2. Alterations in the Salivary Microbiome and Metabolism in Patients With Carotid Atherosclerosis from Rural Northeast China

Background Periodontitis and atherosclerosis are both chronic inflammatory diseases with a high prevalence. Increasing evidence supports the independent association between severe periodontitis and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, in which oral microorganisms may play an important role. We aimed to evaluate the characteristic changes of salivary microbiome and metabolome in patients with carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) and periodontitis. Methods and Results The subjects were obtained from a cross‐sectional study that included 1933 participants aged 40 years or older from rural northeast China. The study enrolled 48 subjects with CAS and 48 controls without CAS matched by sex, age, body mass index, and prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. We performed full‐length 16S rDNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics of saliva samples from 96 subjects. We found that CAS was closely associated with an increased abundance of Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Cutibacterium. Furthermore, patients with CAS had higher prevalence of severe periodontitis than the control group. Notably, periodontal pathogens such as Tannerella and Anaeroglobus were not only associated with periodontitis but also enriched in patients with CAS, whereas periodontal health‐associated Neisseria was more abundant in those without CAS. We also identified 2 lipid metabolism pathways, including glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid metabolism, as associated with CAS. The levels of trimethylamine N‐oxide and inflammatory mediator leukotriene D4 were significantly higher in patients with CAS, whereas the levels of carnosine were significantly lower, than those in controls. Additionally, serum levels of inflammatory marker high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein were significantly increased in CAS and positively correlated with the abundance of Anaeroglobus and leukotriene D4 in saliva. Conclusions Our study suggests that characteristic changes in salivary microbiota and metabolites are closely related to CAS, and periodontitis and associated microorganisms may be involved in the initiation and progression of CAS.

3. In Silico Identification and Validation of Cuproptosis-Related LncRNA Signature as a Novel Prognostic Model and Immune Function Analysis in Colon Adenocarcinoma

Background: Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is the most common subtype of colon cancer, and cuproptosis is a recently newly defined form of cell death that plays an important role in the development of several malignant cancers. However, studies of cuproptosis-related lncRNAs (CRLs) involved in regulating colon adenocarcinoma are limited. The purpose of this study is to develop a new prognostic CRLs signature of colon adenocarcinoma and explore its underlying biological mechanism. Methods: In this study, we downloaded RNA-seq profiles, clinical data and tumor mutational burden (TMB) data from the TCGA database, identified cuproptosis-associated lncRNAs using univariate Cox, lasso regression analysis and multivariate Cox analysis, and constructed a prognostic model with risk score based on these lncRNAs. COAD patients were divided into high- and low-risk subgroups based on the risk score. Cox regression was also used to test whether they were independent prognostic factors. The accuracy of this prognostic model was further validated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), C-index and Nomogram. In addition, the lncRNA/miRNA/mRNA competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network were constructed based on the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Results: We constructed a prognostic model based on 15 cuproptosis-associated lncRNAs. The validation results showed that the risk score of the model (HR = 1.003, 95% CI = 1.001–1.004; p < 0.001) could serve as an independent prognostic factor with accurate and credible predictive power. The risk score had the highest AUC (0.793) among various factors such as risk score, stage, gender and age, also indicating that the model we constructed to predict patient survival was better than other clinical characteristics. Meanwhile, the possible biological mechanisms of colon adenocarcinoma were explored based on the lncRNA/miRNA/mRNA ceRNA network and PPI network constructed by WGCNA. Conclusion: The prognostic model based on 15 cuproptosis-related lncRNAs has accurate and reliable predictive power to effectively predict clinical outcomes in colon adenocarcinoma patients.

