Robots, particularly in service and companionship roles, must develop positive relationships with people they interact with regularly to be successful. These positive human-robot relationships can be characterized as establishing "rapport," which indicates mutual understanding and interpersonal connection that form the groundwork for successful long-term human-robot interaction. However, the human-robot interaction research literature lacks scale instruments to assess human-robot rapport in a variety of situations. In this work, we developed the 18-item Connection-Coordination Rapport (CCR) Scale to measure human-robot rapport. We first ran Study 1 (N = 288) where online participants rated videos of human-robot interactions using a set of candidate items. Our Study 1 results showed the discovery of two factors in our scale, which we named "Connection" and "Coordination." We then evaluated this scale by running Study 2 (N = 201) where online participants rated a new set of human-robot interaction videos with our scale and an existing rapport scale from virtual agents research for comparison. We also validated our scale by replicating a prior in-person human-robot interaction study, Study 3 (N = 44), and found that rapport is rated significantly greater when participants interacted with a responsive robot (responsive condition) as opposed to an unresponsive robot (unresponsive condition). Results from these studies demonstrate high reliability and validity for the CCR scale, which can be used to measure rapport in both first-person and third-person perspectives. Recent advancements in omnimodal learning have been achieved in understanding and generation across images, text, and speech, though mainly within proprietary models. Limited omnimodal datasets and the inherent challenges associated with real-time emotional speech generation have hindered open-source progress. To address these issues, we propose openomni, a two-stage training method combining omnimodal alignment and speech generation to develop a state-of-the-art omnimodal large language model. In the alignment phase, a pre-trained speech model is further trained on text-image tasks to generalize from vision to speech in a (near) zero-shot manner, outperforming models trained on tri-modal datasets. In the speech generation phase, a lightweight decoder facilitates real-time emotional speech through training on speech tasks and preference learning. Experiments demonstrate that openomni consistently improves across omnimodal, vision-language, and speech-language evaluations, enabling natural, emotion-rich dialogues and real-time emotional speech generation.

Creating a heterostructure by combining two magnetically and structurally distinct ruthenium oxides is a crucial approach for investigating their emergent magnetic states and interactions. Previously, research has predominantly concentrated on the intrinsic properties of the ferromagnet SrRuO3 and recently discovered altermagnet RuO2 solely. Here, we engineered an ultrasharp sublattice-matched heterointerface using pseudo-cubic SrRuO3 and rutile RuO2, conducting an in-depth analysis of their spin interactions. Structurally, to accommodate the lattice symmetry mismatch, the inverted RuO2 layer undergoes an in-plane rotation of 18 degrees during epitaxial growth on SrRuO3 layer, resulting in an interesting and rotational interface with perfect crystallinity and negligible chemical intermixing. Performance-wise, the interfacial layer of 6 nm in RuO2 adjacent to SrRuO3 exhibits a nonzero magnetic moment, contributing to an enhanced anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at low temperatures. Furthermore, our observations indicate that, in contrast to SrRuO3 single layers, the AHE of [(RuO2)15/(SrRuO3)n] heterostructures shows nonlinear behavior and reaches its maximum when the SrRuO3 thickness reaches tens of nm. These results suggest that the interfacial magnetic interaction surpasses that of all-perovskite oxides (~5-unit cells). We construct the first explicit two-sided vertex expanders that bypass the spectral barrier. Previously, the strongest known explicit vertex expanders were given by $d$-regular Ramanujan graphs, whose spectral properties imply that every small subset of vertices $S$ has at least $0.5d|S|$ distinct neighbors. However, it is possible to construct Ramanujan graphs containing a small set $S$ with no more than $0.5d|S|$ neighbors. In fact, no explicit construction was known to break the $0.5 d$-barrier. In this work, we give an explicit construction of an infinite family of $d$-regular graphs (for large enough $d$) where every small set expands by a factor of $\approx 0.6d$. More generally, for large enough $d_1,d_2$, we give an infinite family of $(d_1,d_2)$-biregular graphs where small sets on the left expand by a factor of $\approx 0.6d_1$, and small sets on the right expand by a factor of $\approx 0.6d_2$. In fact, our construction satisfies an even stronger property: small sets on the left and right have unique-neighbor expansion $0.6d_1$ and $0.6d_2$ respectively. Our construction follows the tripartite line product framework of Hsieh, McKenzie, Mohanty & Paredes, and instantiates it using the face-vertex incidence of the $4$-dimensional Ramanujan clique complex as its base component. The increasing frequency and severity of wildfires pose significant risks to communities, infrastructure, and the environment, especially in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas. Effective disaster management requires understanding how the public perceives and responds to wildfire threats in real-time. This study uses social media data to assess public responses and explores how these responses are linked to city-level community characteristics. Specifically, we leveraged a transformer-based topic modeling technique called BERTopic to identify wildfire response-related topics and then utilized the Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model to compute two key metrics associated with wildfire responses - awareness and resilience indicators. Additionally, we used GIS-based spatial analysis to map wildfire locations along with four groups of city-level factors (racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, demographic, and wildfire-specific). Our findings reveal significant geographic and socio-spatial differences in public responses. Southern California cities with larger Hispanic populations demonstrate higher wildfire awareness and resilience. In contrast, urbanized regions in Central and Northern California exhibit lower awareness levels. Furthermore, resilience is negatively correlated with unemployment rates, particularly in southern regions where higher unemployment aligns with reduced resilience. These findings highlight the need for targeted and equitable wildfire management strategies to improve the adaptive capacity of WUI communities.

