SUMMARY: Anthocyanin generation in apples (Malus domestica) and the pigmentation that results from it may be caused by irradiation and through administration of methyl jasmonate (MeJA). However, their regulatory interrelationships associated with fruit coloration are not well defined. To determine whether MdERF109, a transcription factor (TF) involved in light‐mediated coloration and anthocyanin biosynthesis, has synergistic effects with other proteins, we performed a yeast two‐hybrid assessment and identified another TF, MdWER. MdWER was induced by MeJA treatment, and although overexpression of MdWER alone did not promote anthocyanin accumulation co‐overexpression with MdERF109 resulted in significantly increase in anthocyanin biosynthesis. MdWER may form a protein complex with MdERF109 to promote anthocyanin accumulation by enhancing combinations between the proteins and their corresponding genes. In addition, MdWER, as a MeJA responsive protein, interacts with the anthocyanin repressor MdJAZ2. Transient co‐expression in apple fruit and protein interaction assays allowed us to conclude that MdERF109 and MdJAZ2 interact with MdWER and take part in the production of anthocyanins upon MeJA treatment and irradiation. Our findings validate a role for the MdERF109‐MdWER‐MdJAZ2 module in anthocyanin biosynthesis and uncover a novel mechanism for how light and MeJA signals are coordinated anthocyanin biosynthesis in apple fruit. The medicinal properties of P. kurrooa are due to bioactive picrosides, synthesized by isoprenoid pathway. The promoters of regulatory genes viz., Pkdxs and Pkhmgr of picroside biosynthesis pathway have been reported to contain ACGT cis -acting elements (bzip motifs) at different locations. In this study, the functionality of ACGT motifs was confirmed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Full length PkbZIP gene was cloned through RACE method. In silico analysis revealed PkbZIP contained a conserved signature bZIP domain (N-x7-R/K-x9- L -x6- L -x6-L). Transcriptional activation and subcellular localization assay confirmed nuclear localization of PkbZIP. EMSA with purified PkbZIP confirmed in vitro binding of PkbZIP to ACGT elements in Pkdxs and Pkhmgr promoters. The expression pattern of PkbZIP positively correlated with the picroside (active medicinal component of the plant) content in different tissues, at 15 °C and under light conditions. Transient overexpression in Nicotiana benthamiana suggested a role of PkbZIP in terpenoid biosynthesis. Background: Virtual reality (VR) offers much potential for learning, but it challenges learners' orientation. Objectives: This paper investigates whether it is possible to use light or movement cues to facilitate orientation in a search task in a desktop‐VR environment so that participants can better attend to the learning content presented simultaneously. Methods: In two pre‐registered online experiments, we investigated the effects of cueing (light and movement) on search time, learning, and several evaluation variables. Participants were asked to find tools in a virtual workshop, while information about the respective tool was narrated. Experiment 1 (N = 60) used a within‐subject design, that is, the objects were alternately highlighted by light, movement or not. For Experiment 2 (N = 159) the narration was substantially shortened, and a between‐subject design was used. Cognitive load and presence were measured additionally. Results and conclusions: In Experiment 1, only the movement cue decreased search time, indicating automatic guidance of learners' attention. There was no effect of cueing on learning, which may be due to the average search time being substantially shorter than the narration, leaving sufficient time to attend to the narration exclusively. In Experiment 2 search times were significantly faster for both cueing methods, but only the light cue resulted in better learning outcomes, which could be explained by the slightly lower presence in the movement cue condition. Implications: Results imply that it is important to develop cues that automatically guide attention without reducing presence. Natural organisms have developed various biological ion channels/transporters to maintain normal life activities to adapt to changing environments. Significantly, ion transporters with active ion transport property show much more controllability on these activities due to a variety of external stimuli, giving guidance to construct artificial counterparts for overcoming the issues in simple nanofluidic systems restricted by self‐diffusive ion transport. Herein, a 2D nanofluidic system based on a Janus membrane (i.e., JM) is constructed, which can achieve light‐driven active ion transport and do favor for ionic power harvesting in electrolyte systems with equal concentrations. The JM is obtained through sequentially assembled montmorillonite (MMT) decorated with photoelectric molecules (i.e., PMMT) and MXene nanosheets. Due to the formed intramembrane electric field and temperature gradient caused by the efficient charge separation and localized thermal excitation under light illumination, a photovoltaic‐driven force and thermo‐osmotic are generated for preferential ion transport. In addition, the unidirectional active transport is employed to harvest ionic power, showing an output power density of 2.0 mW m−2 and a high‐performance energy conversion efficiency of 8.3 × 10−4%. Periphyton is the dominant primary producer in mountain streams and sustains the higher trophic levels. While certain periphyton groups, particularly diatoms, have received extensive study, the comprehensive characterization of the entire community has been largely neglected. This study aims to investigate the temporal pattern of biofilm in mountain streams characterized by different water thermal regimes. A one-year quantitative campaign, involving monthly samplings, was conducted in five subalpine streams in Northern Italy's Orobic Alps to collect epilithic biofilm from a wide surface area. The total biomass was quantified and the periphyton was analyzed both for composition (diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and red algae) and for pigments. Disturbance, water temperature, physico-chemical conditions, nutrients, substrate diversity, and light availability were assessed concurrently with biofilm samplings. Results show sharp biofilm variations over months. In all sites, the disturbance was the primary factor reducing biomass and pigment content. Annually, all sites experienced similar turnover in periphyton composition mainly associated with light and water temperature. Overall, the study indicates that frequent quantitative investigations of biofilm help understand intra-annual variations and identify key drivers. In recent decades, the interest in responsive fibrous structures has surged, propelling them into diverse applications: from wearable textiles that adapt to their surroundings, to filtration membranes dynamically altering selectivity, these structures showcase remarkable versatility. Various stimuli, including temperature, light, pH, electricity, and chemical compounds, can serve as triggers to unleash physical or chemical changes in response. Processing methodologies such as weaving or knitting using responsive yarns, electrospinning, as well as coating procedures, enable the integration of responsive materials into fibrous structures. They can respond to these stimuli, and comprise shape memory materials, temperature-responsive polymers, chromic materials, phase change materials, photothermal materials, among others. The resulting effects can manifest in a variety of ways, from pore adjustments and altered permeability to shape changing, color changing, and thermal regulation. Potentilla supine, Potentilla multicaulis, Potentilla kleiniana and Potentilla longifolia were used as experimental materials, darkness was set for 12 h, light was set for 12 h temperature was 15, 20, 25, 30 ℃, respectively, and total darkness was set at 25 ℃, the effects of temperature and light on seed germination were studied. The results showed that the optimal germination temperature was 25 ℃ for Potentilla supine and Potentilla longifolia, the optimal germination temperature was 25-30 ℃ for Potentilla multicaulis, the optimal germination temperature was 20 ℃ for Potentilla