Estimates of the land area occupied by wind energy differ by orders of magnitude due to data scarcity and inconsistent methodology. We developed a method that combines machine learning-based imagery analysis and geographic information systems and examined the land area of 318 wind farms (15,871 turbines) in the U.S. portion of the Western Interconnection. We found that prior land use and human modification in the project area are critical for land-use efficiency and land transformation of wind projects. Projects developed in areas with little human modification have a land-use efficiency of 63.8 ± 8.9 W/m2 (mean ±95% confidence interval) and a land transformation of 0.24 ± 0.07 m2/MWh, while values for projects in areas with high human modification are 447 ± 49.4 W/m2 and 0.05 ± 0.01 m2/MWh, respectively. We show that land resources for wind can be quantified consistently with our replicable method, a method that obviates >99% of the workload using machine learning. To quantify the peripheral impact of a turbine, buffered geometry can be used as a proxy for measuring land resources and metrics when a large enough impact radius is assumed (e.g., >4 times the rotor diameter). Our analysis provides a necessary first step toward regionalized impact assessment and improved comparisons of energy alternatives.

Buildings can play an important role in reducing GHG emissions through increased energy efficiency. The European Commission mandates that all new buildings should be “zero emission buildings” (ZEB), aiming at a zero GHG emission building stock by 2050. The extent to which ZEB can contribute to reduced GHG emissions, however, varies between countries, due to different energy systems. It is also important to consider other environmental effects to avoid that climate benefits come with unintended consequences. Here, we explore the life-cycle environmental performance for a ZEB in a case where electricity and heating are largely fossil-free. The assessment concentrates on i) environmental impact of the use stage in relation to the product stage, ii) the interrelation between different energy sources, with focus on household electricity, and iii) the performance for more impact categories than primary energy use and climate change. While our results generally support the use of ZEBs from an environmental perspective, they also show that the climate benefit in this setting is marginal. However, given that energy systems are connected and energy savings in one place can reduce the demand for fossil energy elsewhere, the climate benefit of ZEBs is likely underestimated. Besides methodological implications for future studies, this indicates that current EU policy is promising, as incentives for implementation of ZEBs are unaffected by domestic effects. In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in response to growing global concern about climate change, resource scarcity and environmental impacts on ecosystems. This agenda also places high demands on industrial manufacturing systems to promote sustainability. Biologicalisation of manufacturing processes can be a promising approach to contribute to the sustainability goals in industrial production systems. In recent years, biomachining has emerged as a field of research in biologicalisation with potential advantages compared to conventional surface treatment methods of metals, such as chemical etching. Surface structuring of metals plays a crucial role in various industrial applications, such as pre-coating preparation, hierarchical structuring, superhydrophobic surfaces and geometries. To assess the environmental impacts of biomachining, this paper focuses on environmental impacts of utilizing the bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans compared to a conventional chemical etching process with cupric chloride solution for surface structuring of a metal specimen. The study examines the environmental impact of both processes, considering all relevant material and energy flows from cradle to gate for multiple environmental impact categories. In doing so, the environmental impacts of each process can be comprehensively evaluated and compared, and hotspots for future improvement of the biomachining process can be identified. On current lab-scale, the results indicate higher impacts for the biomachining process in most categories compared to the chemical etching process, mainly due to the energy demand for pre-cultivation and preparation of the biomachining solution. The current study has been conducted comparing two different cutting approaches in order to turning of pure Titanium (grade II) alloy. The Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) and an upgraded version of MQL using Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) have been compared. Furthermore, Life cycle assessment has been executed using SimaPro version 9.0 in combination with ReCiPe midpoint (H) impact assessment method. A careful analysis of the twenty-six experiments, designed based on response surface methodology divulged that, overall process within the chosen system boundaries significantly affected most of environmental indicators (EI's) related to toxicity namely freshwater ecotoxicity, marine ecotoxicity, terrestrial ecotoxicity, human carcinogenic toxicity and human non carcinogenic toxicity. With the most preformed impact at the parametric combinations (vc = 250, f = 0.05, ae = 0.4) and (vc = 275, f = 0.5, ae = 0.5) for both cooling strategies Furthermore, the overall normalized impact serve for RHVT was found to be lower than the MQL techniques, accentuating its usefulness towards sustainability improvement. It has also been found that majority of the impact contribution has been made by the EI's related to human health, when compared to the EIs related to resources or ecosystems. The building construction sector is the second largest contributor to greenhouse gases (GHG), especially CO2 emissions, and final energy consumption among all industries. Industrial production of building materials such as steel and cement and the use of traditional construction methods exacerbate these environmental issues. In Iran, most of the buildings are still traditionally built, which consume a lot of energy and emit a lot of pollutants into the air. This research aims to investigate the impact of two distinct construction methods, namely the cast in situ (CIS) concrete system and the industrialized building system (IBS), on GHG emissions and embodied energy consumption within the context of Tehran City. Notably, this study represents the first attempt to explore the relationship between air pollution in Iran's metropolises and construction methods. IBS, which originated in Malaysia, is considered as an alternative method, while CIS represents the conventional approach. To achieve this goal, by means of a scientific approach based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) tool, the life cycle of each of the selected construction methods in the stages of preparation of materials and the main construction process was meticulously modeled in the software called GaBi. The results showed that the IBS method, during the initial phase of material preparation, exhibited embodied energy and global warming potential (GWP) values of 3089.23 MJ and 145.63 kg CO2-eq, respectively. Significantly, these values demonstrated a reduction of 38.2 and 18.43 percent in comparison with those associated with the CIS technique. During the construction phase, the aforesaid parameters of the IBS method were evaluated to be 27.15% and 3.08% lower than those of the CIS method and were determined to be 812.33 MJ and 58.6 kg CO2-eq, respectively. By comparing IBS and CIS methods, it was concluded that the use of the IBS method yields superior outcomes with regard to GWP and embodied energy and the long-term advantages of industrialization can significantly justify its high costs. Renewable energy is one of environmentally friendly strategies to reduce the environmental pollution caused by energy generation from fossil fuels and reach sustainable development. In this current study, a geothermal driven multi-generation system to provide power, heating, freshwater, hydrogen and oxygen demands is investigated. The main components are encompassed single-pressure organic Rankine cycle, reverse osmosis desalination unit, domestic water heater and proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. For this purpose, energy, exergy, economic and exergoenvironmental (4E) evaluations are accomplished upon proposed system. Non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm has been considered as optimization method that leads to reveal the maximum and minimum of exergy efficiency and total annual cost (TAC) rate as two objective functions. In addition, sensitivity analysis is performed to reveal the roles of design parameters on the system performance and productivity from different standpoints. The optimal results showed that exergy efficiency and TAC increased, as operating temperature of PEM electrolyzer enhances. In terms of economic analysis, the most percentage of total investment cost is pertained to RO unit which was 58.05%. In addition, exergy efficiency and TAC of the proposed system were 30.42% and 255.96 $/h, respectively. As well, the mass flow rate of freshwater, hydrogen, oxygen, net power output and heating production were obtained 3146.7 m3/day, 0.42 m3/day, 3.35 m3/day, 1556.2 kW and 18,586 kW, respectively. Furthermore, by taking into account exergoenvironmental analysis, the environmental impact rate of power, heating, freshwater and hydrogen–oxygen production 2.331 × 10−5 pts/kJh, 3.668 × 10−3 pts/kJh, 1.45 pts/m3h and 11.42 pts/kgh, respectively. This paper addresses the three-dimensional concurrent engineering and presents an integrated mathematical model to determine design and production process of each part of product and its supply chain network with a sustainable approach. Demand is assumed to be design-dependent, and supply chain under study is closed-loop. From sustainability viewpoint, total profit in planning horizon is considered as economic index, and an approach based on life cycle assessment is implemented to calculate environmental index. In this approach, the eco-costs method is utilized to quantify life cycle environmental impact of activities. Also, a ratio based on job creation opportunity and employment rate is considered as social index. To show the performance of the proposed mathematical model, data for a home appliance producer from Iran is utilized. In the case of building demolition, the construction industry increasingly prioritizes sustainable waste management and environmental protection. