Objective. To investigate the effectiveness of moxibustion combined with Chinese medicine in the treatment of spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type gastroparesis by meta-analysis and to provide the clinical basis for its treatment. Methods. A computer search of eight databases was performed for published and unpublished randomized controlled trials on moxibustion for spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type stomach pain from domestic and international clinical trial centers. The study was divided into a combination of a moxibustion and Chinese medicine group and a regular Western medicine group, and the outcome indicators were “effective” and “ineffective.” The relative risk (RR) was used as the effect indicator for the dichotomous data, and the meta-analysis was performed using Reviewer Manager 5.4 and Stata17.0 software. Results. A total of 8 randomized controlled studies with 729 patients were included, and all studies were analyzed for comparability of patients’ baseline information, with no statistically significant differences found ( P > 0.05 ). The meta-analysis results showed that the pooled effect size RR for the eight studies was 1.24 (95% confidence interval 1.16–1.32), and the statistical significance test was Z = 6.69 ( P < 0.05 ), indicating that the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion. The meta-analysis concluded that the efficacy of moxibustion combined with Chinese medicine for the treatment of spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type gastroparesis was superior to that of regular Western medicine, but more high-quality studies are needed to confirm this finding.

Aggressive B-cell lymphoma is one of the most common types of blood malignancy. Robust delivery of genes of interest into target cells, long-term gene expression, and minimal risk of secondary effects are highly desirable for translational medicine including gene therapy and studies on gene function. However, efficient gene delivery into viral or nonviral B-lymphoma cells remains a challenge. Here, we report a strategy for inducing foreign gene expression in B-lymphoma cells by using a vector based on the novel parainfluenza virus PIV5-L (a strain isolated from B cells) that enabled us to study and control the function of a gene product within B-lymphoma cells. Using enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) as a reporter, we successfully rescued PIV5-L and established a one-step system to generate PIV5-L virus-like particles (L-VLPs) with efficient delivery into a broad spectrum of susceptible B-lymphoma cell lines, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)- or Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)-transformed B-lymphoblastoid cells. Similar to lentiviral vector, the L-VLP highly expressed exogenous genes and remained stable for long periods without obvious negative effects on cell viability. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the PIV5-L-based system provides a potential new strategy for the delivery of desirable genes and the treatment of cancer. IMPORTANCE B-cell lymphoma is a common aggressive neoplastic disorder of lymphocytes. Delivery of genes of interest into B cells, particularly virus-mediated B-lymphoma cells, is still a challenge. In this study, we report that a system (L-VLP) based on the parainfluenza virus PIV5-L strain isolated from B cells had highly expressed exogenous genes and remained stable without obvious cell toxicity, which provides a potential new strategy for gene delivery and treatment of B-cell cancer.

Stannous oxide (SnO) and stannic oxide (SnO2) are both important wide-band-gap semiconductors. To study the conductive mechanism in detail, high quality epitaxial films are essential. Here we propose a simple method to grow high quality epitaxial films of either stannous oxide or stannic oxide on an r-plane sapphire substrate by using pulsed laser deposition with a metallic tin target. The valence state of tin is controlled by tuning the oxygen pressure during the deposition procedure. Metal tin impurities and the transition phase of Sn3O4 are avoided and the growth windows from stannous oxide to stannic oxide are confirmed. For single-crystalline SnO epitaxial film, a rocking curve half-width of 0.22° is obtained, which is better than the 0.46° of that on a YSZ substrate. The minimum roughnesses achieved were 0.37 nm for the SnO2 epitaxial film and 0.84 nm for the SnO epitaxial film. The epitaxial relationship between SnO and the r-sapphire substrate was determined to be SnO [ 1 ¯ 1 0 ] //sapphire [ 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 ] and SnO [1 1 0]//sapphire [ 1 0 1 ¯ 1 ] . For SnO2, the epitaxial relation is SnO2 [0 1 0]//sapphire [ 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 ] and SnO2 [ 1 ¯ 0 1 ] //sapphire [ 1 0 1 ¯ 1 ] . The band schematics, deduced by combined XPS valence band spectroscopy and optical transmittance spectroscopy, indicated p-type bands of SnO and n-type bands of SnO2. Raman spectroscopy is suggested to be a superior fingerprint of SnO single-crystalline quality, due to its greater sensitivity than X-ray diffraction.

Two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin oxides are crucial for modern quantum electronic devices. However, the well-controlled growth of 2D oxide materials is highly challenging. In this work, ultrathin single-crystal SnO epitaxial films were achieved on r-sapphire by pulsed laser deposition. The quasi-2D SnO films have thicknesses ranging from 3.4 to 25.4 nm, allowing observation of quantum confinement effects in the optical bandgap. The critical thickness where the films relax in plane is around 19 nm. Below 19 nm, the films are strained compressively in plane and tensilely along the c-axis. Quantum confinement effects are observed by UV-IR spectroscopy for the optical transition at the direct bandgap. By fitting Brus equation, the reduced effective mass is deduced to be 0.137 ± 0.016 me. The exciton radius and binding energy are 4.62 ± 0.61 nm and 10.8 ± 1.2 meV, respectively. These parameters are crucial for the design and application of SnO-based quantum devices.

The existence of an intermediate phase of tin oxide was first reported in 1882. However, its stoichiometry and its crystal structure have been dubious and heavily debated ever since, despite a multitude of structural investigations. We show that Raman spectroscopy combined with ab initio theory offers a viable alternative for structure determination in cases where diffraction studies are inconclusive. We unambiguously identify the intermediate phase as ${\mathrm{Sn}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ and rule out the other likely candidate, ${\mathrm{Sn}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. We assign the one-phonon Raman signals of ${\mathrm{Sn}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ to the mode symmetries of the corresponding point group ${C}_{2h}$ and confirm that $P{2}_{1}/c$ with 14 atoms per unit cell is the space group of ${\mathrm{Sn}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$.

Since Feb, 2013, more than 100 human beings had been infected with novel H7N9 avian influenza virus. As of May 2013, several H7N9 viruses had been found in retail live bird markets (LBMs) in Guangdong province of southern China where several human cases were confirmed later. However, the real avian influenza virus infection status especially H7N9 in Guangzhou remains unclear. Therefore, a cross-sectional study of avian influenza in commercial poultry farms, the wholesale LBM and retail LBMs in one district of Guangzhou was conducted from October to November, 2013. A total of 1505 cloacal and environmental samples from 52 commercial poultry farms, 1 wholesale LBM and 18 retail LBMs were collected and detected using real-time RT-PCR for type A, H7, H7N9 and H9 subtype avian influenza virus, respectively. Of all the flocks randomly sampled, 6 farms, 12 vendors of the wholesale LBM and 18 retail LBMs were type A avian influenza virus positive with 0, 3 and 11 positive for H9, respectively. The pooled prevalence and individual prevalence of type A avian influenza virus were 33.9% and 7.9% which for H9 subtype was 7.6% and 1.6%, respectively. None was H7 and H7N9 subtype virus positive. Different prevalence and prevalence ratio were found in different poultry species with partridges having the highest prevalence for both type A and H9 subtype avian influenza virus. Our results suggest that LBM may have a higher risk for sustaining and transmission of avian influenza virus than commercial poultry farms. The present study also indicates that different species may play different roles in the evolution and transmission of avian influenza virus. Therefore, risk-based surveillance and management measures should be conducted in future in this area.
