INTRODUCTION: This paper discusses the main areas of gender disparity affecting current female surgeons by looking at trending hashtags shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In tandem with contemporary literature, we consider strategies to further drive diversity and inclusivity in surgery. METHODS: Five hashtags used to engage in the gender disparity discourse were reviewed: #ILookLikeASurgeon, #WomenInSurgery, #MedBikini, #HammerItOut and #OperateWithRespect. Thematic analysis of tweets was undertaken to investigate the principal areas of disparity. Hashtag activity was explored to understand how hashtags can promote the movement. RESULTS: Five main themes of gender disparity were highlighted and explored through topical hashtags: culture of sexism, bullying, sexual harassment, patient and public perceptions, and disparity in pay and job opportunities. Female trainees experience microaggressions and bullying based on gender stereotypes, and there remain ongoing incidences of sexual harassment. The curriculum provides limited support for surgeons in training with caring responsibilities, resulting in pay disparity and under-representation. The cyclical nature of hashtag activity suggests that hashtags remain popular after their 'trending' period and this significantly increases the potential outreach of the tweets. CONCLUSIONS: The use of social media and tweets that include viral hashtags can aid in a wider understanding of the main areas of disparity that affect female surgeons. The inclusion of hashtags in tweets discussing gender equality in surgery vastly improved the online exposure of the movement by promoting engagement to new users. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to (1) describe health behaviors and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of Latina and Asian-American breast cancer survivors (BCS), (2) estimate possible culturally driven predictors of health behaviors and HRQOL, and (3) compare pathways for predicting health behaviors and HRQOL between the two groups.Materials and Methods: Secondary data were used to investigate health behaviors and HRQOL among 183 Latina and 206 Asian Americans diagnosed with breast cancer. The study methodology was guided by the health belief model and the contextual model of HRQOL. Structural equation modeling was used to test cultural predictors on health behaviors of BCS.Results: Asian Americans reported higher emotional and physical well-being scores than Latina-Americans. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated the adequacy of the two-factor model ("powerful others" and "sociocultural factors") in the cultural health belief construct for Latina and Asian-American BCS. In the structural model, Latinas and Asian Americans showed different pathways in the predicted relationships among the variables. For Latina-Americans, doctor-patient relationship was positively related to exercise, and in turn, influenced physical and emotional well-being. For Asian Americans, treatment decisions and the "sociocultural factor" were significantly related to stress management.Conclusion: This study adds to the existing literature in that no study has focused on cultural health beliefs and health behaviors between Latina and Asian-American BCS. Evidence that Latinas and Asian Americans varied in the patterns of cultural factors influencing health behaviors and HRQOL might lead to the development of culturally sensitive breast cancer interventions for promoting positive health behavior and ultimately increasing HRQOL. Although anti-VEGF therapy has shown promising results for many patients, there are several aspects of its application that have not been thoroughly investigated. One of these is the development and/or escalation of concurrent dry eye syndrome. Many patients undergoing treatment are already predisposed to dry eye disease due to their age and overall ocular health. As dry eye can have a substantial impact on quality of life, it has become increasingly apparent that the clinical signs and symptoms should be closely monitored and aggressively managed. This will allow for the optimization of patient comfort and visual potential. Here, we discuss the reasons why dry eye may develop during the course of repeated ocular anti-VEGF therapy, highlighting the key concerns about current practices and proposing possible solutions to improve the outcome for the patients. A retrospective study was undertaken to answer the following questions: Is the sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in Turner syndrome progressive? Can the occurrence of hearing loss be explained by the parental origin of the intact X chromosome? Twenty-four individuals recruited through the Turner Syndrome Society completed a questionnaire and submitted sufficient medical records to determine their otologic status. The majority (21/24) have had problematic otitis media (OM), and two thirds (16/24) have SNHL. In seven of the Turner subjects (age range: 12 to 51 years), gradual progressive SNHL began in late childhood or early adulthood. Molecular techniques showed no correlation between parental origin of the retained X chromosome and hearing status in 17 Turner subjects and at least one of their parents. SNHL and frequent OM appear to be independent variables that are both present in Turner syndrome. It is postulated that the presence of unpaired genes on the X chromosome may account for hearing loss and other phenotypic abnormalities seen in this syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Provide reference for surgeon and pathologist regarding expected yield from selective neck dissections. Quantify lymph nodes obtained from cadaver dissection based on current nodal classification and compare with clinical series.Study Design: 1. Quantification of lymph nodes at levels I-V harvested from human cadavers and correlation with nodal grouping for supraomohyoid (I-III) and lateral (II-IV) neck dissections. 