Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) detector has been designed to address the full scope of the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC) physics program as presented by the National Academy of Science and provide a deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter. To accomplish this, the ECCE detector offers nearly acceptance and energy coverage along with excellent tracking and particle identification. The ECCE detector was designed to be built within the budget envelope set out by the EIC project while simultaneously managing cost and schedule risks. This detector concept has been selected to be the basis for the EIC project detector., Comment: 34 pages, 30 figures, 9 tables

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark-gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detecter system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirmed the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, a few insights on the potential 2nd Interaction Region can (IR) were also documented which could serve as a guidepost for the future development of a second EIC detector.

We performed feasibility studies for various measurements that are related to unpolarized TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. The processes studied include semi-inclusive Deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The single hadron cross sections and multiplicities were extracted as a function of the DIS variables $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton and $P_T$, which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to accumulated luminosities of 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to be submitted in joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, to be submitted to joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

The ECCE detector has been recommended as the selected reference detector for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). A series of simulation studies have been carried out to validate the physics feasibility of the ECCE detector. In this paper, detailed studies of heavy flavor hadron and jet reconstruction and physics projections with the ECCE detector performance and different magnet options will be presented. The ECCE detector has enabled precise EIC heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements with a broad kinematic coverage. These proposed heavy flavor measurements will help systematically study the hadronization process in vacuum and nuclear medium especially in the underexplored kinematic region., Comment: Open heavy flavor studies with the EIC reference detector design by the ECCE consortium. 11 pages, 11 figures, to be submitted to the Nuclear Instruments and Methods A

Nuclear Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/$\psi$ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The recently approved Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide a unique new opportunity for searches of charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) and other new physics scenarios. In contrast to the $e \leftrightarrow \mu$ CLFV transition for which very stringent limits exist, there is still a relatively large discovery space for the $e \to \tau$ CLFV transition, potentially to be explored by the EIC. With the latest detector design of ECCE (EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment) and projected integral luminosity of the EIC, we find the $\tau$-leptons created in the DIS process $ep\to \tau X$ are expected to be identified with high efficiency. A first ECCE simulation study, restricted to the 3-prong $\tau$-decay mode and with limited statistics for the Standard Model backgrounds, estimates that the EIC will be able to improve the current exclusion limit on $e\to \tau$ CLFV by an order of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to NIM

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 2 appendices, 3 tables

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is the next generation of precision QCD facility to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. There are a significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described.

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Here we propose a linear microbolometric array based on VOx thin films. The linear microbolometric array is fabricated by using micromachining technology, and its thermo-sensitive VOx thin film has excellent infrared response spectrum and TCR characteristics. Nano-scale VOx thin films deposited on SiO2/Si substrates were obtained by e-beam vapor deposition. The VOx films were then annealed at temperatures between 300 to 500 C with various deposition duration time. The crystal structures and microstructures were examined by XRD, SEM and ESCA. These films showed a predominant phase of rhombohedral VO2 and the crystallinity of the VO2 increased as the annealing temperature increased. Integrated with CMOS circuit, an experimentally prototypical monolithic linear microbolometric array is designed and fabricated. The testing results of the experimental linear array show that the responsivity of linear array can approach 18KV/W and is potential for infrared image systems., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1604.07938