High-performance analog and mixed-signal (AMS) circuits are mainly full-custom designed, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. A significant portion of the effort is experience-driven, which makes the automation of AMS circuit design a formidable challenge. Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful tools for Electronic Design Automation (EDA) applications, fostering advancements in the automatic design process for large-scale AMS circuits. However, the absence of high-quality datasets has led to issues such as model hallucination, which undermines the robustness of automatically generated circuit designs. To address this issue, this paper introduces AMSnet-KG, a dataset encompassing various AMS circuit schematics and netlists. We construct a knowledge graph with annotations on detailed functional and performance characteristics. Facilitated by AMSnet-KG, we propose an automated AMS circuit generation framework that utilizes the comprehensive knowledge embedded in LLMs. We first formulate a design strategy (e.g., circuit architecture using a number of circuit components) based on required specifications. Next, matched circuit components are retrieved and assembled into a complete topology, and transistor sizing is obtained through Bayesian optimization. Simulation results of the netlist are fed back to the LLM for further topology refinement, ensuring the circuit design specifications are met. We perform case studies of operational amplifier and comparator design to verify the automatic design flow from specifications to netlists with minimal human effort. The dataset used in this paper will be open-sourced upon publishing of this paper.

A self-correcting quantum memory is a type of quantum error correcting code that can correct errors passively through cooling. A major open question in the field is whether self-correcting quantum memories can exist in 3D. In this work, we propose two candidate constructions for 3D self-correcting quantum memories. The first construction is an extension of Haah's code, which retains translation invariance. The second construction is based on fractals with greater flexibility in its design. Additionally, we review existing 3D quantum codes and suggest that they are not self-correcting.

Geometrically local quantum codes, which are error-correcting codes embedded in $\mathbb{R}^D$ with the checks only acting on qubits within a fixed spatial distance, have garnered significant interest. Recently, it has been demonstrated how to achieve geometrically local codes that maximize both the dimension and the distance, as well as the energy barrier of the code. In this work, we focus on the constructions involving subdivision and show that they have an almost linear time decoder, obtained by combining the decoder of the outer good qLDPC code and a generalized version of the Union-Find decoder. This provides the first decoder for an optimal 3D geometrically local code. We also consider the decoder under random circuit level noise and demonstrate the existence of a finite threshold error rate., Comment: 26 pages

