Objective: Pro-resolving molecules, including the peptide Angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)], have potential adjunctive therapy for infections. Here we evaluate the actions of Ang-(1-7) in betacoronavirus infection in mice., Methods: C57BL/6J mice were infected intranasally with the murine betacoronavirus MHV-3 and K18-hACE2 mice were infected with SARS-CoV-2. Mice were treated with Ang-(1-7) (30 µg/mouse, i.p.) at 24-, 36-, and 48-hours post-infection (hpi) or at 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h. For lethality evaluation, one additional dose of Ang-(1-7) was given at 120 hpi. At 3- and 5-days post- infection (dpi) blood cells, inflammatory mediators, viral loads, and lung histopathology were evaluated., Results: Ang-(1-7) rescued lymphopenia in MHV-infected mice, and decreased airways leukocyte infiltration and lung damage at 3- and 5-dpi. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and virus titers in lung and plasma were decreased by Ang-(1-7) during MHV infection. Ang-(1-7) improved lung function and increased survival rates in MHV-infected mice. Notably, Ang-(1-7) treatment during SARS-CoV-2 infection restored blood lymphocytes to baseline, decreased weight loss, virus titters and levels of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in improvement of pulmonary damage, clinical scores and lethality rates., Conclusion: Ang-(1-7) protected mice from lung damage and death during betacoronavirus infections by modulating inflammation, hematological parameters and enhancing viral clearance., (© 2024. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a frequent cause of antimicrobial-resistant hospital-acquired pneumonia, especially in critically ill patients. Inflammation triggered by P. aeruginosa infection is necessary for bacterial clearance but must be spatially and temporally regulated to prevent further tissue damage and bacterial dissemination. Emerging data have shed light on the pro-resolving actions of angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] signaling through the G protein-coupled receptor Mas (MasR) during infections. Herein, we investigated the role of the Ang-(1-7)/Mas axis in pneumonia caused by P. aeruginosa by using genetic and pharmacological approach and found that Mas receptor-deficient animals developed a more severe form of pneumonia showing higher neutrophilic infiltration into the airways, bacterial load, cytokines, and chemokines production and more severe pulmonary damage. Conversely, treatment of pseudomonas-infected mice with Ang-(1-7) was able to decrease neutrophilic infiltration in airways and lungs, local and systemic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and increase the efferocytosis rates, mitigating lung damage/dysfunction caused by infection. Notably, the therapeutic association of Ang-(1-7) with antibiotics improved the survival rates of mice subjected to lethal inoculum of P. aeruginosa, extending the therapeutic window for imipenem. Mechanistically, Ang-(1-7) increased phagocytosis of bacteria by neutrophils and macrophages to accelerate pathogen clearance. Teres major injuries are rare and are generally treated conservatively, except in high-performance athletes. This report describes a case of traumatic rupture of the teres major at its myotendinous junction in a professional gymnast. The patient underwent surgical treatment 10 days after the injury. Six months post-surgery, the patient achieved complete recovery of the range of motion and strength, returning to the pre-injury performance level, guided by physiotherapy rehabilitation. This is the first documented case in the literature of surgical treatment of this injury in a professional gymnast. Objectives: Football is a globally played sport that poses potential risks for musculoskeletal injuries. Upper-limb injuries have a lower incidence rate than lower-limb injuries but can still cause absenteeism and performance impairment in football players. This descriptive epidemiological study aimed to evaluate and compare the epidemiological data on shoulder injuries among professional football players in two major Brazilian football championships., Methods: Data were collected throughout the championships, and club physicians medically evaluated each player during official games using two online forms. The collected information included the player's age and position, injury diagnosis, laterality, location on the field where the injury occurred, playing time, imaging examinations performed, need for surgical treatment, time to return to play (TRP), and recurrence of the injury. The incidence of injuries was evaluated using the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) incidence formula., Results: A total of 107 shoulder injuries were recorded (4.3% of all injuries), with a FIFA incidence of 0.847. Glenohumeral dislocations (GHDs) and acromioclavicular dislocations (ACDs) accounted for 37.38% and 35.51% of all shoulder injuries, respectively. Goalkeepers and defenders presented, respectively, a 2.15 and 1.57 times increased risk of suffering shoulder injuries, while attackers presented a 0.63 times decreased risk. Injury recurrence was observed in 14.95% of cases, with GHDs and ACDs showing recurrence rates of 35.00% and 5.26%, respectively. Surgery was performed in 9.35% of cases, with GHDs representing 50% of all surgeries. The average TRP was 22.37 days, with severe and major injuries accounting for 11.21% and 10.28% of all injuries, respectively. Goalkeepers had the highest average TRP of 36.15 days. Recurring injuries had a higher average TRP of 33.44 days compared to nonrecurring injuries, which had an average TRP of 20.43 days. Surgically treated injuries had the highest average TRP of 112.5 days., Conclusion: Shoulder injuries in the professional football scenario are of great concern due to the high recurrence rate and need for surgical treatment, which will lead to a long TRP. Objective: To assess the epidemiological profile of Jiu-Jitsu black belt athletes, including the prevalence of pain and shoulder function., Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with Jiu-Jitsu athletes from 2014 to 2016. The studied variables were: sex, age, dominant limb, weight, height, profession, time of Jiu-Jitsu practice, weekly training hours, other practiced sports, comorbidities, injuries and previous surgeries, medications and habits. For the functional assessment of the