This discursive paper adopts the Heideggerian phenomenological approach combined with a polyphonic perspective. In this context, ‘polyphony’ refers to validating multiple voices in conversations between healthcare professionals and persons living with a Life Limiting Illness (LLI). Living with LLI is not just a medical condition but a deeply transformative and challenging experience that profoundly impacts individuals’ lives. From diagnosis to death, persons living with LLI find themselves in an interactive yet often disempowering space that is defined by their values, beliefs, and preferences. Significantly, their journey is strongly influenced by that of healthcare professionals and available treatment and disease management resources. This tangled web of intricate and sometimes competing values and preferences and available treatment options makes it difficult to distinguish the voices of those experiencing the illness from the polyphony of voices in that space. The use of polyphony in this study sheds light on the diverse dimensions of their experiences, underscoring the importance of context, personal meaning, and subjective perspectives.