For every integer $r\geq 2$ and every $\epsilon>0$, we construct an explicit infinite family of quantum LDPC codes supporting a transversal $C^{r-1}Z$ gate with length $N$, dimension $K\geq N^{1-\epsilon}$, distance $D\geq N^{1/r}/\operatorname{poly}(\log N)$, and stabilizer weight $w\leq\operatorname{poly}(\log N)$. The previous state of the art construction (in most parameter regimes) was the $r$-dimensional color code, which has only constant dimension $K=O(1)$, and otherwise has the same parameters up to polylogarithmic factors. Our construction provides the first known codes with low-weight stabilizers that are capable of magic state distillation with arbitrarily small yield parameter $\gamma=\log(N/K)/\log(D)>0$. A classical analogue of transversal $C^{r-1}Z$ gates is given by the multiplication property, which requires component-wise products of classical codewords to belong to another similar code. As a byproduct of our techniques, we also obtain a new construction of classical locally testable codes with such a multiplication property. We construct our codes as products of chain complexes associated to classical LDPC codes, which in turn we obtain by imposing local Reed-Solomon codes on a specific spectral expander that we construct. We prove that our codes support the desired transversal $C^{r-1}Z$ gates by using the multiplication property to combine local circuits based on the topological structure.

A major goal in quantum computing is to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer. One approach involves quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes that support transversal non-Clifford gates. In this work, we provide a large family of such codes. The key insight is to interpret the logical operators of qLDPC codes as geometric surfaces and use the intersection number of these surfaces to define the non-Clifford operation. At a more abstract level, this construction is based on defining the cup product on the chain complex induced from a sheaf.

The development of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has seen significant advancements with increasing demands in various fields (e.g., multimodal agents, embodied intelligence). While model-driven approaches attempt to enhance MLLMs capabilities through diverse architectures, the gains have become increasingly marginal. Conversely, data-driven methods, which scale up image-text instruction data, are more effective but face limited data diversity and complexity challenges. The absence of high-quality data constitutes a significant development barrier for MLLMs. To address the data quality bottleneck, we propose MMEvol, a novel multimodal instruction data evolution framework. This framework iteratively improve data quality through a refined combination of fine-grained perception, cognitive reasoning, and interaction evolution, generating a more complex and diverse image-text instruction dataset that empowers MLLMs with enhanced capabilities. Beginning with an initial set of instructions, SEED-163K, we utilize MMEvol to systematically broaden the diversity of instruction types, extend visual reasoning steps to improve cognitive reasoning abilities, and thoroughly explore fine-grained information within images to enhance visual understanding and robustness. To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct extensive qualitative analysis and quantitative experiments across 13 vision-language tasks. Compared to baseline models trained with the initial seed data, the results demonstrate that our method achieves an average accuracy improvement of 3.1 percentage points. Furthermore, our approach reaches state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance in nine tasks using significantly less data compared to state-of-the-art models.

Chirality is a property of a gapped phase of matter in two spatial dimensions that can be manifested through non-zero thermal or electrical Hall conductance. In this paper, we prove two no-go theorems that forbid such chirality for a quantum state in a finite dimensional local Hilbert space with strict area law entanglement entropies. Geometrically local quantum codes, comprised of qubits and checks embedded in $\mathbb{R}^D$ with local check operators, have been a subject of significant interest. A key challenge is identifying the optimal code construction that maximizes both dimension and distance. Recent advancements have produced several constructions, but these either depend on specific good quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes or are limited to three dimensions. In this work, we introduce a construction that can transform any good qLDPC code into an optimal geometrically local quantum code. Our approach hinges on a novel procedure that extracts a two-dimensional structure from an arbitrary three-term chain complex. We expect that this procedure will find broader applications in areas such as weight reduction and the geometric realization of chain complexes., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

