We investigate the spectroscopic characteristics of Intermediate Luminosity Red Transients (ILRTs), a class of elusive objects with peak luminosity between that of classical novae and standard supernovae. We present the extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic monitoring of four ILRTs, namely NGC 300 2008OT-1, AT 2019abn, AT 2019ahd and AT 2019udc. First we focus on the evolution of the most prominent spectral features observed in the low resolution spectra, then we discuss more in detail the high resolution spectrum collected for NGC 300 2008OT-1 with the Very Large Telescope equipped with UVES. Finally we analyse late time spectra of NGC 300 2008OT-1 and AT 2019ahd through comparisons with both synthetic and observed spectra. Balmer and Ca lines dominate the optical spectra, revealing the presence of slowly moving circumstellar medium (CSM) around the objects. The line luminosity of H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and Ca II NIR triplet presents a double peaked evolution with time, possibly indicative of interaction between fast ejecta and the slow CSM. The high resolution spectrum of NGC 300 2008OT-1 reveals a complex circumstellar environment, with the transient being surrounded by a slow ($\sim$30 km s$^{-1}$) progenitor wind. At late epochs, optical spectra of NGC 300 2008OT-1 and AT 2019ahd show broad ($\sim$2500 km s$^{-1}$) emission features at $\sim$6170 A and $\sim$7000 A which are unprecedented for ILRTs. We study the evolution of extremely metal-poor AGB stars, with metallicities down to [Fe/H]=-5, to understand the main evolutionary properties, the efficiency of the processes able to alter their surface chemical composition and to determine the gas and dust yields. We calculate two sets of evolutionary sequences of stars in the 1-7.5Msun mass range, evolved from the pre-main sequence to the end of the AGB phase. To explore the extremely metal-poor chemistries we adopted the metallicities Z=3x10^{-5} and Z=3x10^{-7} which correspond, respectively to [Fe/H]=-3 and [Fe/H]=-5. The results from stellar evolution modelling are used to calculate the yields of the individual chemical species. We also modelled dust formation in the wind, to determine the dust produced by these objects. The evolution of AGB stars in the extremely metal-poor domain explored here proves tremendously sensitive to the initial mass of the star. M<2Msun stars experience several third dredge-up events, which favour the gradual surface enrichment of C12 and the formation of significant quantities of carbonaceous dust, of the order of 0.01Msun. The C13 and nitrogen yiel are found to be significantly smaller than in previous explorations of low-mass, metal-poor AGB stars, owing to the weaker proton ingestion episodes experienced during the initial AGB phases. M>5Msun stars experience hot bottom burning and their surface chemistry reflects the equilibria of a very advanced proton-capture nucleosynthesis; little dust production takes place in their wind. Intermediate mass stars experience both third dredge-up and hot bottom burning: they prove efficient producers of nitrogen, which is formed by proton captures on C12 nuclei of primary origin dredged-up from the internal regions., Comment: 27 papers, 13 figures. LBVs are massive evolved stars that suffer sporadic and violent mass-loss events. They have been proposed as the progenitors of some core-collapse SNe, but this idea is still debated due to the lack of direct evidence. Since SNRs can carry in their morphology the fingerprints of the progenitor stars as well as of the inhomogeneous CSM sculpted by the progenitors, the study of SNRs from LBVs could help to place core-collapse SNe in context with the evolution of massive stars. We investigate the physical, chemical and morphological properties of the remnants of SNe originating from LBVs, in order to search for signatures, revealing the nature of the progenitors, in the ejecta distribution and morphology of the remnants. As a template of LBVs, we considered the actual LBV candidate Gal 026.47+0.02. We selected a grid of models, which describe the evolution of a massive star with properties consistent with those of Gal 026.47+0.02 and its final fate as core-collapse SN. We developed a 3D HD model that follows the post-explosion evolution of the ejecta from the breakout of the shock wave at the stellar surface to the interaction of the SNR with a CSM characterized by two dense nested toroidal shells, parametrized in agreement with multi-wavelength observations of Gal 026.47+0.02. Our models show a strong interaction of the blast wave with the CSM which determines an important slowdown of the expansion of the ejecta in the equatorial plane where the two shells lay, determining a high degree of asymmetry in the remnant. Recent studies show that the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba in the Galaxy can be explained if different production sites, hosting r- and s-processes, are taken into account. However, the question of unambiguously identifying these sites is still unsolved. Massive stars are shown to play an important role in the production of s-material if rotation is considered. In this work, we study in detail the contribution of