This research was to summarize the comparative efficacy and safety of red yeast rice (RYR) preparations and analyze the treatment ranking of lipid-lowering agents including RYR. Thirty-one systematic reviews (SRs) involving 165 randomized trials with 14,987 dyslipidemia participants were included. All the SRs showed a high overall risk of bias. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was performed. Only five trials reported major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and three trials reported lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)]. 5. Association between Periodontitis and HbA1c Levels in Non-Diabetic Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: A high detection rate of diabetes among dental visitors has been reported recently. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association between periodontitis and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels among non-diabetic individuals. Methods: The EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Open GREY databases were searched, and observational studies published until 1st June 2023 were identified. A methodological quality assessment was conducted based on the original and modified versions of the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Cohort, case–control, and cross-sectional studies that performed clinical periodontal examinations and measured HbA1c levels in non-diabetic adults were included. A meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the weighted mean difference (WMD) between individuals with and without periodontitis. Results: In total, 29 case–control and 5 cross-sectional studies were selected from 2583 potentially eligible articles. Among them, sixteen case–control and three cross-sectional studies with moderate to high quality were selected for the meta-analyses. The HbA1c levels in periodontitis patients were significantly higher than those in individuals with healthy periodontal conditions (WMD = 0.16; p < 0.001) among the non-diabetic populations. Conclusions: This study reveals a significant association between periodontitis and HbA1c levels in non-diabetic populations. Thus, HbA1c screening may be recommended to detect potential hyperglycemia in non-diabetic periodontitis patients.

6. Comparative changes in sugars and lipids show evidence of a critical node for regeneration in safflower seeds during aging

During seed aging, there is a critical node (CN) where the population viability drops sharply. Exploring the specific locations of the CN in different species of plants is crucial for understanding the biological storage properties of seeds and refining seed life span management. Safflower, a bulk oil crop that relies on seeds for propagation, has a short seed life. However, at present, its biological characteristics during storage are not clear, especially the changes in metabolic capability and cell structures. Such knowledge is needed to improve the management of safflower seed life span and effective preservation in gene banks. Here, the seed survival curve of oilseed safflower under the controlled deterioration conditions of 60% relative humidity and 50°C was detected. The seed population showed an inverted S shape for the fall in germination. In the first 12 days of aging, germination remained above 86%. Prior to the CN at approximately day 10 (C10), when viability was in the “plateau” interval, seed vigor reduced at the same imbibition time point. Further analysis of the changes in sugar concentration found that the sucrose content decreased slowly with aging and the content of raffinose and two monosaccharides decreased abruptly at C10. Differentially metabolized lipids, namely lysophospholipids [lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) and lyso-phosphatidylethanolamines (LPE)] and PMeOH, increased at day 3 of aging (C3). Fatty acid content increased by C6, and the content of phospholipids [phosphatidylcholines (PC), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), and phosphatidylinositols (PI) and glycolipids [digalactosyl diacylglycerol, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol, and sulphoquinovosyl diglycerides (SQDG)] decreased significantly from C10. In addition, the activities of raffinose hydrolase alpha-galactosidase and the glyoxylate key enzyme isocitrate lyase decreased with seed aging. Confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed shrinkage of the seed plasma membrane at C10 and the later fragmentation. Seedling phenotypic indicators and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride activity assays also verified that there were significant changes in seeds quality at the CN. In summary, the time point C10 is a CN during seed population aging. Before the CN, sugar and lipid metabolism, especially fatty acid metabolism into sugar, can make up for the energy consumed by aging. After this point, the seeds were irreversibly damaged, and their viability was greatly and rapidly reduced as the cell structure became increasingly destroyed.

7. Extracting a Connected River Network from DEM by Incorporating Surface River Occurrence Data and Sentinel-2 Imagery in the Danjiangkou Reservoir Area

Accurate extraction of river network from the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a significant content in the application of a distributed hydrological model. However, the study of river network extraction based on DEM has some limitations, such as location offset, inaccurate parallel channel and short circuit of meandering channels. In this study, we proposed a new enhancement method for NASADEM V001 in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area. We used Surface Water Occurrence (SWO) and Sentinel-2 data to describe vertical limit differences between morphological units to complement actual flow path information from NASADEM data by a stream burning method. The differences between the extracted river network and the actual river network were evaluated in three different geographical regions. Compared with the actual river centerline, the location error of the river network extraction was significantly reduced. The average offset distances between river network extraction and the actual river network were 68.38, 36.99, and 21.59 m in the three test areas. Compared with NASADEM V001, the average offset distances in the three test areas were reduced by 7.26, 40.29, and 42.35%, respectively. To better estimate accuracy, we also calculated and compared the accuracy of the river network based on MERIT Hrdro and HydroSHEDS. The experimental results demonstrated that the method can effectively improve the accuracy of river network extraction and meet the needs of hydrological simulation.