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to assess two scenarios to evaluate the environmental impacts of four methods (demolition, transport, recycling, and landfills). To conduct an Attributional LCA, the SimaPro software suite and Ecoinvent v.3 Life Cycle Inventory database were applied. LCA showed that construction and demolition (CDW) management has major environmental effects on global warming, fine particulate matter formation, human carcinogenic toxicity, and human non-carcinogenic toxicity. The results indicate the beneficial environmental impact of two waste management scenarios. The extent to which recycling waste from building demolition can benefit the environment is dependent on the type of material being recycled. Copper recycling can reduce the building industry's environmental impact. Human non-carcinogenic toxicity is the most important and beneficial factor. Previous research has largely neglected this stage. The findings indicated that environmental conditions have a significance impact and, accordingly, the optimal scenario. This study provides stakeholders with a road map for making informed decisions regarding the application of CDW management. Cement production is linked to heavy environmental load with exigences for reduction and substitution of raw materials and energy demands/sources. Recently, with the potential commercial discovery of natural gas (NG) reserves in Lebanon, discussions on the viability of fuel-switching, from petcoke (kiln processes) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) (reciprocating engines) to NG in the cement sector emerged. To that aim three alternative scenarios (SCx) were suggested: shifting petcoke to NG in kiln processes (SC1); shifting reciprocating engines from HFO to NG (SC2); shifting kiln processes and reciprocating engines to NG (SC3). An economic analysis indicated that SC2 is the only viable option. This paper presents a new combination of life cycle impact assessment (LCA) and monetization to quantify environmental impacts for the decision-making processes, within the Lebanese context. The LCA was conducted using primary data and SimaPro v8.5.2.0. The functional unit (FU) was 1 kg of cement. IPCC 2013 GWP 100a V1.03, Cumulative Energy Demand (CED) V1.10 ReCiPe 2016 E v1.02 impact assessment and Stepwise2006 (V1.05.3) monetary valuation methods were used. Results indicated that all scenarios lead to a reduced carbon footprint: 0.016 kgCO2eq., 0.0008 kgCO2eq. and 0.0168 kgCO2eq. for SC1, SC2 and SC3, respectively, from the baseline 1.0327 kgCO2eq.. The baseline CED was 5.06 MJ, and 4.5 MJ, 4.91 MJ and 4.35 MJ for SC1, SC2, and SC3, respectively. SC3 had the lowest environmental burden, followed by SC1 and SC2. Damage assessment results indicated that all alternative scenarios reduce environmental damage, while SC3 brought the highest benefit followed by SC1 and SC2, respectively. Monetization results/ FU indicated a cost burden of 25.54 US¢, 24,64 US¢, 25.5 US¢ and 24.6 US¢ for baseline, SC1, SC2 and SC3, respectively. Finally, the best fit option, after internalizing the environmental cost, shifted from SC2 to SC3 indicating the merits of combining LCA and monetization into decision-making processes. Removal of Lindane pesticide from the environment is of utmost requirement. Besides, production of adsorbents to remove Lindane releases other pollutants and greenhouse gases into the environment. Therefore, in this study, the application of environmentally friendly low-cost, and readily available Halodule uninervis seagrass powder (SG) as an adsorbent is reported for the removal of Lindane from contaminated water. The environmental footprint of SG production was investigated using life cycle inventory (LCI). To investigate the adsorption parameters and reduce the wastage associated with the one variable at a time (OVAT) conventional investigation approach, response surface method (RSM) and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches were engaged. However, to investigate the isotherm and adsorption kinetics, OVAT parameter optimization was conducted. It is found that 16 h and 24 °C were the optimum time and temperature, respectively, and pH does not affect Lindane removal. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models were found the best to describe Lindane adsorption onto SG which was seen to be exothermic (− 29.17 kJ mol−1). The spent SG was found to be reusable in the synthetic wastewater with a value of 74% removal efficiency. XPS characterization results indicated that Lindane is physically adsorbed onto SG. LCI data showed that SG adsorbent has promising performance with very low negative environmental impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Mycelium-based leather is a leather-like material composed of filamentous, branched, and fibrous vegetative parts of fungi, specifically fungal mycelium. This study aimed to assess the production process of mycelium-based leather in Indonesia, especially in the Mylea™ manufacturing process, by considering its environmental impact through a life cycle assessment. Method: The scope of the study starts from the cradle where mycelium is cultivated to the gate of the leather process. A functional unit of 1 m2 natural Mylea™ grade A was used as a reference. The inventory of mycelia as foreground data was gathered from the Indonesian factory with supporting data taken from relevant literature. The infrastructure is not included within the system boundaries. The ISO 14040 and 14044 standards were followed during the analysis. This study used the software OpenLCA 2.02 to carry out the impact assessment and used the Ecoinvent database v3.8. The life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was carried out using the CML-IA baseline method with 11 impact categories. A sensitivity and uncertainty analysis were conducted to evaluate the environmental impact. Results: The finishing process is the main contributor to all the environmental impact categories. The LCIA results revealed that 1 m2 of natural Mylea™ grade A produces 57.15 kg of CO2 eq. Energy usage in the form of electricity consumption is the major cause, contributing 46.53 kg of CO2 eq to the total carbon footprint, followed by cotton at 6.67 kg of CO2 eq and (ethylene–vinyl acetate) EVA glue at 1.03 kg of CO2 eq. The finishing process, which uses cotton fabric, emerged as the primary environmental hotspot, contributing significantly to most impact categories, such as terrestrial ecotoxicity potential (TEP), abiotic depletion potential (ADP), and global warming potential (GWP100a). Alternative energy scenarios, including hydropower and solar energy, were examined, revealing their potential to reduce the environmental impact. Conclusion: The environmental impacts of mycelium-based leather production were identified in 11 categories. According to the findings, the most critical input parameter is the use of electricity sources. Purpose: The aims of this scoping review were to examine the extent to which food packaging life cycle assessment studies included food waste specifically attributed to food packaging, overall and by food category; synthesise outcomes in terms of the ability of packaging solutions to minimise food waste; and identify areas of future research to provide a comprehensive understanding of where future packaging LCA efforts could be directed. Methods: This article presents a scoping review of 23 peer-reviewed papers on food packaging LCAs that explicitly accounted for packaging-related food waste. The articles were analysed by the major food product categories examined in the LCAs. The review examined the: (i) distribution of LCAs across food product categories, (ii) packaging materials/solutions assessed, (iii) food waste related packaging functions evaluated, and (iv) additional factors that influence packaging-related food waste (e.g., consumer behaviour). Results and discussion: Most of the reviewed LCAs focused on food categories associated with high environmental impacts such as animal-based products (meat and dairy) and highly perishable products (fresh fruits and vegetables). Plastic was the most frequently evaluated packaging material. Shelf-life extension was the most evaluated food waste related packaging attribute, and was found to play an important role in preventing food waste, especially within high impact food categories. Conclusions: The small number of studies identified in this review highlights a need for greater attention to food waste across more food categories in future food packaging LCAs. Introduction: Unplanned events such as accidents and more massive black-swan events are contingent to modern technology. However, varying approaches and inconsistent guidelines make the inclusion of unplanned events in life cycle assessment (LCA) uncommon and challenging. This paper discusses the relevance of considering unplanned events in LCA and shows how they can be included in LCA practice. Method: A theoretical background to the concepts of black