rotating massive stars to the production of Sr and Ba, in order to explain their chemical evolution, but also to constrain the rotational behaviour of massive stars. A stochastic chemical evolution model was employed to reproduce the enrichment of the Galactic halo. We developed new methods for model-data comparison which help to objectively compare the stochastic results to the observations. We employed these methods to estimate the value of free parameters which describe the rotation of massive stars, assumed to be dependent on the stellar metallicity. We constrain the parameters using the observations for Sr and Ba. Employing these parameters for rotating massive stars in our stochastic model, we are able to correctly reproduce the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba, but also Y, Zr and La. The data supports a decrease of both the mean rotational velocities and their dispersion with increasing metallicity. Our results show that a metallicity-dependent rotation is a necessary assumption to explain the s-process in massive stars. The decomposition of the Solar system abundances of heavy isotopes into their s- and r- components plays a key role in our understanding of the corresponding nuclear processes and the physics and evolution of their astrophysical sites. We present a new method for determining the s- and r- components of the Solar system abundances, fully consistent with our current understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and galactic chemical evolution. The method is based on a study of the evolution of the solar neighborhood with a state-of-the-art 1-zone model, using recent yields of low and intermediate mass stars as well as of massive rotating stars. We compare our results with previous studies and we provide tables with the isotopic and elemental contributions of the s- and r-processes to the Solar system composition., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We present observations and analysis of 18 stripped-envelope supernovae observed during 2013 -- 2018. This sample consists of 5 H/He-rich SNe, 6 H-poor/He-rich SNe, 3 narrow lined SNe Ic and 4 broad lined SNe Ic. The peak luminosity and characteristic time-scales of the bolometric light curves are calculated, and the light curves modelled to derive 56Ni and ejecta masses (MNi and Mej). Additionally, the temperature evolution and spectral line velocity-curves of each SN are examined. Analysis of the [O I] line in the nebular phase of eight SNe suggests their progenitors had initial masses $<20$ Msun. The bolometric light curve properties are examined in combination with those of other SE events from the literature. The resulting dataset gives the Mej distribution for 80 SE-SNe, the largest such sample in the literature to date, and shows that SNe Ib have the lowest median Mej, followed by narrow lined SNe Ic, H/He-rich SNe, broad lined SNe Ic, and finally gamma-ray burst SNe. SNe Ic-6/7 show the largest spread of Mej, ranging from $\sim 1.2 - 11$ Msun, considerably greater than any other subtype. For all SE-SNe $<$Mej$>=2.8\pm{1.5}$ Msun which further strengthens the evidence that SE-SNe arise from low mass progenitors which are typically $<5$ Msun at the time of explosion, again suggesting Mzams $<25$ Msun. The low $<$Mej$>$ and lack of clear bimodality in the distribution implies $<30$ Msun progenitors and that envelope stripping via binary interaction is the dominant evolutionary pathway of these SNe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, no changes to the previous submission

This project aims at exploiting the wide-field and limiting-magnitude capabilities of the LSST to fully characterise the resolved stellar populations in/around six Local Group stellar systems of different morphological type at ~30 to ~400 kpc distance from us. We selected targets that host red giant branch (RGB) stars which are within the reach of Gaia and not yet (all) saturated with the LSST. We will use RR Lyrae stars, Cepheids, SX Phoenicis, delta Scuti stars and Long Period Variables, along with the Color Magnitude Diagram of the resolved stellar populations in these 6 systems to: i) trace their different stellar generations over a spatial extension and with a depth that only the LSST can achieve; ii) measure their distances using variable stars of different type/parent stellar population and the Tip of the RGB; iii) map their 3D structures up to the periphery of their halos; iv) search for tidal streams; and v) study their Star Formation Histories over unprecedented large fractions of their bodies. Supernovae (SNe) are considered to have a major role in dust enrichment of high redshift galaxies and, due to the short lifetimes of interstellar grains, in dust replenishment of local galaxies. Here we explore how SN dust yields depend on the mass, metallicity, and rotation rate of the progenitor stars, and on the properties of the explosion. To this aim, assuming uniform mixing inside the ejecta, we quantify the dust mass produced by a sample of SN models with progenitor masses $13~M_{\odot} \leq M \leq 120~M_{\odot}$, metallicity $\rm -3 \leq [Fe/H] \leq 0$, rotation rate $\rm v_{\rm rot} = 0$ and $300$~km/s, that explode with a fixed energy of $1.2 \times 10^{51}$~erg (FE models) or with explosion properties calibrated to reproduce the $\rm ^{56}Ni$ - $M$ relation inferred from SN observations (CE models). We find that rotation favours more efficient dust production, particularly for more massive, low metallicity stars, but that metallicity and explosion properties have the largest effects on the dust mass and its composition. In FE models, SNe with $M \leq 20 - 25 ~M_{\odot}$ are more efficient at forming dust: between 0.1 and 1 $M_\odot$ is formed in a single explosion, with a composition dominated by silicates, carbon and magnetite grains when $\rm [Fe/H] = 0$, and by carbon and magnetite grains when $\rm [Fe/H] < 0$. In CE models, the ejecta are massive and metal-rich and dust production is more efficient. The dust mass increases with $M$ and it is dominated by silicates, at all [Fe/H]., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We study the evolved stellar population of the galaxy Sextans A. This galaxy is one of the lowest metallicity dwarfs in which variable asymptotic giant branch stars have been detected, suggesting that little metal enrichment took place during the past history. The analysis consists in the characterization of a sample of evolved stars, based on evolutionary tracks of asymptotic giant branch and red super giant stars, which include the description of dust formation in their winds. Use of mid-infrared and near-infrared data allowed us to identify carbon-rich sources, stars undergoing hot bottom burning and red super giants. The dust production rate, estimated as $6\times 10^{-7} M_{\odot}/$yr, is dominated by $\sim 10$ carbon stars, with a small contribution of higher mass M-stars, of the order of $4\times 10^{-8} M_{\odot}/$yr. Recent improvements in stellar models for intermediate-mass and massive stars are recalled, together with their expectations for the synthesis of radioactive nuclei of lifetime $\tau \lesssim 25$ Myr, in order to re-examine the origins of now extinct radioactivities, which were alive in the solar nebula. The Galactic inheritance broadly explains most of them, especially if $r$-process nuclei are produced by neutron star merging according to recent models. Instead, $^{26}$Al, $^{41}$Ca, $^{135}$Cs and possibly $^{60}$Fe require nucleosynthesis events close to the solar formation. We outline the persisting difficulties to account for these nuclei by Intermediate Mass Stars (2 $\lesssim $ M/M$_\odot \lesssim 7 - 8$). Models of their final stages now predict the ubiquitous formation of a $^{13}$C reservoir as a neutron capture source; hence, even in presence of $^{26}$Al production from Deep Mixing or Hot Bottom Burning, the ratio $^{26}$Al/$^{107}$Pd remains incompatible with measured data, with a large excess in $^{107}$Pd. This is shown for two recent approaches to Deep Mixing. Even a late contamination by a Massive Star meets problems. In fact, inhomogeneous addition of Supernova debris predicts non-measured excesses on stable isotopes. Revisions invoking specific low-mass supernovae and/or the sequential contamination of the pre-solar molecular cloud might be affected by similar problems, although our conclusions here are weakened by our schematic approach to the addition of SN ejecta. We study the evolved stellar population of the Local Group galaxy IC10, with the aim of characterizing the individual sources observed and to derive global information on the galaxy, primarily the star formation history and the dust production rate. To this aim, we use evolutionary sequences of low- and intermediate-mass ($M < 8~M_{\odot}$) stars, evolved through the asymptotic giant branch phase, with the inclusion of the description of dust formation. We also use models of higher mass stars. From the analysis of the distribution of stars in the observational planes obtained with IR bands, we find that the reddening and distance of IC10 are $E(B-V)=1.85$ mag and $d=0.77$ Mpc, respectively. The evolved stellar population is dominated by carbon stars, that account for $40\%$ of the sources brighter than the tip of the red giant branch. Most of these stars descend from $\sim 1.1-1.3~M_{\odot}$ progenitors, formed during the major epoch of star formation, which occurred $\sim 2.5$ Gyr ago. The presence of a significant number of bright stars indicates that IC10 has been site of significant star formation in recent epochs and currently hosts a group of massive stars in the core helium-burning phase. We present a comprehensive study of the abundance evolution of the elements from H to U in the Milky Way halo and local disk. We use a consistent chemical evolution model, metallicity dependent isotopic yields from low and intermediate mass stars and yields from massive stars which include, for the first time, the combined effect of metallicity, mass loss and rotation for a large grid of stellar masses and for all stages of stellar evolution. The yields of massive stars are weighted by a metallicity dependent function of the rotational velocities, constrained by observations as to obtain a primary-like $^{14}$N behavior at low metallicity and to avoid overproduction of s-elements at intermediate metallicities. We show that the solar system isotopic composition can be reproduced to better than a