It is well-known that the interaction between passivated nanoparticles can be tuned by their complete immersion in a chosen solvent, such as water. What remains unclear on a molecular level is how nanoparticle interactions may be altered in the presence of solvent vapor where complete immersion is not achieved. In this paper, we report an all-atom molecular dynamics simulation study of the change in pair potential of mean force between dodecane thiol ligated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) when exposed to water vapor. With the equilibrium vapor pressure of water at 25 \degree C, there is very rapid condensation of water molecules onto the surface of the AuNPs in the form of mobile clusters of 100-2000 molecules that eventually coalesce into a few large clusters. When the distance between two AuNPs decreases, a water cluster bridging them provides an adhesive force that increases the depth and alters the shape of the pair-potential of mean force. That change of shape includes a decreased curvature near the minimum, consistent with experimental data showing that cyclic exposure to water vapor and its removal reversibly decreases and increases the Young's modulus of a freely suspended self-assembled monolayer of these AuNPs., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures. We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of the properties of a pseudo-atom model of dodecane thiol ligated 5-nm diameter gold nanoparticles (AuNP) in vacuum as a function of ligand coverage and particle separation in three state of aggregation: the isolated AuNP, an isolated pair of AuNPs and a square assembly of AuNPs. Our calculations show that for all values of the coverage the ligand density along a radius emanating from the core of an isolated AuNP oscillates along the chain up to the fourth pseudo-atom, then smoothly decays to zero. We examine the ligand envelope as a function of the coverage and demonstrate that the deformation of that envelope generated by interaction between the NPs is coverage-dependent, so that the shape, depth and position of the minimum of the potential of mean force displays a systematic dependence on the coverage. We propose an accurate analytical description of the calculated potential of mean force with parameters that scale linearly with the ligand coverage. We define and calculate an effective pair potential of mean force for a square configuration of particles; our definition contains, implicitly, both the three- and four-particle contributions to deviation from additivity. We find that the effective pair potential of mean force in this configuration has a different minimum and a different well depth than the isolated pair potential of mean force. Previous work has found that the three-particle contribution to deviation from additivity is monotone repulsive, whereas we find that the combined three- and four-particle contributions have an attractive well, implying that the three- and four-particle contributions are of comparable magnitude but opposite sign, thereby suggesting that even higher order correction terms likely play a significant role in the behavior of assemblies of many nanoparticles., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures

We report the structure of transient fluctuations in the liquid phase of a two-dimensional system that exhibits several ordered phases with different symmetries. The density-temperature phase diagram of the system studied, composed of particles with a repulsive shouldered soft-core pair interaction, has regions with stable liquid and hexatic phases, a square solid phase, two separate hexagonal solid phases and a quasi-crystalline phase with 12-fold symmetry. The structure of a fluctuation was determined by computing the same-time aperture cross correlation function of particle configurations. Along a low-temperature isotherm that intersects all the ordered phases we find that the liquid phase exhibits structured fluctuation with hexagonal symmetry near both liquid-hexatic transition lines. Along the same isotherm and in the stable liquid between the lower density hexatic-to-liquid and the higher density liquid-to-square solid transitions, we find that transient hexagonal ordered fluctuations dominate the liquid region near the hexatic-to-liquid transition and square ordered fluctuations dominate the liquid region near the liquid-to square solid transition, but that both structured fluctuations occur at all densities between these transition lines. At a higher temperature, at phase points in the liquid above but close to the density maximum of an underlying transition, there are ordered fluctuations that can be correlated with the structure of the lower temperature phase., Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures

Experimental studies of the variation of the mean square displacement (MSD) of a particle in a confined colloid suspension that exhibits density variations on the scale length of the particle diameter are not in agreement with the prediction that the spatial variation in MSD should mimic the spatial variation in density. The predicted behavior is derived from the expectation that the MSD of a particle depends on the system density and the assumption that the force acting on a particle is a point function of position. The experimental data come from studies of the MSDs of particles in narrow ribbon channels and between narrowly spaced parallel plates, and from new data, reported herein, of the radial and azimuthal MSDs of a colloid particle in a dense colloid suspension confined to a small circular cavity. In each of these geometries a dense colloid suspension exhibits pronounced density oscillations with spacing of a particle diameter. We remove the discrepancy between prediction and experiment using the Fisher-Methfessel interpretation of how local equilibrium in an inhomogeneous system is maintained to argue that the force acting on a particle is delocalized over a volume with radius equal to a particle diameter. Our interpretation has relevance to the relationship between the scale of inhomogeneity and the utility of translation of the particle MSD into a position dependent diffusion coefficient, and to the use of a spatially dependent diffusion coefficient to describe mass transport in a heterogeneous system., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Anion exchange at positively charged interfaces plays an important role in a variety of physical and chemical processes. However, the molecular scale details of these processes, especially with heavy and large anionic complexes, are not well-understood. We studied the adsorption of $PtCl_6^{2-}$ anionic complexes to floating DPTAP monolayers in the presence of excess $Cl^-$ as a function of the bulk chlorometalate concentration. In situ x-ray scattering and fluorescence measurements, which are element and depth sensitive, show that the chlorometalate ions only adsorb in the diffuse layer at lower concentrations, while they adsorb predominantly in the Stern layer at higher concentrations. The response of DPTAP molecules to the adsorbed ions is determined independently by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, and supports this picture. Molecular dynamics simulations further elucidate the nanoscale structure of the interfacial complexes. The results suggest that ion hydration and ion-ion correlations play a key role in the competitive adsorption process.

