A novel 2D Janus monolayer Mn2P2S3Se3 with room-temperature antiferromagnetic order and a large out-of-plane piezoelectricity is theoretically predicted.

Background Abnormal expression of cuproptosis-related regulators is closely related to the development of various cancers. However, the role of cuproptosis-related SLC31A1 (solid carrier family 31 member 1) gene, as a high-affinity copper transporter, in the prognosis and immunotherapy of multiple different cancers remains unclear.Methods Based on the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases, the expression level of SLC31A1 was analyzed in tumors and normal tissues, and the survival value of SLC31A1 was evaluated by Cox regression analysis. Then, we explored the relationship between SLC31A1 expression and genetic alterations, DNA methylation, and immune cell infiltration. And the biological function of SLC31A1 in pan-cancer was further clarified by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). Additionally, in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD), we deeply explored the relationship between SLC31A1 expression and clinicopathological stages, immune infiltration types, RNAss, DNAss, and tumor microenvironment scores, and the specific biological process of SLC31A1 was investigated through GO enrichment analysis.Results The expression level of SLC31A1 varied considerably with cancers, and its high expression had significant prognostic value in LIHC, KIRC, THYM, UCS, ACC, LGG, MESO, BLCA, TGCT, KICH, COAD, STAD, PCPG, and BRCA. SLC31A1 expression was significantly correlated with genetic alterations, DNA methylation, and immune cell infiltration. GSEA further indicated that SLC31A1 was mainly related to immune regulation signals in various cancers. In COAD, SLC31A1 expression was remarkably related to RNAss and immune scores, and GO analysis revealed that SLC31A1 was mainly associated with DNA and RNA replication, activity, and binding.Conclusion Our research first systematically revealed the potential value of SLC31A1 in prognosis and immunotherapy in multiple cancers, especially in COAD, suggesting that it will become a new target in the prognosis and treatment of cancers.

We present a set of ground-motion prediction equations for the horizontal components of the strong-motion records from shallow-crustal and upper-mantle earthquakes in Japan. We used a reasonably large dataset from earthquakes with a moment magnitude (Mw) over 4.9 and a reliable earthquake category determined by the tectonic location of earthquakes up to the end of 2012. The modeling of source and site effects in this study is similar to that by Zhao, Zhou, et al. (2016); a two-segmented model for the magnitude scaling function hinged at Mw 7.1 and site-period-based site classes were used as the site effect proxy that accounts for the effect of the nonlinear soil response. We used two types of multisegmented geometric attenuation functions with the distance break points based on the distributions of within-event residuals versus source distance. We found that the geometric attenuation functions with three distance break points (70, 130, and 220 km) for the shallow-crustal earthquakes and with two distance break points (90 and 150 km) for the upper-mantle events improved the model performance significantly. The first two break points for the shallow-crustal events are similar to those for the attenuation of the Fourier spectrum due to Moho reflection, but the corresponding coefficients between these spectra differ significantly. For the upper-mantle events, the geometric attenuation coefficient is somewhat surprisingly close to −1.0 for the first segment, 0.0 for the second segment, and −0.5 for the third segment at many periods, because these values are close to the classic attenuation rates of the Fourier spectrum for shallow-crustal events but having different distance break points. Moho reflection is not usually present in the ground motions from deep events, and we can only provide a plausible explanation; a future study is warranted for a theoretical explanation.

Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is characterized by pulmonary arterial remodeling mainly due to apoptosis resistance and excessive proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase (PDE)-5 inhibitor. Some reports have shown that sildenafil exerts protective effects against PPHN. However, the function of sildenafil in PPHN and the underlying molecular mechanisms are not clear. Here, we revealed that sildenafil effectively suppressed hypoxia-induced PASMC proliferation and apoptosis inhibition (P0.05, respectively). Also, sildenafil obviously reduced ventricular hypertrophy, and inhibited pulmonary vascular remodeling in the PPHN model (P0.05, respectively). Moreover, sildenafil treatment significantly attenuated the induction of Notch3 and Hes1 induced by hypoxia treatment (P0.05, respectively). Furthermore, overexpression of Notch3 abolished the reduction of PASMC proliferation and promotion of PASMC apoptosis induced by sildenafil under hypoxia (P0.05, respectively), whereas knockdown of Notch3 had an opposite effect (P0.05, respectively). Together, our study demonstrate that sildenafil shows a potential benefit against the development of PPHN by inhibiting Notch3 signaling, providing a strategy for treating PPHN in the future.

