This thesis discusses the heritage approach of adaptive reuse as a way to preserve and protect abandoned churches in Limburg. For this, a discussion is had on the social and cultural dynamic and history of Limburg. This is a province in the Netherlands with a deep historical connection to the Catholic religion. This paper explores the province’s formation under the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1867, and the continuous influence of Catholicism as a unifying force in the region. In recent decades, however, the region has witnessed a great decline in Catholic engagement. This has led to the closure of many historic churches. Adaptive reuse has emerged as a strategy to adapt and repurpose these now abandoned historically important spaces to preserve their architectural, cultural, and social significance, while also meeting the new needs of the community in which these churches are located. This research explores how adaptive reuse can contribute to the social environment and the culture in these communities, offering a practical solution for the preservation of historic church buildings. Through a case study of the reuse of the Dominican Church in Maastricht as a bookshop, this paper shows the use of adaptive reuse as a heritage approach to revitalize historic churches and create a social connection between the inhabitants of the province. Flood risks and its consequences become more and more challenging and are demanding for the currently present dike systems and hydraulic structures in the Netherlands. This automatically raises the question for the possibility of adjustable temporary deployable flood defences that work autonomously. Nowadays it is more likely that a standard earthen dike will not be possible everywhere, due to site-specific characteristics such as available space or protected townscape. At these specific locations, a self-closing flood barrier can offer a solution, in view of minimally affecting the spatial quality with a reliable solution. The goal of this design study is to gain insight in the feasibility of applying a self-closing flood barrier in areas where spatial quality plays an important role and where the hydraulic boundary conditions demand for heavier structures. With the increase of densely built areas nowadays, the concept of an autonomously closing barrier is promising and an interesting alternative to consider. In this thesis the objective is to develop a customised design of an adaptive self-closing flood barrier in the upper river region of the Netherlands. The city of Arcen in this case study is characterised by its cultural-historical values and its strong connection to the Meuse. This makes it difficult to construct conventional earthen dikes. For the design purpose software with statistical data such as Hydra-NL is used to provide site characteristics, hydraulic and geotechnical boundary conditions and literature for information on currently applied barrier types and drive mechanisms. Furthermore, the design process has been completed with the help of the Design Guide Hydraulic Structures of Rijkswaterstaat and the Eurocode, from which a design originated in which stability and strength requirements have been met. Spartacusplan, the transportation plan for the Belgian province of Limburg from 2004, is now turned into the most extensive and ambitious bus rapid transit (BRT) project in Europe. However, the proposed vehicles and network do not correspond well to the region’s highly dispersed, poly-centric structure. Moreover, the dispersed urbanisation patterns and their adverse effects need further measures than Bouwshift to facilitate the spatial transition. The thesis explores the possible strategy for accelerating spatial transition through the interplay between urban and transportation planning. The thesis takes the lens of mobility justice by Sheller (2018), and seeks alternative paths to facilitating spatial transition without depriving accessibility on “unsuited” areas. To achieve these objectives, a multi-criteria analysis is conducted to determine the most suitable mix of elements and vehicle automation technology, and its corresponding infrastructural requirements. Trade-offs between accessibility gains through higher levels of automation and increased infrastructure are examined. Additionally, the study categorizes the potential of each location in Limburg based on criteria related to the built environment and accessibility. Through pattern language, the study resulted in urban design patterns and digital tools for transportation planning, providing practical guidance to urban designers and transportation planners for site-specific interventions across the province. The findings of this study suggest that, considering Limburg’s dispersed and poly-centric spatial structure, the higher infrastructural requirements for achieving level 4 driverless operations within Spartacuslijn are justified. Mark Venner (26) is boer in het Limburgse Baexem. Hij besluit in samenspraak met zijn familie in 2019 het roer om te gooien. Het traditionele melkveebedrijf wil hij ombouwen naar een multifunctioneel boerenbedrijf waarbij voedselbossen centraal staan. 5 hectare grasland is veranderd in agroforestry, de rest volgt binnenkort.

