Abstract

A small, undergraduate journalism program is the focus of the article's evaluation of different team teaching models of new media convergence curriculum. It is concluded that team teaching and teaching media convergence go together largely depending on administrative support and the collaboration of instructors along with keeping up with new skills and knowledge across media platforms.

Abstract

Mosquito-borne diseases contribute significantly to the global disease burden. High-profile elimination campaigns are currently underway for many parasites, e.g., Plasmodium spp., the causal agent of malaria. Sustaining momentum near the end of elimination programs is often difficult to achieve and consequently quantitative tools that enable monitoring the effectiveness of elimination activities after the initial reduction of cases has occurred are needed. Documenting progress in vector-borne disease elimination is a potentially important application for the theory of critical transitions. Non-parametric approaches that are independent of model-fitting would advance infectious disease forecasting significantly. In this paper, we consider compartmental Ross-McDonald models that are slowly forced through a critical transition through gradually deployed control measures. We derive expressions for the behavior of candidate indicators, including the autocorrelation coefficient, variance, and coefficient of variation in the number of human cases during the approach to elimination. We conducted a simulation study to test the performance of each summary statistic as an early warning system of mosquito-borne disease elimination. Variance and coefficient of variation were highly predictive of elimination but autocorrelation performed poorly as an indicator in some control contexts. Our results suggest that tipping points (bifurcations) in mosquito-borne infectious disease systems may be foreshadowed by characteristic temporal patterns of disease prevalence. Abstract

This paper takes a cultural studies approach to analyzing what could be termed the "cultural uptake" of a new commercial visual technology, the camera phone, in three key interdependent areas: user adoption, political economic contexts, and textual representation. Nokia's early investment and marketing of person-to-person picture messaging is juxtaposed to actual trends in user adoption and cultural appropriation, which in turn encouraged the cellular giant to deploy narrative practices based on perceived user needs and later focus on Internet-based services, such as online image sharing. Dispersed computing, in a variety of forms, formats, protocols and applications is already extending the Internet far beyond the home and workplace domains of desktop computers. The colonization of lived spaces by information and communication technology poses many challenges for how people think about the role of media, culture and technology in everyday life.

Abstract

This paper compares and contrasts corporate and policy narratives of advanced cell phone use by the citizens-consumers of the European information society. It begins an exploration of the dominant discourses of mobile media technologies and looks to information society narratives in the European Union context for some preliminary answers. I applied methods of qualitative textual analysis to select European Commission policy documents and commercial mobile texts from the web sites of Europe-based cellular giants Nokia and Siemens. How do these distinct narratives understand the impact of 3G mobile services on human agency and interaction? Who are the mobile citizens of these narratives and what services are they framed as desiring? I argue that many mobile narratives amount to political visions for a networked society of citizen-consumer-laborers. They are often narrow and one-sided visions of what mobile and pervasive ICTs should be designed to do, and how, why, and under what circumstances groups of users, such as individuals, corporations, and governments can and should use them. This paper offers a historical analysis of Disney's corporate exhibits at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, GE's "Carousel of Progress" and Ford's "Magic Skyway," in an attempt to consider their historical and cultural significance. Abstract

The article presents communication research on advertising. Using qualitative text analysis, Internet and print advertising for the cellular telephone manufacturer Nokia is evaluated for how the use of cellular telephones is presented. Cellular telephones are depicted as tools of social and cultural mobility, but of a very limited type. This is said to be a result of the limits of narrative within the context of marketing.
