Abstract

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive facial-rejuvenation devices, such as nonablative radiofrequency (RF) and laser-assisted technology, are increasingly replacing higher-risk surgeries for face and body skin laxity. OBJECTIVE: We sought to review published information on noninvasive energy device safety and efficacy in aesthetic skin tightening, compare these with our experiences in Asian patients, and disseminate a consensus for optimizing microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) in Asian patients. METHODS: A broad, nonexhaustive, nonsystematic literature search of published studies indexed in PubMed was performed to compare selected energy technologies to MFU-V for noninvasive face and body skin tightening, in particular, among Asian patients. This was supplemented with internal documents to provide evidence and support arguments if no peer-reviewed data were available. RESULTS: We highlighted the differences between devices and platforms and identified factors requiring attention and caution. Due to the increase in new devices lacking strong supporting clinical evidence of both safety and efficacy in Asia, it is necessary to convene physicians with substantial experience in MFU-V and devise a consensus on Asian patient selection, treatment planning, and customization. CONCLUSION: Many platforms duplicate or claim similar technologies, efficacy, or safety without significant peer-reviewed scientific or clinical evidence. We showed that MFU-V satisfies this clinical imperative. Further, the patented DeepSEE(®) technology allows users to noninvasively "see" through the skin to ensure treatment precision, facilitate optimal skin lifting and tightening, and enhance patient comfort and safety. Therefore, we believe that MFU-V is the gold standard for nonsurgical lifting and skin tightening.

9. The protection factor of industrial half mask respirators when used in industry

Abstract

Industrial half mask respirators [defined as mask covering only the orinasal regions] are normally selected by the safety management for the employees. The choice is normally made on the basis of their theoretical ability to reduce the concentration of airborne contaminants below the Health and Safety Executive [HSE] published Threshold Limit Values [HSE 1977]. However in practice, the degree of protection provided by these respirators is not known and their protective values have long been suspected to be less than the scientific acclaim. In the past , several empirical studies have been carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the respirators but no attempt was made to determine and analyse the factors which cause the reduction of the protective values of respirators. This research project was carried out with an aim to determine the degree of respiratory protection achievable by the commercially available half mask respirators in the United Kingdom. Attempt was made to establish the factors which have direct influence on the protection of respirators. The research necessitated evaluation and development of methods for the accurate measurement of facial contours. Moire fringe photography from a projected coloured grid was the method of ultimate choice. Facial contour measurements were made on a total of 394 individuals mostly from industries which normally use respiratory protective devices. Of this number 184 also had measurements of the inward leakage of the face mask using a Sodium Chloride penetration method. Correlation was made between a number of facial dimensions and leakage values . Other variables which might influence leakage such as training in mask usage, facial hairs , increased respiratory effort [both by voluntary hyperventilation and exercise - induced] , head movements and differences between male and female users were also studied in relation to measured leakage values. During the course of the research, a series of comfirmatory experiments were carried out to provide the supportive evidence for the main line research. All the data obtained were subjected to the relevant statistical treatment. The tolerable level of leakage is 5 % [HSE]. The present study has shown that the leakage of the best mask is greater than this [range 0 % to 26 %]; but other mask can show leakage values of up to 47.9 %. The amount of face seal inward leakage can be attributed to a number of related factors namely the level of training and experience possessed by the subjects in the use of respirators, the presence of beards and the variation in the facial contours and dimensions.

Abstract

A servo-driven magnetometer table measuring offset from magnetic north has been developed by NASA to calculate payload azimuth required to point at a celestial target. Used as an aid to the study of gamma-ray phenomena, the high-altitude balloon-borne instrument determines a geocentric reference system, and calculates a set of pointing directions with respect to the system. Principal components include the magnetometer, stepping motor, microcomputer, and gray code shaft encoder. The single-chip microcomputer is used to control the orientation of the system, and consists of a central processing unit, program memory, data memory and input/output ports. Principal advantages include a low power requirement, consuming 6 watts, as compared to 30 watts consumed by the previous system.

Abstract

This paper describes the application of a single-chip microcomputer in a high-altitude balloon instrumentation system. The system, consisting of a magnetometer, a stepping motor, a microcomputer and a gray code shaft encoder, is used to provide an orientation reference to point a scientific instrument at an object in space. The single-chip microcomputer, Intel's 8748, consisting of a CPU, program memory, data memory and I/O ports, is used to control the orientation of the system.

Abstract

The water quality of Brunei Bay, Malaysia, subsequent to receiving iffluent from a pulp and paper mill, was monitored. Conventional water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, and biochemical oxygen demand were used as indicators to compare the present status of the bay water quality with that of the baseline. Generally, data gathered during the first 16 months of the mill operation did not indicate marked changes in the bay water quality. Levels of suspended solids, total organic carbons, and 1, 1-dichlorodimethyl sulfone in the bay water were used as indicators in the determination of dispersion pattern of the effluent in the coastal areas of the bay.