BackgroundGestational duration has a non-negligible impact on eye diseases. However, the long-term role of cytokines on the causal relationship of maternal gestational age on offspring visual impairment remains unclear.MethodsWe perform a lifecourse-network Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the causal relationships among maternal gestational duration (from EGG and iPSYCH, N=84,689), neonatal/adult cytokines (from the NHGRI-EBI Catalog, N=764/4,618) and adult eye diseases (from FinnGen consotium, N=309,154) using summary-level data from large genome-wide association studies. Multiplicative random effects inverse variance weighted (IVW) and multivariable-IVW method are the main analysis methods and the other 15 pleiotropy-robust methods, weak IV-robust methods and outliers-robust methods are performed as auxiliary methods.ResultsWe find that maternal gestational age (early preterm birth, preterm birth, gestational duration and postterm birth) has causal relationships with 42 eye diseases. Specially, four neonatal cytokines: TNF-α, IL10, GROA and CTACK, as well as four adult cytokines: CTACK, IL10, IL12p70 and IL6.26 are mediators in the causal relationships between early preterm birth and preterm birth to 8 eye diseases. However, after adjusting for these mediators, null direct causal effect of early preterm birth and preterm birth on 8 eye diseases can be found. In addition, there is no mediator in the causal relationships from gestational duration and postterm birth to eye diseases.ConclusionThe influences of maternal gestational duration on the offspring eye diseases through cytokines are long-term and lifecourse.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection of the central nervous system in children, with a high mortality rate of 12 % - 35 %. Two-thirds of bacterial meningitis cases in Europe and the United States are caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. In this study, the overexpression of miR-340 and the knockdown of NOD2 could attenuate the microglial inflammation induced by Streptococcus pneumoniae and improve the nerve function in Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced meningitis mice. In contrast, inhibited miR-340 and overexpression of NOD2 had the opposite effects. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and recovery experiments showed that miR-340 could reduce the microglial inflammation induced by Streptococcus pneumoniae and improve the neurological damage caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae with regulating the expression of NOD2. MiR-340 and NOD2 may become the site of targeted therapy for Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis.

Combining a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) material, MnPS3 and a 2D ferroelectric material, Sc2CO2, we propose 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure multiferroics to realize strong magnetoelectric coupling, which is important for designing high-performance magnetoelectric devices. By using first-principles simulations, it is found that the transition from an AFM state to a ferromagnetic (FM) state of a MnPS3 layer could be realized by reversing the polarization direction of a Sc2CO2 layer. We further reveal that such strong magnetoelectric effects originate from the large inter-layer charge transfer due to the competitive interaction between the difference of the interface work functions between MnPS3 and Sc2CO2 and the strong electronegativity of the O atom interface in the Sc2CO2 layer. Our results suggest a feasible scheme for constructing 2D vdW heterostructure multiferroics with very strong inter-layer magnetoelectric coupling effect.

To study the difference in the wind-induced response of the transmission tower caused by the downburst and the well-conditioned wind field, this paper uses the harmonic superposition method to simulate the well-conditioned wind field and the downburst wind field. The wind-induced responses of the transmission tower under the two wind farms are obtained and compared through the analysis. The wind-induced responses caused by the two wind fields on the transmission tower are quite different, and the downburst can cause a larger wind-induced response.

