Floral rewards are important elements in plant–pollinator interactions and can play an essential role in the diversification of species. The identification of these rewards has been neglected in species of Tigridieae (Iridaceae), one of the few angiosperm groups to offer lipids, considered a specialized reward. We identify and characterize the secretory structures of floral rewards in Cypella and related genera (Calydorea, Catila, Herbertia, Onira and Kelissa). Our results reveal that there are trichomatic elaiophores in the tepals of Cypella, Kelissa, Onira and Herbertia and staminal nectaries in the connectives of the anthers of Cypella and Onira. There is an unusual combination of floral rewards in Cypella and Onira, demonstrating a unique pattern in Iridaceae of the American continent.

Evolutionary and ecological processes that influenced the assembly of the New World flora are best understood through investigation of spatio-temporal processes of specific lineages, but some groups still lack a historical overview. Here, we produced a well-sampled dated tree, reconstructed ancestral ranges and performed diversification analyses for Sisyrinchium (Iridaceae) to elucidate its evolution in the Americas. Eight molecular markers and samples representing its full geographical range and morphological diversity were used to estimate divergence times with a Bayesian relaxed clock with secondary calibrations. Ancestral range reconstruction under likelihood methods and diversification analyses were performed. Sisyrinchium originated in a broad range including the Andes and Mesoamerica in the Mid-Miocene. Diversification at high elevations occurred in the early diverging lineages, which feature the highest extinction rates. Increase in diversification rate was detected during the Pliocene/Pleistocene after the colonization of lower elevations. Later sympatric speciation in south-eastern Brazil was followed by movements to other regions, including a long-dispersal event to North America. Higher extinction rates were followed by movements to lower elevations, with periods of accelerated Andean orogeny and global temperature decrease. Our results indicate that palaeoclimate and changes in elevational range influenced diversification in Sisyrinchium.

Flowers producing oil resources and oil bee pollinators are involved in one of the most specialized pollination strategies. Various species of Iridaceae tribe Tigridieae are characterized by floral oil-secreting structures called elaiophores, but specialized plant–pollinator interactions among these taxa remain poorly understood. This study focused on four South American species of Tigridieae in three genera to assess the nature and extent of ecological specialization related to oil flower/oil bee interactions. Proportion, frequency and behaviour of specialist and generalist pollinators were investigated, and experiments on plant breeding system and observations on floral biology were conducted. Species of Arhysoceble (specialist bees) and Halictidae (generalist bees) formed the most representative taxonomic groups of pollinators. Even though ecological specialization for oil bees was detected in Cypella amplimaculata and Cipura sp., contrasting patterns of specialization were observed not only among the different plant species studied but also between populations of Herbertia pulchella and Cipura formosa. Self-incompatibility was reported for H. pulchella and Cipura sp., whereas C. amplimaculata and C. formosa presented a mixed-breeding system. However, all species were pollinator dependent and patterns of ecological specialization were not dependent of plant breeding system. This study revealed also that interactions between oil bees and elaiophores are not reliable predictors for efficient pollination.

Here we present a first contribution to the taxonomic revision of Sisyrinchium (Iridaceae: Iridoideae) for Southern Brazil. Sisyrinchium sect. Cephalanthum is one of the six sections in which the Brazilian species of the genus are classified, and the second largest in number of taxa. This monograph presents the taxonomic treatment of 22 taxa characterized by a unique set of morphological and molecular features, assigned to the section by phylogenetic studies, as well as the unplaced S. elegantulum, which is included here due to morphological similarity. A new status and a new synonym are proposed, and nine lectotypes and one neotype are designated. An identification key is provided, and species are described, accompanied by botanical illustrations, pictures, and distribution maps. In addition, geographical distribution, habitat, phenology, notes, and examined specimens are presented. Species of the section are mainly distributed in the South American biogeographic dominions of Chacoan and Parana.

The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.