2. Retrospective review of operative specimens from clinical neck dissections for lymph node quantity.Methods: 1. Twenty radical neck dissection specimens, harvested from 10 fresh human cadavers without evidence of head and neck cancer, were separated by nodal level for gross and microscopic examination by a pathologist. The quantity of nodes obtained per level for each specimen was tabulated. 2. Charts of patients treated with neck dissection for squamous cell carcinoma were reviewed and tabulated for type of dissection and number of lymph nodes reported.Results: In the 20 cadaver neck dissections, the average number of lymph nodes removed for levels I-V was 24, with 13 for levels I-III and 19 for levels II-IV. In the clinical review, 98 total neck dissections were included. In the six supraomohyoid dissections, an average of 20 lymph nodes (range, 14-26) were found, with an average of 30 (range, 15-43) in the 11 lateral compartment specimens. In 81 radical or modified radical dissections, an average of 31 nodes (range, 19-63) was reported.Conclusions: The number of lymph nodes removed in selective neck dissection should be comparable to that of the corresponding levels in radical neck dissection, provided that strict adherence to surgical boundaries is maintained. Extrauterine adenomyomas are rare tumors that present as uterus-like masses. Uterine adenomyomas can show interval changes according to hormone status. However, interval changes in imaging studies have not been reported in adenomyomas. We report a rare case of an extrauterine adenomyoma showing unique interval changes in magnetic resonance imaging. Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulceration and gastric carcinoma. Protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2), which is activated by trypsin, induced the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), cell proliferation and apoptosis in several cells. Previously, we found that H. pylori induces the expression of PAR-2, which mediates the expression of adhesion molecules integrins in gastric epithelial cells. In the present study, the role of PAR-2 on H. pylori-induced cell death was investigated by determining cell viability, DNA fragmentation, and the activation of MAPK in gastric epithelial AGS cells.Methods: AGS cells were cultured in the presence of H. pylori transfected with PAR-2 antisense (AS) oligonucleotide (ODN) or treated with a soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI). Viable cells and DNA fragmentation were determined by trypan blue exclusion assay and the amount of oligonucleosome-bound DNA, respectively. The activation of MAPK such as extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK), p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK), was assessed by Western blotting for phospho-specific forms of MAPK.Results: H. pylori-induced cell death and DNA fragmentation augmented in the cells transfected with PAR-2 AS ODN or treated with SBTI. The activation of MAPK, induced by H. pylori, were suppressed by transfection with PAR-2 AS ODN or treatment with SBTI.Conclusion: PAR-2, whose expression is induced by H. pylori, may prevent cell death and DNA fragmentation with the activation of MAPK in gastric epithelial cells. Non-paddy cropping systems play a significant role in food production. However, excessive nitrogen loss from non-paddy soils through nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization poses a significant challenge to environmental sustainability. In this study, microcosm and field-scale experiments were conducted to explore the potential for using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to mitigate nitrogen loss and greenhouse gas emissions, aiming at filling gaps in knowledge regarding the underlying biochemical mechanisms. The results show that input of micromolar H 2 O 2 from either artificial addition or natural rainwater into soils in the presence of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) could trigger Fenton-like reaction, which inhibited microbially mediated nitrification of soil-borne ammonium but did not affect the growth of the test crop plant (water spinach). In the absence of Fe 3 O 4 , input of rainwater-borne H 2 O 2 into non-paddy soils caused reduction in the emissions of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). There was a trend showing that the degree of reduction in N 2 O and CO 2 fluxes increased with increasing concentration of rainwater-borne H 2 O 2 . It was likely that microbially mediated reduction of iron oxides took place during rainfall events, providing Fe(II) that is needed for reaction with rainwater-borne H 2 O 2 , triggering Fenton-like reaction to inhibit the soil microbes that mediate production of N 2 O and CO 2 in the soils. Microalgae are widely recognized for their capacity to generate value-added products in a variety of sectors, including the pharmaceutical and food industries, bioenergy industries and wastewater industries. The quality of a microalga is significantly influenced by its proliferation. Along with growth, the biochemical profile may also vary based on the nutrient that is supplemented. The majority of the supplemented nutrients utilized are not in a functional state, as they are typically extracted in liquid form or pretreated prior to use. Parallel to numerous commonly applied pretreatment processes, including chemical, mechanical and biological, thermal pretreatment appears to receive less attention. Hence