Abstract The teaching objectives of traditional approaches in higher education emphasize mostly students’ mastery of knowledge and have insufficient directionality to social needs. In this study, we developed a BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objectives, Pre-assessment, Participatory Learning, Post-assessment and Summary) teaching model combined with the OBE (Outcome Based Education) concept to enhance the teaching outcomes. Firstly, based on the graduation requirements and professional training objectives of students, we divided the course objectives into three dimensions (knowledge, ability and quality), and further specified into index points. Then, the teaching content of each chapter was set to correspond with the index points. Finally, the BOPPPS teaching model was used to meet each requirement. Clinical biochemistry testing course was used as a model to assess the effects of the teaching reform. After the class, the teaching effect was analyzed based on the questionnaire surveys from the students and their scores of both the chapter and final examinations. The results showed that compared with the traditional approach, the BOPPPS teaching model combined with the OBE concept has demonstrated a notable enhancement in student engagement, and significant improvement of their mastery of knowledge, application skills, and problem-solving abilities. The examination scores of the BOPPPS group were markedly higher than those of the traditional group. Moreover, the difference between the two groups diverse assessment scores was much bigger than that between the two group examination scores. Our study indicates that the BOPPPS teaching model combined with the OBE concept is a highly effective teaching model for enhancing the learning effectiveness of students.

Volvariella volvacea is a mushroom known for its high palatability and nutritional value. However, it is susceptible to spoilage thus making it challenging to preserve and keep fresh after harvest, resulting in constraints in long-distance transportation and long-term storage. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using irradiation and sodium dehydrogenate (SD) as a preservative in the preservation process of V. volvacea. The effects of three treatments of 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation (B), 0.04% SD (C), combined with 0.04% SD and 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation (A) on the postharvest freshness of V. volvacea were investigated. The assessment indices for V. volvacea, including appearance, browning rate, weight loss, respiration rate, MDA content, antioxidant enzyme activities, vitamin C (Vc), and soluble protein content, were measured and compared. The three treatments were compared to determine the changes in storage time over 7 days post-harvest. The results demonstrated that the hardness of the fruiting body exhibited a significant increase of 81.19%, 97.96% and 168.81% in comparison to the control, B and C, respectively, following the application of the treatment A. Compared to the control group, the soluble protein content was significantly increased by 20.28%. Respiration intensity and browning rate were significantly lower in the control treatment, decreasing by 35.07% and 45.49% respectively. On the 6th day of storage, the activities of SOD and POD increased by 81.06% and 73.71%, respectively, compared to the control, which significantly delayed the senescence of the fruiting bodies. The Vc content was significantly increased by 50.27%, 133.90%, and 101.39% in treatment B, which received 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation alone, compared to the control, treatment A, and treatment C, respectively. The treatment C alone significantly reduced respiratory intensity and MDA variables by 39.55% and 31.01%, respectively, compared to the control. The findings can provide theoretical references and technical support for extending the preservation period of V. volvacea after harvesting by using irradiation and sodium dehydrogenate as a preservative.

Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on the quality of life (QOL) and mental health (MH) of patients with cardiovascular disease (CVDs). Web of Science, Medline, Embase, Cochrane (CENTRAL), CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and China Science and Technology Journal databases were searched from their date of establishment to July, 2023. A total of 5798 articles were screened, of which 25 were included according to the eligibility criteria. The weighted mean difference (WMD) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used to analyze data from the same and different indicator categories, respectively. The fixed-effects model (FE) or random-effects model (RE) combined data based on the between-study heterogeneity. There were no statistically significant differences regarding QOL, physical component summary (PCS), mental component summary (MCS), and MH, including depression and anxiety levels, between the HIIT and MICT groups [SMD = 0.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 0.18–0.61, Z = 1.06, P = 0.290; SMD = 0.10, 95% CI − 0.03–0.23, Z = 1.52, P = 0.128; SMD = 0.07, 95% CI − 0.05–0.20, Z = 1.13, P = 0.25; SMD = − 0.08, 95% CI − 0.40–0.25, Z = − 0.46, P = 0.646; WMD = 0.14. 95% CI − 0.56–0.84, Z = 0.39, P = 0.694, respectively]. HIIT significantly improved PCS in the coronary artery disease (CAD) population subgroup relative to MICT. HIIT was also significantly superior to MICT for physical role, vitality, and social function. We conclude that HIIT and MICT have similar effects on QOL and MH in patients with CVD, while HIIT is favorable for improving patients’ self-perceived physiological functioning based on their status and social adjustment, and this effect is more significant in patients with CAD.