Cypella Herb. is one of the largest genera of Tigridieae (Iridaceae: Iridoideae) with more than 30 species accepted by the World Checklist of Iridaceae. The current infrageneric taxonomy rests exclusively on morphological characters, which are more or less reliable because of their intraspecific variability, and the delimitation of various species recently described remains obscure. Therefore, multiple lines of evidence were used to assess species boundaries in a morphologically conserved group of five species, including various populations of Cypella pusilla and the closely related C. gloriana. Phylogenetic analyses based on ten genetic markers (eight plastid and two nuclear loci) and multivariate analyses of 38 qualitative and quantitative phenotypic characters were performed. Results revealed that species-level diversity was overestimated and intraspecific morphological variability of C. pusilla underestimated. Overall, our findings support the utility of combining genetic evidence and broad morphological sampling to validate and describe species using complementary approaches. Consequently, an updated taxonomic treatment of C. pusilla is presented, including an expanded description of the species.

A remarkable morphological similarity in natural populations of different groups of Sisyrinchium spp. (Iridaceae) makes classification of some species difficult. The present paper focused on two morphological categories of S. sellowianum (MC-I and MC-II) with distinct morphological traits. Morphological, cytogenetic, reproductive biology and genetic studies were performed, aiming to elucidate and better characterize such variation. The basic chromosome number established for the species was x = 9 and diploid and tetraploid populations were observed for MC-I, whereas MC-II showed only diploid populations. Different pollen morphologies were recognized in each morphological category. Based on pollination experiments, MC-I is out-crossing, whereas MC-II is selfing. The populations were highly differentiated (FST = 0.46, θB = 0.62). In MC-I, observed variation was greater within populations (69%) than among populations (31%), whereas in MC-II, 61% of the variation was among populations and 39% within populations. This study evidenced that the two morphological categories correspond to distinct and reproductively isolated species and that floral traits reflect their breeding system, with allogamous plants in MC-I and autogamous in MC-II. Furthermore, MC-II is unveiled as S. platycaule, a neglected taxon of Sisyrinchium in Brazil. The tools applied in this study were substantially able to check the identity of the two morphological categories as two different species and present the variation encountered in the taxa.

Premise of research. The population genetics approach is an important tool for determining boundaries in closely related plant species. Here, we adopt this approach to investigate the relationship between three species of Herbertia endemic to the Pampa biome, a complex grassland environment in southern South America.Methodology. A multianalytic approach based on population genetics was used to analyze 102 intersimple sequence repeat loci sampled in 11 populations (333 individuals) unequivocally attributed to Herbertia, aiming to test the boundaries between species. Controlled pollination experiments were performed to estimate the index of self-incompatibility (ISI), and the viability of pollen grains was estimated using the Alexander dye method, aiming to determine the breeding system in studied populations.Pivotal results. We have noticed an inadvertent error in our article entitled “Overlooked diversity in Brazilian Cypella (Iridaceae: Iridoideae): four new taxa from the Río de la Plata grasslands” (Phytotaxa 174 (1): 25–42).

A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil is presented with recognition of 16 species, two of them represented by two subspecies. An identification key to the taxa is provided and species are described and illustrated. New synonyms are indicated, and eight lectotypes, two epitypes and one neotype are designated. Results include distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, notes and examined specimens of all taxa, as well as comments on dubious and misused names. The resulting framework revealed that most of the Brazilian species of Cypella occur in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and in the Pampa Biome, although Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG) is the most species-rich biogeographic unit of the genus.