kleiniana. Since the dawn of photochemistry 150 years ago, photoreactions have been conducted under polychromatic light. However, despite the pivotal role that photokinetics should naturally play for such reactive photosystems, the literature lacks a comprehensive description of that area. Indeed, one fails to identify explicit model integrated rate laws for these reactions, a characteristic type for their kinetic behavior, or their kinetic order. In addition, there is no consensus in the community on standardized investigative tools to evaluate the reactivity of these photosystems, nor are there venues for the discussion of such photokinetic issues. The present work is a contribution addressing some of these knowledge gaps. It proposes an unprecedented general formula capable of mapping out the kinetic traces of photoreactions under polychromatic light irradiation. This article quantitatively discusses several reaction situations, including the effects of initial reactant concentration and the presence of spectator molecules. It also develops a methodology for standardizing actinometers and defines and describes both the spectral range of highest reactivity and the photonic yield. The validity of the model equation has been proven by comparing its results to both theoretical counterparts and those generated by fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical calculations. Ascorbate is involved in numerous vital processes, in particular in response to abiotic but also biotic stresses whose frequency and amplitude increase with climate change. Ascorbate levels vary greatly depending on species, tissues, or stages of development, but also in response to stress. Since its discovery, the ascorbate biosynthetic pathway has been intensely studied and it appears that GDP- l -galactose phosphorylase (GGP) is the enzyme with the greatest role in the control of ascorbate biosynthesis. Like other enzymes of this pathway, its expression is induced by various environmental and also developmental factors. Although mRNAs encoding it are among the most abundant in the transcriptome, the protein is only present in very small quantities. In fact, GGP translation is repressed by a negative feedback mechanism involving a small open reading frame located upstream of the coding sequence (uORF). Moreover, its activity is inhibited by a PAS/LOV type photoreceptor, the action of which is counteracted by blue light. Consequently, this multi-level regulation of GGP would allow fine control of ascorbate synthesis. Indeed, experiments varying the expression of GGP have shown that it plays a central role in response to stress. This paper examines how the materiality of lighting influenced the development of ancient rabbinic teachings that would later become the foundations of Jewish law. Drawing on ideas and frameworks from scholarship on material religion, I bring together archaeological finds, experimental archaeology, and references to objects in classical rabbinic literature to argue that the ways that lighting was used provided the earliest rabbis with tools and fodder for developing new expressions of piety that could be performed in one's household. How lamps, oils, and wicks were used in Roman-era Palestine (second-third century CE) played an influential role in the development of rabbinic Judaism. I show this through rabbinic prescriptions on lighting lamps on Friday evening to mark the onset of the Sabbath, as the different wicks and oils created opportunities for one to choose to perform the custom in rabbinically-prescribed ways. I next demonstrate how the rabbis drew on common lighting practices to reinterpret biblical laws on the now-destroyed Jerusalem Temple cult into expressions of piety that can be performed in households throughout Roman Palestine. Introduction: Photokeratoconjunctivitis (PKC) is primarily caused by welding. However, inappropriate use of germicidal lamps, which have been widely used following the COVID-19 outbreak, can also cause PKC. Our goal in this study was to investigate the incidence of and changes in the causes of PKC during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: We conducted a single-center, retrospective observational study. The health records of patients who visited the emergency department in a tertiary care hospital from January 1, 2018-December 31, 2021 and were diagnosed with PKC, were reviewed. We then conducted an analysis to compare the characteristics of PKC before and after COVID-19 began and the features of PKC caused by welding and germicidal lamps. Results: There were 160PKCcases with a clear etiology before the COVID-19 pandemic and 147 cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. No significant differences in age and gender were detected between the two groups. The incidence of PKC induced by the use of germicidal lamps during the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly higher (10.2%) than the incidence before the pandemic (3.1%). The ratio of females to males in the germicidal lamp subgroup was significantly higher than the ratio in the welding subgroup. Limitations included incomplete information due to the retrospective nature of the study, underestimation of incidence, and possible recall bias. Conclusion: In the era of COVID-19, clinicians should be aware of the hazards of germicidal lamps. Although the COVID-19 pandemic seems to show signs of easing, new infectious diseases that require protective measures could still emerge in the future. Purpose: This work aims to assess the association of sleep duration with cardiometabolic risk (adiposity, blood pressure, lipids, albuminuria and A1C) and to investigate lifestyle factors (physical activity, light exposure, caffeine consumption and sugar consumption) associated with sleep duration in children. Methods: A nationally representative sample of 3907 children ages 6–17 years enrolled in NHANES from 2011 to 2014 was included in this cross‐sectional study. Sleep duration was defined as the daily average time spent sleeping over 7 days as measured by a physical activity monitor (PAM). Participants without valid sleep data for ≥95% of the study were excluded. Regression models were adjusted for age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI) Z score, physical activity and light exposure. Results: In adjusted regression models, longer sleep duration was associated with lower systolic blood pressure index (β = −3.63 * 10−5, 95% CI −6.99 * 10−5, −2.78 * 10−6, p = 0.035) and BMI Z score (β = −0.001, 95% CI −0.001, 0.000, p = 0.002). In logistic regression models, longer sleep duration was associated with lower odds of obesity (OR = 0.998, 95% CI 0.997, 0.999, p < 0.001) and overweight status (OR = 0.998, 95% CI 0.997, 0.999, p = 0.004). Greater light exposure (β = 6.64 * 10−5, 95% CI 3.50 * 10−5, 9.69 * 10−5, p < 0.001) and physical activity (β = 0.005, 95% CI 0.004, 0.006, p < 0.001) were associated with longer sleep. Conclusion: Longer sleep duration was associated with lower blood pressure and adiposity measures in children. To explore the variations in soil cadmium(Cd)activity and its influencing mechanism during the decomposition of rice straw after being returned to the field, this study took soil and rice straw as the research object and carried out soil cultivation experiments using treatments without(T0)and with rice straw(T1)to study the changes in the Cd concentration of rice straw and soil. Dissolved organic matter(DOM)was extracted from the rice straw and DOM treatments at different concentrations(CK, C1, and C2)set up under dark and light conditions, which further revealed the influence and mechanism of rice straw on soil Cd activity. The results showed that, in the soil cultivation experiments, the soil pH first increased and then decreased, Eh first decreased and then increased. And after 90 days of rice straw decomposition, the soil organic matter content increased; the Cd concentration of rice straw decreased by 27.93%; the total Cd concentration of soil increased by 15.79%; and the available Cd concentration of soil first decreased and then slowly increased, but was 9.15% lower than the initial value. The characterization of DOM extracted during the decomposition process of rice straw showed that the DOM of rice straw had high hydrophilicity and molecular weight, and contained functional groups, such as carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Under light conditions, DOM could increase the soil pH and reduce its available Cd concentration, and the higher the DOM concentration, the more it decreased; the DOM concentrations of C1 and C2 were 0.13 mg·kg-1 and 0.29 mg·kg-1 lower than those of CK, respectively. This study showed that rice straw with Cd could decrease soil Cd activity in a short period of time, and DOM, the main decomposition product of rice straw, could inhibit the migration of Cd in the soil environment under light conditions. The leaf is an important site for energy acquisition and material transformation in plants. Leaf functional traits and their trade-off mechanisms reflect the resource utilisation efficiency and habitat adaptation strategies of plants, and contribute to our understanding of the mechanism by which the distribution pattern of plant populations in arid and semi-arid areas influences the evolution of vegetation structure and function. We selected two natural environments, the tree-shrub community canopy area and the shrub-grass community open area in the transition zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau. We studied the trade-off relationships of leaf area with leaf midvein diameter and leaf vein density in Cotoneaster multiflorus using the standardised major axis (SMA) method. The results show that the growth pattern of C. multiflorus, which has small leaves of high density and extremely small vein diameters, in the open area. The water use efficiency and net photosynthetic rate of plants in the open area were significantly greater than those of plants growing in the canopy area. The adaptability of C. multiflorus to environments with high light and low soil water content reflects its spatial colonisation potential in arid and semiarid mountains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The crustose coralline alga Lithophyllum stictiforme is an important reef builder, forming coralligenous concretions in the Mediterranean Sea. This algal species complex is composed of eight cryptic species (or clades). The objective of our study was to compare light-dependent physiological processes within and between the two most abundant cryptic species (C1 and C4) of L. stictiforme from the Bay of Marseille (France). Physiological rates of respiration, photosynthesis and calcification were measured using incubation chambers under various irradiance levels and in the dark during the summer period. We compared the physiology of the C1 and C4 cryptic species of L. stictiforme among three algal groups: C1 (the most common in the Marseille area) from 28 m depth, C4 from the same site and depth, and C1 from a deeper site at 45 m depth. We found both interspecific (between C1 and C4) and intraspecific (within C1) physiological differences. Photosynthetic parameters showed acclimation to light (or depth) with higher values of initial slope of photosynthetic light response curve (α) and lower values of saturating irradiance (Ek) and compensating irradiance (Ec) for C1 from 45 m than for C1 and C4 from 28 m depth. At the shallower depth, significant physiological differences were observed between C1 and C4 with a higher value of maximum rate of gross photosynthesis (Pg max) in C4, suggesting better ability to grow under high irradiance. Light and dark calcification rates differed only between C4 from 28 m and C1 from 45 m depth, being intermediate in C1 from 28 m depth. On a 24 h basis, diel net calcification rates were significantly higher in specimens from the shallower waters than from the deeper waters. Physiological differences suggest physiological plasticity within the regionally dominant cryptic species C1 and species-specific physiological traits between the cryptic species C1 and C4. Photosynthesis and calcification rates differ among Lithophyllum stictiforme cryptic species. The regionally dominant cryptic species exhibits light-dependent physiological plasticity. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of poison-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. By binding to hemoglobin and other heme-containing proteins, CO reduces oxygen delivery and produces tissue damage. Prompt treatment of CO-poisoned patients is necessary to prevent acute and long-term complications. Oxygen therapy is the only available treatment. Visible light has been shown to selectively dissociate CO from hemoglobin with high efficiency without affecting oxygen affinity. Pulmonary phototherapy has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO elimination in CO poisoned mice and rats when applied directly to the lungs or via intra-esophageal or intra-pleural optical fibers. The extracorporeal removal of CO using a membrane oxygenator with optimal characteristic for blood exposure to light has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO illumination in rats with or without lung injury and in pigs. The development of non-invasive techniques to apply pulmonary phototherapy and the development of a compact, highly efficient membrane oxygenator for the extracorporeal removal of CO in humans may provide a significant advance in the treatment of CO poisoning. • Visible light selectively dissociates CO from hemoglobin without affecting oxygen binding. • Pulmonary phototherapy has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO elimination in mice and rats. • The extracorporeal removal of CO using phototherapy (ECCOR-P) accelerates CO elimination in small and large animals. • Pulmonary phototherapy and ECCOR-P development may provide a significant advance for treating CO poisoning. This essay addresses challenges that emerged during Advent through recent experience of lecturing at Berkeley Divinity School, the Episcopal Seminary at Yale. For many of my students, Advent 2020 presented particular challenges since they found that the recurring utilization of 'darkness' as a metaphor for sin and death did not sit easily with their commitment to anti-racist thought and practice. This essay does not attempt to provide a definitive model for how Anglicans might engage fully with Advent themes, but serves as a paper to 'think with' in which the author (a) engages with Michael Battle's work on Anglican spirituality and (b) describes how her own expertise on Gregory of Nyssa was brought to bear on present needs. The Advent focus on darkness and light, I propose, does not need to be circumvented but provides Anglicans who are attentive to the problems of racism with an opportunity to examine further their own approach to 'darkness'. By extracting energies from the environment and even the human body, and converting them into electrical energy, we can supply power to low‐consumption electronic devices. Energy harvesting works by inhibiting small amounts of ambient energies; otherwise, it is wasted in other forms such as heat, vibration, and light. In this paper, we aim to eliminate or minimize the dependence of portable electronic devices to the batteries, which have limited life times, service costs, handling, and environmental problems. This is accomplished via incorporating the hybrid energy‐harvesting techniques and designed to power (bio)medical devices in order to measure vital signs. In this circuit, by simultaneously harvesting RF, light, thermal, and solar (natural and artificial) energies, we were able to increase the reliability of continuous supply of electrical energy in energy‐harvesting systems by generating and storing maximum power from the environment. Supercapacitors are used as the energy storage elements so that there is no energy waste, and each system is constantly storing the electrical energy with the aid of a diode block. • LED light at 610 nm negatively impacts the survival of dopamine neurons in culture. • 610 nm LED light damages mouse mesencephalic and hiPSC-derived dopamine neurons. • Elevated dopamine in differentiated MN9D cells increases vulnerability to light. • 610 nm LED light increases ROS production in differentiated MN9D cells. • MN9D co-treatment with H2O2 boosts light induced ROS production and cytotoxicity. Our recent study revealed that fluorescent lamp light can penetrate deep into the brain of mice and rats leading to the development of typical histological characteristics associated with Parkinson's disease such as the loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. Monochromatic LED lights were thus used in this work to deepen our knowledge on the effects of the major wavelength peaks of fluorescent light on mouse and human dopaminergic cells. In particular, we exposed immortalized dopaminergic MN9D neuronal cells, primary cultures of mouse mesencephalic dopaminergic cells and human dopaminergic neurons differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) to different LED light wavelengths. We found that chronic exposure to LED light reduced overall undifferentiated MN9D cell number, with the most significant effects observed at wavelengths of 485 nm and 610 nm. Moreover, LED light especially at 610 nm was able to negatively impact on the survival of mouse mesencephalic dopaminergic cells and of human dopaminergic neurons derived from hiPSC. Notably, differentiated MN9D dopaminergic cells, which closely resemble mature dopamine neuronal phenotype, acutely exposed for 3 h at 610 nm, showed a clear increase in ROS production and cytotoxicity compared to controls undifferentiated MN9D cells. These increases were even more pronounced by the co-treatment with the oxidative agent H 2 O 2. Collectively, these findings suggest that specific wavelengths, particularly those capable of penetrating deep into the brain, could potentially pose an environmental hazard in relation to Parkinson's disease. Background: Patients with migraine often have poor sleep quality between and during migraine attacks. Furthermore, extensive research has identified photophobia as the most common and most bothersome symptom in individuals with migraine, second only to headache. Seeking the comfort of darkness is a common strategy for managing pain during an attack and preventing its recurrence between episodes. Given the well-established effects of daily light exposure on circadian activity rhythms and sleep quality, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between photophobia symptoms and sleep quality in a cohort of patients with migraine. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using existing data extracted from the American Registry for Migraine Research (ARMR). Participants with a migraine diagnosis who had completed the baseline questionnaires (Photosensitivity Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2)), and selected questions of the ARMR Sleep questionnaire were included. Models were created to describe the relationship of photophobia and photophilia with various sleep facets, including sleep quality (SQ), sleep disturbance (SDis), sleep onset latency (SOL), sleep-related impairments (SRI), and insomnia. Each model was controlled for age, sex, headache frequency, anxiety, and depression. Results: A total of 852 patients meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the analysis (mean age (SD) = 49.8 (13.9), 86.6% (n = 738) female). Those with photophobia exhibited significantly poorer sleep quality compared to patients without photophobia (p < 0.001). Photophobia scores were associated with SQ (p < 0.001), SDis (p < 0.001), SOL (p = 0.011), SRI (p = 0.020), and insomnia (p = 0.005) after controlling for age, sex, headache frequency, depression, and anxiety, signifying that higher levels of photophobia were associated with worse sleep-related outcomes. Conversely, photophilia scores were associated with better sleep-related outcomes for SQ (p < 0.007), SOL (p = 0.010), and insomnia (p = 0.014). Conclusion: Results suggest that photophobia is a significant predictor of poor sleep quality and sleep disturbances in migraine. These results underscore the necessity for comprehensive and systematic investigations into the intricate interplay between photophobia and sleep to enhance our understanding and develop tailored solutions for individuals with migraine. Background: Insomnia and eveningness are common and often comorbid conditions in youths. While cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has been suggested as a promising intervention, it remains unclear whether it is sufficient to also address circadian issues in youths. In addition, despite that light has been shown to be effective in phase-shifting one's circadian rhythm, there has been limited data on the effects of bright light therapy and its combination with CBT-I on sleep and circadian outcomes in youths. The current protocol outlines a randomised controlled trial that examines the efficacy of CBT-I and CBT-I plus bright light therapy (BLT) in reducing insomnia severity, improving mood symptoms and daytime functioning (e.g. sleepiness, fatigue, cognitive function), and improving subjective and objective sleep and circadian measures compared to a waitlist control group. Methods: We will carry out a randomised controlled trial (RCT) with 150 youths aged 12–24 who meet the criteria of insomnia and eveningness. Participants will be randomised into one of three groups: CBT-I with bright light therapy, CBT-I with placebo light, and waitlist control. Six sessions of CBT-I will be delivered in a group format, while participants will be currently asked to use a portable light device for 30 min daily immediately after awakening throughout the intervention period for bright light therapy. The CBT-I with light therapy group will receive bright constant green light (506 lx) while the CBT-I with placebo light group will receive the modified light device with the LEDs emitting less than 10 lx. All participants will be assessed at baseline and post-treatment, while the two active treatment groups will be additionally followed up at 1 month and 6 months post-intervention. The primary outcome will be insomnia severity, as measured by the Insomnia Severity Index. Secondary outcomes include self-reported mood, circadian, daytime functioning, and quality of life measures, as well as sleep parameters derived from actigraphy and sleep diary and neurocognitive assessments. Objective measures of the circadian phase using dim-light melatonin onset assessment and sleep parameters using polysomnography will also be included as the secondary outcomes. Discussion: This study will be the first RCT to directly compare the effects of CBT-I and BLT in youths with insomnia and eveningness. Spectroscopy is a scientific topic at the interface between Chemistry and Physics, which is taught at high school level in relation with its fundamental applications in Analytical Chemistry. In the first part of the paper, the topic of spectroscopy is analyzed having in mind the well-known Johnstone's triangle of chemistry education, putting in evidence the way spectroscopy is usually taught at the three levels of chemical knowledge: macroscopic/phenomenological, sub-microscopic/molecular and symbolic ones. Among these three levels, following Johnstone's recommendations the macroscopic one is the most useful for high school students who learn spectroscopy for the first time. Starting from these premises, in the second part of the paper, we propose a didactic sequence which is inspired by the historical evolution of spectroscopic instruments from the first spectroscopes invented by Gustav Kirchhoff and Robert Bunsen in 1860 to the UV–vis spectrophotometers which became common since the 1960s. The idea behind our research is to analyze the conceptual advancements through the history of spectroscopy and to identify the key episodes/experiments and spectroscopic instruments. For each of them, a didactic activity, typically an experiment, is then proposed underlining the relevant aspects from the chemistry education point of view. The present paper is the occasion to reflect on the potentialities of an historical approach combined with a laboratorial one, and to discuss the role of historical instruments and related technological improvements to teach spectroscopy. Tropical macroalgae serve importance ecological roles on coral reefs but can supplant corals in phase shifts as shown worldwide. Thus, it is important to understand their fundamental photophysiology and effects on calcification mechanisms. We examined organic δ13C, inorganic CaCO3 δ13C and δ18O, and organic %C, %N, C:N of abundant macroalgae on Little Cayman Island (LCI) reefs across a broad light gradient (5–2,000 μmol photons m−2 s−1). We hypothesized that LCI macroalgae utilize greater CO2 in low light environments as carbon concentration mechanisms (CCMs) to take up HCO3− have high energetic costs. We proposed that calcification mechanisms are also influenced by light and Ci-use strategies. LCI macroalgae had organic δ13C values (-12‰ to -25‰) indicative of CCMs and exhibited only a 1–3‰ δ13C depletion under irradiances < 5 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Light and phyla were significant in a mixed model explaining ~ 80% of variance in organic δ13C. Organic δ13C was a weak predictor and light insignificant in explaining inorganic δ13C values of thalli carbonates. Biogenic carbonate δ13C values were taxa-specific based on cluster analysis of δ13C:δd18O ratios, an indication of diverse calcification mechanisms. LCI macroalgal photosynthesis utilized CCMs across a broad range of irradiances, thus greater CO2 availability under ocean acidification is not likely to enhance community dominance of macroalgae of concern (e.g., Lobophora sp.) due to shifts in photophysiology. The mechanisms of Ci sequestration for photosynthesis appeared to be mostly uncoupled from calcification mechanisms that were diverse across phyla, likely due to distinct macroalgal forms, sites of calcification and carbonate structure. The electrophysiological function of the tongue involves complicated activities in taste sense, producing the perceptions of salty, sweet, bitter, and sour. However, therapies and prevention of taste loss arising from dysfunction in electrophysiological activity require further fundamental research. Optogenetics has revolutionized neuroscience and brought the study of sensory system to a higher level in taste. The year 2022 marks a decade of developments of optogenetics in taste since this technology was adopted from neuroscience and applied to the taste research. This review summarizes a decade of advances that define near‐term translation with optogenetic tools, and newly‐discovered mechanisms with the applications of these tools. Both entrainment and the direct effects of light are critically involved in the overt manifestation of circadian rhythms. The modern use of electric lights alters environmental lighting, leading to light exposure at inappropriate times to disturb circadian homeostasis for both human and wildlife. The light "pollution" and voluntary activities such as night shift work and transmeridian travelling have adverse consequences such as mood and metabolic disorders in humans. On the other hand, insufficient light exposure decreases neurotransmission from the locus ceruleus and dorsal raphe, leading to seasonal and nonseasonal affective disorders, while properly timed bright light is beneficial to mood and cognition. Given the critical and complex roles of light in mammalian physiology and behavior, it is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms. Light is an electromagnetic radiation that has visible and invisible wavelength spectrums. Visible light can only be detected by the eyes through the optic pathways. With the presence of the scalp, cranium, and meninges, the brain is seen as being protected from direct exposure to light. For that reason, the brain can be viewed as a black body lying inside a black box. In physics, a black body tends to be in thermal equilibrium with its environment and can tightly regulate its temperature via thermodynamic principles. Therefore, a healthy brain inside a black box should not be exposed to light. On the contrary, photobiomodulation, a form of light therapy for the brain, has been shown to have beneficial effects on some neurological conditions. The proposed underlying mechanisms are multiple. Herein, we present our intraoperative findings of rapid electrocorticographic brainwave changes when the brain was shone directly with different wavelengths of light during awake brain surgery. Our findings provide literature evidence for light's ability to influence human brain energy and function. Our proposed mechanism for these rapid changes is the presence of plasma-like energy inside the brain, which causes fast brain activities that are akin to lightning strikes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pathophysiology of functional bowel disorders is complex, involving disruptions in gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, gut–brain–microbiota interactions, and psychosocial factors. Light pollution, as an environmental stressor, has been associated with disruptions in circadian rhythms and the aggravation of stress-related conditions. In this study, we investigated the effects of environmental stress, particularly continuous light exposure, on intestinal motility and inflammation using zebrafish larvae as a model system. We also evaluated the efficacy of probiotics, specifically Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum), at alleviating stress-induced constipation. Our results showed that continuous light exposure in zebrafish larvae increased the cortisol levels and reduced the intestinal motility, establishing a stress-induced-constipation model. We observed increased inflammatory markers and decreased intestinal neural activity in response to stress. Furthermore, the expressions of aquaporins and vasoactive intestinal peptide, crucial for regulating water transport and intestinal motility, were altered in the light-induced constipation model. Administration of probiotics, specifically B. longum, ameliorated the stress-induced constipation by reducing the cortisol levels, modulating the intestinal inflammation, and restoring the intestinal motility and neural activity. These findings highlight the potential of probiotics to modulate the gut–brain axis and alleviate stress-induced constipation. The objective of the present study was to test the effects of an inpatient management system (CircadianCare) aimed at limiting the negative impact of hospitalization on sleep by enhancing circadian rhythmicity. Fifty inpatients were randomized to either CircadianCare (n = 25; 18 males, 62.4 ± 1.9 years) or standard of care (n = 25; 14 males, 64.5 ± 2.3 years). On admission, all underwent a full sleep-wake evaluation; they then completed daily sleep diaries and wore an actigraph for the whole length of hospitalization. On days 1 (T0), 7 (T1), and 14 (T2, if still hospitalized), salivary melatonin for dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) and 24-h skin temperature were recorded. In addition, environmental noise, temperature, and illuminance were monitored. Patients in the CircadianCare arm followed 1 of 3 schedules for light/dark, meal, and physical activity timings, based on their diurnal preference/habits. They wore short-wavelength-enriched light-emitting glasses for 45 min after awakening and short-wavelength light filter shades from 18:00 h until sleep onset. While the first, primary registered outcome (reduced sleep-onset latency on actigraphy or diary) was not met, based on sleep diaries, there was a trend (0.05 < p < 0.1) toward an advance in bedtime for CircadianCare compared to standard of care patients between T0 and T1. Similarly, DLMO time significantly advanced in the small group of patients for whom it could be computed on both occasions, with untreated ones starting from earlier baseline values. Patients sleeping near the window had significantly higher sleep efficiency, regardless of treatment arm. As noise fluctuation increased, so did the number of night awakenings, regardless of treatment arm. In conclusion, the CircadianCare management system showed positive results in terms of advancing sleep timing and the circadian rhythm of melatonin. Biotechnology has revolutionized plant propagation by providing plant tissue culture as a rising alternative platform to conventional methods. In the present scenario, plant tissue culture becomes the key technique for the large-scale production and conservation of germplasm, maintenance of genetic stability, and meets out the economic demands of plant and plant products. It is the science of artificially growing test tube plantlets under optimized microclimatic conditions isolated from the external environment. This micro-scale environment resembles the natural environment consisting of culture vessels, humidity, gases, light irradiation, spectrum, temperature, nutritional media, and its constituents as major growth-affecting factors. The efficient architectural development of any genotype depends on these factors and requires a specifically optimized climate. Here, we are reviewing the interaction of physical factors of in vitro artificial climate including culture vessel, light, and temperature with the developing plantlets. The outcomes can increase the understanding of the developmental response of plants toward their environment in the recently changing climatic conditions. Further, this can also eliminate the challenges of cost, labor, and timings and introduce the advancements of efficient large-scale production of plant and plant products which will be effective in fulfilling the population demands. * Context.--Photobleaching artifact occurs when fluorescence intensity decreases following light exposure. Slides stained with fluorescent techniques may be stored in the dark until primary diagnostics. Experimental evidence suggesting the rate of photobleaching and necessity of dark storage is lacking. Objective.--To compare photobleaching rate on direct immunofluorescence and Thioflavin T slides stored in ambient room light conditions and exposed to excitatory wavelengths. Design.--During 2 iterations of the experiment, 45 slides were prepared, 42 with immunofluorescent antibodies plus 3 with thioflavin, from skin and kidney biopsies. The experimental group was stored in room light conditions in comparison to the control in the dark, at room temperature. Further, 1 immunofluorescence slide and 1 thioflavin slide were exposed to excitatory fluorescent light for several hours. Significant photobleaching was defined as an integer decrease in score (scale, 0-3). Results.--Exposure times ranged from 152 to 3034 hours. Nine of the 42 immunofluorescence slides (21%) photobleached after a minimum exposure of 152 hours to room light, with no significant difference between the experimental and control groups (all P values >.05). The immunofluorescence slide exposed to fluorescent light for 4 hours showed marked photobleaching in the exposed field but not elsewhere. No thioflavin slides showed clinically significant photobleaching under any conditions. Conclusions.--Clinically significant photobleaching of slides exposed to room light may occur after a few days, but not a few hours (unless exposed to excitatory fluorescent light). Conversely, thioflavin-stained slides did not photobleach when exposed to ambient room air and photobleached only negligibly when exposed to excitatory fluorescent light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Species of holopelagic Sargassum are responsible for Caribbean golden tides, commonly known as 'Sargassum events'. These events mainly comprise Sargassum fluitans and Sargassum natans I, which are exposed to high levels of irradiance, but also self‐shading within their floating masses. In this study, we grew S. fluitans and S. natans I and acclimated them to low‐light conditions at 23°C in the laboratory to explore their responses to increasing light intensities. Photosynthesis, respiration, growth, and pigment content were evaluated over 3 weeks. S. fluitans and S. natans I photoacclimate to higher irradiances by decreasing their chlorophyll a and c contents. An increase in maximum photosynthesis and respiration rates was observed under high light, although differences occurred in the saturation irradiance and the initial slope of the photosynthesis versus irradiance curve. These adjustments were reflected in S. fluitans daily growth (from 2% to 7% d−1 at low to high light, respectively) and tissue nitrogen content (1.6–2.7%) but were absent in S. natans I (~1% d−1). The photosynthetic physiology of S. fluitans under these conditions suggests lower light requirements without compromising growth; however, under high light a higher photosynthetic performance was observed. Combining physiological and growth studies in holopelagic Sargassum species will serve as a baseline to understand and explain the success and overgrowth of these species along the Caribbean coast. An OSV word order that deviates from the canonical SVO word order is typically viewed as derived through movement. This theory has been widely supported by psycholinguistic studies showing that the displaced constituents are mentally reactivated at the gap positions. However, some cognitive-functionalists have proposed an alternative account: in a topic-prominent language like Chinese, topic is the basic unit of a sentence that delimits the frame within which the main predication holds. The present study adopts the cross-modal antecedent priming technique to test whether the sentence-initial object is structurally associated with the verb in native speakers' online processing. Results of two experiments show that the sentence-initial object is not associated with the verb whatsoever, neither lexically nor structurally, shedding light on the typological characteristics of Chinese as a topic-prominent language. Summary: How plants distribute biomass among organs influences resource acquisition, reproduction and plant–plant interactions, and is essential in understanding plant ecology, evolution, and yield production in agriculture. However, the genetic mechanisms regulating allocation responses to the environment are largely unknown.We studied recombinant lines of wheat (Triticum spp.) grown as single plants under sunlight and simulated canopy shade to investigate genotype‐by‐environment interactions in biomass allocation to the leaves, stems, spikes, and grains. Size‐corrected mass fractions and allometric slopes were employed to dissect allocation responses to light limitation and plant size.Size adjustments revealed light‐responsive alleles associated with adaptation to the crop environment. Combined with an allometric approach, we demonstrated that polymorphism in the DELLA protein is associated with the response to shade and size. While a gibberellin‐sensitive allelic effect on stem allocation was amplified when plants were shaded, size‐dependent effects of this allele drive allocation to reproduction, suggesting that the ontogenetic trajectory of the plant affects the consequences of shade responses for allocation.Our approach provides a basis for exploring the genetic determinants underlying investment strategies in the face of different resource constraints and will be useful in predicting social behaviours of individuals in a crop community. [Display omitted] In this research, new injectable and in situ photocurable elastomeric nanohybrids have been fabricated from polyalphaolefin (PAO) resins and halloysite nanofiller. In this regard, the co-oligomerization of long α-olefin monomers (C6, C8 and C10) with alkenol counterparts was carried out via a simple cationic route to provide OH-functionalized PAOs. The newly formed PAO type copolymer resins as well as halloysite nanoclay were then equipped with photocurable C C bonds containing an acrylate moiety. After the characterization of the final chemical substances and also of the intermediate structures, experimentally and computationally by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the neat treated PAO and PAO/halloysite nanohybrids were subjected to a curing process by visible light irradiation (λ ∼ 475 nm, blue light). The crosslinking efficiency of the neat resins and the formed nanohybrid was evaluated using shrinkage strain–time curves and equilibrium swelling method. The suggested nanohybrid is not only biocompatible (96 % in the MTT assay), and hydrophilic (with a water contact angle of 61°), but also exhibits an easy, fast and robust curing process with great potential for coating and sealing technologies for medical devices. Duckweeds span 36 species of free-floating aquatic organisms with body sizes ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm, where each plant body plan is reduced to a largely leaf-like structure. As an emerging crop, their fast growth rates offer potential for cultivation in closed systems. We describe a novel UK collection derived from low light (dLL) or high light (dHL) habitats, profiled for growth, photosynthesis, and photoprotection (non-photochemical quenching, NPQ) responses. Twenty-three accessions of three Lemna species and one Spirodela polyrhiza were grown under relatively low light (LL: 100 μmol m–2 s–1) and high light (HL: 350 μmol m–2 s–1) intensities. We observed broad within- and between-species level variation in photosynthesis acclimation. Duckweeds grown under HL exhibited a lower growth rate, biomass, chlorophyll, and quantum yield of photosynthesis. In HL compared with LL, carotenoid de-epoxidation state and NPQ were higher, whilst PSII efficiency (φPSII) and Chl a : b ratios were unchanged. The dLL plants showed relatively stronger acclimation to HL compared with dHL plants, especially Lemna japonica accessions. These achieved faster growth in HL with concurrent higher carotenoid levels and NPQ, and less degradation of chlorophyll. We conclude that these data support local adaptation to the light environment in duckweed affecting acclimation in controlled conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Formation of functional pollen and successful fertilization rely on the spatial and temporal regulation of anther and pollen development. This process responds to environmental cues to maintain optimal fertility despite climatic changes. Arabidopsis transcription factors basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) 10, 89, and 91 were previously thought to be functionally redundant in their control of male reproductive development, however here we show that they play distinct roles in the integration of light signals to maintain pollen development under different environmental conditions. Combinations of the double and triple bHLH10,89,91 mutants were analysed under normal (200 μmol m–2 s–1) and low (50 μmol m–2 s–1) light conditions to determine the impact on fertility. Transcriptomic analysis of a new conditionally sterile bhlh89,91 double mutant shows differential regulation of genes related to sexual reproduction, hormone signal transduction, and lipid storage and metabolism under low light. Here we have shown that bHLH89 and bHLH91 play a role in regulating fertility in response to light, suggesting that they function in mitigating environmental variation to ensure fertility is maintained under environmental stress. Objectives: This study aimed to extend the literature by analyzing immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgE, IgG, IgG2, IgG3, and IgM antibody levels in periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) patients. Patients and methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the antibody test results of 20 pediatric patients (10 males, 10 females; mean age: 2.5±1.5 years; range, 0.5 to 5.4 years) with and without flare who were initially evaluated for a number of underlying diseases due to periodic fever/infectious symptoms but then diagnosed with PFAPA between January 2015 and December 2020. Antibody levels were determined by chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay. The results were retrospectively compared with a group of healthy children after the PFAPA diagnosis was confirmed. Results: The chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay revealed 35%, 65%, 20%, 86.6%, and 55% of PFAPA cases with low serum levels of IgA, IgG, IgG2, IgG3, and IgM respectively, while 56.2% had high IgE levels. Moreover, low serum levels of at least two antibody classes or subclasses were reported in 80% of the PFAPA children. While cases with low IgG serum levels were with the highest incidence rates among the low IgG3 PFAPA patient population, both high IgE and low IgM cases were common in the rest of the patients. Conclusion: Our results suggest an association between PFAPA and low serum antibody levels, particularly of IgG3. Future studies are needed to confirm our conclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although darkness, which is generally regarded as the opposite of light (al-nūr, radiance) in terms of negation, describes the absence of light, it is also possible to say that it expresses the brightest form of light. There are theoretical approaches to both interp-retations in the philosophical literature. According to the first interpretation, darkness consisting of matter and form and existing in hylomorphic and composite structure is associated with matter and chaos, and light is associated with form and order. The light corresponds to the transcendent and divine, and darkness corresponds to the immanent and material. However, in some interpretations of God's unknowability in the apophatic context, it is seen that darkness is used as well as light, and this concept is given a pivotal and central dimension in the explanation of unknowability. In this context, darkness is characterized by brightness, not dullness or obscurity, since it is associated with the divine realm. Therefore, bright darkness, beyond negating light, represents the peak of affirmation, and even light is in a position to be the negative of darkness in terms of making light. In mystical theology, the fact that the essences of things are not known within the framework of truth, as in the divine realm, from an epistemological point of view, expands the area of darkness, and in a sense, the entire field of existence acquires an unknown, and, therefore dark content. In this context, ḍiyāʾ (illumination), which is light compared to darkness and darkness compared to light, is in the position of intermediate light, making possible to see, perceive, and reason between light and darkness. This study discusses darkness starting from religious and mythological texts, within the framework of the views of ancient Greeks such as Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus, Neoplatonic Christian mystics such as Gregory of Nyssa and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and sufi mystics such as Maḥmūd Shabistarī and Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī. The study also evaluates the concepts of knowledge and ignorance within the scope of light and darkness, emphasizes on the basic distinctions between philosophical views and mystical theological interpretations and emphasizes on religious metaphors of night and day. In the study, it is seen that darkness is considered with different contexts in philosophy and mystical theology; in philosophy darkness is the absence of light, while in mystical theology some interpretations of darkness are considered as the intensity of light. This paper presents a study on color preferences among a sample of Ghanaian adults. Two surveys were conducted, with a total of 143 participants (50 in Survey 1, and 93 in Survey 2). The participants completed both printed and digital questionnaires to gather data on their color preferences. The results showed that blue was the most preferred color by both males and females in general, but not for specific items. In survey 2, a chi-square test on categorical variables revealed a significant relationship between gender and preference for light, dark, or bright colors (p=0.025), as well as gender and number of preferred colors per personal item (p=0.02). However, no significant relationships were found between gender and change of colors from childhood (p=0.73), gender and number of preferred colors (p=0.204), gender and most preferred colors (p=0.216), age, and the number of preferred colors (p=0.19). Interestingly, 66.3% of the participants in Survey 2 indicated that their preferred colors were based on innate attraction, regardless of whether their color preferences had changed or remained the same since childhood. Overall, blue and red were the most preferred colors, with a score of 34.4%. These findings provide valuable insights for design practitioners and communicators and offer a basis for future research on color preferences among Ghanaians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soybean downgrading due to immature (green and semi-green) color at harvest, caused by frost conditions, poses a significant loss to producers and processors. After harvest, drying and storage are important for preserving the quality of the harvested produce. This study investigated the impact of drying on color change in harvested immature soybeans and the effect of the soybean moisture content, storage environment (temperature, light, and aeration), and storage period on color change and oil quality of immature soybeans. Soybeans were harvested at three different maturity stages: R6 (green) and R7 (semi-green) in pods and R8 (fully matured) in seed. The soybeans in pods were dried, shelled, and conditioned to moisture contents of 12% and 17% (wet basis) prior to storage in 12 