8. Mapping Plant Diversity Based on Combined SENTINEL-1/2 Data—Opportunities for Subtropical Mountainous Forests

Plant diversity is an important parameter in maintaining forest ecosystem services, functions and stability. Timely and accurate monitoring and evaluation of large-area wall-to-wall maps on plant diversity and its spatial heterogeneity are crucial for the conservation and management of forest resources. However, traditional botanical field surveys designed to estimate plant diversity are usually limited in their spatiotemporal resolutions. Using Sentinel-1 (S-1) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) data at high spatiotemporal scales, combined with and referenced to botanical field surveys, may be the best choice to provide accurate plant diversity distribution information over a large area. In this paper, we predicted and mapped plant diversity in a subtropical forest using 24 months of freely and openly available S-1 and S-2 images (10 m × 10 m) data over a large study area (15,290 km2). A total of 448 quadrats (10 m × 10 m) of forestry field surveys were captured in a subtropical evergreen-deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest to validate a machine learning algorithm. The objective was to link the fine Sentinel spectral and radar data to several ground-truthing plant diversity indices in the forests. The results showed that: (1) The Simpson and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices were the best predicted indices using random forest regression, with ȓ2 of around 0.65; (2) The use of S-1 radar data can enhance the accuracy of the predicted heterogeneity indices in the forests by approximately 0.2; (3) As for the mapping of Simpson and Shannon-Wiener, the overall accuracy was 67.4% and 64.2% respectively, while the texture diversity’s overall accuracy was merely 56.8%; (4) From the evaluation and prediction map information, the Simpson, Shannon-Wiener and texture diversity values (and its confidence interval values) indicate spatial heterogeneity in pixel level. The large-area forest plant diversity indices maps add spatially explicit information to the ground-truthing data. Based on the results, we conclude that using the time-series of S-1 and S-2 radar and spectral characteristics, when coupled with limited ground-truthing data, can provide reasonable assessments of plant spatial heterogeneity and diversity across wide areas. It could also help promote forest ecosystem and resource conservation activities in the forestry sector.

10. Exploring Chinese Teachers' Commitment to Being a Cooperating Teacher in a University-Government-School Initiative for Rural Practicum Placements

Faced with urban schools' reluctance to host student teachers on practicum because "student teachers disturb their teaching order," Northeast Normal University in Changchun, China, collaborated with four rural provinces to develop a University-Government-School (UGS) initiative for rural practicum placements. To understand the teachers' commitment to this alternative approach to practicum placements, we posed the question: What motivates and challenges teacher participation in the UGS initiative? To provide answers, we drew on the recently developed Mentoring Profile Inventory--a 62-item inventory that captures teachers' motivations and challenges in supervising student teachers on practicum. Further, by comparing the UGS results with those of supervising teachers from three other countries, we were able to discern aspects of the UGS teachers' commitment that were particularly distinctive to the Chinese context. For example, UGS supervisors are significantly more motivated than their international counterparts to participate in the practicum because student teachers: act as a "Reminder about Career Development"; enable supervisors to have "Time-Out to Monitor Pupil Learning"; and they "Promote Pupil Engagement." These results provide important baseline data for making sense of the UGS teachers' commitment to the practicum, for situating their responses within current educational reform efforts, and for determining their professional development needs.

11. The default-interventionist model underlies premise typicality weakening the premise diversity effect during category-based induction: Event-related potentials evidence