factor of two for isotopes up to the Fe-peak, and at the 10\% level for most pure s-isotopes, both light ones (resulting from the weak s-process in rotating massive stars) and the heavy ones (resulting from the main s-process in low and intermediate mass stars). We conclude that the light element primary process (LEPP), invoked to explain the apparent abundance deficiency of the s-elements with A< 100, is not necessary. We also reproduce the evolution of the heavy to light s-elements abundance ratio ([hs/ls]) - recently observed in unevolved thin disk stars - as a result of the contribution of rotating massive stars at sub-solar metallicities. We find that those stars produce primary F and dominate its solar abundance and we confirm their role in the observed primary behavior of N. In contrast, we show that their action is insufficient to explain the small observed values of C12/C13 in halo red giants, which is rather due to internal processes in those stars., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS

The spatial distribution of elemental abundances in the disc of our Galaxy gives insights both on its assembly process and subsequent evolution, and on the stellar nucleogenesis of the different elements. Gradients can be traced using several types of objects as, for instance, (young and old) stars, open clusters, HII regions, planetary nebulae. We aim at tracing the radial distributions of abundances of elements produced through different nucleosynthetic channels -the alpha-elements O, Mg, Si, Ca and Ti, and the iron-peak elements Fe, Cr, Ni and Sc - by using the Gaia-ESO idr4 results of open clusters and young field stars. From the UVES spectra of member stars, we determine the average composition of clusters with ages >0.1 Gyr. We derive statistical ages and distances of field stars. We trace the abundance gradients using the cluster and field populations and we compare them with a chemo-dynamical Galactic evolutionary model. Results. The adopted chemo-dynamical model, with the new generation of metallicity-dependent stellar yields for massive stars, is able to reproduce the observed spatial distributions of abundance ratios, in particular the abundance ratios of [O/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] in the inner disc (5 kpc

Dust grains are classically thought to form in the winds of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, there is increasing evidence today for dust formation in supernovae (SNe). To establish the relative importance of these two classes of stellar sources of dust, it is important to know the fraction of freshly formed dust in SN ejecta that is able to survive the passage of the reverse shock and be injected in the interstellar medium. We have developed a new code (GRASH\_Rev) which follows the newly-formed dust evolution throughout the supernova explosion until the merging of the forward shock with the circumstellar ISM. We have considered four well studied SNe in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud: SN1987A, CasA, the Crab Nebula, and N49. For all the simulated models, we find good agreement with observations and estimate that between 1 and 8$\%$ of the observed mass will survive, leading to a SN dust production rate of $(3.9 \pm 3.7) \times 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ in the Milky Way. This value is one order of magnitude larger than the dust production rate by AGB stars but insufficient to counterbalance the dust destruction by SNe, therefore requiring dust accretion in the gas phase., Comment: Proceedings of the conference "Supernova Remnants: an Odyssey in Space after Stellar Death"

We quantify the role of Population (Pop) III core-collapse supernovae (SNe) as the first cosmic dust polluters. Starting from a homogeneous set of stellar progenitors with masses in the range [13 - 80] Msun, we find that the mass and composition of newly formed dust depend on the mixing efficiency of the ejecta and the degree of fallback experienced during the explosion. For standard Pop III SNe, whose explosions are calibrated to reproduce the average elemental abundances of Galactic halo stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5, between 0.18 and 3.1 Msun (0.39 - 1.76 Msun) of dust can form in uniformly mixed (unmixed) ejecta, and the dominant grain species are silicates. We also investigate dust formation in the ejecta of faint Pop III SN, where the ejecta experience a strong fallback. By examining a set of models, tailored to minimize the scatter with the abundances of carbon-enhanced Galactic halo stars with [Fe/H ] < -4, we find that amorphous carbon is the only grain species that forms, with masses in the range 2.7 10^{-3} - 0.27 Msun (7.5 10^{-4} - 0.11 Msun) for uniformly mixed (unmixed) ejecta models. Finally, for all the models we estimate the amount and composition of dust that survives the passage of the reverse shock, and find that, depending on circumstellar medium densities, between 3 and 50% (10 - 80%) of dust produced by standard (faint) Pop III SNe can contribute to early dust enrichment., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 22 pages, 12 figures, 12 tables