The applicability of the Sellmeijer design rule to Limburg dike sections near Well, Hout-Blerick, Buggenum, and Thorn was investigated in this thesis. This was accomplished by building a finite element numerical model, in COMSOL Multiphysics, to assess the piping in the hydrogeological systems of the research locations. The proposed model is composed by combining several groundwater and piping model principles, schematizing dike cross-sections, and calibrating the model. The schematization choices that define the model geometry of the average pipe cross-section are critical. It was decided to apply a fracture flow pipe cross-section and the piping assessment was performed iteratively for multiple pipe height values, because the true pipe height is unknown. The pipe height is expressed as a function of the number of grains and the representative grain size. According to a deterministic assessment, which was performed analytically using multiple versions of the Sellmeijer design rule and numerically using the proposed FEM model, piping does not occur at the research locations Well, Hout-Blerick and Thorn. Piping is theoretically possible at Buggenum, but only with a very small pipe height, making it appear very unlikely. The assessment also revealed that the critical head determined by using revised Sellmeijer design rule (2021) is conservative for the examined dike sections in Limburg. Furthermore, it is discovered that the original Sellmeijer design rule with the new geometry factor (1988/2011) produces critical heads that are similar to the results of the revised Sellmeijer design rule (2021) multiplied by 1.8, which is the current design rule used to assess piping in Limburg. Natuursteen is ook buiten de natuur vaak aanwezig in monumenten, gebouwen, bestratingen. In gebieden met in de bodem aanwezige steen, zal een bepaalde natuursteen vaak worden gebruikt. Dit levert 'natuursteenlandschappen' op en in b.v. Limburg komt men dat tegen. De hier beschreven gids behandelt dat aan de hand van drie stadswandelingen. Het artikel gaat daar op in en biedt daarnaast informatie over de verschillende streekgebonden natuurstenen die in Limburg (en elders) te vinden zijn.

Seit 2016 verfolgen die Niederlande einen habitatbasierten kollektiven Ansatz für sog. EU Agri-Enviornmental Climate Schemes, der von landwirtschaftlichen Kollektiven durchgeführt wird. Die Kollektive sind selbstverwaltete Gruppen, die Aufgaben von Behörden übernehmen und zwischen diesen und Landwirten vermitteln. Diese Masterarbeit untersucht als Fallstudie das Programm für landwirtschaftliche Natur- und Landschaftspflege (ANLb) in der Provinz Limburg, im Süden der Niederlande. In dessen Mittelpunkt steht das Agrarumweltkollektiv Natuurrijk Limburg. Acht Interviews mit verschiedenen Akteuren werden mit der Net-Map-Methode für eine soziale Netzwerkanalyse durchgeführt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es zunächst die Governance-Struktur des ANLb zu untersuchen. Zu diesem Zweck werden zentrale Akteure benannt und beschrieben, formelle und informelle Beziehungen und Motivationen aufgezeigt. Da es sich um eine junge kollektive Struktur handelt, ist es von Interesse, das Vorhandensein von verbindendem, überbrückendem und verknüpfendem Sozialkapital zu untersuchen sowie deren Einfluss auf die Funktionsweise des Netzwerks. Der Fall zeigt, dass der ANLb eine komplexe kollaborative Governance-Struktur ist, an der sowohl öffentliche als auch private Akteure beteiligt sind. Das Kollektiv konnte verknüpfendes Sozialkapital mit den Behörden aufbauen, während das verbindendende Sozialkapital bewahrt wurde. Um die Vorteile des neuen Systems aufrechtzuerhalten, müssen jedoch die Bottom-up-Strukturen innerhalb des Kollektivs erhalten bleiben und gestärkt werden., Since 2016, the Netherlands has been pursuing a habitat-based collective approach for agri-environment climate schemes which is carried out by agricultural collectives. The collectives are self-governing groups, that take over tasks from authorities and mediate between them and land managers. This research concerns the Agricultural Nature and Landscape Management Scheme (ANLb) in the Province of Limburg, located in the south of the Netherlands. At its core is the collective Natuurrijk Limburg. Eight interviews with different stakeholders are conducted with the Net-Map Method as a means of Social Network Analysis. The aim of the research is first to investigate the governance structure of the ANLb. For this purpose, central actors are named and described, formal and informal relationships and motivations are shown. Since it is a young collective structure, it is of interest to study the presence of bonding, bridging, and linking social capital, as well as how they affect the functioning of the network. The case shows that the ANLb is a complex collaborative governance structure involving both public and private actors. The collective has built linking social capital with the authorities while preserving bonding within, which fosters exchange and collaborative learning. However, to maintain bonding, bottom-up structures within the collective must be preserved.

