Purpose: This study aimed to assess and interpret how vitreoretinal surgeons use surgical videos available on social media as complementary learning tools to improve, review, or update their abilities, considering their different levels of expertise. Fazendo parte há mais de um século nas cidades, os aglomerados subnormais (popularmente chamados de favelas) representam as últimas opções para quem não tem condições de arcar com os custos de uma moradia. São frequentemente localizados em áreas marcadas pela precariedade e construídos com vários tipos de materiais. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a questão destes aglomerados em São José do Rio Preto, cidade localizada na região noroeste do estado de São Paulo e que já lida com esses problemas desde meados da década de 1960. Apesar das administrações municipais colocarem em prática programas para remoção destas favelas, elas sempre ressurgem em outros pontos da cidade. Como procedimentos metodológicos, realizamos consultas a trabalhos acadêmicos, trabalho de campo e entrevistas com a ex-Secretária da Habitação, com um vereador local e com o coordenador da única favela remanescente na cidade.

Located in the Northwest region of the state of São Paulo, São José do Rio Preto has been undergoing a rapid urban expansion that followed two distinct ways: the expansion by the illegal production of habitations, between the 1980s and 1990s; and the expansion by legal production, between the decade of 2000 and 2010. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze these two ways, which not only make the urban area more dispersed, but also result in a worsening of segregation in the city. For this, we carried out fieldwork and research to collect data about the history of the processes, and conducted an interview with the city’s Housing Secretary, where we get better information about the current situation. Localizada na região Noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, São José do Rio Preto vem passando por uma rápida expansão urbana que seguiu duas vias distintas: a expansão pela produção ilegal de moradias, entre as décadas de 1980 e 1990; e a expansão pela produção legal, entre as décadas de 2000 e 2010. Assim, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar essas duas vias que não só tornam a mancha urbana mais dispersa, mas que também trazem como resultado um agravamento da segregação na cidade. Para isso, realizamos trabalhos de campo e pesquisas para a coleta de dados sobre o histórico dos processos, assim como realizamos uma entrevista com a Secretária da Habitação da cidade, onde nos informamos melhor sobre a situação atual.

Ultramafic soils are originated from ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and serpentinite and are highly enriched in metals (e.g., Ni, Cr, and Co) and depleted in plant nutrients (e.g., P, K, and Ca). Such characteristics make these soils unfavorable for agriculture and have raised environmental concerns on metal release to the environment. From another perspective, ultramafic soils host a diverse flora with higher endemism than surrounding non-ultramafic areas, which has provided scientists with an opportunity to investigate the evolutionary genetics of plant adaptation. Some plant species adapted to these stressful edaphic conditions developing the ability to accumulate uncommonly high metal concentrations in the harvestable biomass. Such species, called metal hyperaccumulators, can extract metals from ultramafic soils, especially Ni, in a circular economy approach in which the metal-rich biomass is incinerated to generate valuable bio-ores. Phytomining promises to turn ultramafic soils and low-grade ore bodies into economically viable alternatives to metal extraction. Here, we review the current knowledge on ultramafic soils and the most promising hyperaccumulators used to exploit them in temperate and tropical climates. In the tropics, including Brazil, the search for new hyperaccumulator candidates for phytomining and the knowledge to crop these species is incipient and holds untapped opportunities. Despite the feasibility of the phytomining chain has been proven, large-scale demonstrations of profitability are needed to establish the technology.