Background. The present study aimed to analyze the impact of astragaloside IV (AS-IV) on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and the glycocalyx, elucidating the potential mechanism of AS-IV. Methods. Rat models of AAA were established using porcine pancreatic elastase. The effects of intraperitoneal AS-IV injection on the morphology, diameter, and glycocalyx of the aorta and the expression of miR-17-3p and Syndecan-1 (SDC1) protein were examined. Differentially expressed miRNAs from peripheral blood samples of healthy individuals, untreated patients with AAA, and treated patients with AAA were identified through sequencing. The relationship between miR-17-3p and SDC1 was validated using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. In vitro, shear stress was induced in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) to simulate AAA. Overexpression of miR-17-3p was performed to assess the effects of AS-IV on miR-17-3p and SDC1 expressions, apoptosis, and glycocalyx in HAECs. Results. AS-IV mitigated aortic damage in AAA rats, reducing the aortic diameter and alleviating glycocalyx damage. In addition, it suppressed the increase in miR-17-3p expression and promoted SDC1 expression in AAA rats. Peripheral blood miR-17-3p levels were significantly higher in patients with AAA than in healthy individuals. miR-17-3p inhibited the SDC1 protein expression in HAECs. In the in vitro AAA environment, miR-17-3p was upregulated and SDC1 was downregulated in HAECs. AS-IV inhibited miR-17-3p expression, promoted SDC1 expression, and mitigated shear stress-induced apoptosis and glycocalyx damage in HAECs. Overexpression of miR-17-3p blocked AS-IV–induced SDC1 expression promotion, glycocalyx protection, and apoptosis suppression in HAECs. Conclusion. miR-17-3p may damage the glycocalyx of aortic endothelial cells by targeting SDC1. AS-IV may promote SDC1 expression by inhibiting miR-17-3p, thereby protecting the glycocalyx and alleviating AAA.

Abstract Background Only 1.5% of the human genome encodes proteins, while large part of the remaining encodes noncoding RNAs (ncRNA). Many ncRNAs form structures and perform many important functions. Accurately identifying structured ncRNAs in the human genome and discovering their biological functions remain a major challenge. Results Here, we have established a pipeline (CM-line) with the following features for analyzing the large genomes of humans and other animals. First, we selected species with larger genetic distances to facilitate the discovery of covariations and compatible mutations. Second, we used CMfinder, which can generate useful alignments even with low sequence conservation. Third, we removed repetitive sequences and known structured ncRNAs to reduce the workload of CMfinder. Fourth, we used Infernal to find more representatives and refine the structure. We reported 11 classes of structured ncRNA candidates with significant covariations in humans. Functional analysis showed that these ncRNAs may have variable functions. Some may regulate circadian clock genes through poly (A) signals (PAS); some may regulate the elongation factor (EEF1A) and the T-cell receptor signaling pathway by cooperating with RNA binding proteins. Conclusions By searching for important features of RNA structure from large genomes, the CM-line has revealed the existence of a variety of novel structured ncRNAs. Functional analysis suggests that some newly discovered ncRNA motifs may have biological functions. The pipeline we have established for the discovery of structured ncRNAs and the identification of their functions can also be applied to analyze other large genomes.

Nanotechniques for curcumin (Cur) encapsulation provided a potential capability to avoid limitations and improve biological activities in food and pharmaceutics. Different from multi-step encapsulation systems, in this study, zein–curcumin (Z–Cur) core-shell nanoparticles could be self-assembled within Eudragit S100 (ES100) fibers through one-pot coaxial electrospinning with Cur at an encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 96% for ES100–zein–Cur (ES100–Z–Cur) and EE of 67% for self-assembled Z–Cur. The resulting structure realized the double protection of Cur by ES100 and zein, which provided both pH responsiveness and sustained release performances. The self-assembled Z–Cur nanoparticles released from fibermats were spherical (diameter 328 nm) and had a relatively uniform distribution (polydispersity index 0.62). The spherical structures of Z–Cur nanoparticles and Z–Cur nanoparticles loaded in ES100 fibermats could be observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) revealed that hydrophobic interactions occurred between the encapsulated Cur and zein, while Cur was amorphous (rather than in crystalline form). Loading in the fibermat could significantly enhance the photothermal stability of Cur. This novel one-pot system much more easily and efficiently combined nanoparticles and fibers together, offering inherent advantages such as step economy, operational simplicity, and synthetic efficiency. These core-shell biopolymer fibermats which incorporate Cur can be applied in pharmaceutical products toward the goals of sustainable and controllable intestine-targeted drug delivery.

Cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) affects bacterial physiological and biochemical functions like biofilm, motility, virulence, and bacterial secretion systems. GGDEF/EAL-domain proteins, participating in c-di-GMP synthesis and degradation, are widely present in Pseudomonas, with various structures and functions. Pseudomonas glycinae MS82 is a rhizosphere bacterium that protects mushroom against the pathogenic fungi. Although 14 genes encoding GGDEF/EAL-domain proteins have been identified in the genome of MS82, c-di-GMP regulation is poorly understood as a facilitator or repressor of physiological phenotypes. Here, PafQ and PafR, encoding the proteins with the tandem GGDEF/EAL domain, were functionally analyzed and found to regulate antifungal activity. Individual deletion mutants of PafQ and PafR were constructed in P. glycinae MS82 through biparental conjugation and homologous recombination. Subsequently, antifungal activity, biofilm formation, motility, and expression of the genes related to antifungal substance synthesis were examined and contrasted with those of wild-type P. glycinae MS82. Most phenotypes of physiological activities were significantly reduced after knocking out PafQ or PafR. In other members of the genus Pseudomonas, homologous genes of PafQ and PafR possess different functions in c-di-GMP regulation. In P. glycinae, the positive regulation of PafQ and PafR on fungistatic substance synthesis, biofilm formation, and motility is crucial in the biocontrol of mushroom diseases.

ABSTRACT: During human motor control, the three pathways of motor control coordinate to complete human response and inhibition control, so whether different types of motor skills training will affect the three pathways of motor control is the main question in this study. Magnetic resonance imaging was combined with behavioural evaluation to analyse the effects of different special training sessions on the motor control network of the frontal lobe and basal ganglia and to explore the role of the central nervous system in the regulation of motor behaviour. A Stop-signal paradigm was used to measure reaction and inhibition capacity, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used for whole brain scanning, and resting state data were collected. Compared to the control group, the competitive aerobics athletes had better reflexes while the soccer players had both better reflexes and inhibitory control. Furthermore, we found that training in the two sets of skills resulted in significant differences in different resting state brain function parameters compared with the control group. Additionally, there were significant differences among the three groups in the direct and indirect pathways of motor control in terms of functional connectivity. Open skill training may improve reaction ability while closed skill training improve both reaction and inhibition ability. These results suggest that the strength of the functional connectivity between the right inferior frontal gyrus and the left putamen may be a key to improving the inhibitory, and the left supplementary motor area- bilateral thalamic loop may play an inhibitory role in motor control.

Background Shading is an important factor affecting the cultivation of American ginseng, as it influences crop quality and yield. Rhizosphere microorganisms are also crucial for normal plant growth and development. However, whether different shade types significantly change American ginseng rhizosphere microorganisms is unknown. Methods This study evaluated the rhizosphere soils of American ginseng under traditional, high flag and high arch shade sheds. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing determined the change of rhizosphere bacterial communities. Results The microbial diversity in rhizosphere soils of American ginseng significantly changed under different shading conditions. The bacteria diversity was more abundant in the high arch shade than flat and traditional shades. Different bacterial genera, including Bradyrhizobium, Rhizobium, Sphingomonas, Streptomyces and Nitrospira, showed significantly different abundances. Different shading conditions changed the microbial metabolic function in the American ginseng rhizosphere soils. The three types of shade sheds had specific enriched functional groups. The abundance of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters consistently increased in the bacterial microbiota. These results help understand the influence of shading systems on the rhizosphere microecology of American ginseng, and contribute to the American ginseng cultivation.