This paper addresses the sufficient and necessary conditions for constructing $C^r$ conforming finite element spaces from a superspline spaces on general simplicial triangulations. We introduce the concept of extendability for the pre-element spaces, which encompasses both the superspline space and the finite element space. By examining the extendability condition for both types of spaces, we provide an answer to the conditions regarding the construction. A corollary of our results is that constructing $C^r$ conforming elements in $d$ dimensions should in general require an extra $C^{2^{s}r}$ continuity on $s$-codimensional simplices, and the polynomial degree is at least $(2^d r + 1)$., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Electric field control of the magnetic state in ferrimagnets holds great promise for developing spintronic devices due to low power consumption. Here, we demonstrate a non-volatile reversal of perpendicular net magnetization in a ferrimagnet by manipulating the electric-field driven polarization within the Pb (Zr0.2Ti0.8) O3 (PZT)/CoGd heterostructure. Electron energy loss spectra and X-ray absorption spectrum directly verify that the oxygen ion migration at the PZT/CoGd interface associated with reversing the polarization causes the enhanced/reduced oxidation in CoGd. Ab initio calculations further substantiate that the migrated oxygen ions can modulate the relative magnetization of Co/Gd sublattices, facilitating perpendicular net magnetization switching. Expressive music synthesis (EMS) for violin performance is a challenging task due to the disagreement among music performers in the interpretation of expressive musical terms (EMTs), scarcity of labeled recordings, and limited generalization ability of the synthesis model. These challenges create trade-offs between model effectiveness, diversity of generated results, and controllability of the synthesis system, making it essential to conduct a comparative study on EMS model design. This paper explores two violin EMS approaches. The end-to-end approach is a modification of a state-of-the-art text-to-speech generator. The parameter-controlled approach is based on a simple parameter sampling process that can render note lengths and other parameters compatible with MIDI-DDSP. In cross-modal music processing, translation between visual, auditory, and semantic content opens up new possibilities as well as challenges. The construction of such a transformative scheme depends upon a benchmark corpus with a comprehensive data infrastructure. In particular, the assembly of a large-scale cross-modal dataset presents major challenges. In this paper, we present the MOSA (Music mOtion with Semantic Annotation) dataset, which contains high quality 3-D motion capture data, aligned audio recordings, and note-by-note semantic annotations of pitch, beat, phrase, dynamic, articulation, and harmony for 742 professional music performances by 23 professional musicians, comprising more than 30 hours and 570 K notes of data. To our knowledge, this is the largest cross-modal music dataset with note-level annotations to date. To demonstrate the usage of the MOSA dataset, we present several innovative cross-modal music information retrieval (MIR) and musical content generation tasks, including the detection of beats, downbeats, phrase, and expressive contents from audio, video and motion data, and the generation of musicians' body motion from given music audio. The development of large language models (LLMs) has significantly advanced the emergence of large multimodal models (LMMs). While LMMs have achieved tremendous success by promoting the synergy between multimodal comprehension and creation, they often face challenges when confronted with out-of-distribution data, such as which can hardly distinguish orientation, quantity, color, structure, etc. This is primarily due to their reliance on image encoders trained to encode images into task-relevant features, which may lead them to disregard irrelevant details. Delving into the modeling capabilities of diffusion models for images naturally prompts the question: Can diffusion models serve as the eyes of large language models for image perception? In this paper, we propose DEEM, a simple but effective approach that utilizes the generative feedback of diffusion models to align the semantic distributions of the image encoder. This addresses the drawbacks of previous methods that solely relied on image encoders like CLIP-ViT, thereby enhancing the model's resilience against out-of-distribution samples and reducing visual hallucinations. Importantly, this is achieved without requiring additional training modules and with fewer training parameters. We extensively evaluated DEEM on both our newly constructed RobustVQA benchmark and other well-known benchmarks, POPE and MMVP, for visual hallucination and perception. In particular, DEEM improves LMM's visual perception performance to a large extent (e.g., 4% higher on RobustVQA, 6.5% higher on MMVP and 12.8 % higher on POPE ). Compared to the state-of-the-art interleaved content generation models, DEEM exhibits enhanced robustness and a superior capacity to alleviate model hallucinations while utilizing fewer trainable parameters, less pre-training data (10%), and a smaller base model size., Comment: 25 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2401.10208 by other authors

Understanding the origin of transverse single-spin asymmetries is a long-standing challenge in strong interaction physics. Recent precise measurements of the azimuthal distribution of charged pions in jets from STAR have shed new light on the spin momentum correlations within the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) formalism. This measurement, particularly sensitive to the Collins effect, correlates the quark transversity with the Collins fragmentation functions, elucidating the spin-dependent fragmentation process. Moreover, similar measurements involving kaons and protons, which have unique quark compositions, provide vital insights into the flavor-dependent spin dynamics of the parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. These studies are crucial for developing a more comprehensive understanding of nucleon spin structure. Today's analog/mixed-signal (AMS) integrated circuit (IC) designs demand substantial manual intervention. The advent of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) has unveiled significant potential across various fields, suggesting their applicability in streamlining large-scale AMS IC design as well. A bottleneck in employing MLLMs for automatic AMS circuit generation is the absence of a comprehensive dataset delineating the schematic-netlist relationship. We therefore design an automatic technique for converting schematics into netlists, and create dataset AMSNet, encompassing transistor-level schematics and corresponding SPICE format netlists. With a growing size, AMSNet can significantly facilitate exploration of MLLM applications in AMS circuit design. We have made an initial set of netlists public, and will make both our netlist generation tool and the full dataset available upon publishing of this paper.

