2. Anodic H 2 O 2 Generation in Carbonate-Based Electrolytes-Mechanistic Insight from Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy.

- Abstract
For the anodic H
2 O2 generation, it has been shown that the electrolyte composition can steer the reaction pathway toward increased H2 O2 generation. Previous efforts made on composition optimization found that the impact of the molar fraction of carbonate species varies for different anodes, and therefore, controversies remain concerning the reaction pathways as well as the species involved in H2 O2 formation. Considering that water oxidation results in the liberation of protons within the anode microenvironment, the corresponding acidification would cause an equilibrium shift between carbonate species, which in turn may modulate the reaction pathway. We determined the changes in the fraction of carbonate species in the vicinity of an anode by performing local pH measurements using a Au nanoelectrode positioned in close proximity to an operating anode by shear-force scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be confirmed that the main anionic species at the interface is HCO3 - , at potentials where H2 O2 is preferentially formed, regardless of the pH value in the bulk. The simultaneous use of a Au-Pt double barrel microelectrode in generator-collector SECM measurements demonstrates that the local HCO3 - concentration is collectively determined by the oxidation current, buffer capacity, and bulk pH of the electrolyte., (© 2024 The Authors. 3. Controlling surface wetting in high-alkaline electrolytes for single facet Pt oxygen evolution electrocatalytic activity mapping by scanning electrochemical cell microscopy.

- Abstract
Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) has been used to explore structure-electrocatalytic activity relationships through high-resolution mapping of local activities of electrocatalysts. However, utilizing SECCM in strongly alkaline conditions presents a significant challenge due to the high wettability of the alkaline electrolyte leading to a substantial instability of the droplet in contact with the sample surface, and hence to unpredictable wetting and spreading of the electrolyte. The spreading phenomena in SECCM is confirmed by the electrochemical response of a free-diffusing redox probe and finite element method (FEM) simulations. Considering the significance of alkaline electrolytes in electrocatalysis, these wetting issues restrict the application of SECCM for electrocatalyst elucidation in highly alkaline electrolytes. We resolve this issue by incorporating a small percentage of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the electrolyte inside the SECCM capillary to increase the surface tension of the electrolyte. To demonstrate successful wetting mitigation and stable SECCM mapping, we performed oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mapping on polycrystalline Pt by using 1 M KOH with an optimized PVP concentration. The OER activity maps correlated with the orientation of the exposed facets determined by electron backscatter diffraction and reveal different activities between Pt facets, hence confirming our methodology for exploring electrocatalytic activities in single facet scale in concentrated alkaline media. 4. Small intestine metastasis from endometrial carcinoma initially presented as enterocutaneous fistula: a case report and literature review.

- Abstract
Although endometrial cancer is the fourth most common malignancy among women, it rarely metastasizes to the small intestine. Cases of endometrial recurrence to the intestine clinically present with secondary anemia, melena, abdominal cramps, and epigastric pain. Only a dozen cases are reported in the literature, but none presented with an enterocutaneous fistula. In this report, we present a case of an 88-year-old female patient previously treated for endometrial adenocarcinoma with surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy. Fourteen months after the surgery, the patient presented with an enterocutaneous fistula on the anterior abdominal wall, which was confirmed to be a metastasis from the primary tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first case of endometrial cancer metastasizing to the small intestine with involvement of the anterior abdominal wall and the occurrence of an enterocutaneous fistula, which was treated with radical surgery., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Published by Oxford University Press and JSCR Publishing Ltd. © The Author(s) 2024.)

- Abstract
Pyonephrosis is a serious condition that can lead to kidney dysfunction, loss of the organ, and even fatal end due to its complications. The underlying etiologic factors include lithiasis, recurrent urinary infections, ureter stricture, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, malignancy, and retroperitoneal fibrosis. One of the rare possible complications of pyonephrosis is a retroperitoneal rupture with spontaneous communication to the abdomen causing secondary peritonitis. We present such a case which is the first video-documented report of the peritoneal rupture site within the abdominal cavity.

Biloma is an encapsulated intra or extra-hepatic collection of bile after biliary tree trauma. Post-procedural and traumatic biliary damage are the most common etiologic causes. Gallbladder perforation due to acute cholecystitis rarely presents with biloma occurrence. 7. The Role of Pancreatic Stone Protein (PSP) as a Biomarker of Pregnancy-Related Diseases.

