Abstract

This study presents a free vibration analysis of spherical shell segments using simple first-order shear deformation shell theory (S-FSDT) for the first time. The shell structure is made of functionally graded porous graphene platelet reinforced composite (FGP-GPLRC) – one kind of porous material strengthened by graphene platelets (GPLs). Effective material properties of the FGP-GPLRC are determined by the modified Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model and the mixture rule. Four types of porosity distributions and GPL dispersions are considered fully in this study. The governing equations of the shell are derived based on the S-FSDT and classical shell theory, then solved by the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method and the artificial spring technique. The results show that the S-FSDT can capture well the behaviors of the spherical shell segments. Besides, the best profile of novel FGP-GPLRC is not fixed; the physical parameters, geometric parameters, and material characteristics of the shells need to be investigated fully. Abstract

This article examines experimentally and numerically the flexural performance of low-strength reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using near-surface mounted (NSM) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) rods. Five RC rectangular beams were tested in four-point bending until failure. Four of these beams were strengthened using Bottom NSM (BNSM) or Side NSM (SNSM) rods. The results are discussed in terms of observed damage, load capacity, and midspan deflection. It is shown that the SNSM strengthening solution enhanced the cracking load of the beams by up to 19%. Similarly, the yield and ultimate load-carrying capacities of the strengthened beams increased by up to 31% and 64%, respectively. It is also shown that moment-curvature and FE approaches predict well the deflections of the strengthened RC beams within 20% and 10% of accuracy at failure. The results from nonlinear Finite Element (FE) analyses showed a better agreement with the experimental results up to failure (within a 10% of accuracy). For the beams presented in this study, the crack widths calculated by Eurocode 2 match reasonably well the measured values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A buckling-restrained knee-braced frame (BRKBF) is an efficient structural system utilizing short buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) as knee bracing elements. Because of the shorter yielding core length compared to those of conventional BRBs, one of the key parameters concerning the performance of this system is the low cycle fatigue cumulative damage of the BRBs. This paper presents a seismic design method considering the cumulative damage, performance evaluation, and collapse assessment of 3-story, 6-story, and 9-story archetype BRKBFs. An energy-based plastic design method was utilized to design the example frames. The frames were then evaluated by nonlinear static analysis and multiple-stripe analysis (MSA). The results indicated that BRKBs were able to accommodate seismic motions with limited damage. The validity of the design methodology considering cumulative damage was also confirmed.
