4. Studies of decision making under risk and uncertainty

Abstract

This dissertation experimentally examines how the decision-making under risk of individuals' is influenced by choice procedures, decision context, frames and exogenous information. The first study investigates a sequential procedure (to ease the choice overload problem) by presenting the products in sequential pages and requesting the decision-maker to select an item from each page, entering them into a wish list from which the final choice will be made. This study experimentally investigates how the final decision is affected by the number of items on each page and, hence, by the number of items in a wish list. The parameters of a stochastic model are estimated to 'explain' the data, in particular, examining the noisiness of the choices at each stage. The results show that procedure matters and that the trade-off between an increased number of options per page and an increased number of pages is indeed influential. The second study proposes an Asymmetric Risk Averse Quantal Response Equilibrium (QRE) extension of a cheap-talk model in lemon market. This extension better explains the observed deviations in Siegenthaler (2017)'s experiment from theoretical predictions. The third study experimentally investigates how the composition of choices and menus influences the decision-making in a two-stage context - one in which the decision-maker must first choose a menu from a set of menus, and secondly must choose an item from the chosen menu. Several choices of menu theories have been applied to identify how different types of decision-makers are influenced by different menu frames. The fourth study experimentally examine how social information, personal experience and professional suggestions interactively influence subjects' decisions under risk. This study found an important factor: information congruence between information sources significantly affects the evolution of the decisions in a group.

12. Semantically-Aligned Universal Tree-Structured Solver for Math Word Problems

Abstract

A practical automatic textual math word problems (MWPs) solver should be able to solve various textual MWPs while most existing works only focused on one-unknown linear MWPs. Herein, we propose a simple but efficient method called Universal Expression Tree (UET) to make the first attempt to represent the equations of various MWPs uniformly. Then a semantically-aligned universal tree-structured solver (SAU-Solver) based on an encoder-decoder framework is proposed to resolve multiple types of MWPs in a unified model, benefiting from our UET representation. Our SAU-Solver generates a universal expression tree explicitly by deciding which symbol to generate according to the generated symbols' semantic meanings like human solving MWPs. Besides, our SAU-Solver also includes a novel subtree-level semanticallyaligned regularization to further enforce the semantic constraints and rationality of the generated expression tree by aligning with the contextual information. Finally, to validate the universality of our solver and extend the research boundary of MWPs, we introduce a new challenging Hybrid Math Word Problems dataset (HMWP), consisting of three types of MWPs. 22. Research on the Separation Control Characteristics of Vortex Flap under Different Reynolds Numbers

Abstract

Inspired by birds raising their feathers to control the separation flow, vortex flap has become an approach to control the separation flow over airfoils at high angles of attack.In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristics and physical mechanism of vortex flap controlling separation flow over airfoils under different Reynolds number are numerically studied.The results show that vortex flap is able to greatly improve the lift of airfoil at low Reynolds number under high angle of attack.Its physical mechanism is that the vortex flap makes the core position of main separation vortex closer to the airfoil comparing to the original airfoil, and the vorticity of the vortex center position is also greatly improved so that the low-pressure characteristics caused by the vortex core will affect the flow field on the upper airfoil surface.In addition, the pressure filed on the upper surface of the airfoil is divided by vortex flap into two parts:the low pressure aera in the front and the high pressure aera at the back.However, under high Reynolds number(corresponding to conventional aircraft Reynolds number), the effect of vortex flap on improving the aerodynamic characteristics of airfoil at high angle of attack is far less effective compared to the case of low Reynolds number.This explains why birds can improve lift characteristics through feather lifting, while vortex flap can only be used as drag plates in conventional aircraft.

23. Cost-Effective Tunable Iontronic Pressure Sensors Based on a Performance Prediction Model

Abstract

The iontronic pressure sensor has broad prospects in smart wearable devices, health monitoring, and many other fields. However, it is challenging to evaluate sensor performance and tune the best configuration in a given application scenario because systematic regulation theory and performance prediction models are lacking. In this work, we construct a performance prediction model by combining Persson’s contact theory and the finite element analysis (FEA) method and realize the qualitative and quantitative predictions of the sensor’s performance within the selected pressure range. The optimized sensor based on sandpaper gains high sensitivity (97.5 kPa $^{-{1}}$ ), low detection limit (4.3 Pa), fast response and relaxation times (40/70 ms), wide linear sensing range (0–311.1 kPa), and mechanical stability of 10000 cycles. This cost-effective iontronic pressure sensor with fully adjustable performance can be further applied in daily health and sports monitoring. The performance prediction method has the possibility of further development in the theoretical prediction and performance analysis for a more complicated microstructure sensor. This work provides a new idea and strategy for realizing low-cost, large-scale manufacturing and applying pressure sensors.

Abstract

At present, the research on air launch technology at home and abroad focuses on the numerical simulation and aerodynamic characteristics in the process of rocket separation, while the research on the impact of air launch on the payload of launch vehicle is rarely involved. The influence of the initial state of air-launch on the payload of the launch vehicle is studied. By simplifying the model of the flight orbit, the mathematical model of the rocket flight is first established and then the influence of the launch height and the launch velocity on the payload of the rocket after entering the orbit is quantitatively analyzed. The results show that increasing the launch height can effectively increase the payload, but if the launch height is increased beyond 10 km, the increase in payload is not as significant as before. Increasing the launch velocity can significantly increase the payload, and the launch velocity is more significant for the payload increase. Therefore, considering the economics of air-launch, it is more appropriate to set an initial launch height of 10 km and to increase the initial launch speed as much as possible.

However, the impact of WSD on IBD development and its underlying mechanism remain unclear. Transcriptomics and metabolomics could be beneficial for identifying key factors in WSD-related experimental IBD susceptibility. However, no such study has been conducted yet. We aimed to analyze the implications of WSD for experimental colitis susceptibility in mice and its underlying mechanism using these high-throughput technologies.Methods: We fed experimental mice a WSD and a control diet from weaning. After 9 weeks, the mice were treated with 2,4,6 trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid to induce colitis, and the control group was treated with 50% ethanol (commonly used IBD animal model). Genome-wide microarray and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry were used to identify the differential transcripts and metabolites of experimental colitis with and without pre-illness WSD.Results: WSD induced more severe inflammation in experimental colitis than the control diet. We found 2540 up-regulated genes and 2737 down-regulated genes in experimental colitis with WSD compared with those for the control diet.