In the course of the TOPoS (Turn Off Primordial Stars) survey, aimed at discovering the lowest metallicity stars, we have found several carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars. We here present our analysis of six CEMP stars. Calcium and carbon are the only elements that can be measured in all six stars. The range is -5.0<=[Ca/H]< -2.1 and 7.12<=A(C)<=8.65. For star SDSS J1742+2531 we were able to detect three FeI lines from which we deduced [Fe/H]=-4.80, from four CaII lines we derived [Ca/H]=-4.56, and from synthesis of the G-band we derived A(C)=7.26. For SDSS J1035+0641 we were not able to detect any iron lines, yet we could place a robust (3sigma) upper limit of [Fe/H]< -5.0 and measure the Ca abundance, with [Ca/H]=-5.0, and carbon, A(C)=6.90. No lithium is detected in the spectrum of SDSS J1742+2531 or SDSS J1035+0641, which implies a robust upper limit of A(Li)<1.8 for both stars. Our measured carbon abundances confirm the bimodal distribution of carbon in CEMP stars, identifying a high-carbon band and a low-carbon band. We propose an interpretation of this bimodality according to which the stars on the high-carbon band are the result of mass transfer from an AGB companion, while the stars on the low-carbon band are genuine fossil records of a gas cloud that has also been enriched by a faint supernova (SN) providing carbon and the lighter elements. We present a new set of zero metallicity models in the range 13-80 $\rm M_\odot$ together to the associated explosive nucleosynthesis. These models are fully homogeneous with the solar metallicity set we published in Limongi & Chieffi (2006) and will be freely available at the web site http://www.iasf-roma.inaf.it./orfeo/public{\_}html. We developed a new population synthesis code for groups of massive stars, where we model the emission of different forms of energy and matter from the stars of the association. In particular, the ejection of the two radioactive isotopes 26Al and 60Fe is followed, as well as the emission of hydrogen ionizing photons, and the kinetic energy of the stellar winds and supernova explosions. We investigate various alternative astrophysical inputs and the resulting output sensitivities, especially effects due to the inclusion of rotation in stellar models. As the aim of the code is the application to relatively small populations of massive stars, special care is taken to address their statistical properties. Our code incorporates both analytical statistical methods applicable to small populations, as well as extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the inclusion of rotation in the stellar models has a large impact on the interactions between OB associations and their surrounding interstellar medium. The emission of 26Al in the stellar winds is strongly enhanced, compared to non-rotating models with the same mass-loss prescription. This compensates the recent reductions in the estimates of mass-loss rates of massive stars due to the effects of clumping. Despite the lower mass-loss rates, the power of the winds is actually enhanced for rotating stellar models. The supernova power (kinetic energy of their ejecta) is decreased due to longer lifetimes of rotating stars, and therefore the wind power dominates over supernova power for the first 6 Myr after a burst of star-formation. For populations typical of nearby star-forming regions, the statistical uncertainties are large and clearly non-Gaussian., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 12 pages

The light elements Li, O, Na, Al, and Mg are known to show star to star variations in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 6752. Such variations are interpreted as due to processing in a previous generation of stars. In this paper we investigate the abundances of the alpha-element sulphur, for which no previous measurements exist. In fact this element has not been investigated in any Galactic globular cluster so far. The only globular cluster for which such measurements are available is Terzan 7, which belongs to the Sgr dSph. We use high resolution spectra of the S I Mult. 1, acquired with the UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m VLT-Kueyen telescope, for turn-off and giant stars in the two globular clusters. The spectra are analyzed making use of ATLAS static plane parallel model atmospheres and SYNTHE spectrum synthesis. We also compute 3D corrections from CO5BOLD hydrodynamic models and apply corrections due to NLTE effects taken from the literature. In the cluster NGC 6752 sulphur has been measured only in four subgiant stars. We find no significant star to star scatter and a mean <[S/Fe]> = +0.49 +- 0.15, consistent with what observed in field stars of the same metallicity. In the cluster 47 Tuc we measured S in 4 turn-off and 5 subgiant stars with a mean <[S/Fe]> = +0.18 +- 0.14. While this result is compatible with no star to star scatter we notice a statistically significant correlation of the sulphur abundance with the sodium abundance and a tentative correlation with the silicon abundance., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

