A newly developed and tested survey instrument assessed the impact of individual beliefs, norms, and attitudes on the adoption of circular practices in the building industry, with a focus on reuse behaviors in renovation and construction. The findings indicate that while attitudes indirectly influence organizational intentions, norms, and perceived behavioral control directly relate to reuse intentions. These results highlight the critical role of psychological factors in promoting sustainable practices within the industry, emphasizing the need for further exploration of how these elements interact to advance environmental responsibility.

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF), the proportion of AF patients not receiving oral anticoagulation (OAC) and reasons for abstaining from OAC treatment. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of patients aged 18 years or older with an AF diagnosis on June 1st 2020 in Västernorrland County, Sweden. AF diagnosis was retrieved using the ICD10 code I.48, and medical records were reviewed for comorbidities and documented reasons to abstain OAC treatment. Results: Of 197 274 residents in Västernorrland County, 4.7% (9 304/197 274) had a documented AF diagnosis. Of these, 19% (1 768/9 304) had no OAC treatment, including 4.2% (393/9 304) with no indication, 2.5% (233/9 304) with a questionable and 2.5% (231/9 304) with a documented clear contraindication for OAC. In total 9.8% (911/9 304) were not treated with OAC despite indication and no reasonable documented contraindication, thus 90.8% (8 447/9 304) of all AF-patients were eligible for OAC treatment. Common reasons for abstaining treatment without reasonable contraindication were present sinus rhythm in 13.7% (125/911), perceived not an OAC candidate in 10.6% (97/911) and anemia in the past in 4.3% (39/911). Conclusions: In the population of Västernorrland County, a very high AF prevalence of 4.7% was found, of which just over 90% would theoretically benefit from OAC treatment. This is higher than previously reported and stresses the importance of stroke prevention in this large patient group.

Purpose The practical approaches to pursuing youth health and wellbeing are evolving with distinct approaches such as ‘co-creation’ and ‘health promotion’ gaining traction. However, there is also a critique arguing the need for radically attending to more relational approaches advocating for ‘relational welfare’ which put focus on the relationships between the youth and the welfare state. The relational conception of wellbeing also stresses the importance of non-human relating, acknowledging that human wellbeing is deeply interrelated to, and possible only within, healthy ecosystems and a living planet. The critique then proposes a shift towards relations of mattering and regeneration, from just reducing harm and sickness to focus on co-creating what is conducive to life, empowers, makes life meaningful, and worth living. The concept of “right relationship”, central to many indigenous cultures, might be an inspiration and appropriate term for this ideal of relating. It is a way of talking about living in a sustainable, loving or caring way with all living beings. But what does “right relationship” mean when co-creating youth wellbeing, exactly, and how might we design for it and cultivate it in practice? The purpose of this paper is to explore how a relational perspective on wellbeing and welfare can enrich the understanding of, and reveal new potentials for improving, youth involvement. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on an exploratory qualitative study of youth involvement in a Swedish Municipality. The main data source is interviews with politicians and civil servants in connection to an annual co-creative youth involvement event called the Democracy Day. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of participatory practices as a research methodology based on a reflexive analytical method. Examples will be derived from applying design thinking, storytelling and appreciative inquiry in a partnership project with three businesses. Two questions drive the reflexive analysis: How can participatory practice be applied as an empirical method that serves both data collection and organizational development? What can we learn from the application of storytelling, appreciative inquiry and design thinking to inform the development of research methods as part of the interactive design approach? This analysis contributes to the development of interactive research design as an approach to studying organizations in the VUCA landscape and the emergence paradigm in quality. Reimagining research methods in organisations as living organisms is conceptualized at the intersection between science and practice and contributes to the ongoing discussion about the use of interactive design (Ellström et al., 2020; Johnson & Wallo, 2020) generative scholarship (Pavez et al., 2021) as an applied-based research methodology.

Quality Management (QM) is currently facing a new landscape that makes the traditional emphasis on internal organizational excellence as well as many of the QM leadership control practices, increasingly insufficient. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to revitalizing and updating QM theory and practice for a living world by exploring an ecosystemic and regenerative approach. The paper presents initial results from a study of the phenomena of developing and improving together, across boundaries of organizations and actors, in two complex ecosystems. The results highlight four enablers and six wishes that could inform further exploration and future QM practice.

The purpose of a take-back system is to reduce usage of new natural resources by reusing discarded products. However, value stream actors often damage the discarded products by treating it as waste, and potential reuse value is lost in the value stream bringing discarded products to a reuse facility. The value loss can be reduced through reconfiguring collaboration and alignment of purpose between value stream actors. The study explores multiple product take-back value streams and identify alignment in collaboration as an enabler of low product damage and high value creation which are central to operationalization of circular economy.

The transformation towards increasing circularity in the building industry is slow. This qualitative study takes a holistic approach and gathers stakeholders and actors from one local building value chain to explore attitudes and intentions toward reuse. Using dialogic focus groups, enabling and hindering factors for reuse are studied by unlocking insights through listening to stories based on participants' own experiences with reuse and recycling of materials in building projects. Although the overall attitude towards reuse is positive in the studied group, several hindering attitudes are revealed through their stories and statements.

The pandemic has impacted organisations in new and unprecedented ways, illustrating the landscape that organisations and their leadership are increasingly facing. A landscape that many organizations and leaders find exceptionally hard to navigate, characterized by tensions and increasing levels of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). This new landscape is strongly driven by the systemic, complex, and interconnected sustainability challenges now urgently facing humankind. It is simply no longer an option to lead, operate and design the quality of systems, organizations, or products based on an incomplete economic, reductionist and mechanistic logic. Instead, the world is clearly calling for a leap in leading and teaming for quality. This leap would be into more of a living logic; a dialogic mindset; an emergence paradigm; a regenerative culture; and an integral stage of consciousness, leading and organising. Collaboration will then increasingly replace autonomy, empowerment will replace power, teamwork will replace individualism, self-organisation will replace rigid structures, and team intelligence will replace individual intelligence. The purpose of this paper is to identify, integrate, and advocate key elements for a progressive leap in team-based practices to achieve quality in the VUCA landscape. The paper is designed using a conceptual contribution framework. This framework includes making aware of what has been, or is missing, as well as pointing to aligned research areas that have failed to intersect. The paper presents conceptual findings concerning a progressive leap in team-based practices and what it might imply for how to team up for quality. The global COVID 19 pandemic created a challenge for organizations and schools worldwide that raised fundamental questions about the degree to which they are sustainable. Some schools struggled to adapt quickly to the needs of their stakeholders while others saw opportunity in the moment to create and innovate to generate new value for their customers and increase attractive quality. Sustainability can be defined as the responsiveness of a living system to change in its environment (Snyder and Snyder, 2021) and responsiveness as the quality of reacting quickly and positively. When faced with the pandemic, schools and organizations around the world were put to the test on how responsive they could be to changes in their complex environments and this turbulent time in history has forced educational leaders to ask how schools can create more sustainable practices. This paper presents a phenomenological study which examined what school leaders did to sustain attractive quality during the pandemic, specifically by evaluating responsiveness as a core capability. Findings were explored to better understand responsiveness and ask what lessons can be learned that will help inform a framework for developing sustainable quality in education.

Purpose Universities can potentially function as key actors, facilitators, and leaders in the needed transition towards a sustainable and regenerative future – both globally and locally. However, both the challenges ahead, as for instance articulated in the 2030 Agenda, and universities as systems, are inherently complex. That calls for new ways of leading change and organizational learning, in sharp contrast to traditional mechanistic ways of command-and-control. In short, it calls for creating space and conditions for the emergence of new patterns, relationships, mindsets, and actions that do not harm, but are conducive to life. The purpose of this paper is to contribute with knowledge about how to create space for the emergence of collective learning and action for sustainable development within a university. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on action research conducted in partnership with “the network for sustainable development” at Mid Sweden University. It centers around a two-day workshop with organizational leaders and employees from across the university. Findings The paper presents an applied approach for facilitating and creating space for emergence of collective learning and action for sustainable development. It is an approach using the 4D-cycle of Appreciative Inquiry as the foundation - refined, modified and complemented to match the context of a Nordic university. Originality/value The insights and practices in this paper could be seen as a bridge between traditional and modern approaches to leading and facilitating learning organizations – potentially giving the study a unique angle on a practical, widespread challenge: succeeding with leading change and organizational learning in complex living systems., The Kamprad Family Foundation project “Develop and improve together”

The distribution and population density of red deer (Cervus elaphus) are increasing in several regions of Europe. The deer may cause severe damage in commercial forestry and agriculture. Bark stripping is the main problem in forests, especially on Norway spruce (Picea abies), and is thought to mostly occur during winter when other forage is scarce. It has been suggested that an imbalance in the nutrient intake, and especially a diet including high amounts of easily-digestible macronutrients, such as agricultural crops, can lead to an increased urge to consume bark. Feeding on brassicas, for example rapeseed (Brassica napus) might have this effect. The aim with this study was to investigate the relationship between intake of rapeseed and bark stripping on Norway spruce by red deer during early spring. We did this by a controlled feeding experiment with four groups of captive red deer in southern Sweden. All groups were given spruce logs every week, while only two groups had access to freshly harvested rapeseed plants. In addition, influence of air temperature and forage nutritional composition was taken into account. Our results show that red deer bark stripping can be considerable not only during winter but also during spring green-up. We found no significant influence of rapeseed on bark stripping performed by the deer. However, at a threshold temperature, deer suddenly started to ingest large amounts of bark biomass, coinciding with a significant change in the bark's concentration of starch. We suggest that the lack of effect of rapeseed feeding can partly be explained by overshadowing effects caused by such seasonal changes of bark characteristics, and partly by the fact that the rapeseed plants in our study contained lower than expected concentrations of easily-digestible macronutrients (apart from protein).
