CO2 released from subduction zones plays a vital role in the tectonic carbon cycle. However, the contribution of submarine backarc components to carbon emissions remains poorly understood compared to subaerial arc volcanos. This study utilized a combination of geochemical and hydrodynamic approaches to investigate the sources and flux of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the deep basin of the southwestern Okinawa Trough. Most deep‐water (depth ≥1,000 m) samples, even those retrieved from sites distant from active venting, exhibited mild geochemical anomalies of elevated 3He/4He ratios and higher DIC content than reference sites. Hydrodynamic observations using bottom‐mounted acoustic instruments in the deep basin revealed strong tidal currents and enhanced turbulent mixing. These findings suggest that active solute dispersal and mixing are responsible for the prevalence of mild geochemical anomalies in the basin. Mixing models indicated that hydrothermal vent fluids are the primary source of excess 3He and DIC above background levels in the deep basin, whereas both CO2 and mineral acid in hydrothermal fluids cause excess acidity. Based on hydrodynamic and geochemical data, a box model estimated a hydrothermal DIC flux of 0.62 ± 1.40 × 1010 mol y−1, equivalent to 40% of CO2 emissions from persistently degassing volcanos in the Ryukyu Arc. Our results suggest that submarine carbon emissions are quantitatively important in subduction systems with subaqueous backarc components. However, we know little about CO2 released from submarine backarc basins compared to volcanoes on land. This study examined dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) sources and quantities released into the deep basin of the southwestern Okinawa Trough. Even far from active hydrothermal vents, deep‐water samples had higher DIC levels than expected. Using instruments placed on the seabed, we discovered strong tidal currents and increased water mixing in the basin. These findings suggest that water movement and mixing contribute to the widespread occurrence of elevated DIC levels. Our calculations show that the primary source of the extra DIC in the deep basin is fluids released from hydrothermal vents, and both CO2 and mineral acid cause excess acidity in the water. Based on our data, we estimate that hydrothermal vents release approximately 6 billion moles of DIC per year, equivalent to 40% of the CO2 emissions from continuously active volcanoes in the Ryukyu Arc. These results demonstrate the potential significance of underwater carbon emissions in submerged backarc basins within subduction zones. The Gaoping Submarine Canyon (GPSC) off southwest Taiwan has been extensively studied due to its unique geology, its role in transferring terrestrial material to the deep sea, and its diverse biological communities. However, there is a lack of understanding of carbon cycling across the sediment–water interface in the canyon. This study aims to fill the gap by utilizing the field data collected between 2014 and 2020 and a linear inverse model (LIM) to reconstruct the benthic food web (i.e., carbon flows through different stocks) in the head of GPSC and the upper Gaoping slope (GS). The biotic and abiotic organic carbon (OC) stocks were significantly higher on the slope than in the canyon, except for the bacteria stock. The sediment oxygen utilization was similar between the two habitats, but the magnitude and distribution of the OC flow in the food web were distinctively different. Despite a significant input flux of ∼ 2020 mg C m -2 d -1 in the canyon, 84 % of the carbon flux exited the system, while 12 % was buried. On the slope, 84 % of the OC input (∼ 109 mg C m -2 d -1) was buried, and only 7 % exited the system. Bacteria processes play a major role in the carbon fluxes within the canyon. In contrast, the food web in the upper slope exhibited stronger interactions among metazoans, indicated by higher fluxes between meiofauna and macrofauna compartments. Network indices based on the LIM outputs showed that the canyon head had higher total system throughput (T..) and total system throughflow (TST), indicating greater energy flowing through the system. In contrast, the slope had a significantly higher Finn cycling index (FCI), average mutual information (AMI), and longer OC turnover time, suggesting a relatively more stable ecosystem with higher energy recycling. Due to sampling limitations, the present study only represents the benthic food web during the "dry" period. By integrating the field data into a food web model, this study provides valuable insight into the fates of OC cycling in an active submarine canyon, focusing on the often overlooked benthic communities. Future studies should include "wet" period sampling to reveal the effects of typhoons and monsoon rainfalls on OC cycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A more complete