- Abstract
Background: Pancreatic stone protein (PSP) is a biochemical serum marker that contains levels that are elevated in various inflammatory and infectious diseases. The role of PSP in the diagnosis of these diseases seems to be more important compared to clinically established biochemical serum markers in discriminating the severity of the same diseases. Standard values for PSP in pregnant women in relation to gestational age have been reported recently. Additionally, increased PSP levels have been observed to be associated with renal dysfunction in pregnant women. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic role of PSP in pregnancy-related diseases, such as pre-eclampsia (PE), hemolysis-elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome. In addition, the study aims to assess its diagnostic role in inflammation-triggered diseases as preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) or COVID-19-positive pregnant women. Materials and Methods: In this single-centred prospective study performed at a tertiary university hospital between 2013 and 2021, we included 152 pregnant women who were diagnosed with either PE, HELLP syndrome, or PPROM. In December 2020, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) approved an amendment to the study protocol. Depending on the underlying disease, single or serial-serum PSP measurements were assessed. These PSP values were compared to PSP levels of women with normal pregnancies. Results: Pregnant women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia or HELLP syndrome had significantly increased PSP values (mean 9.8 ng/mL, SD 2.6) compared to healthy singleton pregnant women (mean 7.9 ng/mL, SD 2.6, p ≤ 0.001). There was no difference in serum PSP in pregnant women with PPROM compared to women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies (mean in PPROM: 7.9 ng/mL; SD 2.9 versus mean in healthy pregnancies: 7.9 ng/mL; SD 2.6, p = 0.98). Furthermore, no difference in the PSP values in women with or without intra-amniotic infection was observed (infection: mean 7.9 ng/mL; SD 2.8 versus no infection: mean 7.8 ng/mL; SD 3, p = 0.85). The mean value of PSP in COVID-19-infected women during pregnancy (8.5 ng/mL, SD 2.3) was comparable to healthy singleton pregnancies (mean 7.9 ng/mL, SD 2.6), p = 0.24. Conclusions: The novel serum biomarker PSP is significantly upregulated in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Our observations call for the further evaluation of PSP in randomized controlled clinical trials to demonstrate the actual role of PSP in pregnancy-related diseases and whether it may provide new approaches for the management and discrimination of the severity of these gestational conditions.

8. Serum Pancreatic Stone Protein Reference Values in Healthy Pregnant Women: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: In non-pregnant populations, pancreatic stone protein (PSP) has been reported to have a higher diagnostic performance for identifying severe inflammatory and infectious disease than other established biomarkers., Objective: To generate reference values for serum PSP in pregnancy and compare them to the values of the general healthy population., Design: A prospective cohort study., Setting: A single center., Population: Healthy women with singleton and multiple pregnancies., Methods: This is a prospective single-center cohort study. Between 2013 and 2021, samples of 5 mL peripheral blood were drawn from 440 healthy pregnant women. Therein, 393 cases were singletons and 47 were multiple pregnancies. Serum PSP levels were measured by specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The main outcome measures were serum PSP level (ng/mL) reference values in healthy pregnant women., Results: The mean PSP reference values in women with singleton pregnancies were 7.9 ± 2.6 ng/mL (95% CI; 2.69-13.03 ng/mL). The PSP values in women with multiple pregnancies (9.17 ± 3.06 ng/mL (95% CI; 3.05-15.28 ng/mL)) were significantly higher ( p = 0.001). The PSP values in the first trimester (6.94 ± 2.53 ng/mL) were lower compared to the second (7.42 ± 2.21 ng/mL) and third trimesters (8.33 ± 2.68 ng/mL, p = 0.0001). Subgroup analyses in singletons revealed no correlations between PSP values, maternal characteristics, and pre-existing medical conditions., Conclusion: The PSP values in healthy pregnant women (4-12 ng/mL) were in the range of the reference values of the general healthy population (8-16 ng/mL). This insight blazes a trail for further clinical studies on the use of PSP as a potential novel biomarker for the early detection of pregnancy-related diseases such as chorioamnionitis.

11. Unraveling the Link between Catalytic Activity and Agglomeration State with Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy.

- Abstract
In this article, we set up a methodology to investigate the relationship between the catalytic activity and the agglomeration state of platinum group metal-free ORR catalysts. To this end, we have developed a statistical approach based on scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two catalysts are investigated at very low loadings in order to access their intrinsic activity. Differences in terms of dispersion, stability of the inks, and adherence on the substrate are observed, highlighting the importance of measuring the exact amount and agglomeration state of the materials under study. The agglomeration state of the deposits measured by AFM explains the differences in activity measured by SECM. The performances of the catalysts are compared, and the contributions of the intrinsic activity and the agglomeration state are identified. This work paves the way toward various applications ranging from the benchmarking of new catalysts to the optimization of an ink formulation, for ORR and beyond.

12. Synchronous Onset of Two Complications in Colon Cancer: A Case Report.

- Abstract
As one of the most frequent malignancies in the world's population, colorectal cancer is also associated with its complications (perforation, obstruction and bleeding). Their incidence is common (2.6-50%), but synchronous occurrence of two of them in a patient is a rare condition and it is reported in small series or as a case report in the literature. We present a case of the descending colon cancer in a female patient that presented with perforation on tumor site with consecutive retroperitoneal and lumbar abscess and simultaneous presentation of large bowel obstruction. The patient was admitted and operated the same day, the abscess was opened and drained and bowel resection was performed with colostomy creation. The postoperative recovery was uneventful and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 10. Due to the high morbidity/mortality in cases of colon cancer emergencies, Hartman's procedure is often a reasonable option. As the world energy crisis remains a long-term challenge, development and access to renewable energy sources are crucial for a sustainable modern society. Electrochemical energy conversion devices are a promising option for green energy supply, although the challenge associated with electrocatalysis have caused increasing complexity in the materials and systems, demanding further research and insights. In this field, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) represents a specific source of knowledge and understanding. Thus, our aim is to present recent findings on electrocatalysts for electrolysers and fuel cells, acquired mainly through scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and other related scanning probe techniques.