swans, accidents, and unplanned events is first provided. We then propose a method for how unplanned events can be included in LCA practice, illustrated through three cases: (i) a sabotage in the energy system, (ii) an accident in the use phase, and (iii) a sudden policy change. Results: The results show that unplanned events can be included and may significantly affect LCA results, sometimes even fulfilling criteria for black-swan events. Conclusions: We suggest that unplanned events should be included in LCA when relevant, e.g. as one scenario in LCAs of product systems sensitive to accidents. We also suggest that changes in flows due to unplanned events should be considered in unit processes, so that their impacts become distributed across downstream product systems depending on demand for the unit-process output. Purpose: Our aim in this study was to examine lettuce production in vertical farming or in conventional greenhouse production in Northern European conditions from the perspective of climate change impact and environmental sustainability. Further, the goal was to identify practices and choices that could mitigate adverse effects and increase resource-use efficiency, allowing the development of more sustainable production systems. Methods: This article provides new information of the environmental impacts of lettuce production in greenhouses and vertical farming in Finland, compared using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The impact categories used were climate change impact, cumulative energy demand, resource use of fossil energy sources, resource use of minerals and metals, land use, and water scarcity. The system boundaries covered the production chains from cradle to farmgate, including inputs in production, as well as direct emissions caused by fertiliser use and the onsite composting of organic waste. The environmental impacts of the two production systems with different energy scenarios were assessed: (1) a greenhouse either with average or renewable energy; and (2) vertical farming either with average or renewable energy and with or without waste heat recovery. The data for vertical farming were based on one Finnish production site and supplementary data for the construction materials. The greenhouse data were based on a previous LCA investigation of average Finnish lettuce production. Results: The climate change and all other impact categories were lowest for lettuce produced in vertical farming with renewable energy and waste heat recovery. The climate change impact was largest for lettuce produced in greenhouse with average energy use. For energy use and energy resource use, the impacts of vertical farming were lower than greenhouse production, but for mineral and metal use and water scarcity, the impact of vertical farming was higher for average energy use without heat recovery. Direct land and irrigation water use on the production sites in Finnish circumstances represented only a small share of total land-use and water-use impacts on both production methods. Conclusion: Paying attention to the energy source and heat recovery, the environmental sustainability can be advanced in both vertical and greenhouse production systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Laundry is a frequent household activity, performed either manually or by washing machine. This process consumes chemical products (such as laundry detergent and fabric softener), electricity, and water. It is therefore important to understand the environmental impacts and costs associated with laundry. The goal of this paper was to assess its eco-efficiency based on the NBR ISO 14045:2014 standard. Methods: Primary data were collected from laundry detergent and fabric softener producers in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. Secondary data were collected from patents, a chemical industry association, the government labeling program, and municipal water and electricity suppliers. The product system boundaries were cradle-to-consumer, and the impact categories were global warming, freshwater eutrophication, and land use. The product system value indicator was the washing costs from the consumer's perspective. The environmental and product system value indicators were related using the eco-efficiency formula which resulted in the process eco-efficiency profile. An uncertainty analysis was carried out to measure errors intrinsic to the data and the methods. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to identify the influence of choices made during the study and to propose viable technical improvements. Results: The results showed that the most impactful processes in the three categories were electricity, wastewater treatment, and the chemical products (laundry detergent and fabric softener). In terms of product system value, the costs of water and sewage treatment had the highest contribution to the overall costs. It was not possible to identify the laundry eco-efficiency profile degree and to calculate the X factor, due to the lack of studies in this area. Greater uncertainties were found in the global warming category, due to its global scope, while freshwater eutrophication category has country-specific characterization factors. A new scenario was proposed to identify possible economically and environmentally feasible changes. However, it did not generate significant changes that would improve the eco-efficiency profile of the evaluated process. Conclusions: This work highlights the eco-efficiency importance as an environmental management tool to support business decision-making and to identify the environmental impacts of domestic activities. By the results, washers and laundry products manufacturers know which areas they should invest in research and development to reduce their products' impacts. For future studies, it is recommended to evaluate the use of a detergent that does not require fabric softener, such as those sold by the brands Biozgreen, TerpenOil, and Yvy in the Brazilian market, and a high-efficiency washer. Purpose: Remanufacturing is a process in which used products are professionally repaired or upgraded to restore their performance to new products, but the uncertainties and complexities of the used products can greatly affect the remanufacturability. Blindly remanufacturing used products with uncertain remanufacturability can weaken the economic and environmental advantages. To improve remanufacturing efficiency, focusing on the three-dimensional sustainability of environment, economy, and society, this study presents a quantity remanufacturability assessment method for used products based on life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) theory, which we call Re-LCSA method. Methods: The remanufacturability assessment method assesses the environmental sustainability using life cycle assessment (LCA) techniques to compare the environmental benefits of product remanufacturing with new manufacturing. Economic sustainability is assessed by using life cycle costing (LCC) theory to compare the cost–benefit of product remanufacturing with new manufacturing. Social sustainability is assessed by using Dreyer's (Int J Life Cycle Assess 15:247–259, 2010a), (Int J Life Cycle Assess 15:385–402, 2010b) social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) methodology to analyze the factors of human rights, working conditions, and social economic related to product remanufacturing companies. The three dimensions of sustainability are respectively expressed by an indicator to assess the remanufacturability. Results and discussion: A used 5-year-old engine is used to illustrate the remanufacturability assessment process. The integrated environmental impact indicator of new manufacturing is more than five times that of remanufacturing, indicating that engine remanufacturing has great advantages over new manufacturing in reducing environmental pollution and energy consumption. The total remanufacturing cost accounts for approximately 50% of new manufacturing costs, with the greatest advantages found in the "raw material production" and "parts production" stages. The social analysis results show that engine remanufacturing performs well in terms of "human rights" and "social economy", but has lower scores in "working conditions." Conclusions: The Re-LCSA method provides an efficient means to identify the remanufacturing feasibility of used products and avoid unnecessary resource waste. It can also help in exploring ways to conserve resources, protect environment, and improve social conditions through remanufacturing. However, the assessment results depend largely on the underlying assumptions and investigation data; therefore, the accuracy of data and system boundaries must be ensured. In addition, the sustainability result is remarkably affected by weighting and value criteria, and it should be thoroughly investigated for rational decision making. Purpose: The international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 do not specify a single method for the performance of life cycle impact assessment (LCIA). As a result, many different LCIA methods have been developed and the choice between them is not always obvious. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to systematically compare the most commonly used multi-impact LCIA methods worldwide to support practitioners in confronting the question of how the choice of LCIA method affects the LCA results. Methods: Four LCIA methods: ReCiPe 2016, ILCD 2011, CML-IA baseline and IMPACT 2002+ at the midpoint level were applied to compare the environmental profiles of the electricity consumption mix in the EU-27, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, taking into account the electricity consumption mix in individual countries. The results of the impact categories were converted into common metrics using unit conversion factors to allow the comparison of the results in absolute values across LCIA methods. Results and discussion: In the LCA study, four common LCIA methods were compared across 12 defined midpoint areas of impacts. Results were consistent for climate change and ozone depletion, with the exception of the ReCiPe 2016 method, and acidification and eutrophication, with the exception of the IMPACT 2002+ method. Significant disparities were noted for ozone formation/respiratory organics, particulate matter/respiratory inorganics ecotoxicity and water consumption. The rankings of environmental profiles remained largely consistent across LCIA methods, with only a few exceptions concerning the following midpoint areas of impacts: ozone formation/respiratory organics, ecotoxicity and resource scarcity (minerals). Contribution analysis highlighted the crucial role of only a few key substances in each area. Conclusions: The methodological choices during LCIA have significant implications for the characterisation results in absolute values, but lead, in most cases, to comparable conclusions on the ranking of environmental profiles of the electricity consumption mix in the EU-27, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. This results from large methodological discrepancies between LCIA methods, concerning, among others, the geographical differentiation (either the European or global context), the scope of the impact categories grouped into the same midpoint area of impacts (for instance eutrophication) and the contribution of specific environmental flows to a given result of the impact category. Consequently, the findings of this research underpin the importance of careful selection of the LCIA method and impact categories, following the goal and scope definition and unique attributes of each method. Introduction: Health economic evaluation (HEE) provides guidance for decision-making in the face of scarcity but ignores ecological scarcities as long as they involve external costs only. Following the imperative to account for planetary health, this study explores how this blind spot can be addressed. Areas covered: The study is based on a critical review of relevant work, particularly in the fields of HEE and life cycle assessment (LCA). LCA can provide information on a technology's environmental impacts which can be accounted for on both the effect and cost sides of HEE. Cost–benefit analyses can incorporate environmental impacts in case vignettes used for eliciting consumers' willingness to pay. Existing LCA impact models can be used to estimate human health risks associated with environmental impacts and add them to the health benefits in cost-utility analyses. Many jurisdictions offer lists of shadow prices that can be used to incorporate environmental impacts on the cost side of HEE. Also, environmental impacts can be reported in a disaggregated manner. Expert opinion: Accounting for planetary boundaries is likely to become a key field of methodological innovation in HEE. Highlights To explore the potential application of plant fiber reinforced composites for automotive component applications, this study prepared bamboo fiber (BF)/nano‐talc/polypropylene (PP) composites based on the injection molding process, comprehensively evaluated the effect of reinforcement materials on the forming properties of composites, including thermal performance, mechanical properties, water absorption, etc. Furthermore, taking a certain automotive injection molded interior part as the object, a life‐cycle assessment from production to the gate was conducted based on the real energy and material consumption during the composite preparation process. The results indicate that adding BF and talc powder increased the thermal stability, density, hardness, viscosity, and crystallinity of the composites while reducing the water contact angle on the surface. Surface‐modified BF and PP showed good compatibility. Talc powder exhibited good dispersibility in PP, and the synergistic effect of BF and talc powder effectively enhanced the composite performance. The tensile, flexural, and impact strength of the composites were improved by 40.64%, 51.48%, and 66.51%, respectively, compared with pure PP. The modulus of the composite increased nearly 2 times compared with pure PP. Additionally, the composite demonstrated good friction and wear properties. The environmental impact of the BF composite manufacturing process was significantly higher than that of pure PP. The substantial consumption of electricity, chemicals, and water resources in the extraction and modification processes of BF were the main factors. The findings of this study contribute to achieving green, high‐performance BF composite manufacturing and the expansion of its applications. Composites have a higher environmental impact compared to PP. BF and talc can synergistically enhance the performance of composites. BF shows good compatibility with PP. Hydrogen locomotives offer a promising cleaner alternative to conventional diesel locomotives. However, hydrogen production methods and energy sources may introduce additional emissions. This paper evaluates the environmental and potential social impacts of hydrogen locomotives in Canada from a life cycle perspective, encompassing the locomotive's retrofitting components and the fuel life cycle. Results show varying emissions across different hydrogen production pathways and regions. Electrolysis has the highest emission reduction potential in provinces with cleaner electricity sources, such as Manitoba, Quebec and British Columbia, resulting in up to 47% reduction in life cycle emissions. Conversely, in Alberta and Saskatchewan, emissions are approximately three times higher than diesel due to reliance on fossil fuel-derived electricity. The social assessment underscores the imperative of considering emissions, costs, and technical implications to address potential social impacts. To reduce the impact of the agricultural sector on the environment, human health and resource depletion, several steps should be taken to develop innovative powertrain systems. The agricultural sector must be involved in this innovation, since diesel-powered tractors are an important source in terms of pollution. In this context, fuel-cell systems have gained importance, making them one of the possible substitutes due to their characteristics featuring almost zero local emissions, low refueling time and high efficiency. However, to effectively assess the sustainability of a fuel-cell tractor, a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment, comprising production, use phase and end of life, must be performed. This article presents a comparative analysis, according to different impact categories, of the life cycle impacts of a traditional diesel-powered tractor and a fuel-cell hybrid tractor, designed considering operative requirements and functional constraints. The study was conducted according to the LCA technique (defined by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards), combining secondary data, mainly derived from studies and reports available in the literature, with the use of the Ecoinvent 3.0 database. The results are presented according to ten different impact categories defined by ReCiPe 2016 v 1.03 at the midpoint level. The findings obtained showed that the fuel-cell tractor allows for a relevant reduction in all the considered categories. The highest-impact reduction, more than 92%, was obtained in the human toxicity non-carcinogenic category, while the lowest reduction, around 4.55%, was observed for the fossil fuel scarcity category, mainly due to the adoption of gray hydrogen which is produced from fossil fuels. As for the climate change category, the fuel-cell tractor showed a reduction of more than 34% in the life cycle impact. Finally, the authors also considered the case of green hydrogen produced using solar energy. In this case, further reductions in the impact on climate change and fossil fuel resource depletion were obtained. Proper management of wastewater treatment plant side streams in pulp and paper mills is a matter of great interest. This study evaluates the environmental impact of different strategies in the management of biosludge from pulp and paper mills in Finland through a Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The base industrial standard practice, biosludge incineration for energy recovery and ash landfill disposal (Scenario 1), was compared to the alternative process of hydrothermal carbonization. The hydrochar generated from hydrothermal carbonization was evaluated for energy recovery through incineration (Scenario 2), or for use in composting for nutrient recovery (Scenario 3). The results showed that the hydrothermal process improved the overall environmental performance of the sludge management, particularly in terms of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The use of hydrochar as a soil amendment in composting also resulted in a significant reduction on the environmental impact compared to the other two scenarios. 