Amphiphilic phospholipids and nanoparticles functionalized with hydrophobic capping ligands have previously been extensively investigated for their capacity to self-assemble into Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface. However, understanding of composite films consisting of both nanoparticles and phospholipids, and by extension, the complex interactions arising between nanomaterials and biological membranes, remains limited. In this work, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) with an average core diameter of 6 nm were incorporated into 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) monolayers in area ratios ranging from 0.1 to 20% area coverage at a surface pressure of 30 mN/m. High resolution liquid surface X-ray scattering studies revealed a phase separation of the DPPC and Au-NP components of the composite film, as confirmed with atomic force microscopy after the film was transferred to a substrate. At low Au-NP content, the structural organization of the phase-separated film is best described as a DPPC film containing isolated islands of Au-NPs. However, increasing the Au-NP content beyond 5% area coverage transforms the structural organization of the composite film to a long-range interconnected network of Au-NP strands surrounding small seas of DPPC, where the density of the Au-NP network increases with increasing Au-NP content. The observed phase separation and structural organization of the phospholipid and nanoparticle components in these Langmuir monolayers are useful for understanding interactions of nanoparticles with biological membranes.

We report the results of experimental studies of the short time-long wavelength behavior of collective particle displacements in quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional colloid suspensions. Our results are represented by the behavior of the hydrodynamic function H(q) that relates the effective collective diffusion coefficient, D_e(q) with the static structure factor S(q) and the self-diffusion coefficient of isolated particles D_0: H(q)=D_e(q)S(q)/D_0. We find an apparent divergence of H(q) as q->0 with the form H(q) proportional to q^-gamma, 1.70 we infer that D_e(q) does. We provide evidence that this divergence arises from the interplay of boundary conditions on the flow of the carrier liquid and many-body hydrodynamic interactions between colloid particles that affect the long wavelength behavior of the particle collective diffusion coefficient in the suspension. We speculate that in the q1D and q2D systems studied the divergence of H(q) might be associated with a q-dependent partial slip boundary condition, specifically an effective slip length that increases with decreasing q. We also verify, using data from the work of Lin, Rice and Weitz (J. Chem. Phys. 99, 9585 (1993)), the prediction by Bleibel et al (arXiv:1305.3715), that D_e(q) for a monolayer of colloid particles constrained to lie in the interface between two fluids diverges as 1/q as q->0. The verification of that prediction, which is based on an analysis that allows two-dimensional colloid motion embedded in three-dimensional suspending fluid motion, supports the contention that the boundary conditions that define a q2D system play a very important role in determining the long wavelength behavior of the collective diffusion coefficient.

Nanoparticles with hydrophobic capping ligands and amphiphilic phospholipids are both found to self-assemble into monolayer films when deposited on the air water interface. By separately measuring the anisotropic stress response of these films under uniaxial compression, we obtain both the 2D compressive and shear moduli of a range of different thin nanoparticle and phospholipid films. The compressive moduli of both nanoparticle and lipid films in the solid phase are on the same order of magnitude, whereas the shear moduli of the lipid films are found to be significantly lower. Additionally the moduli of the nanoparticle films depended substantially on the polydispersity of the constituent particles: broader size distribution lowered the stiffness of the nanoparticle film., Comment: 23 pages, 9 Figures

X-ray reflectivity studies demonstrate the condensation of a monovalent ion at the electrified interface between electrolyte solutions of water and 1,2-dichloroethane. Predictions of the ion distributions by standard Poisson-Boltzmann (Gouy-Chapman) theory are inconsistent with these data at higher applied interfacial electric potentials. We report the results of an experimental study of a colloid fluid confined to a quasi-one dimensional (q1D) ribbon channel as a function of channel width and colloid density. Our findings confirm the principal predictions of previous theoretical studies of such systems. These are (1) that the density distribution of the liquid transverse to the ribbon channel exhibits stratification; (2) that even at the highest density the order along the strata, as measured by the longitudinal pair correlation function, is characteristic of a liquid; and (3) the q1D pair correlation functions in different strata exhibits anisotropic behavior, resembling that found in a Monte Carlo simulation for the in-plane pair correlation function of a hard sphere fluid in a planar slit., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, accepted to Physical Review E