Documents that consist of diverse templates and exhibit complex spatial structures pose a challenge for document entity classification. We propose KNN-former, which incorporates a new kind of spatial bias in attention calculation based on the K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) graph of document entities. We limit entities' attention only to their local radius defined by the KNN graph. We also use combinatorial matching to address the one-to-one mapping property that exists in many documents, where one field has only one corresponding entity. Moreover, our method is highly parameter-efficient compared to existing approaches in terms of the number of trainable parameters. Despite this, experiments across various datasets show our method outperforms baselines in most entity types. Many real-world documents exhibit combinatorial properties which can be leveraged as inductive biases to improve extraction accuracy, but existing datasets do not cover these documents. To facilitate future research into these types of documents, we release a new ID document dataset that covers diverse templates and languages. We also release enhanced annotations for an existing dataset.

Large language models (LLMs) have significantly advanced in various fields and intelligent agent applications. However, current LLMs that learn from human or external model supervision are costly and may face performance ceilings as task complexity and diversity increase. To address this issue, self-evolution approaches that enable LLM to autonomously acquire, refine, and learn from experiences generated by the model itself are rapidly growing. This new training paradigm inspired by the human experiential learning process offers the potential to scale LLMs towards superintelligence. In this work, we present a comprehensive survey of self-evolution approaches in LLMs. We first propose a conceptual framework for self-evolution and outline the evolving process as iterative cycles composed of four phases: experience acquisition, experience refinement, updating, and evaluation. Second, we categorize the evolution objectives of LLMs and LLM-based agents; then, we summarize the literature and provide taxonomy and insights for each module. We show that in two spatial dimensions, when a quantum state has entanglement entropy obeying a strict area law, meaning $S(A)=\alpha |\partial A| - \gamma$ for constants $\alpha, \gamma$ independent of lattice region $A$, then it admits a commuting parent Hamiltonian. More generally, we prove that the entanglement bootstrap axioms in 2D imply the existence of a commuting, local parent Hamiltonian with a stable spectral gap. We also extend our proof to states that describe gapped domain walls. Physically, these results imply that the states studied in the entanglement bootstrap program correspond to ground states of some local Hamiltonian, describing a stable phase of matter. Our result also suggests that systems with chiral gapless edge modes cannot obey a strict area law provided they have finite local Hilbert space., Comment: 19+2 pages, 10 figures

In a physical system with conformal symmetry, observables depend on cross-ratios, measures of distance invariant under global conformal transformations (conformal geometry for short). We identify a quantum information-theoretic mechanism by which the conformal geometry emerges at the gapless edge of a 2+1D quantum many-body system with a bulk energy gap. We introduce a novel pair of information-theoretic quantities $(\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}, \eta)$ that can be defined locally on the edge from the wavefunction of the many-body system, without prior knowledge of any distance measure. We posit that, for a topological groundstate, the quantity $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is stationary under arbitrary variations of the quantum state, and study the logical consequences. We show that stationarity, modulo an entanglement-based assumption about the bulk, implies (i) $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is a non-negative constant that can be interpreted as the total central charge of the edge theory. (ii) $\eta$ is a cross-ratio, obeying the full set of mathematical consistency rules, which further indicates the existence of a distance measure of the edge with global conformal invariance. Thus, the conformal geometry emerges from a simple assumption on groundstate entanglement. We show that stationarity of $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is equivalent to a vector fixed-point equation involving $\eta$, making our assumption locally checkable. Chiral edges of 2+1D systems can have very robust emergent conformal symmetry. When the edge is purely chiral, the Hilbert space of low-energy edge excitations can form a representation of a single Virasoro algebra. We propose a method to systematically extract the generators of the Virasoro algebra from a single ground state wavefunction, using entanglement bootstrap and an input from the edge conformal field theory. We corroborate our construction by numerically verifying the commutation relations of the generators. We also study the unitary flows generated by these operators, whose properties (such as energy and state overlap) are shown numerically to agree with our analytical predictions., Comment: 60+20 pages, 28 figures