3D concrete printing (3DCP) has developed rapidly in recent years, with a relatively high amount of mortars emerging apt for 3D printing. Some of these mortars include fibers to improve their strength. Despite mechanical properties having been quite well studied, there still is missing information on cost, printability, and environmental impacts. The objective of this research is to select the best mortars with fibers considering four criteria: printability, mechanical strength, and economic and environmental impact applying a multi-criteria decision-making analysis (MCDMA). Seven types of fibers with different dosages were assessed in the reinforced mortars: zylon, aramid, carbon, glass, cellulose, textile, and polypropylene. AHP method and equal weights were used as ponderation techniques of the criteria while WASPAS and TOPSIS methods were used to calculate the rankings of the MCDMA. Printability was measured through rheological tests using a rotational rheometer, mechanical strength through flexural tests at 28 days based on EN 196–1, and cost just considering the materials and environmental impact through a life cycle assessment (LCA). The results showed that 13-mm-long glass fibers with a content of 0.1% were the best alternative, closely followed by the mortar with 6 mm cellulose fibers with a content of 0.05%. For the best option (G13;0.1), the increments in the printability index, flexural strength, cost, and LCA were − 14.37%, 16.70%, 5.88%, and 2.86%, respectively. It can also be concluded that high elastic modulus fibers (zylon and aramid), although able to increase significantly the flexural strength (up to 30% in the case of zylon), prevent them from being an optimal solution due to their high cost. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the carbon footprint, resilience levels, and optimal landscape area ratios of various parks. Additionally, it explores the relationships between landscape element proportions (LEP), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), resilience indicators (RI), and the carbon reduction benefits associated with carbon neutrality (CN). Six parks were assessed for resilience, NDVI, LEP, and CN values, with Pearson correlation analysis conducted. The results revealed that parks with or without waterbodies exhibited ideal LEP area ratios of 6.5:2:1.5 (Softscape:Waterbody:Hardscape) and 8.3:1.7 (Softscape:Hardscape), respectively. Enhanced Softscape and reduced Hardscape proportions in parks correlated with increased NDVI and CN. NDVI exhibited a positive correlation with Softscape percentage and a negative correlation with Hardscape percentage. Conversely, CN demonstrated a negative correlation with Hardscape percentage and a positive correlation with Softscape percentage. Suggesting Softscape should constitute over 65%, and Hardscape should be under 15% in parks with water bodies. Waterless parks are advised to maintain a Softscape ratio exceeding 83% and a Hardscape ratio below 17%. The interest in using essential oils for biotechnological and biomedical applications has been increasing because of their unique properties, such as their roles as preservatives, antioxidants, antimicrobial agents, and therapeutic agents, with oregano oil being a notable example. However, the bioactivity and stability of oregano oil can be compromised because of its volatile nature and external factors like exposure to light, heat, or oxygen. To protect oregano oil from these adverse effects and enhance its potential, microencapsulation has been employed. Nevertheless, studies evaluating the economic feasibility of this process are still limited. In this context, this study combines an environmental impact assessment by applying the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and an economic evaluation of three different scenarios (A, B, and C) for the production of oregano oil microparticles by a spray dryer. In Scenario A, only modified starch was used to prepare the emulsion; in Scenario B, the modified starch was replaced with gum arabic; and in Scenario C, the gum arabic, maltodextrin, and modified starch were combined. The results indicated that Scenario B presents the best environmental performance for all impact categories analyzed (global warming, fossil resource scarcity, mineral resource scarcity, terrestrial acidification, freshwater eutrophication, and marine eutrophication). However, the composting of bio-waste end-of-life presents better environmental performance for the other scenarios (A and C). A small-scale organic crop producing the protected geographical indication (PGI) cultivar "Faba Asturiana", located in northern Spain, was considered to be a case study for analyzing the environmental impacts associated with the production of this legume (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was employed for the analysis with a "cradle-to-gate" perspective, with 1 kg of dry beans as the functional unit. The results demonstrated that the main contributor to the environmental impacts was electricity consumption (with percentages above 75% for ionizing radiation, freshwater eutrophication, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and non-carcinogenic toxicity). A carbon footprint (CF) of 1.20 kg CO2eq per kg of dry beans was obtained (around 1000 kg CO2/ha·y). Electricity consumption was the major contributor to the CF, followed by atmospheric emissions from waste incineration and diesel use. Furthermore, some environmental improvements were suggested, and three alternative scenarios were investigated. In conclusion, it can be established that the CF of the studied PGI bean is within the range reported by other researchers for leguminous crops. The easiest way to reduce the CF for this particular crop would be to compost the organic waste instead of burning it. Additionally, the most effective strategy would be to reduce energy consumption or use renewable energy sources. As China's economy and society continue to advance, there has been a notable enhancement in the quality of life for its people. However, the escalating energy consumption in buildings, particularly for heating and cooling purposes, has emerged as a pressing concern, accounting for nearly 60% of the overall energy consumption. In response to this challenge, heat pumps have emerged as a promising solution by efficiently meeting the demand for heating and cooling. Among these options, wastewater-source heat pumps (WWSHP) have garnered attention as an innovative choice, harnessing the waste heat in available wastewater resources in China to provide efficient heating and cooling services. The objective of this study was to comprehensively investigate the decarbonisation potential associated with sewage source heat pumps in China. By employing both techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment methods, we conducted a thorough comparison between conventional heating and cooling systems and various heat pump systems. The results of our analysis demonstrate that WWSHPs not only exhibit the lowest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but also yield the lowest production costs. Our findings reveal that the potential capacity of WWSHPs amounted to a total of 2.4 EJ in 2020, with the capability to mitigate 99 Mt CO2-eq emissions and achieve cost savings of 24 billion RMB. Importantly, WWSHPs' maximum potential cannot be fully realised by replacing heating alone. This study investigates the use of electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, as a substitute for conventional filler, such as calcium carbonate, in nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) composites in different volume fraction. The results demonstrate that slag exhibits morphological traits comparable to calcium carbonate when used as a filler, moreover their processability and mechanical properties are similar. Specifically, at 20% v/v, slag-flled NBR exhibits slightly longer scorch times but unchanged vulcanization times. Both fillers at 20% v/v show comparable hardness, compression strength, and elastic modulus. Tensile properties are also comparable, except for the strain at break, where slag-filled NBR shows a 40% higher tensile strain at break. The environmental impact of this innovative slag application has been evaluated through a comparative life cycle assessment. All assessed impact categories demonstrate a reduction of at least 89%. Geopolymer concrete is a sustainable construction material developed with industrial by-products to eliminate the use of cement in concrete production. However, a cradle-to-cradle life cycle assessment (LCA) that accounts for the impact of service life is essential to comprehensively assess the environmental advantages of GPC. In this study, a comparative cradle-to-cradle LCA was performed for circular geopolymer concrete (CGPC), geopolymer concrete (GPC), and circular ordinary concrete (COC), as alternatives to Portland cement concrete (PCC). Also, the biases of common LCA resulted from ignoring service life and end-of-life scenarios were identified. Finally, the sustainability potentials of the alternative scenarios were evaluated. According to the cradle-to-cradle LCA using the adopted functional unit, GPC and CGPC significantly alleviated the environmental impact of cement production, such as global warming potential by about 53%. Ignoring the service life and end-of-life scenarios considerably changed the critical midpoint (ionizing radiation for CGPC and GPC) and endpoint indicators (resources for CGPC and GPC) and priority of alternative concretes. The increase in the negative effects of global change promotes the search for alternatives to supply the demand for food worldwide aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure food security. Animal protein, which is a main source of nutrients in the diet of today's society, especially beef, which is one of the most demanded products nowadays, has been criticized not only for its high water consumption and land occupation for production but also for the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) from enteric methane generated in the fermentation process within the bovine rumen and deforestation for the adaptation of pastures. This study is mainly motivated by the lack of quantifiable scientific information in Colombia on the environmental impacts of beef production. Therefore, it is intended to estimate some of the impacts of beef production in extensive systems using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method under a particular scenario considering all the production phases (from raw material to fattening, where the