The diversity effect during category-based induction (CBI) means that the more diverse the evidence, the higher will be the conclusion's inductive strength. However, it is influenced by the premise typicality. Three competitive cognitive processing models account for this influence: (1) The pre-emptive conflict resolution model assumes that only premise typicality activates; (2) the parallel-competitive model assumes that premise typicality and diversity activate in parallel; and (3) the default-interventionist model assumes that a default response of premise diversity first activates and is subsequently followed by premise typicality, or premise typicality activates first, followed by premise diversity. The timing of premise typicality affecting the diversity effect during CBI was measured using event-related potentials to determine which cognitive model best explains this influence. Similar to previous studies, non-diverse premise inductive tasks involving two typical premise categories were compared with diverse premise inductive tasks involving a typical and an atypical category. The results showed that non-diverse conditions had higher "correct" response proportions, greater inductive strength, higher "definitely" response proportions, and shorter reaction times than diverse conditions, showing that premise typicality weakens the diversity effect. Moreover, the diverse premises elicited larger P2, smaller FN400, and greater frontal post-N400-positivity amplitudes than non-diverse premises, suggesting that premise diversity was facilitated during a relatively early time window and revised by premise typicality in a later window. These results support the default-interventionist in nature during thinking and reasoning.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumours, arising mainly from the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) of the gastrointestinal tract. As radiotherapy and chemotherapy are generally ineffective for GISTs, the current primary treatment is surgical resection. However, surgical resection is not choice for most patients. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. Targeted therapy, represented by tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and immunotherapy, represented by immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell immunotherapy (CAR-T), offer new therapeutic options in GISTs and have shown promising treatment responses. In this review, we summarize the molecular classification and immune microenvironment of GISTs and discuss the corresponding targeted therapy and immunotherapy options. This updated knowledge may provide more options for future therapeutic strategies and applications in GISTs.

13. Metastases to duodenum in cervical squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature

Rationale: Metastases to the duodenum in cervical squamous cell carcinoma are extremely rare, with only 7 cases reported in the published English literature. Patient concerns: We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with duodenal metastasis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma who presented with nausea and vomiting within the past 12 days. Diagnosis: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a circular narrowed 2nd part of the duodenum with congested and edematous mucosa, which was biopsied for a suspected neoplastic lesion. The pathological diagnosis indicated squamous cell carcinoma identical to the original tumor, confirming duodenal metastasis. Interventions: The patient received total parenteral nutrition on admission, but symptoms of jaundice soon appeared in the following week, suggesting infiltration of carcinoma into the common bile duct. After percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage was performed, jaundice eased in the following 3 days, and an uncovered self-expandable metallic stent was subsequently inserted into the stenosis of 2nd and 3rd part of the duodenum. Subsequently, the patient's diet quickly resumed. Outcomes: The patient refused further intervention and was discharged home to continue palliative care at the local hospital. Lessons: Clinicians should be alert to patients’ past medical history to ensure that duodenal metastasis of other tumors is considered in the differential diagnosis. For endoscopists, awareness of such patterns of duodenal stenosis is vital for the accurate recognition of such infrequent diseases.

Objective: To investigate the effect of an evidence-based activity management program for pregnant women after intraspinal labor analgesia based on their delivery outcomes. Methods: A prospective study was conducted in 96 pregnant women who received intraspinal labor analgesia in our hospital. The control group (48 cases) received routine nursing care after analgesia, and the intervention group (48 cases) received evidence-based activity management program after analgesia. The labor time, sense of birth control, physiological and psychological stress reactions, analgesic effect, delivery outcome and early postpartum pelvic floor function were compared between the two groups. Early gastric cancer (EGC) is a well-defined gastric malignancy that is limited to the mucosa or submucosa, irrespective of lymph node metastasis. In recent years, researchers have made significant contributions to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of EGC, and standardization in the evaluation of disease activity. Though the incidence of this cancer is steadily declining in some advanced societies owing to appropriate interventions, there remains a serious threat to health in developing nations. Sulfur with a high specific capacity of 1673 mAh g(-1) is yet to be used as commercial cathode for lithium batteries because of its low utilization rate and poor cycle stability. In this work, a tube-in-tube carbon structure is demonstrated to relieve the critical problems with sulfur cathode: poor electrical conductivity, dissolution of lithium polysulfides, and large volume change during cycling. A number of small carbon nanotubes (∼20 nm in diameter) and a high loading amount of 85.2 wt % sulfur are both filled completely inside a large amorphous carbon nanotube (∼200 nm in diameter). Owing to the presence of these electrically conductive, highly flexible and structurally robust small CNTs and a large CNT overlayer, sulfur material exhibits a high utilization rate and delivers a large discharge capacity of 1633 mAh g(-1) (based on the mass of sulfur) at 0.1 C, approaching its theoretical capacity (1673 mAh g(-1)). The obtained S-CNTs@CNT electrode demonstrates superior high-rate cycling performances. Large discharge capacities of ∼1146, 1121, and 954 mAh g(-1) are observed after 150 cycles at large current rates of 1, 2, and 5 C, respectively.