Tunneling electroresistance (TER) is the change in tunneling resistance induced by ferroelectric polarization reversal in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs), and how to achieve a giant TER has always been a central topic in the study of FTJs. In this work, by considering the NaTiO3/BaTiO3/LaTiO3 junction with asymmetric polar interfaces as an example, we propose a novel scheme to realize a giant TER based on the reversible partial metallization of ferroelectric barrier upon the switching of ferroelectric polarization. Density functional theory calculations indicate that high on-state and low off-state conductances are obtained and the TER ratio is as high as 3.20 × 108% due to the reversible partial barrier metallization, which leads to a great difference in the effective tunneling barrier widths. The reversible partial barrier metallization, accompanied by the ferroelectric polarization reversal, is driven by the parallel or anti-parallel alignment of the depolarization electrical field of the ferroelectrical barrier and a strong built-in electrical field cooperatively contributed by the asymmetric polar interfaces and the difference in the work functions of the two leads. The findings suggest a feasible scheme for constructing promising high performance FTJ memory devices by combining both asymmetric polar interfaces and substantially different work functions.

Using panel data from China’s publicly listed companies (PLCs), this paper investigates the relationship between acquisitions and executive compensation. Empirical analysis based on panel regression reveals that acquisitions lead to a significant increase in executive compensation. Further evaluation, using disaggregated data, shows that acquisitions have a significant and positive impact of executive compensation of state-owned PLCs, but its effect on executive compensation paid by private-owned PLCs is statistically insignificant. The state-owned PLCs give less weight to financial performance compared with private-owned PLCs. State ownership and shareholding concentration increase the executive compensation, which gives rise to a principal–principal type problem. Moreover, using the generalized propensity score (GPS) methodology, which allows one to control for the presence of the selection bias, we find that the compensation-increasing effect of acquisitions for the top executive managers is higher than the effect for the top board directors. Finally, once the selection bias is taken into account, we find that acquisitions have almost no effect on the compensation of lower level executive managers and board directors, which suggests the presence of a principal–agent type problem in the two-tiered governance structure of the Chinese PLCs.

The effect of emotion on memory often leads to the trade-off: enhanced memory for emotional items comes at the cost of memory for background information. Although this effect is usually attributed to overt attention during encoding, Steinmetz and Kensinger (2013) proposed that such an effect might also be related to post-stimulus elaboration. Based on previous different viewpoints, we used the directed forgetting paradigm to further explore the effect of post-stimulus elaboration on the memory trade-off. In the meantime, we also tested the roles of background valence and item salience (high salient items were placed in the centre of backgrounds while low salient items were placed in the periphery of backgrounds) in modulating the memory trade-off. Our results showed that there was a memory trade-off when backgrounds were neutral, whereas this was no longer the case when backgrounds were negative. This indicated the memory trade-off might be affected by background valence. Meanwhile, we found post-stimulus elaboration contributed to selective memory enhancement for backgrounds, while item salience enhanced item memory performance in the memory trade-off. These findings suggest the emotion-induced memory trade-off may be a complex memory effect, which can be influenced by different factors to varying degrees.

