Abstract Background Cervical and upper thoracic esophageal cancer (ESCA) presents treatment challenges due to limited clinical evidence. This multi-center study (ChC&UES) explores radical radio(chemo)therapy efficacy and safety, especially focusing on radiation dose. Method We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 1,422 cases across 8 medical centers. According to the radiation dose for primary gross tumor, patients were divided into standard dose radiotherapy (SD, 50–55 Gy) or high dose (HD, > 55 Gy) radiotherapy. HD was further subdivided into conventional- high-dose group (HD-conventional, 55–63 Gy) and ultra-high-dose group (HD-ultra, ≥ 63 Gy). Primary outcome was Overall Survival (OS). Results The median OS was 33.0 months (95% CI: 29.401–36.521) in the whole cohort. Compared with SD, HD shown significant improved survival in cervical ESCA in Kaplan-Meier (P = 0.029) and cox multivariate regression analysis (P = 0.024) while shown comparable survival in upper thoracic ESCA (P = 0.735). No significant difference existed between HD-conventional and HD-ultra in cervical (P = 0.976) and upper thoracic (P = 0.610) ESCA. Incidences of radiation esophagitis and pneumonia from HD were comparable to SD (P = 0.097, 0.240), while myosuppression risk was higher(P = 0.039). This research presents the lived experience of left-behind children living in Shaanxi province of China through the lens of resilience theory. A hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry is employed to identify inner and outer risk factors faced by left-behind children at the primary school level and explore their protective factors (internal assets and external resources). This study attempts to determine how these protective factors can moderate or reduce the repercussions of risk exposure on the children's development. Unstructured observations, including on-site observations of the classroom, life, and interpersonal relationships, were conducted in 2018 and remote classroom observations were completed in 2020 due to the pandemic. There were 51 students (including 28 left-behind children) observed in total. Fourteen 9- to 13-year-old left-behind children, eight guardians, and six teachers participated in interviews. Remote pre-interview activities were specifically employed in 2020. The findings indicate this group's internalized and externalized problems, and the internal assets and external resources. This study would potentially identify viable targets for interventions and socially inclusive education. Resilience-based interventions in policies and practices are recommended to intervene in the trajectory from risk exposure to associated negative effects.

Abstract Background Canine enteric coronavirus (CECoV) is a prevalent infectious disease among dogs worldwide, yet its epidemiology in mainland China remains poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the prevalence of CECoV in mainland China and identify factors influencing its prevalence. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases for studies regarding CECoV epidemiology of China. PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and CQVIP were searched to obtain the studies. Eligible studies were selected based on predefined criteria, and data were extracted and synthesized. The quality the studies was assessed using the JBI assessment tool. Heterogeneity was checked using I2 test statistics followed by subgroup and sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore variations in CECoV prevalence by factors such as year, region, season, health status, social housing type, gender, age, and breed. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and eggers test that was followed by trim and fill analysis. Results A total of 27 studies involving 21,034 samples were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of CECoV in mainland China was estimated to be 0.30 (95% CI 0.24–0.37), indicating persistent circulation of the virus. Subgroup analyses revealed higher prevalence rates in younger dogs, multi-dog households, apparently healthy dogs, and certain regions such as southwest China. Seasonal variations were observed, with lower prevalence rates in summer. However, no significant differences in prevalence were found by gender. Conclusions This study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of CECoV in mainland China, highlighting the persistent circulation of the virus and identifying factors associated with higher prevalence rates. Continuous monitoring and surveillance efforts, along with research into accurate detection methods and preventive measures, are essential for the effective control of CECoV and mitigation of its potential impact on animal and human health.