it is crucial to comprehend the potential for thermal pretreatment as well as its mechanism in militating the solid waste to release additional nutrients in order to enhance the biochemical profile of microalgae. The current review takes a closer look at the impact of various thermal pretreatments on solid waste on influencing microalgal performance in terms of their overall biochemical profiles such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Devising of materials that afforded dual applicability in decontamination and pollutant detection were still a towering challenge owing to the increasing flux of discharge toxic contaminants over the years. Herein, the NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles-loaded on cube-like SrTiO 3 (NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 ) composite was fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal approach providing remarkable photocatalytic treatment and electrochemical sensing of noxious pollutants in wastewater. The material traits of the fabricated composite were scrutinized by myriad characterization approaches. The NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 hybrid material demonstrated high surface area of 19.81 m 2 /g, adequate band gap energy of 2.75 eV, and prominent photoluminescence characteristics. In the presence of visible light, the NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 exhibited profound photocatalysis capability to eliminate sewage effluent-bearing chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTCH) with 88.6% COD removal in 120 min, outperforming other pure materials. Meanwhile, the toxicity examination of effluent, the possible degradation pathway of CTCH and the proposed photocatalysis mechanism were also divulged. More importantly, the glassy carbon electrode was modified with synergized NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 (NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 -GCE) was adopted for the precise quantification of Hydrazine (Hz). The NiFe 2 O 4 /SrTiO 3 -GCE obeyed first-order response for the Hz detection within the range of 1-10 mM: cyclic voltametric: limit of detection (LOD) of 0.119 μM with sensitivity of 18.9 μA μM -1 cm -2 , and linear sweep voltametric: LOD of 0.222 μM with a sensitivity of 12.05 μA μM -1 cm -2 . The stability and interference of modified electrode were also inspected. Background: Very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) continue to face high mortality risk influenced by the care quality of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Under-standing the impact of workload and regional differences on these rates is crucial for improving outcomes., Purpose: This study aimed to assess how the structural and staffing attributes of NICUs influence the mortality rates of VLBWIs, emphasizing the significance of the availability of medical personnel and the regional distribution of care facilities., Methods: Data from 69 Korean NICUs collected by the Korean Neonatal Network between January 2015 and December 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The NICUs were classified by various parameters: capacity (small, medium, large), nurse-to-bed ratio (1-4), and regional location (A, B, C). Pediatrician staffing was also analyzed and NICUs categorized by beds per pediatrician into low (≤10), medium (11-15), and high (≥16). The NICUs were classified by mortality rates into high-performance (1st and 2nd quartiles) and low-performance (3rd and 4th quartiles). Demographic, perinatal, and neonatal outcomes were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression to explore the association between NICU characteristics and mortality rates., Results: This study included 4,745 VLBWIs (mean gestational age, 28.4 weeks; mean birth weight, 1,088 g; 55.4% male) and found significant variations in survival rates across NICUs linked to performance and staffing levels. High-performing NICUs, often with lower bed-to-staff ratios and advanced care levels, had higher survival rates. Notably, NICUs with 2 rather than 1 neonatologist were associated with reduced mortality rates. The study also underscored regional disparities, with NICUs in certain areas showing less favorable survival rates., Conclusion: Adequate NICU staffing and proper facility location are key to lowering the number of VLBWI deaths. Enhancing staffing and regional healthcare equity is crucial for improving the survival of this population.

Background/aims: Ischemic colitis (IC), the most common ischemic syndrome affecting the gastrointestinal tract, results from a decreased blood supply to the colon. Persistent symptoms can lead to complications, necessitating surgery. This study assessed the clinical characteristics and risk factors for poor outcomes in IC., Methods: This retrospective observational study examined the medical records of 141 patients diagnosed pathologically with IC via surgery or colonoscopy at Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital between April 2004 and August 2023., Results: Eighteen (12.8%) and 123 (87.2%) patients were diagnosed by surgical biopsy and biopsy with colonoscopy, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified right-sided colon involvement, fever, and the absence of hematochezia as risk factors for the progression to surgery (odds ratio [OR]=5.924, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.009-34.767, p=0.049; OR=24.139, 95% CI 5.209-111.851, p<0.001; and OR=0.076, 95% CI 0.013-0.446, p=0.004, respectively). The in-hospital mortality was 5.7% (8/141), and the patients who died exhibited higher rates of shock. The median (interquartile range) hospital stay was 11 (1-219) days. Patients who had longer hospital stays (≥14 days) had a significantly higher rate of fever but a lower rate of hematochezia., Conclusions: A multidisciplinary approach is crucial for determining the need for surgery in patients with right-sided colon involvement, fever, or the absence of hematochezia.