picture of life on Earth, and even life in the Earth, has recently become possible through the application of environmental genomics. We have obtained the complete genome sequence of a new genus of the Finnicutes, the uncultivated sulfate reducing bacterium Desulforudis audaxviator, by filtering fracture water from a borehole at 2.8 km depth in a South African gold mine. The DNA was sequenced using a combination of Sanger sequencing and 454 pyrosequencing, and asserrlbled into just one genome, indicating the planktonic community is extremely low in diversity. We analyzed the genome of D. audaxviator using the MicrobesOnline annotation pipeline and toolkit (http://www.microbesonline.org), which offers powerful resources for comparative genome analysis, including operon predictions and treebased comparative genome browsing. MicrobesOnline allowed us to compare the D. audaxviator genome with other sequenced members of the Firmicutes in the same clade (primarily Pelotomaculum thennoproprionicum, Desulfotomaculum reducens, Carboxydothennus hydrogenoformans, and Moorella thennoacetica), as well as other known sulfate reducers and thermophilic organisms. D. audaxviator gives a view to the set of tools necessary for what appears to be a self-contained, independent lifestyle deep in the Earth's crust. The genome is not very streamlined, and indicates a motile, endospore forming sulfate reducer with pili that can fix its own nitrogen and carbon. D. audaxviator is an obligate anaerobe, and lacks obvious homologs of many of the traditional 02 tolerance genes, consistent with the low concentration of O2 in the fracture water and its long-term isolation from the surface. D. audaxviator provides a complete genome representative of the Gram-positive bacteria to further our understanding of dissimilatory sulfate reducing bacteria and archaea. Additionally, study of the deep subsurface has offered access to the simplest community yet studied by environmental genomics, perhaps consisting of just a single species that is capable of performing all of the tasks necessary for life.

We report radiocarbon and stable carbon isotope measurements from vent gas (CO2(g)), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and particulate organic carbon (POC), from two vents of the Kueishantao (KST) shallow‐water hydrothermal system, offshore northeast Taiwan. The purpose of this research is to investigate how magmatic‐sourced carbon enters various carbon pools in the hydrothermal system. We utilize a precipitation method to eliminate sulfur compounds from CO2 samples to facilitate Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) analysis, and evaluate radiocarbon background levels during processing to characterize hydrothermal‐sourced CO2 that contains negligible radiocarbon. The result shows that both CO2(g) and DIC in the fluids below two vent orifices fall within a narrow range of fraction of modern carbon (F14C) from 0.013 to 0.136 and δ13C from −8.3‰ to −5.1‰. The F14C values correspond to approximately 90% magmatic‐sourced carbon in CO2(g) and DIC. A combination of equilibrium and kinetic isotopic fractionation can adequately explain relatively high CO2(g) δ13C to DIC, beneath vent orifices. Above the vent orifices, DIC becomes enriched in both 14C and 13C as a result of physical mixing with ambient seawater. POC F14C values confirm a significant magmatic carbon contribution into the POC pool within the KST system, with rapid hydrothermal circulation. Our results identify the physiochemical processes responsible for magmatic carbon migration from CO2(g) into the DIC pool, and demonstrate how a dual carbon isotope approach can serve as an effective tool in understanding carbon flow in high temperature‐low pH hydrothermal systems. Plain Language Summary: Kueishantao (KST) shallow water hydrothermal vents constantly discharge CO2‐dominated gases and acidic fluid into ambient seawater, of which all chemical properties are significantly affected. To track the footprint of CO2 emitted from the hydrothermal vents into the adjacent carbon reservoirs, we first measure radiocarbon in the vent CO2 and hydrothermal fluid. Radiocarbon is a good tracer for this purpose since magmatic‐sourced carbon is usually devoid of 14C. However, sulfur content is typically high in hydrothermal samples and makes radiocarbon measurements difficult. We tested three methods to remove the sulfur and found that precipitation is the most efficient method for hydrothermal samples. We show that in the KST system, more than 90% of the magmatic‐sourced carbon was retained in the vent CO2 and the acidic fluids beneath vent orifices. We also used simulations to show how hydrothermal vents take up the magmatic‐sourced carbon beneath vent orifices and then diffuse to the seawater above. How organisms living near KST hydrothermal vents take in the magmatic‐sourced carbon will be discussed in a future work.