Objetivo A ruptura do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) é uma das lesões mais comuns em atletas e costuma estar associada a danos às estruturas anterolaterais. Essa combinação de lesões apresenta-se clinicamente como um teste de pivô shift de alto grau. A hipótese deste estudo é que pacientes com insuficiência do LCA e teste de pivô shift de alto grau devem apresentar aumento da rotação interna (RI) do joelho. Métodos Vinte e dois pacientes foram testados. Após raquianestesia efetiva, dois testes clínicos foram realizados com o paciente em decúbito dorsal. Primeiro, o teste de pivô shift bilateral foi realizado manualmente e seu grau foi registrado. A seguir, com o joelho em 90º, o examinador desenhou a projeção do pé em posição neutra e em rotação interna máxima e o ângulo de rotação interna foi medido a partir dos eixos construídos entre o ponto central do calcanhar e do hálux. Resultados Nos joelhos com insuficiência de LCA, observou-se que existe delta de RI médio estatisticamente significante de 10,5° entre os grupos quando não ajustado e 10,6°, quando ajustado para idade. Conclusão Joelhos com insuficiência do LCA e com teste de pivô shift grau I não aumentaram a rotação interna em relação aos joelhos com LCA intacto. Joelhos com insuficiência de ACL e com teste de pivô shift grau II ou III aumentaram a rotação interna em relação ao joelho saudável. Purpose Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries in athletes and is often associated with damage to anterolateral structures. This combination of injuries presents itself clinically as a high grade pivot shift test. The hypothesis of this study is that patients with ACL deficiency and high-grade pivot shift test should have an increased internal knee rotation. Methods Twenty two patients were tested. After effective spinal anesthesia, two tests were performed with the patient in the supine position. First, the bilateral pivot shift test was performed manually and its grade was recorded. Then, with the knee in 90º, the examiner drew the projection of the foot in a neutral position and in maximum internal rotation and the angle of internal rotation was measured from the axes built between the central point of the heel and the hallux. Results In the ACL-deficient knees, it was observed that there is a statistically significant average IR delta of 10.5° between the groups when not adjusted and 10.6°, when adjusted for age. Conclusion Knees with ACL deficiency and with pivot shift degree I test do not increased internal rotation in relation to knees with intact ACL. Knees with ACL deficiency and with pivot shift test grade II and III increased internal rotation in relation to healthy knee.

The accumulation of metals in the dust can pose risks to human health due to direct contact with the population exposed mainly by the route of ingestion. In this sense, the study had as objectives (1) Biomonitoring the atmospheric deposition of barium, cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Vb) and zinc (Zn) by the use of mosses, (2) to evaluate the total and bioaccessible contents of these metals in samples of asphalt dust of the city of Recife and (3) to estimate the health risks of children and adults exposed to this material. The study area comprised 13 Recife urban streets with different traffic flows. Twenty - five samples composed of moss and thirty - nine samples composed of dust were collected by the routes. Moss samples were taken from trunks of tree species and dust samples were obtained by scanning 1 m² of asphalt. The total metals contents were extracted by total digestion of the moss and dust. Gastrointestinal bioaccessibility was based on the physiological basis extraction test. Total and bioaccessible contents were determined by ICP-OES. The total contents of the metals in the moss presented the following decreasing order (mg kg-1): Fe> Zn> Ba> Mn> Sr> Cu> Cr> Pb> V> Ni> Sb> Cd. (mg kg-1): Fe> Ba> Mn> Sr> Zn> Cu> Cr> Pb> V> Ni> Cd> Sb . The bioaccessible contents of all metals were higher in the gastric phase, being this enough to obtain the bioaccessibility of the metals in the dust. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were reduced by the use of bioaccessible levels and were higher for children than for adults, but were classified as acceptable for all metals in all routes of exposure. The higher vehicular flow showed the highest atmospheric deposition of metals indicating a strong traffic relation with Recife air quality. The urban dusts of the city of Recife do not present significant risks to the health of the population. However, concentrations of metals should be monitored to prevent increased risk. A emissão veicular é uma das principais fontes de metais pesados no meio urbano, decorrente do desgaste de peças e produtos automotivos e da queima de combustíveis fósseis que liberam resíduos para a atmosfera e podem ser depositados no asfalto na forma de poeira. O acúmulo de metais na poeira pode oferecer riscos à saúde humana devido ao contato direto com a população exposta principalmente pela via de ingestão. Nesse sentido, o estudo teve como objetivos (1) Biomonitorar a deposição atmosférica de bário (Ba), cádmio (Cd), cromo (Cr), cobre (Cu), ferro (Fe), manganês (Mn), níquel (Ni), chumbo (Pb), antimônio (Sb), estrôncio (Sr), vanádio (V) e zinco (Zn) pelo uso de musgos, (2) avaliar os teores totais e bioacessíveis destes metais em amostras de poeiras de asfalto da cidade do Recife e (3) estimar os riscos à saúde de crianças e adultos expostos a este material. A área do estudo compreendeu 13 vias urbanas recifenses com diferentes fluxos veiculares. Vinte e cinco amostras compostas de musgo e trinta e nove amostras compostas de poeira foram coletadas pelas vias. As amostras de musgo foram retiradas de troncos de espécies arbóreas e as de poeira foram obtidas pela varredura de 1 m² do asfalto. Os teores totais de metais foram extraídos por digestão total do musgo e poeira. A bioacessibilidade gastrointestinal baseou-se no teste de extração de base fisiológica. Os teores totais e bioacessíveis foram determinados por ICP-OES. Os teores totais dos metais no musgo apresentaram a seguinte ordem decrescente (em mg kg-1): Fe > Zn > Ba > Mn > Sr > Cu > Cr > Pb > V > Ni > Sb > Cd. Os teores totais dos metais na poeira foram inferiores ou semelhantes aos valores relatados em outras cidades do mundo e apresentaram a seguinte ordem decrescente (em mg kg-1): Fe > Ba > Mn > Sr > Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > V > Ni > Cd > Sb. Os teores bioacessíveis de todos os metais foram maiores na fase gástrica, sendo esta suficiente para a obtenção da bioacessibilidade dos metais na poeira. Os riscos carcinogênicos e não-carcinogênicos reduziram com o uso dos teores bioacessíveis e foram superiores para as crianças em relação aos adultos, porém foram classificados como aceitáveis para todos os metais em todas as vias de exposição. As vias de maior fluxo veicular apresentaram as maiores deposições atmosféricas de metais indicando forte relação do tráfego com a qualidade do ar do Recife. As poeiras urbanas da cidade do Recife não apresentam riscos significativos à saúde da população. Porém, as concentrações dos metais devem ser monitoradas para prevenir a elevação dos riscos.

