Soil respiration (SR) rate was measured at the burned land (BL), the cropland (CL), the forest land (FL) and the grassland (GL) of a tropical peatland in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia from 2002 to 2011 for the purpose of analysis with a relation to the drying and rewetting. The SR rate was fitted with groundwater level (GWL) to the equation of log(SR) = alpha -beta x GWL using hierarchical Bayesian analysis where alpha and beta were regression coefficients classified by GWL changing directions (drying, rewetting and fluctuating), water-filled pore space (WFPS) ranges in topsoil (low 0-0.54, intermediate 0.54-0.75 and high 0.75-1 m(3) m(-3)), and land uses (BL, CL, FL and GL). SR rate (Mean +/- SD, mg C m(-2) h(-1)) was the significantly largest in the CL (333 +/- 178) followed by GL (259 +/- 151), FL (127 +/- 69) and lastly BL (100 +/- 90). In the CL, the significantly larger SR rate was found in the rewetting period than in the drying period in the high WFPS range. Also, the significantly steeper slope (beta) in the rewetting period was obtained in the high WFPS range than in the drying period. These results suggested that the rewetting of peatland enhanced the SR rate rapidly in the CL, and that the further rise of GWL decreased the SR rate. In contrast, the SR rate in the rewetting period was significantly smaller than in the drying period in the BL in the high WFPS range, because the BL in the high WFPS range was flooded in most cases. The SR rate in the rewetting period was not significantly different from the drying period in the FL and GL. All of beta were significant in the high WFPS range in all land uses, but not in the low-intermediate WFPS ranges, suggesting that GWL was not controlling factor of the SR rate when the GWL was deep due to the disconnection of capillary force under dry conditions. In Southeast Asia, peatland is widely distributed and has accumulated a massive amount of soil carbon, coexisting with peat swamp forest (PSF). The peatland, however, has been rapidly degraded by deforestation, fires and drainage for the last two decades. Such disturbances change hydrological conditions, typically groundwater level (GWL), and accelerate oxidative peat decomposition. Evapotranspiration (ET) is a major determinant of GWL, whereas information on the ET of PSF is limited. Therefore, we measured ET using the eddy covariance technique for four to six years between 2002 and 2009, including El Niño and La Niña events, at three sites in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The sites were different in disturbance degree: a PSF with little drainage (UF), a heavily drained PSF (DF) and a drained burnt ex-PSF (DB); GWL was significantly lowered at DF, especially in the dry season. The ET showed a clear seasonal variation with a peak in the mid-dry season and a large decrease in the late dry season, mainly following seasonal variation in net radiation (Rn). The Rn drastically decreased with dense smoke from peat fires in the late dry season. Annual ET forced to close energy balance for four years was 1636 ± 53, 1553 ± 117 and 1374 ± 75 mm yr-1 (mean ± 1 standard deviation), respectively, at UF, DF and DB. The undrained PSF (UF) had high and rather stable annual ET, independently of El Niño and La Niña events, in comparison with other tropical rainforests. The minimum monthly-mean GWL explained 80% of interannual variation in ET for the forest sites (UF and DF); the positive relationship between ET and GWL indicates that drainage by a canal decreased ET at DF through lowering GWL. In addition, ET was decreased by 16% at DB in comparison with UF chiefly because of vegetation loss through fires.