cattle are ready to be slaughtered). The study was conducted with data supplied by a farm in Antioquia, Colombia, and the functional unit (FU) was defined as 1 kg of live weight (LW). The scope of this study was gate-to-gate. "The 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories" (IPCC 2006; IPCC 2019) was used to calculate methane and nitrous oxide emissions. LCA modeling was developed with Ecoinvent database v3.8 and the Umberto LCA + software. It was found that the most affected category of damage was ecosystem quality, which represents 77% of the total, followed by human health at 17% and resources at 6%. The category impact of agricultural land occupation is the one that represents the most significant contribution to the ecosystem quality endpoint, with a percentage of 87%, due to the soil's compaction and the loss of the soil's properties. AbstractThis research advances the development of eco-friendly high-performance concrete (HPC) by integrating tire rubber powder and waste wire, focusing on both enhanced mechanical properties and reduced environmental impact. Substituting up to 40% of silica sand with rubber powder helps maintain the compressive strength necessary for high-strength concrete applications. The addition of waste wire is designed to improve ductility. A comprehensive evaluation includes mechanical and microstructural analyses, such as compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength assessments, in addition to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). Environmental implications are assessed by measuring the embodied carbon footprint. Findings indicate that the absence of rubber powder allows for a compressive strength peak of 95 MPa, while 50% rubber content leads to a decrease to 25 MPa, establishing a 40% rubber threshold for optimal strength. Conversely, 3% waste wire reinforcement enhances the strength to 106 MPa. Microstructural investigations reveal that increased rubber content adversely affects compressive strength by weakening the cement matrix, and reducing calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) formation. Significantly, the study reveals that replacing silica sand with rubber powder, along with waste wire reinforcement, substantially reduces the carbon footprint of the material, contributing to more sustainable construction methodologies. The carbon footprint of a product represents the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released during its production, transportation, and consumption and is calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq). It should be integrated into different existing and future seafood awareness campaigns to create more holistic yardsticks by which consumers, retail businesses, and producers can assess the environmental impacts of seafood. This study used the life cycle assessment (LCA) method for the first time to quantify the carbon footprint of salmon fillet products processed in Vietnam for export. The carbon footprint of 1-kg salmon fillet at the factory gate ranges between 7.20 and 15.05 kg CO2-eq, depending on transportation modes of head-on-gutted (HOG) salmon from Norway to Vietnam. Transportatiton by airfreight doubled carbon footprint of salmon fillet products processed in Vietnam compared to sea freight. Feed and electricity were identified as the two most respective contributing factors during the stage of cultivation, processing fresh salmon in Norway, and the stage of salmon fillet processing in Vietnam. They accounted for about 95% and 50% of the total carbon footprint in these stages of the production chain, respectively. To reduce the carbon footprint of the salmon fillet products processed in Vietnam, the company should (i) make a careful production plan to use sea freight transportation instead of airfreight and (ii) use more electricity from renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the carbon footprint of these products can be reduced by improving the cultivation process via changing feed ingredients and enhancing the feed conversion ratio (FCR). Translation abstract Life cycle assessment of concrete made of 100 % recycled aggregate compared to normal concreteThe construction sector accounts for a significant proportion of the consumption of natural resources and is also the source of the largest waste streams. The aim must therefore be to improve the circular economy in the construction sector. In this context, the Institute for Materials and Building Research (IMB) at Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) has investigated the use of recycled aggregates beyond the technical building regulations up to 100 % including recycled sand for the production of structural concrete. The first applications of concrete with 100 % recycled aggregate (100 % RC concrete) have already been completed and are presented in this issue. Based on the findings from the research and construction projects, life cycle assessments were performed in which 100 % RC concrete (circular system) was compared with normal concrete (linear system) for the application case C30/37 XC4/XF3 (CEM II/C‐M (S‐LL)). The life cycle assessments of the two product systems were prepared in the form of nomograms so that input parameters such as transport services can be adjusted and a graphical evaluation of GWP can be carried out. This makes it easy to elaborate recommendations for the use of 100 % RC concrete with regard to reducing the environmental impact (GWP) in specific applications based on the life cycle assessments carried out. Other cements can also be taken into account after a simple conversion. The analyses show that the circular system has a slightly lower GWP when assuming the same transport distances and the same cement content but a slightly higher superplasticizer content. Translation abstract Life cycle assessment of repair variants according to TR‐IH depending on the degree of damageThe aim of this publication is the life cycle assessment of repair measures acc. to TR‐IH (Technical guideline Maintenance of concrete structures) on the basis of a case study. Here, a fictitious two‐storey underground car park is considered, the floor slab of which is uncoated and whose false ceiling has numerous separation cracks. On the basis of common chloride diffusion models, the temporal chloride penetration into the floor slab and thus the temporal development of the degree of damage can be estimated. Depending on the degree of damage, permissible repair methods are selected acc. to TR‐IH and their necessary individual measures are defined, which in turn are linked to Global Warming Potential (GWP). Thus, depending on the age of the component at the time of repair, the GWP for various repair procedures can be determined. In a further step, practical assumptions for operation and maintenance are made so that the GWP of the repair procedures can be determined over the remaining service life depending on the time of repair. The calculation results show that early repairs lead to a low GWP. In addition, careful repair procedures without major interventions in the structure (methods 7.7, 7.8 or 8.3) lead particularly to low GWP. If one compares Cathodic Protection (CP) with method 7.2, CP is linked to a significantly lower GWP for crack repair, or if electricity from renewable energies is used during service life. Blue hydrogen (H 2) serves as a pivotal initial step towards emissions reduction and a seamless transition to green hydrogen by providing a cleaner alternative to grey hydrogen. Blue H 2 can be obtained through diverse pathways (i.e. , distinct processes and stages) within the hydrogen supply network (HSN), resulting in varying greenhouse gas emission levels. This paper uses the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to compare 18 different blue HSN pathways. Blue hydrogen is produced from three different processes (i.e. , Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), Partial Oxidation of Methane (POM), and Auto-Thermal Reforming (ATR)) that are coupled with carbon capture unit (CCU). Moreover, it can be conditioned to different states or carriers (i.e. , liquefied H 2 , compressed H 2 , ammonia, and methanol), stored using various methods, transported by different means according to its state, and reconditioned to its original state at end-users. The LCA results indicate that the NH 3 pathway has the least environmental impact measuring just 2.12 kgCO 2equ / kgH 2 compared to the other 18 blue HSN pathways. This pathway involves producing hydrogen from ATR process coupled with CCS, and eventually delivering as ammonia to consumers. Additionally, the blue H 2 results of this paper are compared to the green H 2 results discussed in the previous paper. The comparison highlights that integrating renewable energy in the form concentrated photovoltaic collectors produces the lowest emissions compared to all pathways. Given the increasing interest in offsite construction and the prefabricated components it produces, this paper aims to establish a common matrix, the PreDI, for the offsite construction industry. The effort is to enhance the comparability of research and practices in offsite construction, making it more universally understood. Offsite construction involves manufacturing components in a factory and then assembling them on-site. It is considered a more sustainable approach due to less material usage, energy consumption, and waste generation during component fabrication. However, the lack of common terminology for offsite construction poses many challenges in the industry and its research, hindering communication and research. The Prefabricated Dimensions and Integrations (PreDI) matrix, developed in the study, provides a solution for industry and research use. Thus, industry and academia can utilize the PreDI widely, accurately, and precisely in communication. This