Contamination of rice by arsenic represents a significant human health risk. Roxarsone -bearing poultry manure is a major pollution source of arsenic to paddy soils. A mesocosm experiment plus a laboratory experiment was conducted to reveal the role of rainwater-borne H 2 O 2 in the degradation of roxarsone in paddy rice soils. While roxarsone could be degraded via chemical oxidation by Fenton reaction-derived hydroxyl radical, microbially mediated decomposition was the major mechanism. The input of H 2 O 2 into the paddy soils created a higher redox potential, which favored certain roxarsone-degrading and As(III)-oxidizing bacterial strains and disfavored certain As(V)-reducing bacterial strains. This was likely to be responsible for the enhanced roxarsone degradation and transformation of As(III) to As(V). Fenton-like reaction also tended to enhance the formation of Fe plaque on the root surface, which acted as a filter to retain As. The dominance of As(V) in porewater, combined with the filtering effect of Fe plaque significantly reduced the uptake of inorganic As by the rice plants and consequently its accumulation in the rice grains. Backgroud: Menarche has a significant impact on the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS); however, studies in this area are insufficient. This study used large-scale school screening data to investigate the relationship between menarcheal age and AIS, especially the severity of scoliosis., Methods: Of 2,326,577 students who participated in school screening for scoliosis (SSS) in South Korea from 2001 to 2021, 38,879 girls with AIS, who experienced menarche, were included. Data including the patient's demographics, such as menarcheal age, Cobb angle, Risser stage, and the interval between menarche and the time of screening were retrieved from the SSS database. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to identify the changes in menarcheal age according to the birth year and to investigate the relationship between menarcheal age and each variable of interest., Results: Based on the birth year, the mean menarcheal ages in girls with AIS from 1988 to 2008 demonstrated a steadily decreasing trend over time ( r = -0.857, p < 0.001). Girls with AIS and late menarche demonstrated a higher Cobb angle at the time of screening ( r = 0.095, p < 0.001). Other variables did not significantly correlate with menarcheal age., Conclusions: Based on the SSS, a large-scale school screening dataset, menarcheal age in girls with AIS demonstrated an ongoing downward trend in the recent 20 years in South Korea. Notably, girls with AIS and late menarche had a higher Cobb angle at screening. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the etiology of hearing loss, including genetic variants, in individuals who underwent cochlear implantation (CI) in their teens to thirties. It also sought to analyze post-CI speech performance and identify prognostic factors affecting CI outcomes in this age group., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 421 cochlear implant patients at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, focusing on 63 subjects aged 10-39 years who underwent their first CI by a single surgeon between July 2018 and June 2022. The study included audiologic evaluation, molecular genetic testing, and analysis of speech performance post-CI. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25 and GraphPad Prism 7., Results: Among 63 participants (M:F, 24:39), nine underwent CI in their teens, 24 in their 20 s, and 30 in their 30 s. Most of them (40, 63.5%) had postlingual deafness. The study found that 65.2% (40/63) of subjects received a genetic diagnosis, with DFNB4 being the most common etiology (37.5%, 15/40). Post-CI speech evaluation showed an average sentence score of 80% across all subjects. Factors such as the onset of hearing loss, duration of deafness (DoD), and preoperative Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) significantly influenced CI outcomes. Notably, longer DoD was associated with poorer CI outcomes, but this did not affect individuals with postlingual hearing loss as much., Conclusion: The study concludes that in individuals aged 10-39 undergoing CI, the onset of hearing loss and preoperative SIR are critical predictors of postoperative outcomes. CI is recommended for those with postlingual hearing loss in this age group, irrespective of the DoD. The study highlights the importance of genetic factors especially DFNB4 in hearing loss etiology and underscores the value of the relatively easy-to-evaluate factor, preoperative SIR in predicting CI outcomes., (© 2024. Frequent detection of terbutaline in wastewater highlights its potential risks to human health associated in the environment. Exposure to terbutaline through contaminated water sources or food chain have adverse effects to human health. This work emphasized on the removal of terbutaline from wastewater using adsorption technology. Mechanochemically synthesized [Cu(INA) 2 ] metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and its magnetic composite ([Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF@Fe 3 O 4 ) are designed with higher specific surface areas and tailored features to accommodate the molecular size and structure of terbutaline. Thus, batch experiment has been conducted using the [Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF and [Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF@Fe 