We present a damping modification factor (DMF) model for the total acceleration spectrum from subduction slab earthquakes. The model can be used for scaling a 5% damped design spectrum not associated with a particular earthquake that occurred in a subduction slab. The DMF model uses site-period-based site classes as the site-effect proxy. DMF models were constructed based on the spectrum for 13 damping ratios and 34 spectral periods; the DMF values can be calculated for any damping ratio between 1% and 30% and at any spectral period between 0.03 and 5.0 s. At moderately long and long spectral periods, the DMF values for acceleration spectrum are similar to or less than those for the displacement spectrum for a damping ratio of less than 5%, whereas the DMF values for the acceleration spectrum are similar to or larger than those for the displacement spectrum when the damping ratio is more than 5%. The standard deviations for acceleration and displacement spectra are similar at short or moderately short spectral periods, but those for the acceleration spectrum are about twice those for the displacement spectrum at long spectral periods. All standard deviations decrease linearly with increasing damping ratios in the logarithm scale when the damping ratio is less than 5% and increase linearly with increasing damping ratios in a logarithm scale for the other damping ratios. A set of simple functions for calculating various standard deviations is presented. The spectra from the Zhao, Jiang, et al. (2016) study for slab events scaled by the DMF values for other damping ratios vary smoothly with spectral period and have a trough at short spectral periods for a large event, a short distance, and high damping ratios. The relatively large between-event and within-site standard deviations are from the source and path effects.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferrovalley materials, displaying coexistence of spontaneous spin and valley polarizations, have recently attracted significant attention due to their potential for applications in the fields of spintronics and valleytronics. However, unfortunately, to date only a few 2D ferrovalley materials exist. Here, first-principles calculations predict a 2D Janus ferrovalley material lanthanum bromiodide (LaBrI). It is found that LaBrI is a stable ferromagnetic electride, whose magnetic moment originates mainly from the interstitial anionic electrons. The magnetic transition temperature of LaBrI monolayers is estimated to be far beyond room temperature, and a sizable magnetic anisotropy with easy in-plane magnetization is also present. Most importantly, LaBrI monolayers exhibit a large valley polarization due to the concurrent broken space- and time-reversal symmetries, with the calculated valley polarization reaching up to 59 meV. This value is comparable to that of the ferrovalley materials reported to date. Intriguingly, the inequivalent Berry curvature at the two valleys takes opposite values, giving rise to an anomalous valley Hall effect, where a valley current with an accompanying net charge Hall current may be induced.

For surveys in areas with difficult access, ground-based electromagnetic (EM) systems are difficult to operate, time-consuming, and expensive, whereas airborne EM (AEM) systems are unsafe and uneconomic for small survey areas. We have developed a new frequency-domain airborne electromagnetic (FAEM) system called the ground-airborne frequency-domain EM (GAFEM) system to achieve rapid data acquisition in complex terrains with high safety and low cost. The system consists of a grounded electrical source and an airborne receiver carried by an unmanned rotorcraft. The grounded electrical source transmits a [Formula: see text] pseudorandom series obtaining signals at [Formula: see text] frequencies in one flight, which can maintain the resolution without reducing efficiency. The airborne receiver based on the unmanned rotorcraft makes the system flexible, convenient, and economical to operate in areas with difficult access. The system can conduct surveys in far- and non-far-field regions and can obtain the apparent resistivity to present a quick overview of the subsurface structure. To demonstrate the GAFEM system’s effectiveness and practical detection potential, we have performed two field surveys that revealed the shallow structure with tunnels and the deep structure at source-receiver distances of 3 and 6 km, respectively. The GAFEM system effectively revealed the apparent-resistivity difference with a sufficient investigation depth at large source-receiver distances. Thus, the system can be extended to various important applications for rapid surveys or deep investigations in areas with difficult access.

The ground-airborne frequency-domain electromagnetic (GAFDEM) survey is a fast method to detect the deep underground structure in areas with difficult access. However, the suspended coil sensor in the survey system experiences attitude changes, which inevitably yield attitude error on the measured magnetic field and result in false apparent resistivity imaging. Due to the separated system structure, the attitude error in GAFDEM survey is significantly different from that in traditional airborne helicopter frequency-domain electromagnetic survey. In order to improve the detection accuracy, a modified iterative algorithm is proposed to suppress the attitude error for apparent resistivity imaging. Both simulation and practical experiment are conducted to verify the usefulness of the correction method. The simulation results indicate that the correction procedure is important and effective to reduce the attitude error in layered earth model. The field experiment results show that the corrected apparent resistivity imaging section is more consistent with the high-density resistivity topography and more reasonable than the uncorrected apparent resistivity imaging result obtained by conventional method. Consequently, the proposed suppression approach can reduce the attitude error to obtain more accurate apparent resistivity imaging results in GAFDEM survey, which may effectively promote the developments and applications of GAFDEM method and systems.