paper demonstrates the PreDI matrix's application in life cycle assessment research on offsite construction, showcasing its utility and setting the stage for more robust research analyses in the future. Using the PreDI matrix in 24 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon houses further highlights its potential in the industry. The real implementation of biogas reforming at an industrial scale to obtain interesting products (like hydrogen or syngas) is a developing research field where multidisciplinary teams are continuously adding improvements and innovative technologies. These works can contribute to the proliferation of green technologies where the circular economy and sustainability are key points. To assess the sustainability of these processes, there are different tools like life cycle assessment (LCA), which involves a complete procedure where even small details count to consider a certain technology sustainable or not. The aim of this work was to review works where LCA is applied to different aspects of biogas reforming, focusing on the role of catalysts, which are essential to improve the efficiency of a certain process but can also contribute to its environmental impact. In conclusion, catalysts have an influence on LCA through the improvement of catalytic performance and the impact of their production, whereas other aspects related to biogas or methane reforming could equally affect their catalytic durability or reusability, with a subsequent effect on LCA. A Carbon Footprint (CF) is defined as the total emissions of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, and is a specific type of Environmental Footprint that measures human impact on the environment. Carbon dioxide emissions are a major contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gases driving climate change. Wood, as a renewable and ecological material, has relatively low carbon emissions. The study aimed to review and analyze the criteria influencing the feasibility of constructing modern zero-carbon wooden buildings. The review was conducted in two phases: (i) a literature review and (ii) an assessment of existing buildings. The preliminary research led to (i) narrowing the focus to the years 2020–2024 and (ii) identifying key criteria for analysis: sustainable material sourcing, carbon sequestration, energy efficiency, life cycle assessment (LCA), and innovative construction practices. The study's findings indicate that all these criteria play a vital role in the design and construction of new zero-carbon wooden buildings. They highlight the significant potential of wood as a renewable material in achieving zero-carbon buildings (ZCBs), positioning it as a compelling alternative to traditional construction materials. However, the research also underscores that despite wood's numerous potential benefits, its implementation in ZCBs faces several challenges, including social, regulatory, and financial barriers. Sustainable waste management strategies are urgently needed due to an increasing global population and increased waste production. In this context, biorefineries have recently emerged as a promising approach to valorize waste streams and supply a broad range of products. This study presents the process model and life cycle assessment (LCA) of a biorefinery concept using a novel biochemical method, a so-called "dark photosynthesis" conversion. This process is coupled to a photo-fermentation using microalgae. Overall, the biorefinery concept can produce hydrogen, lutein, β-carotene, and proteins for animal feed. Apple pomace from apple juice production is used as feedstock for the primary conversion step. A process model was created with the process simulation software Aspen Plus® using experimental and literature data. Results from this model were then used in an LCA. The environmental impacts of the proposed biorefinery concept are relatively high, showing the need for process optimization in several areas. Energy system integration, stream recycling, and higher hydrogen yields are recognized as especially important for improving the environmental performance of this concept. Despite these findings, the model shows the feasibility of implementing the biochemical conversion technologies in a biorefinery concept for effectively utilizing residue streams. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have demonstrated a promising material efficiency potential in comparison to traditional material removal processes. A new directed energy deposition (DED) category AM process called wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is evolving due to its benefits which include faster build rates, capacity to build large volumes, and inexpensive feedstock materials and machine tools compared to more technologically mature powder-based AM technologies. However, WAAM products present challenges like poor surface finish and lower dimensional accuracy compared to powder-based processes or machined parts, prevalence of thermal distortions, residual stresses, and defects like porosity, cracks, and humping, often requiring post-processing operations like finish machining and heat treatment. These post-processing operations add to the production cost and environmental footprint of WAAM-built parts. Therefore, considering the opportunities and challenges presented by WAAM, this paper analyses the environmental impact, production costs, and mechanical properties of WAAM parts and compares them with those achieved by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and traditional computer numerical control (CNC) milling. A high-strength low-alloy steel (ER70S) mechanical part with medium complexity was fabricated using WAAM. Based on the data collected during this experiment, environmental impact and cost models were built using life cycle assessment and life cycle costing methodologies. WAAM was observed to be the most environmentally friendly option due to its superior material efficacy than CNC milling and has a better energy efficiency than LPBF. Also, WAAM was the most cost-friendly option when adopted in batch production for batch sizes above 3. The environmental and cost potential of WAAM is amplified when used for manufacturing large products, resulting in significant material, emission, and cost savings. The fabricated WAAM part demonstrated good mechanical properties comparable to that of cast/forged material. The methodology and experimental data presented in this study can be used to calculate environmental impacts and costs for other products and can be helpful to manufacturers in selecting the most ecofriendly and cost-efficient manufacturing process. The carbon footprint of methanol from cradle‐to‐grave is evaluated using three process concepts to capture CO2, i.e., one using CO2 from direct air capture (DAC) and the other two utilizing CO2 from a steel mill's blast furnace gas (BFG). Hydrogen is supplied by onsite electrolysis, or from a German offshore wind park, or an Australian solar park with ammonia as hydrogen carrier. The study is of interest to life cycle assessment (LCA) practitioners, policymakers, and industries' management who are involved in regulating, planning, implementing, and operating projects which aim to produce fuels using hydrogen from electrolysis (so‐called 'e‐fuels'). The influence of assumptions in the RED‐II delegated act regarding recycled carbon fuels and renewable liquid and gaseous fuels of non‐biological origin on the carbon footprint results is examined. The RED‐II assumption regarding the credits for captured CO2 after 2041 indicate that DAC‐based concepts are advantageous with respect to BFG, although the LCA results indicate the opposite. Harnessing basic oxygen furnace gas (BOFG) from steel mills as an alternative carbon source is a promising option to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study explores two process concepts to purify CO from BOFG for subsequent phosgene synthesis: (i) vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) yielding pure CO, and (ii) CO2 separation via monoethanolamine (MEA) absorption producing CO‐enriched gas. By combining process optimization with life cycle assessment (LCA), process parameters are identified that minimize GHG emissions. The MEA concept can reduce emissions by up to 60 %, whereas the VPSA concept achieves a reduction of 47 %. Utilizing renewable energy enables further reductions, indicating additional environmental benefits in the future. This study investigated the integrated valorization of defatted rice bran (DRB) by converting it into lactic acid (LA) and subsequently utilizing the residues from LA production for biomethane generation through anaerobic digestion (AD). Processing 480 kg of DRB resulted in the production of 70 L of pure LA and generated significant waste streams, primarily consisting of 572 kg of decanted hydrolysate pellet (Pellet DEC) and 220 kg of microfiltration retentate (Retentate MF). Exceptionally high methane yields of 374-434 LN kgVS -1 were observed for residues from LA fermentation in biochemical methane potential tests, indicating their high potential for biogas production. During long-term semi-continuous AD, varying organic loading rates (OLRs) from 0.5-2.5 kgVS m-3 d-1 demonstrated feedstock- and OLR-dependent methane production. Reactor failure at higher OLRs was attributed to the accumulation of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN). The co-digestion of Pellet DEC and Retentate MF proved to be more resilient, with OLRs up to 2 kgVS m-3 d-1, mitigating TAN inhibition. Methane yields, ranging from 265-334 LN kgVS-1 before reaching inhibitory OLR levels, were higher than those found in the literature. Process integration has emerged as a promising approach because the biogas generated from residues could effectively offset the energy demands of LA