This paper presents the development of a photoelectrochemical sensor for hypochlorous acid (HOCl) detection, employing a phenothiazine-based organic photosensitizer (Dye-PZ). The designed probe, Dye-PZ, follows a D-π-A structure with phenothiazine as the electron-donating group and a cyano-substituted pyridine unit as the electron-accepting group. A specific reaction of the phenothiazine sulfur atom with HOCl enables selective recognition. The covalent immobilization of Dye-PZ onto a titanium dioxide nanorod-coated fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode (FTO/TiO2) using bromo-silane coupling agent (BrPTMS) resulted in the fabrication of the photoanode FTO/TiO2/BrPTMS/Dye-PZ. The photoanode exhibited a significant photoresponse under visible-light irradiation, with a subsequent reduction in photocurrent upon reaction with HOCl. The oxidation of the phenothiazine sulfur atom to a sulfoxide diminished the internal charge transfer (ICT) effect. Leveraging this principle, the successful photoelectrochemical sensing of HOCl was achieved. The sensor showed high stability, excellent reproducibility, and selective sensitivity for HOCl detection. Our study provides a novel approach for the development of efficient photoelectrochemical sensors based on organic photosensitizers, with promising applications in water quality monitoring and biosensing.

Background The aim of the study is to develop a risk score model for identifying postprandial hyperglycemia without oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) in Chinese population, and minimize the number of subjects needing further OGTT. Methods Multivariable stepwise logistic regression was used to develop risk score models in a derivation cohort (7953 participants without known diabetes). The developed models were verified in a validation cohort (another 1455 subjects without known diabetes). All subjects had completed questionnaires, physical examination and OGTT. Performances of the risk score models were estimated using receiver operating characteristic curves. Results Two risk score models for screening postprandial hyperglycemia were developed. The simple model used non-invasive risk factors (age, height, weight, waist, systolic blood pressure, pulse, hypertension, dyslipidemia and family history of diabetes mellitus), and the full model contained additional variables [fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride/high density lipoprotein cholesterol] obtainable by invasive laboratory tests. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of simple model was similar to FBG and glycated haemoglobin. Abstract Background Transthoracic single-port assisted laparoscopic five-step maneuver inferior mediastinal lymphadenectomy for Siewert type II adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction (AEG) has superiority in lower mediastinal lymph nodes dissection and digestive tract reconstruction. However, the right pleura was probably ruptured in this surgical technique. The aim of this study was to explore whether the infracardiac bursa (ICB) exposed could protect right pleura. Methods We retrospectively collected and evaluated the clinical and pathological data of patients who underwent five-step maneuver of transthoracic single-port assisted laparoscopic lower mediastinal lymphadenectomy for Siewert II AEG at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine between May 2017 and February 2022. Results A total of 49 patients were eligible, including 31 patients in ICB exposed group (group A) and 18 patients in ICB unexposed group (group B). The study was administered to explore the perceptions of university students about the content selected for undergraduate-postgraduate programmes by teacher education institutions in China. The perceptions of student teachers were found out about clarity of curricular goals, content selection and organization, and the theory-practice proportion. A mixed method study design was used to investigate the problem. There were 177 randomly selected participants: 88 males and 89 females. The participants were ignorant of curricular goals. The curriculum was not according to the students’ level of maturity. The majority of the student teachers responded that the content was not compatible with their level of interest, and they suggested a dire need for the improvement of current content. Most of the students agreed that the focus of the content was more on theory. The recognition of printed music sheets in camera-based realistic scenarios is a novel research branch of optical music recognition (OMR). However, special factors in realistic scenarios, such as uneven lighting distribution and curvature of staff lines, can have adverse effects on OMR models designed for digital music scores. This paper proposes a stave-aware method based on object detection to recognize monophonic printed sheet music in camera-based scenarios. By detecting the positions of staff lines, we improve the accuracy of note pitch effectively. In addition, we present the Camera Printed Music Staves (CPMS) dataset, which consists of labels and images captured by mobile phones under different angles and lighting conditions in realistic scenarios. We compare our method after training on different datasets with a sequence recognition method called CRNN-CTC on the test set of the CPMS dataset. The results show that the accuracy, robustness, and data dependency of our method perform better.