The polyploid species Herbertia lahue (Molina) Goldblatt is widespread in the grassland areas of southern America. In this study, genotypic and phenotypic variations among hexaploids and octoploids from H. lahue were assessed based on quantitative floral traits and ISSR markers. Additionally, gynoecium and breeding systems were analysed through anatomical analysis and hand-pollination experiments. Cytotypes are self-compatible, and the anatomy of the embryo sac remains similar in hexaploids and octoploids. With the present work, we aim to provide a better understanding of chromosome evolutionary trends among southern Brazilian species of Iridoideae. Chromosome numbers and genome sizes were determined for 21 and 22 species belonging to eight genera of Tigridieae and two genera of Trimezieae, respectively. The chromosome numbers of nine species belonging to five genera are reported here for the first time. Analyses of meiotic behaviour, tetrad normality and pollen viability in 14 species revealed regular meiosis and high meiotic indexes and pollen viability (> 90%). The chromosome data obtained here and compiled from the literature were plotted onto a phylogenetic framework to identify major events of chromosome rearrangements across the phylogenetic tree of Iridoideae. Following this approach, we propose that the ancestral base chromosome number for Iridoideae is x = 8 and that polyploidy and dysploidy events have occurred throughout evolution. Despite the variation in chromosome numbers observed in Tigridieae and Trimezieae, for these two tribes our data provide support for an ancestral base number of x = 7, largely conserved in Tigridieae, but a polyploidy event may have occurred prior to the diversification of Trimezieae, giving rise to a base number of x2 = 14 (detected by maximum-parsimony using haploid number and maximum likelihood). In Tigridieae, polyploid cytotypes were commonly observed (2x, 4x, 6x and 8x), whereas in Trimezieae, dysploidy seems to have been the most important event. This feature is reflected in the genome size, which varied greatly among species of Iridoideae, 4.2-fold in Tigridieae and 1.5-fold in Trimezieae. Although no clear difference was observed among the genome sizes of Tigridieae and Trimezieae, an important distinction was observed between these two tribes and Sisyrinchieae, with the latter possessing the smallest genome sizes in Iridoideae. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 177, 27–49.

Recent phylogenetic studies on Sisyrinchium strongly suggest that species classified in section Hydastylus and section Viperella belong to a single group of plants in recent adaptive radiation (Clade IV). These species neither present clear morphological differentiation among them nor show clear identification using DNA barcode markers. Thus, the main goal of this study was to develop a set of polymorphic microsatellite markers compatible for representative species of both sections to ensure variability that could be revealed by SSR markers. Therefore, microsatellite primers were isolated and characterized for Sisyrinchium palmifolium and S. marchioides. In addition, transferability of the developed primers was tested in Iridoideae, primarily in closely related species of Sisyrinchium. Sixteen microsatellite loci were developed from enriched genomic libraries, of which ten were polymorphic. GST values indicated higher differentiation among subpopulations of S. palmifolium than those from S. marchioides. Major transferability was obtained using primers isolated from S. marchioides. All primers exhibited higher rates of cross-amplification for species belonging to Clade IV of Sisyrinchium, as well as to the genera Calydorea and Herbertia. These developed microsatellite markers can be used as an efficient tool for characterization of genetic variability in species belonging to Iridoideae, as well as for studies on population dynamics, genetic structure, and mating system in other Sisyrinchium species.