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of single crystals and aligned powders of URu2Si2 under pressure in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. We find that the Knight shift decreases with applied pressure, consistent with previous measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility. Previous measurements of the spin lattice relaxation time revealed a partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K. This suppression persists under pressure, and the onset temperature is mildly enhanced.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We present evidence for nuclear spin-lattice relaxation driven by glassy nematic fluctuations in isovalent P-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. Both the $^{75}$As and $^{31}$P sites exhibit stretched-exponential relaxation similar to the electron-doped systems. By comparing the hyperfine fields and the relaxation rates at these sites we find that the As relaxation cannot be explained solely in terms of magnetic spin fluctuations. We demonstrate that nematic fluctuations couple to the As nuclear quadrupolar moment and can explain the excess relaxation. These results suggest that glassy nematic dynamics are a universal phenomenon in the iron-based superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report detailed Knight shift measurements of the two indium sites in the heavy fermion compound CeIrIn$_5$ as a function of temperature and field orientation. We find that the Knight shift anomaly is orientation-dependent, with a crossover temperature $T^*$ that varies by 50% as the field is rotated from (001) to (100). This result suggests that the hybridization between the Ce 4f states and the itinerant conduction electrons is anisotropic, a result that reflects its collective origin, and may lead to anisotropic Kondo liquid behavior and unconventional superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data for both the In(1) and In(2) sites in the heavy fermion material CeRhIn$_5$ under hydrostatic pressure. The Knight shift data reveal a suppression of the hyperfine coupling to the In(1) site as a function of pressure, and the electric field gradient, $\nu_{\alpha\alpha}$, at the In(2) site exhibits a change of slope, $d\nu_{\alpha\alpha}/dP$, at $P_{c1} = 1.75$ GPa. These changes to these coupling constants reflect alterations to the electronic structure at the quantum critical point., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We report $^{29}$Si NMR measurements in single crystals and aligned powders of URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. The spin-lattice-relaxation data reveal evidence of pseudospin fluctuations of U moments in the paramagnetic phase. We find evidence for partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K, and analyze the data in terms of a two component spin-fermion model. We propose that this behavior is a realization of a pseudogap between the hidden order transition $T_{HO}$ and 30 K. This behavior is then compared to other materials that demonstrate precursor fluctuations in a pseudogap regime above a ground state with long-range order., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present 75As nuclear magnetic resonance data from measurements of a series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ crystals with $0.00 \leq x \leq 0.075$ that reveals the coexistence of frozen antiferromagnetic domains and superconductivity for $0.060 \leq x \leq 0.071$. Although bulk probes reveal no long range antiferromagnetic order beyond $x = 0.06$, we find that the local spin dynamics reveal no qualitative change across this transition. The characteristic domain sizes vary by more than an order of magnitude, reaching a maximum variation at $x = 0.06$. This inhomogeneous glassy dynamics may be an intrinsic response to the competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in this system., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Phys. We present magnetotransport and Bi-209 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data on a series of single crystals of Bi2Se3, Bi2Te2Se and Cu_xBi2Se3 with varying carrier concentrations. The Knight shift of the bulk nuclei is strongly correlated with the carrier concentration via a hyperfine coupling of 27 ueV, which may have important consequences for scattering of the protected surface states. Surprisingly we find that the NMR linewidths and the spin lattice relaxation rate appear to be dominated by the presence of localized spins, which may be related to the presence of Se vacancies., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures; to appear in Phys. - Abstract
This study proposed a computerized inquiry-stage-dependent argumentation assistance and investigated whether this can help improve elementary students' performance in science processes and the construction of quality arguments. Various argumentation assistances were developed and incorporated into each stage of scientific inquiry in a computer-supported scientific inquiry system. A nonequivalent quasi-experimental design was adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach. Two intact sixth grade classes (N = 55) participated in this study, and each student used a tablet computer to accomplish the designated inquiry activities. One class of students was arranged to use the stage-dependent argumentation assistance, and the other used a generic text-based interface. The findings indicate that students who used the stage-dependent argumentation assistance could acquire significantly better science process and argument construction skills than those using the generic text-based interface.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The heavy electron Kondo liquid is an emergent state of condensed matter that displays universal behavior independent of material details. Properties of the heavy electron liquid are best probed by NMR Knight shift measurements, which provide a direct measure of the behavior of the heavy electron liquid that emerges below the Kondo lattice coherence temperature as the lattice of local moments hybridizes with the background conduction electrons. Because the transfer of spectral weight between the localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom is gradual, the Kondo liquid typically coexists with the local moment component until the material orders at low temperatures. The two-fluid formula captures this behavior in a broad range of materials in the paramagnetic state. In order to investigate two-fluid behavior and the onset and physical origin of different long range ordered ground states in heavy electron materials, we have extended Knight shift measurements to URu$_2$Si$_2$, CeIrIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$. In CeRhIn$_5$ we find that the antiferromagnetic order is preceded by a relocalization of the Kondo liquid, providing independent evidence for a local moment origin of antiferromagnetism. In URu$_2$Si$_2$ the hidden order is shown to emerge directly from the Kondo liquid and so is not associated with local moment physics. Our results imply that the nature of the ground state is strongly coupled with the hybridization in the Kondo lattice in agreement with phase diagram proposed by Yang and Pines., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures