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) composed by sandwiching a thin ferroelectric layer between two leads have attracted great interest for their potential applications in nonvolatile memories due to the tunnel electroresistance (TER) effect. So far, almost all FTJs studied focus on adopting three dimensional (3D) ferroelectric materials as the tunnel barrier. Recently, many two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials with in-plane or out-of-plane spontaneous polarization have been theoretically proposed or even fabricated, providing a new type of candidate as the tunnel barrier in FTJs. However, very little has been known about whether such 2D ferroelectric materials may lead to an excellent TER effect. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that a giant TER effect of around 623%, which is comparable to 3D FTJs, can be realized through the ferroelectric tunnel junction constructed with the 2D ferroelectric materials BiP and B/N-doped graphene. The analysis of the effective potential and electronic structure indicates that the large TER ratio arises from the unsymmetrical screening effects of the B/N-doped vertical van der Waals graphene/BiP leads. Our findings demonstrate the great potential of novel application of 2D ferroelectric BiP in FTJs.

Using data over the 2009–2016 period, this paper examines the impact of star power on box office revenues in China. Unlike most existing studies, we measure star power as a continuous variable based on the number of registered fans of movie stars on the most popular microblogging website in China (Sina Weibo). We also examine the impact of star power on box office revenues through three important channels (industry recognition, internet media evaluation, and internet media buzz). Estimation of log-linear specifications shows that directors play an important role in the financial success of movies in China. The direct effect of star power on the financial success of movies is negative, and the same applies to the direct effect of internet media evaluation. The indirect quality effect of star power through industry recognition is positive but insignificant. The marginal effect of industry recognition becomes significantly positive only when the level of star power reaches the second quartile of its distribution. The indirect signal effect of star power through internet media evaluation is negative and statistically significant. However, the indirect signal effect through internet media buzz is positive and significant at all levels of star power and this effect dominates the negative direct effect of star power once it reaches a threshold level. Endogeneity-corrected estimation results confirm that the total effect of star power on box office revenues in China is positive and significant. The Chinese movie industry, which appears to be dominated by low-quality movies, can benefit from further reforms.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials (FEMs) and their application in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) have attracted a great deal of attention during the past several years due to their great potential in nonvolatile memory devices. Particularly, the all-2D FTJs, which have only atomic-layer thickness, have been demonstrated to show very high tunnel electroresistance (TER) ratio. Nevertheless, to better integrate with the present semiconductor technology, it is necessary to consider metal contacts in the construction of FTJs with 2D FEMs. However, due to the unknown interaction between traditional metals and 2D FEMs, it is not clear whether ferroelectricity still persists when the 2D FEMS are in contact with metals and whether the corresponding FTJs exhibit high TER effect as demanded for memory devices. To probe this, we construct FTJs with top contact between Au(010) and ${\mathrm{In}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$, a 2D FEM with out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization. By density functional calculations combined with a nonequilibrium Green function technique, we find that not only the ferroelectricity still persists in the metal/FEM contact, but also a giant TER ratio as high as ${10}^{4}%$ is achieved. The giant TER arises from the change of the metal/FEM contact from a Schottky type to an Ohmic type accompanying with the ferroelectric polarization reversal. In the meantime, the tunnel barrier height between Au(010) and ${\mathrm{In}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ is zero, which means good ability of electron injection from metal to semiconductor and low contact resistance. Our study suggests that, by properly selecting the metal materials, giant TER ratio and high performance can be achieved in FTJs constructed with 2D FEMs and metal contacts.