SN 2006jc is a peculiar supernova (SN), in which the formation of dust has been confirmed at an early epoch of ~50 days after the explosion. We investigate the possibility of such an earlier formation of dust grains in the expanding ejecta of SN 2006jc, applying the Type Ib SN model that is developed to reproduce the observed light curve. We find that the rapid decrease of the gas temperature in SN 2006jc enables the condensation of C grains in the C-rich layer at 40-60 days after the explosion, which is followed by the condensation of silicate and oxide grains until ~200 days. The average radius of each grain species is confined to be less than 0.01 micron due to the low gas density at the condensation time. The calculated total dust mass reaches ~1.5 Msun, of which C dust shares 0.7 Msun. On the other hand, based on the calculated dust temperature, we show that the dust species and mass evaluated to reproduce the spectral energy distribution observed by AKARI and MAGNUM at day 200 are different from those obtained by the dust formation calculations; the dust species contributing to the observed flux are hot C and FeS grains with masses of $5.6 \times 10^{-4}$ Msun and $2.0 \times 10^{-3}$ Msun, respectively, though we cannot defy the presence of a large amount of cold dust such as silicate and oxide grains up to 0.5 Msun. One of the physical processes responsible for the difference between calculated and evaluated masses of C and FeS grains could be considered to be the destruction of small-sized clusters by energetic photons and electrons prevailing within the ejecta at the earlier epoch., Comment: 25 pages including 6 figures and 1 table. We present a theoretical model for Type Ib supernova (SN) 2006jc. We calculate the evolution of the progenitor star, hydrodynamics and nucleosynthesis of the SN explosion, and the SN bolometric light curve (LC). The synthetic bolometric LC is compared with the observed bolometric LC constructed by integrating the UV, optical, near-infrared (NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes. The progenitor is assumed to be as massive as $40M_\odot$ on the zero-age main-sequence. The star undergoes extensive mass loss to reduce its mass down to as small as $6.9M_\odot$, thus becoming a WCO Wolf-Rayet star. The WCO star model has a thick carbon-rich layer, in which amorphous carbon grains can be formed. This could explain the NIR brightening and the dust feature seen in the MIR spectrum. We suggest that the progenitor of SN 2006jc is a WCO Wolf-Rayet star having undergone strong mass loss and such massive stars are the important sites of dust formation. We derive the parameters of the explosion model in order to reproduce the bolometric LC of SN 2006jc by the radioactive decays: the ejecta mass $4.9M_\odot$, hypernova-like explosion energy $10^{52}$ ergs, and ejected $^{56}$Ni mass $0.22M_\odot$. We also calculate the circumstellar interaction and find that a CSM with a flat density structure is required to reproduce the X-ray LC of SN 2006jc. This suggests a drastic change of the mass-loss rate and/or the wind velocity that is consistent with the past luminous blue variable (LBV)-like event., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. Chemical evolution models are presented for the anomalous globular cluster Omega Centauri. After demonstrating that the chemical features of Omega Cen can not be reproduced in the framework of the closed-box self-enrichment scenario, we discuss a model in which this cluster is the remnant of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy evolved in isolation and then swallowed by the Milky Way. Both infall of primordial matter and metal-enriched gas outflows have to be considered in order to reproduce the stellar metallicity distribution function, the age-metallicity relation and several abundance ratios. Yet, as long as an ordinary stellar mass function and standard stellar yields are assumed, we fail by far to get the enormous helium enhancement required to explain the blue main sequence (and, perhaps, the extreme horizontal branch) stellar data. Rotating models of massive stars producing stellar winds with large helium excesses at low metallicities have been put forward as promising candidates to solve the `helium enigma' of Omega Cen (Maeder & Meynet, 2006, A&A, 448, L37). However, we show that for any reasonable choice of the initial mass function the helium-to-metal enrichment of the integrated stellar population is unavoidably much lower than 70 and conclude that the issue of the helium enhancement in Omega Cen still waits for a satisfactory explanation. We present new grids of evolutionary models for the so-colled ``Anomalous'' Cepheids (ACs), adopting Z=0.0001 and various assumptions on the progenitor mass and mass-loss efficiency. These computations are combined with the results of our previous set of pulsation models and used to build synthetic populations of the predicted pulsators as well as to provide a Mass-Luminosity relation in the absence of mass-loss. We investigate the effect of mass-loss on the predicted boundaries of the instability strip and we find that the only significant dependence occurs in the Period-Magnitude plane, where the synthetic distribution of the pulsators is, on average, brighter by about 0.1 mag than the one in absence of mass-loss. Tight Period-Magnitude relations are derived in the K band for both fundamental and first overtone