Sisyrinchium micranthum is native to southern Brazil and shows a wide range of morphological variation in this region. This study was performed to compare individuals of this species in terms of traits such as morphology, chromosome number, meiotic behaviour, pollen viability and genetic diversity using inter simple sequence repeat markers. First, general morphological aspects were evaluated and plants were classified into three morphological categories (CI, CII and CIII) to analyse the cytogenetic and genetic data. Three chromosome numbers corresponding to three ploidies were found: 2n = 2x = 16, 2n = 4x = 32 and 2n = 6x = 48. All morphological types showed regular meiotic behaviour and high meiotic index values and pollen viability. CII is the most frequent in southern Brazil. The most common haploid chromosome number, n = 8, has not been reported previously in this species. The percentage of polymorphic loci ranged from 6.45 to 61.29% for each accession. Molecular and cytogenetic analyses indicate that some S. micranthum accessions may have more than one ploidy. International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sisyrinchium (Iridaceae: Iridoideae: Sisyrinchieae) is one of the largest, most widespread and most taxonomically complex genera in Iridaceae, with all species except one native to the American continent. Phylogenetic relationships within the genus were investigated and the evolution of oil-producing structures related to specialized oil-bee pollination examined. METHODS: Phylogenetic analyses based on eight molecular markers obtained from 101 Sisyrinchium accessions representing 85 species were conducted in the first extensive phylogenetic analysis of the genus. Total evidence analyses confirmed the monophyly of the genus and retrieved nine major clades weakly connected to the subdivisions previously recognized. The resulting phylogenetic hypothesis was used to reconstruct biogeographical patterns, and to trace the evolutionary origin of glandular trichomes present in the flowers of several species. KEY RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Glandular trichomes evolved three times independently in the genus. In two cases, these glandular trichomes are oil-secreting, suggesting that the corresponding flowers might be pollinated by oil-bees. Biogeographical patterns indicate expansions from Central America and the northern Andes to the subandean ranges between Chile and Argentina and to the extended area of the Paraná river basin. The distribution of oil-flower species across the phylogenetic trees suggests that oil-producing trichomes may have played a key role in the diversification of the genus, a hypothesis that requires future testing.

Species of Sisyrinchium from Southern Brazil represent 31% and 86% of the genus diversity throughout the Americas and the Brazilian territory, respectively. However, new species are still being discovered and three are presented here: S. pampeanum, from the Pampa Biome and S. diversicarpum and S. sectiandrum, from the Atlantic Forest Biome. The taxa are described, illustrated and taxonomic comments, conservation status and comparisons with related species are provided.

Iridaceae is one of the largest Asparagales families with over 2030 species. Besides a wide morphological variation, this family presents great karyological variation including many polyploid taxa. Sisyrinchium is restricted to the New World and it holds a large amount of cytological data. Despite its importance in providing critical evidence to understand processes involved in genome evolution, cytological data is lacking for most of South American species of Sisyrinchium . Therefore, the present work aims to identify and characterize chromosome evolutionary trends among Sisyrinchium taxa of sect. Viperella. Chromosome numbers and genome sizes (GS) were determined for 16 and 17 taxa, respectively, from sect. Viperella ; all reported here for the first time, except for S. alatum . Meiotic behavior, tetrad normality, pollen viability and morphology were also analyzed and revealed regular meiosis, high meiotic indexes and pollen viability (> 87%), except for Sisyrinchium sp. nov. aff. alatum (22.70%). The GS and chromosome number obtained were plotted onto a phylogenetic frame to identify transitions between character states and to locate where these transitions occurred throughout this group’s evolution. Based on our results, we suggest that the ancestral chromosome number for sect. Viperella is 2 n = 18 and two independent polyploidization events occurred. Lower DNA content (2.17 ? 2C ? 2.97 pg) was the ancestral condition from which six major events took place towards GS increase. Despite the stability in base chromosome number ( x = 9), evolutionary changes in karyotypes of this section involve primarily variation in DNA amount regardless of ploidy level, and secondly polyploidy and variation in chromosome size. Combining GS and chromosome number with molecular phylogeny, our data provides the first scenario for karyotype and genome evolution in Sisyrinchium , sect. Viperella , allowing us to suggest that mechanisms other than polyploidy were responsible for GS increase among these taxa.

An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora. Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.

DNA barcoding aims to develop an efficient tool for species identification based on short and standardized DNA sequences. In this study, the DNA barcode paradigm was tested among the genera of the tribe Sisyrinchieae (Iridoideae). Sisyrinchium, with more than 77% of the species richness in the tribe, is a taxonomically complex genus. A total of 185 samples belonging to 98 species of Sisyrinchium, Olsynium, Orthrosanthus and Solenomelus were tested using matK, trnH-psbA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS). Candidate DNA barcodes were analysed either as single markers or in combination. Detection of a barcoding gap, similarity-based methods and tree-based analyses were used to assess the discrimination efficiency of DNA barcodes. The levels of species identification obtained from plastid barcodes were low and ranged from 17.35% to 20.41% for matK and 5.11% to 7.14% for trnH-psbA. The ITS provided better results with 30.61-38.78% of species identified. The analyses of the combined data sets did not result in a significant improvement in the discrimination rate. Among the tree-based methods, the best taxonomic resolution was obtained with Bayesian inference, particularly when the three data sets were combined. The study illustrates the difficulties for DNA barcoding to identify species in evolutionary complex lineages. Plastid markers are not recommended for barcoding Sisyrinchium due to the low discrimination power observed. ITS gave better results and may be used as a starting point for species identification.