production. Supported by life cycle assessment, the integrated processes showed a 67% lower environmental impact at the midpoint and a 71% lower environmental impact at the endpoint, along with an 80% reduction in energy costs compared to the standalone LA production. This research addresses a critical gap in understanding the environmental impact of natural rock aggregate production in Sri Lanka. The study employs life cycle assessment (LCA) and SimaPro Software to simulate natural coarse aggregates' extraction and manufacture process. Key findings reveal significant environmental impacts, with human carcinogenic toxicity (2.45938 × 10−6 Pt), eutrophication of freshwater (1.59326 × 10−6 Pt), and fossil resource scarcity (1.4823 × 10−6 Pt) being significant concerns. The crushing process in particular shows the highest levels, contributing 2.21 × 106 to human carcinogenic toxicity and 8.92 × 107 to freshwater eutrophication. High electricity consumption, particularly from hard coal in electricity generation, is identified as a primary contributor. Although the sole source of coarse aggregate production in Sri Lanka is natural rock crushing, there is a lack of country-specific environmental impact assessment data for this process. This study provides a valuable dataset for the Sri Lankan construction industry, covering various environmental impact categories and encompassing the sub-processes inherent to natural rock aggregate production. The research highlights the necessity of implementing sustainable practices in quarry operations, proposing a transition towards more environmentally friendly energy sources. By quantifying environmental effects, this study provides valuable insights for stakeholders in the construction sector, enabling informed decision-making and targeted interventions to enhance overall sustainability while offering aggregate manufacturers opportunities to adopt more sustainable practices. It is well understood that the dominant approach in the seismic design of structures is to reduce the initial cost while meeting the required safety level, as dictated by compliance codes. Nevertheless, this approach often overlooks the long-term costs that are incurred over the lifetime of the structures. A comprehensive approach is thus required for a design based on life cycle cost (LCC), where both initial and long-term costs are considered. While LCC-based design has been employed on regular structures, irregular structures have not received adequate attention. This research aims to highlight the impact of irregularity on the LCC optimization of tall structures. To do this, a bi-objective heuristic optimization framework is developed to balance the initial and long-term costs. The framework is used to analyze six steel regular and setback irregular structures with 7, 10, and 13 stories. The structures are all designed to meet the life safety performance level. The findings show that the irregular structures reveal a higher sensitivity to variations in initial costs compared to regular structures, which are mainly buildings above 13 stories. We also show that reducing the LCCs of irregular structures requires a higher increase in the initial cost compared to regular structures; for example, in the regular and irregular 13-story structures, a 17% increase in the initial cost resulted in approximately 48% and 40% reductions in the LCCs, respectively. Overall, our results confirm that the long-term costs of irregular structures are more than those of regular ones; this is an important finding that should be considered for the seismic design of tall irregular structures. Repurposing saffron (Crocus sativus) waste presents a sustainable strategy for generating high-value products within the bioeconomy framework. Typically, flower components are discarded after stigma harvest, resulting in significant waste—350 kg of tepals per kilogram of stigmas. This research employed a comprehensive approach, integrating bioactivity studies (in vitro and in silico) with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluations, to extract and assess bioactive compounds from C. sativus tepals sourced in Tuscany, Italy. Phytochemical characterization using UPLC-MS/MS revealed a high abundance and variety of flavonoids in the hydro-ethanolic extract (CST). The antioxidant capacity was validated through various assays, and the ability to mitigate H2O2-induced oxidative stress and enhance fermentation was demonstrated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This study reports that C. sativus tepals extract reduces oxidative stress and boosts ethanol fermentation in yeast, paving the way for applications in the food and biofuels sectors. Further validation in RAW 264.7 macrophages confirmed CST's significant anti-inflammatory effects, indicating its potential for pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, and nutraceutical applications. In silico studies identified potential targets involved in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory processes, shedding light on possible interaction mechanisms with Kaempferol 3-O-sophoroside (KOS-3), the predominant compound in the extract. The integration of LCA studies highlighted the environmental benefits of this approach. Overall, this research underscores the value of using waste-derived extracts through "green" methodologies, offering a model that may provide significant advantages for further evaluations compared to traditional methodologies and supporting the circular bioeconomy. There are environmental concerns (especially regarding climate change) associated with the negative effects of some pruning waste management practices. Converting urban tree waste into valuable products can help mitigate climate change, but it is important to quantify the repercussions of tree waste scenarios in an urban context. The objective of this study was to quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for six scenarios of urban pruning waste in urban areas. To this end, the life cycle assessment methodology was applied to real data obtained from five municipalities of the Paraíba state in 2012–2021 (northeast Brazil). The six scenarios were: sanitary landfill (current practice), sanitary landfill with methane capture, municipal incineration, reuse of wood, heat generation and electricity generation. Considering the 10-year period, the sanitary landfill emitted 1048 kt CO2e, and when methane was captured at the landfill, emissions decreased to 1033 kt CO2e. The lowest emissions were associated with electricity generation, with 854 kt CO2e. The municipality of João Pessoa presented the highest emissions, followed by Cabedelo, Santa Rita, Bayeux, and Conde. Transportation was responsible for the highest share of GHG emissions. Disposal of urban pruning waste at the sanitary landfill presented the highest emissions, and it has been demonstrated herein that pruning waste can be used for the production of bioenergy, with significant potential to mitigate GHG emissions at local levels. Methanol production through carbon capture and utilization technologies offers promising alternatives to traditional natural-gas-based methods, potentially mitigating climate change impacts and improving resource efficiency. This study evaluates four methanol production pathways: CO2 hydrogenation, tri-reforming of methane, electrochemical CO2 reduction, and co-electrolysis of CO2 and water. The analysis covers 19 scenarios, combining three electricity mixes (100% Thai grid mix, 50% Thai grid mix and 50% renewable energy, and 100% renewable energy) with two hydrogen production technologies (alkaline water electrolysis and grey hydrogen). Environmental life cycle assessment results showed that most pathways perform well when using the 100% renewable energy with co-electrolysis (CE-100%) showing the most substantial reductions across all impact categories as compared conventional methanol production. Electrochemical reduction demonstrated the poorest environmental performance for all scenarios. In Thailand, implementing the CE-100% pathway could potentially yield 12.4 million tonnes of methanol annually from the cement industry's CO2 emissions, with an estimated value of approximately USD 5.4 billion, while reducing emissions from the industrial processes and product use (IPPU) sector by 75%. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers, supporting Thailand's transition towards sustainable methanol production and broader climate goals. Even though carbon fibres (CFs) have been increasingly used, their end-of-life (EOL) handling presents a challenge. To address this issue, we evaluated the use of recycled CFs (rCFs), produced through pyrolysis, as rovings to be used in textile reinforced concrete structures. Mechanical processing (hammer mill) with varying machine settings was then used to assess EOL handling, considering the separation potential of rCFs and the length of separated rCFs. The results showed that rCF rovings can be separated from concrete with an average of 87 wt.-%, whereas the highest rCF length and separation yield were observed in different machine settings. In addition, a techno-environmental assessment on the mechanical process was performed to compare different machine settings. The machine settings with the highest yield of rCF rovings also had the highest fine fraction that cannot be further separated. Furthermore, life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted covering three life cycles of CFs and an additional LCA for comparing rCF with virgin CF. LCA results revealed that CF reinforced plastic and concrete productions are the two main contributors to environmental impacts. The comparative LCA between virgin CF and rCF also showed that using rCF is environmentally advantageous, as virgin CF production causes 230% more global warming potential compared to rCF.