storage chamber (box) environments. The chambers were built to have four environments of "light" and "no light" with and without aeration and were stored at temperatures of either 4 °C or 23.5 °C for 24 weeks. Samples were taken every 2 weeks for 2 months and then bimonthly in storage. Soybean color change during drying and their chlorophyll, color, peroxide value (PV), and free fatty acid (FFA) status in storage were determined. Visual observation showed that R6 (green) soybean color faded after 48 h drying, which was supported with a colorimeter reading as the "a" value increased from −8.89 to −3.83 and −8.89 to −1.71 with 37 °C and 27 °C drying temperatures, respectively. The ANOVA analysis showed that light had the greatest contribution (~81%) to the color change compared to the other three storage environment factors of temperature (~9.1%), aeration (~8%), and moisture content (~1.5%) with <10% separate effects. During storage, the R6 green and R7 semi-green soybean color continued to fade with color a-values that exceeded the initial values of the R8 matured (control) by 353% and 350%, respectively, by the end of the storage period. Low amounts of peroxide and free fatty acids (FFA) were recorded throughout the storage period. Only the FFA of 17% M.C. soybeans stored at 23.5 °C exceeded acceptable limits at the end of the storage period. Exposing immature (green and semi-green) soybeans to light resulted in the fading of the green color. Additionally, an analysis of reporter metabolites emphasizes central carbon, purine, and fatty acid metabolisms, uncovering crucial processes for C. militaris adaptation to light exposure. The genome-scale metabolic model (GSMM) of Cordyceps militaris provides a comprehensive basis of carbon assimilation for cell growth and metabolite production. However, the model with a simple mass balance concept shows limited capability to probe the metabolic responses of C. militaris under light exposure. This study, therefore, employed the transcriptome-integrated GSMM approach to extend the investigation of C. militaris's metabolism under light conditions. Through the gene inactivity moderated by metabolism and expression (GIMME) framework, the iPS1474-tiGSMM model was furnished with the transcriptome data, thus providing a simulation that described reasonably well the metabolic responses underlying the phenotypic observation of C. militaris under the particular light conditions. The iPS1474-tiGSMM obviously showed an improved prediction of metabolic fluxes in correlation with the expressed genes involved in the cordycepin and carotenoid biosynthetic pathways under the sucrose culturing conditions. Further analysis of reporter metabolites suggested that the central carbon, purine, and fatty acid metabolisms towards carotenoid biosynthesis were the predominant metabolic processes responsible in light conditions. This finding highlights the key responsive processes enabling the acclimatization of C. militaris metabolism in varying light conditions. Top‐down and bottom‐up factors and their interaction highlight the interdependence of resources and consumer impacts on food webs and ecosystems. Variation in the strength of upwelling‐mediated ecological controls (i.e., light availability and herbivory) between early and late succession stages is less well understood from the standpoint of influencing algal functional group composition. We experimentally tested the effect of light, grazing, and disturbance on rocky intertidal turf‐forming algal communities. Studies were conducted on the South Island of New Zealand at Raramai on the east coast (a persistent downwelling region) and Twelve Mile Beach on the west coast (an intermittent upwelling region). Herbivory, light availability, and algal cover were manipulated and percent cover of major macroalgal functional groups and sessile invertebrates were measured monthly from October 2017 to March 2018. By distinguishing between algal functional groups and including different starting conditions in our design, we found that the mosaic‐like pattern of bare rock intermingled with diverse turf‐forming algae at Twelve Mile Beach was driven by a complex array of species interactions, including grazing, predation, preemptive competition and interference competition, colonization rates, and these interactions were modulated by light availability and other environmental conditions. Raramai results contrasted with those at Twelve Mile Beach in showing stronger effects of grazing and relatively weak effects of other interactions, low colonization rates of invertebrates, and light effects limited to crustose algae. Our study highlights the potential importance of an upwelling‐mediated 3‐way interaction among herbivory, light availability, and preemption in structuring contrasting low rocky intertidal macroalgal communities. Background: Breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) is primarily managed at home and can stem from physical exertion and emotional distress triggers. Beyond these triggers, the impact of ambient environment on pain occurrence and intensity has not been investigated. This study explores the impact of environmental factors on the frequency and severity of breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) in the home context from the perspective of patients with advanced cancer and their primary family caregiver. Methods: A health monitoring system was deployed in the homes of patient and family caregiver dyads to collect self-reported pain events and contextual environmental data (light, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, ambient noise.) Correlation analysis examined the relationship between environmental factors with: 1) individually reported pain episodes and 2) overall pain trends in a 24-hour time window. Machine learning models were developed to explore how environmental factors may predict BTCP episodes. Results: Variability in correlation strength between environmental variables and pain reports among dyads was found. Light and noise show moderate association (r = 0.50–0.70) in 66% of total deployments. The strongest correlation for individual pain events involved barometric pressure (r = 0.90); for pain trends over 24-hours the strongest correlations involved humidity (r = 0.84) and barometric pressure (r = 0.83). Machine learning achieved 70% BTCP prediction accuracy. Conclusion: Our study provides insights into the role of ambient environmental factors in BTCP and offers novel opportunities to inform personalized pain management strategies, remotely support patients and their caregivers in self-symptom management. This research provides preliminary evidence of the impact of ambient environmental factors on BTCP in the home setting. We utilized real-world data and correlation analysis to provide an understanding of the relationship between environmental factors and cancer pain which may be helpful to others engaged in similar work. This paper shows how residential high-rise developments in London deteriorate the living conditions for existing residents and set a legal precedent for distributing harm unevenly across the population. The paper unpacks the contentious decision-making process in one of several local planning applications in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets that ended in a spur of high-profile public planning inquiries between 2017 and 2019. The Enterprise House inquiry shows how, among other things, a loss of daylight, sunlight and outlook, and an increased sense of enclosure, affect already marginalised residents in neighbouring buildings disproportionately, elevating light to a legal category for assessing harm and addressing social injustice in the vertical city. The paper adopts a forensic approach to interrogate four instances during the public inquiry, in which numerical evidence of material harm resulting from a loss in daylight, sunlight and outlook was made to appear and disappear. The translation of scientific evidence into legal evidence is performed through the act of claiming 'truthful' representations of 'real life experiences' of light in digital visualisations. By revealing how material harm resulting from vertical development is normalised and thus naturalised in the planning inquiry, the paper demonstrates how 'light' violence is exercised in vertical development.
