A volume-preserving parameterization is a bijective mapping that maps a 3-manifold onto a specified canonical domain that preserves the local volume. This paper formulates the computation of ball-shaped volume-preserving parameterizations as an isovolumetric energy minimization (IEM) problem with the boundary points constrained on a unit sphere. In addition, we develop a new preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm for solving the IEM problem with guaranteed theoretical convergence and significantly improved accuracy and computational efficiency compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms. In this paper, we develop an $n$ dimensional volumetric stretch energy ($n$-VSE) functional for the volume-/mass-preserving parameterization of the $n$-manifolds topologically equivalent to $n$-ball. The $n$-VSE has a lower bound and equal to it if and only if the map is volume-/mass-preserving. This motivates us to minimize the $n$-VSE to achieve the ideal volume-/mass-preserving parameterization. In the discrete case, we also guarantee the relation between the lower bound and the volume-/mass-preservation, and propose the spherical and ball volume-/mass-preserving parameterization algorithms. The numerical experiments indicate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed algorithms. The modified algorithms are applied to the manifold registration and deformation, showing the versatility of $n$-VSE.

We are concerned with efficient numerical methods for stochastic continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations (SCARE). Such equations frequently arise from the state-dependent Riccati equation approach which is perhaps the only systematic way today to study nonlinear control problems. Often involved Riccati-type equations are of small scale, but have to be solved repeatedly in real time. Important applications include the 3D missile/target engagement, the F16 aircraft flight control, and the quadrotor optimal control, to name a few. A new inner-outer iterative method that combines the fixed-point strategy and the structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) is proposed. It is proved that the method is monotonically convergent, and in particular, taking the zero matrix as initial, the method converges to the desired stabilizing solution. Previously, Newton's method has been called to solve SCARE, but it was mostly investigated from its theoretic aspect than numerical aspect in terms of robust and efficient numerical implementation. For that reason, we revisit Newton's method for SCARE, focusing on how to calculate each Newton iterative step efficiently so that Newton's method for SCARE can become practical. It is proposed to use our new inner-outer iterative method, which is provably convergent, to provide critical initial starting points for Newton's method to ensure its convergence. Finally several numerical experiments are conducted to validate the new method and robust implementation of Newton's method.

In this paper we mainly propose efficient and reliable numerical algorithms for solving stochastic continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations (SCARE) typically arising from the differential statedependent Riccati equation technique from the 3D missile/target engagement, the F16 aircraft flight control and the quadrotor optimal control etc. To this end, we develop a fixed point (FP)-type iteration with solving a CARE by the structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) at each iterative step, called FP-CARE SDA. We prove that either the FP-CARE SDA is monotonically nondecreasing or nonincreasing, and is R-linearly convergent, with the zero initial matrix or a special initial matrix satisfying some assumptions. The FP-CARE SDA (FPC) algorithm can be regarded as a robust initial step to produce a good initial matrix, and then the modified Newton (mNT) method can be used by solving the corresponding Lyapunov equation with SDA (FPC-mNT-Lyap SDA). Numerical experiments show that the FPC-mNT-Lyap SDA algorithm outperforms the other existing algorithms.

The volumetric stretch energy has been widely applied to the computation of volume-/mass-preserving parameterizations of simply connected tetrahedral mesh models. However, this approach still lacks theoretical support. In this paper, we provide the theoretical foundation for volumetric stretch energy minimization (VSEM) to compute volume-/mass-preserving parameterizations. In addition, we develop an associated efficient VSEM algorithm with guaranteed asymptotic R-linear convergence. Furthermore, based on the VSEM algorithm, we propose a projected gradient method for the computation of the volume/mass-preserving optimal mass transport map with a guaranteed convergence rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/m)$, and combined with Nesterov-based acceleration, the guaranteed convergence rate becomes $\mathcal{O}(1/m^2)$. Numerical experiments are presented to justify the theoretical convergence behavior for various examples drawn from known benchmark models. In this paper, we first extend the finite distortion problem from the bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ to the closed genus-zero surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by the stereographic projection. Then we derive a theoretical foundation for spherical equiareal parameterizations between a simply connected closed surface $\mathcal{M}$ and a unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ via minimizing the total area distortion energy on $\overline{\mathbb{C}}$. Provided we determine the minimizer of the total area distortion energy, the minimizer composed with the initial conformal map determines the equiareal map between the extended planes. Taking the inverse stereographic projection, we can derive the equiareal map between $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathbb{S}^2$. The total area distortion energy can be rewritten into the sum of Dirichlet energies associated with the southern and northern hemispheres, respectively, and can be decreased by alternatingly solving the corresponding Laplacian equations. Based on this foundational theory, we develop a modified stretch energy minimization for the computation of the spherical equiareal parameterization between $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathbb{S}^2$. In addition, under some mild conditions, we verify that our proposed algorithm has asymptotically R-linear convergence or forms a quasi-periodic solution. Numerical experiments on various benchmarks validate the assumptions for convergence always hold and indicate the efficiency, reliability and robustness of the developed modified stretch energy minimization.