† Background and Aims Oil-producing flowers related to oil-bee pollination are a major innovation in Neotropical and Mexican Iridaceae. In this study, phylogenetic relationships were investigated among a wide array of New World genera of the tribes Sisyrinchieae, Trimezieae and Tigridieae (Iridaceae: Iridoideae) and the evolution of floral glandular structures, which are predominantly trichomal elaiophores, was examined in relation to the diversification of New World Iridaceae. † Methods Phylogenetic analyses based on seven molecular markers obtained from 97 species were conducted to produce the first extensive phylogeny of the New World tribes of subfamily Iridoideae. The resulting phylogenetic hypothesis was used to trace the evolutionary history of glandular structures present in the flowers of numerous species in each tribe. Hypotheses of differential diversification rates among lineages were also investigated using both topological and Binary-State Speciation and Extinction methods. † Key Results and Conclusions Floral glandular structures and especially trichomal elaiophores evolved multiple times independently in the American tribes of Iridoideae. The distribution pattern of species displaying glandular trichomes across the phylogeny reveals lability in the pollination system and suggests that these structures may have played a significant role in the diversification of the Iridoideae on the American continent.

Plants of the family Iridaceae are well represented in the grassland vegetation of southern Brazil, occurring in the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. Nevertheless, little is known about the taxonomy and evolution of Iridaceae species in southern Brazil. The main goal of this review is to compile published information about South American Iridaceae, and to discuss the evolution and genetic diversity of the family presenting our own research data in the light of the published literature. The main focus is on the genera Calydorea, Cypella, Herbertia, and Sisyrinchium. Aspects of reproductive system and of pollinator attraction are also discussed.

Sisyrinchium micranthum Cav. is a member of the family Iridaceae, which is distributed over the American continent. In Brazil, this species is found, not only in disturbed areas and coastal regions, but is also very common in urban centers, such as public parks, during the spring. Chromosome counts for North American specimens are 2n = 32 and 2n = 48, whereas in southern Brazil, there is a polyploidy series with three chromosome numbers, 2n = 16, 2n = 32, and 2n = 48. Population analyses using DNA molecular markers are inexistent for this species, in spite of its wide distribution and morphological variation. To study the genetic population structure of S. micranthum, five natural populations were accessed in a conservation park within the Atlantic Rain Forest Biome in southern Brazil. Here, the chromosome numbers 2n = 16 and 2n = 48 had already been described. Molecular analysis showed that the populations are highly structured with low gene flow among them. The population with 2n = 48 was genetically less variable than and distinct from the other populations. Population genetics in relation to cytogenetic data provided new insights regarding the genetic diversification and mating system of S. micranthum.