The results of x-ray reflectivity studies of two oil/water (liquid/liquid) interfaces are inconsistent with recent predictions of the presence of a vapor-like depletion region at hydrophobic/aqueous interfaces. One of the oils, perfluorohexane, is a fluorocarbon whose super-hydrophobic interface with water provides a stringent test for the presence of a depletion layer. The other oil, heptane, is a hydrocarbon and, therefore, is more relevant to the study of biomolecular hydrophobicity. A two dimensional crystalline layer is found at the surface of the liquid eutectic Au$_{82}$Si$_{18}$ alloy above its melting point $T_M=359 ^{\circ}$C. Underlying this crystalline layer we find a layered structure, 6-7 atomic layers thick. This surface layer undergoes a first-order solid-solid phase transition occurring at $371 ^{\circ}$C. The crystalline phase observed for T$>$371 $^{\circ}$C is stable up to at least 430 $^{\circ}$C. Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction data at T$>$371 $^{\circ}$C imply lateral order comprising two coexisting phases of different oblique unit cells, in stark contrast with the single phase with a rectangular unit cell found for low-temperature crystalline phase $359 ^{\circ}$C$

X-ray reflectivity studies reveal atomic-level surface-segregation at the free surface of the eutectic Au71Sn29 liquid alloy. The surface-segregation extends up to three layers, in which the top layer is almost a pure monolayer of Sn, the second layer is almost a pure monolayer of Au and the third layer appears to be slightly enhanced in Au. Although the surface-segregation concentration profiles can be qualitatively accounted for by the theories of Defay-Prigogine and Strohl-King, they cannot satisfactorily account for the measured surface tension. X-ray measurements reveal a crystalline monolayer at the surface of the eutectic liquid Au_{82}Si_{18}, at temperatures above the alloy's melting point. Surface-induced atomic layering, the hallmark of liquid metals, is also found below the crystalline monolayer. The layering depth, however, is threefold greater than that of all liquid metals studied to date. The crystallinity of the surface monolayer is notable, considering that AuSi does not form stable bulk crystalline phases at any concentration and temperature and that no crystalline surface phase has been detected thus far in any pure liquid metal or nondilute alloy. Synchrotron x-ray reflectivity is used to study ion distributions at the liquid-liquid interface between a nitrobenzene solution of tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate (TBATPB) and a water solution of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr). The concentration of TBABr is varied to alter the ion distribution. Our x-ray measurements are inconsistent with several commonly used theories of ion distributions, including Gouy-Chapman, modified Verwey-Niessen, and the MPB5 version of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. These structural measurements are described well by ion distributions predicted by a version of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation that explicitly includes a free energy profile for ion transfer across the interface when this profile is described by a simple analytic form or by a potential of mean force from molecular dynamics simulations. Resonant x-ray reflectivity of the surface of the liquid phase of the Bi$_{43}$Sn$_{57}$ eutectic alloy reveals atomic-scale demixing extending over three near-surface atomic layers. Due to the absence of underlying atomic lattice which typically defines adsorption in crystalline alloys, studies of adsorption in liquid alloys provide unique insight on interatomic interactions at the surface. We report the results of an x-ray scattering study that reveals oxidation kinetics and formation of a previously unreported crystalline phase of SnO at the liquid-vapour interface of Sn. Our experiments reveal that the pure liquid Sn surface does not react with molecular oxygen below an activation pressure of \~5.0*10-6 Torr. Above that pressure a rough solid Sn oxide grows over the liquid metal surface. Once the activation pressure has been exceeded the oxidation proceeds at pressures below the oxidation pressure threshold. The observed diffraction pattern associated with the surface oxidation does not match any of the known Sn oxide phases. The data have an explicit signature of the face-centred cubic structure, however it requires lattice parameters that are about 9% smaller than those reported for cubic structures of high-pressure phases of Sn oxides. X-ray reflectivity measurements on the free surface of liquid Sn are presented. They exhibit the high-angle peak, indicative of surface-induced layering, also found for other pure liquid metals (Hg, Ga and In). However, a low-angle peak, not hitherto observed for any pure liquid metal, is also found, indicating the presence of a high-density surface layer. Fluorescence and resonant reflectivity measurements rule out the assignment of this layer to surface-segregation of impurities. The reflectivity is modelled well by a 10% contraction of the spacing between the first and second atomic surface layers, relative to that of subsequent layers. We have studied the correlated Brownian motion of micron-sized particles suspended in water and confined between two plates. The hydrodynamic interaction between the particles exhibits three anomalies. (i) The transverse coupling is negative, i.e., particles exert "anti-drag" on one another when moving perpendicular to their connecting line. (ii) The interaction decays with inter-particle distance r as 1/r^2, faster than in unconfined suspensions but slower than near a single wall. (iii) At large distances the pair interaction is independent of concentration within the experimental accuracy. The confined suspension thus provides an unusual example of long-range, yet essentially pairwise correlations even at high concentration. We study experimentally and theoretically the hydrodynamic coupling between Brownian colloidal particles diffusing along a linear channel. The quasi-one-dimensional confinement, unlike other constrained geometries, leads to a sharply screened interaction. Consequently, particles move in concert only when their mutual distance is smaller than the channel width, and two-body interactions remain dominant up to high particle densities. The coupling in a cylindrical channel is predicted to reverse sign at a certain distance, yet this unusual effect is too small to be currently detectable., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