3 O 4 for the terbutaline adsorption. The adsorption efficiency achieved by the MOFs was 91.8% and 99.3% for the Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF and [Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF@Fe 3 O 4 respectively. The optimum for the adsorption study included terbutaline concentration of 40 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 5 mg/L, pH of 11, temperature of 25 °C and equilibrium time of 40 min. The kinetics and isotherms have been described by pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, while the thermodynamics revealed the exothermic and spontaneous nature of the process. The promising performance of the MOFs is manifested on the ease of regeneration and reusability, achieving adsorption efficiency of 85.0% and 94.7% by the Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF and [Cu(INA) 2 ]-MOF@Fe 3 O 4 , respectively at five consecutive cycles. The management of unknown weapons obtained from warfare, military operations, and terrorist situations requires a series of nondestructive testing processes. This management process, which is aimed at collecting information on the nature of the weapons, encompasses identification, processing, transportation, and storage of the obtained weapons. A lack of identification marks in acquired ammunition may indicate the potential presence of a chemical weapon. Therefore, nondestructive evaluation methods have been employed to identify unknown weapons. However, these methods rely on neutron- and radiation-based analyses, which require radiation-handling experts and specific protective facilities. Consequently, their application in this field is challenging. Herein, a nondestructive ultrasonic testing method, which can identify substances inside unknown weapons and optimize the verifiability of the state of the ammunition, was employed as an alternative method to overcome these limitations. The experimental system enabled quantitative and qualitative analyses of the internal chemicals by analyzing the time difference in acquiring the signals, particularly when the results indicate that the internal substance is a liquid. Background: Global food loss and waste have raised environmental concerns regarding the generation of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and methane gas), which directly contribute to climate change. To address these concerns, the present research aims to upcycle food waste into an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. Various parameters including pretreatment of food waste (i.e., autoclave and non-autoclave), concentration of food waste culture medium (i.e., 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100%), harvesting efficiency and biochemical compounds of Chlorella sp. microalgae were carried out., Results: Based on the preliminary findings, the highest biomass concentration obtained from 10% food waste culture medium in the autoclave for Chlorella sp., including strains FSP-E, ESP-31 and CY-1, were 2.869 ± 0.022, 2.385 ± 0.018 and 0.985 ± 0.0026 g L -1 , respectively. Since Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E exhibited the highest biomass concentration, this microalgal strain was selected to examine the subsequent parameters. Cultivation of C. vulgaris FSP-E in 100FW achieves a biomass concentration of 4.465 ± 0.008 g L -1 with biochemical compounds of 6.94 ± 1.396, 248.24 ± 0.976 and 406.23 ± 0.593 mg g -1 for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, respectively., Conclusion: This study shows that using food waste as an alternative culture medium for C. vulgaris FSP-E can achieve substantial biomass productivity and biochemical content. This study assessed the efficacy of granular cylindrical periodic discontinuous batch reactors (GC-PDBRs) for produced water (PW) treatment by employing eggshell and waste activated sludge (WAS) derived Nickel (Ni) augmented biochar. The synthesized biochar was magnetized to further enhance its contribution towards achieving carbon neutrality due to carbon negative nature, Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sorption, and negative priming effects. The GC-PDBR1 and GC-PDBR2 process variables were optimized by the application of central composite design (CCD). This is to maximize the decarbonization rate. Results showed that the systems could reduce total phosphorus (TP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 76-80% and 92-99%, respectively. Optimal organic matter and nutrient removals were achieved at 80% volumetric exchange ratio (VER), 5 min settling time and 3000 mg/L mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with desirability values of 0.811 and 0.954 for GC-PDBR1 and GC-PDBR2, respectively. Employing four distinct models, the biokinetic coefficients of the GC-PDBRs treating PW were calculated. The findings indicated that First order (0.0758-0.5365) and Monod models (0.8652-0.9925) have relatively low R 2 values. However, the Grau Second-order model and Modified Stover-Kincannon model have high R 2 values. This shows that, the Grau Second Order and Modified Stover-Kincannon models under various VER, settling time, and MLSS circumstances, are more suited to explain the removal of pollutants in the GC-PDBRs. Microbiological evaluation demonstrated that a high VER caused notable rises in the quantity of several microorganisms. Under high biological selective pressure, GC-PDBR2 demonstrated a greater percentage of nitrogen removal via autotrophic denitrification and a greater number of nitrifying bacteria. The overgrowth of bacteria such as Actinobacteriota spp. Bacteroidota spp, Gammaproteobacteria, Desulfuromonas Mesotoga in the phylum, class, and genus, has positively impacted on granule formation and stability. Colonoscopy is a key procedure for the early detection of colorectal cancer. Despite its importance, the discomfort associated with colonoscopy often requires sedation, and the ideal sedation regimen remains to be determined. In this prospective randomized controlled trial, patients scheduled for colonoscopy were randomly assigned to two different sedation protocols. Group A received a combination of midazolam and propofol, while group B was given midazolam and pethidine. The study analyzed data from 51 patients, with 23 in group A and 28 in group B. The incidence of adverse events was similar across both groups. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in cecal intubation times or total procedure durations. Notably, group A had a lower frequency of required postural changes (1.0±.7 vs. 1.5±0.7, p=0.02) and a reduced rate of manual compression (52.2% vs. 82.1%, p=0.02). There were no significant differences between the groups regarding subjective pain or overall satisfaction. Both sedation regimens were found to be safe and effective. Driven by the need for solutions to address the global issue of waste accumulation from human activities and industries, this study investigates the thermal behaviors of empty fruit bunch (EFB), tyre waste (TW), and their blends during co-pyrolysis, exploring a potential method to convert waste into useable products. The kinetics mechanism and thermodynamics properties of EFB and TW co-pyrolysis were analysed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The rate of mass loss for the blend of EFB:TW at a 1:3 mass ratio shows an increase of around 20% due to synergism. However, the blend's average activation energy is higher (298.64 kJ/mol) when compared with single feedstock pyrolysis (EFB = 257.29 kJ/mol and TW = 252.92 kJ/mol). The combination of EFB:TW at a 3:1 ratio does not result in synergistic effects on mass loss. However, a lower activation energy is reported, indicating the decomposition process can be initiated at a lower energy requirement. The reaction model that best describes the pyrolysis of EFB, TW and their blends can be categorised into the diffusion and power model categories. An equal mixture of EFB and TW was the preferred combination for co-management because of the synergistic effect, which significantly impacts the co-pyrolysis process. The mass loss rate experiences an inhibitive effect at an earlier stage (320 °C), followed by a promotional impact at the later stage (380 °C). The activation energy needed for a balanced mixture is the least compared to all tested feedstocks, even lower than the pyrolysis of a single feedstock. The study revealed the potential for increasing decomposition rates using lower energy input through the co-pyrolysis of both feedstocks. These findings evidenced that co-pyrolysis is a promising waste management and valorisation pathway to deal with overwhelming waste accumulation. Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) poses a significant threat to global aquaculture, prompting ongoing efforts to identify potential drug candidates for disease prevention. Coumarin derivatives have recently emerged as a promising class of compounds effective against rhabdoviruses, which severely impact the aquaculture industry. In this study, we assessed the anti-VHSV activity of umbelliferone (7-hydroxycoumarin) in fathead minnow (FHM) cells and olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Umbelliferone exhibited an EC 50 of 100 μg/mL by reducing cytopathic effect, with a maximum cytotoxicity of 30.9 % at 750 μg/mL. Mechanistic analyses via a time-course plaque reduction assay revealed that direct incubation with the virus for 1 h resulted in 97.0 ± 1.8 % plaque reduction, showing excellent direct virucidal activity. Pretreatment for 4 h resulted in a 33.5 ± 7.8 % plaque reduction, which increased with longer incubation times. Cotreatment led to a 33.5 ± 2.9 % plaque reduction, suggesting interference with viral binding, whereas postinfection treatment proved less effective. Umbelliferone was prophylactically administered to the olive flounder through short-term (3 days) and long-term (14 days) medicated feeding, followed by a 4-day postinfection period. Short-term administration at 100 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day resulted in the highest relative percent survival (RPS) of 56 %, whereas long-term administration achieved a maximum RPS of 44 % at 30 mg/kg bw/day. Umbelliferone administration delayed mortality at these doses. Additionally, umbelliferone significantly inhibited the expression of the VHSV N gene during viral challenge, with no observed toxic effects in fish up to an administration dose of 30 mg/kg bw/day for 28 days. Our findings suggest that the protective mechanism of short-term administration of 100 mg umbelliferone against VHSV infection may involve the overexpression of TLR2, MDA5, STAT1, and NF-κB at 24 h postinfection (hpi). IL-8 and IFN II expression was upregulated, whereas TNF-α, IL-1β, and IFN I expression was suppressed at 24 hpi. The upregulation of ISG15 at 48 hpi may contribute to the inhibition of VHSV replication, whereas the downregulation of Caspase 3 expression at 96 hpi suggests a possible inhibition of virus-induced apoptosis at later infection stages. Dyes are the most ubiquitous organic pollutants in industrial effluents. They are highly toxic to both plants and animals; thus, their removal is paramount to the sustainability of ecosystem. However, they have shown resistance to photolysis and various biological, physical, and chemical wastewater remediation processes. Membrane removal technology has been vital for the filtration/separation