A floristic and structural survey of a natural grassland community was conducted on Morro do Osso, a granitic hill in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Structural data were surveyed in 39 one square meter plots placed over two major grassland areas. An accidental fire has occurred in one of the areas approximately one year prior to our survey, leading to further analysis of parameters differences between sites. The floristic list contains 282 species, whereas the structural survey has found 161 species. Families with highest accumulated importance values were Poaceae, Asteraceae and Fabaceae. The diversity and evenness indexes were 4.51 nats ind-1 and 0.86, respectively. Cluster analysis denoted two groups coinciding with the areas distinguished by the fire disturbance. A similarity analysis between our data and two other data sets from nearby granitic hills resulted in 28% to 35% similarity, with equivalent species-family distribution and many common dominant species, corroborating the concept of a continuous flora along the South Brazilian granitic hills. Os dados estruturais foram obtidos em 39 quadros de 1 m², dispostos em duas grandes áreas de campo. Uma queimada acidental ocorreu em uma das áreas, aproximadamente um ano antes do levantamento, propiciando a análise de diferenças entre os parâmetros dos dois sítios de amostragem. A lista florística contém 282 espécies e, no levantamento estrutural, foram encontradas 161 espécies. As famílias com maior valor de importância acumulado foram Poaceae, Asteraceae e Fabaceae. Os índices de diversidade e a equabilidade foram 4,51 nats ind-1 e 0,86, respectivamente. A análise de agrupamento identificou dois grupos nítidos, que coincidem com os locais atingidos ou não pelo fogo. Uma análise de similaridade entre os dados obtidos e dois outros conjuntos de dados de morros graníticos vizinhos resultou em 28% a 35% de similaridade, com uma equivalente distribuição de espécies por família e muitas espécies dominantes comuns, corroborando a noção de continuidade da flora ao longo dos morros graníticos no sul do Brasil.

Foi realizado o levantamento florístico das espécies de Cyperaceae do Centro de Pesquisa e Conservação da Natureza PróMata (CPCN Pró-Mata), Rio Grande do Sul. O local de estudo está situado no município de São Francisco de Paula, na região fisiográfica dos Campos de Cima da Serra. Foram efetuadas cinco expedições de coleta e encontradas 42 espécies, distribuídas em oito gêneros. São apresentadas a lista das espécies, chaves de identificação nos níveis genérico e específico e fotomicrografias em Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura dos aquênios de cada espécie. A floristic survey of Cyperaceae species at the Centro de Proteção e Conservação da Natureza Pró-Mata (CPCN Pró-Mata), Rio Grande do Sul was performed. The study area is located in São Francisco de Paula municipality, in the physiographic region of the Campos de Cima da Serra. In five collecting expeditions, 42 species were found at the study site, distributed on eight genera. A list of the species, analytical keys for genera and species, as well as scanning photomicrographs of the achenes are presented.

Leaf appearance rate and phyllochron are related variables which play a central role in forage production. Phyllochron is the time interval between the appearance of successive leaves and varies according to a number of environmental factors, among which temperature is the most important. The experiment was conducted in natural pasture with the aim of testing phyllochron variation under different seasons, herbage allowances, and topographic positions. Marked tillers were used to define the phyllochron, establishing a relationship between the number of leaves produced against thermal time during the sampling period. The time (expressed in °C) needed for the emergence of a leaf is equal to 1/b, where b is the slope coefficient of the regression. The lines for the season combinations, herbage allowances and topographic positions sampled were compared. Under Spring and Summer conditions, the phyllochrons for P. notatum and C. selloana were 156°C and 238°C respectively, regardless of treatment. A taxa de aparecimento de folhas (TAF) e o filocrono são conceitos associados, que exercem forte influência na produção de forragem. O filocrono é o intervalo de tempo entre o aparecimento de duas folhas sucessivas acima do pseudocaule e varia de acordo com alguns fatores ambientais, sendo a temperatura o fator determinante. O experimento foi conduzido em pastagem natural em Eldorado do Sul, RS, com o objetivo de testar a variação no filocrono em diferentes estações do ano, níveis de oferta de forragem (NOF) e posições topográficas (PT). Para a definição do filocrono, foram amostrados perfilhos marcados e estabeleceu-se a relação entre número de folhas produzidas e a soma térmica do período amostral. A soma térmica (em °C) necessária para que a planta emita uma folha é igual a 1/b, sendo b o coeficiente angular verificado na regressão. As retas obtidas para as combinações entre estações, NOF e PT foram comparadas. Em condições de primavera e verão, se obteve filocrono de 156°C para P. notatum e de 238°C para C. selloana, independentemente dos tratamentos avaliados.