We propose a new modification of Newton iteration for finding some nonnegative Z-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor. The method has local quadratic convergence to a nonnegative eigenpair of a nonnegative tensor, under the usual assumption guaranteeing the local quadratic convergence of the original Newton iteration.

In this paper, we first derive a theoretical basis for spherical conformal parameterizations between a simply connected closed surface $\mathcal{S}$ and a unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ by minimizing the Dirichlet energy on $\overline{\mathbb{C}}$ by stereographic projection. The Dirichlet energy can be rewritten as the sum of the energies associated with the southern and northern hemispheres and can be decreased under an equivalence relation by alternatingly solving the corresponding Laplacian equations. Based on this theoretical foundation, we develop a modified Dirichlet energy minimization with nonequivalence deflation for the computation of the spherical conformal parameterization between $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathbb{S}^2$. In addition, under some mild conditions, we verify the asymptotically R-linear convergence of the proposed algorithm. This paper focuses on studying the bifurcation analysis of the eigenstructure of the $\gamma$-parameterized generalized eigenvalue problem ($\gamma$-GEP) arising in three-dimensional (3D) source-free Maxwell's equations with Pasteur media, where $\gamma$ is the magnetoelectric chirality parameter. For the weakly coupled case, namely, $\gamma < \gamma_{*} \equiv$ critical value, the $\gamma$-GEP is positive definite, which has been well-studied by Chern et.\ al, 2015. For the strongly coupled case, namely, $\gamma > \gamma_{*}$, the $\gamma$-GEP is no longer positive definite, introducing a totally different and complicated structure. For the critical strongly coupled case, numerical computations for electromagnetic fields have been presented by Huang et.\ al, 2018. In this paper, we build several theoretical results on the eigenstructure behavior of the $\gamma$-GEPs. We prove that the $\gamma$-GEP is regular for any $\gamma > 0$, and the $\gamma$-GEP has $2 \times 2$ Jordan blocks of infinite eigenvalues at the critical value $\gamma_{*}$. Then, we show that the $2 \times 2$ Jordan block will split into a complex conjugate eigenvalue pair that rapidly goes down and up and then collides at some real point near the origin. Next, it will bifurcate into two real eigenvalues, with one moving toward the left and the other to the right along the real axis as $\gamma$ increases. A newly formed state whose energy is smaller than the ground state can be created as $\gamma$ is larger than the critical value. This stunning feature of the physical phenomenon would be very helpful in practical applications. In \emph{Guo et al, arXiv:2005.08288}, we propose a decoupled form of the structure-preserving doubling algorithm (dSDA). The method decouples the original two to four coupled recursions, enabling it to solve large-scale algebraic Riccati equations and other related problems. In this paper, we consider the numerical computations of the novel dSDA for solving large-scale continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations with low-rank structures (thus possessing numerically low-rank solutions). With the help of a new truncation strategy, the rank of the approximate solution is controlled. Consequently, large-scale problems can be treated efficiently. The structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) is a fairly efficient method for solving problems closely related to Hamiltonian (or Hamiltonian-like) matrices, such as computing the required solutions to algebraic Riccati equations. However, for large-scale problems in $\mathbb{C}^n$ (also $\mathbb{R}^n$), the SDA with an $O(n^3)$ computational complexity does not work well. In this paper, we propose a new decoupled form of the SDA (we name it as dSDA), building on the associated Krylov subspaces thus leading to the inherent low-rank structures. Importantly, the approach decouples the original two to four iteration formulae. The resulting dSDA is much more efficient since only one quantity (instead of the original two to four) is computed iteratively. For large-scale problems, further efficiency is gained from the low-rank structures. This paper presents the theoretical aspects of the dSDA. A practical algorithm dSDA t with truncation and many illustrative numerical results will appear in a second paper.

Calculation of band structure of three dimensional photonic crystals amounts to solving large-scale Maxwell eigenvalue problems, which are notoriously challenging due to high multiplicity of zero eigenvalue. In this paper, we try to address this problem in such a broad context that band structure of three dimensional isotropic photonic crystals with all 14 Bravais lattices can be efficiently computed in a unified framework. We uncover the delicate machinery behind several key results of our work and on the basis of this new understanding we drastically simplify the derivations, proofs and arguments in our framework. In this work particular effort is made on reformulating the Bloch boundary condition for all 14 Bravais lattices in the redefined orthogonal coordinate system, and establishing eigen-decomposition of discrete partial derivative operators by systematic use of commutativity among them, which has been overlooked previously, and reducing eigen-decomposition of double-curl operator to the canonical form of a 3x3 complex skew-symmetric matrix under unitary congruence. With the validity of the novel nullspace free method in the broad context, we perform some calculations on one benchmark system to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our algorithm., Comment: 37 pages, 20 figures