Second-order Gaussian kernels have been utilized to develop three algorithms that could automatically extract ridge lines for hydrodynamic modelling. Isotropic second-order Gaussian kernels produce inaccurate lines at crossings and junctions. To avoid the malfunctioning of Second-order Gaussian kernels, one default and two alternative algorithms were developed. The first, default algorithm is based on isotropic kernels and non-maximum suppression. For the first alternative algorithm, isotropic and anisotropic kernels have been applied for the filter process. The third algorithm uses skeletonization instead of non-maximum suppression. A verification was applied to analyzed the performance of the algorithms. The Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of the default algorithm and the alternative algorithm that included anisotropic kernels was found to be 0.17. For the algorithm based on skeletonization a value of 0.08 was obtained. Hence it has been concluded that the algorithms that utilized non maximum suppression instead could more accurately detect ridge lines than the model based on skeletonization. However, the latter generated lines that contained less discontinuities. In the agricultural sector farming methods and upscaling of farmland are problematic for biodiversity and survival of farm businesses. Not all farmers can compete on the large scale, so the farmer has to find other ways of adding value to their product or business. One of the methods that will be used for that is the Material Flow Analysis to analyze a farm's outputs, for this a farmer was contacted to conduct a case study. A combination of production and landscaping measures can balance the scale towards a more viable countryside with positive ecological impact. Major flooding occurred on the Meuse River in 1993, 1995 and 2021, causing significant damage to regions in NL, BE, DE. The flood events of 1993 and 1995 occurred in the winter, while that of 2021 occurred in the summer. There are large differences in the characteristics of these floods separated by nearly three decades; not only the seasons differ, but the topography of the river bed and the shape of the flood wave have also changed. Since 1995 dikes and flood-routing measures have been constructed along the river. Although all these projects are not yet completed, the flood event of July 2021 indicates that the Meuse projects are producing the expected results. This research aims to understand the effect of the shape of the flood wave during a high-discharge event, the impact of the different types of flood protection along the river and the interaction between the main river and its tributaries. The main research question is: what are the hydrodynamic differences between the high-waters levels on the Meuse in Limburg in 1993, 1995, and 2021, and how can these differences be explained? The first step to complete this research was to gather the needed information. The second step is to identify the differences between the different flood events and assessing the impact of the different flood protection measures. The third step is to assess the impact of the different flood protection measures. After an analysis comparing inundation maps, five flood prone areas were identified and investigated, namely: Maastricht, Bunde and Meerssen, Maaseik-Roosteren, Roermond and Venlo. Flood wave characteristics play an important role: the width illustrates the duration of the event, while the height indicates the maximum water level that can be expected. In de zeer warme nacht van 19 op 20 juli 2022 werd, op het laken van een nachtvlinderopstelling, een opvallend getekende gaasvlieg waargenomen in Landsrade (Zuid-Limburg). Het bleek te gaan om Hemerobius marginatus, een nieuwe soort voor Nederland. De groene lichaamskleur in combinatie met enkele donkere vlekken langs de achterrand van de voorvleugel maken H. marginatus tot een onmiskenbare soort binnen de Europese gaasvliegenfauna. Nachtvlinderaars wordt gevraagd om goede foto’s van gaasvliegen te maken en waarnemingen door te geven, zodat deze gegevens in het Neuropterida-project meegenomen kunnen worden.

De studie van wapenvliegen is al decennia populair onder amateurs, mede door de beschikbaarheid van toegankelijke Nederlandstalige tabellen. De inheemse fauna is dan ook al jaren goed bekend en afgezien van taxonomische ontwikkelingen is de lijst van inheemse soorten al decennia stabiel. In 2021 werd een nieuwe soort aangetroffen: het oostelijk verfdrupje Oxycera meigenii. Het genus Oxycera behoort tot de fraaist gekleurde vliegen met felle gele, soms groen kleuren. Hieraan danken ze de naam verfdrupjes. Ondanks hun felgekleurde uiterlijk zijn ze niet makkelijk te vinden, omdat ze geen bloemen bezoeken.