Three new species and one subspecies of Cypella are described for Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil: Cypella altouruguaya from northern RS, C. amplimaculata widely distributed across the state and C. rivularis restricted to southern RS, in grassland streams of the Pampa biome. Cypella hauthalii subsp. minuticristata is found in a central area of Rio Grande do Sul. The different taxa are described, illustrated and compared with related species. The resulting taxonomic framework shows that most of the species described for Cypella occur in the Río de la Plata grasslands, with various infrageneric taxa characterised by a high level of endemism, especially in the Subtropical Grasslands of Southern Brazil.

Sisyrinchium antemeridianum and S. flabellatum are two new species of Sisyrinchium sect. Hydastylus that occur in the high altitude grasslands of Southern Brazil, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Sisyrinchium antemeridianum can be distinguished from similar species by the conspicuous rhizome with remnants of old leaves and flowers with larger tepals and longer, connate filaments. Sisyrinchium flabellatum has a distinctive equitant phyllotaxis and a lax inflorescence of numerous flowers with small, typically reflexed tepals. Both species are endemic to the Highlands of Southern Brazil. Morphological descriptions, illustrations and ecological information for both plants are presented.

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar modificações ocorridas na vegetação em uma área de campo natural, após oito anos sem influência de pastoreio. A área situa-se na Estação Experimental Agronômica da UFRGS, no município de Eldorado do Sul, RS, onde foram realizadas amostragens em 1984 e 1992. Dezesseis unidades amostrais permanentes de 0,25 m² foram utilizadas para verificar a presença e o valor de cobertura das espécies, pela escala de Daubenmire. São apresentados os valores de freqüência e cobertura absolutas (FA e CA, respectivamente) das espécies de Gramineae, Compositae, Rubiaceae, Leguminosae, Umbelliferae e Cyperaceae nos levantamentos de 1984 e 1992. O trabalho evidenciou a relação entre a forma biológica das espécies predominantes e os estados pastejado ou excluído. Em Gramineae, espécies rasteiras, estoloníferas ou rizomatosas (Paspalum notatum, Axonopus affinis e outras), características da área pastejada, foram substituídas por plantas de hábito cespitoso (Andropogon lateralis, Elyonurus candidus e outras), capazes de sombrear e sobrepujar as de baixo porte. Espécies de compostas e rubiáceas, de um modo geral, apresentaram uma redução em FA e pouca alteração em CA. As leguminosas apresentaram principalmente um aumento em FA, mantendo a CA praticamente constante. As umbelíferas destacaram-se pelo aumento da CA em metade de suas espécies. Ocorreu o surgimento de 25 e o desaparecimento de 42 espécies em 1992. The aim of this study was to evaluate modifications after eight years without grazing in a native grassland area, located at the Estação Experimental Agronômica - UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, RS. Vegetation surveys were done in 1984 and 1992. Sixteen permanent sample quadrats (0.25 m²) were established and presence of species and cover-abundance values according to the Daubenmire scale were recorded. Absolute frequencies and cover values (AF and AC, respectively) in 1984 and 1992 are presented for Gramineae, Compositae, Rubiaceae, Leguminosae, Umbelliferae and Cyperaceae species. The study showed the relation between the growth forms of the most abundant species and the grazed and ungrazed situations. Creeping, stoloniferous and rhizomatous species of Gramineae (Paspalum notatum, Axonopus affinis and others) were conspicuous when the area was under grazing, being replaced by tussock-type plants (Andropogon lateralis, Elyonurus candidus and others) able to dominate and shade out small understory herbs, when excluded. Compositae and Rubiaceae species showed a reduction in AF and few changes in AC. Leguminosae species had an increase in AF, presenting almost constant values for AC. Half of the Umbelliferae species presented an increase in AC in the second survey. Twenty five species appeared and 42 vanished in 1992.