pulsators, providing a useful tool for distance evaluations with an intrinsic uncertainty of about 0.15 mag, which decreases to about 0.04 mag if the mass term is taken into account. The constraints provided by the evolutionary models are used to derive evolutionary (i.e, mass-independent) Period-Magnitude-Color relations which provide distance determinations with a formal uncertainty of the order of about 0.1 mag, once the intrinsic colors are well known. We also use model computations from the literature to investigate the effect of metal content both on the instability strip and on the evolutionary Period-Magnitude-Color relations. Finally, we compare our theoretical predictions with observed variables and we confirm that a secure identification of actual ACs requires the simultaneous information on period, magnitude and color, that also provide constraints on the pulsation mode., Comment: accepted

We discuss at some extent the production of Fe60 in massive stars in the range between 11 and 120 Msun both in the hydrostatic and explosive stages. We discuss in detail the evolutionary properties of low mass stars M< 1 M(Solar) having metallicity lower than Z=10^(-6) from the pre- main sequence up to (almost) the end of the Asymptotic Giant Branch phase. We also discuss the possibility that the large [C,N/Fe] observed on the surface of the most Iron poor star presently known, HE0107-5240, may be attributed to the autopollution induced by the penetration of the He convective shell into the H rich mantle during the He core flash of a low mass, very low metallicity star. On the basis of a quite detailed analysis, we conclude that the autopollution scenario cannot be responsible for the observed chemical composition of HE0107-5240.

The abundance of the neutron-rich magnesium isotopes observed in metal-poor stars is explained quantitatively with a chemical evolution model of the local Galaxy that considers - for the first time - the metallicity-dependent contribution from intermediate mass stars. Previous models that simulate the variation of Mg isotopic ratios with metallicity in the solar neighbourhood have attributed the production of Mg25 and Mg26 exclusively to hydrostatic burning in massive stars. These models match the data well for [Fe/H]>-1.0 but severely underestimate Mg25/Mg24 and Mg26/Mg24 at lower metallicities. Earlier studies have noted that this discrepancy may indicate a significant role played by intermediate-mass stars. Only recently have detailed calculations of intermediate-mass stellar yields of Mg25 and Mg26 become available with which to test this hypothesis. Based on an extensive grid of stellar models between 13 and 25 Mo and a wide range of metallicities, we have studied the light curves of core collapse supernovae, their application to cosmology and evolutionary effects with redshift. The direct link between the hydro and radiation transport allows to calculate monochromatic light curves. With decreasing metallicity Z and increasing mass, progenitors tend to explode as compact Blue Supergiants and produce sub-luminous supernovae that are about 1.5 mag dimmer compared to "normal" SNe II with Red Supergiant progenitors (RSGs). Progenitors with small masses tend to explode as RSGs even at low Z. The consequences are obvious for probing the chemical evolution, namely, a strong bias when using the statistics of core collapse supernovae to probe the history of star formation. Our study is limited in scope with respect to the explosion energies and the production of radioactive Ni. Within the class of "extreme SNe II-P" supernovae, the light curves are rather insensitive with respect to the progenitor mass and explosion energy compared to analytic models which are based on parameterized stellar structures. We expect a wider range of brightness due to variations in Ni56 because radioactive energy is a main source of luminosity. We present a new set of presupernova evolutions and explosive yields of massive stars of initial solar composition (Y=0.285, Z=0.02) in the mass range 13-35 Msun. All the models have been computed with the latest version (4.97) of the FRANEC code that now includes a nuclear network extending from neutrons to Mo98. The explosive nucleosynthesis has been computed twice: a first one with an hydro code and a second one following the simpler radiation dominated shock approximation (RDA)., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 12 tables. Motivated by the recent detection of metals in different components of the high redshift universe and by the abundance ratios measured in the extremely metal-poor stars of our Galaxy, we study the nucleosynthesis constraints that this imposes on an early generation of stars (Population III). To do so we take into account the chemical yields obtained from homogeneous evolutionary calculations of zero metal stars in the mass range $3\la m/M_\odot\la 40$ (Limongi et al. 2000, Chieffi et al. 2001). We also consider the role played by metal-free very massive objects (m$>100$ M$_\odot$). Using both analytical and numerical chemical evolution models, we confront model predictions from the different choices of the mass function proposed for Population III with the observational constraints. We