23. Embedding Video Technology in Enhancing the Understanding of the Biology Concept of Breathing: A Brunei Perspective

Abstract

This study was carried out in an attempt to investigate the impact of embedding video technology into classroom lessons designed using technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework in improving students' conceptual understanding, focused on the concept of breathing. This study hypothesized that embedding video technology into classroom teaching would assist students in visualizing the dynamic biological processes, while improving students' conceptual understanding of the biology concept of breathing. This study sought to answer two research questions: (1) What are the students' misconceptions on breathing? (2) Does the integration of technology in lesson improve students' understanding of the concept? In this study, participants underwent four cycles of interventions, reflecting on the four knowledge dimensions of the TPACK framework (declarative, procedural, schematic and strategic). Mixed research method was employed in this study. Drawing-writing technique, pre- and post-tests and students' interviews were used to collect data. The quantitative data derived from the students' pre- and post-tests scores were analysed using SPSS paired sample t-test, while the qualitative data obtained from the drawing-writing technique and students' interviews were thematically analysed based on the content. Results of this study indicated that there was a significantly greater improvement in students' conceptual understanding of the biology concept of breathing after the interventions, thus demonstrating the positive impact of embedding video technology into classroom lessons planned using TPACK framework.

25. Reexamination of a multisetting Bell inequality for qudits

Abstract

The class of d-setting, d-outcome Bell inequalities proposed by Ji and collaborators [Phys. Rev. A 78, 052103] are reexamined. For every positive integer d > 2, we show that the corresponding non-trivial Bell inequality for probabilities provides the maximum classical winning probability of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-like game with d inputs and d outputs. We also demonstrate that the general classical upper bounds given by Ji et al. are underestimated, which invalidates many of the corresponding correlation inequalities presented thereof. We remedy this problem, partially, by providing the actual classical upper bound for d less than or equal to 13 (including non-prime values of d). We further determine that for prime value d in this range, most of these probability and correlation inequalities are tight, i.e., facet-inducing for the respective classical correlation polytope. Stronger lower and upper bounds on the quantum violation of these inequalities are obtained. 31. Three empirical essays on bank accounting

Abstract

This thesis presents new empirical evidence on three important aspects of financial reporting by banks. The thesis consists of an introductory chapter that explains how the three issues are related to each other, three empirical chapters and a final summary chapter. The first empirical chapter studies the effects of accounting conservatism on the pricing of syndicated bank loans. I provide evidence that banks more timely in loss recognition charge higher spreads for the same loan provision. I go on to consider what happens to this relationship during the financial crisis. During the crisis, banks more timely in loss recognition increase their spreads to a lesser extent than banks less timely in loss recognition. The policy implication is that banks more timely in loss recognition exhibit more prudent and less pro-cyclical debt pricing behaviour. The second empirical chapter examines the relationship between the value relevance of fair value gains and losses and bank risk in an international bank sample. One possibility is that, as risk increases, the scope for subjectivity in fair value estimates increases thereby potentially rendering the numbers less useful. However another possibility is that the relevance of faithfully reported fair value gains and losses increases as risk increases. The study provides evidence that the value relevance of fair value gains and losses is positively associated with bank risk prior to the crisis. During the crisis there is also evidence of a similar positive relationship, but it is not possible to draw firm conclusions for reasons discussed in the chapter. My research also shows that the fair value gains and losses of banks that elect to use the fair value option for assets that could have been accounted for using amortized costs are more value relevant and persistent. This study provides information to policy makers on the situations when fair values are most useful to investors. The third empirical chapter examines if the market rationally prices the loan loss provisions, and the reported fair value gains and losses of US banks. The chapter models the discretionary components of loan loss provisions and fair value gains and losses, and tests if the discretionary components are priced differently from their non-discretionary counterparts. The results provide little evidence that the market misprices operating cash flows, non-discretionary loan loss provisions, or fair value gains and losses (discretionary or otherwise). However there is evidence of significant mispricing of discretionary loan loss provisions. The lack of evidence on the mispricing of fair value gains and losses is consistent with the finding on the value relevance of fair value gains and losses in the second empirical chapter.

Abstract

The squeeze casting process is well known for its ability to produce castings with good integrity due to the high direct pressure application on the liquid metal during solidification. This concept has been used to squeeze infiltrate fibre preforms with liquid metal for metal-matrix composite (MMC) production. Squeeze casting employs fast cycle times to produce high integrity castings. The squeeze casting process is, however, limited in terms of shape complexity and flexibility (e.g. thin sections). One-offs or small production runs become very expensive to produce because of the complex nature and high cost of the die steel tooling.

Abstract

Despite improvements in radiotherapy, radioresistance remains an important clinical challenge. Radioresistance can be mediated through enhanced DNA damage response mechanisms within the tumour or through selective pressures exerted by the tumour microenvironment (TME). The effects of the TME have in recent times gained increased attention, in part due to the success of immune modulating strategies, but also through improved understanding of the downstream effects of hypoxia and dysregulated wound healing processes on mediating radioresistance. Although we have a better appreciation of these molecular mechanisms, efforts to address them through novel combination approaches have been scarce, owing to limitations of photon therapy and concerns over toxicity. At the same time, proton beam therapy (PBT) represents an advancement in radiotherapy technologies. However, early clinical results have been mixed and the clinical strategies around optimal use and patient selection for PBT remain unclear. Here we highlight the role that PBT can play in addressing radioresistance, through better patient selection, and by providing an improved toxicity profile for integration with novel agents. We will also describe the developments around FLASH PBT. Through close examination of its normal tissue-sparing effects, we will highlight how FLASH PBT can facilitate combination strategies to tackle radioresistance by further improving toxicity profiles and by directly mediating the mechanisms of radioresistance.