of the dyes. In comparison to polymeric membranes, inorganic and mixed matrix (MM) membranes have shown potentials to the removal of dyes. The inorganic and MM membranes are particularly effective due to their high porosity, enhanced stability, improved permeability, higher enhanced selectivity and good stability and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions. They have shown prospects in filtration/separation, adsorption, and catalytic degradation of the dyes. This review highlighted the advantages of the inorganic and MM membranes for the various removal techniques for the treatments of the dyes. Methods for the membranes production have been reviewed. Their application for the filtration/separation and adsorption have been critically analyzed. Their application as support for advanced oxidation processes such as persulfate, photo-Fenton and photocatalytic degradations have been highlighted. The mechanisms underscoring the efficiency of the processes have been cited. The persistent threat posed by chemical warfare agents (CWAs) necessitates the development of efficient and safe methods for their neutralization. In this study, we investigated the continuous neutralization of CWAs and their simulants using flow chemistry, which combines the benefits of safety, precise control over reaction parameters, and scalability. We focused on the integration of continuous-flow reactors to achieve controlled and rapid neutralization, thus addressing challenges such as the need for rapid reaction kinetics and the establishment of robust pathways for neutralization. Because the flow-chemistry approach can contribute significantly to the development of neutralization technologies for CWAs, we performed a thorough characterization in terms of reaction kinetics and neutralized product identification. The results demonstrated that the proposed continuous-flow-type neutralization reaction was faster and more efficient than batch-type neutralization reactions. Furthermore, in the early stages of the neutralization reaction, flow-type neutralization not only required less neutralizing agent than batch-type neutralization but was also faster. The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the treatment of wastewater has achieved increasing attention, as it enhances the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper explores the application of ANN-based models in WWTPs, focusing on the latest published research work, by presenting the effectiveness of ANNs in predicting, estimating, and treatment of diverse types of wastewater. Furthermore, this review comprehensively examines the applicability of the ANNs in various processes and methods used for wastewater treatment, including membrane and membrane bioreactors, coagulation/flocculation, UV-disinfection processes, and biological treatment systems. Additionally, it provides a detailed analysis of pollutants viz organic and inorganic substances, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, drugs, pesticides, dyes, etc., from wastewater, utilizing both ANN and ANN-based models. Moreover, it assesses the techno-economic value of ANNs, provides cost estimation and energy analysis, and outlines promising future research directions of ANNs in wastewater treatment. AI-based techniques are used to predict parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) in WWTP influent. ANNs have been formed for the estimation of the removal efficiency of pollutants such as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), BOD, and total suspended solids (TSS) in the effluent of WWTPs. The literature also discloses the use of AI techniques in WWT is an economical and energy-effective method. AI enhances the efficiency of the pumping system, leading to energy conservation with an impressive average savings of approximately 10%. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and durability of coil embolization for MCAB aneurysms by analyzing clinical and radiological results., Methods: From January of 2008 to June of 2018, we treated a total of 1785 aneurysms using coil embolization. The aneurysms were treated by both coiling and stent-assisted coiling. Among these cases, 223 MCAB aneurysms were analyzed retrospectively. Clinical and radiological assessments were conducted at admission, after treatment, at discharge, and at last clinical follow-up., Results: Coil embolization was performed on 223 MCAB aneurysms in 217 patients. Peri-procedural ischemic, hemorrhagic, and other complications within 30 days after coil embolization occurred at rates of 8.0 %, 8.0 %, and 2.0 %, respectively, in the ruptured group and at 2.9 %, 1.2 %, and 0 %, respectively, in the unruptured group. The overall morbidity and mortality rates associated with complications were 2.3 % and 2.0 %. The cumulative major recurrence rates were 5.1 % at 12 months, 7.1 % at 18 months, and 11.9 % at three years after coil embolization. The mean follow-up period was 33.27 ± 25.48 months. Independent risk factors for major recurrence after coil embolization for MCAB aneurysms were a ruptured aneurysm, initial incomplete occlusion, the aneurysm size, and the neck size., Conclusion: Coil embolization is a good alternative treatment option for MCAB aneurysms compared to surgical clipping. This review comprehensively addresses the developments and applications of polymer materials in optoelectronics. Especially, this review introduces how the materials absorb, emit, and transfer charges, including the exciton-vibrational coupling, nonradiative and radiative processes, Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), and energy dynamics. Furthermore, it outlines charge trapping and recombination in the materials and draws the corresponding practical implications. The following section focuses on the practical application of organic materials in optoelectronics devices and highlights the detailed structure, operational principle, and performance metrics of organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photodetectors, and organic transistors in detail. Finally, this study underscores the transformative impact of organic materials on the evolution of optoelectronics, providing a comprehensive understanding of their properties, mechanisms, and diverse applications that contribute to advancing innovative technologies in the field.