Brain stimulation is a critical technique in neuroscience research and clinical application. Traditional transcranial brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS) have been widely investigated in neuroscience for decades. However, TMS and tDCS have poor spatial resolution and penetration depth, and DBS requires electrode implantation in deep brain structures. These disadvantages have limited the clinical applications of these techniques. Owing to developments in science and technology, substantial advances in noninvasive and precise deep stimulation have been achieved by neuromodulation studies. Second-generation brain stimulation techniques that mainly rely on acoustic, electronic, optical, and magnetic signals, such as focused ultrasound, temporal interference, near-infrared optogenetic, and nanomaterial-enabled magnetic stimulation, offer great prospects for neuromodulation. This review summarized the mechanisms, development, applications, and strengths of these techniques and the prospects and challenges in their development. We believe that these second-generation brain stimulation techniques pave the way for brain disorder therapy.

Background Many lncRNAs have been recognized as critical regulatory factors in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Herein, we further tested the influence of long non-coding RNA urothelial carcinoma associated 1 (UCA1) on cardiomyocytes injury in AMI, along with the role of microRNA-122 (miR-122) in this influence.Methods Cardiomyocytes H9c2 was subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) stimulation. Cell viability and apoptosis were assessed. The UCA1 and miR-122 expressions were measured by qRT-PCR. Plasmids and miRNAs transfection were utilized to elevate UCA1 and miR-122 expressions. Subsequently, the influences of UCA1 and/or miR-122 overexpression on OGD-aroused H9c2 cell viability inhibition and apoptosis were probed. The AKT/mTOR and JNK/p38MAPK pathways in cells were analyzed.Results OGD aroused H9c2 cell injury by suppressing cell viability and elevating cell apoptosis. Followed by OGD stimulation, the UCA1 expression was lowered in H9c2 cells. Overexpression of UCA1 weakened H9c2 cell injury aroused by OGD and declined miR-122 expression. Moreover, miR-122 attended to the influence of UCA1 overexpression on OGD-aroused H9c2 cell injury. Overexpression of UCA1 weakened OGD-aroused AKT/mTOR pathway inactivation and JNK/p38MAPK pathway activation by declining miR-122.Conclusion UCA1-relieved OGD-aroused H9c2 cell injury might be achieved via declining miR-122 and then promoting AKT/mTOR pathway and suppressing JNK/p38MAPK pathway.

Cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) is synthesized by diguanylate cyclase (DGC) with the GGDEF domain. As a ubiquitous bacterial second messenger, it regulates diverse life-activity phenotypes in some bacteria. Although 38 genes encoding GGDEF-domain-containing proteins have been identified in the genome of the Pseudomonas glycinae strain MS82, whether c-di-GMP functions as a facilitator or repressor of life-activity phenotypes is poorly understood. In this study, one of the 38 genes containing a GGDEF domain in MS82, PafS was investigated to explore its regulatory function in bacterial life activities. The PafS-deletion mutant ΔPafS and reversion mutant PafS-comp were constructed by the method of biparental conjugation and homologous recombination. The life activities of the mutants, such as antifungal activity, biofilm formation ability, polysaccharide content, and motor behavior, were explored. The results showed that all life-activity phenotypes were significantly reduced after knocking out PafS, whereas all were significantly restored to a similar level to that of MS82 after the complementation of PafS. These results suggested that PafS plays an important role in the regulation of a range of cellular activities by c-di-GMP in P. glycinae MS82.

Aberrant cortical spike-local field potential (LFP) coupling leads to abnormal basal ganglia activity, disruption of cortical function, and impaired movement in Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, the primary motor cortex mediated plasticity mechanism underlying behavioral improvement by exercise intervention was investigated. Exercise alleviates motor dysfunction and induces neuroplasticity in PD. In this study, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were injected with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) to induce unilateral nigrostriatal dopamine depletion. Two weeks later, a 4-week exercise intervention was initiated in the PD + exercise (Ex) group. Multichannel recording technology recorded spikes and LFPs in rat motor cortices, and balanced ability tests evaluated behavioral performance. The balanced ability test showed that the total crossing time/front leg error/input latency time was significantly lower in PD + Ex rats than in PD rats (P < 0.05). Scalograms and LFP power spectra indicated increased beta-range LFP power in lesioned hemispheres, with exercise reducing LFP power spectral density. Spike-triggered LFP waveform averages showed strong phase-locking in PD motor cortex cells, and exercise reduced spike-LFP synchronization. Our results suggest that exercise can suppress overexcitability of LFPs and minimize spike-LFP synchronization in the motor cortex, leading to motor-improving effects in PD.