Reconstituted tobacco (RT) has the advantages of low density, high filling value and low tar release, which can significantly reduce production consumption and control the release of tar and harmful components in cigarette smoke. However, some tobacco components will be lost during the processing of RT, while some non-tobacco components (such as pulp, etc.) will be introduced, which makes the sensory quality of RT different from that of natural tobacco (NT) cigarettes, that is, RT will produce an irritating odor when smoking, which directly affects the proportion of their doping in the preparation of cigarettes. In order to explore the key chemical components of irritating odor in the smoke of RT, elemental analysis (EA) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used to characterize NT, RT, and substrates to analyze the chemical composition differences of the three raw materials. Then, an U-shaped fixed-bed reactor (UFBR) was used to conduct pyrolysis experiments on the three raw materials. The volatile products generated by pyrolysis were detected in real-time by a single photoionization mass spectrometry (SPI-MS), which was connected to the outlet of UFBR. Besides, the condensed liquid products were also characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to provide the supplementary informations on chemical structures of detected compounds. In addition, the principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain the variance in SPI mass spectra and to distinguish the characteristic pyrolytic products of the three raw materials. Finally, the products with significant differences in concentration in the raw materials were identified as model compounds for sensory evaluation. The results showed that the key chemical components of irritating odor in RT smoke mainly contain cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and 4-ethylphenol. Furthermore, the temperature range for the release of various model compounds during the pyrolysis process were determined based on the temperature-evolved profiles. This work provides a foundamental data and clues for future research on reducing the generation of irritating odors in RT.

ABSTRACTLinking identified MPOX cases to care is essential for MPOX control. This study aims to investigate the intentions of healthcare seeking and self-isolation for MPOX among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in early August 2023 in China. Respondents were recruited by community-based organizations (CBOs), collecting information on demographics, health status, behavioural and psychological characteristics. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the predictors of intentions to seek healthcare and self-isolate for MPOX within the MSM population. A total of 7725 participants were recruited, with a median age of 30 years. 92.21% of the participants would seek healthcare for MPOX-like symptoms, but only 52.50% intended to self-isolate if diagnosed. Intentions to seek healthcare were lower among those with MPOX-like symptoms in the past 3 months (standardized prevalence ratio (SPRs) = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74–0.89) and the willingness to self-isolate was reduced among those diagnosed with MPOX in the past 3 months (SPRs = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.48–0.87). Participants free of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and those aware of their HIV status were more likely to seek healthcare and self-isolate than those with STIs or unaware of their HIV status. Regular followers of MPOX information and those perceiving a low risk of infection were more inclined to take preventive measures. These findings highlight the need for targeted MPOX prevention strategies for high-risk groups and the importance of addressing barriers in infectious disease prevention response.

Objective To evaluate clinical efficacy of chiropractic combined with core muscle strength training in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain. Methods One hundred and twenty patients with chronic non-specific low back pain were randomly divided into chiropractic group （n = 40），combined group （n=39） and conventional group （n=41）. Patients in each group were treated with short wave and ultrasound. Chiropractic therapy was added in chiropractic group，and chiropractic combined with core muscle strength training was supplemented in combined group. The changes of numerical rating scale （NRS） score，Oswestry disability index （ODI），Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire （RMDQ） of low back pain and temperature difference between two sides of spinous process before and after corresponding treatment were compared among three groups. Results After treatment，NRS score，ODI index，RMDQ evaluation of low back pain and temperature difference in combined group were improved up to 2.06±0.63，13.00±3.53 and 6.25±1.20，significantly better than 2.44±0.84，17.11±4.41 and 9.42±2.49 in chiropractic group，4.03±0.82，21.31±5.68 and 11.09±2.78 in conventional group，and the differences were statistically significant （all P<0.05）. Conclusion On the basis of routine treatment，chiropractic combined with core muscle strength training can mitigate relevant symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients with chronic non-specific low back pain，which can be further promoted and applied in clinical treatment.

