionalities. In particular, we present topology-optimized multi-layered geometries exhibiting angular phase control, including a single-piece nanophotonic metalens with angular aberration correction as well as an angle-convergent metalens that focuses light onto the same focal spot regardless of the angle of incidence.

We derive analytical formulas quantifying radiative emission from subwavelength emitters embedded in triply resonant nonlinear $\chi^{(2)}$ cavities supporting exceptional points (EP) made of dark and leaky modes. We show that the up-converted radiation rate in such a system can be greatly enhanced---by up to two orders of magnitude---compared to typical Purcell factors achievable in non-degenerate cavities, for both monochromatic and broadband emitters. We provide a proof-of-concept demonstration by studying an inverse-designed 2D photonic-crystal slab that supports an EP formed out of a Dirac cone at the emission frequency and a phase-matched, leaky-mode resonance at the second harmonic frequency.

We apply a large-scale computational technique, known as topology optimization, to the inverse design of photonic Dirac cones. In particular, we report on a variety of photonic crystal geometries, realizable in simple isotropic dielectric materials, which exhibit dual-polarization and dual-wavelength Dirac cones. We demonstrate the flexibility of this technique by designing photonic crystals of different symmetry types, such as ones with four-fold and six-fold rotational symmetry, which possess Dirac cones at different points within the Brillouin zone. The demonstrated and related optimization techniques could open new avenues to band-structure engineering and manipulating the propagation of light in periodic media, with possible applications in exotic optical phenomena such as effective zero-index media and topological photonics.

We exploit recently developed topology-optimization techniques to design complex, wavelength-scale resonators for enhancing various nonlinear $\chi^{(2)}$ and $\chi^{(3)}$ frequency conversion processes. In particular, we demonstrate aperiodic, multi-track ring resonators and 2D slab microcavities exhibiting long lifetimes $Q \gtrsim 10^4$, small modal volumes $V \gtrsim (\lambda/2n)^3$, and among the largest nonlinear overlaps (a generalization of phase matching in large-etalon waveguides) possible, paving the way for efficient, compact, and wide-bandwdith integrated nonlinear devices.

We propose a novel inverse-design method that enables brute-force discovery of photonic crystal (PhC) structures with complex spectral degeneracies. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate PhCs exhibiting third-order Dirac points formed by the \emph{accidental} degeneracy of modes of monopolar, dipolar, and quadrupolar nature. We show that under suitable conditions, these modes can coalesce and form a third-order exceptional point (EP3), leading to diverging Petermann factors. We show that the spontaneous emission (SE) rate of emitters at such EP3s, related to the local density of states, can be enhanced by a factor of 8 in purely lossy (passive) structures, with larger enhancements $\sim \sqrt{n^3}$ possible at exceptional points of higher order $n$ or in materials with gain.

We describe an approach based on topology optimization that enables automatic discovery of wavelength-scale photonic structures for achieving high-efficiency second-harmonic generation (SHG). A key distinction from previous formulation and designs that seek to maximize Purcell factors at individual frequencies is that our method not only aims to achieve frequency matching (across an entire octave) and large radiative lifetimes, but also optimizes the equally important nonlinear--coupling figure of merit $\bar{\beta}$, involving a complicated spatial overlap-integral between modes. We apply this method to the particular problem of optimizing micropost and grating-slab cavities (one-dimensional multilayered structures) and demonstrate that a variety of material platforms can support modes with the requisite frequencies, large lifetimes $Q > 10^4$, small modal volumes $\sim (\lambda/n)^3$, and extremely large $\bar{\beta} \gtrsim 10^{-2}$, leading to orders of magnitude enhancements in SHG efficiency compared to state of the art photonic designs. Such giant $\bar{\beta}$ alleviate the need for ultra-narrow linewidths and thus pave the way for wavelength-scale SHG devices with faster operating timescales and higher tolerance to fabrication imperfections.