Abstract: The mechanism behind exercise-induced fatigue is a significant topic in the field of sports physiology. Therefore, establishing and evaluating an acute exercise-induced fatigue animal model that explores the limits of the motor system may provide greater insight into these mechanisms. Heart rate is an important quantitative parameter that accurately reflects the immediate change in physical function due to exercise load. And there is likely to be an important correlation between heart rate and behavioral performance. In this study, changes in heart rate and behavioral indexes during exercise-induced fatigue were quantitatively analyzed in rats using heart rate telemetry and video methods respectively. The behavioral indexes were used as independent variables and the degree of fatigue was used as the forecast value. Ternary quadratic function curve fitting was used to deduce a formula to calculate a fatigue score: Y = 15.2548+0.4346∙xa-0.1154∙xb+0.6826∙xc+0.0044∙xa∙xb-0.0021∙xb∙xc-0.0013∙xc∙xa-0.0023∙xa2-0.0016∙xb2 (r2=0.906). It identified a linear relationship between heart rate and exercise intensity, with a plateau in heart rate occurring during difference periods. It will serve as an effective reference for the modeling of exercise-induced fatigue. In addition, it also provides a theoretical method for analyzing the correlation between peripheral and central parameters.

By evenly mixing polytetrafluoroethylene-silicon energetic materials (PTFE-Si EMs) with tin oxide (SnO2) particles, we demonstrate a direct synthesis of graphene-encapsulated SnO2 (Gr-SnO2) nanoparticles through the self-propagated exothermic reaction of the EMs. The highly exothermic reaction of the PTFE-Si EMs released a huge amount of heat that induced an instantaneous temperature rise at the reaction zone, and the rapid expansion of the gaseous SiF4 product provided a high-speed gas flow for dispersing the molten particles into finer nanoscale particles. Furthermore, the reaction of the PTFE-NPs with Si resulted in a simultaneous synthesis of graphene that encapsulated the SnO2 nanoparticles in order to form the core-shell nanostructure. As sodium storage material, the graphene-encapsulated SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit a good cycling performance, superior rate capability, and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 85.3%. This proves the effectiveness of our approach for the scalable synthesis of core-shell-structured graphene-encapsulated nanomaterials.

Aging is a process associated with a decline in cognitive and motor functions, which can be attributed to neurological changes in the brain. Tai Chi, a multimodal mind-body exercise, can be practiced by people across all ages. Previous research identified effects of Tai Chi practice on delaying cognitive and motor degeneration. Benefits in behavioral performance included improved fine and gross motor skills, postural control, muscle strength, and so forth. Neural plasticity remained in the aging brain implies that Tai Chi-associated benefits may not be limited to the behavioral level. Instead, neurological changes in the human brain play a significant role in corresponding to the behavioral improvement. However, previous studies mainly focused on the effects of behavioral performance, leaving neurological changes largely unknown. This systematic review summarized extant studies that used brain imaging techniques and EEG to examine the effects of Tai Chi on older adults. Eleven articles were eligible for the final review. Three neuroimaging techniques including fMRI (N = 6), EEG (N = 4), and MRI (N = 1), were employed for different study interests. Significant changes were reported on subjects' cortical thickness, functional connectivity and homogeneity of the brain, and executive network neural function after Tai Chi intervention. The findings suggested that Tai Chi intervention give rise to beneficial neurological changes in the human brain. Future research should develop valid and convincing study design by applying neuroimaging techniques to detect effects of Tai Chi intervention on the central nervous system of older adults. By integrating neuroimaging techniques into randomized controlled trials involved with Tai Chi intervention, researchers can extend the current research focus from behavioral domain to neurological level.