The sword bean (Canavalia gladiata) is a legume whose seeds are common to the occurrence of dormancy due to the hardness of the integument, which affects the establishment of the culture and the determination of its physiological quality. Thus, the objective of the work was to overcome the dormancy of sword bean seeds, evaluating the germination and the performance of the seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized with twelve treatments and four replicates of 25 seeds. The treatments consisted of: mechanical scarification; immersion in concentrated sulfuric acid (10, 50, 90 and 130 minutes); immersion in water at 60°C (60 and 120 seconds); immersion in water at 100°C (30 and 60 seconds); immersion in alcohol (30 and 60 minutes); and control. The seedling germination and vigor (germination speed index, length and dry mass of the aerial part and root) were evaluated. The best treatment to overcome dormancy, was immersion in water at 100°C for 30 seconds. The aerial part and root detected in the vigor of the bean seeds., O feijão-espada (Canavalia gladiata) é uma leguminosa cujas sementes apresentam dormência tegumentar, o que afeta o estabelecimento da cultura e a determinação da sua qualidade fisiológica. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho consistiu em estudar pré-tratamentos das sementes conducentes à quebra de dormência das sementes, pela germinação e desempenho das plântulas. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com doze tratamentos e quatro repetições por modalidade e 25 sementes por repetição. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por: escarificação mecânica; imersão em ácido sulfúrico concentrado (10, 50, 90 e 130 minutos); imersão em água a 60°C (60 e 120 segundos); imersão em água a 100°C (30 e 60 segundos); imersão em álcool (30 e 60 minutos); e testemunha. Foram avaliadas a germinação e o vigor (índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento e massa seca de parte aérea e raiz). Entre os tratamentos para a quebra de dormência, destacou-se a imersão em água a 100°C durante 30 segundos. As avaliações de índice de velocidade de germinação, massa seca de parte aérea e raiz detectaram diferenças no vigor das sementes de feijão-espada.