BackgroundThe HIV infection status among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China is a cause for concern. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) serves as a highly effective biomedical preventive measure against HIV infection. Substantial evidence has established an association between PEP utilization and risk behaviors among MSM, but whether the utilization of PEP has an impact on risk behaviors remains unknown. This study sought to elucidate the impact of PEP usage on risk behaviors among MSM and provide recommendations for developing targeted HIV prevention programs.MethodsA cohort study was conducted in Qingdao, China, from April 2021 to January 2022. Participants were enlisted by volunteers from community-based organizations through a snowball sampling method. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect sociodemographic and behavioral information of participants. The study encompassed a retrospective investigation, baseline survey, and follow-up survey, representing periods before, during, and after PEP usage, respectively. Generalized estimating equations, fitting a Poisson regression model, were applied to scrutinize changes in risk behaviors of MSM during and after PEP usage, in comparison to before PEP usage.ResultsA total of 341 MSM were recruited in the cohort study, with 179 individuals completing the follow-up survey. In comparison to before PEP usage, there was a significant increase in the proportion of Rush Popper usage (17.6% vs. 23.8% vs. 29.6%) and commercial sexual partners (10.9% vs. 17.6% vs. 21.8%) among MSM during and after PEP usage. Before PEP usage, 88.7% of MSM reported having ≥3 temporary sexual partners in the last 6 months. This proportion exhibited no significant change during PEP usage (91.8%), but it significantly increased to 97.8% after PEP usage (P < 0.05). Notably, there was a significant decrease in group sex during and after PEP usage compared to before PEP usage (30.8% vs. 21.4% vs. 21.2%).ConclusionThe utilization of PEP may impact risk behaviors among MSM, potentially leading to increased Rush Popper usage, temporary sexual partners, and commercial sexual partners after PEP usage, accompanied by a decrease in group sex. Further research is imperative to elucidate the impact of PEP utilization on MSM and develop targeted HIV prevention programs.

Abstract Scanning probe lithography (SPL) is a promising technology to fabricate high-resolution, customized and cost-effective features at the nanoscale. However, the quality of nano-fabrication, particularly the critical dimension, is significantly influenced by various SPL fabrication techniques and their corresponding process parameters. Meanwhile, the identification and measurement of nano-fabrication features are very time-consuming and subjective. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel framework for process parameter optimization and feature segmentation of SPL via machine learning (ML). Different from traditional SPL techniques that rely on manual labeling-based experimental methods, the proposed framework intelligently extracts reliable and global information for statistical analysis to fine-tune and optimize process parameters. Based on the proposed framework, we realized the processing of smaller critical dimensions through the optimization of process parameters, and performed direct-write nano-lithography on a large scale. Furthermore, data-driven feature extraction and analysis could potentially provide guidance for other characterization methods and fabrication quality optimization.

The fermentation process has a significant impact on the aromatic profile of wines, particularly in relation to the difference in fermentation matrix caused by grape varieties. This study investigates the leaching and evolution patterns of aroma compounds in Vitis vinifera L. Marselan and Merlot during an industrial-scale vinification process, including the stages of cold soak, alcohol fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and one-year bottle storage. The emphasis is on the differences between the two varieties. The results indicated that most alcohols were rapidly leached during the cold soak stage. Certain C6 alcohols, terpenes, and norisoprenoids showed faster leaching rates in ‘Marselan’, compared to ‘Merlot’. Some branched chain fatty-acid esters, such as ethyl 3-methylbutyrate, ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, and ethyl lactate, consistently increased during the fermentation and bottling stages, with faster accumulation observed in ‘Marselan’. The study combines the Orthogonal Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) model based on odor activity values to elucidate the accumulation of these ethyl esters during bottle storage, compensating for the reduction in fruity aroma resulting from decreased levels of (E)-β-damascenone. The ‘Marselan’ wine exhibited a more pronounced floral aroma due to its higher level of linalool, compared to the ‘Merlot’ wine. The study unveils the distinctive variation patterns of aroma compounds from grapes to wine across grape varieties. This provides a theoretical framework for the precise regulation of wine aroma and flavor, and holds significant production value.