Background: The established criteria for determining whether to excise the cardia during laparoscopic surgery for gastrointestinal stromal tumors in the esophagogastric junction (EGJ-GISTs) remain controversial. This retrospective multicenter study was conducted to develop a nomogram for predicting the risk of the cardia excision during laparoscopic surgery for EGJ-GISTs.Material and Methods: We reviewed data from 2,127 gastric-GISTs (g-GISTs) patients without distant metastases in four hospital between June 2012 and June 2020. Of those, according to the including criteria, 184 patients [Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine (n = 81), Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University (n = 60), Guangdong General Hospital (n = 34), and The Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (n = 9)] with EGJ-GISTs were identified and included in this study. Factors contributing to risk of cardia excision were identified and used to create a nomogram. Nomogram performance was assessed using a bootstrapped concordance index (c-index) and calibration plots.Results: According to the multivariate analysis, the distance from the margin of the tumor to the esophagogastric line (EG-line) (cm) (OR = 0.001, 95% CI: 0.00001~0.056, P = 0.001) and tumor size (cm) (OR = 14.969, 95% CI: 1.876~119.410, P = 0.011) were significantly related to likelihood of cardia structure excision in laparoscopic surgery for EGJ-GISTs. These two factors were used to generate a nomogram for predicting risk of cardia excision using a logistic regression model; a bootstrapped C-index of 0.988 (calibrated C-index = 0.987) indicated strong predictive ability, with broad calibration.Conclusions: This nomogram based on distance from tumor margin to EG-line and tumor size may serve as a tool for predicting risk of cardia damage during laparoscopic removal of EGJ-GISTs to aid in selection of surgical methods and preoperative neoadjuvant therapy.

Faced with urban schools' reluctance to host student teachers on practicum because “student teachers disturb their teaching order”, Northeast Normal University in Changchun, China, collaborated with four rural provinces to develop a University-Government-School (UGS) initiative for rural practicum placements. To understand the teachers' commitment to this alternative approach to practicum placements, we posed the question: What motivates and challenges teacher participation in the UGS initiative? To provide answers, we drew on the recently developed Mentoring Profile Inventory – a 62-item inventory that captures teachers' motivations and challenges in supervising student teachers on practicum. Further, by comparing the UGS results with those of supervising teachers from three other countries, we were able to discern aspects of the UGS teachers' commitment that were particularly distinctive to the Chinese context. For example, UGS supervisors are significantly more motivated than their international counterparts to participate in the practicum because student teachers: act as aReminder about Career Development;enable supervisors to haveTime-Out to Monitor Pupil Learning;and theyPromote Pupil Engagement. These results provide important baseline data for making sense of the UGS teachers' commitment to the practicum, for situating their responses within current educational reform efforts, and for determining their professional development needs. The study was conducted to explore the primary school teachers' (PSTs) self-efficacy beliefs with respect to gender and subjects (Chinese and Math) taught during practicum in the primary schools. Using random sampling, 103 PSTs (women 68 and men 35) were selected from the teacher education faculty who had just finished their practicum. Descriptive survey study design was used to investigate the problem. Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk-Hoy, 2001) was used to collect data from the participants. Findings revealed that overall the female prospective teachers had higher level of self-efficacy than that of male PSTs. The difference between the cohorts was significant for each of students' engagement and instructional strategies, but it was marginally significant for classroom management. There was nonsignificant difference between the groups on the basis of subjects taught (Math and Chinese) in the cooperating schools. The findings of the study have implications for the researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers for teacher education programmes, and all the stake holders of teaching practice. The purpose of the study was to explore; how much the teacher educators give importance to different practices, processes, and regulations of practicum?, what are the communication and coordination issues among the practicum participants?, what are the participants' perceptions about the value for practicum in teacher education programmes?, and to identify participants' discernment about their own and each others' roles and expectations. Descriptive survey was used to investigate the problem. From six campuses of the University of Education (UE), 59 teacher educators were selected randomly. All the processes, practices, and regulations of practicum were regarded important giving the highest rank to written communication followed by collaborative practices and the lowest to duration of practicum. The participants gave due importance to practicum while they were unclear about each others' roles during practicum. Overall they expressed dissatisfaction for the current model of practicum.