The discretized Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problem arises in the Green's function evaluation in many body physics and quantum chemistry. Discretization leads to a matrix eigenvalue problem for $H \in \mathbb{C}^{2n\times 2n}$ with a Hamiltonian-like structure. After an appropriate transformation of $H$ to a standard symplectic form, the structure-preserving doubling algorithm, originally for algebraic Riccati equations, is extended for the discretized Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problem. Potential breakdowns of the algorithm, due to the ill condition or singularity of certain matrices, can be avoided with a double-Cayley transform or a three-recursion remedy. A detailed convergence analysis is conducted for the proposed algorithm, especially on the benign effects of the double-Cayley transform. Principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely used in analyzing high-dimensional data. It converts a set of observed data points of possibly correlated variables into a set of linearly uncorrelated variables via an orthogonal transformation. To handle streaming data and reduce the complexities of PCA, (subspace) online PCA iterations were proposed to iteratively update the orthogonal transformation by taking one observed data point at a time. Existing works on the convergence of (subspace) online PCA iterations mostly focus on the case where sample are almost surely uniformly bounded. In this paper, we analyze the convergence of a subspace online PCA iteration under more practical assumption and obtain a nearly optimal finite-sample error bound. Our convergence rate almost matches the minimax information lower bound. We prove that the convergence is nearly global in the sense that the subspace online PCA iteration is convergent with high probability for random initial guesses. In this paper, we study intermittent behaviors of coupled piecewise-expanding map lattices with two nodes and a weak coupling. We show that the successive phase transition between ordered and disordered phases occurs for almost every orbit. That is, we prove $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|=0$ and $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|\ge c_0>0$, where $x_1(n), x_2(n)$ correspond to the coordinates of two nodes at the iterative step $n$. The eigenvalue problem of a graph Laplacian matrix $L$ arising from a simple, connected and undirected graph has been given more attention due to its extensive applications, such as spectral clustering, community detection, complex network, image processing and so on. The associated graph Laplacian matrix is symmetric, positive semi-definite, and is usually large and sparse. Computing some smallest positive eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors is often of interest. However, the singularity of $L$ makes the classical eigensolvers inefficient since we need to factorize $L$ for the purpose of solving large and sparse linear systems exactly. The next difficulty is that it is usually time consuming or even unavailable to factorize a large and sparse matrix arising from real network problems from big data such as social media transactional databases, and sensor systems because there is in general not only local connections. In this paper, we propose an eignsolver based on the inexact residual Arnoldi method together with an implicit remedy of the singularity and an effective deflation for convergent eigenvalues. Numerical experiments reveal that the integrated eigensolver outperforms the classical Arnoldi/Lanczos method for computing some smallest positive eigeninformation provided the LU factorization is not available.

Surface parameterizations have been widely applied to computer graphics and digital geometry processing. In this paper, we propose a novel stretch energy minimization (SEM) algorithm for the computation of equiareal parameterizations of simply connected open surfaces with a very small area distortion and a highly improved computational efficiency. In addition, the existence of nontrivial limit points of the SEM algorithm is guaranteed under some mild assumptions of the mesh quality. Numerical experiments indicate that the efficiency, accuracy, and robustness of the proposed SEM algorithm outperform other state-of-the-art algorithms. Applications of the SEM on surface remeshing and surface registration for simply connected open surfaces are demonstrated thereafter. We propose a modified Newton iteration for finding some nonnegative Z-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor. When the tensor is irreducible, all nonnegative eigenpairs are known to be positive. We prove local quadratic convergence of the new iteration to any positive eigenpair of a nonnegative tensor, under the usual assumption guaranteeing the local quadratic convergence of the original Newton iteration. A big advantage of the modified Newton iteration is that it seems capable of finding a nonnegative eigenpair starting with any positive unit vector. Special attention is paid to transition probability tensors.

In this paper, a homotopy continuation method for the computation of nonnegative Z-/H-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor is presented. We show that the homotopy continuation method is guaranteed to compute a nonnegative eigenpair. Additionally, using degree analysis, we show that the number of positive Z-eigenpairs of an irreducible nonnegative tensor is odd. A novel homotopy continuation method is proposed to compute an odd number of positive Z-eigenpairs, and some numerical results are presented., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures

Morphing is the process of changing one figure into another. Some numerical methods of 3D surface morphing by deformable modeling and conformal mapping are shown in this study. It is well known that there exists a unique Riemann conformal mapping from a simply connected surface into a unit disk by the Riemann mapping theorem. The dilation and relative orientations of the 3D surfaces can be linked through the M\"obius transformation due to the conformal characteristic of the Riemann mapping. On the other hand, a 3D surface deformable model can be built via various approaches such as mutual parameterization from direct interpolation or surface matching using landmarks. In this paper, we take the advantage of the unique representation of 3D surfaces by the mean curvatures and the conformal factors associated with the Riemann mapping. By registering the landmarks on the conformal parametric domains, the correspondence of the mean curvatures and the conformal factors for each surfaces can be obtained. As a result, we can construct the 3D deformation field from the surface reconstruction algorithm proposed by Gu and Yau. Furthermore, by composition of the M\"obius transformation and the 3D deformation field, the morphing sequence can be generated from the mean curvatures and the conformal factors on a unified mesh structure by using the cubic spline homotopy. Therefore, blow-ups for the structure-preserving flows may happen at a finite $t$. To continue, we then utilize the Grassmann manifolds to extend the domain of the structure-preserving flow to the whole $\mathbb{R}$ subtracting some isolated points.