We propose monolithic diamond cavities that can be used to convert color-center Fock-state single photons from emission wavelengths to telecommunication bands. We present a detailed theoretical description of the conversion process, analyzing important practical concerns such as nonlinear phase shifts and frequency mismatch. Our analysis predicts sustainable power requirements ($ \lesssim 1~\mathrm{W}$) for a chipscale nonlinear device with high conversion efficiencies.

We study thermal radiation from nonlinear ($\chi^{(3)}$) photonic cavities coupled to external channels and subject to incident monochromatic light. Our work extends related work on nonlinear mechanical oscillators [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 110602 (2006)] to the problem of thermal radiation, demonstrating that bistability can enhance thermal radiation by orders of magnitude and result in strong lineshape alternations, including "super-narrow spectral peaks" occurring at the onset of kinetic phase transitions. We show that when the cavities are designed so as to have perfect linear absorptivity (rate matching), such thermally activated transitions can be exploited to dramatically tune the output power and radiative properties of the cavity, leading to a kind of Kerr-mediated thermo-optic effect. Finally, we demonstrate that in certain parameter regimes, the output radiation exhibits Stokes and anti-Stokes side peaks whose relative magnitudes can be altered by tuning the internal temperature of the cavity relative to its surroundings, a consequence of strong correlations and interference between the emitted and reflected radiation.

Lithium Niobate (LN) is an important nonlinear optical material. Here we demonstrate LN microdisk resonators that feature optical quality factor ~ 100,000, realized using robust and scalable fabrication techniques, that operate over a wide wavelength range spanning visible and near infrared. Using our resonators, and leveraging LN's large second order optical nonlinearity, we demonstrate on-chip second harmonic generation with a conversion efficiency of 0.109 W-1.

We demonstrate high-efficiency, degenerate four-wave mixing in triply resonant Kerr $\chi^(3)$ photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities. Using a combination of temporal coupled mode theory and nonlinear finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, we study the nonlinear dynamics of resonant four-wave mixing processes and demonstrate the possibility of observing high-efficiency limit cycles and steady-state conversion corresponding to $\approx 100$% depletion of the pump light at low powers, even including effects due to losses, self- and cross-phase modulation, and imperfect frequency matching. Assuming operation in the telecom range, we predict close to perfect quantum efficiencies at reasonably low $\sim$ 50 mW input powers in silicon micrometer-scale cavities.

We investigate experimentally parity-time (${\cal PT}$) symmetric scattering using $LRC$ circuits in an inductively coupled ${\cal PT}$- symmetric pair connected to transmission line leads. In the single-lead case, the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric circuit acts as a simple dual device - an amplifier or an absorber depending on the orientation of the lead. When a second lead is attached, the system exhibits unidirectional transparency for some characteristic frequencies. The scattering properties of randomly layered optical media with ${\cal PT}$-symmetric index of refraction are studied using the transfer-matrix method. We find that the transmitance decays exponentially as a function of the system size, with an enhanced rate $\xi_{\gamma}(W)^{-1}=\xi_0(W)^{-1}+\xi_{\gamma} (0)^{-1}$, where $\xi_0(W)$ is the localization length of the equivalent passive random medium and $\xi_{\gamma}(0)$ is the attenuation/amplification length of the corresponding perfect system with a ${\cal PT}$-symmetric refraction index profile. While transmitance processes are reciprocal to left and right incident waves, the reflectance is enhanced from one side and is inversely suppressed from the other, thus allowing such ${\cal PT}$-symmetric random media to act as unidirectional coherent absorbers.

We show that parity-time (PT) symmetric Bragg periodic structures, near the spontaneous PT - symmetry breaking point, can act as unidirectional invisible media. In this regime, the re flection from one end is diminished while it is enhanced from the other. At the same time the transmission coefficient and phase, are indistinguishable from those expected in the absence of a grating. The phenomenon is robust even in the presence of Kerr non-linearities, and it can also effectively suppress optical bistabilities., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