Vast areas of deforested tropical peatlands do not receive noteworthy shading by vegetation, which increases the amount of solar radiation reaching the peat surface. Peat temperature dynamics and heterotrophic carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes were monitored under four shading conditions, i.e. unshaded, 28%, 51% and 90% shading at experiment sites established on reclaimed fallow agricultural- and degraded sites in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Groundwater tables on the sites were at about 50 cm depth, the sites were maintained vegetation free and root ingrowth to gas flux monitoring locations was prevented. Half of the four shading areas received NPK-fertilization 50 kg ha−1 for each of N, P and K during the experiment and the other half was unfertilized. Increases in shading created a lasting decrease in peat temperatures, and decreased diurnal temperature fluctuations, in comparison to less shaded plots. The largest peat temperature difference in the topmost 50 cm peat profile was between the unshaded and 90% shaded surface, where the average temperatures at 5 cm depth differed up to 3.7 °C, and diurnal temperatures at 5 cm depth varied up to 4.2 °C in the unshaded and 0.4 °C in the 90% shaded conditions. Highest impacts on the heterotrophic CO2 fluxes caused by the treatments were on agricultural land, where 90% shading from the full exposure resulted in a 33% lower CO2 emission average on the unfertilized plots and a 66% lower emission average on the fertilized plots. Correlation between peat temperature and CO2 flux suggested an approximately 8% (unfertilized) and 25% (fertilized) emissions change for each 1 °C temperature change at 5 cm depth on the agricultural land. In Southeast Asia, a huge amount of peat has accumulated under swamp forests over millennia. Fires have been widely used for land clearing after timber extraction, thus land conversion and land management with logging and drainage are strongly associated with fire activity. During recent El Niño years, tropical peatlands have been severely fire-affected and peatland fires enlarged. To investigate the impact of peat fires on the regional and global carbon balances, it is crucial to assess not only direct carbon emissions through peat combustion but also oxidative peat decomposition after fires. However, there is little information on the carbon dynamics of tropical peat damaged by fires. Therefore, we continuously measured soil CO2 efflux (RP) through oxidative peat decomposition using six automated chambers on a burnt peat area, from which about 0.7 m of the upper peat had been lost during two fires, in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The RP showed a clear seasonal variation with higher values in the dry season. The RP increased logarithmically as groundwater level (GWL) lowered. Temperature sensitivity or Q10 of RP decreased as GWL lowered, mainly because the vertical distribution of RP would shift downward with the expansion of an unsaturated soil zone. Although soil temperature at the burnt open area was higher than that in a near peat swamp forest, model simulation suggests that the effect of temperature rise on RP is small. Annual gap-filled RP was 382±82 (the mean ± one standard deviation of six chambers) and 362±74 gC m-2 y-1 in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 years, respectively. Simulated RP showed a significant negative relationship with GWL on an annual basis, which suggests that every GWL lowering by 0.1 m causes additional RP of 89 gC m-2 y-1. The RP accounted for 21-24% of ecosystem respiration on an annual basis.

Our previous research showed large amounts of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission (>200 kg N ha^[-1] yr^[-1]) from agricultural peat soil. In this study, we investigated the factors influencing relatively large N2O fluxes and the source of nitrogen (N) substrate for N2O in a tropical peatland in central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Using a static chamber method, N2O and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were measured in three conventionally cultivated croplands (conventional), an unplanted and unfertilized bare treatment (bare) in each cropland, and unfertilized grassland over a 3-year period. Based on the difference in N2O emission from two treatments, contribution of the N source for N2O was calculated. Nitrous oxide concentrations at five depths (5-80 cm) were also measured for calculating net N2O production in soil. Annual N fertilizer application rates in the croplands ranged from 472 to 1,607 kg N ha^[-1] yr^[-1]. There were no significant differences in between N2O fluxes in the two treatments at each site. Annual N2O emission in conventional and bare treatments varied from 10.9 to 698 and 6.55 to 858 kg N ha^[-1] year^[-1], respectively. However, there was also no significant difference between annual N2O emissions in the two treatments at each site. This suggests most of the emitted N2O was derived from the decomposition of peat. There were significant positive correlations between N2O and CO2 fluxes in bare treatment in two croplands where N2O flux was higher than at another cropland. Nitrous oxide concentration distribution in soil measured in the conventional treatment showed that N2O was mainly produced in the surface soil down to 15 cm in the soil. The logarithmic value of the ratio of N2O flux and nitrate concentration was positively correlated with water filled pore space. These results suggest that large N2O emission in agricultural tropical peatland was caused by denitrification with high decomposition of peat. In addition, N2O was mainly produced by denitrification

Pteropus vampyrus natunae, the Bornean subspecies of the large flying fox, has important roles in pollination but unsustainable hunting has been reported in Malaysian states. We provide the first description of hunting techniques and intensity in Indonesian Borneo. In forests around Palangka Raya this species is captured in canopy-level nets to support trade in the provincial capital. We estimate that in 2003 4,500 individuals were extracted from a single location in 30 days, which, together with trends reported in interviews with hunters and traders, suggests that hunting in this region is intensive and probably causing severe population declines. Further surveys are needed throughout Kalimantan to determine if this trend is occurring around other cities and whether intervention is needed to safeguard viable populations.

An investigation of the recruit, survivorship and growth of naturally regenerating tree species on canal bank was conducted to select tree species which are suitable for preceding planting in drained and burnt peat swamp lands in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Top of the canal bank were open, with greater soil moisture deficit and higher soil temperatures than on the next intact forest floor. The abundant trees were asam-asam (Ploiarium alternifolium),garunggang (Cratoxylon arborescens) and tumih (Combretocarpus rotundatus). New regeneration of these trees on the canal bank was confirmed during this investigation and mortality was very low. These results indicated that P. alternifolium,C. arborescens and C. rotundatuswere tolerant of intensive radiation, soil drought and high soil temperatures during germination. The annual height increments were 189-232 cm y-1 (P. alternifolium),118-289 cm y-1 (C. arborescens)and 27-255 cm y-1 (C. rotundatus); thus, these three species could be classified as fast-growing with tolerance to open and dry conditions. Such characteristics were important to avoid competition with herbs, ferns,and/ or climbers.