Two-dimensional (2D) $A$-type antiferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials with either intralayer ferromagnetic and/or intralayer antiferromagnetic coupling have sparked great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics. By first-principles design we predict that a heterostructure formed by sandwiching the 2D $A$-type antiferromagnet, $2\mathrm{H}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{V}{\mathrm{Se}}_{2}$, between the 2D out-of-plane ferroelectric, ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{2}{\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$, presents a semimetal band structure with a half-metallic conduction band. The mechanism giving rise to this peculiar structure cooperatively originates from the strong built-in electric field of the double-layer ferroelectric ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{2}{\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$, and from the charge transfer selectively occurring only at one interface. Based on the so-designed ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{2}{\mathrm{CO}}_{2}\text{/}\mathrm{V}{\mathrm{Se}}_{2}$ multiferroic heterostructure, two concepts for nonvolatile memory devices are proposed, in which two states (``1'' and ``0'') are realized by switching the polarization direction of the ferroelectric layers. These results demonstrate that the combination of 2D ferroelectrics and $A$-type antiferromagnetic vdW materials provides not only a fascinating way to achieve half-metallicity in 2D materials, but also a route to the design of new types of nonvolatile ferroelectric memory devices.

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a stable two-dimensional semiconductor, namely tin dioxide ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$. By investigating its dynamical, thermal, and mechanical properties, we find that ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$ monolayer is an auxetic material with a large in-plane negative Poisson's ratio. Furthermore, our results show that ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$ is an indirect-gap semiconductor with a band gap in the region of 3.7 eV and an extremely high electron mobility, $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{3}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{V}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Interestingly, the band structure of ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$ presents double Mexican-hat-like band edges in the valence bands near the Fermi level. Due to such a unique band feature, a ferromagnetic phase transition takes place with a half-metallic ground state that can be induced by hole doping within a very wide concentration range. Such a magnetic phase can be well explained by the Stoner mechanism. A peculiar feature of the magnetic state is the presence of large magnetocrystalline anisotropy that can switch from in-plane to out-of-plane upon hole doping. Hence, ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$ monolayer can be tuned to be either an $XY$ magnet or an Ising one, with a magnetic critical temperature above room temperature at proper hole concentrations. These findings demonstrate that the predicted phase of ${\mathrm{SnO}}_{2}$ is a rare example of $p$-type magnetism and a possible candidate for spintronic applications.

This study investigates the association between income and unmet need for personal assistance with daily activities and introduces four policy options for financial support for the unmet need, particularly the public long-term care insurance (LTCI) system. Using the logit model and random forest algorithm, we find that household income is a significant contributing factor to unmet need. Moreover, we find that older adults in the low-income group have a higher level of unmet needs. China's policy experimentation shows that financial support can be provided in the policy arrangements of LTCI financing with low individual contributions and benefits with a high reimbursement rate.

Mastocytosis is an accumulation of clonal mast cells within tissues and it is most commonly caused by an activating mutation in the KIT gene. In this study, we report a neonatal case who presented with diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) at birth. In China, nine other cases of neonatal-onset CM have been reported in the literature since 2006. In those cases, diffuse CM and urticaria pigmentosa were the main symptoms, and mutations in exon 17 at codon 816 in KIT were identified.

Acute lung injury (ALI) severely impairs gas exchange and results in high mortality. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) plays a crucial role in diverse lung diseases;however, the expression and function of IGFBP-3 in ALI remain unclear. In the present study, mice were injected with lipopolysaccharide to establish ALI, and IGF and IGFBP3 expression was measured using ELISA, western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining. Mice with ALI were then treated with recombinant human IGFBP-3 (rhIGFBP-3), and treatment was evaluated using survival analysis, histological staining analysis, and inflammatory cytokine expression in lung tissues and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). The expression of NF-κB and VEGF was also measured using western blotting and ELISA in ALI mice. Our results demonstrated the upregulation of IGF expression in lung tissues and BALF of ALI mice, accompanied by downregulation of IGFBP-3. Administration of rhIGFBP-3 prolonged the survival time and attenuated LPS-induced lung injury. The expression of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IFN-γ both in lung tissues and BALF decreased after rhIGFBP-3 treatment, whereas IL-10 expression increased. These results suggest that rhIGFBP-3 inhibits the expression of NF-κB and VEGF in lung tissues. Collectively, our study demonstrates a protective role of rhIGFBP-3 in ALI by regulation of lung inflammation.