shoulder, the ASES Score was used., Results: 53 male athletes were evaluated. There was a prevalence of alcohol consumption (60.4%) and supplement use (32.1%). The practice of other sports included weight training (49.1%) and other martial arts (17%). There was a prevalence of knee (66.0%) and shoulder (52.8%) injuries and, in some cases, the need for surgical procedures. There was a prevalence of shoulder pain (73.6%) and more than half of the athletes (52.9%) had minimal or moderate limitation of shoulder function., Conclusion: Jiu-jitsu black belt athletes often have a history of injuries, with the shoulder being the second most affected body part. In more than half of the athletes, there was a prevalence of shoulder pain and functional limitation, according to the ASES Score. The transosseous equivalent suture bridge technique has been widely used for rotator cuff repair, especially for large tears. During the fixation of the second lateral anchor, the first group of sutures may become loose due to anchor malposition or manual overtensioning of the second group of sutures. To restore the suture's tension, a spare suture from the second lateral anchor may be passed beneath the loose suture to tighten it with a simple knot. Background: Although there is a low incidence of shoulder instability in women, this population is still representative and is often associated with lower rates of return to sports. Few studies have evaluated the results of the Latarjet procedure in this population., Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of female athletes who underwent the Latarjet procedure between 2013 and 2018. The participants were followed up for 3 years. The primary outcomes of the study included the visual analog scale for pain; range of motion: active elevation, passive elevation, active external rotation, and passive external rotation. The functional scores were as follows: American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index, and the Athletic Shoulder Outcome Rating Scale. Additional data were collected regarding return to sport, complication rates, and patient satisfaction., Results: Thirteen female athletes who practice Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Handball, Judo, or Weight training were evaluated. There was a significant reduction in the mean range of motion for all movements at 4 weeks after surgery. Patients recovered a range of motion similar to the preoperative values after 6 months. The mean visual analog scale reached 6.39 at the first week after surgery and decreased to values below preop at 8 weeks. The mean preoperative Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index was 126.77 (min 118; max 135), and at the end of follow-up, the WOSI index was 45.08 (min 37; max 65; P  < .05). The mean preoperative American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score was 41.61 (min 35; max 46), and at the end of follow-up, the mean ASES score was 84.46 (min 80; max 90; P  < .05). The mean Athletic Shoulder Outcome Rating Scale in the preoperative period was 39.38 (min 37; max 42), and at the end of follow-up, the mean ASORS score was 83.15 (min 77; max 85; P  < .05). The rate of return to sports was 92.3%, and 84.6% of patients were satisfied with the surgery. The aesthetic satisfaction rate was 76.9%. The complication rate was 15.4% (1 screw failure and 1 dislocation recurrence)., Conclusion: Latarjet surgery in female athletes showed high rates of return to sports and improved functional scores without impairing range of motion after the procedure. Objective  To describe the protocols implemented to adapt the orthopedic team to the COVID-19 pandemic; a secondary objective is to assess the behavior of hospital and departmental variables when implementing such measures. Methods  The present is a retrospective study describing three protocols: 1) reduction in the risk of infection for patients and healthcare workers; 2) adaptation of work, academic and scientific activities; and 3) adaptation of the orthopedic treatment during the pandemic. We analyzed hospital and departmental variables, including the number of patients seen in the emergency room and outpatient clinic, the number of hospitalized patients, suspected and confirmed cases in patients and orthopedic team members, changes in teaching activities from on-site attendance to videoconferencing, and number of surgeries. Period A, from March 3 to 16, was compared with period B, from March 17 to 30, 2020, which corresponded to the implementation of the protocols. Results  There was a decrease in the number of outpatients and inpatients. One confirmed and two suspected cases were notified. Among the departmental members, there were 12 suspected and 6 confirmed cases. The weekly frequency of classes was maintained, while the clinical-scientific meetings decreased from ten to three. In addition, the number of surgeries was reduced. Conclusions  The present study demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of the rapid implementation of intervention protocols in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The protocols focused on reducing the risk of infection for patients and healthcare professionals, adapting work, academic and scientific activities, and modifying the orthopedic treatment. Anterior glenohumeral instability is a frequent cause of professional soccer players' removal, reduced performance, and prolonged recovery. Players are subjected to intense physical contact and high performance, thus demanding lower rates of recurrence after surgical correction so they can return to sport quickly., Objective: To assess professional soccer players treated by the Lartajet technique considering the rate and time of return to sports activities, complications or failures., Methods: Analysis held between 2010 and 2018 of professional soccer players diagnosed with anterior shoulder instability operated by the open procedure of Lartajet in our service., Results: The mean return to professional sports was 93.5 days. The mean time of surgery in relation to the first dislocation was 12.4 months. Each athlete had 4.3 shoulder dislocations until the procedure was performed. The rate of recurrence was zero and subluxation was not observed., Conclusion: The Latarjet procedure allowed all professional athletes to return to competitive activities quickly, without dislocations and subluxation, negative seizure and without complications during follow-up.