Epidemiological studies indicate that physical activity and exercise may reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD), and clinical observations suggest that physical exercise can reduce the motor symptoms in PD patients. In experimental animals, a profound observation is that exercise of appropriate timing, duration, and intensity can reduce toxin-induced lesion of the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) system in animal PD models, although negative results have also been reported, potentially due to inappropriate timing and intensity of the exercise regimen. Exercise may also minimize DA denervation-induced medium spiny neuron (MSN) dendritic atrophy and other abnormalities such as enlarged corticostriatal synapse and abnormal MSN excitability and spiking activity. Taken together, epidemiological studies, clinical observations, and animal research indicate that appropriately dosed physical activity and exercise may not only reduce the risk of developing PD in vulnerable populations but also benefit PD patients by potentially protecting the residual DA neurons or directly restoring the dysfunctional cortico-basal ganglia motor control circuit, and these benefits may be mediated by exercise-triggered production of endogenous neuroprotective molecules such as neurotrophic factors. Thus, exercise is a universally available, side effect-free medicine that should be prescribed to vulnerable populations as a preventive measure and to PD patients as a component of treatment. Future research needs to establish standardized exercise protocols that can reliably induce DA neuron protection, enabling the delineation of the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms that in turn can maximize exercise-induced neuroprotection and neurorestoration in animal PD models and eventually in PD patients.

One aspect of motor fatigue is the exercise-induced reduction of neural activity to voluntarily drive the muscle or muscle group. Functional magnetic resonance imaging provides access to investigate the neural activation on the whole brain level and studies observed changes of activation intensity after exercise-induced motor fatigue in the sensorimotor cortex. However, in human, little evidence exists to demonstrate the role of subcortical brain regions in motor fatigue, which is contradict to abundant researches in rodent indicating that during simple movement, the activity of the basal ganglia is modulated by the state of motor fatigue. Thus, in present study, we explored the effect of motor fatigue on subcortical areas in human. A series of fMRI data were collected from 11 healthy subjects while they were executing simple motor tasks in two conditions: before and under the motor fatigue state. The results showed that in both conditions, movements evoked activation volumes in the sensorimotor areas, SMA, cerebellum, thalamus and basal ganglia. Of primary importance are the results that the intensity and size of activation volumes in the subcortical areas (i.e. thalamus and basal ganglia areas) are significantly decreased during the motor fatigue state, implying that motor fatigue disturbs the motor control processing in a way that both sensorimotor areas and subcortical brain areas are less active. Further study is needed to clarify how subcortical areas contribute to the overall decreased activity of CNS during motor fatigue state.

The Ru-based catalysts, including Ru/AC (activated carbon), TPAP (tetrapropylammonium perruthenate)/AC, TPAP/AC-HNO3, and TPAP/AC-HCl, were prepared and assessed for the direct synthesis of vinyl chloride monomer. The results indicate that the TPAP/AC-HCl catalyst exhibits the best performance with the conversion falling from 97% to 91% in 48 hours’ reaction under the conditions of 180 °C, a GHSV(C2H2) of 180 h−1, and the feed ratio VHCl/VC2H2 of 1.15. The substitution of RuCl3 precursor with high valent TPAP species leads to more ruthenium oxides active species in the catalysts; the acidification treatment of carrier in TPAP/AC catalyst can produce an enhanced interaction between the active species and the modified functional groups on the carrier, and it is beneficial to inhibit the carbon deposition and sintering of ruthenium species in the reaction process, greatly increase the adsorption ability of reactants, and further increase the amount of dominating active species in the catalysts, thus improving the catalytic performance. This also provides a promising strategy to explore high efficient and economic mercury-free catalysts for the hydrochlorination of acetylene.

Low-cost sodium-ion batteries hold great potential for large-scale energy storage owing to the abundance of sodium reserves. Despite the higher energy density and initial coulombic efficiency of O3-type transition metal layered oxide cathode materials, denoted as NaxMO2 (M = transition metal, 0.7 < x # 1), their poor long-term cycling performance remains a significant obstacle to their wide-scale industrialization. Herein, we investigate the capacity fading and failure mechanisms of O3-type NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2cathode materials after long-term cycling. The results from XRD, SEM, TEM, and ICP-OES etc. reveal the structural damage, surface phase transition, and migration and dissolution of transition metal ions of the material. It is revealed that surface phase evolution from R3m layered structure to the rock salt (Fm3m) phase after long-term cycling leads to a detrimental feedback loop between the bulk phase and interface. The repeated volumetric strain of the bulk phase disrupts the integrity of the cathode particles, thus hindering ion migration, continuously consuming the electrolyte through side reactions on the fresh surface, affecting the chemical composition of the cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI), and ultimately deteriorating electrochemical performance. This work offers fresh insights into the failure mechanism of O3-type layered oxide cathode materials to guide the performance enhancement of sodium-ion batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