The analysis of dynamic organelles remains a formidable challenge, though key to understanding biological processes. We introduce Nellie, an automated and unbiased user-friendly pipeline for segmentation, tracking, and feature extraction of diverse intracellular structures. Nellie adapts to image metadata, eliminating user input. Nellie's preprocessing pipeline enhances structural contrast on multiple intracellular scales allowing for robust hierarchical segmentation of sub-organellar regions. Internal motion capture markers are generated and tracked via a radius-adaptive pattern matching scheme, and used as guides for sub-voxel flow interpolation. Nellie extracts a plethora of features at multiple hierarchical levels for deep and customizable analysis. Nellie features a point-and-click Napari-based GUI that allows for code-free operation and visualization, while its modular open-source codebase invites extension by experienced users. We demonstrate Nellie's wide variety of use cases with three examples: unmixing multiple organelles from a single channel using feature-based classification, training an unsupervised graph autoencoder on mitochondrial multi-mesh graphs to quantify latent space embedding changes following ionomycin treatment, and performing in-depth characterization and comparison of endoplasmic reticulum networks across different cell types and temporal frames., Comment: 134 pages, 6 main figures, 6 extended figures, 8 supplementary figures; for associated code, see https://github.com/aelefebv/nellie

In reasoning tasks, even a minor error can cascade into inaccurate results, leading to suboptimal performance of large language models in such domains. Earlier fine-tuning approaches sought to mitigate this by leveraging more precise supervisory signals from human labeling, larger models, or self-sampling, although at a high cost. Conversely, we develop a method that avoids external resources, relying instead on introducing perturbations to the input. Our training approach randomly masks certain tokens within the chain of thought, a technique we found to be particularly effective for reasoning tasks. When applied to fine-tuning with GSM8K on Llama-2-7B, this method achieved a 5\% improvement in GSM8K accuracy and a 10\% improvement in GSM-IC accuracy over standard supervised fine-tuning with a few codes modified. Furthermore, it is complementary to existing methods. When integrated with related explicit data augmentation methods, it leads to improvements across five datasets of various augmentation methods, as well as two different base models. We further investigate the mechanisms behind this improvement through case studies and quantitative analysis, suggesting that our approach may provide superior support for the model in capturing long-distance dependencies, especially those related to questions. Understanding the internal spin structure of the nucleon remains a challenge in strong interaction physics. The unique capability of RHIC opened new avenues in studying the internal structure of the proton with unprecedented depth and precision. Significant progress has been made in the last few years through various measurements at STAR. The longitudinal spin measurements have contributed significantly to our understanding of the quark and gluon helicity distributions inside the proton. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, from STAR inclusive jet and dijet measurements provides the first evidence of a positive gluon polarization with partonic momentum fraction $x > 0.05$. The reconstruction of $W^{\pm}/Z$ in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions indicates that there is a flavor separation of the light sea quark helicity distributions. In transversely polarized proton collisions, $W^{\pm}/Z$-bosons provide the first constraint on the sea-quark Sivers function and contributes to the tests of the predicted sign change. The tilt of the dijet opening angle provides a direct access to the first Mellin momentum of the Sivers function and avoids the spin-correlated fragmentation contributions. The novel measurements of the azimuthal distributions of identified hadrons in jets and spin-dependent dihadron correlations directly probe the collinear quark transversity in the proton, with the former coupled to the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) Collins fragmentation function and the latter to the dihadron interference fragmentation function. These measurements shed lights on Sivers function, quark transversity and spin-dependent fragmentation functions in both collinear and TMD formalism. How quarks and gluons conspire to provide the total spin of proton is a long-standing puzzle in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The unique capability of RHIC, that can provide longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions at both $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV, opened new territory to constrain the helicity structure of the proton with unprecedented depth and precision. Results from various STAR spin measurements have contributed significantly to our understanding of the quark and gluon helicity distributions inside the proton. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, from the STAR 2009 inclusive jet measurement, provides the first indication of the positive gluon polarization with partonic momentum fraction $x$ greater than 0.05 inside the proton. More precise measurements using the $p+p$ data collected in 2012, 2013 and 2015 at both $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 and 200 GeV confirm the previous findings and provide additional constraints in the largely unexplored region of $x < 0.05$. Compared to the inclusive jet observables, analyses of dijet production extending to higher pseudorapidity (up to $\eta \sim 1.8$) provide better constraints on the $x$ dependent behavior of $\Delta g(x)$. Moreover, the reconstruction of $W^{\pm}$ in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions provides significant constraints on the flavor separation of the light sea quark helicity distributions inside the proton, while the longitudinal spin transfer to $\Lambda$ and $\bar \Lambda$ hyperons provides access to the helicity of strange and anti-strange quarks in the proton. Intermolecular interactions are crucial in determining the morphology of solution-processed semiconducting polymer thin films. However, these random interactions often lead to disordered or short-range ordered structures. Achieving long-range order in these films has been a challenge due to limited control over microscopic interactions in current techniques. Here, we present a molecular-level methodology that leverages spatial matching of intermolecular dynamics among solutes, solvents, and substrates to induce directional molecular assembly in weakly bonded polymers. Within the optimized dynamic scale of 2.5 \r{A} between polymer side chains and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on nanogrooved substrates, our approach transforms random aggregates into unidirectional fibers with a remarkable increase in the anisotropic stacking ratio from 1 to 11. The Flory-Huggins-based molecular stacking model accurately predicts the transitioning order on various SAMs, validated by morphologic and spectroscopic observations. The enhanced structural ordering spans over 3 orders of magnitude in length, raising from the smallest 7.3 nm random crystallites to >14 um unidirectional fibers on sub-millimeter areas. We introduce a high-dimensional cubical complex, for any dimension t>0, and apply it to the design of quantum locally testable codes. Our complex is a natural generalization of the constructions by Panteleev and Kalachev and by Dinur et. al of a square complex (case t=2), which have been applied to the design of classical locally testable codes (LTC) and quantum low-density parity check codes (qLDPC) respectively. We turn the geometric (cubical) complex into a chain complex by relying on constant-sized local codes $h_1,\ldots,h_t$ as gadgets. A recent result of Panteleev and Kalachev on existence of tuples of codes that are product expanding enables us to prove lower bounds on the cycle and co-cycle expansion of our chain complex. For t=4 our construction gives a new family of "almost-good" quantum LTCs -- with constant relative rate, inverse-polylogarithmic relative distance and soundness, and constant-size parity checks. Image restoration is a class of important tasks that emerges from a wide range of scientific disciplines. It has been noticed that most practical images can be modeled as a composition from a sparse singularity set (edges) where the image contents or their gradients change drastically, and cartoon chunks in which a high degree of regularity is dominant. Enhancing edges while promoting regularity elsewhere has been an important criterion for successful restoration in many image classes. In this article, we present a wavelet frame based image restoration model that captures potential edges and facilitates the restoration procedure by a dedicated treatment both of singularity and of cartoon. Moreover, its geometric robustness is enhanced by exploiting subtle inter-scale information available in the coarse image. To substantiate our intuition, we prove that this model converges to one variant of the celebrated Mumford-Shah model when adequate asymptotic specifications are given., Comment: 42 pages

In this paper, we demonstrate that an inherent waveform pattern in the attention allocation of large language models (LLMs) significantly affects their performance in tasks demanding a high degree of context awareness, such as utilizing LLMs for tool-use. Specifically, the crucial information in the context will be potentially overlooked by model when it is positioned in the trough zone of the attention waveform, leading to decreased performance. To address this issue, we propose a novel inference method named Attention Buckets. It allows LLMs to process their input through multiple parallel processes. Each process utilizes a distinct base angle for the rotary position embedding, thereby creating a unique attention waveform. By compensating an attention trough of a particular process with an attention peak of another process, our approach enhances LLM's awareness to various contextual positions, thus mitigating the risk of overlooking crucial information. In the largest tool-use benchmark, our method elevates a 7B model to achieve state-of-the-art performance, comparable to that of GPT-4.