Boomkwekerij Fleuren is een derde generatie familiebedrijf en bestaat al 100 jaar. “Het bedrijf is in 1922 begonnen en we zijn altijd al een fruitbomenkwekerij geweest, eerst hoogstam, toen half hoogstam en nu laagstam”, vertelt Yannick die op de innovatie afdeling van het bedrijf werkt. “Dat hoor je niet veel binnen de agrarische sector, een ware research and development tak.”

Pieter en Marcel Lucassen zijn derde generatie agrariërs op hun bedrijf in Afferden. Ze zijn al jaren bezig met het verduurzamen van de bedrijfsvoering. “Ik ben op een hele andere manier naar de bodem gaan kijken.”

Begin deze eeuw kwamen de gemeenten Maastricht en Meerssen, de provincie Limburg en Rijkswaterstaat met een eerste aanzet om de A2 in Maastricht te ondertunnelen en tegelijkertijd het gebied eromheen te herontwikkelen. Artsen zouden vaker natuur moeten voorschrijven aan hun patiënten. Dat zegt onder andere natuurorganisatie IVN. In het Limburgse Afferden heeft een huisarts al volop ervaring met de positieve effecten van natuur op de gezondheid van de mens. Een nieuwe benadering, die mensen minder afhankelijk maakt van de curatieve zorg. Voor coronatijd werd elke twee weken een ‘biowalk’ georganiseerd. Een wandeling in de natuur die ervoor moet zorgen dat de diabetespatiënten minder op consult hoeven te komen. Maar ook de stimulans om samen te tuinieren, buiten in beweging te zijn, elkaar te ontmoeten en het belang van gezond voedsel. En dat werkt.

Op verzoek van het ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit heeft de Commissie Deskundigen Meststoffenwet (CDM) nagegaan of het onderscheid tussen lössgronden en zandgronden in de Meststoffenwet, m.b.t. gebruiksnormen en gebruiksvoorschriften, aangepast dient te worden. Dit verzoek is voortgekomen uit de pilot "Slim Bemesten" in Zuid-Limburg.

In de winter van 2020 werden in drie Limburgse gemeenten voor de eerste keer gemeentelijke houtkanten in hakhoutbeheer genomen. Zowel vooraf als tijdens het beheer werkten landbouwers en natuurverenigingen nauw samen voor de opmaak van de beheerplannen. Nu de resultaten van dit beheer zichtbaar zijn, is ook het draagvlak voor houtkantenbeheer vergroot.

De wasbeer (Procyon lotor) is meer dan 50 jaar geleden vanuit Noord-Amerika in Europa terecht gekomen en wordt gerekend tot de invasieve exoten. Sinds enkele jaren is er in Nederland sprake van populatievorming in Limburg, met meldingen uit de omgeving van Sittard en Maastricht. In andere provincies worden ook regelmatig wasberen gezien, maar tot op heden lijkt er alleen in Limburg sprake van voortplanting. Als reactie op de zich vormende populatie heeft de provincie Limburg besloten om op te treden door de aanwezige wasberen te gaan vangen. Een belangrijke reden om in te grijpen is de ‘Europese Unielijst Invasieve Exoten’ (Verordening Nr. 1143/2014), waarin de lidstaten verplicht worden om, binnen zekere randvoorwaarden, in te grijpen om populatievorming te voorkomen of uitbreiding van exoten tegen te gaan. In Nederland zijn de provincies verantwoordelijk voor de uitvoering van deze verordening.

In this paper we describe a new blackberry species belonging to the series Mucronati (Focke) H. E. Weber: Rubus lianos A. Beek, Berkhout, Haveman & De Ronde. It resembles the Silesian variety R. koehleri subsp. polyoplon var. rhapidorhachis Kinscher ex Sudre (1911: 189), which is lectotypified here. Added is a short discussion concerning the distribution area of the new species.
