Abstract

Vehicle environmental awareness is a crucial issue in improving road safety. Through a variety of sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication, vehicles can collect a wealth of data. However, to make these data useful, sensor data must be integrated effectively. This paper focuses on the integration of image data and vehicle-to-vehicle communication data. More specifically, our goal is to identify the locations of vehicles sending messages within images, a challenge termed the vehicle identification problem. In this paper, we employ a supervised learning model to tackle the vehicle identification problem. However, we face two practical issues: first, drivers are typically unwilling to share privacy-sensitive image data, and second, drivers usually do not engage in data labeling. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a comprehensive solution to the vehicle identification problem, which leverages federated learning and automatic labeling techniques in combination with the aforementioned supervised learning model. We have validated the feasibility of our proposed approach through experiments.

3. Thymic macrophages consist of two populations with distinct localization and origin.

Abstract

Tissue-resident macrophages are essential to protect from pathogen invasion and maintain organ homeostasis. The ability of thymic macrophages to engulf apoptotic thymocytes is well appreciated, but little is known about their ontogeny, maintenance, and diversity. Here, we characterized the surface phenotype and transcriptional profile of these cells and defined their expression signature. Thymic macrophages were most closely related to spleen red pulp macrophages and Kupffer cells and shared the expression of the transcription factor (TF) SpiC with these cells. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) showed that the macrophages in the adult thymus are composed of two populations distinguished by the expression of Timd4 and Cx3cr1. Remarkably, Timd4+ cells were located in the cortex, while Cx3cr1+ macrophages were restricted to the medulla and the cortico-medullary junction. Using shield chimeras, transplantation of embryonic thymuses, and genetic fate mapping, we found that the two populations have distinct origins. Timd4+ thymic macrophages are of embryonic origin, while Cx3cr1+ macrophages are derived from adult hematopoietic stem cells. Aging has a profound effect on the macrophages in the thymus. Timd4+ cells underwent gradual attrition, while Cx3cr1+ cells slowly accumulated with age and, in older mice, were the dominant macrophage population in the thymus. Altogether, our work defines the phenotype, origin, and diversity of thymic macrophages.

Abstract

Quantum oscillations in resistivity and magnetization at high magnetic fields are a macroscopic fingerprint of the energy quantization due to the cyclotron motion of quasiparticles. In a thin Weyl semimetal, a unique thickness dependent Weyl-orbit quantum oscillation was proposed to exist, originating from a nonlocal cyclotron orbit via the electron tunneling between the top and bottom Fermi-arc surface states. Here, untwinned and high crystalline Weyl metal SrRuO$_3$ thin films with different thicknesses were grown on miscut SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates. Magneto-transport measurements were carried out in magnetic fields up to 35 T, and quantum oscillations with different frequencies were observed and compared to the calculated band structure. In particular, we discovered a frequency $F \approx$ 30 T at low temperatures and above 3 T that corresponds to a small Fermi pocket with a light effective mass. Its oscillation amplitude appears to be at maximum for film thicknesses in a range of 10 to 20 nm, and the phase of the oscillation exhibits a systematic change with the film thickness. After isolating the well separated frequencies, the constructed Landau fan diagram shows an unusual concave downward curvature in the 1/$\mu_0H_n$-$n$ curve, where $n$ is the Landau level index. Based on the rigorous analysis of the thickness and field-orientation dependence of the quantum oscillations, the oscillation with $F \approx$ 30 T is attributed to be of surface origin, which is related to the Fermi-arc surface state originating from non-overlapping Weyl nodes projected on the film's surface plane. 10. Dust abundance and grain size in galaxy halos

Abstract

We investigate the abundance and properties (especially, grain size) of dust in galaxy halos using available observational data in the literature. There are two major sets of data. One is (i) the reddening curves at redshifts $z\sim 1$ and 2 derived for Mg II absorbers, which are assumed to trace the medium in galaxy halos. The other is (ii) the cosmic extinction up to $z\sim 2$ mainly traced by distant background quasars. For (i), the observed reddening curves favor a grain radius of $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m for silicate, while graphite is not supported because of its strong 2175 \AA\ bump. Using amorphous carbon improves the fit to the reddening curves compared with graphite if the grain radius is $a\lesssim 0.03~\mu$m. For (ii), the cosmic extinction requires $\eta\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ ($\eta$ is the ratio of the halo dust mass to the stellar mass; the observationally suggested value is $\eta\sim 10^{-3}$) for silicate if $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m as suggested by the reddening curve constraint. Thus, for silicate, we do not find any grain radius that satisfies both (i) and (ii) unless the halo dust abundance is much larger than suggested by the observations. For amorphous carbon, in contrast, a wide range of grain radius ($a\sim 0.01$--0.3~$\mu$m) is accepted by the cosmic extinction; thus, we find that a grain radius range of $a\sim 0.01$--0.03 $\mu$m is supported by combining (i) and (ii). 15. Students' Intention to Use a 3D E-Learning Platform in Traditional Chinese Medicine Education

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate a 3D (Three Dimensional) Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) e-learning platform and determine the factors affecting students' intention to continue to use the platform in TCM courses. Students from two classes were invited to participate in the experiment. To compare the effectiveness of both learning methods, one class serves as the control group and used the traditional classroom lecture method while the other serves as the experimental group using the 3D e-learning platform. To determine the factors affecting TCM students' intention to continue to use the platform, we propose an evaluation model modified from the post-acceptance model of information systems. Data collected from the experimental group students are used to test the proposed research model via the PLS-SEM method. We find that TCM students using the 3D e-learning platform outperformed those who used the traditional classroom lecture method. Meanwhile, the integrated evaluation model is found to provide reasonable explanatory power regarding TCM students' intention to continue to use the e-learning platform.