show that low values of star formation efficiency ($<1%$) are required so as not to exceed the minimum metallicity ([C/H]$\approx -2.4$) measured in the high redshift systems for any of the IMFs proposed. We also show that the observational constraints require $\Omega_{sr}< 3\times 10^{-3}\Omega_b$, confirming previous claims that the possible contribution of the stellar remnants from Population III to the baryonic dark matter is insignificant. At present, however, the scarcity of abundance measurements for high redshift systems does not permit us to put severe limitations on the nature of the initial mass function for Population III. In fact, overabundances of alpha-elements with respect to iron of the order of those measured in damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems are obtained for any of the IMFs tested. Nevertheless, to account for the very large [C,N/Fe] ratios found in a considerable number of extremely metal-poor stars of our Galaxy, an IMF peaking at the intermediate stellar mass range (4-8 M$_\odot$) is needed., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Evolutionary effects with redshift of core collapse supernovae and their application to cosmology have been studied based on an extensive grid of stellar models between 13 and 25 Mo, and their light curves after the explosion. With decreasing metallicity Z and increasing mass, progenitors tend to explode as compact Blue Supergiants (BSG) and produce subluminous supernovae which are about 1.5 mag. dimmer compared to 'normal' SNeII with Red Supergiant (RSG) progenitors. Progenitors with small masses tend to explode as RSGs even with low Z. The consequences are obvious for probing the chemical evolution. We identify 'extreme SNe IIp' supernovae as a rather homogeneous class which may allow their use as standard candles for distance determination accurate within 30 %. Due to their unique light curves, no spectra need to be taken for their identification, and follow-up observations can be limited to a very small dynamical range in brightness. This means that distance determination by 'extreme SNe IIp" are possible up to redshifts of about 3 using 8-meter class telescopes. We present the evolutionary properties of a set of massive stellar models (namely 13, 15, 20 and 25 $\rm M_\odot$) from the main sequence phase up to the onset of the iron core collapse. All these models have initial solar chemical composition, i.e. Y=0.285 and Z=0.02. A 179 isotope network, extending from neutron up to $\rm ^{68}Zn$ and fully coupled to the evolutionary code has been adopted from the Carbon burning onward. We have studied the evolution of intermediate mass (M.ge.5Mo) zero metal (Z=0) stars with particular attention to the AGB phase. At variance with previous claims we find that these stars experience thermal instability (the so called thermal pulses). The critical quantity which controls the onset of a thermally pulsing phase is the amount of CNO in the envelope during the AGB. For these stars the central He burning starts in the blue side of the HR diagram and the 1^{st} dredge up does not take place. Then the envelope maintains its initial composition up to the beginning of the AGB phase. However, during the early AGB the 2^{nd} dredge-up occurs and fresh He and CNO elements are engulfed in the convective envelope. We find that in stars with M.ge.6Mo the resulting amount of ^{12}C is large enough to sustain a normal CNO burning within the H shell and consequently the star enters the usual thermal pulse phase. In the 5Mo model, owing to the lower ^{12}C enhancement in the envelope after the 2^{nd} dredge-up, the He burning shell suffers weak thermal instabilities. 9 of these thermal oscillation are needed before the He burning luminosity reaches 3x10^5 Lo and a first convective shell develops in between the two burning shells. Later on a second convective shell forms at the base of the H rich envelope. This convective zone cross the H/He discontinuity and partially overlaps the previous one, dredging up fresh ^{12}C. After a huge H flash, a quiescent CNO burning settle on. A catalog including a set of the most recent Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) is presented for a sample of 61 Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs). We used this data-base to perform an homogeneous systematic analysis of the evolved sequences (namely, Red Giant Branch (RGB), Horizontal Branch (HB) and Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB)). Based on this analysis, we present: (1) a new procedure to measure the level of the ZAHB (V_ZAHB) and an homogeneous set of distance moduli obtained adopting the HB as standard candle; (2) an independent estimate for RGB metallicity indicators and new calibrations of these parameters in terms of both spectroscopic ([Fe/H]_CG97) and global metallicity ([M/H], including also the alpha-elements enhancement). The set of equations presented can be used to simultaneously derive a photometric estimate of the metal abundance and the reddening from the morphology and the location of the RGB in the (V,B-V)-CMD. (3) the location of the RGB-Bump (in 47 GGCs) and the AGB-Bump (in 9 GGCs). The dependence of these features on the metallicity is discussed.
