Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) associations are critical for host-tree performance. However, how mycorrhizal associations correlate with the latitudinal tree beta-diversity remains untested. Using a global dataset of 45 forest plots representing 2,804,270 trees across 3840 species, we test how AM and EcM trees contribute to total beta-diversity and its components (turnover and nestedness) of all trees. We find AM rather than EcM trees predominantly contribute to decreasing total beta-diversity and turnover and increasing nestedness with increasing latitude, probably because wide distributions of EcM trees do not generate strong compositional differences among localities. Environmental variables, especially temperature and precipitation, are strongly correlated with beta-diversity patterns for both AM trees and all trees rather than EcM trees. Results support our hypotheses that latitudinal beta-diversity patterns and environmental effects on these patterns are highly dependent on mycorrhizal types. Our findings highlight the importance of AM-dominated forests for conserving global forest biodiversity.

Questions: All else being equal, populations of dioecious species with a 50:50 sex ratio have only half the effective reproductive population size of bisexual species of equal abundance. Consequently, there is a need to explain how dioecious and bisexual species coexist. Increased mean individual seed mass, fecundity, and population density have all been proposed as attributes of unisexual individuals or populations that may contribute to the persistence or resilience of dioecious species. To date, no studies have compared sympatric dioecious and cosexual species with respect to all three components of fitness. In this study, we sought evidence for these compensatory advantages (higher seed mass, greater seed production per unit basal area, and higher population density) in dioecious species. Location: Five 20–25 ha forest dynamic plots spanning a latitudinal gradient in China, including two temperate, two subtropical, and one tropical forest. Methods: We used a phylogenetically corrected generalized linear modelling approach to assess the phylogenetic dependence and joint evolution of sexual system, seed mass and production, and ecological abundances among 48–333 species and 32,568–136,237 individuals per forest. Results: Across all five forests, we detected no consistent advantage for dioecious relative to sympatric cosexual species with respect to mean individual seed mass, seed production or the density of stems in any size class. Conclusions: Our study suggests that seed traits may provide compensatory mechanisms in some forests, but most often the coexistence of sexual systems cannot be explained by advantages of dioecy related to seed quality and demographic parameters. Future investigations of the factors that promote coexistence may increase our understanding by expanding the search to include attributes such as lifespan and tolerance or resistance to herbivores.

Light availability (LAv) dictates a variety of biological and ecological processes across a range of spatiotemporal scales. Quantifying the spatial pattern of LAv in three‐dimensional (3D) space can promote the understanding of microclimates that are critical to fine‐scale species distribution. However, there is still a lack of tools that are robust to evaluate spatiotemporal heterogeneity of LAv in forests.Here, we propose the Forest Light Analyzer python package (FLApy), an open‐source computational tool designed for the analysis of intra‐forest LAv variation across multiple spatial scales. FLApy is freely invoked by Python, facilitating the processing of LiDAR point cloud data into a 3D data container constructed by voxels, as well as traversal calculations related to the LAv regime by high performance synthetic hemispherical algorithm. Furthermore, FLApy incorporates 37 indicators, enabling users to expediently export and visualize LAv patterns and the evaluation of heterogeneity of LAv at two scales (voxel scale and 3D‐cluster scale) for a range of fine‐scale ecological study purposes.To validate the efficacy of the FLApy, we employed a simulated point cloud dataset that simulates forests (varying in canopy closure). Furthermore, to evaluate real world forest, we executed the standard workflow of FLApy utilizing drone‐derived data from three subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest dynamics plots within the Ailao Mountain Reserve. Our findings underscore that a series of indices derived from FLApy provide a robust characterization of light availability heterogeneity within diverse forest settings. Additionally, when juxtaposed with conventional monitoring techniques, the metrics offered by FLApy demonstrated better generality in our field assessments.FLApy offers ecologists a solution for rapid quantification of understory light 3D‐regimes across multiple scales, addressing the disparity between traditional manual approaches and the precision required for contemporary ecological studies. Moreover, FLApy provides robust support for the establishment and expansion of heterogeneity indices based on 3D micro‐environments, enhancing our understanding of the largely uncharted 3D structural patterns. Anticipated outcomes suggest that FLApy will enhance our knowledge concerning the intra‐forest climatic conditions into a 3D context, proving pivotal in the delineation of microhabitats and the development of detailed 3D‐scale species distribution models. Enhanced silicate rock weathering (ERW) is an emerging strategy for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere to mitigate anthropogenic climate change. ERW aims at promoting soil inorganic carbon sequestration by accelerating geochemical weathering processes. Theoretically, ERW may also impact soil organic carbon (SOC), the largest carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems, but experimental evidence for this is largely lacking. Here, we conducted a 2‐year field experiment in tropical rubber plantations in the southeast of China to evaluate the effects of wollastonite powder additions (0, 0.25, and 0.5 kg m−2) on both soil organic and inorganic carbon at 0–10 cm depth. We found that ERW significantly increased the concentration of SOC and HCO3−, but the increases in SOC were four and eight times higher than that of HCO3− with low‐ and high‐level wollastonite applications. ERW had positive effects on the accrual of organic carbon in mineral‐associated organic matter (MAOM) and macroaggregate fractions, but not on particulate organic matter. Path analysis suggested that ERW increased MAOM mainly by increasing the release of Ca, Si, and Fe, and to a lesser extent by stimulating root growth and microbial‐derived carbon inputs. Our study indicates that ERW with wollastonite can promote SOC sequestration in stable MOAM in surface soils through both the soil mineral carbon pump and microbial carbon pump. To understand soil biodiversity we need to know how soil communities are assembled. However, the relationship between soil community assembly and environmental factors, and the linkages between soil microbiota taxonomic groups and their body sizes, remain unexplored in tropical seasonal rainforests. Systematic and stratified random sampling was used to collect 243 soil and organism samples across a 20‐ha plot in a tropical seasonal rainforest in southwestern China. High‐throughput sequencing, variation analysis and principal coordinates of neighbourhood matrices were performed. Soil community composition, spatial distribution and assembly processes based on propagule size (including archaea, bacteria, fungi and nematodes) were investigated. The results showed that: (i) the community assembly of small soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) was mostly influenced by stochastic processes while that of larger soil organisms (nematodes) was more deterministic; (ii) the independent effects of habitat (including soil and topographic variables) and its interaction with plant attributes for community structure significantly decreased with increasing body size; and (iii) plant leaf phosphorus directly influenced the spatial distribution of soil‐available phosphorus, which indicates their indirect impact on the assembly of the soil communities. Our data suggest that the assembly of multitrophic soil communities can be explained to some extent by changes in above‐ground plant attributes. Soil nutrients and their stoichiometry are important indicators of nutrient biogeochemical cycles and various ecological processes. Soil nutrients are heterogeneously distributed and can be influenced by plants through litterfall and root activity. To explore the associations between soil nutrients and relationships between soil nutrients and plant characteristics, we selected three canopy tree categories based on abundance as dominant, common, and rare, with different plant sizes based on DBH (diameter at breast height, cm) for each species from three 1 ha tropical forest sites (Bu-Beng, P55, and Na-Ban-He forests), and collected the topsoil (0–10 cm) for physiochemical analysis. The results showed that soil nutrient concentrations were significantly different among the three forest sites. For soil total C, N, and P associations, soil total C and N had significant associations at all three sites; however, the associations of soil total C-P and N-P varied among sites. The plant category had significant relationships with soil stoichiometry, whereas plant size had significant relationships with soil nutrient concentrations; these relationships varied among the three sites. The results indicate that soil nutrient heterogeneity is influenced by tree category and size. Future studies should include a larger sample size to further validate these results. Long‐term vegetation plots represent one of the largest types of research investments in ecology, but efforts to interrelate data on plants with that on animals are constrained because of the disturbance produced by human observers. Recent advances in the automated identification of animal sounds on large datasets of autonomously collected audio recordings hold the potential to describe plant–animal interactions, such as between frugivorous birds and fruiting trees, without such disturbance. We deployed an array of nine autonomous recording units (ARUs) on the 400 × 500 m Bubeng Forest Dynamics Plot, in Xishuangbanna, southwest China, and collected a total of 1965 h of recordings across two seasons. Animal Sound Identifier (ASI) software was used to detect the vocalizations of five frugivorous bird species, and the probability of detection was related to the number of mature fruiting trees within a 50 m radius of the ARUs. There were more significant positive relationships than would be expected by chance in analyses that investigated bird/tree interactions across 3 months, both in the wet season and the dry season, as well as in short‐term analyses within the dry season months of October and November. The analysis identified 54 interactions between bird and tree species with significant positive relationships. Follow‐up observations of birds on the plot validated that such interactions were more likely to be observed than other interactions. We demonstrate that ARUs and automated voice identification can map the distribution and/or movement of vocal animals across large vegetation plots, allowing this data on animals to be inter‐related to that on plants. We suggest that ARUs be added to the standardized protocols of the plot network, leveraging their vast amount of information about vegetation to describe plant–animal interactions currently, and monitor changes in the future.