Abstract

Root‐knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are plant parasites causing annual economic losses amounting to several billion US dollars worldwide. One of the most aggressive species is M. enterolobii, a growing threat to agriculture due to its broad host range and ability to overcome many known resistance genes. Mungbean, a nutritionally and economically valuable crop, is particularly vulnerable to nematodes and pathogens. However, research focusing on mungbean resistance to M. enterolobii is scarce, and the corresponding defense mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we screened mungbean accessions and identified an accession strongly resistant to M. enterolobii. Transcriptome analysis revealed 2730 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in this resistant accession (CPI106939) compared to 1777 in the susceptible accession (Crystal) 7 days after nematode inoculation. The gene ontology (GO) upregulated in CPI106939 with functions related to plant‐pathogen interactions, plant hormone signaling, oxidative stress, and plant immunity. Plant defense‐related genes (WRKY, PAL, MAPK, POD and PR) were also significantly induced in CPI106939. Metabolome analysis showed that four secondary metabolites related to phenylpropanoid metabolism and lignification were significantly enriched in CPI106939. The induced immune response and secondary metabolites may underpin the enhanced resistance to M. enterolobii, providing insight into the resistance mechanisms in accession CPI106939 as well as candidate genes controlling the interaction between mungbean and its nematode parasite. Our study therefore provides foundations for the breeding of new varieties with intrinsic M. enterolobii resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. AoI-Aware Interference Mitigation for Task-Oriented Multicasting in Multi-Cell NOMA Networks

Abstract

Age of Information (AoI) is a critical performance metric for measuring information freshness in task-oriented Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In this work, we investigate how AoI impacts task-oriented multicasting in multi-cell Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) networks, while considering the effects of inter-cell interference and multicast group size. Our findings reveal that larger group sizes lead to increased instability in AoI, but lower inter-cell interference; while smaller group sizes result in higher inter-cell interference but a smaller increase in AoI when transmission fails. To balance inter-cell interference and group size, we propose a novel AoI-aware inter-cell interference mitigation (AIM) solution, which dynamically adjusts multicast group size, schedules multicast groups for transmission, and allocates transmit power to multicast groups. We derive the optimality for achieving the lowest AoI of the AIM scheduling strategy and the upper bound of the number of scheduling groups. Our simulation results show that AIM ensures more successful transmissions and low weighted sum AoI through grouping and AoI-aware inter-cell interference mitigation. We also show that our AoI-aware grouping scheme outperforms random grouping and fixed grouping, as well as evolutionary-based genetic algorithm grouping, by modeling the grouping problem as a multi-armed bandit problem and solving it using the $\epsilon $ -greedy method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the AoI problem of task-oriented IoT applications in multi-cell multicast NOMA networks.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: As gene-targeted therapies are increasingly being developed for Parkinson's disease (PD), identifying and characterizing carriers of specific genetic pathogenic variants is imperative. Only a small fraction of the estimated number of subjects with monogenic PD worldwide are currently represented in the literature and availability of clinical data and clinical trial-ready cohorts is limited. OBJECTIVE: The objectives are to (1) establish an international cohort of affected and unaffected individuals with PD-linked variants; (2) provide harmonized and quality-controlled clinical characterization data for each included individual; and (3) further promote collaboration of researchers in the field of monogenic PD. METHODS: We conducted a worldwide, systematic online survey to collect individual-level data on individuals with PD-linked variants in SNCA, LRRK2, VPS35, PRKN, PINK1, DJ-1, as well as selected pathogenic and risk variants in GBA and corresponding demographic, clinical, and genetic data. All registered cases underwent thorough quality checks, and pathogenicity scoring of the variants and genotype-phenotype relationships were analyzed. RESULTS: We collected 3888 variant carriers for our analyses, reported by 92 centers (42 countries) worldwide. Of the included individuals, 3185 had a diagnosis of PD (ie, 1306 LRRK2, 115 SNCA, 23 VPS35, 429 PRKN, 75 PINK1, 13 DJ-1, and 1224 GBA) and 703 were unaffected (ie, 328 LRRK2, 32 SNCA, 3 VPS35, 1 PRKN, 1 PINK1, and 338 GBA). In total, we identified 269 different pathogenic variants; 1322 individuals in our cohort (34%) were indicated as not previously published. Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disorder, currently affecting ~7 million people worldwide. PD is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, with at least 10% of all cases explained by a monogenic cause or strong genetic risk factor. However, the vast majority of our present data on monogenic PD is based on the investigation of patients of European White ancestry, leaving a large knowledge gap on monogenic PD in underrepresented populations. Gene-targeted therapies are being developed at a fast pace and have started entering clinical trials. In light of these developments, building a global network of centers working on monogenic PD, fostering collaborative research, and establishing a clinical trial-ready cohort is imperative. Based on a systematic review of the English literature on monogenic PD and a successful team science approach, we have built up a network of 59 sites worldwide and have collected information on the availability of data, biomaterials, and facilities. To enable access to this resource and to foster collaboration across centers, as well as between academia and industry, we have developed an interactive map and online tool allowing for a quick overview of available resources, along with an option to filter for specific items of interest. This initiative is currently being merged with the Global Parkinson's Genetics Program (GP2), which will attract additional centers with a focus on underrepresented sites. This growing resource and tool will facilitate collaborative research and impact the development and testing of new therapies for monogenic and potentially for idiopathic PD patients.