Dye decolorization through biological treatment techniques has been gaining momentum as it is based on suspended and attached growth biomass in both batch and continuous modes. Hence, this review focused on the contribution of moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) in dye removal. MBBR have been demonstrated to be an excellent technology for pollution extraction, load shock resistance, and equipment size and energy consumption reduction. The review went further to highlight different biocarrier materials for biofilm development this review identified biochar as an innovative and environmentally friendly material produced through the application of different kinds of reusable or recyclable wastes and biowastes. Biochar as a carbonized waste biomass could be a better competitor and environmentally friendly substitute to activated carbon given its lower mass costs. Biochar can be easily produced particularly in rural locations where there is an abundance of biomass-based trash. Given that circular bioeconomy lowers dependency on natural resources by turning organic wastes into an array of useful products, biochar empowers the creation of competitive goods. Thus, biochar was identified as a novel, cost-effective, and long-term management strategy since it brings about several essential benefits, including food security, climate change mitigation, biodiversity preservation, and sustainability improvement. Control of heat flow is critical for thermal logic devices and thermal management and has been explored theoretically. However, experimental progress on active control of heat flow has been limited. Here, we describe a nanoscale radiative thermal transistor that comprises of a hot source and a cold drain (both are ~250 nm-thick silicon nitride membranes), which are analogous to the source and drain electrodes of a transistor. The source and drain are in close proximity to a vanadium oxide (VO x )-based planar gate electrode, whose dielectric properties can be adjusted by changing its temperature. We demonstrate that when the gate is located close ( < ~1 µm) to the source-drain device and undergoes a metal-insulator transition, the radiative heat transfer between the source and drain can be changed by a factor of three. More importantly, our nanomembrane-based thermal transistor features fast switching times ( ~ 500 ms as opposed to minutes for past three-terminal thermal transistors) due to its small thermal mass. Our experiments are supported by detailed calculations that highlight the mechanism of thermal modulation. Influenza A virus causes numerous deaths and infections worldwide annually. Therefore, we have considered nanobodies as a potential treatment for patients with severe cases of influenza. We developed a nanobody that was expected to have protective efficacy against the A/California/04/2009 (CA/04; pandemic 2009 flu strain) and evaluated its therapeutic efficacy against CA/04 in mice experiments. This nanobody was derived from the immunization of the alpaca, and the inactivated CA/04 virus was used as an immunogen. We successfully generated a nanobody library through bio-panning, phage ELISA, and Bio-layer interferometry. Moreover, we confirmed that administering nanobodies after lethal doses of CA/04 reduced viral replication in the lungs and influenza-induced clinical signs in mice. Environmental pollution has been increasing since last decade due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation. Various kinds ofenvironmental pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), dyes, pharmaceuticals, phenols, heavy metals along with many organic and inorganic species have been discovered in the various environmental compartments which possess harmful impacts tox human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Thus, various efforts have been made through regulations, technological advancements, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of the pollution. However, finding suitable alternatives to mitigate their impacts remained a challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the advanced materials with unique features such as high porosity and stability which exhibit versatile applications in environmental remediation. Their composites with titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 ) have been discovered to offer potential feature such as light harvesting capacity and catalytic activity. The composite integration and properties have been confirmed through characterization using surface area analysis, scanning electron/transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and others. Thus, this work rigorously discussed potential applications of the MOF@TiO 2 nanomaterials for the CO 2 capture and effective utilization in methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetaldehyde, and other useful products that served as fuel to various industrial processes. Additionally, the work highlights the effective performance of the materials towards photocatalytic degradation of both organic and inorganic pollutants with indepth mechanistic insights.
